Fandom Year in Review (2023)

It's the very last day of 2023, which means it's time for my annual look back and some number-crunching with my AO3 stats and writing over the year!

(Before I get to setting next year's goals and back to writing before midnight, of course! ;))

I posted 142 new stories to AO3 this year!

Fewer than last year but still quite a respectable number (especially given I dropped off posting every single day after October this year - I kept it up for 1,675 days straight, or 55 complete months!).

Those stories were in 33 fandoms, 14 of them new, and featured 43 ships (not counting gen relationships), 18 of them new!

Warrior Baek Dong-soo Edition

The first character I fell in love with: Dong-soo. Everyone goes for Woon first, and I do love Woon, but the loudmouthed idiot who is also a genius with a heart of gold? I can't resist this kind of character and I loved him from the time we saw him on screen as a 12-year-old.

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Mi-so. She's my girl and I love writing her character.

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Everyone else loves Woon, and so do I. I don't understand this fandom's admiration for Chun, though, dude is literally a serial killer who mindfucked Woon most of his life. He also smells like stale wine and looks like he's going to fall off his horse.

The character I love that everyone else hates: Dong-soo, unfortunately. He gets far too much hate in this fandom and it's mostly because of that stupid finale.

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: I never loved him, but I didn't have bad feelings towards Gwang-taek the first time I watched the show. The more I rewatch, the more I wish he had just fallen off that cliff while doing pull-ups in Qing.

The character I would totally smooch: Umm. Can I submit a Top Ten list instead of a single candidate or...?

The character I’d want to be like: General Seo! He got to troll the boys at the beacons AND laugh in the villain's face. I want his life.

The character I’d slap: Again, I need a Top Ten list for this, and we may need to replace slapping with stabbing.

A pairing that I love: After Dong-soo & Woon, my favorite ships are Gak/Mi-so (I started it so I have to list them first), Yi San/Jin-joo (started by @tepidcupoftea and now we all ship it), Jang-mi/Sa-mo (canon), and Ga-ok/Jin-gi (should've been canon).

A pairing that I despise: Woon/Queen Jung-soon. I mean really, what are people thinking shipping this? You might as well ship Woon with Hong at this rate, she's a full-blown villain who tried to murder a child, helped murder Sado, tried to murder Dong-soo, etc. I don't care how many times she bats her eyelashes, she's disgusting and I'm pretty sure Woon would be sickened by the very thought. He was drawn to kind people like Dong-soo and Ji-sun, and he told us (and Jung-soon) himself that he's not shallow. -100/10 do not want ever to come across this again in my life.

Short Kdramas/Drama Special/Web Drama

Part 2

These short kdramas fit in nicely when my drama capacity is challenging. Since some of you may experience a similar drama challenge, I thought I'd share these kdramas with you.

Part 1 here

Check Out The Event

Ha Song Yi (Bang Min Ah) and Park Do Kyum (Kwon Hwa Woon) broke up after five years of dating. It wasn't what she wanted, but he is determined and doesn't intend to explain his reasons very well. Meanwhile, Song Yi ends up winning a promotion that the two signed up for together while they were dating, worth an all-expenses-paid trip to Jeju Island. Not to miss the opportunity, she asks Do Kyum to accompany her, and, surprisingly, he accepts.

This is a short drama, with only four episodes and wonderful cinematography. A melodrama with a touch of comedy. All this with the beautiful landscapes of Jeju in the background.

It tries to pass on an interesting message, especially with regard to communication in relationships.

You Drive me Crazy

Eun-Sung (Lee Yoo-Young) works as a French interpreter. She is friends with Rae-Wan (Kim Sun-Ho). They have been friends for 8 years, since they were both college students. One night they sleep together and their relationship is never the same again.

It is a short and amazing drama. In my opinion, what made this simple story so beautiful is the impeccable chemistry between the protagonists. I know it's a pretty beaten plot, friends/lovers, but what's different about this one is that the protagonist is very unpredictable and conquers in a unique way. It's really funny to watch their relationship develop. She really drives him crazy.

One of my favourite short stories.

Page Turner

It is a three-part KBS Drama Special starring Kim So-hyun, Ji Soo and Shin Jae-ha. It tells the story of a piano prodigy Yoon Yoo-seul who goes blind after a car accident, and struggles to get her life back together with the help of Jung Cha-sik, an aspiring pianist and Seo Jin-mok, her former rival who later becomes a supporter.

This one is so good too. Again, I feel like watching more episodes because we need more time with them. I wanted to know more about their dreams and their achievements. And that's the only cons of this drama.

Quick shout out for the mums. Yoo Seul’s mom (Ye Ji Won) and Cha Sik’s mom (Hwang Young Hee). I loved them.

The Taste of Curry

Another KBS Drama Special. The curry restaurant "Cat's Restaurant" is run by Yu-Mi (Jeon Hye-Bin). She doesn't have many customers and one day, the restaurant is vandalized. Yu-Mi knocks down a suspect with her groceries and he passes out. When he wakes up, the guy (Hyun Woo) is unable to remember his own name. Until he regains his memory, the man helps out at Yu-Mi's restaurant.

This drama is about finding mutual healing and is quite sweet and emotional. Hyun Woo is a very charming and talented actor who proves here that he definitely deserves a leading role of his own.

If We Were a Season

It tells the story of Hye Rim (Chae Soo Bin) and Gi Seok (Jang Dong Yoon) who was born on the same day and grew up together being close friends. Their friendship is genuine and it looks like it will lead into a deeper relationship but then, one day Dong Kyeong (Jung Jin Young) came to their school and shake Hye Rim's world.

At only an hour long, I think this show did a solid job of telling its story. A quick highlight for the positives: Hye Rim and Gi Seok are adorable together. The way they bicker and tease each other and how they care about each other. Jung Jin Young, as the destabilizer of this relationship looks great, with those perfect features and charming smile.

The ending is open-ended and bittersweet but leaves with the hope that there is more to come, that there will be a new beginning.

Individualist Ms. Ji Young

Yeong has lived her whole life as an individualist. One day, she meets a man who is a totally opposite version of her. He lives for other people. Then these two very different people fall in love.

This is a cute romance between two people of polar opposites who change for the better after they meet. Even though it's only a two hour Show, the development of the story is well accomplished and the characters are very well constructed.

Min Hyo Rin is talented and the role is perfect for her, while Gong Myung...is such a sweet puppy and I can't imagine another actor in the role.

The Hymn of Death

The Hymn of Death tells the true story of Yun Sim-deok (Shin Hye-sun), Korea's first professional soprano singer, and her romance with playwright Kim U-jin (Lee Jong-suk). There are six half-hour episodes.

I don't really like dramas with unhappy endings but knowing it was a true story and knowing I would get to see two actors I love, I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. And of course Shin Hye-sun and Lee Jong-suk were perfect.

Kiss Goblin

12 episodes of 15 min. Ban Sook (Bae In Hyuk) is a 160-year-old goblin who wants to become human above all else. But to do so he must assume human form and kiss 10 different women to acquire different emotions.

I mainly got into this show because I liked some gifs I saw and found Bae In Hyuk quite attractive as a goblin. Bansuk is unnatural at first but becomes warmer, sweeter and more dreamy from the sixth episode onwards and I really loved it.

One of my favourite tropes is the forced closeness by living under the same roof, so I was quite pleased when Bansuk started living in Yeon Ah's flat and found the hyper-awareness parts quite delicious.

One Sunny Day

This drama is 2 hours long and is about Kim Ji-ho (So Ji-sub), a heartbroken man who goes to Jeju Island for work and meets this girl (Kim Ji-won) several times. They both get robbed and have to sleep in the same guest house. While staying on Jeju Island, she heals his broken heart and they fall in love.

It's a very sweet story although simple and restrained but I loved this little drama mainly because it had my beloved So Ji Sub as the lead actor.

Plus it's a drama that shows the wonderful island of Jeju in a way I've never seen it before in any show.

You Are Closer Than I Think

On their wedding day, a bride leaves a text message to the groom and she goes on their honeymoon alone. The groom tries to find his bride and learns something about her that he never expected. My review here.

Sitting at the piano, memories invade tormenting and haunting him, standing he hits the keys of the piano.

Pacing in silence, thoughts running rampant.

He watches her, following her.

Through the lens of his binoculars he yearns from afar.

She constantly infects his thoughts.

Sleep no reprieve as he dreams of the object of his obsession

Everything and everywhere is a constant reminder of his loss.

"Soon" he mutters, watching her sleeping.

From his parked vehicle, he sees her, eating dinner with her bitch Mother and sister.

'Fucking bitch, dining out with others, in their restaurant!'

"I'll wipe that smile off their faces"

"Soon".

Hidden by trees and shrubs he does his surveillance .

Her smile and laughter only serves his resolve to carry out his plan.

He watches as the sun moves and the rays illuminating her glorious mane.

Knowing soon he will be running his fingers through her hair once again.

As the sun moves, his target does as well, placing her blanket under the shade the tree offers.

As she eats her lunch, chicken and a vegetable plate and fruit, he watches. As she sips on her iced tea, her lips caressing the aluminum can, "soon" he whispers "our lips will blend as one".

As she throws food for a curious squirrel, he recalls how she fed him.

Exotic food foreplay.

"Fucking squirrel. She's mine!"

As she lays on the blanket chatting with her Mother and sister, he remembers times they shared an afternoon bodies entwined. A moan involuntarily escapes his lips.

Knowing his love she will need a bathroom break soon.

That's when he will strike!

"Soon!".

He waited patiently, devised his plan, nothing or no one will stand in his way. It's been a long arduous journey, mishaps and errors, the experiments finally came to fruition.

Today all his dedication and devotion will pay dividends.

"Right on cue" he smiles. As he sees her gathering rubbish and heading towards the bins, he knows her next destination.

He silently waits.

As she enters the park bathroom she is ambushed and dragged into a stall, a ketamine syringe quickly injected into her arm.

She quickly loses consciousness.

Leo kisses his love, gently swoops her into his arms and discreetly carries her to his vehicle, where he places her in the backseat.

"Now for stage two" he mutters.

The replacement is activated.

Walking towards the mother and sister.

Leo watches this all very important stage of his plan.

As the replacement takes his love spot, all seems well.

She is accepted.

The sister comments on the replacement's eyes.

"The sun" is the answer the sister receives.

The sister accepts this, but an uneasy feeling prevails.

Smiling, he hops into his vehicle and drives away with his love.

Leo drives the object of his desire to her new and forever home.

As he settles his unconscious love into her new home he kisses her forehead.

"This time my love. You will not say goodbye".

official ranking of the 5 kdramas I have watched so far so I don’t forget what I have seen:

1. the crowned clown

absolute banger 10/10. I watched the whole thing twice and a couple of episodes for a third time. it avoided the anachronistic pop music and slow-mo and romantic tropes simply for the sake of tropes. the political plot was interesting and the romantic plot suited the characters and situation. I also liked how dal-lae’s assault was handled and that there was time given to her recovery and not just getting revenge/punishment for the nobleman who did it. ha-sun my beloved so-woon my beloved dal-lae my beloved. yeo jin-goo king of acting king of double roles. music was really good and I listen to it sometimes during walks and on my way to/from work. when I rewatched I was delighted to see how many details and how much characterization in the first episode come up again later

2. extraordinary attorney woo

this was pretty cute overall. it also avoided the intrusive pop music and slow-mo and did not let the romantic subplot swallow the rest of the story (I think there were a couple of romantic moments that got slow-mo but it was rare enough and built up enough that I didn’t mind). I liked that they showed multiple autistic characters through the show and each was different. young-woo my beloved. park eun-bin queen of acting (she was one of the few good things about the king’s affection and I was impressed to see how different this character is from that one). dong geu-ra-mi and attorney jung were the best side characters but the others were good too. it felt like they made up attorney kwon’s story as they went along so sometimes he was just a general office jerk and sometimes he was almost cartoonishly Scheming Villain then suddenly he was attorney’s choi’s love interest?? odd

3. hotel del luna

this was the third kdrama I had seen (after the two below this one) and it was the best of those three. thank god I found the two above this bc if this was the peak then I’d have been sorely disappointed. this had potential and the world was cool but it got sniped by including the romantic tropes and slow-mo and other stuff like that. I’ve noticed that kdramas are similar to desi dramas and desi mass movies in that many stories get overtaken by the romantic subplot, which often does not actually suit the characters or world and is just checking off a list of romantic requirements. furthermore there is a random inclusion of slow mo shots, dramatic dialogues, and songs just for the sake of it, rather than for a purpose. the main actors were good (yeo jin-goo strikes again) and their dynamic was fun but the plot kinda lost itself in an effort to be Complex and Surprising

4/5. Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung & The King’s Affection

Putting these together bc they were both just. okay. the most I can give them is that I didn’t regret my time watching them and there were certain characters and episodes that were enjoyable. both shows suffered from anachronistic pop music, slow-mo shots, and romantic subplots that made NO dang sense. the plot seemed to be constructed as it went along. I liked that both had something to say about women in the palace in the joseon period but the plot often deviated from that in favor of generic romantic shenanigans. also based on how the show depicted it, I don’t think the writers for the king’s affection have ever crossdressed. which would be fine if they had actually spoken to people who do, but it doesn’t seem like they put any real research into it at all beyond “a crossdressing woman would be rude, emotionally closed off, and bind her chest”
