lets talk about joon hwi's "i'm grateful for her"
disclaimer: as always i might be making a stretch but this was just my interpretation. please ignore any typos or grammar mistakes. also credits to @cathartichaoss on a previous post of mine for bringing this up and it really got my thoughts rolling on this scene!!
okay i know we're making fun of joon hwi's "i owe her" bit but on a real note, i don't think that is meant in a we're just friends way like we're seeing it.
in most romance kdramas, the declarations of love are more explicit and often exaggerated, but what we have to remember with law school is that the drama isn't centered around romance. solhwi is a portrayal of a realistic friends to lovers arc, where their love is gradual and the shift from friends to lovers is blurred together. their relationship is growing in the background of the main plot, which is why we see their relationship develop through smaller moments (getting drunk together and sol revealing her issues with her grades, working side by side to solve a case, sol using joon hwi as a person to bounce ideas off of at the legal clinic) rather than grand gestures (by grand gestures i mean very explicit declarations of love, buying flowers, kissing in a very dramatic moment).
for those who have watched vincenzo and was a chayenzo shipper, you'll see that sol A and joon who's relationship grows very gradually throughout being there for each other, and i think most notably, this show doesn't show a point where "everything changed for the two of them" or one moment where the realized they loved each other (similar to vincenzo and cha-young's relationship). joon hwi has very gradually grown to like her presence and we can see that from their bickering friendship in ep 1 to now where he is on call for her at any time, putting up cctv for her and making hangover soup when one is drunk. much like a realistic friends to lovers, there is no one moment where they fall for each other, they've actually been falling for each other the whole time.
this brings me to the scene where sol B asks "why are you trying so hard to persuade me? why do you care so much about my roomie?" and he replied that he is "grateful for her." As we've seen from the previous episodes and even the events building up to this scene, Sol B isn't a very expressive girl. BUT she still cares about her friends in the study group, seen through her comforting ye-seul in the way she could and her standing up for sol A when her classmate calls her an ex-convict. in the same way sol A shield's her roommate, sol B does the same towards her. i believe that sol B knows that joon hwi is in love with sol A; pretending otherwise is a disservice to her intelligence and keen mind. her asking joon hwi why he's trying so hard is more than just a simple question. what she's asking here is "why are you in love with sol A? what is it about her that you like?" in a protective way. i interpreted it as her asking what his intentions with her roommate is. sol B is looking out for her roommate in her own way and asking why he likes her.
and joon hwi knows this, he understands what she's asking so he gives her an honest answer without his explicit confession. he tells her how grateful he is for her and it flashes to a scene that displays sol A's courage, her resilience, her loyalty, her compassion. she is making a risk because of him, and their study group. and the anger she expresses in assemblyman ko's involvement in the ruination of prosecutor seo, who joon hwi idolized and loved so much, connected with him. he's seeing that she cares so much for him and seeing her so passionate and loyal is the reason why he is grateful to her. you can see the camera shift to his expression during this scene and it looks as if he's truly seeing her for the very first time. this scene is showing the qualities that joon hwi loves the most about sol A, the characteristics that he admires and made him fall for her.
then of course we have the "i owe her. and i don't like owing people." i believe that this is conveying his shock at how much he actually cares for her. i believe before that moment he flashes back to, he assumes it more as a schoolboy crush, rather than him actually being in love with her. he's expressing that how he feels with sol A is new to him and the way he feels for her is different to anything he has felt before (therefore explaining why he says why he doesn't like it/he isn't comfortable with the realization). and sol B goes through with the justice mock trial with the understanding that joon hwi is in love with sol A and understanding that he is the right one for her roommate.
ultimately, solhwi nation, do not be afraid. we will be getting our endgame couple and having a good ending for them. they have so much development throughout the show, and this scene was a confirmation that there is something between them and an official confirmation of his feelings for her.

you know what keeps me up at night. it's the fact that joonhwi's only real friend in law school is kang sol a.
seo jiho may be his roommate, but because of joonhwi's relationship with seo byungju, jiho has always kept him at a distance and somehow always regarded him with suspicion. now that they're past that, joonhwi is helping jiho with his dad's case, but it's still a case. it's still, in a way, a favor.
we can say that he's friends with yeseul but that doesn't necessarily mean that they treat each other as equals. maybe it's the age gap, maybe it's the perceived difference in intellect, but yeseul looks up to him so that usually stops her from being casual around him.
from kang sol b's personality alone, we know that she barely talks to anyone unless it's a snappy remark. when it comes to joonhwi, her feelings towards him can maybe tame her a bit, but it holds her back from being her true self precisely because she has a crush on him. around joonhwi, she gets shy.
for seungjae, we never actually see the two properly interact - actually makes me wonder how or why joonhwi accepted him into the study group in the first place.
bokgi, we can argue that they're friends, sure, but we don't see enough interactions or hints that would make me believe that they were actual close friends. usually, it's bokgi and yebeom who are the inseparable duo, and we all know yebeom likes to talk his shit. honestly, the way yebeom talked about joonhwi behind his back when he was accused for killing his uncle ticked me off. it didn't help that bokgi just sat there and took it, particularly in ep 3 when they were talking about where joonhwi could have hid evidence and literally no one defended his honor just because he wasn't there.
no one, except kang sol a.
sometimes it makes me wonder if people in hankuk law school only find interest in han joonhwi just because he's a second round judicial exam passer. and sure, at the beginning, kang sol a was a victim of this too. when he was being sued for defamation, i remember her saying, "if you leave the school, what about my studies?" so okay, sure, let's establish at the beginning that she also is interested in him for his utility.
but then she finds a reason to defend him - for defamation, she understood that he did it for the public interest. in fact, right after she successfully defended her answer in front of the class, she looked longingly at joonhwi's empty seat, as if she wished joonhwi could have been there to see it for himself.
and then when yebeom talked behind his back while the police were interrogating him, what did kang sol a say? "stop talking about a guy behind his back. if you're dying to know, ask him."
and that is the basic respect that everyone forgets to give joonhwi just because he stopped being useful to them. but kang sol a, whether unconsciously or not, "pays him back" by being useful to him as well.
after joonhwi was confronted by his aunt, telling him to sign a contract denouncing his name on seo byungju's will, there was a moment where he sits alone, sullen, and kang sol a stares at him from afar. she knows words won't do much for him, so she takes matters into her own hands. she was the one who discovered that joonhwi's aunt manipulated the autopsy, because deep inside, she knew that joonhwi was someone she could trust.
i think that's when the shift in their relationship started. what once was "two people in the same study group" turned into an actual, meaningful friendship, cultivated by a silent promise that one would help the other out even if they didn't ask for it. because they were no longer expecting anything from each other, they could actually talk about things other than school.
and true enough, we see sol a let joonhwi into a part of her life that no one else at school knew about – her family. her home. and then eventually, their shared past. that bond goes beyond study group obligations, which is more than we can say for everyone else joonhwi has interacted with so far.
and most importantly, even though sol a is completely oblivious to the not-so-subtle glances that joonhwi sends her way, it's not like she doesn't have her own way of showing her fondness to him: it's the fact that she can rant to him (and often does so) that makes me think she likes him a lot more than she's aware of.
think back to episode 8: who else would she be so comfortable enough with to admit that she actually thought about stealing exam papers? or in episode 6 where she opens up about having a twin sister? or in the same episode, when he asks her if she's okay and she can honestly answer that she isn't? or in episode 9, where she runs to him about an idea that she stayed up all night thinking about? you can only talk about stuff like that with someone you're close to, someone you share a connection with, someone you trust.
not to mention, they always go to the trials together. it's a small gesture, but the fact that they are in each other's presence, is enough to make me believe that one seeks the other out to invite them in the first place.
and that's why, whether there are romantic undertones or not, i'm happy that han joonhwi has found a friend in kang sol a. not only are they same-aged friends (which is i think a big deal in their culture), but they're lucky enough to be on the same wavelength that they can count on each other when it matters the most, when things are serious, but also have a little (or a lot) of fun when things aren't so serious, when they need to be reminded that they have a life outside of law school.
and when you get to share a part of your life with someone, a part of yourself that you wouldn't necessarily share with just anyone else, well, isn't that just the makings of a soulmate?

oh, how we’ve grown.
prompted by an anon from my ask here!
notes: this was probably the fic that stumped me on so many occasions, since it was really bittersweet. editing, grammar and other mistakes will be taken responsible by me! it took me longer than expected and i’m not sure if everyone would be able to catch on how i interpreted the group’s futures and personalities! if anyone would like to know more, do dm me! as always, enjoy and thank you for the support and love!
original prompt: I think Joon Hwi and Sol A was already dating during their 3L (since Sol A looked so comfortable acting flirty and cute aroud Joon Hwi on their way to the old man's trial). Now I wonder what happen with them during time skip and by the ending, what stage of relationship they are in. Can you write a fic or headcanon ab that? Thank you! 🥰
words: 4373 words
it was finally the day of graduation.
joon hwi was beyond excited. he was nostalgic, sad and emotional, for sure. but after crying so many tears yesterday and the past week, he found it useless to cry any further. he lets the adrenaline set in for his new chapter lying ahead.
joon hwi was finally going to be a prosecutor.
his letter came in a few weeks after the bar exam. he counts himself lucky, being one of the students that helped to capture assemblyman ko, solve his uncle's murder, prove his professor's and his own innocence. all in his first year. it was no surprise that when he applied, they immediately wanted him. his grades were just the cherry on top to his stack of achievements. he was certainly overqualified for a guy who just passed the bar.
(well, he did pass the second round judicial exam.)
further than that, he was crowned valedictorian and was tasked to give a speech to his fellow batch mates. he had practiced his speech countless times, and he could recite it in his sleep by now. but he can’t quite place the feeling that he feels. his thoughts are all over and he can’t seem to keep his heart rate constant.
a knock on the door of his now empty dorm room distracts him from his thoughts. there, dressed in similar graduation robes, with long wavy brown hair is kang sol a, or to him, his kang sol. she walks in with a small smile on her face, but her smile fades away to a face of concern after studying his face. her eyes dart to the door, and she strides back to shut the door, giving him and her the privacy that he needs.
"what's troubling you?" she asks gently, taking his hand into hers. a quiet, simple gesture done by sol could soothe him so much. joon hwi is silent, not knowing why he’s so nervous. he’s done speeches and talked to crowds bigger than this. heck, he has testified for court. yet, the knot in his stomach refuses to cease.
“i don’t know… it’s nothing new, yet…” he trails off, avoiding his eyes with his girlfriend. his thoughts race through his head, but it leads back to his uncle, his samchoon, the man that brought him up: seo byungju.
“joon. joon, look at me.” sol brings a hand up to his cheek, gently raising it so it meets her eyes rather than the floor. joon hwi promised he wouldn’t be emotional today, yet he found his eyes glassy when he met sol’s eyes. as a tear slips, her fingers wipe it away gently.
“your uncle… he would be so proud of you to see the boy he raised achieve his dream.” sol says, a voice so quiet and soft, it seems to echo to joon hwi. she always knew what to say and always knew what was troubling him deep down, even if he denied it.
samchoon… are you proud of me?
“i’ll always be supporting you, like how your uncle did. when you’re on stage, if you feel intimidated, just look at my eyes, alright?” sol says, rubbing his cheek. he gives a small smile and nods slowly. taking his hand, sol intertwines it between her fingers, an action that he knows she only does when they are alone. an act so simple, yet his heart was so soothed by then.
joon hwi’s free hand reaches to the back of her head, as he lowers his slightly, so their forehead rest against each other. he breathes her perfume in, the one he bought for her a few months into their relationship, the one that she always wanted but could never buy. he takes slow breathes with her, her thumb rubbing his knuckle gently.
sol pulls away, much to joon hwi’s disappointment. he wanted her skin ship even more, just savouring her touch under his skin. sol notices his disappointment and only gives him a smile.
“they’re waiting for us. come, let’s go.” sol says softly, letting go of his hand after giving him a squeeze. he knows she hates being affectionate in public, even in front of their close friends. he gives her a quick peck on the top of her head before following behind her, walking to the lobby where they were.
“yah, hyung!” bokgi waved with enthusiasm, gathering the attention of the group. joonhwi maintains his composure and lets out a deep breath.
“nervous, hyung?” yebeom asks, his fingers fiddling.
“tch, it’s me. i’ll be fine.” joon hwi replies. it’s a half truth, now that sol is by his side.
“that’s why sol-noona had to find you, right?” bokgi teases, earning a nudge from yeseul. bokgi looks in mocked offence, but he recovers. everyone eyes at sol with prying eyes, the look of teasing on their faces. she takes this moment to shut her eyes, bring her hands up to face and shakes her head while sighing. these kids have literally nothing better to do than to just tease her and joon hwi.
“it’s time. you should go.” jiho says as he nods towards the lecture hall. the ceremony doesn’t start till half an hour later, but being valedictorian, he had preparations to do. they send joon hwi their last words of encouragement, but joon hwi was not going to leave unless he embarrassed his girlfriend a little longer.
his hand reaches up to sol’s hair, sweeping the curls behind her and cutely arranging her fringe the way she likes it. sol blushes as the group ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ in front of them. joon hwi knows she hates being so affectionate in front of her friends, but it’s always fun to tease. sol’s bright red and her face forms the smallest pout. joon hwi knows he’s achieved his mission.
“i’ll see you later.” he says with a wink and walks away, hearing the tease from yebeom and sol squeaking back.
when he’s on stage later, giving his speech, the words fall out of his mouth effortlessly. but the only thing that changes is that his eyes are fixed on the warm brown eyes of sol. as he addresses his late uncle at the end, he pauses and takes a deep breath. sol looks at him and gives him an encouraging nod. he ends his speech, eyes never once leaving her gaze, as the student body claps for him and he takes a bow.
one by one, the students are told to line up and take their certificates on stage from dean oh. she gives the seven graduates a knowing smile when they step on stage, knowing how much they’ve been through, after being swept up by their problems in their first and second years. even after all that, they managed to graduate with excellent results.
when they gather to take their photos (taken by seungjae, who decided to attend their graduation. it was the least he could do to show his support.), joon hwi swears he sees his uncle standing at the rock by the entrance of the school. he swears he sees the knowing silhouette of the tall man, grey hair and his metal spectacles. but what warms him the most is the smile of seo byung ju’s face and the slight nod.
yes, my boy. i’m so proud of you.
with that, joon hwi lets himself smile as seungjae snaps the camera.
(he doesn’t notice his blurred vision from his tears, but rather blames it on the sun hurting his eyes.)
-----
the group takes individual shots of themselves, even jiho and sol b are smiling when their photos are taken. sol doesn’t lose a chance to tease her roomie about her cute smile, one she only reserved for limited situations.
joon hwi watches as his friends spread out across the field to meet their family, sharing the good news of graduation and their new starting jobs. the smiles on the parent’s faces warms his heart deeply, somehow, even though he’s standing alone.
jiho was going to be a prosecutor with joon hwi in their new office. jiho could care less about joon hwi, but he can’t help but admit that it comforted him knowing a familiar face to be in his office in about two weeks. after all, they did share a room for three years.
sol b, against her mother’s wishes, has decided to take a gap year. her mother initially planned for her to continue her training, securing her route to being a judge. but sol b has had enough of her mother’s toxicity. as they went through therapy as a family, sol b had expressed as best as she could her need to discover what she wants for herself, not what her mother wants for her. what she will be doing in her gap year is still undecided, but she has chosen to move out for the time being.
yeseul was going to be in a firm that mostly did cases of women rights. while she initially was hesitant, bokgi encouraged her to take this opportunity, using her experience and her trial as a voice to the other victims. from time to time, she promised professor kim that she would come back to help at the legal clinic.
bokgi, on the other hand, had finally achieved his dream of being a human rights lawyer. while he was upset that he couldn’t work near yeseul, his spirits were immediately lifted when he heard that yebeom was going to be working just at the building across from him, another big law firm. (it was settled that as much as they went through, the bok-beom duo was never to be separated.)
sol, on the other hand, accepted her first job at attorney park’s firm, ironically. just when she had her first internship, she remembers screaming that she would never work with crooked lawyers like him. sol chose to work with him, as a return of the many favours she owes professor yang, starting with the one from high school. it was the most she could do for her role model.
joon hwi observes as he notices the proud faces of mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, and spots the few sightings of grandparents. somehow, he can’t help but feel a little lonely. his parents, the two individuals he had a short-lived relationship with had long passed. his uncle, the closest thing he had to a father had too passed. he can’t even guess where his aunts or other distant relatives are. his distant relatives probably don’t remember him, and neither does joon hwi.
a small body crashing into him breaks his flow of thoughts, as he looks down to see who it is. byeol wraps her arms around joon hwi’s waist happily and joon hwi breaks into laughter, realising who it is and lifting her before spinning her. she’s giggling in a mess as joon hwi spots sol’s mother and her walking to them.
“ah, hello, mrs kang.” joon hoi greets with formality. sol’s mother playfully smacks his arm with a smile, clearly embarrassed from such formality.
“ah! how many times have i said to not call me that, joon hwi-ah! at this point, you should just call me halmeoni!” she says, earning a big laugh from joon hwi and sol’s face burning with embarrassment.
“umma! don’t say things like this!” sol squeaks back. joon hwi only smiles and insists to call her ‘mrs kang’. byeol is getting introduced to their friends as bokgi and yebeom play a game of tag with her. sol’s mother stands by sol, her hand on her back and her other rubbing joon hwi’s back.
“joon hwi-ah, i hope you know how proud i am of you. sol has told me your own fair share of troubles. i know... you don’t have much of a mother figure in your life, but as your girlfriend’s mother, i hope you know i treat you like my own.” sol’s mother comments to him, holding both his hands in her warm ones. “more than just tutoring my daughter and helping her, you got through your troubles on your own.” joon hwi can only smile as he suppresses the emotions.
“your parents must be so glad to have such a righteous son.”
joon hwi, for a moment, is reminded of his limited memories with his parents. he doesn't remember much, being so young when they died. but how his mother would teach him the importance of kindness and compassion. his father would teach him to be strong, to stand up for the bullies that picked on the poorer kids in his preschool.
hearing his girlfriend’s mother tell him that, he couldn’t help but just pull her into a warm hug. sol joins in from behind, enveloping them with a warm that joon hwi was unable to explain. burying his face into the older woman’s hair, he lets himself be a child, as she rubs his back and holds him lovingly.
for the first time in his life, he finally experiences the warmth of a mother’s hug.
-----
as the field starts clearing out, the seven graduates and seungjae are left behind. their families have gone home, leaving them on the field, laid down in a circle, heads together. there was just silence, as they breathed in the air of hankuk university once more.
once more, as students.
once more, as graduates.
once more, before they step into their next phase.
“i’ll really miss you guys.” sol says quietly. yeseul, lying next to her, nods, although no one can see.
“we’ll meet up. especially you, seungjae-hyung! don’t be shy to ask for babysitters!” bokgi announces, earning a smile from seungjae. they slowly got up from the grass, dusting off the dirt and making their way back once more to the university lobby.
this was the place where these eight students met, all with different objectives and from all walks of life. yet, as different as they are, they got along and went through hell together, for each other. the short lived three years were filled with so many troubles, yet they pulled through together.
truly, they were more than friends. they were family.
seungjae took his leave first, being the family man he was. yebeom had to rush to a family event, and yeseul was going to catch a meal with bokgi. (yeseul promised bokgi to give him a chance once they graduated, and so she kept her promise.) jiho and solb were silently headed off in the same direction with their only conversation being “i’ll drop you off” by jiho and solb nodding. (joon hwi and sol only eye them, making mental notes to tease their ex-roommates.)
“are you going home?” joon hwi asks as sol grabs her bag. after graduating, sol made the decision to move home for the time being, to pay off her loans and support her family and ease her mother of some financial burden. joon hwi has opted many times to help, even wanting to pay off her loans. he had no loans, and after he sold his uncle’s mansion, he had a huge sum of money along with the inheritance. but sol couldn’t do it, she needed to work for this herself.
“yeah. i promised byeol i’ll help her with her work and catch a movie with her too. it’s been long since i could just spend time with her.” sol says. the lobby was now empty, with a few students walking in and out. sol looks at the lady justice statue, almost reminded of the many times she stared at it to remind herself of why she chose law. why she chose this profession.
together, they walk out, holding hands for the first time openly in their school. they were no longer students, and there was no point hiding from others anymore. she was just kang sol; he was just han joon hwi. no more ‘second round judicial pass’, no more ‘uncle killing nephew’, no more ‘klutz’, no more ‘twin failure’. just them.
joon hwi takes the bus to sol’s home, still in the ground floor apartment by an alley. sol’s mother invites him in, but he quickly declines, saying he needs to run some errands back at his own apartment. well, it wasn’t a lie. he just shifted in and he certainly had to clean and unpack.
when the apartment is packed with law books stacked neatly in his bookcase, the floor dusted and mopped, furniture clean and the fridge stocked with fresh groceries, he picks his phone to find seungjae sending the group their photos. there’s numerous comments on how yebeom is already missing us, and even jiho gives a ‘tch’ as a reply in the chat. he notices an unread text from his professor and opens the chat box.
you’re on my speed dial for cases. don’t ignore me.
joon hwi scoffs. he sets his phone aside as he flops back on his bed, for the first time processing all that has happened.
he can’t wait for the future.
(on his wall, he hangs a childhood photo of him and his uncle. on the frame, it has a tag with his daily reminder to judge fairly, and to make sure no one suffers unjustly.)
-----
the next few years for joonhwi are an adventure. his experience in the prosecution office is busy and stressful, but with jiho working just next door, he finds comfort in having him by his side. he battles many cases, slowly but surely, making a name for himself. instead of being known as the man that solved his uncle’s murder, he was now known as the prosecutor that never loses.
the study group kept in touch, meeting every two weeks for dinner at a barbecue place. somedays, they drank. on others, they just chatted and kept the plates of pork coming. seungjae did his best to join, but with his toddler kid, things were difficult.
seungjae took a year after his hearing to be with his wife, and take care of her during her pregnancy. he then decided to work as a forensic examiner. if he couldn't practice law and help people with it, the least he could was to uphold it and enforce it. his job was new and interesting, but he humbled himself to push through his training. he meets the group when they are dealing with criminal cases and helps them out as best he can.
the study group also took turns meeting his kid, and would always love babysitting. sol, as expected, was the best with chaotic duo bokgi and yebeom. instead of dinners some nights, they met at his house to catch up with him and spoil his kid. (seungjae couldn’t stop it. when the kid was born, he immediately gained 7 new aunts and uncles, ready to spoil and pamper him.)
his relationship with sol grew as well. working such long working days was tough, but they tried their best. sol would sometimes deliver homemade stews to his apartment and joon hwi would deliver jjajamyeon with her extra pickles on some nights. they met on the weekends, where they would just go to the park and take strolls or hole up in joon hwi’s apartment to work on their cases together.
sol was doing exceptionally well as a new attorney, almost successfully appealing to all her clients. her clients love her, not only for winning, but for always being so caring to them. many say she still keeps in contact with some clients, even after the case has been closed. while she thinks it is no big deal, sol’s career was climbing up. her loans were fully paid, and she has begun looking into apartments for her family and her to shift out of. that alley brought too much danger, especially with byeol growing into a teenager and her mother’s joints weakening.
sol b took that gap year to work at an administrative office at a law firm, before deciding to continue her law career to gain experience before moving forward to be a judge. throughout the gap year, she split her time on herself and therapy, as well as on her study group. she found herself wanting to be a judge, not for her mother, but for herself.
jiho and sol b also started dating each other shortly after they graduated, when joon hwi spotted sol b and jiho holding hands when he was leaving his office. they only told the group a few months later. but of course, everyone knew by then. ever since then, they caught sol b and jiho smiling a bit more, even if their smiles were just the slight curl at the corner of the lips.
yebeom was doing well in his law firm, handling mostly small cases, but he was content since he had a fun time handling the many cases and making visits to meet clients instead of being stuck in the office. bokgi was a human rights lawyer, with most of his cases about the discrimination of citizens in any aspect. he fought for the rights of those of different sexual orientations, races and religions and was extremely happy being able to do that.
yeseul was defending women of all walks of life, from their unequal treatment to domestic abuse. she was passionate and has made headlines a few times over the years when she chose to speak out about her story. she was well known in this area, being the first few lawyers to be a victim of domestic abuse and defending them. she also kept in contact with professor kim and made regular visits at the legal clinic.
bokgi and her only started dating a year after the graduated. bokgi respected the reasons and her space and yeseul found herself falling in love with him. after all, he stood by her all this while for the whole three years and have seen her at her worst. more than that, he treated her with respect and loved her equally, even after all that.
one day, as joon hwi and sol spent their day on the sofa at joon hwi’s apartment, joon hwi was nervous to ask this question. sol was busy looking at different apartment listings.
“sol, can i ask you something?” joon hwi asks, grabbing her hand. sol nodded, eyes still focussed on her screen.
“would you... would you want to move in with me?” sol’s hand stops scrolling as the words sink in and she slowly faces her boyfriend.
“i... i don’t know. i mean, byeol and umma will be left alone, right?” sol says, her voice quiet and soft.
“we can live near them. i think the lease of the apartment is ending soon, anyways.” joon squeezes her hand.
“but... i don’t know if i have enough money to get an apartment for them and us. joon, i really want to, i really do. but...” sol’s eyes are uncertain, and joon hwi sees her eyes guilty, almost like she feels bad for saying that.
“we can get the apartment in instalments. you can buy one for your mom and byeol first and we will slowly pay for ours.” he says. placing a finger under her chin, he raises it so her eyes meet hers. “sol, they are going to be alright on their own.”
sol nods her head and reaches up to pull her boyfriend’s face to hers, letting their lips connect. his lips are soft against hers, as she taste the slight coffee taste from his mug. it’s almost frenzy, from what started as a simple kiss lead to a fight for dominance. without knowing, sol is straddling joon hwi, as his hands pull back her long hair.
when they pull away, he feels her hot breath on his face, and her face burning red, embarrassed at how she acted.
“should we get back to looking at apartments?” joon hwi asks, a small smile on his face, ultimately an act of tease to her. she quickly nods and climbs off of him as they look at apartments together. joon hwi gives her a knowing smirk, before sol swats his arm and they resume scrolling.
and it was true, when professor yang had him on speed dial.
he was just about to leave for a coffee and bother jiho for a bit at his office one day, when a call came in from professor yang.
“han joon hwi.”
“professor.”
“you’re needed, now. meet me at hankuk university in thirty minutes.” and the call disengages. it was a habit of his professor’s, to give blunt replies and just cut off without saying goodbye. he slips on his blazer and grabs his briefcase before picking up the call from sol instinctively. so much for listening to orders, even though he wasn’t a student anymore.
“called you too?” he asks once he picks up, scribbling on a post it note, noting his early leave from the office.
“what else? gosh, i really hate it when he hangs up like that.” sol replies, a twinge of annoyance in her voice.
“i’ll pick you.” joon hwi says, as he leaves his office, then knocks on jiho’s door. jiho’s head pops up from his laptop, before nodding in acknowledgement.
“no, don’t bother. i’ve already caught the train.” sol replies and joon hwi hears the familiar beeping of train doors. sol knows she’s got to hang up soon, if she doesn’t want to irritate other commenters on the train.
“love you.” he says back. sol’s face is blushing red, but she’s lucky everyone on the train was busy on their phone.
“i love you too.” she whispers before hanging up and storing her phone away in her handbag.
when they meet at the doors of hankuk university each time they are called in for a case, they can’t help but to think of how far they’ve come. sol, the girl with bad grades and on a scholarship. joon hwi, the top student with a hidden secret. yet in a matter of years, they blossomed together with their friends on their routes.
professor yang is by the lady justice statue, and when he looks up to see his students stroll in with authority and confidence, he gives a knowing smile.
shall we start?

Fool in a one man show
Summary: Joonhwi prided himself in being calm and collected. Always logical, never emotional. Which is why his friends teasing took him by surprise, because he wasn’t obvious at all with his feelings for Kang Sol, or was he?
Or: Joonhwi being a jealous mess and Bokgi and Yebeom being a comedic duo that doesn’t know how or when to shut up.
A/N:this is a 1.3k fic of pure self indulgence, born from a conversation between @ohcoolnice, @sxfik and I, in which we called Joonhwi "Han Joon Whipped". So kudos to you besties for giving me the idea.
Also, if you want to make this 10x better, I'd recommend you listen to No Way! from the Law School OST (here) and have a laugh just like I did while writing.
Part 2 | Masterlist | AO3
-------------------------
It had all started when Joonhwi made the mistake of teasing Sol in front of Bokgi, that one morning when he was being relentless with her about the sunbae incident.
“What’s up with you two?” he had asked. And maybe not giving him an answer was the worst decision Joonhwi had made, because the younger boy wasn’t the brightest, but his persistence would take him places.
And of course, if Bokgi was after something, Yebeom was right beside him.
Which inevitably takes us to the fatidic moment where Joonhwi not only found out the horrific news that Sol was skipping lunch because she was on a date, but also first heard how his friends had been calling him behind his back for a while now: Han Joon Whipped.
* * * * * * *
Joonhwi could hear his friends talking in hushed voices as he entered the copy room. Weird, he thought. When they met up for lunch you could usually hear the group’s voices – mostly Bokgi, Yebeom and Sol’s bickering – from the corridor outside of the office.
So, he tried to make as little noise as possible as he closed the door behind him. He wanted to listen in to their conversation and maybe give them a scare when he turned around the corner.
“Ya! What do you mean Sol noona is on a date?!” Bokgi’s voice sounded as incredulous as he felt hearing him.
His Kang Sol was on a date?! But how did she find time to go on a date? Didn’t they all have to study for an upcoming exam? Well, maybe it was Kang Sol B- Joonhwi froze in his place as his mind started whirling with questions.
“I mean, it’s not an actual date, but yes. He’s the guy who sits right behind us in our class- I can’t remember his name but unnie said he’s cute” he frowned at Yeseul’s answer.
It was most definitely his Kang Sol, on a “date”, with someone else. But since when did she find someone cute? He had never heard Sol referring to someone as being cute other than her sister Byeol…
“She even asked if she could borrow one of my blazers last night, she seemed excited…” SolB’s addition made everyone stay momentarily silent.
“Oh! I remember who he is now!” Bokgi exclaimed “he’s the guy that’s always keeping noona behind when we’ve waited for you after class, isn’t he?”
“Him?” Yebeom added with mirth in his voice “the one who’s scared of our Joon Whipped hyung?”
He’s scared of- wait, what did Yebeom say? Joonhwi perked up his head at the nickname for him and right away what sounded like a precedent book smacking against something resounded through the copy room. And then-
“Ya! Seo Jiho!” Yebeom’s pained whine reached his ears “What’s with you hitting people?!”
“We’ve told you not to call hyung that aloud” Jiho scolded “what if he hears you?”
And Joonhwi took that as his cue to turn the corner and appear in front of his friends. There was a chorus of yelps and gasps – minus SolB who just gave him her signature piercing stare – and everyone looked at him like kids caught stealing candy. And they stood frozen like that for what seem like an eternity.
“How much did you hear, oppa?” “You heard everything, didn’t you?” Yeseul and SolB’s questions overlapped.
He avoided their questions and tried to appear as nonchalant as possible when he asked, “Is Sol coming to study later on? Her date isn’t taking her whole afternoon, is it?”
His answer were five pairs of eyes fixated on him and suddenly he felt very small as he sat down at his usual spot by the end of the table. Bokgi and Yebeom were grinning from ear to ear, Yeseul was smiling and Jiho threw his head back as he sighed. SolB’s eyes somehow said you deserve what’s coming your way.
“What?”
Jiho turned his head to look at him “Hyung, please don’t embarrass yourself by talking any further”
“I don’t know what you mean” he kept trying to maintain a cool demeanor as he reached across the table to pick some pickles to put on his plate.
“Hyung, stop trying to fool us” Yebeom kept eerily grinning at him “we all know you’re whipped for Sol noona and you just proved it to us”
Joonhwi dropped his chopsticks, splashing his soup everywhere as he half sputtered/half choked with the noodles he had just put in his mouth. Jiho sympathetically patted his back as he tried to regain his composure.
Once he was able to breathe again, he pondered his options: he could try to play dumb and get teased or he could admit the truth… and still get teased. And since the first option sounded too much like lying and he was no liar, he was left with no choice but to confess.
“Am I that obvi- yeah, okay, wrong question” he backtracked when he saw SolB’s looking at him with an arched eyebrow “since when do you know?”
“Wait, Joonhwi-ah, you’re not denying you have feelings for her?” Yebeom gaped at him, honorifics forgotten.
“Are you answering my question?”
“I’ve known something was up since you were teasing noona that one morning about her remembering something” Bokgi shrugged “I just silently observed you afterwards… but do tell, hyung, did something happen between you two around that time?”
Yeseul smacked his arm and Jiho tskedat him. Joonhwi cleared his throat and ignored Bokgi’s question.
“So, uh- who is… who is Sol-ah on a date with?” he could feel his ears go warm.
“Why, are you jealous hyung?” Jiho pushed his glasses up his nose with the corner of his mouth turned slightly upwards.
Joonhwi fully smirked at him, mischievousness present of his face “out of all people, you’re the one I have more leverage against roomie… are you sure you want to tease me?”
“Is that a threat?” Jiho arched an eyebrow.
“No no, just merely stating facts over here” Joonhwi gave him an innocent smile “you talk an awful lot while you sleep”
“That makes two of us, hyung”
“Ya! Don’t you know it’s disrespectful to talk about something secret in front of other people if you don’t share?” Yebeom whined.
Joonhwi scoffed although he wasn’t angry “it is equally disrespectful to talk about someone and give them nicknames behind their back”
“Touché”
They finished what was left of their lunch in silence. After that they divided what they needed to revise for their upcoming exam and diligently got to work in small groups, purposefully leaving Joonhwi on his own so he could work with Sol once she decided to show up to their study session.
A few hours went by and Joonhwi couldn’t focus on what he had to do anymore. Sol hadn’t show up and his mind started running wild with thoughts about his Kang Sol doing… things, with another guy. Get a grip, he thought, it is none of your business if she- if she…
He had sighed for the umpteenth time when Yeseul addressed him “Oppa, it wasn’t an actual date- not a romantic one anyways. He’s unnie’s partner for our class project, the professor randomly paired us up. Sol unnie agreed to grab something to eat with him so they could discuss the project after”
“Besides, he’s scared of you, hyung” Bokgi added “you have nothing to worry about”
“Scared of me?” his eyebrows shot up in surprise “Why would he fear me?”
“Hyung, Sol noona is the only one who hasn’t realised-”
“Ya! Jo Yebeom!” Sol’s sudden appearance next to Joonhwi made everyone jump on their seats “haven’t I told you it’s rude to talk about people behind their backs?”

i came in from the outside, burnt out from the joyride
this was born out of a conversation with @akinosakiya, so all credits go to her >.<
chapter i | chapter 2 (coming soon)
Han Joon Hwi and Kang Sol, years after graduation. post-canon fix it, idiots to lovers.
ao3
a/n : i got this idea as i feverishly dm'd my friend about a solhwi prompt,,, i took it too far i think >.<
please tell me if you like it!!
a/n: title taken from Hozier's Almost (sweet music) which i recommend while reading this.
chapter 1: you and i are lovers in the dark
There has got to be another way of doing this. I can’t be doing this all my life.
“You know,” the words from Yeseul makes her look up, “you didn’t have to do this to yourself. You could have not taken the case, eonni. I told you not to take the case.”
Sol doesn’t say anything, just hangs her head in shame. The soju burns as she tips her head back, draining the last dregs of it, “I knew I shouldn’t have asked you for help. You’re being insufferable now that you’re dating Bok-gi.”
Yeseul laughs, reaching for the soda can, “eonni, I think you’re thinking about it too much.”
“I am, aren’t I?” she looks at the other girl, clearly panicked, “does it show? Oh, it shows, doesn’t it? Oh, what am I going to do—”
“Ah, noona, you shouldn’t have taken this case on, then,” Bok-gi says as he enters the room and take in the sight of a dishevelled Sol and a grinning Yeseul, “oh, Yeseul noona, I was looking all over for you!”
Sol scowls, “haven’t the two of you been dating forever? Why do you still have the honorific? And for your information, I took the case before I knew it was going to be him that I would have to go up against.”
Bok-gi looks affronted, and Yeseul comes to her boyfriend’s rescue, “ah, I like it, eonni.”
“Of course, you like it, you’re just as gone for him as he is,” she grumbles, “so, Bok-gi, Yeseul’s been telling you everything now, has she?”
“Ah, eonni, leave him out of it,” Yeseul soothes her, rubbing circles into her back, “do you want me to take the case? Instead of you—”
“The client won’t agree on it,” Sol whines, “and just when I thought I had got rid of him.”
“Rid of who?” so Bok-gi doesn’t know, Sol notes with some amount of pleasure, good. At least Yeseul didn’t tell him about the fact that—
“Oh, eonni might have to work with Joon-hwi oppa,” Yeseul chirps, looking entirely too pleased for Sol’s liking, “she’s the public defender for Joon-hwi oppa’s case.”
“The attempted murder one?” Bok-gi sounds as perplexed as Sol is, “but I thought hyung only dealt with financial cases, what happened? Didn’t you say you had some other prosecutor to deal with, noona?”
Sol groans, “apparently he’s taking criminal cases too, and the first one he chose to take was mine,” she stands up, “can’t I ever get rid of him?”
Yeseul blinks, “why did you have to get rid of him in the first place?”
Sol groans, sitting down on the chair with a thump. This was becoming a frighteningly regular occurrence, groaning at the mere mention of his name, “I told you, you wouldn’t understand.”
“You sound like a sixteen-year-old right now, noona,” Bok-gi giggles, and she scowls at him. How dare they find happiness in my misery. Just because she loved them didn’t mean she would put up with everything that they did.
Liar. You’ll always put up with whatever they do.
Wait, why did that sound like him? Did he finally manage to get inside her head?
No. no, calm down, Kang Sol. Joon-Hwi is not inside your brain. Your brain is filled with statutes of law, precedents, your grocery list, the things you need to buy Byeol for her birthday—
You have too many things on your mind.
Ah, fuck.
She stands up again, taking a look at Bok-gi and Yeseul’s surprised faces, and sits back down, “never mind. It’s just him. how bad could it be? We just lost touch over the years, and I specifically made sure to not keep in touch with him after we graduated—I’m going to die, Yeseul-ah.”
“No, eonni, you won’t,” Yeseul props her up gently, pushing the bowl of bibimbap towards her, “at least eat something before you cry.”
“No, you’re right,” Bok-gi agrees, although Sol knows he’s laughing at her internally, the little shit, “it’s wrong to cry and not eat. I’ll be dehydrated.”
The food tastes bland in her mouth, although she knows she’s made it spicy, but Sol works her way through it with tears in her eyes (she passes it off as due to the spice) and promptly starts sobbing again, lamenting her crappy life.
“Eonni, the trial isn’t until next month, you have enough time to prepare,” Yeseul tries to placate her, but it only increases the volume of her groans.  A whole month spent dreading the presence of Han Joon-Hwi as she prepared for the trial. “You’ll win it, right?”
There. That was what had been bugging her. The fact that he hadn’t lost a single case since he’d become prosecutor. It isn’t like she hadn’t expected this from him, coming first in her class, but—
“Is this even fair?” she wails, “the attempted murder case doesn’t even have to have him as the prosecutor, it is going to be easy for me to win, the client was framed, and there is no evidence—”
“Noona,” Bok-gi peers at her, his eyes going wide, “you’re scared, aren’t you?”
“Ah, it isn’t like that!” she tries to defend herself. But Yeseul just stares, “fine. You caught me. I’m scared of losing to him, he hasn’t even lost a single case since he made prosecutor, he’s on his way to becoming head prosecutor in less than a decade, and I’m—I’m barely surviving as it is, so why did Attorney Geun-Tae give this case to me?”
Both Bok-gi and Yeseul look shocked, and Sol isn’t surprised. They should be. She was the one who cut off contact with Joon-Hwi after graduation, claiming he didn’t need her to weigh him down, and she was the person who did everything without a single glance backwards, so why was she being so defensive? “It’s not like I don’t want to whine all the fucking time, it’s just that—”
“Whoa, noona swears a lot when it comes to Joon-Hwi hyung, who knew.” Bok-gi says, clapping a hand over his mouth, “have you always been this way, or did this just happen after you found out that you were going up against him?”
Sol scowls, “you’ve been trying to act cute, don’t try that with me, Min Bok-gi.”
Yeseul nods at Bok-gi. Sol scowls again. Traitor.
--
The truth is, she should have known this was coming. Their field doesn’t leave much for anonymity, and even if it did, why did she think it would be so easy to avoid Joon-Hwi? The boy—sorry, man, she supposes she should give him at least that much, they were both in their thirties now—the man was everywhere, the newest rising star in the prosecution. Even her boss, the clueless Park Geun-Tae knew about it, and had requested her to work in a case against him. her, the person who barely passed her law school course at Hankuk. Who has a sister far smarter than her, better than her at all aspects, who really isn’t cut out to be in this profession, something which she’s heard all too often from everyone, and all she wants to do is yell I know, I know, she knows it all.
Which is why, when Han Joon-Hwi approached her after the graduation ceremony, a determined look on his face, she dreaded the words that would come out of his mouth, and instead chose to flee. In retrospect, it wasn’t the best decision, but Kang Sol A isn’t known for making the best decisions.
She still lives with her mother and Byeol in that same house, where Joon had once installed a CCTV camera, which Lee Man-Ho had broken with a well-aimed rock, but the camera is still there, and while Byeol is in middle school now, a big girl, who doesn’t like Sol picking her up from school every day and who is already getting into trouble with that big mouth of hers, and certainly doesn’t need protecting, the camera is still there, and every once in a while, she likes to take a look at it, sipping beer after a long day at work. It’s obviously dysfunctional, but she likes to imagine that Joon-Hwi still takes a look at the camera feed, doing whatever “top secret” things he did.
She sighs, opening the door to their home. I have work to do if I need to beat Joon-Hwi.
--
“Why was I assigned to this case?” Joon-Hwi asks, surprise evident on his face, “I usually take financial dispute cases, this is an attempted murder, and the evidence doesn’t even look solid. Why am I being given this?”
He’s speaking to the wall in his office, and his paralegals are out on break, but he feels as though he should at least vent about this to something, if not someone. He’s supposed to be a star prosecutor, someone who hasn’t lost a single case since they stepped foot into the District Prosecutor’s office. And it’s true, he hasn’t lost a single case since he began working here, spurred on by a desire to both step out from under his uncle’s shadow and to prove himself.
The cases he has handled until now, have all been financial, catching the people who use money to get their way in the world, much like Ko Hyeong-Su, people so entitled to the world that they didn’t consider the rest of them as human beings. He liked bring them down to their level. Hell, he loved it.
But his specialty is not criminal law, and that too, a case that would be difficult for him to win, given that there was very little evidence and whatever he had, would never fly in a court of law. He’s kind of pissed at Prosecutor Lee for giving him the case. No, scratch that, he is pissed at Lee for giving him the case.
Defending lawyer—
Defending lawyer, Kang Sol.
Could it be?
He turns to his computer, and contemplates for a second if he should ask the police officer about the defending counsel, but decides against it. I don’t want to seem like a fool. Which—is correct. He is a fool.
So, he calls up the person who had the case before him, Prosecutor Shin, and tries not to hide the excitement in his words when he asks, “did you meet the defence counsel when you arrested the defendant, Prosecutor?”
“She didn’t have one,” the prosecutor replies, voice scratchy, and he wonders of he did the right thing by disturbing someone who was in the hospital, “we’ve indicted her, but the defence counsel was changed at the last moment, something about the public defender dropping the case. Her new counsel is some young lawyer, although she has a lot of experience.”
A lot of experience. “A lot of experience?”
“Yes,” the voice on the other side cracks, and there’s some commotion in the background, “I remember meeting her in the courthouse once. People call her crazy, the lengths she goes to defend her clients are insane. She’s a good egg though, doesn’t take on cases that she doesn’t like.”
“Hmm, thank you, Prosecutor,” he mumbles, hanging up the phone. So that’s what you’ve been doing all this time, Kang Sol. how long has it been, four-five years? And we’ve never met once, impressive.
He’s suddenly very excited for the initial hearing, even if he knows its going to be nearly impossible to win. But at least he can see her for the first time in years, even if its on the opposite side in a court of law. At least he has that.
“You’re being stupid,” Jiho says without much in the way of context, but Joon knows what he’s talking about, “you had to take a case just to meet her? A case you are most likely going to lose? What kind of person does that?”
Joon-Hwi rolls his eyes. Jiho was a good man, but sometimes, he really didn’t know the reason behind things. Or to be more specific, why Joon-Hwi did some things. Still, it was understandable as to why he would behave like this. Neither of them has had any connections with each other over the past five years, missing each other by mere moments at times, and yet, he’s still enamoured by her memory, of the way she used to look at her law books and the way she used to stick her highlighters in her hair, her triumphant smile after she answered something correctly; he remembers everything, and he gets nostalgic sometimes, but such is human nature, one supposes.
“It’s been five years, hyung,” Jiho mutters, pushing the bowl of soup towards him, “isn’t it time you gave up on Sol noona?”
He raises an eyebrow, “I didn’t think you addressed anyone as noona.”
Jiho shrugs, “she’s older than me, so it’s only right. And I did work with her on a case about three—two years ago, and she’s really become good. Or is it all the experience that she has had now, working as a partner at Attorney Park Geun-Tae’s firm, which is unheard of, at her age, but she’s far more competent than him—”
He’s talking, but Joon-Hwi doesn’t register anything anymore, “you’ve worked with her? Together?”
“Hmm?” Jiho mumbles, thrown off his track, “yes, I literally just said that I did, what are you thinking about?”
“No. no, back up a little,” he insists, and Jiho’s confused expression clears when he realises what exactly is Joon-Hwi implying.
“Really? You’re jealous over the fact that I worked with Sol noona? That’s how petty you’ve become now, hyung?” Jiho rolls his eyes, and Joon has the incessant need to just—bury his face in his hands, “you could just give her a call, you know.”
He glares. Jiho nods, “guess not,” and resumes eating. He takes another look at the case file, and sets it down, proceeding to shove food into his mouth. The Japanese restaurant has good food, he does agree, but nothing beats eating too-hot ramyeon at three in the morning with your best friend after you’ve finished reviewing three lectures’ worth of notes together. Crap. He still remembers her as his best friend, even though they haven't had any contact over the past years now. Pathetic.
But self-deprecation isn’t his forte, and he shakes his head at Jiho, who’s determinedly eating, “how’s Sol B doing? Isn’t she going to be a judge?”
“She’s still practicing,” Jiho replies, “her mother wants her to be a judge, although I don’t think Sol wants to do it. She’s happy being a legal scholar. Wants to become a professor at Hankuk later on, if the constitutional law position opens up.” His face has a curiously fond look when he’s talking about her, Joon notices, or perhaps it’s a trick of the light, because Jiho straightens up, “who gave you the case, though?”
“My superior sent it to me because the prosecutor in charge had fallen ill, and had to be taken to the hospital,” Joon-Hwi replies, “it isn’t east for me to win this one, even though—”
“Even though you’ve never lost a single case?” Bok-Gi’s voice almost makes the two of them jump, and Jiho sends a well-aimed smack his way, “so you’re taking noona’s case, are you, hyung?”
Jiho snorts, “he’s losing sleep here.”
“When did I say I was losing sleep?” Joon-Hwi begins to say indignantly, but Bok-gi is still grinning as he slides in beside Jiho, “who told you that, Seo Jiho?”
Jiho doesn’t say anything, so Bok-Gi fills in for him, “hyung, you look terrible. Haven’t you been eating properly?”
Joon-Hwi squints at the other boy, how did he know I haven’t been sleeping well? Does it show on my face? Is it that bad?
“It is that bad, hyung,” Jiho pipes up, “you look like death warmed over.”
“It isn’t that bad, honestly,” Bok-gi says, and promptly shuts up under Jiho’s glare, “jeez, all right, all right, he looks bad. Very bad. Bad with a capital B.”
Joon-Hwi groans. He was supposed to have been handling another financial scam by this time, but he’s now talking to two of his classmates, preparing for a case that he was sure of losing, just to see the girl of his dreams.
Pathetic.
--
It had been two weeks since she had found out that Han Joon-Hwi was going to be the prosecutor for her newly-assigned case, and Sol already felt like she was going to drown amidst a sea of precedents, case studies, and more cases that she needed to read just once, in order to keep her client from getting a guilty verdict. She would have to work harder if she needed to beat him, and had even contemplated asking Professor Yang for help, not that the man would do anything to make her life any easier.
Instead, she settles for the next best thing, calls over Sol B and Yeseul for help, and while Sol B grumbles, Yeseul agrees enthusiastically, even offering to bring over Bok-gi for an extra pair of eyes. Not one to be outdone in anything, Sol B offered to bring over Jiho, who grumbled more than Sol B (if that was possible), but agreed to come along nevertheless, and they all sat in her tiny living room, looking as though they had lived there all their lives, and had helped her with the case, although the boys were more interested in devising ways to make Joon-Hwi lose, as Jiho put it, “noona is our best bet, and he owes me food if he loses.” No one could argue with that, honestly.
Except she feels like drowning, and the trial was only two weeks away.
Stupid Joon-Hwi. Why did he have to take my case? Why couldn’t he just remain in civil law? Why did he have to do this? Why, why, why?
She knew that she was being irrational. He didn’t have much control over the cases he was assigned to, and given the fact that the prosecutor in charge had been admitted to the hospital, she doesn’t think he had any sort of control over what cases he would be assigned to. Still.
You’re being irrational now, a voice that sounds surprisingly like Professor Yang’s pipes up in her mind, you’re being distracted right now, Kang Sol. You won’t win if you’re distracted.
Right. She turns back to her papers, trying her best to push the thoughts out of her mind.
I can’t be distracted.
He was distracted.
It wasn’t his fault, perhaps, but Joon-Hwi feels guilty nevertheless, especially as he stares at his two paralegals who are stuck alongside him, working into the night.
He’s been staring at the same picture for the past thirty minutes. In his mind, it qualifies as work, but what sort, he isn’t sure. It’s a picture from their graduation day, the seven of them (Seung-Jae hyung was behind the camera) and Professors Kim and Yang, Yangcrates even had a rare smile, something which he hadn’t ever imagined witnessing, at least not sober. Him with his arm around Jiho, who clearly didn’t want to be dragged into a conversation then, his attention focused on someone else. Sol B, staring straight into the camera, grinning ear to ear. Bok-gi and Ye-beom, the latter gesticulating wildly and Bok-gi just laughing at him, Yeseul with her head thrown back in laughter, and Sol—Sol was radiant, (he laughs at that, radiant, the Greek meaning fitting her like a glove, Sol, the Sun) the way she smiled at the camera, her hand held up in a peace sign. It was an imperfect picture, and he has the final, proper version hung on his living room wall, but it’s the warmest picture he has ever been in.
The trial is the next day, and he should be getting some sleep, but he finds himself staying awake even after his two paralegals have gone home, apologising profusely for leaving him alone, and then he takes out his phone, which has been blowing up with messages from Bok-gi and Jiho, asking to come out with them for dinner. He knows it’s a bad idea, that they would try and get him drunk, or worse, that he would voluntarily get drunk, and showing up hungover at the courthouse isn’t a great idea.
Except… he really wants to do so. It’s like he’s back in university again, trying to find ways to rile Kang Sol up, teasing her, to revel in the way she would get angry with him for cutting short her study times, even though she should have been in bed three hours prior. She would always look at him with that strange sort of expression in her eyes, Joon-Hwi remembers, as if she couldn’t decide whether to hit him or to just kiss him and shut him up.
His phone pings, and it’s a text from Jiho, telling him that hyung, do you want to come out for dinner? Sol’s buying.
He really shouldn’t. even if it had taken him a moment to know which Kang Sol Jiho had been talking about and even then, he couldn’t stop his heart from skipping a beat at the mention of her name, he shouldn’t.
Oi, Han Joon-Hwi, aren’t you a little too old and a little too responsible to be drinking before the day of an important trial?
The voice in his head sounds suspiciously like Sol, not Sol B—Sol A, although he doesn’t know how anyone could confuse themselves between the two—they were as different as light and day, and the one on his mind was not the one who was offering to buy him drinks and dinner. He sighs, texting Jiho a quick apology before he heads out of the office. He needs to be alone tonight, trying to get his thoughts in order before he faced Kang Sol in the courthouse the next day.
Even though he’s sure to lose, he just might win.

Sol A : “Professor did you get my report on the murder case?”
Yangcrates : “Yeah. Looked it over. Nice work.”
Sol A : “Good. Thanks Dad.”
*silent pause*
Sol A : “Why is everyone staring at me?”
Sol B : “You just called Professor Yang ‘Dad’.”
Sol A : “What? No, I didn’t.”
Yangcrates : “Do you see me as a father figure, Kang Sol A?”
Sol A : “If anything I see you as a “bother” figure ‘cause you’re always bothering me.”
Han Joon Hwi : “Sunbae! Show your father some respect.”
Sol A : *Already pulling her hair* “I didn’t call him dad.”
Yangcrates : “No No Sol A. I take it as a compliment. You wanna talk about it later over a bowl of Jajangmyeon?”
Sol A : *silently* “I’d like that.”

suspicious partner au, fake dating, roommates au of solhwi :)
chapter summary: the news of ji ho's state pushes the team to a standstill, but it's the news that will follow that will truly test the breaking point.
a/n: after 7 months, this is the third chapter of peace is not known to man. it's been an incredibly long time since i've updated and i sincerely apologize for that. in this time, quite a lot has happened in my life! i'm now in college, in second semester, and holy shit it's a brand new year! this chapter took a lot of time for me to write, writers block combined with a busy schedule and zero focusing ability! but without further adieu...
There are moments in life when time seems to be going too slow. Each moment feels like you're wading through an ocean of molasses, your movements lethargic and slow. Every second stretches out, the future not coming fast enough. Yet, your mind is still sharp and bright, willing your body to propel itself forward against the waves crashing against you.
This was one of those moments, as Joon hwi watched as Ji ho's chest rise and fall, his breathing in tandem with the assortment of beeps and noises filling the hospital room. His vision felt sluggish and it felt like the day his former roommate could gain conscious wouldn't come soon enough. Everywhere he looked, there wires and tubes attached to the man lying on the bed, the red and blue colors flashing on the monitors monitoring every second of Ji ho's condition.
"It's a good thing you brought him in as soon as possible," the doctor had said to them, the group almost clinging onto each other in front of the ER. "He experienced a lot of blood loss. If you were a few more minutes late, the operation would have been much harder. He's in a more stable condition now, but might take a while to gain consciousness."
It's been two days since then, as they all took shifts, watching their dear coworker and friend as he lay in the hospital. Each of them would shuffle in, their suit crinkled and hair disheveled as they took turns watching over him.
Despite their firm still being swamped with cases, none of them could focus on anything except Ji ho's condition. More often than not, they would all bring their stacks of case files to the private room, working as they monitored his condition. Everywhere you looked you could see papers and case files, the room as much of a mess as they were. It was only on Joon Hwi's instance that any of them showered or went home to take a break.
Of course, none of this would get through to Kang Sol B. She insisted on staying by his side, snapping at anyone who suggested she leave to take a break. After Sol's incessant pestering, she'd go home but soon enough, the girl would be back, ready to stay by Ji ho's side. Eventually they just gave up, letting the girl sit by her side.
To any outsider, the calm, cold demeanored girl didn't look any different but they all knew better. Her eyes were red rimmed, shifting to the man laying in the bed at any shift in breathing or any discomfort. Her voice didn't hold the same strength anymore, her words had no bite to it. Her hands trembled in her lap, constantly scrubbing at each other, trying to clean themselves off despite not a speck of dust in sight.
Ji ho had left Sol late at the office that fateful day, after getting an apparent phone call that Lee Man Ho was spotted in an abandoned corner of the city. There was construction everywhere in the area, so it was a plausible hiding site for their culprit. Despite her insistence to wait for someone else to go with him or at least take her with him, he wouldn't relent, insisting that he had to follow this lead to prove some hunch he had, before it ended up in a dead end. Stil, he promised her he would call as soon as he was at the site, or at least after he’d checked the place out.
An hour passed, then two. Sol B had patiently waited but after not receiving a phone call from him, she took matters into her own hands, driving herself towards the construction site. After searching every alleyway and street, she found him, lying against the corner of an unfinished wall.
By the time Joon hwi and Sol A reached the hospital, Sol B was still sitting against the wall of the ER, her gaze blank as blood soaked up to her elbows. Her white shirt was smeared with his blood, and she was completely unresponsive to any of their calls.
Sol had refused to tell them how he was when she found him, her lips pursed and her eyebrows furrowed. The moment any one asked her about the events that happened between finding him and landing up in the hospital, her gaze would go blank and she wouldn't speak for the rest of the hour until someone changed the subject.
Understanding that she wouldn't speak until she was ready, they had let her be, each of them taking turns to make sure she was taking care of herself instead. Sol A and Ye Seul would occasionally bring her clothes and food, tried to ensure that she would eat and take care of herself.
"Ji ho, if you wake up, I promise you I'll give you all my candy that you've asked for over the years." Ye-beom said, sitting at the seat across from Joon hwi and Sol B. The aloof and cheery guy who always had candy at hand, now has a pile of candy he laid out in a small bag labeled 'for Ji Ho.'
"I'll even give you the orange lollipops that you always asked for," he looked down to the floor, sighing.
"Give me the cherry ones, the orange ones are too sour," a weak voice murmured out.
"Sure, anything you want," Ye-beom replied mindlessly, before his head shot up looking up at Ji Ho’s faint smile, his eyes finally open, on the bed.
"God finally!" Bok-gi shot to his bedside, his curly hair frizzier than ever. The only thing that kept it back was black hairband with "Ye-Seul" embroidered on it in gold thread. They'd all slowly gathered around Ji ho, standing at the sides of his bed, the cheers of glee and laughter scattering across the room.
Ji ho scanned the room, looking at the shock and glee on everyone's face before landing on a certain girl who stayed quiet, her eyes narrowed at him. He squinted. "Kang Sol? God, I can't even see you properly because I don't have my glasses. Next time I get shot and I'm in the hospital, please keep my glasses on my face," he joked, everyone letting out scattered bits of laughter.
"Next time?" She stared him down, looking square at his face, her face emotionless as everyone quieted down looking between the two. "There better not be a next time," she said firmly. And it would have been effective, if not for the slight wavering in her voice. If not for the slight tremble in her hands as she looked at him, fully taking him in. Ji ho only grinned at her response, possibly one of the biggest grins he's ever had on his face.
The rest of the afternoon had passed by quickly, with Joon hwi ushering in the doctors letting them know he had woken up and the next two hours spent checking his condition and making sure he was okay. By the time he was able to relax, it was late into the evening.
"Guys, go home, I'll take care of Ji ho for the night," Joon hwi reassured the group, looking specifically at Sol B. Before she could protest, Ji ho grabbed her hand, squeezing it tight. Her lips pressed into a thin line and finally, she relented. Sol A and Ye-Seul came to her side, gently lifting the girl up to her feet as the rest of the group shuffled out, Sol B leaning onto the girls.
"I was right," Ji ho murmured to him, his eyes still glued to the door their friends had shuffled out of.
"I think your uncle and Assemblyman Ko was involved in Lee Man Ho's hit-and-run case," he sighed out, his voice clearer now as he looked up at Joon hwi. Joon hwi turned to him, finally looking at his best friend, but before he could jump to his uncle’s defense, Ji ho held both his hands out.
"When I left the office that night, it wasn't because of Lee Man Ho. I actually found someone that had the footage of the hit-and-run case he had witnessed."
"What?"
"Your uncle. It was your uncle Joon hwi," Ji ho softly said, hesitation coating his voice, "Your uncle was the one in the hit-and-run case.”
Joon hwi felt the same lethargic feeling climb up his body as he looked down at the man, his best friend telling him that the man he had idolized and loved, was the cause of all his pain. The cause of everything Sol A had been through. He could only blink back at Ji ho, his body frozen in shock, his mind too slow to process. The silence in the room stretched out as the tension was thick as ever.
“Look hear me out, okay? You don’t need to say anything right now, let me just,” Ji ho paused, looking up at him with pleading eyes. “Let me just explain.”
Joon hwi could only nod, as he took a seat, lest his body fail him more than it already has.
“For the past week, I’ve been going through your uncle’s older case files. I had to do quite a lot of digging for them, because for some reason these weren’t in the stacks that we could gather when we originally investigated. When I reached files around the time of the hit and run, there was a major gap. Not to mention, that your uncle struck up a friendship with Assemblyman Ko in that same period,” he paused, trying to catch his breath as his eyes scanned Joon hwi’s rigid face.
“After doing a little bit more detailed tracking of his locations and that days events I found that both your uncle and Assemblyman Ko was in the car together as they left the dinner. It’s the only reason why Lee Man Ho has been so elusive with you, because he knows your uncle was in the car with the Assemblyman. So, I tracked his steps back, and I found someone with the footage.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because,” Ji ho paused, looking into Joon hwi’s eyes. He bit his lip slightly, almost hesitating. “Because I needed to be sure it was him. I couldn’t tell you this news because I didn’t want you to re-live the pain of your uncle’s death and now, the death of who you thought your uncle to be.”
The room was dead quiet then, Joon hwi’s body and mind unable to process the death of what his uncle was to him. There was nothing said, because there’s nothing Ji ho could say to make this digestible for him. Nothing he could say to take back the truth of who Joon hwi’s uncle was.
“I need air. I’m going to all Ye-beom and Bok-gi to take over for me,” Joon hwi said as he abruptly stood up, his eyes not meeting Ji ho’s.
“Joon hwi—” Ji ho started, but it was of no use. The man had already stormed out, the hospital door slamming.
Tumblr media
Joon hwi stood in the aisle of the corner store, his hands crumpled into fists at his side as he stared into the walls and walls of ramen. He had just called Ye-beom and Bok-gi, ensuring they took guard of Ji ho’s room before he marched out. Even though his whole world had crumbled in one conversation, he couldn’t bare it if something happened to Ji Ho. Joon hwi passed on the job without much fanfare, attempting at a thin veiled excuse of I’m a lot more tired than I thought I was.
Now, in front of him were rows and rows of colorful packets of ramen. The colors of the packaging blurred as Joon hwi stared intently at the packets, his body unable to move as his mind was still stunned from his best friend’s news.
When he was a kid, his uncle would take him to a convenience store, one that looked exactly like the one he was standing in right now. His uncle, laughing, would place him on his shoulders, making sure he could see every choice before making it.
Giggling, Joon hwi would choose the brightest one possible, and together, his uncle and him, would go home and make it together. Joon hwi would be placed on the kitchen counter, his young legs swinging into the cabinets as he watched his uncle do all the hard and dangerous steps, steps he wasn’t quite old enough to do by himself.
Sharing the sacred process of making and eating ramen together, his uncle making sure to ask Joon hwi about his studies, his days at school, learning everything that went on his life.
And when he would go to sleep on those weekends, he’d dream of wearing the mahogany robes of a prosecutor, just like his uncle. He would dream of laughing and appreciating his life, just like his uncle. And he’d dream that one day he’d be old enough to make the ramen by himself, at his uncle’s side rather than watching him do the steps.
But now he was tall enough to see all the colors of the packages. He was old enough to make the ramen without getting burned, without needing help. But in this moment, all he wished was to return to the blissful ignorance of a child. To have his uncle hold his hand, as he stirred the ramen and teach him every step.
He wished to have his uncle here, to hold his hand through every step. To tell him how to grapple with the fact that the man he idolized, the man he formed his ideals after, was human after all. To help him accept that his uncle was not the man he thought he was.
Joon hwi could only stand, looking into the aisles, as he felt like he was both five and thirty at the same time, looking into the same ramen packets but now from a completely different perspective.
The small chime of the store door rang, as another customer walked into the store, but it was only background noise to Joon hwi, his body still frozen in place. Still, he could make out the black cap of the customer move across the aisles into the one opposing his. His brain still slow, he couldn’t make the connection between the man’s face and his own memory until his eyes met the man’s eyes. The familiar sneering, kniving eyes. The eyes of Lee Man Ho.
As if his mind was jolted into reality, his body reacted, moving from his aisle. But he was a beat too late as Lee Man Ho had already taken off, running out the door of the convenience store and into the street.
Joon hwi ran after him into the street, adrenaline pumping through his veins. His legs couldn’t move fast enough, his body severely constrained by his office wear, but it didn’t matter. Despite the rounded alleyways and narrow streets, Joon hwi followed him, running as fast as his legs could carry him.
Lee Man ho twisted into the alleyway, the walls closing in on the both of them, until it led out into an street, leading all the way to some tunnel. With a new burst of energy, Joon hwi picked up his speed, his hands reaching out to push the rough material of the culprit. Lee Man ho stumbled, his pace ruined for long enough for Joon hwi to reach and swing, his fist connecting sickeningly against the body of this man. Lee Man ho twisted, now facing Joon hwi was he went in for a punch but Joon hwi ducked, stumbling back.
A calm rage washed over him as he sprung forward and swung again, this time his fist connecting with Lee Man Ho’s face. He recoiled, but sprung back to land a punch into Joon hwi’s gut, almost kneeling him over.
“Finally abandoned the law for this, huh Prosecutor?” Lee Man ho’s eyes narrowed as he flashed him a sickening smile, the dim street light glinting off of the metal in his teeth.
Joon hwi could only grunt in response, a hand going up to press into his gut as he stood up once again. He raced forward blindly, attempting for another hit, only for the man to dodge.
“Oh sorry, you’re a lawyer now, aren’t you,” Lee Man Ho sneered, and Joon hwi attempted again, just time kicking up at him. His foot connected with his body as Lee Man ho crumpled into the pavement.
Taking this opportunity, Joon hwi once again surged forward, caging Lee Man ho to the concrete road as he swung, his fist connecting to the man’s face. There was only adrenaline and anger, betrayal and rage, that flooded Joon hwi’s mind, the rationality leaving his body as he kept going. His knuckles screamed at the repeated contact, and his hands were now covered with the red, sticky blood of the man laying on the ground. There was no end to what he wanted to do to the man laying here, all the pain and rage and mistakes and hurt pouring out of him.
“Like uncle, like nephew,” Lee Man Ho laughed up at him, the taunting face now covered in blood and bruises. Tears blurred in his eyes as he slowed down, his punches becoming less frequent. Like uncle, like nephew.
Suddenly, a bright light tracks down the street, the sound of a car’s tires against the asphalt fills the empty night. Joon hwi turns, his mind suddenly distracted and Lee Man Ho takes his opportunity to push him off, stumbling up. His body was dragging, as he ran off, away from Joon hwi, away from the car.
Still, with bloodied hands, Joon hwi could only stumble back to the side of the road, away from the path of the car as he collapsed once more, his body crumpling down. The pain of his uncle’s betrayal was nothing compared to the guilt and pain of what he had just done. It only came crawling back into his soul, the pit in his stomach only deeper than ever.
The car rushed down the street, but oddly, it started slowing down, nearing where he sat against the side of the road before stopping fully. The bright light of the car shone into his eyes, only able to squint as someone got out of the driver’s seat, a figure approaching him. On instinct, Joon hwi crawled back, danger and warning bells ringing in his mind.
“Joon hwi?” an alarmed voice rang out, and Joon hwi jerked his head up to see Kang Sol tower over him, concern etched in her face. His Kang Sol. He could only blink at her, his mouth unable to form any words to greet her, to tell her what he’d done, to tell her what he is.
“Are you alright?” she asked him, her voice soothing as she knelt in front of him, her hands carefully placed around his jaw and his face, turning it in her hands to face her. Still, he blinked back.
Her gaze was so gentle, as if she knew. Her touch was so soft, her nimble hands cupping his face as if he deserved the kindness. Here was the woman he had wrongfully convicted, the woman he had almost put in jail, then taken back in as a lawyer to undo his own wrongdoing.
Like uncle, like nephew.
The thought raced through his mind as the tears fell from his eyes, his body shuddering with the withheld pain and anger. They only fell faster, as her hands moved against his waist to pull him to her, wrapping her arms around his exhausted form.
“I was– I was wrong, I was always wrong." he shuddered out the words, the tears choking him. His body shuddered again as he cried into her shoulder, the tears and pain wracking his body.
“My uncle. He was–” he started, but his mouth paused, unable to finish the sentence.
“Shh, I know, I know,” she soothed him, dragging him closer into her embrace.
“You know?” his voice cracked asking her, as he pulled away slightly to look at him.
“Bok-gi told me. Well, Ji ho told the both of them, concerned for you and Bok-gi called me to go look for you. I had to track your location through your phone,” Sol explained, her voice especially soft as she nervously shifted his hair out his eyes.
The pain only grew inside him, the tears still falling as he struggled to apologize, to explain, to say something to the woman in front of him.
“If I had based everything off of my uncle’s morals, the tenants of the law that he had taught me...” he paused, looking up at her, his eyes pleading her to tell him he’s wrong. “Then what if I’m wrong? What if I had been wrong this whole time, and... and every arrest and argument I made as a prosecutor was wrong?”
There was a silence that enveloped him, as he cried harder, his body shuddering at the thought that everything leading him was wrong. Everything he used as a guidance was wrong.
“You’re not your uncle, Joon hwi,” Sol told him, her voice firm as she looked at him. He peered into her eyes then, as she repeated the phrase to him, almost soothingly. “You’re acknowledging it, apologizing for it. Something your uncle never did. You’re not your uncle.”
Still, it wasn’t enough to override his mind as he lay there, in her embrace, the exhaustion preventing him from moving. And she stayed there, by his side, drawing him in as she repeated the soothing words. Until he was all run out of tears. Until his sadness gave into exhaustion.

sweet love
They say drunk words are your sober thoughts. Joon Hwi clearly had too many thoughts.
prompted by an anon from this question here! thanks anon!!
notes: hello! back with another fic, this time when joonhwi gets too drunk and spills more than he expects. stay till the end though, i added a little bonus as usual. editing, grammar and other mistakes will be taken responsible by me! thank you all for your love and support as always! i’ll see you for more next time!
original prompt: I love your fic 🥰 this is so far from canon but a drunk joonhwi being clingy towards sol a is one of my dream scenarios 😚 or the squad catching solhwi being clingy with each other because they were hiding their relationship
words: 3414 words
Joon Hwi was beyond excited everyday when he woke up for school. No, he wasn't excited to get the top grade, neither was he excited to get his essays and reports done. Though he loves the law, he’s sane enough to not love it that much.
Of course, he’s just excited about meeting his girlfriend, Kang Sol.
He never knew how they got together. It was a natural thing, after all. After the whole fiasco with Assemblyman Ko, their relationship suddenly felt a lot closer. They were close to begin with, with their daily studying and lunches and dinners. But something was different after the middle of their second year.
It started out as dinners every night, with or without the study group. Then Sol would be in study group sessions wearing his sweater or hoodies. When Yeseul or Yebeom teased, Sol would always argue to say that it was cold in their copy room and Joon Hwi was just being nice. Joon Hwi would just pretend that ‘sharing sweaters were normal’.
Then one day, as Joon Hwi sent Sol back home to take care of Byeol, they sat side by side in silence. Sol was desperately in need of catching up on her sleep, so the forty minute bus ride served as a quick nap for her. She turned her head to lean on Joon Hwi’s shoulder, resting her head there for her nap. To make things more comfortable, he placed his arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer.
When they were nearing their stop, Joon Hwi instinctively shook a sleepy Sol up and held her hand as he dragged her out so she wouldn’t miss the stop. Sol doesn’t let go, and neither does Joon Hwi. Only when they reach the start of the alley do they let go of their hands. (Sol insists it’s because she doesn’t want Byeol to know. Joon Hwi thinks it’s because she’s shy.)
When Joon Hwi is at her front door with Sol, they shyly look at each other, the feelings mutual and conveyed with just their eyes. Of course, they are soulmates. They don't need the words to deliver their entire hearts or feelings.
It was always made known from the start to Joon Hwi that Sol was special to him. He has never met someone so persistent, so passionate and so damm beautiful. He had a couple of flings, being the popular smart boy in school, but none of the girls made his heart beat the same way Sol did. None of them made his world stop.
It has been a year since. And things weren’t easy when you tried to hide it. Sol, a student on a scholarship, had better luck being chosen to attend this school than the number of times the couple almost got caught.
In school, they acted normally as classmates and friends. Their study group sensed something different, but they would just deny and pretend. They put on a pretty good act, if they were to say so themselves, having Bokgi convinced that they needed to find Sol a blind date. (Joon Hwi would have spat his water at him like how Professor Yang did at Prosecutor Jin, but he held it in. Five months of hiding couldn’t be wasted now.)
They wanted to tell their friends, they really did. But they wanted to do it after their bar exams. After the weight of the bar has been lifted off will they share their good news. But while hiding a relationship is hard, making time for one was harder. (Arguably, Joon Hwi finds this harder than any exam he took.)
They absolutely found every minute they could to be together. Every hidden staircase was a spot they tried to spend a few minutes to themselves, but even that was difficult. Joon Hwi would remember how Sol would lead him to a hidden staircase far from their hideout, so as to not get walked in by either the professors or their friends. Even in the midst of Joon Hwi pressing Sol against the wall, as they devoured each other’s lips after a whole day of being unable to kiss, they would be interrupted by the sudden doors of the staircase upstairs opening, causing them to fly apart and run out.
The gossip the school carried was insane, and the last thing they wanted was gossip to reach their friends.
They could spend longer moments in the study room in the middle of the nights where they would be alone, as they worked on their cases and work. Occasionally, they shared bunggeoppangs and hotteoks, where they had long kisses tasting of sweet red bean and honey. But too many times Sol found herself shifting from her seat next to Joon Hwi to climbing on top of his lap in a make-out session, as Joon Hwi reached up to remove the highlighter holding her hair. Just as they wanted more, a sudden noise would bring them to attention and frantically, Sol would fall back onto her chair, both of their faces flushed red.
It was just four more months till the graduation ceremony came.
Till the world knows Sol was Joon Hwi’s.
-----
The bar exam went smoothly, as everyone received their results of passing. As a celebration, the boys decided to drink and have a meal apart from their usual delivery. No, it was time for the real deal of barbecues, meat and stews. They decided to even give a call to Seungjae, who graciously accepted their offer despite being so busy with his new son in his life. The study group has met his kid a couple of times, and even babysat a few hours together.
The boys met at a relatively near barbecue place in the heart of Dongdaemun, a location that the boys could easily return back to the dorms and not too far away. They were at an all-you-could-eat place, suitable for their budget so that they didn’t burn a hole in their pockets. Seungjae offered to treat his dongsaengs. After all, passing the bar was no easy feat. But they declined. His presence with them was enough of a gift from him to them.
But what was a dinner without the star, soju?
Joon Hwi prided himself on holding his liquor well. He could easily have a bottle without feeling the buzz. He could have a second without difficulty as well. Surely, he won’t be drunk, right?
Oh, but how wrong he was.
The bottles of soju and beers kept coming, never ending, as BokGi and Yebeom pushed shot after shot to him and themselves. They were surely prepared to get hammered tomorrow and show up to their 10am lecture spinning. Seungjae, having driven, only watched and smiled as he looked at his dongsaengs drink, sipping on his cola.
“Hyung, you sure you don’t have anything on with Sol-A noona? You know, we catch you with her all the time.” Bokgi asks, his face slightly flushed and words a little slurred. Yebeom nods his head, nodding his head in agreement. Joon Hwi only lets himself smile, not saying anything as he shoots back an additional shot of soju.
“Wah, hyung! So you admit it?” Yebeom says, setting down his chopsticks. Jiho stops chewing on his ssam, and looks next to him at Joon Hwi, who just shrugs, a mysterious smile on his face. Seungjae only places more meat on Joon Hwi’s plate.
With a short glance, Yebeom, Jiho and Bokgi’s eyes met. It was long enough for them to get what they were trying to say, but yet short enough for Joon Hwi to not notice the silence.
They weren’t blind to Joon Hwi’s actions. They noticed how Joon Hwi would look at Sol when she’s practicing for a mock trial, and his gentle voice when he would point out things she missed. Jiho, for one, noticed how Joon Hwi would return to the dorm later or look at his phone, smiling like an idiot. When asked, Joon Hwi would either use the excuse that he went out to the city or he was looking at cat videos, which bore Jiho.
But tonight, they were not leaving this place until he spilled his secret.
“Excuse me! Can we get three more portions of samgyeopsal, one more moksal, one dwangjang jjigae, and three more bottles of soju please?” Bokgi politely shouted to the store helper, who readily nodded.
“One more rice, please!” Yebeom added.
And so, with every portion of food, they shot back shot after shot as they feasted on their fresh juicy grilled pork and stew. They were glad that Joon Hwi was slowly slurring his words, because they themselves were barely hanging on.
“Hyung, you can be honest, you know. We won’t say anything about your private life with noona.” Yebeom says, fighting off the buzz and taking a big gulp of water. Joon Hwi, now face flushed bright red, only let out another smile as he laid back on his chair.
“Ah, Sol...” He murmured out loud.
“You know, she’s really touchy when she’s drunk? She likes to cling on to people when she’s drunk. When she’s angry, she pushes people away instead.” The words come tumbling out of his mouth before he can stop himself. No, this wasn’t Joon Hwi. This was drunk Joon Hwi. The other three immediately perked up hearing this.
“A-Ah, really? How do you know that?” Yebeom prompted, determined to draw out more information.
“Remember the time we were late to Dean Oh’s lecture? We drank that night with Yeseul and Bokgi. She couldn’t stop clinging onto my hoodie after both of them went back. And the other time when she pushed me away after her first year results were out.” Joon Hwi says, the stupid smile still on his face.
“How cute.” He quietly says, eyes closed.
There wasn't a need to know further that their hyung, Han Joon Hwi, had feelings for Kang Sol, the feisty noona.
“Hyung, then why not date her?” Bokgi says, the news keeping him at the end of his seat. Jiho merely sits, ears wide open and ready for any information.
“Date?” Joon Hwi says and lets out a light unmistakable giggle. Oh, he really was drunk now.
“We already are.”
The trio exchange knowing eyes, knowing how their objectives for the night have been accomplished. Seungjae, from the end of the table, merely shakes his head with a smile.
“Hyung, did you know?” Jiho asks. Seungjae nodded.
“They told me. After all, I am no longer a student.” This earned groans from the trio, calling it unfair.
“I miss Sol...” Joon Hwi murmurs, as his drunken state reaches for another shot of soju. Instinctively, Jiho reaches it first and shoves a glass of water in his hand instead. If anything, he was sleeping with this man in the same room. And he was not having his drunken state continue further. After all, they completed their mission for the night.
All that mattered was remembering it the next day.

Sol was in the midst of folding her clothes before her phone rang, distracting her from her music that she had on with her ear pieces. Irritated, she picked up her phone, not bothering to look at the caller ID.
“Hello?”
“Sol-A? It’s oppa.”
“Seungjae-oppa? Why are you calling so late? Is anything the matter?” She asks, alerted by the sudden call. It was almost midnight, and it was rare for Seungjae to call.
“Ah, no. Nothing is wrong. I’m just at the lobby of the school at the Lady Justice statue with a very drunk Joon Hwi and the rest of the boys. I can’t bring them up myself, especially since I can’t enter the dorms anymore.” Seungjae explains. In the back, Sol can hear a noisy Bokgi and Jiho telling him to shut up.
“Give me five minutes.” She says and hangs up. The urgency in Sol’s voice drew the attention of Sol B, who was ready to get to bed. Sol B only looks at Sol for a moment and Sol just gives a sympathetic smile.
“Could... Could you come with me?” Sol asks nervously. Sol B looks at Sol for a moment before she throws a hoodie on and throws another hoodie to Sol. The last thing they needed was them to be recognised. Seungjae was where he said he would be, with indeed, four grown men, sprawled on the couches. Bokgi, Yebeom and Jiho were at least conscious enough to greet both Sols, but Joon Hwi just had his eyes shut, murmuring incorrigible things.
“Sorry you had to deal with them, oppa. They really owe you a big apology.” Sol apologises for the sake of her boyfriend, and his friends. Seungjae only shakes his head.
“They should enjoy this before they step into the workforce and can’t experience it anymore.” He gives a smile. “Joon Hwi got a little carried away. He might have spilled your relationship.” Sol B was not standing far as she forced Bokgi and the rest upright, but she could clearly hear it.
“I’ll settle it. You should go home now, don’t keep Juyoung-unnie waiting. I’ll get them to their rooms.” She said before making her quick goodbye to Seungjae.
Together, both Sols pushed Bokgi and Yebeom up to their room, half guiding and half carrying the heavy boys to their door. When they were back downstairs, Sol B instinctively grabbed Jiho by his arm and pulled him up.
“Sol B, about what-” Sol was cut off by her roommate.
“I know. Don’t tell anyone yet. But, you know you suck at hiding and lying, don't you?” She says, her head turned back, before turning back to help Jiho back to his room. Sol does all she can to suppress her smile. Even though her roommate is harsh, she could feel the love. Turning around, she faces her drunk boyfriend.
“Joon. Joon Hwi.” Sol shakes gently. Joon Hwi’s lips curl up slightly, as his arms reach up to wrap them around the familiar body he missed. Sol was clingy when she was drunk, but it was the pot calling the kettle black for Joon Hwi. If possible, he was even clingier.
“You need to go up to your room.” She says as she fights away his loose grip and half supports his drunk body to his room.
“I missed you, Sol...” He murmurs, a face turning into a pout. “You know I kept telling them how good a girlfriend you are? How you always got me coffees and made extra ramyeons.”
“And you also told them we are dating?”
“Of course! I want the whole world to know I love you!” Joon Hwi says a little loudly, and she clamps his mouth shut. Oh, he was definitely more than drunk. Joon Hwi’s arms clung onto her waist as she reached his door.
“Go. You can face the mess you made in the morning.” She says. Joon Hwi clings onto her, giving her a sad pout.
“No more goodnight kisses?” He asked, a voice like a child. His eyes were big and round, his mouth downturned slightly like a pout.
Sol couldn’t deny him one, especially when he looked so adorable. Looking around, she made sure the coast was clear before she reached up to let her lips meet his soft ones. He tasted like lingering alcohol and she could taste it, but she couldn’t help but want more of his intoxicating lips on hers. But not today.
Pulling away, he let out a slight whine. But Sol gave him a quick peck.
“You’ll get more, when you get up.” And Sol pushes him into the room, leaving back to her own dorm, knowing that she’ll be faced with a big headache the next morning.
-----
When Joon Hwi is up the next morning, he’s greeted with a Jiho who rubs his eyes and holds his head in his hand. Joon Hwi isn’t sure if he’s spinning or the room is. Or if it is spinning in the first place. Jiho notices he’s up and grunts a good morning, before getting up to get ready.
The memories of last night come back to Joon Hwi in waves as the pieces start slowly fixing themselves together throughout the morning. By the time he’s at his first lecture, his memories have more or less come back.
He’s certain that Sol would be mad. He makes a mental note to send Seungjae an apology and thank you message. Then, he starts making plans to bribe the trio. He knows about Yebeom’s love for candy, so he starts with that. He just needs to think of what brand of sneakers to get for Bokgi. Heck, would bribes even work against them?
But throughout the morning, the boys do nothing to mention anything about last night. They chat about their hangover, how Seungjae is doing well with his new job and the amount of food they ate. No one mentions anything about Joon Hwi, or his words.
Joon Hwi counts himself safe. They must have forgotten, he thinks. He figures it was the best they did. It definitely would save him an earful from Sol and a large headache. During lunch, as they finished their simple meal at the cafeteria of soup, rice and bulgogi, Bokgi is about to clear his tray before he turns to Joon Hwi.
“Oh, hyung.”
“Hm?”
“We remember everything. From the start, to the end.” He says, a teasing grin on his face as he quickly scurries away, not wanting to die before he graduates. Joon Hwi rolls his eyes back and groans.
Well, shit.
-----
bonus:
“Sol B, did you know our roommates are dating?” Jiho asks, his voice slightly slurred as Sol B drags him up the stairs. She gives a nod. Sol B was no idiot to fall for her roommate’s excuses, when her face gave it all away. It was fascinating how the others haven’t noticed.
“It would be an insult to our careers if we didn't notice the way they looked at their phones.” She sarcastically says. Jiho manages to scoff. Sol B is about to tap Jiho’s key card of their door, but his hand stops hers, as she feels his body right behind his.
“Well, they haven’t found out about us yet.” Jiho says softly to her, his face nuzzled into her neck, lips brushing her neck as he slowly moves his lips up to her jaw. Sol brings a gentle hand to his cheek, before turning around to face Jiho.
“We’re better actors.” She whispers so soft. Jiho can't tell if it’s the alcohol or him, but all he knows is that Sol B looks so damm perfect with her doe-like eyes, soft pink lips and the way she teases him drives him insane. He wants her, and he wants her now.
He crashes his lips on hers, wanting to so desperately taste her. It’s been a long day, and he’s never felt so in need. Sol B tastes the lingering alcohol on his lips, but she couldn’t care. She needs him the same way he wants her. Her hands reach up to grab his hair as Jiho’s hands slip under her hoodie, feeling the smooth skin of her waist against his fingers. They know that they are in the middle of the hallway, but, god, it felt so good.
“God, I missed this.” Jiho mumbled, almost growling, against her lips, earning a slight smirk from the younger girl that he could feel. He sucks on her lower lip, earning a soft gasp from the girl as she only kisses him harder. Biting lovingly on her swollen lips, he shifts his attention to her jaw, leaving butterfly kisses and earning a sigh of pleasure from her.
But it was short lived, as she pulled away. They knew they had to stop, before their secret was revealed, too. Jiho wishes he could bring her into the dorm and continue this session with her. Sol B looks at him lovingly, biting her lip in an attempt to tease.
“We’ll continue this tomorrow.” Sol B says, giving him another loving kiss as she leaves for her room and Jiho returns to his, buzzed from the alcohol and the adrenaline rush from his make out session. He inwardly groans, hating how his girlfriend teases him, but also smirks, knowing how to get back at her the next day.
Let’s hope he remembers this.

I'M SCREAMING
Tumblr media
(Screenshot I took from JTBC's Law School BTS for ep. 16, part 3, min 6:45)
OKAY SO, let me start by saying I don't usually ship real people because, no offense, I think it's weird but-
KIM BUM, SIR, CAN YOU NOT? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO NOT SHIP YOU IF YOU LOOK AT RYU HYEYOUNG LIKE THAT, HUH? He's literally the personification of the heart eyes emoji and NO ONE can tell me otherwise. That's an off-script Han Joon Whipped moment right there.
And let's not even mention the back rub he gives her afterwards...
Also, ps: if someone ever looks at me that way I'm marrying them, period. But since I'm as clueless as Kang Sol is, the chances of that happening are very slim lmao

Solhwi fic request: ou know this quote by Mr Darcy when Elizabeth asks him when he realized his feelings for her:
"I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."
Something like this for established attorney and prosecutor solhwi who share an apartment: one day all of a sudden sol asks joon hwi 'why me? when? how it all started?' And he answers. And fluff and mush follows
Thank you in advance if you pick this stupid ask
omg omg omg i love this!! so here's a lil drabble for u :)
rated t (implied stuff, theyve been dating for a long time, so y'know, stuff)
thank u for making this ask omg (* ̄3 ̄)
they had finished doing everything. the walls, the fixtures, everything had been done. it took them a long time, yes, but they were finally here.
han joon-hwi and kang sol, in the next chapter of their lives, no matter how chaotic. they were in the middle of seoul, in their first apartment, one that let the sunlight in (too much sunlight, joon argued), one that was away from all the bad memories of lee man ho and the apartment that he had taken up.
still, there had been good memories for her in that tiny, dingy little ground floor apartment, memories of her and byeol, her and dan, her and joon, all mixed in this glorious kaleidoscope that she allowed herself to revisit on days she felt nostalgic. most efficient when with a drink, professor kim had told her once, dont let your emotions get better of you, but if you do, remember to have a drink by your side.
so there they are, she muses with a can of beer in her hand, two "law professionals" (although they dont make as much money as either would like, struggling to pay off both their loans) in the middle of seoul, one a prosecutor, the other, an attorney. joon was a rising star in the prosecution in his own right--people knew his potential, people recognised it as a n entity separate from that of his uncle. she wouldn't admit to it, but she was regarded as a rising star in the scene, she was kind, she was passionate, and everyone knew she would go the extra mile to help her client. so they are here, setting up their house, in the middle of everything in their lives.
"get those boxes for me, please," joon's voice calls for her, and she stirs into action, setting her can on the table and picking up the heavy box of law books that would now be a part of their home, and struggles under the weight of it, before straightening up to go and give them to joon.
he doesn't call by a term of endearment--she can count on one hand how many times she's heard the word jagiya or yeobo fall from his lips, always kang sol, always the same name with which he had called her in those hallways of hankuk law. it's comforting, in a way.
"here," she says, placing them on the ground beside him and sitting down cross-legged to admire the work of art that was the huge bookshelf, filled to the brim with books that they had either hoarded from their university days, or recently bought, "i got the books, mr. prosecutor."
joon starts, looking at her, and gives her a smile, "thank you, attorney kang." its strange, the way the name rolls off of his tongue, but she's learnt to take the compliment, after so many years.
"attorney?" she scoffs, watching the way he places books in the shelf, one after the other, calculated and precise, "han joon-hwi. one moment."
"yes?" he turns to her, eyes wide, and its a reminder of how different the two of them are, the prosecutor and the attorney, han joon-hwi and kang sol. he had asked her out in a moment like this, helping her arrange documents in her office, just a look and a simple question, will you go out with me, kang sol? on most days, she doesn't need reassurance from him, but today, in the dying sunlight, kang sol feels as though she needs to hear from him exactly why he asked her.
"why do you like me?" she blurts out, and joon-hwi's eyes widen for a split second, before he laughs, and she has to shake her head, "i'm serious, joon-hwi. why did you ask me out? when did you decide that you wanted to ask me out?"
he stops at that, looking intently at her for a second, until he turns back to his books, "you mean when did i start liking you?"
"yes, in a way."
"there really isn't a time, though," he turns around to face her, "if i could say, i'd say the moment you pulled the highlighter out of your bun to avoid being asked for a question. or the time you defended me in a mock trial in front of the dean. or even the moment when you worked to get my indictment overturned."
she blushes, not knowing what to say. joon's always been the better with words, using them to his advantage, and it is no different now, with him grinning as he takes in her flustered face, "do you want to hear more, kang sol?" he teases, and sol tries to block her ears, but he's faster than her, grabbing her hands to keep them at her side, "the time you scammed me in the bookstore, the time you ran out of the dorms because professor yang was in the hospital, the time--"
"ah, stop!" she exclaims, wrenching her hands free and placing them over joon-hwi's mouth, "i told you to stop!" his eyes are gleaming with happiness as she pushes him away from her, "i'll seriously kill you if you dont stop--oof!"
she's silenced by his insistent mouth on hers, feeling the smile in joon-hwi's kiss as he intertwines their fingers. no matter how long they have been dating, kissing joon feels the same, its the same butterflies in her stomach, the same dizziness in her mind.
"you're funny, han joon-hwi," she grumbles once they break apart, "and a cheater."
"cheater?" his eyes grow wide, but he's still grinning, "are you accusing me of cheating? me, a prosecutor?"
"yes," she smiles, "cheater," before attempting to get away, but joon-hwi is faster (curse his reflexes) and he catches ahold of her, before pulling her down onto his lap, "cheater."
"you're dating this cheater," he grins, "wouldnt that make you an accomplice?"
"how dare you--" but he's kissing her again, effectively stopping all kinds of thought, mumbling against his mouth, "cheater."
he smiles, breaking apart, "well then, how would you like to spend an afternoon with this cheater, ms attorney?"
she squints, "we have a lot of work to do."
he smiles again, "work can wait."
"you're right," she replies, grinning as he picks her up with ease, "work can wait."
