A little drabble for Night for @ultimategirldad ! It's another little experiment with style, kind of addressing Milgram as a whole rather than a single prisoner moment.

Milgram prison contains no windows and no doors. There are no vents, either, and the walls are too thick to hear anything from the outside. Hours, days, and seasons all look alike. Its occupants found that the best way to distinguish the time of day is to listen.

During its first trial, the prison was rowdy with chatter all day, only to settle into peaceful silence each night. During its second trial, things have reversed. The days are full of hushed voices and silent, suspicious glares. And at night, the panopticon comes alive with noise.

There is the underlying chaos from cell 009, as furniture goes flying and muffled screams vibrate through the walls.

A sudden cry may come from cell 003 or 006, as injuries are agitated in sleep.

From any of the cells, one may hear gentle sniffling for hours on end, whispering about could have been’s and days long gone. 

From even the most unexpected rooms, there have been bouts of unrestrained sobs before quickly falling silent once more.

Any of the cells could burst with the gasping shock of awakening from a nightmare, though some are better hidden than others. 

It may not sound through the room itself, but there was another noise that haunted the panopticon. Hundreds of voices, constantly speaking over one another, drive the prisoners to near madness all night long.

Not all noises are so bad, though.

Sentimental calls are exchanged between cell 001 and 004. Even when they receive a scolding from in between, it's always half-hearted.

Particularly dull days could end with games shouted through the room, or music harmonized among the cells.

The darkness made it easier to bear oneself to others, and secrets are often passed through the bars with newfound trust.

When cell 003 or 007 erupted with snoring, it could cause ripples of giggling to the neighboring area. 002 had the highest record of uncontrollable laughter late into the night.

And on some rare occasions, when the outward and inward voices calmed, and the whole place was nearly silent, the prisoners can strain their ears to just make out what was coming from the guard’s chambers at the end of the hall: the melody of strange songs that leave them with nameless emotions for the rest of the night.

there are doctors there are hospitals there are specialists there is medicine there are systems in place so people do not have to suffer and be tortured under their own chronic pain daily and yet. they're all fucking inaccessible to the people who need it most!!! to what I would argue is most disabled people!! I'm so fucking done with the medical system.

i think people's takes on jev being this like thousand year old creatura are fascinating and fit even my interpretation of his character and place in the story (as like. a representation of the setting at large. an archaic force being shoved into a simulation/loop/machine. cosmis horror kinda shit) but i also think it's 1. funnier 2. scarier 3. more emotionally scarring to imagine him as like. a 30, 40, 50 year old man. just a quirky little guy. he had a childhood, maybe he got picked up by seam as an urchin and they were a travelling magic act and clownery and judy n punch duo and they stole apples from the market and he climbed trees w his little paws before someone made him wear shoes. he was a brash teenager and he played the accordion and kept all of his trinkets in a little chest he used to sleep in. seam made his suits, from his own crayon drawings. he was a middle aged man disenchanted with his work and he sought shelter from the boredom in bothering others. and he ran away so many times and he slept outside and he helped seam make their own beer and mead and they still played the accordion and the hurdy-gurdy together. isn't it scarier to make him a normal man? who turns into what we see? doesn't that hurt more doesn't that make his character even deeper. he was just like you and this means That can happen to you too, grounding stuff like that is like one of the basic rules of horror. and then he just goes to jail they straight up lock a mentally ill guy with all those horrors in the basement - not an old-as-time-itself demon, not a savage beast, but. a man. jevil russian sleep experiment au.

So to be clear tumblr is the only social media i actually bother to use with any regularly, but sometimes you crave variety. For example sometimes going on reddit is a nice distraction, and my feed is all really interesting silly low-investment type posts that i can scroll thru and be entertained by without feeling like i have to engage. and other times it feels exactly like facebook. just suggested post after suggested post that makes me say "god you people are so fucking unbelievably stupid." posts seemingly hand picked to make me so enraged, the exact kind of shit I go online to AVOID.

currently it's recommending me a bunch of posts about "why does America have so much looting?" That have a bunch of responses like, "Because of the crime wave, no one prosecutes shoplifters, people have just noticed its so easy to get a group together on whatsapp, etc" and WHY? It thinks I would want or need these posts? Idfk??? I hang out in r/antiwork and like 3 other main subs about being homeless and random entertainment topics. I don't use reddit for politics or world events. I do NOT get my news from there.

Anyway there was also one recommended thread about "why do rural folk feel looked down upon by city folks?" And all the responses were, "yeah! It's them who are rude to the city people!" And when someone mentioned the lack of resources in rural areas, another person chimed in to say "well I lived in Detroit and now I live in a rural area and we have WAY more food and resources than Detroit does!" But the second anyone brings up, you know, the socioeconomic factors that influence that shit, everyone's like whining and crying bc their little brains can't handle ""bringing race into it."" someone had a different life experience than you?! Pft, sure, and then all the bystanders clapped! 🙄

idk it's like. the more time goes on, the wider economic gaps become, the more obvious it is how effectively people are brainwashed. It's not like the answers to these questions are hidden esoteric mysteries. It's not like people having different, individual experiences in life is new.
