Baby Isabela: *literally screams non-stop unless she’s with Pepa*
Julieta: Why does she like you so much?
Pepa: Hey, what can I say? I’m a natural mother.
Julieta: Yeah, a natural motherfucker.
(Cut to some years later)
Baby Luisa: *literally cries non-stop unless she’s with Agustín*
Julieta, grumbling: It’s not like I carried her for over nine months.
Agustín: It’s okay, Juli. I’m sure she’ll grow out of it in a few years. And she’ll have a new favourite, like Isabela does now. It might be you!
(Cut to some more years later)
Baby Mirabel: *perfectly content with Julieta*
Julieta: Oh! This is it! It’s finally happened. It only took three tries, but this child loves me—
Young Luisa: Um, give me back my baby sister, you monster! I just put her down to go to the potty! The fucking nerve!
Julieta:

The Innocence of Intimacy - 1
Tumblr media
[Synopsis: A series of one shots following the relationship of Julieta and Agustin Madrigal from the fledgling days of their relationship into the beyond.]
Read on AO3 or under the cut! ♥️
Julieta brought a hand to her stomach as she laid down next to Gus on the little rug in the treehouse, full from the picnic they shared, and sighed under her breath as she got comfortable and looked up at the stars. She had had the most wonderful evening thus far and that was all thanks to him making it so special. When she met him at the treehouse like he asked, she rolled her eyes when he showed up with beestings all over him. She could remember muttering something about him needing to be a lot more careful, but then he pulled out the most beautiful roses and she forgot why she was annoyed with him.
It was a year to the day they met – well, to the day he fell on his face and got healed by her for the first time – he told her when she inquired as to what the occasion was. Him being so sentimental made her laugh initially, but then she thought about how he remembered that when it had truly slipped her mind and it made her heart melt. She should have expected something like that from him in all fairness. He was so sweet, probably the sweetest man she knew, and him wanting to celebrate this moment made a lot of sense. She had loved having him a part of her life since he came to Encanto rather early last year.
He was the clumsiest hombre she had ever known and, admittedly, she had probably healed him more than anyone, but her seeing him so often helped them bond and he quickly became her best friend. He made life so fun and her long, hot days in the middle of town so much easier to get through. He was a very important part of her life and she couldn’t imagine it without him in it any longer. She didn’t want to either. A world without him was a world she did not want to live in and she didn’t mind admitting it. Her mamá didn’t care much for him, she had made that clear, but she felt that way about most people.
She no longer cared as much about what her mamá thought though.
She refused to let her dictate who she could and could not spend her time with any longer.
Turning her head in his direction to see him staring up at the stars above them, she smiled before she turned her attention back to them and connected them with her eyes to see the constellations. “I guess Pepa must be in a good mood for once,” She teased, lifting her hand from her stomach in order to tuck her arm beneath her head. “I love coming out here to look up at the estrellas, but her clouds get in the way most of the time and it makes it hard to see. They look beautiful tonight though, don’t you think?”
“Sí…”
She sensed he was feeling unsure of himself when he took a minute to respond and his voice trembled when he did, but when she turned her head again and felt him brush his fingertips against her own her breath caught in her throat. She lay still for a second, unsure if it was intentional or nothing but a slip of his hand, but there was no doubt in her mind when he caught her eye and did it once more. Her not moving her hand away helped him grow in confidence. He started to play with her fingers and she only moved closer to him, her fingers brushing against his own in response as she shared a smile with him. She could tell there was still a little uncertainty there. He still feared she was going to pull back at any moment and break the spell, but doing anything of the sort was truly the farthest thing from her mind.
She had wanted this for longer than she could remember.
He had been dropping hints for months now, he must have fallen for her – quite literally – as quickly as she did, making excuses to linger near her in town and standing close enough to her to brush her arm with his when they chatted. She wanted to be certain that that was what it was before she did anything about it though. She had been wrong in the past and it was so humiliating, an experience she had zero desire to repeat, but he was proving she was right to believe he wanted more than friendship from her. He wanted the same thing she did. He wanted her and knowing that filled her with so much happiness.
Once they had gone on like that for a little while, exchanging deft little touches, she brought her hand back slightly and the look of disappointment that flashed across his face did not go unnoticed by her. Rather than let him think the worst though, she pressed her palm flat against his and laced her fingers with his own before squeezing his hand when he swept his thumb across her knuckles. “I thought you had no idea.” He told her, his cheeks turning crimson as she chuckled gently and cuddled close to him.
“You are many, many things, amor, but subtle is not one of them.” She teased. “I always had a feeling.”
“You could have told me and put me out of my misery.” He replied with a slight pout.
She nodded. “I would have, but there are two reasons why I decided not to. One reason was because I had a hard time being sure if they really were hints or if I was making something out of nothing. When I realized that I was right, it became more about me knowing how important it was to you that you got to make the first move. I could easily have been the one to take your hand then. You have no idea how many times I have wanted to do that when we were together, but I would have been rushing you into it and it wouldn’t have been right. Leaving it to you meant it took a lot longer, but now you’re ready too.”
He brought his free hand up and moved her curls out of her face, tucking them gently behind her ear, and when he laid his hand on her cheek he stroked his thumb against her skin and sighed. “I want you so much,” His voice was soft as he studied her features. “But I already know your mamá won’t allow it.”
“Mi mamá has no reason to know,” She brought a hand to the side of his neck and moved closer to him until they were chest to chest, leaning her forehead against his and smiling at the feeling of his breath against her face as his hand fell to her waist. “I love her so much, I do, but she believes she can control more than she can. She thinks she can control me and who I fall in love with – I know she has been out trying to track down an hombre for me – but I refuse to let her. If we have to keep this a secret for the time being so we can be together, then fine. You make me so happy and I am not letting her ruin that.”
His hold on her waist tightened as he leaned back a little to look at her. “So…what now then?”
“We carry on like normal for a while,” She shrugged. “Mamá will catch on quickly if we spend too much time together in town. I think she already has her suspicions and that would only convince her further. We have this though,” She pats the wooden panels of the treehouse beneath them. “She knows nothing about this place. The only people that do are us and my hermanos. Félix too, probably, because I know Pepa sneaks him up here no matter what she says. None of them would run and tell mamá about us if they found out though. Not even Bruno. He might – no, he will – complain, but he won’t do that to me.”
“As long as I get to hold you, I’m contenta no matter what.” He admitted.
He released her hand then and opened his arms to her and she smiled, shuffling into them without so much as a second thought and lying her head on his chest as he wrapped them tight around her. She could feel him running a hand up and down her back as they laid there together in comfortable silence for a time, her own hand curled into his shirt, and her eyes fell shut when he buried a kiss in her curls.
She already knew it was going to be hard to keep their relationship a secret from her mother.
They would be discreet and, like she said, her brother and sister would keep their secret if they asked, but this was her mamá she was talking about. It was as though she had a sixth sense or something. In her childhood, she managed to know she and her hermanos were going to get themselves into trouble long before they even had the idea to do so. It was rare that things got by her, so there was the slight fear she would work it out before she was ready for her to, but she would stand her ground regardless.
She was almost an adult now, a fully grown woman, and she was allowed to make her own choices.
She was allowed to be with the man she loved if she wanted to be and that was exactly what she’d do.
No matter what her mamá said.

Encantober Day 27: Grave
So...I know it's almost March and Encantober ended months ago, but I promised myself I'd finish it, and here it is. I had more ideas for this prompt, but I lost my outline so I'll add them in once I post it to AO3. @encantober-official
Dewdrops clung to the grass as Alma made the habitual walk to where her Pedro lay. There was a slight chill in the early morning air; she pulled her shawl more tightly around her shoulders. She loved the stillness of those early hours before the town awoke.
A misty haze hung in the air, blurring the outlines of the headstones lining the graveyard. As she approached, the headstones grew clearer. The one marking Pedro’s grave was large and ornate; intricate designs carved around the edges. After the funeral, after the burial, after she’d had time to process the tragedy, she had insisted that the spot where he lay be marked with something truly special.
“Hola, Pedro,” she said simply, resting her hand along the top of the headstone. A caress meant for his cheek, given to cold damp stone. She smiled wistfully, taking in the familiar sight. Alma tried to visit regularly, but today was different. Today marked the anniversary of when her Pedro sacrificed himself to give her and their children the chance for a better life. Technically, it might have been yesterday. She wasn’t entirely sure. They couldn’t exactly check their pocket watches while they were fleeing for their lives. But she liked to think it happened after midnight. The oppressive darkness surrounding them sure made it feel like it was the middle of the night, and that was good enough for Alma. She couldn’t bear the thought that lives so important to her could enter and leave the world on the same day, brushing past each other like a breeze blowing by a candle flame.
So, as a family, they chose to commemorate it on October 18th. That way, the children could celebrate their birthday unmarred by the tragedy. It was better that way.
“Ay, Pedro…” Tears spilled down her cheek. “We had quite the year. Antonio got his gift. He can speak to animals. Isn’t that wonderful? You loved animals so much. I remember the adventures we had with those horses. With Toñito’s gift, it’s like part of you lives on inside him.” She shook her head, the corners of her lips tugging up into a smile. “But I’m sure you already knew that. No doubt you had a say in his gift.” It wasn’t an opinion she had ever dared to voice to anyone else, but Alma had a sneaking suspicion that Pedro had lived on in the house that had mysteriously sprung up in the valley across the river. Their Casita.
Clearing her throat, she continued. “We lost our gifts and got them back again. Mirabel…she saved us all. You would be so proud of her, Pedro. She’s just like you. Thanks to her, our magic is stronger than ever.” She sniffled, wiping the tears from her eyes. “And Brunito came home. We are all together again. Well…” she choked back a sob, “not all of us.”
She pulled a candle out of her pocket. It wasn’t the magical candle that had sustained them for all those years. Instead, it was an ordinary candle; one you could pass by a thousand times and not throw a second glance. But love had a way of turning the ordinary into something extraordinary, and it had been their love of candles that had first brought them together. Carefully, she lit the candle and placed it near the headstone. She closed her eyes, murmuring a quick prayer.
The sun climbed slowly up the horizon, streaking a brilliant yellow through the gray. Alma traced the letters on the headstone, bargaining with herself for more time. Couldn’t she stay just a little while longer? But in her heart, she knew she couldn’t. Giving the headstone one last lingering look, she nodded stiffly and turned to head back home.
The sun was higher in the sky than Julieta would have liked by the time she made it to her papá’s grave. Despite her best efforts, she just hadn’t been able to finish cooking all the food any earlier. Between tending to injuries and checking on her children, it had taken her far longer than anticipated to prepare the foods she wanted to bring with her. Over the years, through some clever sleuthing, she had learned what had been some of her papá’s favorite dishes. Every year, without fail, she had prepared them for him on today’s date. Although she knew the occasion they were marking, she preferred to think of it as saving him leftovers from their birthday, because that thought didn’t make her want to burst into tears.
Agustín accompanied her on her trek, both for moral support, and to help her carry the sheer amount of food she had prepared. “I, uh, think your papá will be really happy to get all this food.” He winced, hefting the basket higher on his arm to alleviate the soreness of the weight.
“Ay, Agustín, is the basket too heavy?” Julieta studied him concernedly. “Maybe I should have asked Luisa to help…”
“No!” His face turned red from exertion. “Let her rest, mi amor. She’s been working so hard lately. Ever since you got your gifts back, it’s like everyone forgot how to get by without them again.”
Julieta pressed her lips together, guarding her tongue. She knew he was right, but now wasn’t the time to fight that fight. Now she wanted to honor her papá and show him how much she loved him the best way she knew: through food.
Finally, they reached the graveyard. Agustín placed the basket on the ground with a heavy thud. It was filled to the brim with the foods Pedro had enjoyed most, both sweet and savory. His stomach gave an involuntary gurgle.
Julieta chuckled at the sound. “Is someone hungry?” She teased.
“No…” Agustín lied.
“I told you; you should have eaten before we came up here.” Julieta tutted, shaking her head good-naturedly.
“But I wasn’t hungry then!” He argued.
“So you are hungry now?” An amused smile played on her lips.
“Yes! I mean, no! I can’t think,” he complained, rubbing his temples.
“I’ll feed you as soon as we get home, how’s that?” She patted his cheek playfully. “But don’t even think about touching this food. It’s all for papá.”
“I would never!” He insisted, horrified at the assumption.
But Julieta had moved on from the banter, spreading out the various dishes in a cluster around the candle she saw tucked into the corner. Mamá must have been here already. Her candle was still burning brightly, she noted with a smile. Hopefully it would make it through the day.
Once she’d arranged everything to her liking, she addressed her papá. “Papá…we never got to know you growing up, but it was your sacrifice that allowed us to have such a good life.” The words came easily to her, having heard her mamá repeat them time and time again. “I know it’s not enough of a thank you, but I made all your favorites. It would have been better if you could taste them for real, if they could have helped you stay with us, but this will have to do.”
Agustín wrapped his arm around her shoulder, giving her a nod of approval. They stood there for a few minutes, basking in the faint warmth of the morning sun before Julieta bid her papá farewell and they headed back.

I love the headcanon that everyone in the Encanto fandom seems to have that Agustín would constantly be at Julieta's stall to be healed and that's how they met and fell in love, I really do, but have we considered the potential of the opposite idea?
Like, what if Agustín absolutely refused to go see Julieta because he believed he was nothing but a problem and accudent waiting to happen and didn't want to burden anyone else, least of all the most magical and prettiest girl in town? And Julieta, who can't stand to see others in pain, is being driven mad by this boy who clearly needs healing but will not let her help him.
Over time it becomes commonplace for the residents of the town to see the sweet, proper Julieta Madrigal chasing a clumsy boy around the square with a buñuelo in hand, yelling for him to "eat the food already, or I swear on the Miracle I will tie you up and shove it down your throat!" While Agustín dodges and hides like a parkour expert until falling into the fountain and breaking his nose. Pepa and Bruno are laughing so hard they have to hold each other up and even Alma cracks a smile.

Day Twelve: Nerves
Oh my goodness...sometimes you just gotta think outside the honey pot.
Tumblr media
Day Twelve: Nerves
Julieta handed off a cookie to the small child in front of her. They took a bite, and the scrapes and cuts they’d acquired while playing healed without a trace of them ever being there. The little one looked up at her, smiled and shouted, “Mamá! No more ouchie!”
“That’s right mi vida, no need to shout. Now please thank the Señora.”
“Thank you!” he said just as loudly.
His mother sighed as she took his hand. “Come along, Mariano. Time enough to take a bath before I make supper for your Papí.”
Mariano waved to her, and Julieta waved back. She turned and took a step back. “Aye, Agustín, you trying to give me a heart attack?” He only shook his head, since his face was very swollen at the moment, and he couldn’t actually talk. “Can you open your mouth at all?”
He shrugged, and Julieta felt just a tad nervous. Her husband’s encounters with the bees were getting worse with each incident, and she couldn't heal him if he wasn’t able to eat. “Come on then,” she said as packed the last of her things. “Let’s get you home.”
Since her husband insisted on carrying most of what she had, Julieta pushed aside her worry and thought about how to get him what he needed. She had him sit on the patio and Julieta came upon an idea and after dropping off some things. She made some tea, then opened a cabinet and pulled out some honey and a spoon. She poured him a cup and added a dollop of honey and lemon to it. She forgot to bring a plate, so put the spoon in her mouth to hold it. He watched her every move and seemed to be smiling. It was hard to tell, though. She raised the cup, and he tried to drink some of it, but that was just not working. Julieta took the spoon out of her mouth and set it on the table. She licked her lip and decided on plan B.
Plan B was a total win as she pulled back and said, “Are you okay now?”
Agustín cleared his throat and said, “No, I’ve never been worse. Maybe you should try again?”
So she did.

During my millionth rewatch of Encanto, I noticed that there is a framed picture of everyone’s favorite dilf—, I mean, Agustín, just by himself and I love that for him and for us.

Like if Julieta had a desk job, this photo would be sitting on her desk. 😭🥹🥸
Also is this the photo?? Because that’s what it looks like and I love it even more.
