Riko’s Pizza - Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, NY
Tumblr media
Paul has been telling me to check out Riko’s for months now and on a recent trip to Long Island I had the chance to stop on my way to Massapequa. I made sure to not eat a lot earlier in the day since I knew Riko’s was a pie only place so I went in hungry for some slices. I know LI likes to jack up their prices so I was pleasantly surprised to only be spending $11 on a pretty big personal pie. I was able to finish all 6 slices, but would have been more than content with 4.

I went for the hot oil pizza (Paul’s recommendation) which is Riko’s claim to fame. It’s a plain pie made with spicy oil and a stinger pepper in the middle. I had mixed feelings about the hot oil. While it did have a nice kick, it was not distributed very well, leaving some bites with no spice and others with way too much. Honestly I might have preferred a plain pie because the cheese and sauce were great! Thin crust with a nice layer of cheese and that light, unseasoned sauce that I love. I would like to return eventually to try some other items, I hear they have a dope hot oil hot dog....

                                       this one’s from Paul’s visit!

P.S. they have other locations in NY, CT, and FL, so check it out if you live in any of those areas!

In Levittown’s Shadow: Poverty in America’s Wealthiest Postwar Suburb with Author Tim Keogh ’07
Tumblr media
There is a familiar narrative about American suburbs. After 1945, white residents left cities for leafy, affluent subdivisions and the prosperity they seemed to embody. In Levittown’s Shadow tells us there’s more to this story, offering an eye-opening account of diverse, poor residents living and working in those same neighborhoods. Tim Keogh shows how public policies produced both suburban plenty and deprivation—and why ignoring suburban poverty doomed efforts to reduce inequality. Named one of the best nonfiction books of 2023 by Publishers Weekly.
Tim Keogh is assistant professor of history at Queensborough Community College, CUNY.

LECTURE 3: THE WORLD THAT GAVE US THE BEATLES (part 2): Built by the firm of Levitt & Sons between 1947 and 1951, Levittown on Long Island, New York, was the product of the same kind of mass production techniques that made the Ford Motor Company the world’s leading manufacturer of automobiles in the first half of the 20th Century. This newsreel footage spotlights the revolutionary methods used by Levitt & Sons to create entire communities where potato fields once existed. The firm’s approach was adopted by housing developers across the country as suburban growth flourished in postwar America in the 1940s and 1950s.

Headcannon as suddenly came unto me
Not many know this, but in Levittown, Pennsylvania (just outside Philadelphia, know, and one of several such developments in the post-World War II housing boom), there is actually an elementary school named for no less than Walt Disney.
And this opening in the late 1950's, besides, just as the creator of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, inter alii, was at his heighth, as if the opening of the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California wasn't already big enough.
The naming thereof, know, being on the suggestion of schoolchildren in the model development.
Which makes you wonder why we never saw at least one school named for William Hanna and/or Joseph Barbera, never mind their managing to rescue animation from near-extinction just as television was coming into its stride in the late 1950's, eventually becoming popular culture icons on the same plane as Disney was.
