3.Mikey and Nicky
A character piece about two gangster who are best friends. The movie is basically that old saying "With friends like these who needs enemies " ,with a great dynamic between Peter Falk and John Cassevetes

2.Elvira Mistress of the Dark
This movie is great and I am not surprised it is aclassic among the LGBTQ community . It is both highly entertaining but you can tell this is a personal film
Tumblr media
1.Guillermo Del Toros Pinocchio
A beautifully animated and voice acted telling of the classic tale of Pinocchio but exploring what it is to be mortal ,the relation ship between fathers and sons ,and oh yeah the villains are literal fascists' .I saw some people who were shocked by this....They clearly dont follow the career of Guillermo Del Toro .I was overtaken by how beautiful and emotional this film was and it is my favorite film I saw this year

i dont think most people will lke straight line crazy and write off the script. and the critics did. and i get it its another LBJ play (as I call them) where a celebrated actor goes "tis i! i am a very famous actor and going to play a problematic figure and i will bluster about and put my fingers in my belt loops!" and i dont think a lot of my theatre friends will like it for that.
but.... it's a really good and well written one of those. there are a couple of liberties. there is a character of a young black woman who was just hired by moses and really rips him a new one for what he did in the south bronx. but honestly- it worked. yes, that never would have happened in 1956 but this IS a dramatization and it functioned well. but it examines a lot of things i am VERY interested in. (that's for a other post). and it examines them very, very well.
and the entire cast is SO GOOD. usually these star vehicles dont allow the cast to shine. and i was shocked that this did. yes ralph fiennes is always big and dominating on stage (and yes- he is absolutely terrific) but the supporting cast gets so much to do and so many great moments as well. Judith Roddy is so good and during Danny Webb's scene I thought "if he doesn't get exit applause I am starting it". He got it btw
Also I liked the direction a lot. And the set!

roderick, roddy to his friends, was born in grampleton to martin and kim wright, and he was adored by his parents. not long after, though, roni came along, and they took a little bit of spotlight from roddy. however, the man never held it against his sibling.
since they were so close in age, roddy and roni were inseparable, often spending all their time together as opposed to spending them with other kids. still, roddy was fairly popular in middle and high school due to his good looks. he rose high in the ranks.
he was valedictorian at his school, and he went on to get his bachelor’s in pre-med, graduating summa cum laude from his choice of college. for med school, he traveled to zuzu city, and in zuzu city, he met judith pascal. he fell absolutely in love with her, and just before he started his residency, he asked her to marry him.
it was not to last, as during his residency, he had a particularly hard death on his hands. a young woman had died from her wounds in a car accident. rod had been unable to save her, and he took her death pretty hard. unable to deal with that and unable to get therapy, his relationships started to fall apart. he finished his residency having no friends and no fiance. he had broken the engagement off.
as soon as he could, he dipped to pelican town, wanting someplace to practice easy medicine without so much death. he could have gone back to grampleton, but he didn’t want to see his parents and feel what he perceived as disappointment. so, he just moved away and cut contact with most everyone except his family.
he lives in pelican town now, behind pierre’s general store and close to the clinic. he is nice and friendly to everyone, finally able to have gotten some therapy in his last years of residency. he can at least socialize and go back to some normalcy, but he’s still pretty scarred from his past.

Knives in Hens in Donmar Warehouse. Review
Tumblr media
Play by David Harrower. Directed by Yaël Farber. Cast: Judith Roddy, Christian Cooke, Matt Ryan.
Somewhere in the village. In the time before industrial boom and technological progress. A ploughman and his wife live a simple life. Meeting with hated local miller changes everything. The game, the awakening begins. Lust, desire, attraction, power, knowledge and understanding things and their world dominates their relations. Driven through darkness under the shadow of the grinding stone they leap headfirst into darkness... or maybe into the light? Questioning everything they discover and try to name what has been unnamed.
‘Knives in Hens’ is odd. Not your typical play - neither modern, nor Shakespeare’s alike. It’s out of time yet extremely present. It’s magical. Mesmerizing. Surprising. Tension is tangible. And actors are on top of their game: mad, frantic, deliver most fascinating performance. Characters they play are torn by feelings and sensations they taste the new ground, tease, bend and cross the boundaries in this dark, gloomy world showing that some desires are with humans for ever and are the primal drive for many [unexpected] turns.
The chemistry between three actors is electric, it sparkles, explodes. Danger, light and darkness are bound together with an excellent performance.
