I originally wrote this post on another social media platform, but it’s a topic that others debate me on constantly, so I feel the need to rant about it here as well.

I’ve seen a lot of confusion surrounding the girls’ ages in Tokyo Mew Mew, which is mostly because a lot of dubs have changed their ages for various reasons, but there is also confusion because of how different the Japanese school system is from other countries, so I thought I’d provide some information on the subject. The Japanese school year typically starts in April (usually in the middle). Kids can start Kindergarten (which is separate from elementary) as long as they are 5 by the 1st of April. Elementary starts with 1st grade and goes up to 6th grade. Next is Junior High which consists of 7th, 8th and 9th grade (they are referred to as first year, second year, and third year respectively). High School is 10th, 11th, and 12th grade (they are also referred to as first year, second year, and third year).

Now for as this relates to our mew mews’ ages: it is mostly assumed that the series starts at the beginning of the school year, based on the fact that Ichigo is wearing her “winter uniform” for the first eleven episodes, and then she switches to her “summer uniform.” Ichigo is a first year junior high student; this means she is 12 at the beginning of the school year (April), and because her birthday is in March, she does not turn 13 until the end of the school year, which is where the series ends (as she is in her winter uniform again). Minto is also a first year junior high student, making her 12 at the beginning of the series, however, her birthday is in October, so she would be 13 for the later half of the series (which also means she is older than Ichigo). Retasu is a second year junior high student, making her 13 at the beginning of the school year; her birthday is the 29th of April, which means she turns 14 almost immediately (making her almost two years older than Ichigo). Bu-Ling is a sixth year elementary school student, making her 11; her birthday is in August, so she is 12 for a good chunk of the series (this also means she was born the same year as Ichigo). Zakuro is a third year junior high student, starting the series at 14; her birthday is in September, making her 15 for the later half.

Now boys’ ages can be a little tricky as they do not have official birthdays (except Tasuku). Aoyama is the same grade as Ichigo, so he is 12 at the start of the school year, but when he ages up to 13 is not known. Ryou is a first year high school student, which means he is 15 at the start of the school year, but would turn 16 at some point. Keiichiro’s age is actually officially given, and he is 21 (but again, with the series spanning over an entire year, he would turn 22 at some point). We can probably make some guesses as to when their birthdays are based on their personalities; a lot of Anime/Manga characters have personalities that coincide with their astrological signs, and given that the girls all fit their signs fairly well, it’s probably safe to say the boys would too. Given this information, I would say Keiichiro is Aquarius, making his birthday between January 20th and February 18th, Ryou would probably be a gemeni, making his birthday between May 21st and June 20th, and while he probably doesn’t even have a “birth” day, Aoyama is most likely a Cancer (June 21st-July 22nd). EDIT: I originally wrote this prior to the announcement of Aoyama’s official birthday; Aoyama’s birthday is May 22nd, making him a Gemini (which is also fitting given his alter ego), and his birthday would be early on in the school year, so he is 13 for the majority of the original series. EDIT #2: I would just like to say, I was totally RIGHT about Ryou being a Gemini!!!! (Never mind that I was wrong about Keiichiro being an Aquarius XD). In regards to this post, and for reference, Ryou’s official birthday is June 5th (Gemini, as I already stated), making him 15 at the start of the series, and turning 16 in the summer; Keiichiro’s official birthday is November 12th, making him 21 for the first half of the series, and then 22 for the second half. I also find it very interesting that Aoyama and Ryou have the same sign. 👀

Berry and Tasuku are first year junior high students in A La Mode, which takes place a year later, starting in April. Berry’s birthday is in January, so she is 12 for the entirety of A La Mode (this also makes her the youngest Mew Mew). Tasuku’s birthday is in July, meaning he is older than Berry by six months (although, the events of A La Mode don’t seem to last very long as the girls all wear their winter uniforms for the entirety).

Now for the question that keeps popping up: how old are they in the new 2020 Return? As I said, A La Mode is exactly a year after the first series starts, so it would probably be safe to assume that Return is at least a year after A La Mode, which would make their ages as follows:

Ichigo 14

Minto 14, possibly 15

Retasu possibly 15, but more likely 16

Bu-Ling 13, possibly 14

Zakuro 16, possibly 17

Berry 13

Ryou 17, possibly 18

Keiichiro 23, possibly 24

Aoyama possibly 14, but more likely 15

Tasuku 13, possibly 14.

Once, in an attempt to not stand out as much when he and Keiichiro moved back to Tokyo, he dyed his hair black. Keiichiro told him not to but Ryou being Ryou, did it anyway. Absolutely hated it and washed it out within a week. Keiichiro patiently helped him do both, but on the latter he quite kindly refrained from saying 'I told you so'.
