I loved the whole idea of her backstory getting the fairytale treatment. A Black princess, Cinderella-type origin story. And it being narrated just as hood as possible was perfect. It was a nice, welcoming and unexpected spin.
But it also gave the raw reality of her fairytale story — filled with the issues that a dark skin Black girl faces in society. Faced from the schoolyard, to home. Colorism was the antagonist for her. Colorism was her villain. And that nemesis really altered and dictated every plan she had for her life. Continues to too. Another antagonist was the abandonment of her present father.
What was interesting is the title of the episode is called White Knights, yet the white man who she thought could be her savior wasn't. He seemed to have been her knight but became her nightmare. No one really was her knight.
It was a hauntingly beautiful storytelling that just had me passing in and out of a range of emotions.
Shannon Thornton gave her entire all in this episode. She really poured her heart out.
