Fanfic No. 13: This Narrow World

Type of fic: Canon compliant, .5k words, oneshot, rated K

“The most unfairly stereotyped cabin at Camp Half-Blood speaks up for itself, sort of.”

Characters: The Aphrodite Cabin

June 29, 2007

Length and formatting: This is a oneshot, so naturally, it tends to be short, but it utilized the length to contribute to the storytelling and combined with the pacing made a compelling ending.

Content: This was more of a character exploration of the whole Aphrodite cabin but little vignettes of events tied the story together and kept the story interesting. The formatting, grammar, and tone were all well utilized.

Characterization: Characters in this fic are the entire Aphrodite cabin so their characterization is more of a ‘hive mind’ and explores a side of the Aphrodite cabin we won’t see much of until Piper arrives in The Lost Hero. Overall the characterization makes for a fascinating read and is one of the biggest features the fic has to offer.

Reception: There are 39 reviews that are all positive. There are also 57 favorites and 16 follows.

Author: Author Qoheleth is a seasoned fanfiction writer, with this fic from the start of their career. The account states the author is an “American male of mixed European extraction and legal voting age,” and has multiple accounts with work spread throughout. Author appears to be religious and invested in the quality of fanfiction based on his account. AN gives the typical disclaimer but that is really it. The account is still active as of 2022 and we were able to hold an interview with him!

Impact: I enjoyed this fic, it was very short but it is interesting to see fans delve into aspects of the Riordanverse that Rick hasn’t explored and, in this case, has yet to explore!
