Barudgo's The Familiar sneak peek (chapters 1-3)
... the words her aunt had taught her, "Aboltar cazal, aboltar mazal." A change of scene, a change of fortune. She sang them very softly. They were not quite Spanish, just as Luzia was not quite Spanish.
The first three chapters of The Familiar are out! I adored them – thoughts under the cut for spoilers.
The quote I put at the top of this post gave me actual chills. Leigh Bardugo looked into my eyes and said: here. I wrote this story for you.
"If a little bit of magic could make us rich, your mother would have died in a palace full of books, and I wouldn’t have had to fuck my way to this beautiful house." Aunt Hualit is the realest and I love her for it, I cannot wait to see what she gets up to
"There are worse things for a woman than being alone." loudly crying emoji
Luzia's gaze – I need to know more. What is behind it? Is that related to the magic? Or was the other woman just easily intimidated at that moment?
I love the idea of someone looking at a statue of Mary and imagining it's Ruth or Esther
The symbolism of shattering a wine goblet that was given as a wedding gift and then making it whole again – Bardugo!!!! "Changed but unchanged, perfect and ruined all the same." I may never think of stepping on the glass at a wedding the same way again

I know a lot of people especially helnik fans are upset that season 2 reduced matthias’s dreams of nina to just one similar thread of sex scenes instead of the additional dreams the book includes of matthias murdering nina, and I get it. the duality of matthias’s dreams are so integral to understanding his state of mind in the books and give such a perfect insight into who he is, his love for nina, and his attitude towards those feelings.
that being said, I think there is a good reason behind scrapping the darker dreams for the show, one primarily rooted in the change in medium. in a book, it’s harder to portray someone’s visual disgust for the things they’re thinking. a character in a circumstance as isolated as matthias’s (i.e. being in prison) makes it hard to have the character express that through verbal dialogue, and it’s not exactly easy to write and explain that sentiment in an internal monologue without it seeming a little unnatural or forced. leigh barudgo made a really smart choice in using the idea of dreams to convey that, because it’s a really easy tool to use in a book for letting symbolism do the heavy lifting.
a show, on the other hand, doesn’t necessarily need that as much. the audience can see with their own eyes the disgust on matthias’s face when he has these dreams. there’s not as heavy a need for a metaphoric representation of matthias’s disgust or of him rejecting his feelings of love for nina (because of the implications, the perceived betrayal, etc.) because those things are so visible in his face and through calahan’s performance, there for all to see and analyze. we can see the way he still holds so much anger and hatred in him in the way he gives that cold stare to nina during her first visit, how he hits the walls and struggles to accept this as his fate. we see him try to reject the love he still has for her when he almost rips pekka’s head off at the mere mention of finding satisfaction in a woman knowing he means nina. we see it in him accepting the fights to feel something different, wiping his religious symbols from the sand, in looking downright miserable and disgusted when dreaming of nina. it’s just easier to embed those emotions into tinier visual moments than in a book because television is an inherently visual medium.
so the violent dreams would have been nice (that feels like not the right word but you know what I mean) and I do wish they would have added that because it’s just such a well-known iconic part of helnik’s beginnings and I also just wish calahan had gotten more screentime, but I don’t think it’s ooc to have excluded it and I kind of understand why they did. that’s just my two cents anyway!

I'm curious to know and I thought you might have more insight. Do you know the reason why SJM has had a fallout with other authors in her genre?
I know she used to be close with Leigh Barudgo and even Susan Dennard. But they don't associate with her anymore. I don't even know if Lynette Noni is still close with her. I remember at one time they were supposed to co-author a book together, but I have heard no word of that since 2020/2021.
i mean, it's impossible to know for certain simply because we weren't in the room when those things happened. but we do know that sjm is an incredibly jealous person who views other women as inherent competition (we know this by her own admission), so my guess is that had a major part to play in it.

I just read King of Scars (I know I'm late, but grad school has kept me busy.) Leigh Barudgo really said let's chain Nikolai to the bed every night for his own protection as if the sexual tension between him and Zoya isn't thick enough already.

This is probably my favourite scene from Rule of Wolves because this imply that she said that before.
"Zoya, we’re out of cereals, what should we do?"
"Kill the Darkling."
"Wha—"
"Kill. The. Bitch."

Nikolai just grinned. "Finally," he said, "you're thinking like a politician."
I swear I spit out my tea.

SHADOW AND BONE SERIES
That bit after Alina got the collar? AMAZING.
The darkling being the villain never shone quite that much elsewhere in the series. When alina was presented to the world for the first time, she wore a black kefta. Kefta protects Grisha and all Grisha wear it. When she got the collar and was presented to the world a second time, she was wearing this fancy dress with her hair all done up and nice. No kefta. She isn't grisha anymore, and i think it represents very well that the darkling at that point saw her as his little puppet/object. Like something he owned and paraded around, no longer an individual, or a grisha that could summon light.

The most shocking thing about the shadow and bone show is that every character is either almost exactly like their book counterpart or even a slight improvement?? And I say this as someone who read all the books first, before casting, and desperately wanted the show to do the characters justice.
Whether or not they look or feel like i pictured them, they all really sold the characters. And that’s amazing. I’m on my third rewatch. Some things I was iffy about the first time around don’t bother me so much anymore and I am interested to see how they take things forward.
