It’s been a while since my last “now reading” post, but it took me a long-ass time to finish reading The Fountainhead (and as the author of this book pictured here is known for saying on Crash Course, “It’s not swearing if you’re talking about a donkey.”) As you can see, my next book is Looking for Alaska by John Green. I’ve said before I’m more familiar with the Green brothers’ work on Crash Course and Vlogbrothers, but this will be my first attempt at reading one of their books. When you want to cry over a book but can't because you're too tired to cry and no one you know has read tthe book and now you're alone thinking about the ending and just how relatable the main character is and you just want to talk about it without spoiling it, Hank green oh god I realize now just how awful I am. As an artist so many of us turn ourselves into tools to make the world better, forgetting that we are human, we become our jobs, but we are so many things, we are memories, hopes, dreams, connections, beauty, love, cheesy, we can be incredible when we work together. John Green really stepped out of his comfort zone for this one, and it doesn’t show at all. Now, this book came out a while ago but I just have to review it. What an amazing step forward for this author. He’s usually confined himself to the walls of things he’s generally comfortable talking about. Things that don’t personally effect him that much. But this story isn’t his classic romance, this delves into the deep and dirty trenches of mental health. Yes, there’s a love story in it, but I see that as more of a b-plot in this story that’s more of an exposé on mental illness. As Greens main demographic also happens to be the main demographic for people to romanticize mental illness, this is an extremely important subject to touch on, and he did so perfectly. This book stares you in the face and says “this is torture, you don’t want to have this or be like me. This isn’t pretty.” And I love it. Our main character is interesting and intriguing and then you have John Greens specialty - making the side characters extremely 3 dimensional. I’ve gotta tell you, I fell in love with all of the side characters here. They’re all so amazing, they have their troubles, their personalities, their talents, their faults. I mean, they show so much emotion and humanity. It’s something that so many authors leave out when writing side characters but that’s a detail that truly counts. And the actual story. Well, I’m not going to spoil anything, but I’ll just tell you, you will NOT be able to put this book down. So interesting, it pulls you in quick and sharp, and you don’t even realize how fast your eyes are scanning the page to see what comes next. This book is over all incredible.
