Alt-America
"Biography of X takes place in an alt-history America whose vengeful spirit will remind many readers of The Handmaid’s Tale. The main event was the Great Disunion of 1945, when a big wall went up between the relatively liberal north— where for a long time it was still legal for a “CEO to earn thousand times over their company’s entry-level salary”—and the theocratic south, a place you sense Lacey, originally from Mississippi, feels in her bones. But as a reader I must admit, for how disappointed I am by endnotes, I’m even more exhausted by alt-America. Isn’t this America enough? In Lacey’s, President Bernie Sanders gets blamed for bringing fascism in the early 1990s, trying to repair the damage done by this Trump-era novel’s Trump stand-in, a female who rouses X to fascism. Wollen, writing on this salty buffet, notes “the entirety of the civil-rights movement [gets] wiped out in a parenthetical.” An interesting choice, perhaps, for a writer from Mississippi. It’s a reminder that white American writers are better off not confronting race, and they won’t play with race the way they play with everything else. You can’t blame them. Professional white artists have been through a long 21st century being told what they can and cannot popularly do, from Kenneth Goldsmith’s ignominious “The Body of Michael Brown” to Dana Schutz’s maudlin “Open Casket” to hundreds or perhaps thousands of cancellations that didn’t merit their own New Yorker explainers or careful exegesis in Maggie Nelson’s Freedom. In Lacey’s alt-America, Bernie Sanders can cuddle up to white supremacists but Malcolm X can’t use his reparations check to buy Twitter and let his libertarian friends back on."

hello anon!! <3 sorry for a bit of a late reply, i've been out and about all day, but now that i'm home i can properly answer this ask sjdhfknjds
first of all, thank you for the love!! i started giffing back in the beginning of quarantine in 2020 because i was bored and wanted to have a new creative outlet, and since i was spending so much time on tumblr, gifmaking became that creative outlet <3 however my computer is,,, very not built for photoshop in any capacity, so i had to look for some sort of different version so i could get into my hobby.
i believe around the same time, i became mutuals with arwen @benoitblanc whose tutorials tag has basically become my holy grail in finding out about how to do ANYTHING in photopea, and her photopea giffing tutorial was what i got started with! and as i grew as a gifmaker, i saw another mutual of mine, sai @ashleysolsen, also had made a photopea giffing tutorial which is the process i use now. and if you have a mac rather than a pc, good news! ANOTHER mutual of mine, lacey @lacebird, has a photopea tutorial for mac users as well <3
with all of those tutorials and arwen's tutorial tag being mentioned, i also highly recommend looking through @usergif for anything specific you might be looking for — they have a very extensive catalogue of reblogs of resources and lots of other tutorials for basically anything you can think of, and post their own resources and tutorials sometimes as well!!
as for people who inspire me, basically every gifmaker i've ever come across LMAO but besides everyone i mentioned above, here's a very incomplete list of some gifmakers and graphics makers on tumblr that highly inspire me in many ways <3 (under a cut, because this got long, whoops) ((also also, if you'd like to look through my inspo tag on my blog, that's also there!!)

Filmed in 1978 and released the following year, Effects (1979) features Tom Savini (as both actor and special effects guru) and a collection of George A. Romero’s filmmaking friends and colleagues. Oh, yeah, the cast also includes Day of the Dead‘s Captain Rhodes, Joseph Pilato, in a lead role. Shot on a miniscule budget with an ambitious script, the feature contains a story within a story with another movie buried within. The Grue-Crew share their thoughts on all the shenanigans and then read through a hefty amount of feedback. This one has all the goods!
At the time of this writing, Effects is available to stream from Tubi, Screambox, and Arrow, as well as various PPV options. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from AGFA.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Chad, will be The Mad Butcher (1971), aka Lo strangolatore di Vienna, starring Victor Buono. Yikes!

Before Matthew was born, Lacey Sharpe grew up on the streets of Los Angeles, from there she met a man that went by Frank Williams, who was in fact a drug dealer and a crackhead himself. When she realized this, Lacey couldn’t bare the thought of her son growing up in that life, so when she found out she was pregnant, she took off, never to be seen around Los Angeles again. She came across Santa Monica and thats when she met Jason Nelson.
Of course the two started dating, she explained everything to him and he agreed to marry her. Growing up in Santa Monica, Matthew Nelson is well known for being the step son of Jason Nelson, who was a war hero. His step father owned the Sunset Garage, so Matt grew up around cars and motorcycles along with a few of his best friends. When Matt turned thirteen years old, they finally told him who his real family was but that didn’t matter to him because Jason was the only father that he ever knew.
By the time that high school hit, he was in and out of the juvenile court system and his grades weren’t that good but he knew cars inside and out. At the age of seventeen he got his first motorcycle. At that point, Matthew had a mile long criminal record and reputation to go with it, but it didn’t seem to phase him at all. Even though he wasn’t smart with school, his mother wouldn’t let him drop out as much as he wanted, she just wouldn’t let him and whatever Lacey said went without question. Matthew graduated at the low of his class, he wasn’t book smart but he was street smart and everyone knew this. Knowing everything that he needed to know about repairing cars from experience.
During one of his runs with illegal parts he got ran off the road, crashing his bike of course he had go to the hospital and thats when he ran into Kelly. She fixed him up and he asked her out, to his surprise she agreed. They went on one date before he was arrested and sent to jail. Everyone went to jail for about four weeks, they served their time but Jason died in prison. Once he got out, he contacted Kelly again and explained what happened to his surprise she seemed okay and chill with it, Matthew started working on cars after he got the garage from his step father’s will when the man died.
Everything was going good, until he got trouble, he ended up going to jail once again but this time it was for having illegal parts in his warehouse. This time he got several months, Kelly ended sending him a letter, stating that she was leaving him and not to come looking for her. Naturally he honored her wishes but felt like he couldn't be in Santa Monica anymore especially when he got out of prison.
Making the decision at twenty years old, he packed up and moved to Virgin River. Opening up his own garage, because well he had the money to do so along with getting a home for himself, he also decided to open up a motorcycle charter in Virgin River, and becoming the leader of it. But this time he was going to do things right, do legal business, not just illegal. At the age of thirty five, he met Jessica Stevenson, the two became something serious quickly even if she was addicted to drugs, Matthew still loved her.
When she became pregnant, he did her best to get her off the drugs but he failed, she tried to kill their baby before he was even born by sticking a needle into her arm. When his son was born premature thanks to the drugs, Matthew knew that was the best day of his life even if he was thirty at the time, he felt like he had everything that he had ever wanted. Couple years went by and they tried to be a family, hell Jessica even announced that she was pregnant again. the pregnancy went easy enough and Jessica was actually off the drugs. Matt thought everything was going well even after his daughter was born. But he had been wrong, lJessica just left without so much as a goodbye, apart of him cared and the other didn’t.
Matthew made the decision to raise his son on his own, he swore not to do any serious relationships because he didn't want to hurt his son or have him get attached to someone that isn't going to stick around. So now he is just living his life, doing his best to try and stay out of trouble and raising his son and running his motorcycle club.

The Douai Martyrs is a name applied by the Catholic Church to 158 Catholic priests trained in the English College at Douai, France, who were executed by the English state between 1577 and 1680.[2]
History
Having completed their training at Douai, many returned to England and Wales with the intent to minister to the Catholic population. Under the Jesuits, etc. Act 1584 the presence of a priest within the realm was considered high treason. Missionaries from Douai were looked upon as a papal agents intent on overthrowing the queen. Many were arrested under charges of treason and conspiracy, resulting in torture and execution. In total, 158 members of Douai College were martyred between the years 1577 and 1680.[1] The first was Cuthbert Mayne, executed at Launceston, Cornwall on the 29 November 1577. [3] The last was Thomas Thwing, hanged, drawn, and quartered at York in October 1680.[4] Each time the news of another execution reached the College, a Solemn Mass of thanksgiving was sung.
Many people risked their lives during this period by assisting them, which was also prohibited under the Act. A number of the "seminary priests" from Douai were executed at a three-sided gallows at Tyburn near the present-day Marble Arch. A plaque to the "Catholic martyrs" executed at Tyburn in the period 1535 - 1681 is located at 8 Hyde Park Place, the site of Tyburn convent.[5]
They were beatified between 1886, 1929 and 1987, and only 20 were canonized in 1970. Today, British Catholic dioceses celebrate their feast day on 29 October.[1]
