Day Out
Shangqi x Reader
A/N: So… many… self-indulgent… stuff…👁👁 Katy’s in here too but for admin sake, I’ll put it under Shangqi tags!
Genre: PG-13 (relatable stuff?)
Notes: Headcanons on how Shangqi (and Katy) would take you out to de-stress because we all know this duo is definition of FUN! And I really needed this 🫠
Tumblr media
Fridays. You loved Fridays. Not just because work ended, but you got to spend time with the people you cared about the most.
That also means letting your hair down and not giving a damn what people thought.
Leaving your workplace, you see two familiar faces waving excitedly at you, much to the amusement of your colleagues.
Shangqi takes you to a bbq joint where the meat was absolutely sizzling when placed on the grill. He was still very amazed at how much you could eat.
Karaoke nights! Plus points for Katy who brings honey lemon drinks made by her Grandma because the three of you are going to sing until you hack your lungs out!
Of course on some weeks, you appreciated quieter days and the duo absolutely respected that.
Shangqi takes you to a library with wonderful rooftop views and great beanbags to sit on and get lost in novels for hours.
Dinner is still in order though as the three of you share hot pot (which is excellent on rainy days).
Not all work days are fantastic, let’s put it out there. When the duo sees your forced happy expression, they know it’s time for a heart to heart talk.
You don’t hesitate to share with them your insecurities and fears of being incompetent.
Trial by error - that’s what Katy tells you. It’s basically her motto as she to tries to find her way in life when everyone else seemed to be doing fine.
Despite being raised by a literal warlord, Shangqi still feels a little intimidated standing next to mutants and eternals. So he gets it on a… superhero level.
But he does not minimize your worries!!!
Sometimes you cry, and by the time you do, you feel better and not like the whole weight of the world is sitting on your heart.
You apologize sheepishly every time even though they are your friends but they won’t even hear a word.
“Just let it all out girl!” Katy tells you. “If you say sorry one more time, you’re gonna have to drink up.”
Shangqi promises you that when you manage to take time off (or if you’re like me - ending internship), the three of you will have an awesome holiday of your choice!
He doesn’t tell you that it’ll be courtesy of Wong “Airlines”😬 where you don’t have to sit in a cramped space for 12 hours.
You and Katy are already deciding on where to go. Needless to say, you are very invested on that beach holiday.
Time to recover and kick some ass! - Katy’s words yet again as they send you back home after a night of de-stressing.
Tagging peeps who may need this in the future:

...in the details, Part 8
A/N: Warning for this series: 18+ audience (minors DNI), some cinematic level violence, some fluff and angst. Doubt that smut will be involved, but it may be implied. I’ll make sure that is noted clearly if it pops up.
All relationships, at this point in the story, are platonic, but there is romance in the cards for Kari and Bucky.
Please do not repost or translate my work. Likes, comments and reblogs are greatly appreciated.
Taglist is now open! Please send an ask, and I will gladly add you to the list. If I have added you and you do not wish to be on the list, please let me know, and I'll take you off the list.
Word count: 3.8k, give or take a word
And yes, those Ninjago figures are mine. I have a soft spot for the LEGO franchise.

Recap: At the end of Part 7, Sam and Bucky had just retrieved the shield from John Walker. This is what happened directly after that. The trip to Delcroix, LA gets a bit delayed…
Tumblr media
“Yo, Ms. Magic! We need your help!” Darcy replied when you asked Wong what he wanted in the first place, and she pushed past the Sorcerer Supreme and found herself on the streets of Riga, Latvia. The magic used to make the portal didn’t seem to phase her one bit. “Do I have time to go get some local snacks, or is that a bad idea? I do have my passport.”
You looked at Sam and Bucky and shook your head, then you decided to get Sarah on FaceTime instead of via text. “This is getting too damned confusing!” you yelled just as Sarah’s face came into view.
“Of course you let my sister see me like this,” Sam grumbled as he tucked the shield under his arm.
“Eight brothers, remember?” you groaned as you turned the phone back in your direction. “Sarah, I will get down to Delacroix as fast as I can, but I have to take care of something first. You’re outside, right?”
“Tree behind me, so yeah, I’m outside,” Sarah noted as two small green portals opened—one in Riga, and one in Delacroix. You whistled, and suddenly a crow came flying down from one of the trees near where you were standing.
“That’s a good girl,” you said as you reached in your belt pouch with your left hand as the crow landed on your right arm. You placed a tiny treat in the crow’s beak before showing her to everyone in Riga, the group inside Wong’s portal and to Sarah. “This is Stardust, one of the blessed members of my corax. I’m sending her to Delacroix until I get there. If something is amiss, she will let me know and call on the rest of the corax to defend you.”
“Crows?” Sam asked as he shook his head.
“Remember Baltimore?” you asked as you let Stardust fly through the portal, and you watched the crow land in the tree behind Sarah. “Stardust can summon an army of crows and ravens. I am not unfamiliar with St. Bernard Parish, Sam, even if I last saw it a very long time ago. Now, I better go before Dr. Lewis decides to go sightseeing and makes Wong worry too much again,” you said as you quickly stopped next to Darcy just outside the portal.
You had not noticed the two people standing beside Bruce until now. They were not familiar, but the item they possessed certainly was. That was not necessarily a good thing.
“Kari, what’s wrong?” were the only words Bucky got out of his mouth as ten rings flew out of the male newcomer’s backpack and onto your forearms. They started to glow a brilliant green as you lifted off the ground.
“Is she supposed to be doing that? And why are they all green now?” the female newcomer asked her companion as Bruce stepped through the portal. Bruce was no longer Hulked out, but his arm was still in a sling.
“Kari, these are Shang-Chi and Katy,” Banner started to say as he continued to step forward. “They’re on our side.”
“I had to be sure,” you said as you started to lower yourself to the ground, the rings still glowing on your arms. “I fought your father, Shang-Chi. A very long time ago. It was not an experience I want to relive any time soon. I’m sorry for your loss. The rings…they told me what happened. I can read events off most mystic weaponry. And books. Not like Willow on Buffy sucking up the ink, but close enough.”
Bucky and Sam stepped back a bit as you landed, and you took a deep breath before letting the rings return to their rightful owner. “Give me a minute, guys,” you said to the group around Bruce before turning back to your partners. “Sam, I will haul ass to Delacroix as soon as I help Bruce and Wong with those rings. I’ll fill you in then, but…”
You placed one hand on each man’s shoulder and proceeded to heal them of their wounds from the fight with Walker. It hurt like a bitch, but it needed to be done. “Stay safe, and don’t drive each other or Sarah crazy. Please. And before you flip out, I did tell you I can do a lot of things I don’t talk about. If it’s a mystic weapon, I can usually wield it or at the very least pick up a bit of history by touching it. Mjolnir might be the biggest exception, but then again, I’ve never tried to lift it. Never needed to.”
“You can barely stand,” Bucky said as he gave you this very weird look. It had to be that screwy link Wanda set into motion rearing its ugly head again. “Why did you do that?”
“You know, you weren’t supposed to notice that. The barely standing part, I mean,” you chuckled as you leaned your head closer to Bucky’s. “Figures you would. And heal you two? You can’t do what you need to do if you are sitting in adjoining hospital beds,” you said as you winced a bit. “I’m not healing at top speed, but I’ll be OK. Now, I better go see what’s going on with those rings. You do not want to be on the receiving end of an energy blast from those. Trust me.”
Your footing slipped as you let go of both Sam and Bucky, and you prayed no one was going to make a stupid fuss about it. “So, Darcy, what else did I miss?”
“I knew you’d be able to use those rings!” Darcy said with a huge grin as she held out her hand to Wong. “That will be five bucks, please! Girl power for the win!”
“You bet on Kari being able to do that?” Sam asked as he held the shield a little bit closer, but then he looked down at it and saw the blood was gone. “Son of a gun…” he added as he showed the now-clean shield to Bucky.
“You two be good,” you said with a laugh as you got closer to Bruce and Wong. {{I’m faking it. Those two were in worse shape than I let on. I don’t want them seeing me buckle, or they will never head out}} you said telepathically to Wong as you more or less propelled yourself into the portal and fell to your knees as it closed behind all of you. “Walker nearly took both of them out. He damned near electrocuted Bucky, and he tried to take off Sam’s head at one point. If I see him again, he and I will have words…”
“I take it that’s bad?” Katy asked Darcy as both women moved to one of the tables inside the Stark lab. “The having words part. The rest sounded horrible.”
“She doesn’t mean Chandrasekhar limit or interferometry, Katy,” Darcy replied as she went to grab a med kit to hand to Bruce. “Sorry. Astrophysics speak. More like, ‘I’ll turn you into a toad for hurting my friends, you swamp rat.’ Like that.”
“For the record, I have never turned anyone into a toad,” you said with a gasp as Wong helped you get up onto Bruce’s exam table. “You know, on second thought, I might have tried it on Zemo or Walker. Walker got the last vial of Super Soldier serum, so everything is a mess.”
“No funny business until we get you healed,” Wong said as he shook his head. “Strange gives me enough grief, you know.”
You grunted as Bruce stood back and watched Wong use a spell to hasten your natural healing abilities. “Why didn’t you just go help them instead of doing this healing thing?” Banner asked as your superficial wounds started to close up first. “Wouldn’t it have been easier?”
“Easier? Sure. Would it have helped those two work out their problems that center around that shield? Not in the least. They need to sit down and talk. I’m hoping they will down in Delacroix. Now, how did you find our new recruits here?”
“That would be on me,” Wong said as Shang-Chi and Katy came closer to the exam table. “I brought them here from San Francisco. How do you know Shang-Chi’s father?”
“I fought in an army that went up against the Ten Rings several hundred years ago. Getting blasted by those rings is not something I want to experience again in my lifetime. Slammed me into a cliff wall. Took me weeks to fully heal.”
“So, do you know about Ta Lo?” Shang-Chi asked as he set down the backpack that held the rings.
“Never been there, but I hear it is beautiful,” you replied as you started to flex your fingers and wiggle your toes in your boots. “My people tend to hold Tír na nÓg in the same regard you hold Ta Lo, I guess. A land of beauty and mystery beheld by only a few worthy souls. So, what exactly do you need me for, Wong? Bruce?”
“Carol had no idea where these came from, and you were actually close enough to bring here to test them out. She’s….” Bruce started to say, but all you did was laugh as you reached up and patted him on his good shoulder.
“Busy? Yeah, that’s Carol. Gave the speech about you calling her? I don’t even have her number,” you answered as Bruce was now the one chuckling. “Let me pull out my phone,” you said as you held it up and let Shang-Chi and Katy see your number. “Now, if you’d like to text me your contact info, I’ll gladly keep in touch unless I am fighting in The Rift again. We get no phone signals there,” you said as both Katy and Shang-Chi sent you their details. “Thanks. And if you are staying in New York, you are more than welcome to crash at my place in Brooklyn. And I own a bakery café in Manhattan, and Avengers always get free food. I’ll make sure my managers are notified.”
“Hey! What about astrophysicists?” Darcy yelped as she waved her phone in front of her face.
“Of course you are on the list!” you said with a grin as you tried to bite back the pain of the next injury that started to heal. “Darcy, bubbala. How could we not have you on the list? And you know you can crash at my place anytime. I owe you for your help in Westview.”
“At least you sound better,” Bruce noted as he ran a scan to see how you were healing. “I would get Dr. Cho here, but she’s at a conference in Madrid.”
“I’ll be fine, Bruce. Now, what do you want to know about the rings? No one I know seemed to have a clue about their origin, and I mean that going back a long time. If I may…”
You opened one of your pocket dimension “holes” and pulled out a book that looked almost as old as you felt. “My friend Devnet used to chronicle things from our adventures. This book has all sorts of info on the weapons we came across. Here, you can borrow it for as long as you need, guys. The text appears in any language you need it to be in, so you should have no trouble.”
“That’s freaky,” Katy said as she picked up the book and the text changed to Mandarin. “What are you, exactly? Are you like Shaun’s dad?”
Your eyes flicked up at the use of Shaun, but then you realized Katy meant Shang-Chi. “No. I’m the avatar for the Celtic battle goddess The Morrigan. I have been since I was born 1,500 years ago. I know. It makes no sense.”
“It makes as much sense as a forest that tried to kill us and a soul sucking monster that almost destroyed Ta Lo,” Shang-Chi replied as you nodded to him.
“So, to get to the real nitty gritty,” Darcy said as she picked up the book Katy had been looking at, “you and the Buckster?”
“Are friends. Teammates. That’s all,” you groaned as you were suddenly very glad Bucky and Sam were not there.
“And that little head leaning thing?” Darcy asked as you held your head in your hands.
“Since when did you get a degree in reading body language?” you chuckled as Wong’s spell finally finished healing your most minor injuries. The general feeling of ick would take time to go away as the bigger wounds started to resolve themselves. “I didn’t want him freaking out. He’s going to deal with getting Zemo to the Wakandans, and Sam is going home to check on his sister Sarah and her boys. I was supposed to go to Delacroix first to help out there, so that is going to be my next stop. And I am guessing Bucky will join Sam as soon as he gets Zemo sorted. Frankly, I haven’t been to Louisiana since the early 1900s, and I could use some time down there.”
“With Bucky,” Darcy said under her breath before looking innocently up to the ceiling.
“He is still trying to get his own life sorted. He doesn’t need me butting into what he needs to do…”
“You mean that thing with the therapist we interrupted earlier?” Bruce asked as he kept running scans on you.
“Trust me, Bucky was likely very happy when that session ended,” you said quietly as you thought about what exactly John Walker had done when he had Bucky’s sessions ended on his word alone. “Oh shite.”
“Wha…” Katy started to say as she looked over at you and then stepped back. “Wings? Now you sprout wings?”
“New to me, too,” Darcy noted as she looked at the scan readout as Bruce started muttering under his breath. “And that can’t be good.”
“Kari, I think you better calm down,” Bruce said as he put one hand on your shoulder. “What upset you?”
“Why did Walker have Buck’s session ended? To be nice? Or to get him in trouble later on? Sorry about the wings. Old habits…” you said as you calmed yourself and pulled them back, the flourish of smoke and strands of darkness causing even Wong to gasp. “You’ve seen me do that before, Wong. You too, Bruce. Why the surprise now?”
“The last time you did that you went after Ebony Maw and Proxima Midnight. You did look pretty damned terrifying in that fight, Kari,” Bruce said as he stepped back, all the while keeping one eye on your scans.
“We all did,” you sighed as you hopped off the exam table. “Part of the job, I guess. Now, be honest, those rings are not the only reason you wanted me here. Did you find something in Tony’s files about me?”
“No, this was solely about the rings,” Wong replied as he motioned for Shang-Chi to come over with his bag. “So, what do you know about them?”
“Other than the light they emit depending on the person wielding them? Not bloody much. The energy signature is not anything from this world. They may be extraterrestrial, or they may come from another reality entirely. I have never encountered anything like them. They give the bearer a form of immortality, but I have no clue how it works. Is there anyone in Ta Lo who might be able to tell you more about them, Shang-Chi?”
“My aunt, maybe. Some of the village elders,” he said as he sat down and looked back at Katy. “There might be records in my father’s things in his compound. I’ll see if my sister found anything.”
“She’s been busy,” Katy said with a weird look on her face. “She runs a fight club in Macau. And now, well, she may be running the Ten Rings. I know. It sounds weird. My Mom would love her. Classic super-achiever.”
“Oh,” was the only word you got out of your mouth as you silently prayed Shang-Chi’s sister was not actually going to run the ancient group of assassins going forward. “Not weird so much as extremely complicated.” You looked at Bruce and Wong and had the haunting feeling that little nugget of information would bite you all on the ass one day.
“And…” Bruce started to say as there was a crash near the entrance to the lab. “Hello?”
“I am so sorry,” Peter Parker said as he walked in with Ned Leeds. “We wanted to help. Hey everyone. Whoa, what happened to you, Kari?”
“Tried to keep a couple of our teammates from getting too injured in a fight,” you replied as you winced, suddenly noticing Ned staring with his mouth wide open. “Ned, you OK?”
“You remembered my name,” the high schooler replied as you giggled a bit. “I mean, you really remembered my name.”
“Of course I did. I even have that minifigure you gave me,” you said as you pulled a small LEGO figure from your pouch. “Nya from Ninjago. Master of the elemental power of water. Great inventor. Brave. Loyal. One of my good luck charms, guys. I even got her boyfriend,” you noted as you pulled the figure of Jay, master of lightning, from the bag as well. “I can use all the luck I can get some days!”
Tumblr media
“So, what did we walk in on?” Peter asked as he finally dropped his backpack on a chair and looked at your scans with Bruce. “Where are Sam and Bucky?”
“Tying up loose ends and trying to find some new leads, guys. Which is what I will be doing once things are wrapped up here. Unless you want me to go through the archives while I’m here, Bruce? I have no idea what Tony had in his records, but I’m sure some of it pertains to me. I know I scared him a lot at the end.”
“Not as much as you think,” Bruce noted as he set down his tablet. “But that talk can wait for another day. Peter, Ned…what are you doing?”
By now Ned was tapping away at a computer console at one of the desks, and soon your file was popping up on holoscreens around the lab. “Uhm, I didn’t mean to do that. I was looking at your scans. And I probably shouldn’t have been doing that either, but I’m the guy in the chair for Spider-Man, so…” he added as he motioned to the place he was sitting.
The questions started to fly after that. Keeping track of who asked what seemed a bit ridiculous at this point, so you didn't even try.
“You fought Rasputin?”
“What was Howard Stark really like?”
“What do you mean you don’t like chili dogs?”
“Who is Scáthach anyway?”
“Are there really Nephilim warriors running around?”
“What exactly is The Rift, and why can’t we go there?”
“You had a brother who was a vampire?”
“Hey!” you shouted as you banged your hand on one of the desks. “Could you all slow down please? Now…”
You took a deep breath as you tried to answer all the questions thrown at you.
“Yes, I was involved in one of the initial attempts to kill Rasputin. The bastard was hard to kill, but I was not involved in his final demise. We tried poison. He shrugged it off like water.”
This was going to take longer than you had hoped, but you pressed on anyway.
“Howard Stark was brilliant and funny, but the loss of Steve Rogers broke his spirit in many ways. That is one reason he and Peggy went on to form SHIELD. They were both trying to fill holes in their lives and honor someone who meant the world to them. Same as me with both Steve and Bucky back then.”
Then the thought of chili dogs started to make you hungry, so the first thing you planned to do in Delacroix was find food ASAP.
“I love chili, but I am not a fan of putting it on hot dogs. Not really that big a deal, right? Not a fan of sauerkraut either. Just a personal preference. Like Wong’s love of tuna melts. For the record, I like relish, yellow mustard and ketchup on my franks.”
And the history question up next brought back many memories of your teenage years.
“Now, Scáthach was a Scottish warrior, a dear friend and one of my trainers way, way, way back in the day. She usually only trained men. She made an exception in my case. My mamo, my grandmother that is, Siofra pulled a lot of strings to get her as my trainer. My mother Kennis hated the idea. Mama and Mamo did not see eye to eye very often.”
Next you had to deal with the War Host of Heaven and their earthly children. This was going to get weird fast.
“As the literal children of Heaven, Nephilim warriors travel in the shadows, and you would more than likely see them fighting demons than walking amongst us. As for The Rift, yes, I have worked with them there. Unless you are blessed for battle, a mortal cannot enter The Rift. Asgardians can fight there, though, so yes, I fought at Thor and Loki’s side there. It is the space between worlds. Think of it as the buffer zone between here and another, not so pleasant dimension.”
And finally you got to your brother, the best dancer of your clan and the one who always knew how to lift your spirits.
“My brother Ewan was turned in the early 1800s by a Norse vampire named Alrik. Ewan was the second youngest of my brothers. He was able to transform himself into emerald mist instead of a bat. That was his element of surprise. He was staked during a battle in The Rift. Goddess, I miss seeing him here. I miss all my siblings. Now, with all that out of the way…”
You walked over to Ned’s seat and looked over his shoulder. “Ned, it was an accident. Don’t worry about it. But next time, ask Dr. Banner before you start tapping keypads, OK?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Ned replied, but you quickly put your hand on his shoulder.
“Kari is fine,” you said as you started to transform your uniform to something a bit more common for the likes of Delacroix. “Bruce, Wong, I better scoot,” you said as you started to open a portal away from everyone else. “Katy, Shang-Chi, I'll be in touch as soon as this mess with the Flag Smashers is finished. I am a text or call away for any of you. I promise. Sam was worried that those Flag Smasher operatives might go after his sister and nephews. I can’t let them be in the line of fire, and I know Sam might not get down there too fast. He’s likely getting a lift from the Air Force, and we all know portals are faster,” you said as you stepped through onto the green grass outside the Wilson house in Delacroix.
As the portal started to close, you didn’t pay much attention to what was going on in the lab anymore, but you did hear one question that made you freeze for a moment.
You glanced back to see Peter and Ned looking at a hologram, and then the words left Peter’s mouth as the portal closed.
“Who is Cailleach?”

Testing Strength | Xu Xialing x Katy Chen
Prompt: Knot
Words: 1433
Fandom: Marvel (MCU)
A/N: I’ve been planning this story since January and never got around to finishing it. Hopefully, I’ll do some rewrites and turn it into a proper series. Takes place sometime after the event of the movie.
Summary: Katy finds her new purpose in life after training under the Avengers, though she still has a lot to learn and being associated with the siblings of the once powerful leader of the Ten Rings puts a target on her back. Meanwhile, Xialing hopes to uncover her father’s past while asserting her position as the new Ten Rings leader.
-
Katy was never a morning person in the first place. It took a lot of effort to haul herself off the bed and get ready, unlike her friend, Shangqi. Always the punctual and disciplined one, but not any more responsible as she was when it came to karaoke nights. So, a phone call from him at five in the morning while she was still recovering from a hangover wasn’t ideal. How he would have been functioning still to even manage to call her was a mystery, or maybe it was that mystical magic stuff that ran through his family.
“No,” was her immediate response as she answered.
“Come on, meet me outside,” he said before hanging up.
His voice sounded monotonous but her brain was too muddy to register it. He wouldn’t have called this early if it wasn’t important. They’re technically new Avengers, after all. Or, at least, still in that six months probation period. Wouldn’t want to make a bad impression on someone like Captain America.
She trudged back and forth between her room and the bathroom, her mom clattering away in the kitchen while her nainai was playing cards with her little brother. They don’t know anything about Macau, the Golden Dagger, the Ten Rings, or Ta Lo. All she had told them about that time was that Shaun had a family emergency and she had gone with him as emotional support.
They do know about a career change, she just didn’t specify what it was. Though, her little brother has seen that Bus Boy video and asked if Shaun was joining the Avengers. Katy made him promise to shut up about it with the promise of getting a picture with those famous superheroes. As soon as the big paychecks come in, her mom will stop worrying about it, and maybe then, Katy will tell them.
“I’m leaving,” she announced, shoving her shoes on.
Her mom stuck her head out of the kitchen. “Without breakfast?”
“Yeah, Shaun wanted to head out early.”
“Well, okay… are you sure Shaun doesn’t want to come in and eat? He usually stops by first- “
“It’s fine, mom.”
“Yeah, I’m sure they want to head out early in case of any mishaps like that bus incident that happened a couple of months ago, right, Katy?” Ruihua said unconvincingly with a wink.
Katy forced out a laugh. “Yeah, yeah.” She shot him a quick glare and cursed at him under her breath before their nainai could turn around to face her. “I’ll try to be home early this time,” she added with a smile to her.
She hummed, muttering in Mandarin, “Good. But this overworking and spending too much time with Shaun when you’re not even dating is lowering your chances –”
Katy didn’t want to cut off her grandmother, but she was tired of hearing this. She could see her concerns, but it was old-fashion to her. Marriage and making a family isn’t a priority in this day and age. While the world could end at any moment with each colossal threat in addition to the constant reminder from her nainai that she wasn’t getting younger and wants to be alive to see her great-grandkids, Katy still did not want to force herself to fulfill her nainai’s wishes.
Her mother would say that it was very American of her to think this way, but she tried her hand in dating and also could not see Shangqi as more than a friend. It had been a few years since she graduated from college, but only now did she feel that drive to push herself to her full potential. Being forced to go on a date with one of Nainai's friend’s grandsons isn’t going to help her.
So, she walked out.
If only she tried to tolerate her nainai’s lectures and make Shangqi suffer and wait while she indulged in her mother’s cooking, maybe things would have turned out different.
-
Xialing wasted no time in reforming her father’s organization. She had made her own empire in Macau at the age of 16, after all, and with the Ten Rings, she saw only endless potential to create anything she wanted. She wasn’t worried about her brother’s reaction. He was no boy scout, either, and she wasn’t going to rule like her father.
It pained her that even after all those years, when Shangqi had been the one to run away first, he still regarded him with pride while he merely glanced at her when she had some use to him. It wasn’t his approval that she was looking for, she just wanted her father back. After all that time when her mother passed, her father turned away from her, and her brother abandoned her, and even after going off on her own to create the Golden Dagger Club, they were still her family.
Which was why she still held that anger after seeing Shangqi for the first time in years at her club and how there was still bitterness when her father barely acknowledged her. Having to live in the shadows for so long, she wondered how much of Xu Wenwu did she and her brother even know of.
After the major renovation made around the headquarters and her home, she made a point to dig through his studies in between training sessions. Her father had lived for a thousand years. How much of history was influenced by him and how much of the Chinese myths and legends  were about him?
It was a month into taking over the Ten Rings when Razor-Fist, or Mattias, notified her of a threat in one of their territories and she was determined to find out how far exactly did the empire stretched and how many enemies did he have. If word got out that the immortal leader of the legendary Ten Rings was gone, a small territory dispute would be the least of her problems. A power vacuum between the Ten Rings and its enemies that could lead to chaos.
Her father was ambitious and had been determined to see everything through. What he wanted was what he would get. She guessed that that was something that she got from him. Centuries worth of his ascent to being the greatest power, all preserved in his study. Xialing wondered if he had ever intended for his children to read them and if her mother knew or chose to leave it in the past.
She leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes, remembering when her mother would whisper stories of Ta Lo as she tucked her into bed and the moment when she gave her the jade pendant. This whole time, her mother wanted them to see her village, the key to finding it having been kept as a memento of her so that she was always with them. How different things would have been if she had believed in those stories when she got older and searched for them as soon as she ran away.
A knock brought her back to the present. She gingerly closed one of her father’s journals and granted the person to come in. Jon Jon walked through the door with a medium sized box tucked under his arm, looking breathless as sweat soaked his face. Mattias walked in behind him, his face riddled with bad news as he pressed his lips together in a frown.
“Boss,” Jon Jon said, pulling out a crumpled envelope from his jacket, having been stuffed in in his haste to reach her. Once she took it, he slid the box onto her desk carefully and stepped back.
She flipped the envelope over, her eyes recognizing the symbol of the White Dragon organization.
“I thought that they were dealt with,” she said, directing it to Mattias.
Mattias grunted. “There’s been a shift in the black market. Rumored magical items being looted and sold into the circuit. Our resources say that a few of the major gangs operating under our territories have acquired them.”
“They’re planning to take over the Ten Rings,” she stated rather than questioning. It was inevitable.
She opened the envelope with a small dagger, steeling herself for what the contents could be. Jon Jon and Mattias waited patiently, watching their boss’s expression darken the longer she read the note. Her eyes flickered over to the box, a knot forming in her stomach as she quickly cut it open, movements only slowing as she peeled the flaps open.
“They’ve got Katy,” she growled, staring down at the familiar black embroidered bomber jacket that Katy Chen had worn to her club.

You remember that era, where all the fics were the Avengers being best friends living in Avengers Tower.
Thor's obsessed with pop tarts and Hawkeyes in the vents for some reason.
Natasha steals everyone's clothes, Tony and Bruce are Science Bros TM doing all kinds of chaos in the labs.
Steve's sketchbook is beside him and Jarvis is helping him figure out his new phone.
I really want that era for the current MCU.
Just
Kamala and Darcy making lists of all the classics Carol needs to watch.
Yelena winning family game night. Demands Jimmy teachers her his card tricks.
Sam and Shang trying to out dance each other and pulling out the DDR machines.
Kate casually spoiling her friends.
While Bucky and Katy collect bets.
Monica and Wanda watching sitcoms together on rainy nights.
Zemo and Sharon showing up like they aren't both wanted criminals to watch horror movies.

...in the details, Part 9
A/N: Warning for this series: 18+ audience (minors DNI), some cinematic level violence, some fluff and angst. Doubt that smut will be involved, but it may be implied. I’ll make sure that is noted clearly if it pops up.
All relationships, at this point in the story, are platonic, but there is romance in the cards for Kari and Bucky.
Please do not repost or translate my work. Likes, comments and reblogs are greatly appreciated.

Where we last left this motley crew: Kari was now on her way to Delacroix, LA, but things were still bubbling along at the Stark Lab where Bruce, Wong, Darcy, Shang-Chi, Katy, Peter and Ned were all trying to find the answer to one question:
Tumblr media
“I have no idea who or what a Cailleach is, do you?” Darcy said as she gazed up at the holographic figure hovering in the air before the group. “Bruce, any clue?”
“You’re asking me? Mythology and fantasy novels are not my go-to subjects, Darcy,” Bruce replied as he turned to Wong. Wong looked more like he wanted to run to the nearest mountaintop than answer that question. “Wong, I’m guessing from the look on your face that you know and just don’t want to go there at the moment.”
Wong stood with his arms crossed, staring at Bruce. “No, I have no idea who that woman is. Not exactly anyway. Her name is in some ancient texts in Kamar-Taj. But there has never been any clear context about who she is or what she can do.”
“Guys, I’m sure the database has the answers,” Ned said as he tapped on his keyboard. “What’s the AI called here? Peter’s is called Karen.”
“Friday, what can you tell us about Cailleach?” Bruce asked, but the AI stayed quiet for a good few seconds.
“I’m sorry, Doctor Banner,” the AI said with a lovely Irish lilt, “but Mr. Stark has put that information off limits for now. You’ll need the OK from Ms. Potts to access it.”
“Seriously?” Darcy yelped as she looked at the hologram. “He didn’t set things up in case something went bad? Great.”
“Let me get Pepper on the phone,” Bruce said as he started calling up a view screen so she could see everyone when they got through to her. “Pepper, Hi. Uhm, what’s going on there?”
“Oh, Hi Bruce! Morgan is building something…” Pepper turned to face where Morgan was sitting.
“Hi Uncle Bruce!” Morgan shouted as she showed off the castle she was building from LEGO. At least it looked like a castle. “Where’s Auntie Kari? I need her to tell me if this horse has the right stuff for battle. My troops are gonna fight a dinosaur.”
“Hi, Morgan. I was calling your mom to talk about Auntie Kari. Can we borrow your mom for a minute?”
"Sure, but not too long! She promised to help me make a tower for Rapunzel!"
“What’s wrong?” Pepper asked as she walked away from Morgan and finally looked at what was going on at the lab. “Oh, Friday blocked access? I can see the hologram is red.”
“Yeah, Tony set up a failsafe on this file, and we need to access it. I can explain the details to you later, but we could use an access code.”
“Sending clearance over the line now,” Pepper said as she tapped keys on her own computer console. “Could you use my help? You look like you’ve got a full house. New faces, too.”
Bruce chuckled as he opened up the view a bit so Pepper could see more of what was going on in the lab. “Wanda got in trouble, and Kari went to help her. Some bad magic stuff happened, and we’re trying to help Kari fix it. That’s about as simple an explanation as I can give you right now.”
Pepper sighed as she nodded to Bruce, and the look on her face said a lot more than Banner expected. “Pepper, yeah. If you want to head down here to Jersey, great. I’ll keep the coffee pot on.”
Tumblr media
About an hour later, Pepper came into the lab, with Morgan and Happy Hogan trailing behind her. “Bruce, we’re here. We brought along some food,” she said as Happy set down bags from a local diner.
“Pepper Potts, Xu Shang-Chi and Katy Chen, and I think you know Dr. Darcy Lewis,” Bruce said as he gave Pepper a hug. “And Peter’s friend Ned Leeds.”
“Hey, Pepper. Hey, Happy,” Peter said before Morgan ran over and almost tackled him. “And who is this linebacker for the Giants?”
“Petey! We brought dinner! And I wanna help Aunt Kari!” Morgan shouted before she ran back to Happy to help set out the food.
“So, the file’s working now?” Pepper asked as she looked at the hologram. “We can’t see a face? Why?”
“According to Tony’s records, he and Steve talked to Thor about this at some point, but even he had no idea who this is. She is bad. That’s all I know. And Cailleach is not so much a name as a code name or an honorific. It’s apparently a reference to a crone in Celtic mythology. I’m guessing she is one of the rogues’ gallery of people Kari talks about when she insists we do not want to fight the people who want her dead.”
“Maybe this person is part of the bad guys in The Rift?” Peter said as he went to help Morgan so she didn’t drop a big bag of food on the floor. “Kari told us about them one day at lunch, right, Ned?”
“Right! At that pizza place when we all got back from the blip,” Ned said before Wong spun around, his tuna melt almost dropping from his hands. He had literally grabbed one from the New York Sanctum just before Pepper arrived. He was going to ask Ned to go get food, but Pepper saved the day, as usual.
“Bruce, Kari never mentioned that, did she?” Wong asked as Banner shook his head. “Darcy, you said she was missing about six months’ worth of time when you two sat in Westview? You mentioned that when we first started trying to unravel this mess.”
“Bingo on the time frame. She went back to Ireland for a bit, then off to Westview, and then she did the Sam and Bucky stuff, but a hole about the size of Hoboken is sitting in the middle of everything,” Darcy noted as she grabbed some fries. “Trying to break up Wanda and Agatha Harkness’ fight really knocked Kari for a loop.”
“Agatha Harkness?” Pepper asked as Wong rolled his eyes. “Oh. Bad magical person?”
“You could say that, and you would not be wrong. Kari was trying to make everyone forget her for some very weird reason,” Wong said as Katy and Darcy both chimed in with the one reply that made any sense—“Bucky Barnes”—and then Wong continued his story.
“Kari cast her spell, and whatever happened in Westview with Wanda made it go off the rails. She’s tied to Barnes on some psionic level, and we can’t undo it yet. Wanda may have wanted to...”
"Get the old Buckster to Westview for Kari. As Husband Material. Wanda created cats for them for crying out loud. I was there. Darcy Lewis, circus entertainer extraordinaire."
“Would anyone in Asgard be able to help? They have magic wielders. I know what Kari does is different from what you and Stephen do,” Pepper said as she looked to see if Morgan was playing or paying more attention to the grown up chatter going on around her. “Maybe they could help? This is a huge mess.”
“I can see if Valkyrie has anyone who might be able to give us some help,” Bruce said as he looked up at the hologram again. “Friday, where did Tony get the information for this file?”
“From some of Howard Stark’s personal papers,” the AI replied as some files appeared on screens around the lab. “Howard was once in a relationship with a friend of Kari’s named Devnet Casey. Devnet…”
“The magic book lady!” Katy shouted as she grabbed the volume on mystic weapons that was sitting on one of the tables. “This was written by Devnet Casey! Who is probably dead…”
“No,” Friday said as a picture of Devnet appeared where the hologram had been. “She’s very much alive and living in Ireland. She lectures at the National University of Ireland, Galway.”
“Do I sense a road trip?” Darcy asked as she looked at Bruce. “Please? I’ve never been to Ireland, and I’d love to go sing in a pub there and eat those boxty things Kari makes. Potato pancakes. Like latkes but not.”
“Maybe we should see if we can contact her at the university before we just jump on a jet or open a portal?” Pepper replied before hearing Morgan shout “oops!” as Happy almost knocked over a small box of files. “Morgan? Happy? What is that? It looks old, and Tony was not a fan of old.”
“It says it belonged to Uncle Steve!” Morgan said as she pointed to writing on the side of the box. “What’s inside?”
Hogan opened the box and held up what looked like evidence envelopes and confidential file jackets. “These all belonged to Phil Coulson. Why did Steve Rogers have a bunch of stuff that belonged to a SHIELD agent? Didn’t Coulson die on the Helicarrier when Loki was making life difficult?”
“Yes, he did. I’ll ask Maria Hill about this stuff,” Pepper said with a small sigh as she walked over to look at the box. “Wait,” she said as she took one envelope from Happy. “Oh, Tony. What were you digging up this time?”
Bruce walked over toward Pepper, Happy and the box before glancing back at Wong. “What is it, Pepper?”
Before Pepper could answer, a FaceTime call request came in from Ireland. The screen lit up, and on the other side of the Atlantic, Devnet Casey sat on a brown leather sofa with a cup of tea in her hand and her Irish wolfhound Tyrone’s head resting on her knee. If she were compared to an actor or movie character, she was the real life version of Xena’s Gabrielle, a petite, short-haired blonde who now chose tweed and denim over leather.
“Hello. I’m not exactly used to getting call requests from the States. Especially at this hour. So, is this about a redhead? I’m betting it is. I haven’t heard from Kari in ages. Is it a man this time, or did the government lock her up because of those damnable Accords? She never listens. About men or mayhem!”
“Oh hey there! Dr. Darcy Lewis here, and Wong, Sorcerer Supreme, and a seeming cast of thousands. And yes, it’s about Kari. Can we come visit you? We thought you might be able to help.”
“I’ll do you one better,” Dev said as everyone saw her get up, and in an instant she was in the middle of the lab via her own portal. “Ty, sweetie, you need to stay home while Mama talks to these nice people. You can go snuggle in the bed, and I’ll be back as soon as I can,” she said to her dog as the portal closed. “Now, has Kari gone off the radar entirely? Or is she just acting weird again? And…who told you about her?” she asked as she pointed to the hologram.
“Howard Stark did, more or less,” Bruce said as he walked over. “Bruce Banner. We can do all the introductions later.”
“You spoke at NUIG a few years ago. Before I got dusty, I mean. I went to your talk. You and Tony Stark...” Dev started to say as she looked over and saw Pepper. “I’m so sorry for your loss. I was one of Howard’s, uhm, lady friends, shall we say, before he met Maria. Kari told me all about Tony when he was younger. She babysat for Howard and Maria once. Tony was a very spirited child.”
“You mean my dad!” Morgan shouted as she ran up next to her mother. “He was the best!”
“Indeed he was,” Dev said as she stopped and looked at the Stark mini-me standing there. “You remind me of your grandpa. Now, back to Kari. What do you know about Cailleach?”
Darcy had maneuvered herself so she was standing next to a box of cookies the Stark crew had brought in with them. She finally found a chocolate chip cookie and started to nibble on it. “Next to nothing? Can’t see a face. No data in the database beyond that goofy image.”
Dev looked around the room and seemed to be debating what to do next as she moved to face the hologram. “I wish Kari were here. It’s her life, and none of us should be digging into it without her here. It’s not as simple as fighting off aliens or robots. I know this is cliché, but it is complicated.”
“Especially because she got magically whammied,” Ned said as he waved at Devnet from his chair. “She was trying to help Wanda Maximoff, and some other weird witch hit her with an energy blast.”
“That would have been helpful at the top,” Dev grumbled as she looked at the hologram again. “What kind of magic?”
“Wanda is a user of chaos magic,” Wong said very bluntly, “and Agatha Harkness…”
“A succubus. She’s a succubus. I’ve heard about her but never had the pleasure of fighting her. Creepy is the best word to describe her. And cracked like an old pot. She likely hasn’t had a good thought since 1692 from what I’ve been told. So chaos magic and succubus powers, and you had the Goddess in the middle. Or was she trying to help either side? Was Kari light or dark in this?”
“She was trying to help Wanda, but we had no idea about her full powers until this all happened,” Wong replied, “so light. And I know that makes a difference.”
“Thank you. You do not want to fight against Kari when she is on a magic bender. Enya and I have…oh shite! I’ll need to get Enya here. If I can find her. She went time hopping. Or was that universe hopping? I’ll check my last note from her later. Enya is Kari’s sister-in-law. Sister of Galen Sun, Kari’s first husband. Oh, this could get to be all sorts of bad. But I am not calling Minerva or Dorian just yet. Thomas O‘Malley’s sister and her husband. And you have no idea about anyone I just talked about. Great. Shut up, Devnet. You are only making this worse.”
“And you are who in her life, exactly?” Darcy asked as she grabbed another cookie. “You write books. That’s all we know.”
“I grew up near Galway, and I met Kari and Enya at Camelot when Arthur was king. And for the record, Merlin was not a hottie like on the BBC show. Arthur was a snack, and Lancelot. Oh my gods. Yes. Wait. Why isn’t Kari here anyway? Don’t tell me she’s off in The Rift again?”
“She went to Louisiana to help one of our teammates,” Bruce started to explain as Dev shook her head and started to mutter under her breath. “Delacroix to be exact. Is that a problem?”
“As long as she doesn’t run afoul of the preternatural community there, things should be just peachy. Her brother Ewan got into a fuss once with some fellow vampires there, so who knows who is holding a grudge? But I keep getting this vibe that there is more to all of this than anyone is letting on. You had better spill the tea now. I can’t work with spotty intel.”
Dev grabbed a bottle of water before staring up at Cailleach again. “Can’t you just get Kari back here?”
“Does the name Bucky Barnes mean anything to you?” Darcy finally asked, “Or was he not a topic of conversation when you and Howard were friends, Devnet?”
“Barnes? She found him again? No. No. No. That is all sorts of bad. He damned near killed her the last time, and I am not going to try to patch her up again. And I don’t mean broken bones or a bruised shoulder. I mean mentally.”
“The files say they fought in Katowice, Poland,” Peter noted as Dev stomped over to where he and Ned were stationed. “Is that right? Is that the last place they fought? Because Bucky spent time in Wakanda with a bunch of doctors and scientists. He’s better now. They undid what HYDRA did. The brain washing, I mean.”
“Yes, Poland in 1991, and on the steps of the Winter Palace in the 1960s, and some other Cold War era hot spot. Havana. That was before the Winter Palace. Mid or late 1950s, I think. They nearly did each other in at least a half dozen times. Poland was the worst because she finally realized who he was. Star-crossed is not even the right word for those two. Cursed. Tortured. A disaster waiting to happen. I’m glad he got help. I didn’t know that. Peace to him, but they are still not a great match.”
Dev paced behind Peter and Ned and then stopped as she reached down to pick up a screwdriver on a desk next to them, flipping it in her hands as she tried to get her next thoughts in order.
“Did Loki give her back that stupid dagger? Please tell me that hasn’t popped up again. I hate that damned blade.”
“Dagger?” Wong asked as he looked over at Bruce. “What dagger?”
“It’s this ornate blade with emeralds on the hilt. The blade has gold filigree work on it. She and Barnes each got stabbed with it in that fight in Katowice. We never knew where it came from, but it brought her nothing but pain,” Dev explained as she stayed near Peter and Ned. “I wish I knew more. It isn’t from any group we know about. Not elven. Not demonic. Not a weapon of the Heavenly Warhost. Kari got very weird after that fight. Weird for Kari, I mean, and I’ve known her for over a thousand years. It was like part of her soul was sucked out. That isn’t even a decent explanation. I just wish we’d been able to see how it affected Barnes back then, but you couldn’t exactly roll up to a HYDRA base and ask how their top assassin was feeling.”
“Uh, no on the dagger,” Darcy said as she walked over toward Katy again, motioning for the book next to Chen. “Is it in this book you wrote?”
“No, that’s weapons before 1990,” Dev explained as she looked at the tome. “I never wrote a thing about weapons after that. I should have, but, as I said, Kari got weird, and Enya walked away, so I’ve been teaching and doing children’s books and romance novels ever since. I’ve been muttering for years that Kari let us down. Guess I need to order that ugly sweater in my size, too. I fucked up. She needed me, and I fucked it up royally. Do you guys have room for a slightly weepy professor of writing and antiquities on your squad? At least until this is over? Oh, and my dog Tyrone. I can’t leave him alone too long.”
“Mommy! A puppy!” Morgan squealed as she ran around Pepper.
“Tyrone is hardly a puppy,” Dev replied as she looked at Morgan. “I’d keep him leashed or in another room if needed. He’s sweet. He just looks and eats like a small horse.”
“Bruce, this is getting too complicated,” Wong noted as he started to do a head count of everyone there.
Darcy stopped noshing on food and gave Bruce one of her typical glares as she, too, started a head count. “Not if we break up into teams, guys. We may not get answers for weeks. Months even. But come on! We are The Avengers and Their Super Brainy Friends! What? Bad team name? I think it rocks.”
“You’ve been pretty quiet,” Katy said to Shang-Chi as he sat doing his own research on his father in the database. “Oh, dad stuff?”
“I figured I might as well since I have no idea about this Celtic stuff. But my dad may have known things since he was immortal. Can't hurt to look, right?”
Dev looked at the pair but didn’t engage them just yet. She had noticed the rings sticking out of the backpack earlier but had kept quiet about them. One problem at a time was all she needed at the moment.
“So, we make a pact to keep this quiet for now?” Pepper asked as she walked over to Bruce. “This feels wrong.”
“When Kari comes back from Delacroix, I’ll call you, Darcy and Wong. Then we can talk to her. I agree that this seems off, and our new friend seems to know more than she is letting on. I’m not shocked.”
“I just do not want to say things before Kari can say them herself. She really has told me precious little about The Destroyer there.”
Darcy spun on her heel and glared at Devnet.
“Wait. What now? The what?”
“Cailleach roughly translates to the crone creator and destroyer, and, depending on which aspect you reference, that is what you see. This one is The Destroyer. I thought that was pretty clear from the huge sword.”

Good for you, dude. You found your passion and went for it, and eventually used it to cripple the US government, but whatever.
