Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Raj and Simran meet during a trip across Europe and end up getting stranded in the middle of nowhere after they miss their train. Despite their initial clashing, they fall in love. However, Simran’s traditional father has arranged her marriage elsewhere. Raj must win over Simran’s family to marry her, leading to a series of heartfelt moments, comedic misunderstandings, and ultimately, a dramatic climax where love conquers all as the couple fights for their happiness against societal norms.

Dick is so raj coded with his quips and charisma. Their chaotic banter and chemistry is off the charts. Any Indian who hasn’t watched this gets their desi card revoked immediately, I don’t make the rules. This movies fits Dick’s dramatic flair perfectly.

Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

The modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” set in rural Gujarat, India. It follows the love story of Ram, from the Rajadi clan and Leela, from the Sanera clan, who belong to rival gangster clans engaged in a long-standing feud. Despite the enmity between their families, Ram and Leela fall deeply in love, leading to a tragic and tumultuous journey filled with passion, violence, and sacrifice.

It fits Jason’s love for guns and classics. An absolute visual treat with cinematography and all the songs are absolute bangers.

Jab We Met (2007)

Aditya, a heartbroken business tycoon, someone who was dwelling in the lowest ebb of his life and was almost on the brink of giving it all up, aimlessly boards a train to escape his depressing life. On his journey he meets Geet, a talkative and vivacious young woman. Geet is on her way to meet her boyfriend, but her plans go awry, and she ends up stranded. Aditya, feeling sorry for her, decides to help her get to her destination safely. Along the way, they encounter various adventures and challenges that bring them closer together. Despite their contrasting personalities, they develop a deep connection. However, when they part ways, Aditya realizes his love for Geet and sets out to find her. In the end, they reunite, realizing they are meant to be together.

Grumpy x sunshine. The OG green flag. Epitome of ‘if he wanted to,he would’. Makes my chatterbox heart happy because of how much I relate to the FL. Favourite comfort movie of all time. ML kinda looks like Cillian Murphy’s scarecrow. “I like you a lot but that is my problem, you don’t need to worry about it.” Their fights and his little sassy comebacks and rants were so cute and fun to watch.

Jodhaa Akbar (2003)

The Mughal emperor Akbar, seeking to forge political alliances, marries Jodhaa, a Rajput princess. Initially a marriage of convenience, their relationship evolves as they learn to respect and love each other. Jodhaa struggles to adapt to Mughal customs, especially with their cultural and religious differences but her courage and integrity win Akbar's admiration. Despite conspiracies and opposition, including from Akbar's own court, their love prevails. The film explores the transformation of a young ruler, initially groomed for ruthlessness by his mentor Bairam Khan, into a wise and compassionate emperor who values mercy, diplomacy, religious harmony and cultural acceptance. Akbar's realization of the importance of religious tolerance, showcased through his abolition of discriminatory policies and his respect for all faiths.

The arranged marriage tag and the ‘raised as a weapon but softens and shows more compassion out of respect and love for his empress’ tag fits demonhead!Damian so much. The way he said mashallah after he pulled off her veil in the middle of a sword fight >>>>. I love how it captures the essence of India’s rich heritage and diversity. “Why seek paradise ? It is before me now.”

𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐧𝐞

Khoobsurat (2014)

Milli, a free-spirited and eccentric young woman becomes the physiotherapist for a royal family. She brings her lively yet clumsy personality into the conservative royal household, shaking up their structured lives. It clashes with the formal atmosphere of the palace, especially with the stern matriarch, Nirmala Devi. Despite initial resistance, Milli's unconventional methods bring joy and laughter into the lives of the family members, including the brooding prince, Vikram. As Milli navigates the challenges of fitting into the royal household, she also finds herself falling in love with Vikram, leading to a series of comedic and heartwarming moments.

Very cliched (well it is a Disney film) and the second hand embarrassment is unreal but sometimes after a long day all you need is a feel-good cheesy rom-com. Oh to sit next to Fawad Khan in a red convertible while gazing lovingly at him. I like how she emphasises on improving the patient’s mental health to help him heal. Incase you haven’t noticed already, cold brooding™️ x silly goose is my favourite character dynamic.

Ram leela movie part 1

Impressed by Mastani’s skills as a warrior, Bajirao helps her with his army and defeats the invaders. The diplomat then goes on to reveal herself as Mastani, the daughter of Rajput king of Chhatrasal and his Muslim consort Ruhani Begum. While traveling a diplomat from Bundelkhand requests the Peshwa to help them fight invaders. Impressed by his skills he is declared the Peshwa and then the story continues ten years later with Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra), Bajirao’s wife who is visited by her widowed friend Bhanu who predicts that just as she yearns for her husband, Kashibai will yearn for Bajirao. The film starts with Bajirao, who was asked to split a peacock feather with an arrow in order to become the Peshwa of Maratha.

Starring Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh, Bajirao Mastani is a love story set in the 18th century. Deepika Padukone And Ranveer Singh - Bajirao Mastani This film was a treat for the audience, a perfect love story filled with drama.Ģ. Rajadis and Saneras then make peace with each other and cremate Ram-Leela together. During the festival of Dussehra, Ram and Leela decide that they are each other's soulmates and shoot each other. Thinking that her mother’s condition is because of Ram she negotiates with Ram and decides to never interact with him again. Leela is then made the chieftain of the Saneras. At the event Bhavani secretly shoots Dhankor Baa leaving her injured to place the blame on the Rajadis. She invites him to celebrate Navratri with the Saneras, with the intention to kill him. Ram then requests Dhankor Baa to consider peace between the two clans. To escape all the chaos Ram and Leela decide to get married, but Leela is forcibly taken back home by her cousin Bhavani, while Ram is praised for spoiling Leela’s reputation and is made the new chieftain of the Rajadis.

Leela Sanera and Gauri Kumari Ssarma: Heroines let down by shitty script

Today was another one of those days where I just stare at the perfection that is Deepika Padukone and obsess over her songs. One of my all time favorite songs, is the Nagada song in Ram Leela. Resisting with difficulty the wish to gush over the song, I’ll get to the point. There is this small shot where Ram (played by Ranveer Singh) enters the Sanera Haveli, and Leela sees him. Leela breaking the dance for a second goes to Ram and quickly touches his feet, which Ram stops, and then she moves back to the dance. 

Though the movie was pathetic, reflecting back to this bit got me thinking. Why would Leela touch Ram’s feet? Sure they both believe that they’re married. But I didn’t figure Leela as a girl who would touch her husband’s feet, considering she’s the bolder and more assertive of the two in the relationship, and without doubt his equal. And then suddenly the bells started ringing in my head, who does this remind me of? But of course, Gauri Kumari Sharma! (Maybe I’m seeing GKS everywhere, ‘cos I’m so obsessed with her/Rikara nowadays). 

The more I thought about it, the more I saw similarities between Leela and Gauri. Sure on the surface there is nothing common between them, but the more I dug deeper, the more they seemed personality sisters to me. Let me explain. 

First of all the script of DBO/IB never allowed Gauri to be as amazing as she is and has the potential to be. Secondly, there are some obvious and heavy limitations that are imposed upon Tellywood heroines in general, and they can hardly break out of of their ‘sanskaari’ mould. Still let me attempt this character comparison.

Both Leela and Gauri have A-level badassery. While Leela’s favorite way to announce celebrations seems to be shooting, Gauri is also willing to bulldoze and stab, be it rage or in self-defense. Both are unwilling to give-up in the face of circumstances unless almost forced to do so (thanks to the godawful script). The word damsel-in-distress does not apply to them, in fact, Gauri is rather the savior of those in distress. Both have a calculative side to them, and whatever their actually nature is, can effectively be the matriarch when needed to be. Cue to when Leela was forced to become the chief of Saneras and drive a hard business bargain with Ram (her lover), while Gauri was forced to impersonate as Thakurain and confront Om (her husband). 

A huge amount of screen space was devoted to display Leela’s sexual boldness (to the point that it became the only thing shown in the first half of the movie). While I don’t need to elaborate on Leela’s sensual side, and though Gauri is not as bold as Leela in the gulaal scene, she didn’t hesitate to pluck off leaves from a flustered husband in the most sensual manner possible (who knew such a thing could be sexy). Or posing as a goddess to resurrect the dead artist in her husband ( parallel it with Leela’s sensual af dhanchi/dhuaan dance). 

However, both characters had to suffer injustice at the hands of the makers. Lets start with Leela. The first half of the film heavily focuses on the sexual attraction between Ram and Leela. To the point that it looks like there is nothing to their relationship except lust. Only after they elope from their village, does it seem that indeed they are in love, and it is not just a relationship based on sexual tension. Its only in the second half that a clearer picture emerges and we get to see different shades of Leela. 

At first, it seems annoying that why would Leela continue to love Ram, who killed her brother, who soiled her name in the community after they eloped, whose friends molested her sister-in-law, who is thought to be the conspirator behind an attempt to murder her mother, who is above all, the avowed enemy of her clan and family? (although he is guilty of none of these things and framed by others). Because, “Besharam, badtameez, khudgarz hota hai....par pyaar toh aisa hi hota hai.” Leela is ready to lose herself in love, because her trust in him is unwavering and she is rewarded for her trust because if she loses her finger, then Ram chops off his own too. Leela’s true strength emerges when she is compelled to take the reigns of her family business and clan, just like Ram. Thats when we get to see the real Leela, who is strong, shoulders her responsibilities and doesn’t run away at the prospect of a face-off with her lover, who she knows loves her equally. 

Gauri is perhaps equally insane and annoying at times. Unlike Leela who is motivated by love, Gauri is motivated by devotion. At first it was very annoying to see Gauri so devoted to a man who thought the worst of her. Her over-the-top patnidharm was the only thing that was shown in DBO. Its only when the real Gauri started breaking out, the clever, badass, bold version, that Gauri truly started to shine. Still, Gauri’s parmeshwar jaap does annoy me. But then I realized that just because she says parmeshawar doesn’t mean she isn’t Omkara’s equal, she is assertive, does as she pleases, and obedience is a word that is missing in Gauri’s dictionary when it comes to Om, toh phir kaahe ka parmeshwar?!? 

Brings me back to the scene that actually made me think of the similarities when I saw Leela touching Ram’s feet. Touching their husbands’ (however unbelievable the marriage was) feet does not mean that Leela and Gauri were not equal to Ram and Omkara. This is just a gesture which is a result of their upbringing. Yes! I abhor this feet-touching business but also I have to respect that its their choice and feminism is also about respecting people’s choices, especially when in the case of Leela and Gauri, we see two women who are devoted but not doormats. 

Like Leela who had unflinching faith in Ram, and continued to love him and face-off with her family for him, Gauri continued to forgive Omkara for misjudging her because she knew that he was under a misconception, because he is essentially a good person at heart, and because his life was always at stake. Only when Omkara refused to use his brains and trust his heart instead of his eyes, did Gauri give up and move out of his life, because thats when he no longer deserved her devotion. 

Coming to how the script did a disservice to Gauri, the excessive focus on the patnidharam without emphasizing enough that it is only because Gauri’s Shankar ji had chosen Om for her, was how the script made her look regressive. On top of that, the numerous character flips in the name of Nayi Soch like that stupid English track to become “laayak” or coming back for SP’s mandatory Diwali celebration. Ugh! 

Despite the obvious injustice done to these two characters, Leela and Gauri both shine when they are allowed to shine. Leela shines more because she reacts out of love, while with Gauri we have an unique problem. 

I mentioned in another one of my post why Rikara story is problematic. While Gauri is suited for Om, Om does not suit Gauri. Thats why we have no proper love story in Rikara, because by no logic can Gauri love Om. Thats why she is made to marry Om, and be devoted to him, because devotion and at best a sort of spousal love, is what Gauri can feel for Om. 

It doesn’t matter that Gauri says she loves Om, because it doesn’t make sense, even if I put my brain in the freezer. Omkara is a good ML but he is not suited to Gauri. Gauri is suited to someone like Ram. Someone who she can in fall in love with, someone who would love her back with equal intensity (and I don’t mean in the sexual sense). It doesn’t matter if Omkara uses big words like “ibaadat” when there are no actions to back up such declaration. Which is why Rikara story is phuski. 

Leela and Gauri have both suffered at hands of incompetent scriptwriters, but at least Leela got to love a lover worthy of her, while Gauri is saddled with Om, who is great, but cannot match up to her devotion (’cos I refuse to call it love).

Must Watch Bollywood Movies

Part I

1.) Dear Zindagi (2016)

This movie is help me see that it getting Mental health treatment is good for you, expressing your feelings really help you in the end (psychologists really need a pay raise).

Kaira, a young girl, faces problems in her relationships. She meets Dr Jehangir, who helps her resolve her issues with her parents and get a new perspective on life, which leads to her following her passion and an improvement in her love life.

2.) Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

This one gave me so much feels😭

3.) Chennai Express (2013)

Cinematography was amazing and the places they've been to Almost want you to hop on a train and tour Europe too. 🚞 🇮🇳 🌍

Raj and Simran meet during a trip across Europe and the two fall in love. However, when Raj learns that Simran is already promised to another, he follows her to India to win her and her father over.

6.) Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

This is a very colorful adaptation of Romeo & Juliet with a bollywood styled twist. (FUN FACT : The main actor & actress got married in real life). You'll understand how 🔥 their chemistry when you watch the movie.

Ram and Leela love each other but cannot stay together as their families, Rajadi and Sanera, have been at war with each other for the past 500 years. In the end, they both need to make a sacrifice.

7.)Bang Bang (2014)

I really liked this movie so frigging much it has the perfect dose of action, romance and comedy. And the OST is amazing!!!🥰

(Fun Fact : this movie is a remake of Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruises movie titled "Knight and Day").

Harleen leads a boring life with her grandmother and works as a bank receptionist. However, her life takes a sudden turn after she falls in love with Rajveer, a thief.

8.) Dilwale (2015)

Colorful, Violent ,Explosive ,& Comedy Gold , and Fast paced with some flashbacks. This movie was filmed from Bulgaria, Iceland and India You'll fall in love with the settings.

Raj and Meera fall in love, but are forced to stay away from each other as they belong to rival mafia families. Years later, they get a second chance when their siblings fall for each other.

9.) Student of the Year (2012)

Get ready for the the typical Love triangle, Gay worthy pining Enemies-to-Friends-to-Enemies-one again. The sexy shirtless scenes and all the drama that's you thought you left behind in high school but turns out....Collage is WORSE!!!

Note: My inner gay still thinks Abhi and Rohan should have ended up together, Shanaya would have been a perfect platonic friend.(Still think Abhi & her are cute tho.)

The story begins with two boys, Abhi and Rohan, who meet each other at St. Teresa's in their final year. Soon their gang of friends extends to Shanaya and her friends. The three become fast friends and it appears that nothing can separate them —until things turn upside down as Abhi and Shanaya fall for each other and the Student of the Year competition begins.

10.) Simmba (2018)

Simmba, a corrupt police officer, works for Durva, an influential smuggler. However, his life takes an unusual turn when he decides to avenge a woman who was assaulted by Durva's brothers.
