Pray two rak'ahs every day. If it falls on Laylat-ul-Qadr, it's as if you prayed every day for more than a thousand months.
Recite the Quran every night. If it falls on Laylat-ul-Qadr, it's as if you recited the Quran for more than a thousand months.
Give charity every night. If it falls on Laylat-ul-Qadr, it's as if you gave charity for more than a thousand months.
Engage in lots of Dhikr every night. If it falls on Laylat-ul-Qadr, it's as if you did Dhikr for more than a thousand months.
Read Surah Ikhlaas at least three times every night. If it falls on Laylat-ul-Qadr, it's as if you read the whole Quran every night for more than a thousand months.
When Allah is accepting duas on Laylat-ul-Qadr, may yours be one of them.
I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! If I realize Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), what should I supplicate in it?" He (ﷺ) replied, "You should supplicate: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me)."
“When the race horse knows that it is nearing the end of the track it exerts all of its effort to win the race. Do not allow the race horse to be cleverer than you. Indeed, deeds are judged by their conclusions. Thus, if you didn’t do well with welcoming Ramadān then perhaps you will do better bidding it farewell.” Ibn al-Jawzī (raḥimahullāh)
“Do not look for the spiritual rewards of Laylatul Qadr between the pillars of the mosque; look for it in the contentment of a mother, a father, a brother, a sister, in maintaining ties of friendship, in feeding the poor, in bringing comfort to the fearful, in lifting the pain of the grieved, in assisting the needy...”
Mālik رحمه الله related that he had heard a person he trusted from the people of knowledge say:
“Indeed, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was shown the lifespans of the people before him or as Allāh willed in that regard. So it was as if he felt that the lifespans of his Ummah were shortened, that they would not reach the level of deeds of those before them due to the length of life.
Therefore, Allah gave him the Night of Decree, which is better than a thousand months.”
One meaning of the word 'Qadr' is 'greatness, honour or dignity'. The night of Qadr has been given this name because it is a night of greatness, honour, majesty and dignity.
Abū Bakr Warrāq رحمه لله has stated that this night is so called because a person becomes a man of honour and dignity on account of repentance, seeking pardon and righteous acts during this night whilst prior to this he might have lacked honour and dignity on account of an unrighteous life he might have led.
The greatest virtue of the night is that the acts of worship performed on this single night is better than worship in 1000 months (83 years, 4 months).
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, "He who spends the Night of Qadr in the worship of Allāh, all his past sins will be forgiven.
In another narration Allāh's Messenger ﷺ said, "All the angels resident at the Lote Tree of the Uttermost Boundry descend in the leadership of Ḥaḍrat Jibr'īl عليهم السلام and greet every believer, man or woman, except the one who takes wine or eats pork."
In a different narration by Ḥaḍrat Anas رضي الله عنه the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, "When the night of Qadr occurs, Ḥaḍrat Jibr'īl descends on the earth with a huge gathering of angels and all of them pray for every servant of Allāh, man or woman, busy in ṣalāh or dhikr, to be blessed by Allāh تعالى.
The Messenger ﷺ was asked what supplication should be made if one finds the night. The Messenger ﷺ replied,
O Allāh, Indeed You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ instructed to search for it (the night) in the odd nights of the last ten days.
[Ma'āriful Qur'ān, Volume 8]
Ibn Al-Qayyim says: "If Laylatul Qadr was a single night out of the year, I'd endeavour the whole year until I found it! What then are mere ten nights."
[Badā'i' al-Fawā'id]
"Scholars mention the wisdom behind concealing the Night of Al-Qadr is so that one may become more diligent in striving for it, and work harder in order to attain what they seek. It wouldn't have been the case if the Night was singled out..."
ramadan series: the last 10 nights (laylatul qadr)
the last 10 days of ramadan are among us in which one of the odd nights will be Laylatul Qadr - "the night of destiny is better than a thousand months" (97:4)
it is important to maximise as much of these nights as possible as: 1000 months = 83 years
1 hour is better than 9.8 years
1 minute is better than 58 days
1 second is better than 23 hours, subhanallah.
here are some tips on how to maximise Laylatul Qadr:
pray voluntary prayers every night
pray taraweeh and tahajjud every night. do not just pray on the odd nights, try and pray on all of the 10 nights to reap the full rewards
recite this du'a:
Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul afwa, fa'fu anni (O Allah, You are forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me) (narrated by Aisha RA - Sunan Ibn Majah 3850)
prepare a list of du'as you intend to make
sometimes we can forget to make specific du'as when it is time to pray so having a list that you can look at before each prayer can help
give charity and recite the Qur'an every night
good deeds are rewarded as though you have done it for 83 years
wake up your family
the Holy Prophet ﷺ would make sure that his family is awake to participate to reap the rewards too - follow the sunnah
limit distractions
get off of social media/tv/games etc and make use of the night. we do not know if we will make it to the next ramadan so maximise these 10 nights to the best of your ability and remain in worship.
dhikr and du'as outside of prayers
remain in the remembrance of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ even when your prayers and voluntary prayers are done to please Him. recite istighfar and send blessings upon the Holy Prophet ﷺ too.
