Rengoku Kyoujurou x Fem!Reader

Word count: 1,877

Summary: Having had a rough time at work, you get some much needed love and pampering from your boyfriend.

Genre: Modern!AU, very light angst in the beginning, domestic fluff, romance

Warnings: Swearing, mentions of food and eating, pet names (Kyoujurou calls the reader (my) love)

You sat still in your seat, hands in your lap as you silently watched the last few raindrops run down your windshield. The weather perfectly mimicked how you felt inside. Gray. Dreary. Faded. You desperately needed a break from your daily life.

Letting out a sigh, you finally pushed the car door open. You had no idea how long you’d been sitting there. Hell, you barely had any memory of your commute home. So many things seemed to happen without your full attention these days. At least you could look forward to a calm evening with your boyfriend and cat. Spending time with them seemed to be the only fragment of color in your life for the past couple of months.

It was a struggle just to get your key in the lock of the front door. You missed it entirely on your first try. The second try went only a smidge better, you hit the keyhole alright, but the key wouldn’t fit. Looking down at it, you realized that you still had your car key in your hand. Thumping your head against the door, you groaned. You just wanted the day to end.

The lock clicked as it was opened from inside. You didn’t react fast enough as the door swung inwards and ended up tumbling into your apartment; right into the arms of your boyfriend. Kyoujurou immediately seemed to sense your complete lack of energy. He pulled you closer, one hand rubbing your shoulder as he pressed a kiss to the top of your head.

“Rough day?”

You just nodded against his chest, fingers digging into his shirt as you heard the door click shut behind you.

Kyouojurou let out a sympathetic hum, the sound vibrating against your nose. “Do you want to talk about it?”

You sighed. “It’s just the same old shit.”

The words came out muffled. You could almost sense the smile on Kyoujurou’s face as he asked, “What was that, my love?”

Shifting to free your mouth, you repeated yourself. “We need more people,” you continued, “but the owners refuse to acknowledge that. And no one seems to care about the safety issues except me. I don’t know how much longer I can keep it up.”

Inching back, Kyoujurou hooked his index finger under your chin, raising your face to make you look at him. When you met his amber eyes, he smiled at you.

“You’re so strong, my love. The way you keep fighting is to be admired! But--” He halted, eyes flicking away from yours for a moment, as if he expected to find the right words printed on the wall behind you. Then he met your eyes again. “I know you’re not one to stop fighting, but I’m worried about you! You’ve barely had any excess energy recently. I fear that you’ll collapse one of these days!!”

Returning his smile, you said. “You don’t have to worry about me, Kyou.”

His eyebrows knitted together. “But I do worry! And I’ve been thinking about something.”

You peered up at him. “About what?”

Reaching out, he gently ran the pad of his thumb over your cheek. “If you want to quit and look for a better job, then I wouldn’t mind shouldering our expenses for a few months.”

You shook your head. “That’s not fair to you, Kyou, I can pay for my own--”

He interrupted you. “We’re a team, aren’t we?”

“Well, yeah. Of course we are, but--”

“And you’ve supported me in the past, right?”

You nodded, thinking back to the time you had handled the majority of your expenses while Kyoujurou focused on finishing his studies.

“So,” he continued, “I think it’s my time to support you! And I’d rather do it now, before you collapse from stress!”

You stared silently at him for a moment, trying to think of a response. Kyoujurou, who always seemed to know when you were at a loss for words, pressed a kiss to the crease between your brows.

“You don’t have to decide tonight,” he said, “you’ve already had a hard day. Just think about it.”

Nodding slowly, you then sank back against his chest. The tender moment was interrupted by a thump from your bedroom followed by a series of sleepy meows. Your cat appeared, his purposeful stride towards you briefly interrupted by a languid stretch. Reaching the two of you, he began circling your legs, rubbing up against them and purring like a tiny engine.

Kyoujurou grinned. “I think Honey missed you, he’d been agitated all morning. Then he fell asleep on your side of the bed.”

Bending over, you picked up the cream-colored cat, cradling him in your arms. Kyoujurou reached out, scratching the top of Honey’s head which was met with a happy chirp. Then the cat started to wiggle. When you let him back down, he instantly started towards his food bowl.

You leaned up against Kyoujurou again, a tired sigh leaving your lips.

“I need to get dinner started.”

“Why don’t we order takeout?” Kyoujurou offered. “My treat!”

You drew in a deep breath, getting ready to argue about still being able to pay your own way. Kyoujurou picked up on it instantly.

“Won’t you let me pamper you a bit tonight?” he asked.

You felt yourself deflate again. If he wanted to treat you to takeout after you’d had a rough day, then wouldn’t it be easier to let him? To just accept the help he offered to give?

“We have veggies that need to be eaten,” you tried feebly.

“They’ll last another day,” he said. “Let me order something for us while you go take a shower and put some comfy clothes on.”

Clothes. The word dragged another tired groan from you.

“I gotta do laundry, I’m nearly out of clean clothes.” The last thing you wanted to do tonight was multiple loads of laundry, but you couldn’t see a way out of it.

Kyoujurou hummed softly. “I did your laundry earlier.”

You pushed back to look at him, a smile finally breaking out on your face. “Really? You did?”

He grinned at you. “I was doing my own, so I thought I might as well do yours while I was at it! Oh, and I washed the sheets and towels, too! Honey helped me put the sheets back on.”

Pressing your face against his chest again, you wrapped your arms tightly around him. “Thanks, Kyou, you’re the best!”

You could feel his smile as he pressed his lips against the top of your head. “Anything for you, my love. Now,” Stepping away from you, he spun you around and gave you a gentle push towards the bathroom. “Go take that shower! Or I can wait a bit on the food if you’d rather have a bath.”

“A bath sounds great right now,” you said as you started towards the bathroom, “but I’m too tired, I’ll just end up falling asleep.”

“Well,” Kyoujurou said as he followed you, “if you want a bath, then I’ll come along and keep you awake!”

Closing your eyes, you sank deeper into the warm water, letting the heat seep into your tired bones. Soft music flowed from the little bluetooth speaker, filling the silence. Kyoujurou had spent a while telling you about how he had occupied himself on his day off, getting a lot of the chores around your home done so the two of you could spend the evening just relaxing. You had zoned out at some point, and you weren’t fully sure when he had stopped talking.

Kyoujurou’s fingers gently brushed against your cheek and you opened your eyes again, looking at him. He sat cross-legged on the floor, one arm on the edge of the tub, head resting against it, his other arm stretched out to touch you.

“Don’t fall asleep,” he said, “not until you’ve had something to eat.”

You sighed as you leaned into his touch, your own hand rising from the water to cup the back of Kyoujurou’s. “It’s difficult not to, I feel more relaxed than I have in a while.”

Fingers curling around yours, Kyoujurou brought your hand to his lips. You couldn’t stop the bout of giggles when his face twisted into a grimace. While drawing you a bath, he had insisted on using one of the bath bombs he’d given you a while ago, with a promise to scrub the tub the next day. It seemed that the bath bomb didn’t make the droplets of water on your skin taste particularly good.

He beamed at you through the grimace. “It’s so nice to hear you laugh again!”

You returned his smile.

Sitting in silence for a while, your fingers intertwined with his in the water, you spoke up. “Y’know, earlier today, I thought that my life has seemed colorless for a while…”

Kyoujurou hummed in sympathy. “What can I do to help you, love?”

You gently squeezed his fingers. “Well, that’s just it! You are one of the few things that make my life a bit more colorful. I…” Looking away, you slowly continued, “I know I haven’t been easy to be around lately.”

Kyoujurou sat up straight. “Don’t start blaming yourself…”

“I’m not,” you said, “I’m just acknowledging how things have been.”

Pulling his hand from yours, he reached out again to run his fingers over your cheek, his brows furrowed. “I doubt I would be able to tolerate myself if I was nothing but some fair-weather boyfriend who gives up on you as soon as life gets tough!” Expression softening, he continued, “I’m not going to stop loving you just because you’re going through a hard time. You know that, right?”

You nodded silently, trying to fight the tears which threatened to fall.

Getting to his knees, Kyoujurou leaned closer. “If I can brighten your life just a little bit, then I’m more than happy to do that!!”

Leaning forward, you pressed your lips against his. Kyoujurou returned the gentle kiss, his fingers moving from your cheek to the back of your neck to support you.

Breaking the kiss, he then pressed his forehead against yours. “I love you so much!” he said. “I couldn’t imagine a life without you!”

“I know,” you whispered. “And I love you, too.”

Kyoujurou insisted on watching your favorite TV show while eating; the one show that you kept returning to when your brain was too tired to take in anything new and unfamiliar. He also had the foresight to insist that you’d both get ready for bed right after dinner. And sure enough, once you moved to your bed to continue the show while cuddling, Honey nestled in the small gap between the two of you and purring to his little heart’s content, you were out like a light.

Kyoujurou stayed awake for a while longer, regularly pressing a kiss to the top of your head, along with a whispered reiteration of his promise to stay with you no matter how hard life became. And every time he did so, a soft smile spread across your lips and you hugged him closer in your sleep. You knew at the core of your being that he would always be there to make your life a little more colorful.

Demon Slayer, Avatar the last Airbender - crossover

Rengoku Kyôjurô grew up with conflicting feelings about being a Fire Nation citizen. The Nation had a heavy philosophy it impressed upon everybody starting before their first school year. It was about being the greatest Nation on earth and helping others to achieve the same prosperity, the same wealth and the same outlook on life… even if you had to resort to destroying elite institutions and governments that held the regular people back. His mother though, as well as his father, always told him that war was wrong and that it destroyed lives before bettering them in any way.

His mother’s message was toned down while he was younger, of course, your family would pay dearly if your children mindlessly retold anti-war sentiments. But still, they stuck long after her passing even though his father in his current drunken state was anything but an anti-war proponent.

Kyôjurô’s father had given up on his military carrier after his wife dies. He had no will anymore to pursue his “change from the inside” philosophy. The only thing he saw himself able to do to honour his wife was to quit being a soldier altogether but nothing more. So now, he sat at home on his porch and drank all day long. However, Kyôjurô wanted to be different from him, he wanted to do his mother’s wishes justice.

So, after completing his official firebender training with high praises, he visited his father and his younger brother at their home. Senjurô was not gifted with the ability to firebend, which depressed him greatly but Kyôjurô tried to make him change his outlook on life, like their mother would have done, to convince Senjurô that he always has the choice to be whomever he wanted in life. He bid his father goodbye and left them a letter that they should read in three days’ time.

Kyôjurô had made up his mind. Between what the Fire Nation preached and what his mother told him he choose the teachings of his mother before ever setting foot n the Earth Kingdom and looking for himself what the war was really achieving. There was absolutely no reason to distrust her wisdom. She told him to use his strength for the good of the people and to protect the weak and that was what he was going to do. By committing treason against the Fire Nation.

In his letter to his father and brother, he urged them to disown and demonize him after his betrayal, just so they wouldn’t become victims of the military because of his own choices. The Rengoku name, widely known in the capital from even before the war started, should help with this.

Kyôjurô’s own path forward was pretty simple according to him. Too simple even. He was just going to the Earth Kingdom and then he was going to find The Deserter Jeong Jeong and then he would join ranks with him and together they would end the war. Nothing easier than that, really.

Except, Jeong Jeong’s whereabouts were unknown (obviously), the Earth Kingdom was bigger than anticipated (a look at a map would have helped), Kyôjurô was constantly getting lost (owning a map was also crucial) and he was constantly chased by Fire Nation soldiers as well as mercenaries who wanted the bounty on his head. People from the Earth Kingdom also disliked him greatly which he owed to the fact that he answered with nothing but the truth when someone asked him who he was and where he came from. He even showed a little flame to the terrified curious people around him as proof.

He was under the notion that he was the one Fire Nation saviour to liberate the citizens of the Earth and Water Nations. He also imagined that his willingness to say no to the Fire Nation military and the Fire Lord would be met with the cheers and crying faces of the Earth population. Both these things were violently beaten down when he actually met the people he wanted to save. But Kyôjurô learned quickly and changed his attitude.

He met many different people while trying to reach his goal. Even the descendent of the Air Nomads, the murdering terrorist known as the White Death, was among them. The guy tried to decapitate him! Kyôjurô fought back until someone from a secret society stopped their fight. Exciting times!

Just one or two years after his flight from the Fire Nation, strange but prophetic dreams started plaguing him. Agni send him a message as he later found out, and he tried to follow that message. It led him back in the direction of the Fire Nation but to the southern parts of it. He reached an island, the last one that was properly populated this far in the south, at sunrise with the rays of the sun guiding him to where he had to go.

It was an ugly side that greeted him. A family, killed by firebenders. It happened not too long ago, just last night at the look of things. He was too late to save them. Could he have been fast enough if he had still lived in the Fire Nation? Or if he had managed to understand his dreams earlier?

He buried them, at a loss of what else to do. The more south the Nation went the less they cremated their dead. Feeling ashamed about how his (former) fellow comrades killed their own brethren, even small children, he put the utmost care into the process. The villagers should have been informed but Kyôjurô didn’t dare to go down there. He learned his lessons about revealing his true identity, besides, Agni still send him to this island, to this house, even though the residents had already been killed.

He still had work to do for the sun spirit so he arranged the last flowers on the graves and left the island in search for his mission.

A show with a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries, serial, or limited series. A one-time show may be called a special.
