did anyone actually have ‘kink related pronouns’ in 2020 or was that some more shit people made up to get mad at. baffling, really.

#remember having a convo about my brother once (when he was still leaving his transmed phase meanwhile i was like knee deep into trender #positive tumblr and genderfreak shit in 2018)#and like he was finally coming around to neopronouns but said he’d never call someone anything ‘sex related’ and i was like. sorry what #i think he saw it on tiktok or something but he seemed to think that sometimes people used neopronouns as a kink #and its like. i mean you can use any pronouns as a kink. theres whole fetishes about misgendering and force gendering. but like also #sometimes a bitch wants to be called kittenself and its not a sex thing at all. like i dont agree that this is a widespread issue with #neopronoun users but if it was i honestly would find it more interesting than offputting #i dont rlly care WHY someone is using a pronoun set im gonna use it yknow?

"Doesn't that ever get confusing?" The client asked instead, still holding the large box of crying kittens they'd found on the side of the road.

Kit was used to this, and smiled slightly, holding the first of the kittens to be getting an exam. It's fur was extremely thick and soft and if kit didn't already have three cats at home, kit would have adopted it in a second. As it was, kit was resisting the temptation like a champ. "Not really," kit said, instead of cooing over the kitten, "Context is key, and its usually pretty obvious if someone's talking about me or one of the cats. Like, if someone was directing someone to me, they'd say 'kit went to the front office, you should be able to find kitten in the reception area.' And if someone were looking for the kittens, they'd say, 'The kittens are in the back area, you can find them in the room with the paper cat on the door'. Like I said, context is key. There's a pretty noticeable difference between talking about kittens and using my pronouns."

The client frowned thoughtfully. "No, I guess that does make sense." They paused, then added, belatedly, "My pronouns are she/her. I'm a woman. And my name's Janice, but you probably already read that on the appointment form."

Kit had read the form, but hadn't been able to remember her name, so that was helpful.

"Nice to meet you, Janice. And thank you again for bringing these kittens in to see us. This first one seems to be fine, all things considered."

"Oh, well thank gods for that." Janice said, "I was hoping they'd be alright. That one, I've been calling him Sunflower." She shrugged. "I know, I know, you're not supposed to name them, but they're all just so cute I had to."

Kit smiled again, wider this time. "I know the feeling." Kit said, picking up Sunflower and walking around the table to put him back in the box with his siblings, then picking out the next one.

"That's Cloud." Janice said as kit walked back around the examination table. There seemed to be a theme here.

Several hours later, kit was walking home, carrying, of course, a cat carrier. Because kitten just couldn't help kittenself. Sunflower was too cute, and he needed a foster family since the shelter couldn't take in all seven kittens at the same time. Kit was taking Sunflower, Janice was keeping two of them, and a few other friends at work were taking the others.

Maybe someday kit would be able to resist the adorable charms of a tiny, fluffy kitten, but today was not that day.

#very long vent below. btw #i know i like to joke about living in florida but this shit sucks #it seems every five fucking minutes theres a new anti-trans bill coming out #its practically impossible to legally get on hormones or even hormone blockers #gender therapy is so fucking hard to find and insurance doesnt cover the cost of any of it #teachers and doctors both are required to report transgender kids to cps. how fucked up is that #its fucking up my mental health too #ive tried speaking to my father about it and he just doesnt fucking get it. he doesnt even think of it as an inconvenience.#ive genuinely considered suicide as an option. i cannot live here any longer i just cant.#and i dont think i can survive another year.#i dont know why thats so hard for them to understand. and i dont know how to explain it in a way that they'll understand #i spoke to my therapist about this and all she said was basically that she cant help me. im so fucking tired #why couldnt i have just been cis?????#im tired of all the fucking trans discourse i hear like girl there are people actually dying out here. people going by kittenself pronouns-#is the least of our worries

There is something inherently ridiculous about someone who objects to using neopronouns while saying the word neopronoun itself. I'm sure I don't need to describe the sort of guy, everyone's met at least one, you tell them your pronouns are fae/faer or xe/xim or whatever other neopronoun you want. Or maybe you just use it/its and people say that's a neopronoun even though it's... it's not. it/its is just a pre-existing pronoun, we've been using it for 10 centuries minimum, that is a paleopronoun.

Regardless. You meet the guy. And you're probably gonna talk to them again, you figure it's worth correcting the dude when they say he or she or any other incorrect word you care to correct, and you tell them your pronouns.

And they say some version of "I don't use neopronouns" or "I don't get neopronouns" or whatever other version of that sentence you've heard. And their justification is always the same. "Neopronouns are too new" and maybe they'll further justify that by insulting their own intelligence, calling themselves old and that they simply can't wrap their heads around the usage of such new terminology.

But like, here's the thing. They said neopronoun all on their own. YOU didn't say neopronoun, they brought that word up without assistance. And do you wanna know what word is roughly as old as kitten/kittenself or doll/dollself?

Neopronoun.

Because, like, no one was just sitting around being like "Damn we have this neopronoun word here and NOTHING to describe with it" no we invented neopronouns and then we needed a word to describe that particular category of pronoun.

So no, neopronouns aren't too new for you to wrap your head around, because even without bringing in all sorts of neologisms from a similar time frame that haven't been mentioned and are still probably understood - things like dab or pog or based or doggo - they've already used neopronoun in a sentence correctly. And THAT is a neologism itself.

So I do not believe you when you say that neopronouns are too new for you. You have already contradicted yourself. Your hang up is respecting me.

I think instead of saying "it's not a phase" and we should be saying "so what if it is"

If something is a phase (and tbh human lives are a series of phases. I've certainly had a number of them) it will end naturally and in its own time especially if it is indulged and if it's not a phase it will stick around

Phases aren't bad things. They are just part of experiencing life. I've had a dragon kid phase, a "I'm not like other girls" phase, a "girly" phase, a proto emo phase. That period of time when I was obsessed with 60s folk music... And that just the ones off the top of my head. these "phases" helped build me into who I am today. They weren't bad things

How someone identifies even if it is a phase does not hurt others

No not even if they use neopronouns

And I know some people will come onto this post and say shit like "teens calling themselves dollself makes us real trans people look like a joke!"

There will never be an acceptable type of trans person to the people who hate us especially not by bowing to their rules

We can fold ourselves into caricatures of ourselves that fit in their neat little boxes and it still won't be enough to be acceptable by their standards

They don't see trans people as freaks because a kid says their pronouns are "kitten/kittenself" they see us that way no matter what we do

(and plenty of adults have neo pronouns don't forget)

So just fucking let people be and support them! And if in a couple of years they go "oops I wasn't quite right" support them then as well!

And for any transphobes who find this:

2. I often hear transphobes say shit like "what if your 4 year old said they were a unicorn! You wouldn't support that would you?" YES YOU DO IF YOU ARENT SOULESS

If your 4 year old says they are a unicorn you ask what colour because THATS HOW YOU INTERACT WITH LITTLE KIDS YOU FUCKING MONSTER

Anyway gender is complex, the human search for identity is beautiful, phases are a natural part of development and leave people the fuck alone
