Had a diptych ft. my Pokemon OC Kazuo (N's ancestor) for a while, started it last year and got put on hold until a few months later, and then I finally get around to rendering Part One. (and I also slightly updated his design since I wasn't happy with the colors) Part Two will come as soon as I get a couple other pieces done!

(also I really need to pick up PLA again, I wanna get an Umbreon and name it Kurt for hyperfixation reasons)

MayBlade Day 1

Day 1 Prompt: The Past —————

“Ah, Kazuo Mahinay, right?” Kazuo startled at the voice, glancing up from his book to find that the speaker was a boy, probably his age, with thin glasses and somewhat spiky black hair, one yellow strand sticking up in the front like a tiny lightning bolt. The other boy smiled when he was noticed, holding his hand out. “Daidoji Okami, we’re in Chemistry together?” “Oh!” right, that was why he was familiar- “Right,” Kazuo smiled back and stood, taking his hand to shake it, “you sit in front of me, your hair distracts me during lectures!”

A beat of silence. Daidoji raised a thin eyebrow, seeming like he was holding back laughter. “...I said that part out loud, didn’t I?” He felt heat flood his cheeks, started stammering out an apology, but Daidoji cut him off with a laugh and a shake of his head. “Not to worry- it is rather striking, isn’t it?” he smiled again, this one noticeably more genuine than his first. “Besides, I certainly can’t complain that I’ve caught your attention before.” Now that had him blushing for an entirely different reason, and all Kazuo could do was grin back and hope he didn’t look too strange. “U-uh, well, that- that’s good, then! Um-” he glanced down at his book, then back up, tilting his head, “Did, um, do you want to sit down?” The other moved as a response, pulling out a chair and sitting across from him, lacing his fingers together and resting his chin on them so he could watch Kazuo, that smile still on his face. “So tell me about yourself, Kazuo- what’s that book you’re reading?” His own grin widened automatically, and he nearly knocked his chair over in his haste to sit back down. “It’s for my Oceanography class! I mean, well, I’ve actually read it before, but that’s why I’m reading it now, making sure I’m not misremembering anything, y’know? Hang on, I’ll go back to the start, it makes more sense that way-” ————— “Usually, anybody outside my major would get bored of hearing about the ocean pretty quickly- but he never stopped me, never interrupted or changed the subject. He would always just sit there and listen, even asking questions sometimes, always urging me to keep going. Always just- smiling in this way that made me want to keep talking just to see it for longer…" ————— “Hey, Kaz?” Doji spoke up for the first time in a couple hours, peering down at Kazuo from where he was laying on his bed. “Mm-hm?” he answered distractedly, not looking up from his book, “yeah, what’s up?” He faintly heard Doji huff above him, and Kazuo had about three seconds to consider looking up before a pillow hit him square in the back of the head, making his face slam into his book. “Wh- hey!” He half sat up, frowning at his friend and rubbing his nose. “What was that for?” “Sorry,” Doji apologized with another one of those grins, unknowingly sending another rush of butterflies through Kazuo’s stomach. “But I know how you are when you’re reading about sea creatures, and I wanted to make sure you were actually listening.” And really, he couldn’t stay mad at Doji when he looked at him like that, so Kazuo just rolled his eyes and sat up fully, taking care not to hit the other when he tossed the pillow back up. “Well, you’ve got my attention now, so what is it?” Doji glanced away, and it was only then that he noticed his friend seemed tense, and his smile faded quickly, leaving a few moments of silence before he spoke again. “I… I know we haven’t known each other for long, so I may be out of line in asking this…” He trailed off, biting his lip as if nervous, and Kazuo got up off the floor so he could join him on the bed, giving him what he hoped was an encouraging smile. “Hey, it’s okay, you can talk to me. Is something wrong?” “Well…” Doji still seemed hesitant, but after another moment he looked over at him, a hopeful little smile curving his lips. “Could you… Apply for roommate reassignment with me?” Whatever he’d been expecting, that wasn’t it, and he was sure his surprise showed on his face as he blinked. “Huh? Uh- why?” “I’ve talked about my roommate before, he’s a party animal, usually comes back drunk and hanging all over me unless I’m locked in my room,” Doji started with a sigh, picking at a loose thread in his blanket, “well, lately he’s been coming back high on something, and if I’m not locked in my room when he does, he starts trying to attack me.” “What!?”

Kazuo grabbed for Doji’s hand unthinkingly, squeezing it gently as he looked him over for any injuries. “Attack you- are you okay? Hurt anywhere? I have a first aid kit under my bed if you need it-” Doji stared at him, eyes wide behind his glasses as they flicked between Kazuo’s face and their clasped hands. “...Um, no,” he finally responded, cutting off Kazuo’s worried rambling, “I’m not hurt, I’ve been able to avoid him thus far- but I’m really hoping to get out of there before he catches me off guard…” “Of course I’ll help you get out of that situation,” Kazuo assured him quickly, squeezing his hand again, “you’re my friend, I don’t want anything to happen to you! And I’d love to room with you!” His heart leapt in his chest when Doji squeezed his hand back, and he felt heat spring to his face yet again when the other smiled. “Thank you, Kaz. I’m counting on you.” ————— “He had this way of talking that just- it made you listen. He always seemed so confident, so sure in what he was saying even when he looked nervous. For someone who struggled to speak up for himself and was so nervous about being away from home for the first time, I looked up to him like my own personal hero.” He paused for a moment, then sighed, shaking his head. “...When someone always talks like they’re so sure of how things will go, it’s so easy to just… Listen.” ————— “Okay, okay, you can do this, you can do this.”

Kazuo clutched the small box tight to his chest, afraid he’d drop it but unwilling to stop pacing back and forth, filled with so much anxious energy he felt like a bubble ready to pop. “Things have been going good so far, he’s never stopped me when I grab his hand, I know he’s into guys- and even if he says no, that’s fine! I can get over it and move on, no problem, no need to ruin this over something as silly as this-” “Something as silly as what?” a voice asked behind him, and Kazuo nearly shifted from pure shock, nearly tripping on his on feet when he whirled around, a strangled yelp leaping from his throat. Doji chuckled at him, his roommate having walked in without him noticing. “You’re so cute when you’re startled,” he teased, tugging the door shut behind him, “but what’s got you so riled up this time?” Kazuo swallowed, hoping his blush wasn’t as obvious as it felt. Come on, he’s my friend, that won’t crash and burn just because I asked… “W-well, uh,” he started nervously, trying to stand up a little straighter so the hight difference wasn’t as much. “Um, I was- I was wondering if- if you wanted to go out, maybe…?” Doji raised an eyebrow, mouth twisting like he was confused. “Go out?” he echoed, and Kazuo took a deep breath before nodding, stepping closer to hand Doji what he was holding- a box of his favorite orange cream chocolates. “Out with me,” he smiled, only feeling a little shaky, “on- on a date.” Please, please say yes- Doji took the chocolates silently, looking startled, staring at the little box for what felt like hours. And then he smiled, letting out another faint chuckle when he looked up again, the sound making Kazuo's heart do flips in his chest. “Alright, sure. I’d love to.” ————— “And from there, it was good, it really was. We never fought, we complimented each other well, neither of us let our relationship get in the way of our studies- we were happy.” “...At least, I thought we were…: His voice broke at that, throat tightening, and Kazuo exhaled shakily, squeezing his eyes shut. “S-sorry, I need a minute…” The arm around his middle tightened and a soft kiss was pressed into his hair, a gentle hum above his head helping to pull him back from his thoughts. “Don’t push yourself, seashell,” Ryo murmured, holding him tighter against his chest, “it’s okay, you don’t have to tell me everything if you’re not up to it.” Kazuo tried to laugh, but the noise was shaky and choked up, and he laced their fingers together over his stomach. “I know, I just… I haven’t even gotten to the bad parts yet, and I’m already…” He heard Ryo huff as he trailed off, and next thing he knew he was being dragged up into a sitting position, his boyfriend arranging him in his lap before dropping another kiss on his head and wrapping both arms around him in a tight hug. “It’s okay, Kaz, really. Even if you haven’t gotten to the worst of it, he still hurt you, of course it’s gonna be hard to talk about- even the stuff before it. It still made a big impact, and it’s completely okay that it’s hard for you to talk about it now.” “...curse you for making so much sense,” he found himself muttering in reply, and the answering laugh had a warmth lighting in his chest that his relationship with Doji couldn’t even compare to. I’m happy with him. He smiled to himself, pulling away just so he could turn around and hold his boyfriend properly, pressing their foreheads together and closing his eyes. “Love you, seashell,” he heard Ryo murmur, a gentle hand coming up to caress his cheek and his voice soft with obvious affection. It felt like all the stress left his body at once. “Love you too,” he sighed back, unable to keep the fond smile off his face. “...Thank you.”

Chibi Mermay - Tengan

Since making Artworks for all the side characters would take me another 2-3 years I decided to take a shortcut and release their designs as Chibis instead. This way I can finish up the Mermaid series this year and start a new series afterwards!

I hope that’s still fine with everyone.

Tengan’s fins are based of a Cuttlefish (Inspired by Captain Cuttlefish from Splatoon)

I’m thinking about making these Stickers or Acrylic Charms in the future. I’d love to get some feedback from you guys, if anyone would be interested in that.
