Lost in nothingness and found (a Deltarune short story)
The noises were horrible and Kris could feel something made of metal hit them followed by a lot of small objects tumbling down on them.
Susie next to them was even wilder in her persue to shield herself, at least from what they could hear coming from the purple monster's direction. Then the light switch was found and the bulb lightend to reveal the chaos they had fabricated.
Checker pieces, cards, chess pieces, everything was strawn all over the place. "The place", as they identified after a few seconds it took to find their orientation, was the old abandoned classroom. Their new friend quickly confirmed their location with a confused huff in their voice.
"Well... we should get going"
But neither of them moved as they let their eyes scan over the items, the scattered toys filling both the monster as well as the human with an undeniable pinch of nostalgic pain. Neither of them wanted to go. Neither of them wanted to let go, at least not just yet.
Funny how determindely one can persue a goal and then, once they reached it, find themselves realising how in fact the way had been the greater aim.
But now was not the time to dwell on that they decided, finally walking towards the exit in unision after what couldn't have been a whole minute but felt way longer.
But a sight in the corner of the quiet person's eye caused Kris to yet again stop in their tracks. In the mess all around them they had known that it would have been impossible to find their friends for certain, if they were even there and not, as they hoped with a desperate urge, real in the dark world, save, sound and sentient? How to know which card was Lancer in order to not accidentally pick up the King? How to know which checker piece to definetly not encounter again? And there wasn't even something remotely to Ralsei...
But the similarity in a certain toy to one of the Darkeners met was undeniable. The distinguished, purple fur, the buttons for eyes, the general fuzzy and soft look... there, under the blackboard, was the old shopkeeper.
Kris couldn't help themselves but step closer. They could feel Susie's questioning look in their back but as the monster kept quiet they figured that she had seen their object of interest as well.
Upon closer observation, kneeling infront of the plushie, the human could also see its stiches and little patches where the wool threatened to fall out. It was with no doubt Seam.
Seeing the cat filled Kris with a certain pain again, yet this time there was more than just the longing to return to this world where they seemed to belong. The encounters with the old cat came back to their mind.
His resigned personality, his talks about madness and the "state" he was in, so beyond saving, even his pondering about finding a purpose in life and how maybe the Jevil - they shuttered at the pure thought of that goblin, it filled them with stress, fear and anger at the same time as well as an undeniable curiosity - could have given him some.
Seam had barely shown any interest in the Heroes, or in anything for that mattered. He had always been friendly and helpful towards them but did neither show up with the others to overthrow the king nor say goodbye upon their parting.
And yet Kris couldn't bring themselves to just part from the plushie infront of them. Maybe it was the ever so slight twinch of self-awearness they saw in the shopkeepers personality. If one squinted their button-eyes they could see a likness between the cottonfilled darkner's and the human lightner's views.
Kris had given up for a long time before falling down. They had accepted that their world was filled with being only second best, if even, and with lonesome. And so did Seam, even though he probably didn't have any cares about being inferior to anyone as he did not yearn for power or recognition. He in general didn't have any cares and Kris had found themselves feeling the same more and more often before.
They knew they had to go. They could hear Susie shuffle uncomfortably behind them. But they just couldn't bring themselves to do it.
"And I wonder, if I hadn't been asked to lock him up... would I have found more purpose on my life...?"
Seam had helped the Heroes with informations and by selling them items. He had locked in the Jevil which means that he was powerful. He invited them to drink tea with them, even if he painted a worrying future vision for that scenario to come true. In general his pessimistic, nihilistic, almost depressive... for sure depressive attidude reached something in the humans heart. Something they couldn't let go.
Maybe...
Just maybe...
Despite the adventure they had just experienced and the not so unimportant role they had taken in it Kris would have never taken themselves as someone important. They weren't a lifechanger, heck, not even a sunshine to brighten up a day or a mood. They were barely good for anything most of the time. That was all their brother.
But maybe this time they could have an influence.
Maybe this time they could change something.
Maybe... maybe they could show the old shopkeeper that there was more. That things changed. For Kris they had changed.
Maybe a new purpose would lighten up the plush darkener's world as well.
They could hear Susie take a sharp breath as Kris picked the cat up.
"Dude... are you sure about-" "I'll bring him back with me. I want to show him something"
Susie decided to resign at that, which the human was grateful for. Instead they walked together towards the door, leaving the abandoned classroom. When they entered the school corridor they were immediatly bathed in the setting sun's light. Kris looked down at the toy in their hand and for a second the light's reflect on the button eyes looked like blinking. A tiny smile appeared on the humans lips as they followed their friend who talked about leaving as well as going back to the Darkner's world the next day, the promise they gave each other with that making both of them giddy. Then their fingers carressed the old, worn-off fluff.
Ralsei had said that it made Darkeners happy to be around Lightners. Lancer had confirmed that on the way to the castle. Kris had not liked the whole subtone of the conversation one bit and the King had reinforced their unease with talking about servitude and submission.
Kris had no interest in any of the Darkners falling prey to any monster or human who wanted to use them as a slave. But maybe, if friendship was enough... in a moment where Susie wasn't looking Kris pulled the plushie into a little hug.
Maybe then there would be one more soul next to their own not trapped in a world darker, yet darker.
