Acquired: July 2023
Local Name: Panda Plant or Chocolate Soldier
Botanical Name: Kalanchoe Tomentosa
Personal Name: Pam
Another find at Succulent Garden Gifts in Milford, OH. I had to BEG the lady to sell me this as it was the last one they had and she was wanting to keep it for propagating more. Luckily she decided she had enough cuttings for others that she sold me this one! So happy to get this Panda Plant!

Time for pictures of my favorites:
Echeveria Black Cat. Idiot who's decided overwatering is the look. Just like my mom's cat with the same name, he's nothing but trouble.
Tumblr media
Haworthia Attenuata. Big Q my beautiful "First". Hasn't needed water yet and it's been a month. The only one with a decorated terracotta pot (that's probably too big for him but it's what I had at the time...) (decoration not visible)
Tumblr media
Echeveria Black Zaragoza. A small little guy who's either dried up with the flower or not. Got a few fingerprints tho..
Tumblr media
Kalanchoe Tomentosa Teddy Bear. Oh my precious Tallulah so soft and flawless

Kalanchoe tomentosa
The genus Kalanchoe is part of the Crassulaceae, or Stonecrop Family, and they have their greatest diversity in Madagascar. This one is Kalanchoe tomentosa, and it is easy to see why it was named this, since “tomentosa” means hairy. Not only are the leaves covered with hairs, but the flower stalk and the outsides of the flowers are, too. The yellow and reddish-brown color of the flowers is unusual, and the brown tinge on the leaf hairs gives this particular form the cultivar name ‘Chocolate Soldier’.

Plant Mom Scare! - Yellow Fungus in Soil
Hi all! I just had the biggest freak-out with my plants recently. So I have almost 35 plant children (not including the ones that haven't sprouted yet, putting it at about 50). My panda plant (kalanchoe tomentosa), named Chloe, had some sort of fungal infection! I noticed it when checking in after watering my tomato seedlings and she had these weird yellow fuzzy balls creeping out of the rocks. When I tell you, I freaked OUT. I immediately took her out of the windowsill and put her in the kitchen after realizing it was raining cats and bulls outside so I had two options: 1. Wait until the weather dries up (not for another week) or 2. Have a shower with Mother Nature. I really didn't want that stuff to sit in dear Chloe, not knowing how bad it was and refusing to touch it with my bare hands, and considering it might be a fungal infection from excessive moisture, I wasn't sure if the humidity from the rainy weather (as I live in a very humid area) was going to make it worse! As such, I chose the latter. Putting on nitrile powder-free gloves and a SP-150 mask from the pandemic I took Chloe outside to the patio doing my best not to get her wet. I really wish I could've fixed her indoors but my parents and brother wouldn't allow it. Getting her leaves wet wouldn't be good, so I did my best to keep her sufficiently far enough and shielded from the heavy rain. Leaving Chloe protected under the patio, I ran out into the rain to get the cactus/succulent soil (that which I should've put under the patio for the rain but like the forgetful person I am I didn't), my gardening shovels, and my last two pots (one for the bad soil so I wouldn't make a mess, the other for the good soil that Chloe was getting repotted in). When I had the station set up I got to work on doing some succulent surgery - I took the rocks out, revealing more of the porous balls before completely unpotting the poor girl. When I got a closer look of the situation I was so ready to throw up then and there. The yellow balls smelled a bit like Mycelium (I think?) and were EVERYWHERE in her soil. And that is where I noticed the root of the problem, pun intended. Since Chloe was in one of those indoor self-watering pots, there was an irremovable bottom to the pot that the water sits in. That is exactly where the pores were coming from. That is when I didn't bother cleaning the pot (I wasn't going to use it again anyway I was so disgusted) and just threw it away in the trash bag my brother gave me as well as the pot that the old soil went into because I really didn't want to spread the pores. I can always get new pots in the future so it wasn't too much of a big deal, especially if I didn't know how contagious it was. After stripping Chloe down almost to her bare roots to get rid of all the pesky fuzzballs, I put her in a freshly soiled pot gently and patted her in. I didn't have any rocks to work with to put at the bottom but when things dry up I plan to. I cleaned my entire windowsill and put everyone back to where they were, Chloe included. I hope Chloe will be okay :( I didn't take any pictures because it was a rush of the moment, but after settling Chloe down and taking a shower and I did some research and the links attached are basically what it was! As I suspected it was from watering too much, which is something I can easily fix into Chloe's watering schedule. If you had a similar experience with your plants, please feel free to share! I will be happy to reply as needed :)

Here's some funny succlents for you, I'm not an expert on gardening but I heard about some of these guys over the years, I don't know about the pictures so I'll just put their names in here and a quick description:
Cotyledon Tomentosa - also known as the "bear's paw plant" is adorable cause it looks like a little, green and red paw of a bear, it's very cute.
Haworthia cooperi and Haworthia retusa - both of these plants have see-through parts of their leaves, they look super cool!
Haworthia coarctata - can be both green or reddish-purple and it grows in big clumps that sometimes form almost braid like structures, it's leaves also have little white speckles on them.
Haworthia truncata - sometimes called "horse's teeth plant" has quite short leaves with an interesting shape and quite a variety of shades on them.
Kalanchoe tomentosa - has long, furry leaves with dark red speckles or lines on their edges
Pachyphytum oviferum - (it's also called the moonstone plant, that's very fitting) it has thick, round leaves that can range from ashy greens to almost violets, very pretty succulent.
Sedum morganianum - or "Donkey tail" is a plant that grows into long strands. Their leaves are small and round.
That's it for the succulent appreciation!
May I interest you in the sketches I’ve made so far 👀

Now to lineart and color!
Thank you very very much for the suggestions I like making these little dudes. Maybe I’ll make a species out of them
