Earlier this month, the world came together to celebrate a very special moment for the royal family of Jordan: the engagement of the son of Queen Rania and King Abdullah II, Prince Hussein. In case you missed it, the royal is now all set to marry Rajwa Al-Saif, a 28-year-old Saudi native who holds a graduate degree from the College of Architecture at Syracuse University.
The look, both timeless yet age-appropriate, was quick to catch everyone’s attention, and has been confirmed as a bestseller from the archives of Orient 499, the Lebanese label that prides itself on its dedication to sustainability, and spotlighting local craftsmanship.
“The abaya Rajwa Al-Saif wore is crafted from a rare handwoven fabric made with silk and linen threads,” co-founder Frank Luca revealed to Vogue Arabia. “The front and the back of the abaya are hand embroidered with sequins and beads in our atelier by our artisans. The intricate hand embroidery takes about three weeks to produce. The design was conceived by my co-founder and fashion designer Aida Kawas in 2013, and due to its popularity, we have reproduced it but in limited quantities. The attention to detail as well as the lightness of the fabric made this item a bestseller, and it has been produced a few times ever since its creation in 2013, but for a total number of 12 pieces throughout the years.”

Look closer at Rajwa Al-Saif’s elegant abaya, and you’ll notice a special message hidden in the details. On the back of the bride-to-be’s abaya sit two gold birds that seem to share a body. “The birds represent our brand, and this is a motif often found in our designs, be it objects or clothing,” Luca elaborated. “The two birds on the back represent two lovers united with the continuation of their chest.” It’s safe to say that the romantic meaning behind the embroidery on Al-Saif’s outfit made it the ideal choice for the occasion. I was curious to ask, have you ever drawn Kawarama? I mean, to be fair I've started following only recently and while I did go through a bit of your art tag I haven't seen all of them so I might have not seen it, it's just that when it comes to the Senju you seem to draw everyone except Kawa-

What is meant by the term ‘the gaze’ in this context?
Often times, European and Pakeha photographers are controlling the story of what is seen through the camera. Maori people themselves often are not the controllers of the ‘gaze’ (the story).
Discuss the role of portrait photography in a Maori context. What role does the portrait play?
The portrait in Maori culture is used ceremoniously in the meetinghouse as a means of showing admiration and respect for a deceased person. Portrait photography in relation to the meetinghouse is used as a way to communicate history of the people who belong there and connects genealogical relationships with visitors.
Provide an example (outside of the text) of how portrait photography of Māori was used in the nineteenth century.

What importance does a marae have to Māori people? Discuss why photographs of a marae might be restricted.
Maraes are ancient sacred spaces that are often ceremonial meeting places for Maori people. As the marae is representative of ancestors, culture and values, this can cause some restrictions in photography. Due to respect and tikanga, it would be disrespectful to not ask permission (which typically is decided by the elders). (Text: Mana is a term that includes the spiritual and inherited force of a place, person or thing and is closely linked with tapu, that which is sacred or restricted. 10 Therefore , to photograph without hav ing an understanding of the cultural and spiritual realm of the marae opens up the possibility of transgressing multiple thresholds.) Commercial photography can also diminish the importance of what is being photographed (breaking of tapu and effect on mana).
What is meant by ‘a loaded and contestable set of issues connected to the act of photographing in and around marae’?
Due to the different tikanga and kawa of each marae, the answer to the question may be different at different maraes. The people of each marae have to determine their own protocols, codes and customs to decide what aspects of and whether the marae can be photographed. There are many questions regarding respect and values that come behind that single question.
What is meant by mauri? Discuss how a photography can carry mauri.
Mauri meaning life force or essence can be carried in a photograph as it may represent the people, ancestors and values of the marae. It is a representation that the people want to be seen in a good light, that highlights the aspects of the maraes values in the way the people of that marae wish it to be shown. They would not want their culture to be compromised in any negative way.
What is mana and why is it an important concept?
Mana is the spiritual and inherited forces of a place, person or thing and is closely related with tapu (spiritual restriction/ strongest force in Maori life).
What are the different kinds of threshold spaces? How might a photographer transgress these spaces?
Text: “Social order factors such as gender, age, host or visitor, all determine behaviour during ritual processes of encounter on the marae. There are zones for eating, places for no food or drink, places for shoes, places where they are removed, places where photography may be permissible and places where it is not. Less visible social codes regulate who eats first. who sleeps where, and who can speak when.” Without having understanding of these spiritual and cultural concepts a photographer may transgress them.
What are the concepts of tapu and noa? How are they relevant to photography in this context?
Tapu meaning sacred and noa meaning commonplace or profane. The marae is a sacred space and commercial photography of the marae for money is profane, disrespecting and exploitative if not done correctly.
Why do issues of representation matter in the context of Te Ao Māori?
Representation is important as to not render sacred images and practices as mundane or be incorrectly portrayed due to the cultural and spiritual importance of these practices and places.
Who are the Pakeha photographers who developed relationships with Te Ao Maori and why is their work important?
Gil Hanly, Fiona Clark, Terry O'Connor , Sally Symes and Jill Carlyle. These photographers created photos for personal interest, historical record or editorial purposes. They continued long lasting relationships with the people and gained a deep understanding of the spiritual and cultural importance. They went about photographing in respectful ways.
Who is the Maori documentary photographer who won the Media Peace Prize? Look up and provide an example of his work, outside of this text.

‘take’ - what will it be used for? where and why? as to not exploit the sacredness of the marae.
‘a photo’ - what for? who will see it?
‘of the marae’ - what exactly will be photographed and who? are you aware of tapu and noa and the boundaries?
After hearing the respectful terms of photographing the marae, physically returning to share the photos and return them to the marae is an important step.
What does the term ‘kanohi ki kanohi’ mean and why is it important?
Meaning face to face. A photographer should return to the marae to share the results of the photographs with its people.

Oikawa passed the locker room in anticipation for his spiky haired childhood best friend to enter in annoyance for ditching him this morning. Oikawa was going to wait for Iwaizumi to come get him at six but he was feeling nervous and overwhelmed so he just left his house before the raven could even arrive. When he heard the door open he froze turning his head to look at the entrance expecting to see Iwaizumi instead he saw Makki and Mattsun walking in there conversation stopping as they turn their attention to the brunette “hey Kawa where’s Iwaizumi don’t you guys usually come together?”
