He won't even eat vegetables when Steve Harrington cooks him dinner. Right?

The ghost of Billy Hargrove leaned in the open window of Steve’s car with that trademark smirk and, honestly, Steve was kind of impressed by how detailed his own hallucination could be.
“Wanna fuc-What the shit? HARRINGTON?”
They blinked at one another for about ten seconds before Steve’s brain finally managed to fire off a thought.
“You’re real?”
Steve couldn’t stop the words from spilling out of his mouth, his own stupidity a constant echo in his empty head. Billy’s face reflected his thoughts as he yanked on the door handle until Steve reached over to hit the lock with shock-numb fingers.
“Real fucking freezing. Let me in, pencil dick.”
Or: The Pretty Woman AU literally nobody asked for.

Steve is (maybe) a little bit still in love with Nancy Wheeler and (maybe) trying to figure himself out-- between the night terrors and the babysitting and the general weirdness that is Hawkins, Indiana-- before he graduates.
Billy Hargrove fits in there somewhere (probably).

And that’s really the goddamn question, isn’t it?
He wants to know Billy. Wants to know why he is the way he is. Wants to be able to figure out what the fuck he’s thinking when he looks at Steve like that, when he touches him like it doesn’t mean shit and like it means everything all at once. Wants to know why he talks so much shit, why he needs to fight, where all that fire comes from. Why he’s so volatile, why he’s such an asshole, how he can be so fucking mean and so fucking sweet in the span of seconds, at the same time, even.

Maybe that’s why Steve said yes when Max asked him to help move boxes out of Billy’s room after the dust settled. He could hear her voice. Too many. Too heavy.
Just like his wounds. His grief. Too many. Too heavy.
(Or, Steve steals the glass ashtray from Billy's bedside table and things start to go bump in the night.)

Maxine looked happy as they parted from Steve and walked down Main Street away from the theater. She slid into the passenger seat of Billy’s car. 'That was really fun,' she said. She looked at him like a gremlin and then smiled real cutesy. 'Did you and Steve hold hands in the popcorn?'
'I hope you had a real good time, I’m going to kill you in your sleep tonight,' Billy told her.

I honestly don't know what to say about this fic. Not because it's bland but because I've read this...*checks history*... 30 TIMES OVER THE LAST 7 MONTHS. They wrote this for me as a gift in Harringrove Holiday Exchange 2022 and I've never read anything that matches what I like to read/write so perfectly as this fic does. There's pining and there's lemon and so many things going on inside the heads of the characters and and and... Mostly Harringrove with Harringroveson undertones + genderqueer Billy. It has everything I love and need and it's perfection. 💜

Billy moves in with Steve and there's only one bed. But they haven't even met. The idea is so intriguing and unique that it just drew me in immediately.
First to Burn by boltblum (76k / Harringrove)
Au where Billy moves nextdoor to Steve, and they grow up as friends. I'm bad in reading long fics bc I can't concentrate but this one kept me hooked throughout. And in the end made me sob uncontrollably.

Billy has gender issues. That right there is like catnip for me, can't help it.

Kelvin's biscuits picked up a sog by the time he's found himself back at the table, pushing his carbs for the week around his plate, avoiding looking at Daddy and too keen-eyed for his own good Martin.
Jesse yammers on about forgiveness while Amber sits eating peas by the single and Kelvin thinks about a year. About being common wed. About Intent.
His intention had been to wait until he'd hit thirty and think about asking Jesse to ask Amber about setting him up with some saint of a woman Momma would love. They'd have kids, like Jesse did. He'd have his Gemstone Picture Perfect family and do one of those photoshoots where they all wear white or something.
Except Kelvin's nearing his big milestone birthday and Keefe's been moved in for a year.
Kelvin stares at Martin and his placid expression, always the professional, always polite even when he's telling on the three of them to Daddy or informing Kelvin in the middle of Sunday Lunch that he's married.

Do you have any harringrove fic recs? I binged mtiab and now theres a giant hole in my heart that needs to be filled asap 😭
I do! Although, these recs are pretty well-known and well-rec'd, so I'm sorry if I can't point you at something new--but these are the ones that gave me the harringrove brainrot:
Causal Nexus (WIP) by drabbleswabbles. The fic that I was reading when I realised I wanted to write harringrove. The writing and pace in this is top-notch. I'm a little behind on it only because I'm a super jealous reader and catching up on it would lead me to burn my own work to the ground.
take a chance with me, it will be alright by LazyBaker. The Billy dialogue in this scratches my brain in ways I didn't know I needed it scratched. I think about certain turns of phrase in this all the time. The prose feels so absorbing and candied and violent and sticky and Billy? This fic was my only source of serotonin for like two years. I put it aside for the same reasons as above and it's complete now, so I'm saving it as my treat for when I finish my fic.
Second Thoughts by CallieB. I think this has been rec'd by people with a lot more grift than me, so I won't pretend my summary will do it justice. This is the chicken soup of character-driven harringrove, and also gives me the warm fuzzies even though I don't typically like the warm fuzzies? I remember reading this in an airport on the way to a job interview and flunking the interview because this was in my brain instead.
