Love, Dad
Travis Smalls has always had a love for vlogs. At a young age, vlogs were how Travis learned about life, the world, and himself even. As a teen, when he was questioning his gender identity, trans vloggers talking about their experiences helped Travis come to terms with his own gender. Now, years later, Travis has fully transition, and has a strong desire to be their for others, as they embark on their gender journeys. But talking to a camera, especially when you’ve yet to gain an audience, is a bit nerve-racking. Luckily, Travis’s lovely girlfriend, Samantha, has a suggestion that may make vlogging a hell of a lot easier for Travis. But when Travis and Samantha begin their journey to start their family, the purpose for Travis’s vlogs begin to shift a little.

If You Like Heartstopper, Try These:
Note: Many in this list are going to contain more mature themes than Heartstopper does, as their intended audience is older; Many contain mentions/discussions about sex, homophobia, etc. Not all of these listings are LGBT, though all explore the same or similar themes (coming out, coming of age, navigating friendships, mental health issues, etc). Most of these are things that I like; Even if you like Heartstopper, you might not enjoy these, for a variety of reasons.
Adachi and Shimamura by Hitoma Iruma: A series of Japanese light novels that follows two girls, from friends to lovers. Includes navigating friendships, a sexuality crisis, and switching POVs. There’s also an anime series. Mild sexual jokes are made, and there’s alludes to internalized homophobia.
I Cannot Reach You by Mika: A short Japanese manga series about childhood friends who are the polar opposite of each other; Also a friends to lovers. Alludes to and mentions of homophobia.
I Think Our Son is Gay: A Japanese Manga series from the point of view of a mother, who thinks her son is gay, but hasn’t come out. Casual homophobia is in the book itself, from side characters, but the mother narrating the book is very supportive.
Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu: An American comic series about gay southern vlogger/former figure skating champion going to a Massachusetts University to play ice hockey. Contains drinking, mentions of and jokes about sex, mentions of homophobia.
Spinning by Tillie Walden: An comic memoir about a young lesbian and her experiences growing up in the American Midwest, with a heavy focus on (competitive) synchronized figure skating, which she did for twelve years. Contains sexual assault, homophobia, and mental health issues.
Your Lie in April by Naoshi Arakawa: A Japanese manga series that follows a young pianist, who has since stopped playing the piano. When he meets a violinist, she changes his life. Contains an abusive parent, the death of a parent, unrequited love. Has a live action movie, an anime series, a light novel, and stage productions.
Blue Flag by KAITO: A Japanese manga series following two childhood friends, who grew apart as they got older. Contains minor themes of internalized homophobia, and themes of growing up. Friends to lovers.
TV Series/Animations:
Sk8 The Infinity, directed by  Hiroko Utsumi : LGBT themes are heavily implied throughout, for most of the main cast. A Canadian-Japanese boy and his mother move to Japan after his father dies. He finds comfort in skateboarding. Contains alludes to depression, the death of a family member, LGBT themes -- though it’s not directly stated, and only implied.
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016), written/directed by Sayo Yamamoto: A Japanese competitive figure skater meets his idol, a five-time gold medal holder, when said idol comes to coach him. Contains mild (censored) nudity (Main character’s family owns a hot springs), sexual jokes/themes.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018), written by ND Stevenson:  “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is set on the planet Etheria and follows the stories of Adora and Catra, orphans who were raised to be soldiers in the Horde. They are part of an evil army led by Hordak, a tyrannical despot who dreams of conquering the planet. One day, after getting lost in the woods, Adora finds a magic sword that transforms her into the legendary Princess of Power, She-Ra.” (Synopsis from Wikipedia). Contains a cast full of LGBT characters, themes of war and references to child abuse.

Like Real People Do
Like Real People Do
E.L. Massey
NineStar Press
August 2022
Tumblr media
Alexander Price, the NHL’s youngest captain and Elijah Rodriguez, a figure skater-slash-food vlogger with seizure disorder certainly have an inauspicious first meeting when Price takes up the only accessible parking space at the ice rink. Alex feels bad and tries to make up for it by taking Eli out for lunch. From there, these two very different guys just barely out of their teen years form a strong friendship. But Eli, disabled and flamboyantly out of the closet for years, and Alex, who is well known for his abrasive and douchey behavior on and off the ice, seem awfully different.
But when the internet gets wind of, and is delighted by, this unlikely friendship, Alex’s carefully sculpted public persona begins to crumble and eventually he realizes someone might be worth coming out of the closet for.
The cast of characters are really what makes this book so special. From Alex with his hard exterior but soft-bro inside, to Eli who’s had a lot to deal with in his young life, to Alex’s best friend on his team who’s an outspoken LGBT ally and feminist, to the goofy and lovable Russian hockey player, to Eli’s solid best childhood friend, and of course Eli’s constant companion Hawk, a seizure detecting service dog, they’re all well developed. But really, it’s the friends to lovers storyline that brings this whole thing together.
Like Real People Do is such a warm hug of a book. An LGBT-friendly love letter to hockey bros, people trying to better themselves, healthy communication and service dogs.
