Mythoscember Day 10 - Lernean Hydra

Doing this in acrylic back in 2019 took years off of my life... This was the absolute bane of my existence...

I liked the idea, I hated the execution

But now... Yeah I like this a lot! I could have done more with the fins, but I was just so glad to finally get all those heads right...

Fun fact! Each head has the eye color of the neck of the head next to it! Sure, it makes the purple and blue heads look kinda high, but it makes the red and orange heads look super cool and yes I play favorites

the hydra is a serpentine water monster. in the canonical hydra myth, the monster is killed by heracles as the second of his twelve labors. the hydra was the offspring of typhon and echidna. it had poisonous breath and blood so virulent that even its scent was deadly. the hydra possessed many heads, the exact number of which varies according to the source.

“I’ll see if Percy can convince her to stop by.” Nico promises the teenage demigods. “I’m sure she’d be willing to help.”

It’s a relief to be able to make such a statement and mean it. “It looks like Chiron wants to talk to me. Tyler, don’t forget to let Sally know if you’re joining them in Montauk this summer.”

Tyler confirms that he’ll let her know and Nico makes his way over to Chiron.

“Mr. Di Angelo, I must say this is quite the unexpected visit.” Chiron says.

“I was wondering what you know about the Lernean Hydra.” Nico says flatly.

headcanon: Satori is a Hanare Christian (Japanese Christians who went figuratively and literally underground during the Tokugawa shogunate’s prohibition on the religion, then refused to recant their wildly-mutated beliefs and rejoin mainstream Christianity when the ban was lifted). This has lead to some absolutely fascinating theological discussions with Remilia, who is what you might call “anti-Christian,” believing in the existence of the Christian God and broadly in the canon, but standing in opposition to God.

(Unfortunately Chireiden and the SDM are the only two Christian households in all of Gensokyo, so they’re kind of stuck with each other)

This has also resulted in Koishi and Flandre having some incredibly silly discussions, based in half-remembered stories they heard from their respective sisters, about such things as whether or not Jesus was justified in killing the Lernean Hydra before the very eyes of its brother Orochi and whether the lasers he shot out of his stigmata where real light-based lasers or more like energy beams.

(and in Patchouli breaking some kind of world record for aneurysm frequency)

I need to look up how Hercules died bc I cant rember if it was his second or third wife, or how many wives he had, and if the hydra blood had anything to do with the skin melting shirt, or if it was a skin melting shirt or a big bonfire. maybe it was his ex??????? needless to say, I need to refresh my mythology

I don't know if you already looked it up, but for anyone wondering,

Based off the small amount of research I did, Hercules died after being poisoned by the venom of the Lernean Hydra. He was poisoned by his fourth wife Deianira.

At least that's what I found :)
