Lucifer who had been waiting for him by the door: Charlie has activities usually, and is more then willing to talk to residents about their feelings and how they ended up in hell so that’s like therapy. I’m surprised you know about that, has heaven finally implemented it?
Adam, grumbling: No Heaven doesn’t fucking have therapy, but for the last ten years the newer winners have been asking why and the older angels had to find out what the fuck it is
Lucifer, humming: I do have to wonder how all the therapists up there don’t fall from utter frustration
Charlie, watching them come down the stairs excitedly: Hi Dad! Hi Adam! I’m so excited you came down. How are you feeling today, do you think you might be up for an activity? Or ooh, I never got to show you around the whole hotel just to your room. Whatever you feel like! Adam, stepping back: I knew she was excited during the meeting but Is she always this fucking cheery? It’s like Emily has a long lost twin from Hell
Angel Dust, from the bar: It’s the new resident joy, you’ll get used to it lambchop!

Vaggie, vaguely remembering the angel: Do you mean….the Mike who was your bosses boss, the one who came around and inspected the exterminator’s once every ten years. That Mike?

Lucifer, laughing: Nothing can
Charlie, smacking her head: Awful uncle Mike! Dad told me about him, don’t worry Adam Alastor is nothing like him. The smile is just….a tool for him? It’s harmless
Adam, rolling his eyes: The bartender just looked at you like you lied to gods face and then fucking spat on it, but whatever. I’ll do the activities and shit, later, but only ones you’re in charge of- why does your face look like that?
Charlie singing to Vaggie, after grabbing a confused Adam’s elbow and happily dragging him on the tour: He trusts meeeee!
Adam, flushing: ONLY MORE THEN THAT FUCKING DEER!

Angel, laughing at Alastor when he walked in ten minutes later: Hey Alastor, guess what sheep boy trusts the devil and the devil’s daughter more then you. How’s that make you feel?

"Satoru", you began with a shaky voice.
Your husband Satoru Gojo had all your attention the moment you said his name.
You had called up Satoru to the Tokyo estate, your marital home, for 'an important emergency talk'. These words were enough for Gojo to run from his busy packed schedules to run home to check up on you.
"Hmm?", Satoru hummed indicating you he's all ears. Both seated opposite to each other in the kitchen.
"Satoru, i-", you hesitated but continued, " Satoru, i want divorce...."
At first, he was unresponsive, still processing whether the words he heard were real or some weak residual cursed technique from cursed spirits left on him considering he came right after finishing a mission.
"Divorce?" Satoru came to his senses, "is this... some sort of.. joke my love MRS y/n? Cus' I'm really not liking it!", he tried to laugh it off.
But this wasn't a joke.
Not for you.
You're done.
Done giving him all of everything you have and receiving none.
You had your head slightly bowed down, unable to summon the energy, the strength to look right into his eyes. "This is not a joke, Satoru Gojo.", "i cannot live like this anymore".
Satoru knew it was indeed serious by the tone of it so he's demeanor changed as well.
"Why is it so y/n?", he mumbled in his soft husky voice while extending his hand towards yours to hold. "Is it something i did? You know you can tell me. I told you beforehand marrying me wasn't going to be easy, you remember?"
Yes he is right. He did told you a bazillion times when you nagged him for marriage anytime and everytime you saw him breathing around you. He had told you enough times that being his wife and also in a conservative society isn't going to be a cakewalk. 'Once married, there is no way out of the marital bond since its a holy bond, blessed by the heavens themselves' or as they said, but you didn't care, at that time.
"Reasons don't matter.", you flinched your hands away from his approach and passed the envelope with the papers and got up. "You'll find my signatures in there. Please be civil. Don't want any drama."
Satoru didn't knew what to say since he didn't even expected such a devastating and mind boggling news either. He had just finished his mission overseas and had taken only an hour of rest before being assigned another 'clean up' duty (messed/botched mission by another sorcerer) and in the middle of it he gets your call for an emergency meet up at the house.
He has been working all around the clock and came home to see you, hoping to receive kisses or you expecting souvenirs, which he had plenty just for you. But instead he got this ..... a farewell?
Gojo stayed seated there, watching you leave the kitchen to the room. He stayed seated there for a moment wondering what did he do, where did he go wrong, did he go wrong? Are you alright? Is this a cry for help? Is everything okay with you?
He wanted to check up on you so he got up to head towards the bedroom where you were but stopped dead in his tracks when it hit him, the reason....
"Y/n", you heard the door slide open and Gojo calling your name.
He opened the door and saw you were.... packing? God, you're really not joking.
"Yes?", you gathered the strength to look up at him for the first time in months! Due to his 'business trips' and you swear to god you would have fell down crying as your knees went weak.
"Is it...", he stumbled to say further but he knew he had to confront you with this, "is it because of that thing we talked about? On the phone?"
You knew you will burst out crying in front of him if he talked any further and because of that you couldn't speak either, holding tight onto lips to avoid the tears.
"Uh huh mmmhh mmmhh" you nodded and tried to avoid eye contact.
Oh no! Satoru knew he messed up. But he couldn't just let you... leave!? How could he? He knows and you too, that you are the only person who makes him vulnerable to the point he acts like child, only with you. You are the only one who actually makes him happy and content with his life in this miserable shite world. No words describe your and his relationship. So just how could he just let you leave?
"Y/n. I get it. You want kids." He mumbles, "then we'll have kids! Okay?" He declared.
You looked at him, and when he said that he looked as if he's been held under gun point, reluctant, yet... determined?
No! Yes, you do want children but the role of a father cannot be forced upon a man! That way the child will only be a 'burden' rather than a child born out of love and acceptance.
"No need." You announced and turned your back to him and started putting your clothes in the bag. "My mind can't be changed"
Gojo was left puzzled. He is ready to give you what you had been asking the day you both got married, what his and your parents wanted and the entirety of the Jujutsu Society had a keen eye on.
"I can't let you leave y/n like this", he said not knowing what to do either.
"Okay, I'll put on some fresh clothes.", you replied unbothered.
"No y/n i I told you once you're married you can't!", Satoru tried to come up with some reasoning.
"How the FUCK i cannot?" You yelled right onto his face, throwing the dress in your hand on the floor, annoyed at everything and anything.
"You just CAN'T!", Satoru tried to hold his sanity together.
"I AM FUCKING LEAVING! Divorce or NOT!", You snapped at him and went to pick the dress up and put it in the bag.
"Listen y/n, we can't go with divorce, it'll cause a lot of talk in the family and there's more but we just can't...", he tried to reason with you calmly but you were not in the mood.
"Why do you suddenly want me in your life when from the past fucking 4 years all you have done is being out on your trips?" You sneered and mocked, "Announcing we're going to have kids! Wow! That's not how it works Satoru!"
Satoru now lost it.
"Then what IS IT YOU WANT!? Haven't i given enough? You wanted this marriage! Not me! But i went for it because it was you! Went against my family for you and kept you away from them but what do you care" (your in-laws are toxic and would love to dance over your grave)
"Thats because i refuse to be your whore! You called me up whenever you felt like it. Might as well be your wife rather than just be some whore you sleep with on friday nights."
You recognized what you just babbled out and its disgusting. Your hands involuntarily moved and covered your mouth. You couldn't ever fathom the words you puked.
It is NOT like that! Not at all! You love Satoru, you Have been for a long time! And to have him as your husband is a dream come true! But how could say such lowly things.
Satoru just stood there. It was like one explosion after the other. So that is it? You came to him... for looks? For money? For sex? Goddammit! Satoru wanted to laugh because women of his family warned him not to marry some average human girl, saying further that you'll rob him of his money one day. But he didn't and just stood there watching the horror in your eyes unfold.
Satoru saw you as the only person in his life that made him actually understand the definition of love. Especially someone human, a non sorcerer like you. Thought of you made him content and calm, knowing he has someone waiting for him...... but not anymore.
He rubbed his temple as he'd been without an eye covering this whole time and his head ached a little with all this drama unfolding. He smiled through and looked at you, "that's what you think of me y/n?"
"No-no Satoru! Thats not what meant! Ugh! I don't want the divorce anymore!-"
He interrupted, "ah its okay, totally okay. I'll sign em."
Gojo was awfully calm and collected and you knew that when he's like this he would explode like a volcano if irked.
"No i will not let you!" You screamed and pushed him and ran out of the room in a frenzy to retrieve the divorce papers and tore the sections with your signature into tiny unrecognizable trash.
Satoru walked into the kitchen and just stood there. "You can have this house. I'll have Ijichi send down some papers later."
You eyes widened, "what..... papers?"
"Separation papers", he replied.
His gaze went around the house randomly and said, "since you don't wanna be a-" he stop and looks at you but continues.
"Since you do not wish to be a 'whore', you're free from me. I don't want chaos in both of our families so im suggesting separation. Yeah? Works in favor of both of us"
You were shook. You knew what you were doing when you brought the divorce papers but you didn't expected it to become so real.
"I'm leaving now. I'll send for my things so please don't throw my things just yet! Haha." Satoru was throwing jokes at a moment like this.
Damage has been done.
You ran out as soon as you saw him leave. You kept saying that its not what you meant and there's more to it and what not. But he just wore his blindfold and got into the car.
You saw him shut the door on your face and uttered his last words as your husband to you....
"Congratulations, Ms y/n. This'll be the last time you'll see me and when you think you're ready for divorce, lemme know!"

Phil and Tubbo's conversation was so interesting. Because when Tubbo suggested killing Forever, Phil got upset. He immediately put himself in the place of Forever, to try to point out to Tubbo that Forever means as much to Phil as Phil means to Tubbo, to show that Phil couldn't bring himself to do that to Forever. But Tubbo's very logical, but he's also very ruled by his emotions. So the logical conclusion is yes, that would be his reaction even if it was Phil, because emotionally the eggs have to come first.
And what if it was Tubbo himself? He didn't really answer the question. He instead claimed that it couldn't happen to him, because he just focuses on his factories. But that wasn't a no. And I think Phil would have liked to hear that Tubbo would want the same done to himself for Sunny's sake even less than he liked hearing that Tubbo would do it to him.
And coming back from Purgatory 2 maybe highlights some of the ways that Tubbo thinks, but Tubbo has always had this thought process. This isn't the first time this question has come up for Tubbo. When asked if he would choose Fred or his godchildren, the choice of his godchildren was immediate. Fred is one of the people who means the most to Tubbo; we all saw the way he reacted when he thought Fred was dead. Tubbo was devastated, but he'd still choose the eggs. And that was before he even had Sunny.
I think Forever would understand it and maybe even agree. The eggs come first.

▸ Luffy loves his hat. You love Luffy's hat. Luffy loves you. These three key factors lead into one situation; you wearing his hat whenever possible.
▸ His hat is literally the most important thing Luffy owns. It is literally the physical manifestation of his dream, and his "crown".
▸ So, naturally, you getting to wear his hat is the highest privilege. He's essentially trusting you with his dream.
▸ So when Luffy sees you wearing Brook's tophat.. He's a little distressed. Does this mean you like Brook more than him...? :[
▸ Hes not absolutely heartbroken, but it stirs something new and unpleasant in his gut. (jealousy). He plops his hat on your head and everything's fine again :]

▸ HE IS SO PETTY. AND JEALOUS. AND HE REFUSES TO COMMUNICATE IT LIKE A NORMAL PERSON.
▸ So naturally Ace shows the whole world you're his by placing the biggest statement piece of his outfit on you. The hat.
▸ But if you voluntarily want to wear the hat? Wear a piece of him on you because you just. Like it? Ace is on his KNEES. He struggles to feel wanted and to know that you love having a part of him with you??? Its so good. It soothes his soul.
▸ So of course the minute you meet Sabo, one of the closest people to Ace's heart- You destroy him emotionally. Hes devastated, betrayed, absolutely heartbroken.
▸ How could you wear Sabo's stupid little tophat ??? with the goggles that don't even serve a purpose??? Ace is disgruntled. He's offended. And he will be giving you the silent treatment for an hour tops before he comes crawling back.
▸ His hat is practically shoved onto your head. He's still mad, still has that little green monster clawing at his insides, but he's calmer with his oversized (equally stupid) hat perched on your head.
Law
▸ Law's hat is So important to him. It was given to him by his parents, so naturally to even BEGIN to earn the right to touch his hat is a Long, arduous journey.
▸ But once you've wormed your way into Law's heart- every part of him is yours. Including that sweet, warm hat.
▸ Law loves how you look in any of his clothes. He has a possessive streak a mile long, and no matter how good he is at hiding it he ALWAYS has a little smirk on his face when you wear anything thats his.
▸ The hat just ramps this up to 11. Something That core to his appearance, identity- unmistakably HIS, on you, who is now also unmistakably his? A dream come absolutely true.
▸ So naturally when hes sees the captian of the fucking strawhats putting his .. straw hat on you, Law nearly explodes. The straw hat is unmistakably LUFFY'S. The straw hat that is LUFFY'S, which is now on your head. Law short circuts. Seriously considers ending the alliance here and now by swapping Luffy's head and leg.
▸ He comes to a ... Peaceful? resolution when His hat is placed on its rightful pedestal... and Luffy (and hat) are out of his line of sight.

Aziraphale and Forgiveness, Pt 1: Not Just A Word

There are a lot of aspects to Aziraphale’s character that, when I first watched the show, I vibed with immediately without really thinking too hard about why. He just made deep emotional sense to me as a character. It wasn’t until I waded into the fandom that I realized how much metaphorical ink was being spilled over the question “Why does Aziraphale do the things he does?”
I would always think, “Well, that’s obvious, isn’t it?” but then find that I didn’t really have the words to explain why I thought it was obvious. It was just this ongoing feeling of “Well sure, that’s exactly the kind of thing I did/would have done as a born-and-raised evangelical teenager.” But then I would try to articulate the actual reasons younger-me would have had for doing the thing (and by extension, what I assumed Aziraphale’s reasons were) and immediately fumble because I hadn’t thought it through that far.
One of these elements of his character is his whole deal about forgiveness. Why is he always telling Crowley he forgives him or wishing for God to forgive him? Why is forgiveness one of his favorite things? Why is this such a prominent theme with his character?
(Me: Well, that’s obvious, isn’t it? Everyone else: What do you mean? Me: …uhhh well I definitely mean something, but yes, good question!)
So here’s my attempt at actually using my words to explain why I find this aspect of his character extremely relatable and realistic from an ex-religious-fundie perspective. And it's going to be in multiple parts because I have way too much to say.
The main point I want to make in this first part is that Aziraphale, like Crowley, has a ton of emotional baggage around the subject of forgiveness.
I see a lot of people ask things like "Why isn't Aziraphale more sensitive to the fact that forgiveness is an emotional hot button for Crowley, who fell?" And that's a fair question! But it's very clear to me whenever I watch the show that forgiveness is also an emotional hot button for Aziraphale, or else he wouldn't keep bringing it up. As with many of the things both characters have issues around, though, with Aziraphale it's less straightforward and less on the surface because of the amount of denial and rationalization his character runs on.
I think it's important to start here, because I firmly believe that when he expresses forgiveness:
He's not saying it glibly or meaninglessly.
He's not saying it because he's an angel and it's part of the brand/that's what angels are "supposed" to say.
He's not saying it because he's feeling smug and self-satisfied*.
He's not saying it because he's trying to put himself above the person he's forgiving.
He's saying it because forgiveness means something important to him, something very emotionally loaded and complicated.
*For the record, Aziraphale is 100% a smug, self-satisfied, holier-than-thou bastard sometimes. Exhibit A:

Seriously. Look at how pleased with himself he is while he gives Crowley that little speech about evil containing the seeds of its own destruction. This is Aziraphale being a smug bastard. (I say that with affection. It's one of my favorite Aziraphale moments. But he's totally talking shit here.)
But compare that to these:

Look at his face. He is not feeling pleased with himself (or anything) in these moments. I'm too low-tech to mess with video clips but it's the same with his tone of voice, which ranges from somber to devastated depending on the specific scene. Aziraphale brings up forgiveness when he's experiencing significant emotional distress.
This is already super long so I'm going to end this part here and start digging into what I think his specific damage is about forgiveness in the next post. But I wanted to start here because I've seen the take "Aziraphale is being a superior holier-than-thou prick when he forgives Crowley" several times.
(ETA: I’ve also seen the more positive take, “Aziraphale is just saying I love you the way an angel would,” and I also disagree with this because I don’t think it’s anywhere near that simple. But I digress.)
On the “superior holier-than-thou prick” interpretation: (1) Michael Sheen's acting choices in these scenes don't bear that out at all, and (2) as someone who was raised in a very toxic religious community from which I inherited a lot of Extremely Complicated Feelings about forgiveness that I'm still grappling with...I immediately saw a kindred spirit in Aziraphale in these moments.
Is it an ill-advised thing to say to Crowley of all people, especially that last time? Obviously. But is he being purposely cutting with his words when he says it? I think not.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)
He is not one to show much affection in public (he will probably grab your hand or hold you by the waist gently) but when no one is looking he will treat you like a queen/king. He will fill you with kisses and hug you warmly, hugging you in his arms and holding you close to his chest for a long time, both of you in silence.
B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)
Let's face it, it would be difficult to win Loki's friendship, he is distrustful and a little hard to trust (but if Mobius did it, anyone can!) You probably have to be patient and listen to him without judging him. When they are friends he will be like with Mobius, quite protective. Obviously he will annoy you with his jokes but he will always look out for you and make sure that nothing bad happens to you. Loki also knows that he can trust you to help him with any problem and vice versa.
C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)
Yes! Loki loves cuddles. He feels protected in your arms and a good cuddle makes him feel better when he is sad or afraid. I think he would prefer to be cuddlered but he is not opposed to the idea of ​​cuddlering you either.
D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)
Loki would like to move in with you whenever he sees fit, he will not make a decision without first consulting you. And if the answer is yes, at first I feel like Loki wouldn't clean or cook for the simple fact that he's not used to it (I imagine him like when he was sitting at the TVA reading the rules bored and lazing around). But then he would get used to it and help you in whatever way he can.
E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)
Well if you break up with him (gurl why would you do that?) poor Loki would be devastated 😭. He had already made up his mind about a life with you and you go and break up with him for "x" reason. But if he had to break up with you, uff man, he wouldn't even know how to start or what to say. Whatever the reason he broke up with you, he will be crying and explaining why he can't be with you, obviously he will tell you face to face.
F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)
I think Loki wouldn't rush things, maybe wait a few years to commit when he already knows that you'll really stay with him. You know, trust for Loki is not his strong suit and you really have to earn it, but he would definitely like to one day marry you and have you be his goddess/god.
G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)
LOKI IS A GENTLEMAN. He's the kind of man who will move the chair so you can sit down. His touches will always be soft and delicate, a gentle hand squeeze, a delicate grip on the arm or shoulder. As for emotions, he may be a little suspicious of showing emotions and opening up to you, I think that if something happened to him he would hide it and not because he doesn't trust you but because he doesn't want to worry you, but it's just a matter of time before he realize that it is healthier to seek your help and tell you what he feels, whether good or bad. He is a great listener so he will also prioritize your feelings.
H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)
Loki will not admit that he likes hugs, when you give him one he will pretend to be upset but inside he loves them. Over time the hugs will become more frequent, he no longer cares about hiding how much he loves hugs, Loki will hug you from behind, sitting on the couch, in a bed, wherever!
I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)
Loki said it first, but it took a while. You were going to say it first but you were afraid that he would take it the wrong way or reject you, you knew him and you didn't want to rush things. But Loki confessed his feelings when he was sure that you were in danger and he didn't want to lose you, only then did he realize how in love he was.
J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)
Oh ho ho, Loki is definitely one to get jealous. He trusts you of course but he dislikes people who come towards you with clear flirting intentions and although he knows that you can handle yourself, Loki sometimes approaches them and threatens them. Sometimes he goes a little overboard and that's when you'll have to stop him, he could kill for you, literally. So when he is jealous he will be quite touchy.
K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)
Loki's kisses are passionate and tender. He will kiss you sweetly but only when you are alone. He likes to kiss your hands, especially your knuckles, on your forehead, on your neck. He can even go further and kiss the inside of your thighs when they are in the mood. Loki likes kisses on his back and his jaw going down to his shoulders.
L = Little ones (How are they around children?)
It depends, if they are your children, he will be the most loving and protective father of the nine kingdoms. Now if, on the other hand, they are children he don't know, he will probably feel irritated and impatient.
M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)
Loki likes to hug you from the back and pull you towards him when you are sleeping, sometimes your head is against his chest but you are always next to his arms so when you get up he draws you towards him again, showering you with kisses on your hair until you insist that you have to get up
N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

YES, Loki couldn't live without you, you are the best thing that has happened to him, the only friend he has, the only one who loves him unconditionally for who he is and listens to him without judging. Without you his life feels empty as if something was missing, you are his anchor, his lighthouse that guides him, he does not want to lose that light that you are for him.
X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)
Since he loves to make mischief, sometimes he asks for your help, especially if it is to prank his brother Thor. He usually makes pranks on you too but they are not bad or hurtful.

He hates prejudiced people who only see him as a monster and don't bother trying to get to know him better.

Loki has a hard time falling asleep because of his nightmares, but he feels better if you are by his side holding his hand or hugging him. If not, he will probably fall asleep very late.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)
Alice can be affectionate, but she sometimes doesn’t show it. She loves giving gifts and such, and little physical touches. She isn’t a cuddle bug, but she’ll hold your hand, have a hand on your arm, things like that. She’s also very passionate with words, too.
Jasper is affectionate. Although he’s hesitant at first, he is definitely a cuddle bug. If you’re human, he’s obviously worried about it, always needing Alice there for support and normally keeping her right next to you, but after a while he grew to trust himself more. He’ll hold your hand, play with your hair, always have a seat for you (his lap in a non-sexual manner). I mean, you’ve seen how he is in the first Twilight movie.
B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)
You’ve seen Alice as a best friend with Bella, but both of them? Best girl talk. Jasper does give blunt advice, but he’s also like so good to talk to about boys and shit. Alice gets you the delulu stuff unless it’s bad, then she’s honest. But also like they will do stupid shit with you as long as you won’t get hurt, and if you could have two platonic soulmates they would be it.
C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)
Alice likes to cuddle. It’s not her love language or anything, but she does like it.
And we already know Jasper 100% loves it. Also like cuddling both of them? Either you or Alice in the middle, but you could probably convince Jasper if you tried hard enough. But normally he likes holding either one of you.
D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)
If you were turned, they would 100% live alone with you, and maybe even if you weren’t, but it would take a lot of convincing Jasper. Everyone would have their own duties for cooking, but yes they’re both good at it. Also I feel like Jasper would be better at cooking, if you needed. (Alice could probably light the kitchen on fire on accident so she stays away.)
E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)
Jasper would probably do most of the talking because he’s the only one who can be THAT blunt. They would want to be platonic afterwards, but it definitely emotionally devastated both of them. But they wouldn’t have to, because Alice would be able to see that yall would stay together, so unless you end it, they wouldn’t.
F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)
If Alice could see a future where you were together, that’s how that shit went. They don’t really marry quickly, I mean, Carlisle was the one that made them get married. So, obviously, it’s complex cause you’re three people, but if possible they’d get married to you after a while. Turning you… they would 100% wait at least three years. Keeping you young enough, but not too old. They waited until Alice said it was time from the visions.
G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)
I cannot stress this enough. 10/10 on the gentleness scale. They could easily break you if they were still human, so yeah of course they’re gentle. Also everything with them is gentle soft love. Somewhat old fashioned too. Jasper is not a woman beater, so even though it’s old fashioned it’s GENTLE. (Help why did I feel the need to say that)
H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)
They are huggers. I mean, Jasper is from Texas. (“I’m from Texas, I’m a hugger.” -my friends mom a couple years ago) and Alice gives a bunch of them. Jasper was hesitant at first, I mean, you’ve seen everything physical, why would this be different. But also neither of them let go first. Just saying.
(Wild card: if you were still human and having a meltdown, like Jasper would just pull you into a hug and hold you. He also knows when to calm you down or not, and if he thinks you need to cry he’ll let you cry.)
I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)
Jasper keeps Alice from saying it and freaking you out. But she says it quickly, obviously the first. He takes a bit longer, but he definitely said it first to you.
J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)
Jasper doesn’t really get jealous, Alice does a little bit, but normally she just squeezes the life (ha) out of Jaspers hand or will come up to you and who you’re talking to and pretend not to be bothered and when that person is away she’ll be unbothered and happy again.
K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)
Alice’s are quick. Little pecks all over your or Jaspers face and neck. She likes nose and forehead kisses for her.
Jaspers are soft but longer as well. He likes kissing your or Alice’s lips or forehead. He prefers lip kisses, but if you kissed any of his scars? He would melt. Absolutely putty in your hands. A little hesitant at first, but when you’re gentle with him? AHH.
L = Little ones (How are they around children?)
I feel like Alice isn’t great around babies but when they’re older she’s better. Jasper is pretty good with children, you see it with Renesmee.
M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)
They don’t really sleep so it’s kind of like every other time for them 🧍‍♀️ but like they have some sort of a routine consisting of the norm, and would be able to adapt to if you were a human and like had a different circumstance.
N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)
Cuddling. Reading. Shit like that. If you need to sleep, they pretty much establish a bedtime for you if you can’t take care of that yourself.

They remember everything. Well, Jasper doesn’t think he remembers everything, but if someone asks a question about like what your favorite color is or why you have a certain scar or something he’ll immediately have the answer. Alice doesn’t say anything, but she does know and remember everything you’ve told her and she knows random things about you from the future as well.
R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)
You got a camera, and went around taking pictures of everyone in the fall. You had a plan to get a cute picture with you and them, but you all ended up falling and there’s just a picture of that. No one got hurt, but it did turn out an epic picture. Did Alice sense it coming? Somehow, no, which is part of the reason she likes it so much.

Very protective. Do you remember in Eclipse when it says that Jasper got so many more bites because he was trying to protect her? If you’re human, it’s like that but worse. As long as you keep his heart protected and don’t break it? It’s all yours. Even if you did, it would be yours anyways—
With Alice she’s super protective as well. She knows you can deal with yourself. If a guy is flirting with you? That’s a different story. The same thing goes for her with protecting her heart.

So much fucking effort. You saw Bella’s birthday and wedding? Yours are like that too, but more stitched to fit you personally.

First of all I wanted to say I ADORE how you write Vox. Second (and more controversial) I think your depiction of him/rambles about the Vee dynamic pretty succinctly explains why the Vee polycule just…isn’t gonna happen. I’ve seen a lot of fans talk about Vox dating both Vel and Val, which is cute but also not something in-line with his character.
Obviously there’s the trust issues. This man can barely have friends let alone a partner (let alone TWO). But more interestingly, the narcissism and control issues means the idea of dating Velvette might actually be Vox’s personal hell. She’s an amazing business partner who’s good at her job while taking no shit, and that reflects really well on the Voxtec brand! But as a partner, she’d be reflecting on Vox’s personal tastes.
Paired with some of that remnant 1950s misogyny, it would be easy for him to think he’s the less dominant one in the relationship. She’s stable and hard to manipulate (unlike Val). She’s competent, secure in herself, and most likely not violent enough to relate to Vox’s outbursts (Alastor obviously, but also the wife killing thing). There just isn’t much there for Vox to feel superior about, and that could quickly send him into a spiral about how OTHERS perceive him.
On that subject, Velvette is INCREDIBLY perceptive. As a partner, she’d be much MUCH too close to Vox for comfort. She’d pick up on subtle reactions in a way Val just can’t/doesn’t prioritize enough to try. Maybe she carefully treads around his weak points when it comes to business, but if they were to get into an actual fight? She’d emotionally devastate him to the point he might not be able to pick up the pieces.
Lmao yes, certainly. This woman would ruin him. C'mon, one of the first things she said was "cut the bullshit Vox". Vox bullshits his way through life! He wouldn't survive being called out daily. He desperately needs all these advantages he has over Val, it makes the relationship balanced and Vox can feel secure in it. So yeah, I think you described it perfectly why him and Velvette are not really a good match.

Also I have a very strong headcanon that Vox used to be crazily attracted to Velvette because on the surface she seems to be everything he wants in the partner. They could be a perfect power couple managing hell's greatest empire together. But the first attempt at flirting went so fucking wrong they agreed to never do this again (Vox was crying in the pillow from the embarrassment afterward, Velvette was kind enough to never mention it)

one idea i really like as far as Halstarion is Halsin not actually picking up on Astarion's dissociation or the way that he's going through the motions, because in many respects Astarion is very good at faking it, and Halsin himself is such an earnest and honest person that it doesn't even occur to him that someone might be doing what Astarion's doing
at first, it's just a practiced seduction, the mask Astarion has worn for the last 200 years - he's interested in Halsin, Halsin's interested in him, they can have a fun time together, and if it all seems a little practiced or flowery, well, Astarion's just kind of like that, isn't he? he's a melodramatic, poetic, silver-tongued sort of person, very performative in many respects, so why wouldn't he be that way during sex?
Halsin is so dedicated to servicing his partner that he tries very hard to be what he thinks Astarion wants from him, and Astarion meanwhile is playing the role of seductive little minx who needs protecting... so Halsin is passionate, eager, and dominant with him
he checks in, he asks Astarion what he wants and how he likes it, and at every point Astarion encourages him - he likes this, he wants this, that's good, more, harder, yes, just like that
i can imagine he would pick up on more blatant instances of dissociation, ask Astarion if he's alright or nudge him back into being present with him - but zoning out or getting distracted or in your own head during sex is not abnormal
as he starts to learn more about Astarion's past, he starts to understand the need for more caution, but surely he's shown himself to be someone who cares for Astarion's comfort and pleasure and who can be told no or stop or not like that, right? he can't really make decisions about what Astarion is thinking or feeling for Astarion, he has to take him at his word
and then we get to Moonrise, and what happens with Araj, and Astarion's confession - that he had no feelings for Halsin at first, that he just did what he felt like he needed to do in order to survive, that even as he came to enjoy it and sincerely care for Halsin he also still felt used and disgusted with himself and that he doesn't know how to have sex without feeling that way, and that because he's come to care for Halsin, he wants to take a break and try to figure his own shit out
i think that would be really devastating for Halsin precisely because he's so oriented towards his partner's pleasure. realizing that he's been having sex with someone who didn't want it, was going through the motions, and was often triggered during or afterwards and didn't realize it would really shake him, i think.
it's not like he doesn't understand, of course. he has his own trauma and i can imagine that he engaged in all kinds of unhealthy sexual behaviors in the immediate aftermath of it (and that even if his relationship with sex is healthier now, he still tends to neglect himself emotionally in a way that's very common with trauma, and still struggles to see his own desires as mattering as much as his partner's) and is probably very familiar with the experience of wanting or enjoying something while simultaneously being triggered by it
but it's terrifying for him to realize that he missed that! it's not really his fault for taking Astarion at his word, but it would feel like it was and like he'd done something terrible
and since he spent so much time asking and checking in before and Astarion just lied and went along with what he thought Halsin wanted and agreed to things that ultimately ended up hurting him because he didn't know how to say no... how can he believe Astarion going forward?
i think it would really damage his trust in Astarion when it comes to sex, and that he'd be incredibly wary of resuming their sexual relationship. it's not that he doesn't want to - quite the opposite, he still very much desires Astarion, and if anything, this revelation makes him even more eager to give Astarion real pleasure and have the kind of sex Astarion wants to have with him - but that he just doesn't know how to believe that Astarion wants to, and the idea of harming Astarion sexually (not in terms of like, masochism or kink or anything, but causing emotional harm during sex because of Astarion's trauma) completely terrifies him
i just like the idea of him wanting to help Astarion have a healthier relationship with sex and process his trauma, but also having his own issues that make it hard for him, and needing time of his own and assurances for his own comfort before he can start engaging sexually with Astarion again, and still struggling and being very cautious

"YOU'RE A SHIT DAD! YOU DRIVE MOM AWAY BY CHEATING ON HER AND NOW, YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU SOLD MY CAR?! FOR WHAT?! TO BUY MORE FUCKING BOOZE?!", I scream,
Shoving him backwards. Just then, my father slaps me across me the face, causing a gasp to escape me as a result. I hold the stinging hand mark on my cheek, as the ringing began to pick up in my ears.
"Bitch to someone that fucking cares", he spits,
Sitting back down and picking up another bottle.
"Kill yourself", I say under my breath,
Before storming back up to my room and slamming the door behind me.
My life was a living nightmare that I couldn't escape from. Ever since my mom left, everything went to shit. All my father ever did was turn to alcohol to fill that void and he used me as the punching bag to distract himself from his own misery.
I wanted to go with her, but she was already gone before I even knew what happened. The only reason I found out was by reading the note she left on the kitchen counter when I woke up that morning.
To say I was devastated would be an understatement.
As I sat on the foot of my bed, struggling to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill and remembering the pain I felt on the day day she left, I hear something rustle on the other side my window.
"What the fuck?", I mutter to myself,
Getting back up. I reluctantly make my way to the window and open it to look outside.
At first, I don't see anything, but then I feel a hand grab at my wrist, making me scream at the top of my lungs, as I pulled away.
"Hey...it's just me", Billy reassures,
"Billy? What the-"
"I'm sorry. Don't hate me", he interrupts,
While climbing through to the inside of my room.
"What are you doing here?", I question,
"I heard you screaming from down the street", he answers,
Dusting himself off.
Billy and I met during sophomore year and got together a few months later. Him and his friends were the only people I actually enjoyed hanging out with. My dad never cared about me, so it was nice to have people that did. Whenever another fight would happen, they'd always insist on me staying the night at one of theirs.
"It's fine", I sigh in defeat,
Sitting back down on my bed.
"Doesn't sound like it", he joins me,
Before taking my hand into his.
"Look, I ain't gonna make you tell me anything you don't want to...but I'm worried about you, kid", he caresses the back of my hand,
As I nervously chew at my bottom lip.
"You know I'm always here to listen"
"It just sucks, Billy. He fucked up things up with my mom and now he's fucking things up for me", I explained,
He shakes his head, tucking a rouge strand of hair behind my ear. It was just then he notices the hand mark on my cheek.
"What the fuck?", he exclaims,
"Billy-"
"Did he fucking hit you?", he cuts off,
"Yes, but, it doesn't matter-"
"Like hell, it doesn't!", he yells,
Getting off the bed and rushing towards my door, when I make a desperate attempt to stop him by wrapping my arms around his waist.
"Billy, please don't!", I shriek,
Not wanting to make things were.
"That son of a bitch can't just hurt you and get away with it!"
"Billy", I sob,
Unable to hold back the tears from spilling any longer. His body softens and he looks back at me from underneath his arm.
"It'll only make things worse, please", I pleaded,
Seeing how distraught I was, he takes a deep breath and turns to hold me tight in his arms.
"Okay, fine"
"He'll hurt you too. Just...please don't"
I would've never been able to forgive myself if something happened to Billy.
"Hey, look at me", he says,
Pulling away and holding my warm face in his hands.
"I'm not letting you stay here. My old man's out of town for the week, so you can stay at mine"
"I couldn't impose-"
"It's not imposing, if I ask"
"I'd make me feel a lot better to know you were fine and what better way to make sure of that, then to have you stay with me?"
"I don't know, Billy"
On one hand, my dad couldn't give less of a shit where I slept, but on the other, I hated feeling like a charity case.
"Look, we could invite the gang over and watch some scary movies. I know you're a sucker for those", he suggests,
Making me laugh to myself.
"We could even stop by the store and get you your favorite snacks, obviously, it's my treat", he added,
Taking my hands into his. I couldn't help but sigh contently at his sweet he was. Every time we were together, it felt like nothing else mattered, except us in that moment.
"So?"
I take a moment, before finally agreeing.
"That does sound nice"
"Yes! Alright, pack your shit and meet me outside. My car's parked down the street, so I need to get it", he exclaims excitedly,
Pressing his lips go mine, as I giggle at his eagerness.
"I'll call everyone and let them know we're meeting at yours"
"Sounds like a plan. See you in a minute", he says,
Hurrying out the window. I pick up the landline and dial up Tatum and Sidney first. A few rings go by and they both answer at the same time.
Sid: Hello?
Tate: Hey!
Me: Hey, so, impromptu movie sesh at Billy's. Are you girls' down?
Tate: Hell yeah!
Sid: I'd love to, but my dad would freak if I asked to go to Billy's house
Tate: Then, don't tell him? Just say you're staying at mine
Sid: I don't know-
Tate: We're going
Sid: Tate!
Tate: Oh, come on, Sidney, I'll pick you up!
Me: I really want you guys there. I'm inviting the guys too and I'd rather not drown in all that testosterone

The moment I was done pulling up the zipper, Stu finally answered the call.

Me: Hey, Stu! Got a minute?
Stu: Oh, I've got all the time in the world for you, gorgeous
Me: *Scoffs*
Just then, Randy joins the call.
Randy: Hello?
Stu: Ugh, why'd you add rat-boy?
Randy: If I'm rat-boy, what the hell does that make you?
Stu: Incredibly sexy in comparison?
Randy: You know what-
Me: Jesus, could we please cut the biggest-dick-contest short?
Randy: He started it!

“About two weeks ago we talked about how we were going to make decisions for this family together. We said some would be unilateral and some would have to be jointly discussed… do you remember that?”
The memory of that conversation slams into the front of Eddie’s mind like a tidal wave because he not only remembers it; he knows he was the one who suggested they talk about it. “Yes, I remember.”
“And about two months ago, we had two conversations… one happened the morning after we got engaged and the other one happened several days later. We uh, agreed we’re equals in this relationship and the money we have and earn is for our family.”
Eddie nods his head in agreement because they discussed those things too.
“EDDIE, ME AND CHRIS NEED YOU!” Buck whisper shouts with tears in his eyes.

Chapter 8 - Buck, Eddie and Chris all have their own therapists and during their sessions, they reflect on their pasts while they’re in the present so they can prepare for their future together as a family.
Chapter 9 - Buck and Eddie are there for each other when Buck has to testify as a witness during the trial.  But by the end of it, they’ll both realize their individual and shared traumas are going to keep resurfacing until they talk about them, deal with the fact that they’re in love with one another and face the fact that they can’t live without each other.
Chapter 10 - As Buck and Eddie finally begin to confront their past traumas, they realize how much they need each other to fill in the gaps of their memories.  Additionally, the universe screams at them for what appears to be the one hundredth time so Buck can realize he doesn’t have to ‘find it’ because he already ‘made it’ and Eddie’s reminded tomorrow isn’t promised and he doesn’t have to die alone if he doesn’t want to.
Chapter 11 - A “virga” or dry thunderstorm is in the forecast but once the rain starts, the thunderstorm happening outside won’t be able to match the storm brewing inside between Buck and Eddie.  It’s the universe’s final scream and when the tumultuous winds begin to blow, they’ll have one last chance to hold onto everything they’ve built over the last six years or they’ll lose it all forever.
Chapter 12 - Buck and Eddie have always shared a deep physical attraction and an emotional intimacy that’s unmatched but now that they’re in a relationship, they’re learning how to navigate the romantic intimacy they’ve been waiting for six years to explore. The love they have for each other is a once in a lifetime, soulmate, love of their lives type of love that transcends space and time.
Chapter 13 - While navigating the newness of their romantic relationship, Buck and Eddie take advantage of every moment they spend together. As their individual lives, people from their pasts, time constraints and the possibility of losing each other again make attempts to interrupt and interfere with their journey to forever, they love, care for, support and hold onto each other even tighter to withstand it all.

Chapter 17 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to departing Los Angeles for their international adventure, a moment in time will remind them; life is fragile, tomorrow isn’t promised and every second of everyday should be cherished because everything can change in an instant. The result of that realization will cause them to hold onto each other even more.
Chapter 18 - As Buck, Eddie and Chris prepare for family gatherings before and during the Thanksgiving holiday, the “Santa Ana Winds” start to blow and all sorts of expected and unexpected familial drama ensues.

As we all engage with the Egg arc on QSMP, I know we're all having a fun time talking about how emotionally devastating it all is, but I have seen some concerning takes about this, so I want to also reiterate that it is fiction. It's not real.
You can have real emotions about fiction (talk to any D&D player whos run a long campaign about this), but it is essentially fake, it is something you can box up and put away. And if you think you can't tell the difference between a fictional roleplay and real life child death, you need to step away.
Cause like, I have been seeing people comparing egg deaths to real life tragedies, and like. Guys. That's just offensively disrespectful. I do not want Chayanne to die. I'm team "storm heaven and get all the eggs back". I want the happy dragon ending. I have also had real life children die in my life and equating a pixel egg despawning to that makes me actually mad. We can have fun with it but this is fiction and you need to be clear to yourself that it is fiction. The QSMP admins are not "responsible to give you a happy ending" because it is essentially not real, they are ethically responsible for how they treat people in the real world (the players and the admins) not for what happens in the story they are telling.
There are two aspects of this that are important. The first is the most basic. Fiction is not real. It's lies we tell ourselves recreationally. No real people were harmed. No one actually died. The egg's admins are fine and now playing league of legends on stream. You can have real emotions about fiction, but you can also take comfort in the fact that the bad thing didn't actually happen. This allows you to engage with topics that you would never want to happen in real life (horror media, for example), in an entertaining way. Fiction is a safe spot to explore really concerning topics, whether that's something you're afraid of, something that has happened to you, or something that you'd never want to see happen in real life but it scratches that brain itch. And that isn't intended to say that you have to be comfortable with every topic in fiction. Suicide themes even in fiction are too close to real life for me, so I stay away from them. You get to set your own comfort levels with what fiction you're comfortable with. And that leads into my second point. The essense of fiction is that you are opting into it. Except in vanishingly rare cases, if you are engaging with something fictional, you are giving ongoing consent to engaging with the story by continuing to watch/read/listen to it. At any point you can tap out and step away, back into real life. You have the power to control your experience and say "yes I am watching this" or "no I do not want to engage with this actually". You can take the headphones off. You are an active player in how you deal with the fictional story, and if it gets too much for you, you get to step away. You get to write fanfiction and it is just as real as the original. If someone is dying in real life, no amount of blocked terms and telling your friends not to discuss it is going to keep it from happening. It is inescapable. It happens to you, it is enacted on you, you are a passive figure and you have no control. The only thing you have a control over is how you react to it, and this is why a huge element of grief is the powerlessness.
You have power over fiction. You can opt out of it. And if you can't tell the difference between a fake story and real events, a) you need to do work on that, because there is a lot of really upsetting content in fiction that is going to fuck you up, b) you need to step away from the fake story that is doing harm to you, and use that power that fiction gives you to opt out of it. Block terms. Unfollow people. Go do something in real life. Fiction is not real.

'If Peaky Blinders made the Irish actor a household name, will Christopher Nolan’s nuclear blockbuster send him into the stratosphere? He talks about extreme weight loss, hating school and why his next character won’t be a smoker.
Cillian Murphy is struggling with what he can and can’t say about his title role in Oppenheimer, the latest Christopher Nolan epic, such is the secrecy surrounding this film. Murphy is under “strict instructions” not to talk about the content. Which is awkward when you’ve flown to his home in Ireland to interview him specifically about playing the physicist who oversaw the creation of the atomic bomb, later detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It’s not clear who issued these instructions. Nolan? The studio? The US government? All I know is that as well as Murphy being gagged by hefty NDAs, I am not allowed to see it (“bit unfortunate”, he concedes).
So, yes, here we sit in an empty upstairs room of a restaurant near his house in Monkstown, Dublin, working out how to do this. The room is dark, the sun shining through a solitary Velux lighting his features like a Géricault. The only background noise is the low hum of a wine refrigerator. Murphy loathes interviews, looks visibly tortured at points. But he relaxes when I ask if he’s pleased with Oppenheimer. “I am, yeah,” he says. “I don’t like watching myself – it’s like, ‘Oh, fucking hell’ – but it’s an extraordinary piece of work. Very provocative and powerful. It feels sometimes like a biopic, sometimes like a thriller, sometimes like a horror. It’s going to knock people out,” he adds. “What [Nolan] does with film, it fucks you up a little bit.”
Nolan wouldn’t disagree. The director recently told Wired magazine that some of those who’d seen it were left “absolutely devastated … they can’t speak”. Which sounds like a bad thing, but is related perhaps to the thought of the 214,000 Japanese people, overwhelmingly civilians, who lost their lives when the bombs were dropped. Kai Bird, the historian who co-authored American Prometheus, the 2008 biography of J Robert Oppenheimer upon which the film is based, said he was still “emotionally recovering” from seeing the film, clarifying that it was “a stunning artistic achievement”.
Murphy’s portrayal is said to be astonishing (“Oscar-worthy” is the buzz). This is not unbelievable. While Hollywood might not know him as a leading man, this quietly intense actor has long been celebrated in the UK and Ireland, most notably for his nine-year stint as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders. When he first appeared on our screens, looking like a renaissance painting of Saint Sebastian – chiselled head contrasting with translucent blue eyes – it was impossible not to be distracted. He appeared first on stage in Enda Walsh’s Disco Pigs, then the screen adaptation. Then 28 Days Later; Intermission; Ken Loach’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Previous collaborations with Nolan include the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk, “significant milestones in my career,” he says, adding that Nolan “might be the perfect director”.
It was Nolan’s wife, the producer Emma Thomas, who called Murphy one afternoon at the home he shares with his wife, artist Yvonne McGuinness, and two teenage sons. Nolan doesn’t actually have a telephone, or an email, or computer for that matter: “He’s the most analogue individual you could possibly encounter.” So, Emma said Chris would like a word and passed the receiver, then the director came on the line. “Cillian, I’d love you to play the lead in this new thing,” he said. Murphy tries to recreate his response to this news. “I was lost for words. But thrilled. Like beyond thrilled.” It is characteristic of Murphy that the modulation of his voice barely changes as he expresses this. He was so stunned, he had to sit down. “Your mind explodes.”
In the absence of the three-hour feature, I scrutinise Oppenheimer’s three-minute trailer. It’s a rush of snapshots against the crackling of a Geiger counter. There’s Murphy, short back and sides, lifting 1940s eye goggles; blue and red atoms coming at him fast; orange light; white light; blackout; silence. Massive explosion against the backdrop of space. Overlaid is Murphy’s narration, “We’re in a race against the Nazis / and I know what it means / if the Nazis have a bomb.” There’s Matt Damon looking porky as army general Leslie Groves, director of the Manhattan Project: “They have a 12-month head start.” Murphy, pointing with cigarette: “18.”
He has put back on some of the weight he lost for the part, I’m relieved to see; his skin isn’t quite so taut over his skull and there are freckles over those eagle-wing cheekbones. He was determined to nail the scientist’s silhouette “with the porkpie hat and the pipe”, testing himself to see how little he could eat. “You become competitive with yourself a little bit which is not healthy. I don’t advise it.” He won’t say how many kilograms he lost, or what food the nutritionist told him to cut out. NDA? “Ach, no. I don’t want it to be, ‘Cillian lost x weight for the part’.”
Then again, the hurtling speed at which Nolan worked, crisscrossing the US, made it easy to skip meals. Murphy began to forget about food in the same way he began to forget about sleep. “It’s like you’re on this fucking train that’s just bombing. It’s bang, bang, bang, bang. You sleep for a few hours, get up, bang it again. I was running on crazy energy; I went over a threshold to where I was not worrying about food or anything. I was so in it, a state of hyper …” he gropes for the word, “hyper something. But it was good because the character was like that. He never ate.” Oppenheimer subsisted on little more than Chesterfield cigarettes and double-strength martinis, rims dipped in lime. “Cigarettes and pipes. He would alternate between the two. That’s what did for him in the end,” Murphy adds, a nod to the scientist’s death from cancer in 1967. “I’ve smoked so many fake cigarettes for Peaky and this. My next character will not be a smoker. They can’t be good for you. Even herbal cigarettes have health warnings now.”
I raise method acting and Murphy tilts his head and frowns. “Method acting is a sort of … No,” he says, firm but with a half smile. Oppenheimer had many defining characteristics, not least walking on the balls of his feet and a vocal tic that sounded like nim-nim-nim, but Murphy didn’t want to do an impression. Nolan was obsessed with the Brillo-texture hair, so they spent “a long time working on hair”. And the voice. The real question for Murphy was what combination – ambition, madness, delusion, deep hatred of the Nazi regime? – allowed this theoretical physicist to agree to an experiment he knew could obliterate humankind. “He was dancing between the raindrops morally. He was complex, contradictory, polymathic; incredibly attractive intellectually and charismatic, but,” he decides, “ultimately unknowable.
“Listen, it’s not like a spoiler,” he says, checking himself before he leans in, “but there are incidents in his early life that were quite worrying; very erratic.” They are in the film and the book, he steers. I suspect he is referring to Oppenheimer’s postgrad at Cambridge in 1926, when he placed a poisoned apple on the desk of a tutor towards whom he harboured complicated feelings of inadequacy and jealousy. Arguably, this was attempted murder. But Oppenheimer’s rich New York parents rushed in to bundle him into psychoanalysis. He was diagnosed with “dementia praecox”, a term describing symptoms associated with schizophrenia.
Murphy likes these complex characters; they’re his meat. People that don’t necessarily follow the – yawn – traditional transformative arc of storytelling. Not villains, exactly (although he’s played a few, including Scarecrow in Dark Knight and Jackson Rippner in Red Eye): “Villains are good if they’re well written, but if it’s one note or a trope, then they are dull.” He likes a script to stretch leisurely into all corners of the human condition, “all the shades”. At the same time, you have to understand his exceptional ability to portray interiority, physically manifesting intense human emotion without a word, radiating fierce, consuming energy. Which he does today, actually, when I stray off track.
Although Nolan is usually, shall we say, antiseptic in his approach to romance, Oppenheimer represents a significant shift. He told Wired the love story aspect “is as strong as I’ve ever done”. It features prolonged full nudity for Murphy and Florence Pugh, who plays Oppenheimer’s ex-fiancee, as well as sex, and there are complicated scenes with Emily Blunt, who plays his wife, “that were pretty heavy”. Murphy turns coy: “I’m under strict instructions not to give away anything.”
He asks if I’ve heard of chemistry tests. “They put two actors in a room to see if there’s any spark, and have all the producers and director at a table watching. I don’t know what metric they use, and it seems so outrageously silly, but sometimes you get a chemistry and nobody knows why.” This is a roundabout way of saying his scenes with Blunt and Pugh conjure this magic. His established bond with Blunt (they co-starred in A Quiet Place II) meant “the audience gets something for free”, he says. “You can be immediately vulnerable and open, and try stuff. There were moments where I remember saying, ‘I couldn’t have done that if it wasn’t with you.’”
Murphy, 47, grew up the eldest of four in Cork. His father was a civil servant, his mother a French teacher. They were a middle-class family, musical; his father “can pick up any instrument”, his brother played piano, and they regularly got stuck into “traditional Irish sessions”. Bookshelves were stuffed with literature, the radio often on, the “shitty” TV set not so much. Home life was busy but his parents taught him French and Irish, and sent him to an all-boys academic, rugby-playing private school. “I got all the education” he says, drily.
The story of how much he disliked the Presentation Brothers College, the hard-drinking masculine emphasis, how he found solace playing guitar in a band, is much rehearsed and he says today he doesn’t want “to slag the school off. I hear it’s great now.” Something about this experience seems nonetheless unsettling. He had one friend, who is still his best friend, “so I wasn’t, like, an outcast”. He played rugby for the first couple of years, but abandoned it “because everyone was all of a sudden towering over me.” Was it an unhappy time? He shifts. “It was OK. I was a bit of a messer, like I’d get in trouble and say nothing. It wasn’t the ideal school for me.”
He enrolled in and dropped out of a law degree at University College Cork, which created some friction with his parents (when I ask if his own sons will go to university in Dublin, he says, “Whatever they want”). He continued with the band, his first creative love but the one that got away. When they were offered a contract with Acid Jazz records, he turned it down for a number of reasons, he says, crucially that he didn’t feel good enough. He still writes and plays at home but, no, you won’t be hearing any of his recordings, ever, he says.
It’s a funny thing talking to Murphy. He’s at once garrulous (on the craft, or literature, or ideas) and reticent (pretty much anything else). I sense in previous interviews that he skates over issues close to his heart – such as the expression of emotion in Ireland and the need to teach empathy in schools. But when I try to drill in to these topics, get to the root, he clams shut, emitting energy like a nuclear reactor.
Later, in a different context, he will tell me a truth: “I’m stubborn and lacking in confidence, which is a terrible combination. I don’t want to put anything out that I don’t think is excellent.” But he clearly hates the pantomime of publicity, asking why I am returning to certain topics and repeating lines I’ve read elsewhere. I can almost see him at home with its views towards the Irish Sea, complaining to his wife as they tuck into supper: “Another one, asking the same fucking questions.”
If he could get out of going to Cannes, of standing on red carpets, dressed as is his habit for a funeral, hair shellacked, hands in pockets; if he could turn his back on the coloured-foam mics thrust in his face, he would. He really would. No, it dawns on him now, there’s something even worse than the red carpet; there’s the talkshow rounds. The very word “talkshow” comes out of him like a pain from his ribcage, as if the parcelling out of amuse-bouche anecdotes, offering them up to the forced laughter of that false god of show business, the studio audience, is in itself the most cheapening experience known to mankind.
“I do them because you’re contractually obliged to. I just endure them. I’ve always found it difficult. I’ve said this so many, many times.” Then there’s the double wince of realising that, yes, he’s done it again. He’s laid into the industry that feeds him. His hands raise slowly in surrender. “I want to just caveat this by saying, I’m so privileged. I’m so happy to be doing what I love. I’m really lucky. But I don’t enjoy the personality side of being an actor. I don’t understand why I should be entertaining and scintillating on a talkshow. I don’t know why all of a sudden that’s expected of me. Why?”
There’s an awkward silence. I say that he reminds me of Naomi Osaka, the tennis player who refused to talk to journalists after the French Open in 2021. He says he feels “100%” sympathy with her, “because why should she have to perform?” Then he relents. “But I get it. I get it’s a kind of ecosystem where the film feeds the publicity which feeds the talkshows which goes back and feeds the film, so, like, that’s how it works. I suppose I’m just not good at it. At interviews, at this stuff,” he gestures at me. He says after he leaves me today he’ll be going down the stairs thinking of all the things he’s said and worrying it’s come across all wrong. “Do you know what Sam Beckett said? ‘I have no views to inter.’ I love that. That should be the interview.”
We return to his art, the tension falls away and he’s back to his charming self, charged air evaporating. Since Oppenheimer, he’s also wrapped Small Things Like These, an adaptation of Claire Keegan’s brilliant novella set in 1985 in a small Irish town on the edge of which is a convent and “laundry”. Murphy is a huge fan of Keegan. He remembers reading her 2010 novel Foster on a train and having to pull his hoodie over his face because he was crying so hard. Anyway, he’d wanted to work with the Peaky Blinders director Tim Mielants and they were throwing ideas around in his sitting room when Murphy’s wife suggested Small Things. “No, there’s no way,” Murphy said. “That’s going to be gone already.” But when he called the agent, he found it was available. “I went, ‘No, you’ve got to be fucking kidding.’” Murphy pitched the idea to Matt Damon, who has set up a studio with Ben Affleck. “From there it all just happened really quickly.”
Murphy plays Bill Furlong who, funnily enough, is a man of few words. Keegan’s light-touch writing is everything he loves in art – the sense that you are not being bashed over the head by an idea. That’s how he tries to act, he adds. “I’m always trying to cut lines in scenes, because I feel like you can transmit it. Like when you see a person on a train thinking, or driving a car, and you are purely observing someone and feeling the energy that is vibrating from them. That’s the sort of acting I love. In a lot of film and television, they want to cut those bits to go to the action. I like films that pose the big questions and then leave it to the audience.” Perhaps this is at the heart of his reticence in interviews? That he doesn’t feel the need to explain.
He still finds it “nuts” that the last of the Magdalene laundries closed in 1996, that it was illegal to buy condoms in Ireland until 1985, that divorce was made legal only in 1996. He remembers vividly thousands of people still going to see moving statues in Cork when he was growing up. “Crazy. But, like, how far the country has come since then, we’re so socially advanced now compared with where we were. But you must look back. And art is a better way of doing that than reading all these reports [into the laundries].” (Afterwards, he emails me: “The nation is actually dealing with an unresolved collective trauma. Who knows how long this will take to heal, but I feel strongly that art, film and literature can help with that process. It’s a kinder and gentler sort of therapy. I hope that our movie can help with that in its own little way.”)
Because he’s a nice man, because he doesn’t want me to feel bad about our encounter, and because he’s generous and hospitable, Murphy finishes by telling me some of the best places to visit in Ireland. He and his family are staying here for the summer. They’ve had it with air travel and his home town of Cork is only a couple of hours away. He supplies me with other recommendations: a great book he’s just read, Brian, by Jeremy Cooper, oh, and there’s the Francis Bacon studio exhibition I should catch on my way out.
But before I go, what has he learned from playing Oppenheimer? Foremost, he says, that scientists think differently. He knew this already from playing physicist Robert Capa in Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (2007) and hanging out in Cern, home of the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, for research. “I had dinner with all these geniuses. I’ll never understand quantum mechanics, but I was interested in what science does to their perspective.” He sought their opinions on subjects that matter – love, politics, our place in the universe, “infinity, or whatever the fuck. Because they have a completely different way of taking in information than we do. I remember one scientist saying, ‘I don’t believe in love. It’s a biological phenomenon, the exchange of hormones between the female and the male. That’s all. Love is a nonsense.’” Murphy taps the table with his hand. “I couldn’t go along with that, obviously.”
