Herbert Mundin, Diana Wynyard, Clive Brook, and Una O'Connor in Cavalcade (Frank Lloyd, 1933)
Cast: Diana Wynyard, Clive Brook, Una O'Connor, Herbert Mundin, Beryl Mercer, Irene Browne, Tempe Pigott, Merle Tottenham, Frank Lawton, Ursula Jeans. Screenplay: Reginald Berkeley, based on a play by Noël Coward. Cinematography: John F. Seitz. Art direction: William S. Darling. Film editing: Margaret Clancey.
There are lots of forgettable best picture Oscar winners: Who today watches The Great Ziegfeld (Robert Z. Leonard, 1936), The Life of Emile Zola (William Dieterle, 1937), or Gentleman's Agreement (Elia Kazan, 1947)? But Cavalcade may be the most forgettable (and forgotten) of them all. Based on a play by Noël Coward adapted by Reginald Berkeley and Sonya Levien, it's the saga of 33 years in the lives of a wealthy London couple, Robert (Clive Brook) and Jane Marryot (Diana Wynyard). Its portrait of their lives and the lives of their servants may have inspired the popular British TV series Upstairs Downstairs, and through it the even more popular Downton Abbey, both of which cover pretty much the same time period. In Cavalcade, as in the two TV series, the families suffer losses from the sinking of the Titanic and from World War I, and experience the social upheaval of a changing class system. But Cavalcade tries to cram it all into less than two hours, and tends to be more blatantly nostalgic about the passing scene. Unlike the creators of the later TV series, Coward and his adapters didn't have the benefit in 1933 of seeing what effect the events of the first third of the twentieth century would have on Britain and the world. It settles for a bit of prophecy in the form of a montage in which various talking heads rant about disarmament, communism, atheism, Christianity, and other ideologies, including a rather corny scene in a louche night club where same-sex couples seem to be on the verge of making out. (The film is pre-Code, so the strictures against depicting homosexuality haven't kicked in yet, though it's clear that the film -- despite Coward's own sexual orientation -- disapproves of it.) In addition to the best picture Oscar, Cavalcade also won a second Oscar for its director, Frank Lloyd, who had been the first director to be so honored, for The Divine Lady (1929). Wynyard also received a nomination for best actress, losing to a newcomer, Katharine Hepburn in Morning Glory (Lowell Sherman, 1933). Wynyard had a more successful career on stage than in movies. In Cavalcade she tries to register emotion by staring meditatively into the middle distance, often seeming like she has spotted something troubling on the wallpaper. The rest of the cast includes Herbert Mundin and Una O'Connor as the Marryots' servants, and Frank Lawton as Joe Marryot, the younger son, all three of whom would be reunited in a much better movie, David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935). For the record, some of the films that Cavalcade beat for best picture include 42nd Street (Lloyd Bacon), I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (Mervyn LeRoy), and Little Women (Cukor), all of which are more highly watchable today.

Ace full of Kings
Welcome to suburbia land and the wealth of suburban lifestyle, although on the surface it may have looked like nothing, boring even, there was good poker players and poker nights, Sunday baseball games were always fun even if it's just kids, and every Wednesday at the local bar karaoke nights entertained the best and worst singers the neighborhood had, there was different stuff once you started digging in it, once you got acquainted with the place and its people most of all, and you know anywhere is worth it if you find good poker players
Tonight we are having a poker night in a dimly lit small backroom at Harris, smoke filled with the cigars that Barnes procured from an army buddy selling them on the low from Puerto Rico where he was posted, the room had every kind of Seahawks team memorabilia you could think of, signed jerseys and footballs, players cards, framed press articles, and a heap of photographs with the players and staff plastered the walls almost entirely, a lifetime collection that spilled to a few large boxes stacked one on top of the other, as a cop Harris had his entries, originally from Seattle before he bailed after getting in serious trouble with organized crime, it even had trophy replicas on a shelve, complete with Seahawks branded coffee mugs and coffee machine
Seahawks was "the coolest name for a football team" and the retired street cop was a huge fan, and of course it had the crackling police radio noise in the background because that's what you would expect from a retired street cop, to stay put even if, a couple of years ago we had invested in a proper poker table, our pride and joy, professional green mat and cup holders, the bar well it wasn't much, but Harris kept it filled with his rake although he didn't like to hear that word
Meet the players, or the demonstration that maybe prosperity isn't what it used to be, that the neighborhood isn't what it used to be, life in general, but that poker can heal all wounds, imagine that a poker night at your neighbor's poker room, a bottle of the finest whiskey money could buy for under 100 Dollars, put together around the fine looking table more than a hundred years of life experience, retirees, O’Brian retired fireman, Harris still on police radio, Brown a retail store manager, a black man who fought his way in life arguing to too many customers that he was the store's manager, and Barnes a Vietnam vet with two rounds of duty under his belt and the scars to prove it
Billy Perkins wasn't half their age but they made a place for him because he was good at poker, above all they wanted to know why he wasn't not good at money other than the chips that he racked often, and above all if he realized that a man his age of his character can be anything he wanted in life, he was on to something big that's what they all thought of him
I'll have that widow hand, No Billy Perkins you can't have that Why not? You're not even married, Well look at me it's my winning hand, What do you know it's your winning hand? See it's two pairs already, say I score a full and a pair, I don't say nobody says that replied Barnes, Or 4 of a kind, ace high Come on now, Why come on, you're not even looking at your hand, don't like what you see? I have a better hand! What you're raising now, Of course am raising, am raising your better hand, Watch out the kid is on a roll
That fishing contest Billy how did it go? asked Harris, We won it, uncle Joe is the best, sold the fish for ten grands I made half of it, That's good money what are you going to do with, repaint the house I guess its been due for a while, Get a new lawnmower too your front yard looks like a jungle he added while fetching a couple of new cards, I was thinking of fixing it, That's what you said last week and the week before that
O’Brien took a long look at Perkins before deciding to share what he had in mind, tell me Perkins that O'Connor guy he's a big shot at the company where you work right? A big shot he's The big shot, used to be president and chairman of the board, Something is fishy about the whole thing, Such as? I've been told that propane tank was installed by a top notch utility business, checked it regularly, last time they did they replaced every joint gave the installation a clean bill of health, 3 months later the whole place blows up like a gas station on fire, wasn't supposed to happen like that
Retired Lt Harris who had listened on while staring at his hand paused his drink, see what you just described is murder for hire, come on now are we saying that rich folk homes don't blow up Brown interjected Brown, listen to the man Harris replied he said wasn't supposed to happen, But still it was a gas leak that did it am I correct, atleast that's what I read on the newspaper, Well there's guys that are into that stuff and they're paid big bucks to make murders for hires look like an accident
I didn't say a word more and kept focused on building my hand, thinking about what just been said, how O'Connor, Sullivan and Richardson had died within weeks, and so who benefited the most, Dillinger and again Dillinger who had an opening for president and chairman of the board, meanwhile he could push back indefinitely his retirement on the grounds that his succession had been hampered
Maybe if they fixed it wrong Brown went on, a botched job, you guys are always trying to make the stuff that happens in this city into a police movie, what do you know about gas Clayton replied O’Brien, what do I know about gas I used to run a retail store, it smells Clayton gas smells, see said Harris, the botched job might be O'Connor instead, did cops drop by at the company? They did answered Perkins coolly, keeping to himself that it wasn't about O'Connor that they showed up and that the murder count at Allstate was already 2 or 3 now by the looks of it, See no wonder, you have two guys who spent too many time doing this and they're saying that somebody punched that propane tank, Not the tank no that can leave traces remarked O'Brien, the joints are more likely
Because they would burn in the fire? Right it's not your everyday plastics but with that kind of temperature they will, If they don't catch who's behind this it's going to be another perfect murder, Perfect murder? That stuff exists? replied Brown, Oh yes it does and it's nothing that we advertise to people, Because you guys can't catch the murderer? No it's worse than that Clayton, we can't prove that it was a murder
Hey Barnes pour me a drink What's the occasion kid, Am doubling the raise, What for? For everyone's been throwing cards like they're yesterday's newspapers, But not the cards you want now Perkins, True haven't seen those, madam widow here is going to hand them right next, Ugly little weasel, Now now what's wrong with having a little drink
What on earth was he up to, a bigger pay no he was already well off, they all were, there had to be something else far more potent and sinister to justify his deadly power play, most of all the risks he took, Allstate was no small fish, 3rd largest insurance company amongst those who operated solely in the U.S, worth tens of billions
Am going all in gentlemen, Are you kidding us! It's several rounds we've been doubling that raise! Sergeant It's time to suck in the pain, What is it with suck in the pain, My favorite part, the single most telling line about war and about life, it's in the movie, What movie again? Barnes movie war movie, tell us about the alligators Barnes, There was no alligators in Vietnam, You sure look like you've been bitten by one, How come you're not a rich guy already since you're so cocky asked Barnes? Am hood rich, every week I come here and rack those chips Not always no, True sometimes I sit next to the bottle, Ouch
So? Am folding, Same here, Same, Barnes you're in? Let's see what you have, what I have is all in want to go all in? Not this time but I'll get you next time ugly weasel, I guess that's it, was nice playing you gentlemen partners, always a pleasure, Not so fast partner Perkins you have to pay the house, There you go Harris make my day, It's every other week that you always keep forgetting, But you don't
Let's see that hand you have, Does anybody look into a grave before getting in, That's it he had nothing but those two pairs, who let you sit next to the dealer anyways, The dealer sat next to me what should I do tell him to bounce, You think you're so clever, Look at you, you sat next to the bottle, Bluffers come with big mouths, Well you should have known Harris, He's been robbing us like that when he has nothing going he bluffs, Then I might have something going, Keep bluffing Perkins
How much did you make? Let's see there's a couple of upcoming games and I have to fork the beer cases at Barnes, Clayton asked me to take his car to the car wash stick me with bill plus extra for the leather chairs, O’Brien well what do you know he's got groceries he wants me to pick up any given Sunday, and Harris just raked me, Don't say that word, Why it's true, Keep things going for the club, Oh it's a club now? What do you think look at all the decoration
Was he after all of it why… Pretty much anyone else could arrive to the same conclusion as I did, police included especially the police, making him the prime suspect, or maybe in the back of his mind he thought he was so cunning that he could pull his moves without so much as a citation, so far he had succeeded that's the thing… The papers said the blast was an accident, and Richardson and Sullivan seemingly killed each others
That hand Perkins? It's there on the table, Can we? Go ahead what's the poker night for, What does he have? Aces full of kings!, Ugly little weasel, Keep going Perkins you'll get places, So he wasn't bluffing after all? Yeah it's the same to me Clayton, He's got something this young fellow, We agree on that, we said it over and over again, but he doesn't seem to know what it is himself, He's a good kid Harris he will find out when it's time, He doesn't look in a hurry and what do you know about time, it flies
Look at the hand that he has continued O'Brien, didn't even show it what does tell us about him Harris, Keeping his cards close to his chest, knows best in life than to show his cards and when you know that his age in life you already know a great deal, I think paused Clayton, no I am convinced that he can be anything he wants in life, Well he's got us posted about what it's going to be replied Harris

FOM BLOG: ACCRINGTON STANLEY 0-1 GILLINGHAM
My Thoughts On Accrington Stanley 0-1 Gillingham..........
After Gillingham had lost 3-1 to Northampton Town, 1-0 against Plymouth Argyle and 1-0 against Burton Albion, and especially after the 1-0 home defeat against Burton Albion, No-one was confidant that Gillingham could get a result against Accrington Stanley, and with Gillingham playing two away matches in a row against two very good sides in Accrington Stanley and Lincoln City (The Lincoln City Away Match Was Postponed Because Of A Water-Logged Pitch) If Gillingham were to lose both matches and lose five league games in a row, then serious questions were going to be asked regarding Steve Evans future as Gillingham Manager and whether if a managerial change is required to ensure that Gillingham maintained there League One Status ??? - A Draw would at least stop the rot, and pre-match, If someone offered Gillingham Supporters A 1-1 Draw, we would have taken that, and even the most optimistic of Gillingham Supporters were only predicting a draw, So to see Gillingham pick up all three points and keep a clean sheet against a very good Accrington Stanley Side is fantastic, and these three points are three points which were completely unexpected.
This Was How Gillingham Lined Up Against Accrington Stanley On Saturday,,,,,, Jack Bonham, Ryan Jackson, Jack Tucker, Connor Ogilvie, Tom O'Connor, Callum Slattery, Alex MacDonald, Jordan Graham, Olly Lee, Kyle Dempsey, Vadaine Oliver Substitutes Joe Walsh (GK), Robbie McKenzie, Matty Willock, Stuart O'Keefe, Jacob Mellis, Tyreke Johnson and John Akinde - After seeing Gillingham's Starting Line Up Confirmed On Social Media, I mentioned the following On Twitter,,,,, Hopefully Slattery and Lee both starting will see Gills try and keep the ball on the deck more rather then over-relying on the long balls to Vadaine Oliver, It's great to have the option to knock the ball long to Oliver, But we have the players in the line up to retain possession.
There were doubts that this match was going to go ahead, but when the team sheets were announced, and we saw photo's of the pitch on Accrington Stanley's Official Account, then those doubts were clarified and Accrington Stanley V Gillingham was going to go ahead, and I tend to buy My I Follow Match Pass on the day of the, but this time, I waited for the team-sheet to be announced before buying my match-pass, just to make sure that there was no postponement, If supporters were going to Accrington Stanley V Gillingham, I would be hoping for a pitch inspection at the earliest possible time, so that we knew for sure if the match was going to go ahead, or, if the match was going to be called off, also, A Away Trip To Accrington Stanley is a away trip you want to be doing for A Saturday Afternoon League Game, rather then making the long trip On A Tuesday Night - especially if your making that long trip to Accrington Stanley on A Tuesday Night In January.
And as for how well Gillingham played against Accrington Stanley, I was impressed with our performance, we wanted to see Gillingham respond to that dreadful 1-0 defeat against Burton Albion, and that is precisely what we saw on Saturday, If Gillingham drew 1-1, and we saw the same level of performance we saw from the players at the weekend, we can take the encouraging sign's from that performance into the next three league games against Lincoln City, Rochdale and Crewe Alexandra - Now Rochdale, Crewe Alexandra and Sunderland - But we saw a encouraging performance, Gillingham pick up all three points, Gillingham kept a clean sheet, and we saw a very good team performance where you could name seven or eight players as serious contenders for The Man Of The Match Award, two of those seven or eight candidates would be Olly Lee and Callum Slattery, with both players putting in encouraging displays on there debuts for The Gills.
FIRST HALF:
But things could have been so different if Accrington Stanley scored first, and that is almost what happened in the sixth minute of the match when Dion Charles had let the ball run through to Colby Bishop from A Accrington Stanley Throw On, And Colby Bishop plays a return pass through to Dion Charles, And Dion Charles takes one touch to control the ball and another touch to smash the ball goal-wards and Jack Bonham was quick off his goal-line to narrow the angle to make a very brave save, Because Jack Bonham had saved the ball with his face and deflect the ball out of play for A Accrington Stanley Corner Kick - It is important to note that Dion Charles and Colby Bishop were both on the score-sheet when Accrington Stanley won 2-0 against Gillingham At Priestfield Stadium, and both strikers had caused Gillingham a lot of problems that evening, and both strikers look likely to cause Gillingham more problems defensively in this fixture as well.
And having almost opened the scoring with that effort on goal from Dion Charles, Gillingham managed to hit Accrington Stanley on the counter attack, And Jordan Graham managed to pick out Olly Lee with a low diagonal cross towards the far post, And Olly Lee's first time shot towards goal hits the side netting from a very a acute angle, Had Jordan Graham crossed earlier, then maybe Olly Lee could have opened the scoring for The Gills, The next goal-scoring opportunity see's Alex MacDonald test Nathan Baxter in-between the sticks, Ryan Jackson's long throw is not dealt with and Connor Ogilvie's initial effort on goal is blocked, And Connor Ogilvie manages to pass the ball square to Alex MacDonald inside Accrington Stanley’s Penalty Area, And Alex MacDonald see’s his shot towards goal saved by Nathan Baxter and Accrington Stanley manage to clear there lines.
Eleven Minutes Into The Match, And Matt Butcher is down on the deck and requires treatment after a collision with Callum Slattery, and this head collision eventually lead to Matt Butcher having to be substituted, Accrington Stanley Chairman Andy Holt has strongly criticised The Football League for the huge financial gap between The Championship, League One and League Two, and has also been critical of The Premier League, But he thought Callum Slattery should have been sent off for the aerial challenge with Matt Butcher, which I completely disagree with, the ball was there to be won, and Matt Butcher is taller then Callum Slattery and Callum Slattery won the ball in the air.
Fifteen Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had the chance to open the scoring, Callum Slattery times his sliding challenge to perfection, and Olly Lee lays the ball off to Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball square to Alex MacDonald, And Alex MacDonald takes a touch to control the ball before running forwards in possession of the ball, And Alex MacDonald’s shot towards goal takes a slight deflection off Seamus Conneely, and Nathan Baxter has to dive at full stretch to turn the ball around the post at the expense of conceding a corner kick - Callum Slattery, Olly Lee, Kyle Dempsey and Alex MacDonald were all involved in the build up to that goal-scoring opportunity, and it was great to see Alex MacDonald get a shot off towards goal from outside the penalty area as well.
Thirty Four Minutes Into The Match, And Accrington Stanley are awarded a free kick after Connor Ogilvie had been penalised for a foul on Dion Charles, And Callum Slattery prevented Accrington Stanley from taking a quick free kick, But Accrington Stanley came close to taking the lead from this set play, Sean McConville whips in a high and hanging cross into the heart of Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Michael Nottingham chests the ball under control but Connor Ogilvie manages to partially clear the ball towards the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, and Seamus Conneely’s first time fiercely driven shot towards goal fails to hit the target, and that was the chance for Accrington Stanley to take the lead.
Forty Four Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham were awarded a free kick because Ross Sykes was penalised for a foul on Jordan Graham, And The Accrington Commentary Team kept making it a big deal about why Ross Sykes was booked, the fact that Ross Sykes booted the ball fifty yards away in frustration was why he was booked, and this kept being brought up in reference to every foul made throughout the rest of the match, and from the resulting free kick, Jordan Graham whips in a dangerous cross towards the edge of Accrington Stanley’s Penalty Area, and the ball is headed partially clear towards Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball before trying to pick out Jordan Graham with a cross-field cross pass, and Ross Sykes manages to intercept the ball before passing the ball short towards Dion Charles, And Dion Charles passes the ball down the line towards Ross Sykes, And Ross Sykes tries to pick out Colby Bishop with a cross towards the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, and Jack Tucker wins the initial aerial challenge and Callum Slattery wins the second aerial challenge up against Jon Russell, And Alex MacDonald is on to the loose ball for The Gills, And Alex MacDonald manages to pick out Jordan Graham with a diagonal cross-field cross ball down the left side of the pitch in Accrington Stanley’s Final Third, And Jordan Graham gets the ball under control, runs inside Accrington Stanley’s Penalty Area in possession of the ball and Jordan Graham passes the ball centrally to Alex MacDonald, And Alex MacDonald flicks the ball back towards Kyle Dempsey, who curls the ball into the far right corner of the net with a fantastic first time finish and there was nothing that Nathan Baxter could do about that to prevent Gillingham from taking the lead - ACCRINGTON STANLEY 0-1 GILLINGHAM
Fantastic goal from The Gills, and just before half time as well, and with Alex MacDonald seeing two efforts on goal saved and Olly Lee hitting the side netting, and with the way Gillingham have performed in the first half, then Gillingham deserved to go in at half time with a one goal lead, and the goal Kyle Dempsey scored was superb as well, And Kyle Dempsey is a player who has put in some noticeable performances in recent weeks and Kyle Dempsey has scored for Gillingham against Doncaster Rovers, Northampton Town and now against Accrington Stanley, Dempsey is getting himself on the score-sheet on a regular basis for The Gills.
HALF TIME: ACCRINGTON STANLEY 0-1 GILLINGHAM
I uploaded the following status update on to Social Media At Half Time,,,,, HALF TIME: ACCRINGTON STANLEY 0-1 GILLINGHAM - Kyle Dempsey open's the scoring for Gillingham right on half time, and that goal perhaps reflects on Gillingham's first half performance as a whole, Because Gillingham have put in a very encouraging performance in the first half. Alex MacDonald has seen two efforts on goal saved by Nathan Baxter, And The Accrington Stanley Goalkeeper had to save a awkward cross from Jordan Graham in the opening stages of the match, Olly Lee has seen his shot hit the side netting from a acute angle from Graham's cross. Slattery's pass to Oliver was also saved, But the goal from Dempsey capped off a very encouraging first half performance from The Gills, and I have especially liked the work from Slattery Lee Dempsey Graham & MacDonald in midfield, Lee and Slattery have added quality in midfield, Accrington Stanley have had chances to score, Charles shot on target was saved by Bonham, Conneely's effort on goal from distance has failed to hit the target, Bonham has had to clear a through-ball to Charles out for a throw on, And Accrington have looked a threat from set plays.
I also mentioned the following in another tweet,,,, Graham, Slattery, Dempsey, Lee and MacDonald have all been excellent in midfield today and Alex MacDonald is unlucky not to get himself on the score-sheet with both of his efforts on goal saved by Baxter. - The five man midfield of Jordan Graham, Alex MacDonald, Kyle Dempsey, along with new signings Olly Lee and Callum Slattery have added quality into Gillingham’s Midfield, quality which perhaps has been lacking at times in the last three matches against Northampton Town, Plymouth Argyle and Burton Albion, Now Gillingham have had chances to score in all three matches, but what makes the performance against Accrington Stanley very encouraging is the fact that Nathan Baxter has made a few saves to keep Accrington Stanley in this match and Gillingham perhaps can consider themselves unfortunate to only be winning this match 1-0 at half time.
SECOND HALF:
Forty Eight Minutes Into The Match, And Ryan Jackson has to kick the ball out of play for A Accrington Stanley Corner Kick as Joe Pritchard was looking to breakthrough inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Accrington Stanley should have equalised, Sean McConville whips in a high and hanging cross towards the far post and Michael Nottingham’s Header crashes against the crossbar and Olly Lee smashes the ball clear and away from danger for The Gills, and that was the chance for Accrington Stanley to score the equaliser, And In The Fifty Second Minute Of The Match, Accrington Stanley had the chance to level the game up at 1-1 again, again, this chance was created from a set play as Sean McConville whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Cameron Burgess’s header fails to hit the target and the ball goes just wide of the far right post, And Accrington Stanley are causing Gillingham problems defensively from corner kicks.
Sixty Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had the chance to go 2-0 up, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and although Vadaine Oliver misses the aerial challenge, the ball bounces through to Alex MacDonald down the left side of the pitch, And Alex MacDonald manages to get the ball under control before evading the attempted challenge from Michael Nottingham, And Alex MacDonald whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Defender Ross Sykes headers the ball partially clear and away from goal and Olly Lee gets to the loose ball first and runs away from goal towards the byline before passing the ball back towards Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball short to Callum Slattery, And Callum Slattery’s squared pass towards Kyle Dempsey wasn’t the best, But Kyle Dempsey manages to evade the attempted challenge and run forwards in possession of the ball towards the edge of Accrington Stanley’s Penalty Area, And Kyle Dempsey’s fiercely driven effort towards goal is brilliantly saved by Nathan Baxter, And Nathan Baxter manages to parry the ball around the post and out of play for A Gillingham Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Tom O’Connor’s in-swinging cross towards the far post is to high for Jack Tucker to get on the end of and the ball goes out of play for A Accrington Stanley Goal-Kick.
Eighty Two Minutes Into The Match, And Ryan Jackson blocks Ryan Cassidy’s shot out of play for A Accrington Stanley Corner Kick, As The Accrington Stanley Substitute tries to level the match up at 1-1, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Accrington Stanley should have equalised, Sean McConville whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Michael Nottingham’s glancing header fails to hit the target and goes wide of the far right post, and another corner kick from the home side has not been capitalised on and Gillingham are trying to hang on to that slender 1-0 advantage.
Eighty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham make there first substitution as John Akinde comes on to replace Vadaine Oliver, Vadaine Oliver may have not got himself on the score-sheet, but his overall contribution to how well Gillingham have performed against Accrington Stanley cannot be under-estimated, Gillingham are sticking with the five man midfield of Jordan Graham, Olly Lee, Callum Slattery, Kyle Dempsey and Alex MacDonald, Had Gillingham been defending a two goal lead, then maybe Matty Willock and Robbie McKenzie could have come on to replace Olly Lee and Callum Slattery, with both debutants likely to be feeling the effects of there first competitive League One Fixture For The Gills.
And In The Ninetieth Minute Of The Match, Accrington Stanley should have equalised, Olly Lee passes the ball down the line towards Jordan Graham down the right side of the pitch in Accrington Stanley’s Half Of The Pitch, And Jordan Graham gets the ball under control before seeing his attempted back-heal run through to Cameron Burgess, And Cameron Burgess passes the ball square to Seamus Conneely, and Seamus Conneely manages to pick out Dion Charles with a cross-field pass down the right side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Final Third, And Dion Charles runs forwards in possession of the ball before running into a more central position on the pitch, And Dion Charles whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Colby Bishop gets the faintest of touches to header the ball goal-wards and Jack Bonham makes a fantastic point blank save and Jack Tucker passes the ball square to Tom O’Connor, And Tom O’Connor boots the ball long down-field towards John Akinde, and although Gillingham do not get the ball into Accrington Stanley’s Final Third, anywhere will do as far as Gillingham are concerned - THAT WAS A SENSATIONAL SAVE FROM JACK BONHAM TO PRESERVE GILLINGHAM’S ONE GOAL LEAD!!!!!!!!!
But there was a huge talking point in second half stoppage time with Accrington Stanley appealing for a penalty kick with the hosts pushing for that equaliser, Nathan Baxter kicks the ball long down-field for Accrington Stanley, And Cameron Burgess flicks the ball on towards Colby Bishop, who gets the ball under control, and Colby Bishop clips the ball across Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And I have got to say that I thought Tom O’Connor had bundled Mark Hughes down to the deck and I was just expecting Referee Darren Drysdale to point to the penalty spot, and when the penalty kick wasn’t awarded, I have to say that was a massive let off for The Gills, Because Accrington Stanley looked like they had a case for a penalty kick there.
Stuart O’Keefe then makes his first appearance for Gillingham since the penalty shoot-out win against Coventry City In The Second Round Of The League Cup back in August, And Stuart O’Keefe has come on in place of Jordan Graham, and the final noteworthy moment of the match see’s Accrington Stanley awarded a free kick with Connor Ogilvie penalised for hand-ball on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Accrington Stanley have the chance to equalise with what surely is the final goal-scoring opportunity of the match, and from the resulting free kick, Sean McConville has curled the ball over the wall, and over Gillingham’s Crossbar, and with Sean McConville’s free kick failing to hit the target, Gillingham manage to held on to three valuable points away against Accrington Stanley.
FULL TIME: ACCRINGTON STANLEY 0-1 GILLINGHAM
POST MATCH THOUGHTS
I uploaded the following status updates on to social media after the full time whistle,,,,, FULL TIME: ACCRINGTON STANLEY 0-1 GILLINGHAM - Kyle Dempsey's goal for Gillingham right on half time was the difference between both sides at full time as Gillingham pick up three valuable points against a very good Accrington Stanley Side. Accrington Stanley had there chances to score in the second half, Nottingham's Header crashed against the crossbar, Burgess failed to header the ball on target as Accrington looked threatening from corner kicks, Baxter saved Dempsey's effort on goal to deny Gills a second goal. Burgess curled his effort wide as Accrington were pushing for the equaliser, Jack Tucker did brilliantly to block Pritchard's low effort towards goal, and Nottingham failed to hit the target with his header on goal at the far post, and Jack Tucker clears the ball off the line. Jack Bonham also made a fantastic save to deny Bishop from heading in the equaliser for Accrington Stanley, and the hosts had a huge penalty appeal waved away in second half stoppage time. But this is a fantastic win for The Gills, and a clean sheet against a good side as well.
It was great to see Stuart O’Keefe make his first appearance for Gillingham since breaking his leg against Coventry City In The Second Round Of The League Cup, It may well only be a short cameo appearance from the substitutes bench in stoppage time, but even if Stuart O’Keefe can only make ten to fifteen minute substitute appearances for The Gills in the next few weeks, then having Stuart O’Keefe back on the pitch is going to be so important as he adds that experience and know how that Gillingham have perhaps lacked in midfield in quite a few matches this season, also, with five substitutes allowed in every league game, there is more flexibility to give Stuart O’Keefe those substitute appearances for The Gills.
The Midfield were excellent for Gillingham throughout the entire match, there is a clip on social media with Jordan Graham spinning past two Accrington Stanley Players in midfield, but it wasn’t that one piece of skill that summed up how well Jordan Graham played for Gillingham against Accrington Stanley, Kyle Dempsey scored the winning goal and was unlucky not to score a second goal for Gillingham in the second half, Alex MacDonald saw two efforts on goal saved by Nathan Baxter and he assisted Kyle Dempsey’s goal, And Olly Lee and Callum Slattery were both superb on there Gillingham Debut’s, Callum Slattery was breaking up play and doing the basics very well, as well as showing great intelligence to prevent Accrington Stanley from taking a quick free kick, And with Jacob Mellis and Stuart O’Keefe on the substitutes bench, along with Matty Willock and Robbie McKenzie, Gillingham’s midfield options probably look the strongest they have been all season.
That is harsh on Josh Eccles, Declan Drysdale and Scott Robertson, With all three loan signings going back to Coventry City and Celtic respectively, But Stuart O’Keefe and Olly Lee are more experienced players, And Callum Slattery has played in The Premier League for Southampton, So Callum Slattery perhaps is more developed compared to the three loanee’s, Declan Drysdale was more of a utility player at Gillingham, playing centre back and central midfield and he even played one game up-front for The Gills, I cannot see Callum Slattery playing as a striker, but he put in a superb display for Gillingham in midfield against Accrington Stanley.
And whilst I am praising the midfield for there performance against Accrington Stanley, the back five of Jack Bonham, Ryan Jackson, Jack Tucker, Connor Ogilvie and Tom O’Connor helped Gillingham to pick up all three points against Accrington Stanley, And a win, three points and a clean sheet against a very good Accrington Stanley Side was completely unexpected before kick off, But we are delighted with the performance and the result that Gillingham have picked up, especially as this result combined with results elsewhere has seen Gillingham increase the gap between themselves and The League One Relegation Zone to eight points - nine if you include goal difference - and avoiding relegation into League Two is all I am thinking about at this moment in time, obviously, the sooner this objective is achieved, then Gillingham can start to look up the table, but until our League One Status is assured for The 2021 / 2022 Season, I think it would be sensible to look over our shoulder at The Relegation Zone for the time being.
Everything we wanted to see from Gillingham against Accrington Stanley has been ticked, Gillingham have won the match and picked up all three points, Gillingham have kept a clean sheet against a decent Accrington Stanley Side, We saw a very encouraging performance with Jordan Graham, Olly Lee, Callum Slattery, Alex MacDonald and Kyle Dempsey adding some much needed quality and creativity to Gillingham’s Midfield, Gillingham have tested the opposition goalkeeper, and had it not been for Nathan Baxter then Alex MacDonald and Kyle Dempsey could have scored two goals each in a convincing 4-0 away win for The Gills, The players have responded after a dismal result against Burton Albion, And even Stuart O’Keefe coming on as a late substitute was a added bonus.
The challenge now for Gillingham is to take that performance against Accrington Stanley into the next two league matches against Crewe Alexandra and Rochdale, and six points from these two home games will see Gillingham move up The League One Table, hopefully, Gillingham can pick up three of those six points with a home win against Rochdale at the weekend - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!

John Saxon death: Nightmare on Elm Street and Enter the Dragon star dies aged 83
Tumblr media
Roisin O'Connor-July 26, 2020, 6:09 AM John Saxon, star of Enter the Dragon and three Nightmare on Elm Street films, has died aged 83. The Italian-American actor died from pneumonia in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, his wife Gloria told The Hollywood Reporter. Born Carmine Orrico in Brooklyn on 5 August 1936, Saxon became known for his portrayals of police officers and detectives. He won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a Mexican bandit opposite Marlon Brando in The Appaloosa (1966). He starred with Clint Eastwood in Joe Kidd (1972). In 1973, Saxon starred in Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee, in what would become the martial artist’s last film before his death, aged 32. While Saxon’s martial arts skills did not match those of Lee or their co-star, karate champion Jim Kelly, the actor told the Los Angeles Times in 2012 that Lee “took me seriously”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXuwJVErZSg “I would tell him I would rather do it this way, and he'd say, 'OK, try it that way,'” he said. In Nightmare on Elm Street, Saxon played police officer Donald Thompson in the first and third films of the franchise. He played a version of himself in New Nightmare, in 1994. Saxon was married three times. His first marriages were to screenwriter Mary Ann Murphy, and flight attendant turned actor Elizabeth Saxon. He married cosmetician Gloria Martel in 2008, and is also survived by his son, Antonio, and his sister Dolores. Read the full article

Victor McLaglen and Wallace Ford in The Informer (John Ford, 1935)
Cast: Victor McLaglen, Heather Angel, Preston Foster, Margot Grahame, Wallace Ford, Una O’Connor, J.M. Kerrigan, Joe Sawyer, Neil Fitzgerald, Donald Meek, May Boley. Screenplay: Dudley Nichols, based on a story by Liam O’Flaherty. Cinematography: Joseph H. August. Art direction: Van Nest Polglase. Film editing: George Hively.s Music: Max Steiner.
Time has not been kind to The Informer, though it was celebrated as a masterpiece at the time, and won four Academy Awards: John Ford for director, Victor McLaglen for best actor, Dudley Nichols for best screenplay, and Max Steiner for score.* Today, The Informer looks a little stiff and stagy and McLaglen's performance vastly overdone. The film invites comparison to much better manhunt films like Fritz Lang's M (1931) and especially Carol Reed's Odd Man Out (1947), which also takes the Irish revolution for its subject. Ford has a way of overstating things, such as the constant visions that Gypo Nolan (McLaglen) has of the "Wanted" poster that inspired him to inform against Frankie McPhillip (Wallace Ford). And the final scene in the church now feels impossibly mawkish: Frankie's mother (Una O'Connor), veiled and -- thanks to cinematographer Joseph H. August's lighting -- as beatific as a Raphael madonna, forgives Gypo, who then expires before a crucifix after proclaiming, "Frankie! Your mother forgives me!" It has to be said, though, that The Informer is full of great energy, and some of the supporting performances, like J.M. Kerrigan's Terry, who sponges off of the newly flush Gypo, or May Boley as the madam of a Production Coded brothel, are vivid and colorful. McLaglen's performance lacks the kind of nuance that would help us see Gypo as more than just a drunken loudmouth with no moral compass, which would make the ending feel less unearned, but you can't take your eyes off of him even when you wish you could. Legend has it that Ford kept McLaglen liquored up throughout the film to get the performance he wanted, but there are many long takes and ensemble scenes that suggest to me that McLaglen was more in control of himself than the legend suggests. *It also contributed to Oscar statistics: This was the first of Ford's record-setting Oscar wins as director. The others were for The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), and The Quiet Man (1952). (None of Ford's wins were for the genre with which is is most associated, the Western.) And Nichols became the first person to decline an Oscar: As a member of the Screen Writers Guild, Nichols was suspicious of the Academy because it had been founded in part as an attempt by the film industry to reduce the influence of unions. After the Academy began to disassociate itself from union-busting efforts, Nichols quietly accepted the award.

Bettye LaVette
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bettye LaVette (born Betty Jo Haskins, January 29, 1946) is an American soul singer-songwriter who made her first record at sixteen, but achieved only intermittent fame until 2005, with her album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise. Her eclectic musical style combines elements of soul, blues, rock and roll, funk, gospel, and country music.
Life and career
LaVette was born in Muskegon, Michigan, and raised in Detroit. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she did not begin singing in the church, but in her parents' living room, singing R&B and country and western music. She was signed by Johnnie Mae Matthews, a local record producer. In 1962, aged sixteen, she recorded a single, "My Man—He's a Lovin' Man", with Matthews, which became a Top Ten R&B hit after Atlantic Records bought distribution rights. This led to a tour with rhythm and blues musicians Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King, Barbara Lynn, and then-newcomer Otis Redding. She next hit the charts with “Let Me Down Easy” on Calla Records in 1965. This led to a brief stint with The James Brown Revue. After recording several 45–rpm singles for local Detroit labels, in 1969 LaVette signed to the Silver Fox label. She cut a handful of tracks, including two Top 40 R&B hits: “He Made A Woman Out Of Me” and “Do Your Duty”. The Memphis studio musicians on these recordings have since become known as The Dixie Flyers. In 1972, she signed once again with Atlantic/Atco. She was sent to Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama to record what was to be her first full-length album. Titled Child of the Seventies, it was produced by Brad Shapiro and featured the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, now known as The Swampers, but Atco chose not to issue the album.
The mid 1970s saw a brief stint and two 45s with Epic, and in 1978 she released the disco smash on West End Records "Doin’ The Best That I Can". In 1982, she was signed by her hometown label, Motown, and sent to Nashville to record. The resulting LP (her first album actually issued), titled Tell Me A Lie, was produced by Steve Buckingham. The first single, “Right In The Middle (Of Falling In Love)” hit the R&B Top 40. She briefly gave up recording for a six-year run in the Broadway smash Bubbling Brown Sugar, appearing alongside Honi Coles and Cab Calloway.
After LaVette had played her own personal mono recordings of Child of the Seventies for Gilles Petard, a French soul music collector, he sought the master recordings at Atlantic, whose personnel had previously thought they had been lost in a fire some years back. In 1999, he finally discovered the masters and then licensed the album from Atlantic and released it in 2000 as Souvenirs on his Art and Soul label. At the same time, Let Me Down Easy — Live In Concert was issued by the Dutch Munich label. Both albums sparked a renewed interest in LaVette and in 2003, A Woman Like Me (produced by Dennis Walker) was released. The CD won the 2004 W. C. Handy Award for "Comeback Blues Album of the Year". In an interview, LaVette identified A Woman Like Me as the first album in the second phase of her career and said her 2012 autobiography was named after the album.
After being signed to The Rosebud Agency for live bookings, Rosebud president Mike Kappus brought her to the attention of Anti- Records president, Andy Kaulkin. Upon seeing LaVette perform, Kaulkin signed her to a three-record deal. For the first project, he paired her with Joe Henry, and suggested an album of songs written entirely by women. The resulting CD, I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, was on many critics’ “Best of 2005” lists. The title is taken from the lyrics of Fiona Apple's 1996 hit "Sleep to Dream", which is covered on the album. (Other notable songwriters on the album were Aimee Mann, Sinéad O'Connor, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, and Dolly Parton.) The album was released by ANTI- Records and produced by Joe Henry.
In 2006, capitalizing on the success of I've Got My Own Hell To Raise and the reviews of her live shows, Child of the Seventies was reissued by Rhino Handmade with some previously unreleased tracks. The album was met with critical acclaim. Varèse Sarabande then issued Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart, a CD containing all of the songs that she cut for Silver Fox and SSS International in 1969 and 1970. The CD included three unreleased tracks as well as two duets with Hank Ballard.
In 2006, she received a “Pioneer Award” from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
Her 2007 album, The Scene of the Crime, was mostly recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with alt-rockers Drive-By Truckers. The Scene of the Crime was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Blues Album" and landed on numerous "Best of 2007" lists. LaVette talked about her experiences at Muscle Shoals Sound and FAME in an interview conducted by Edd Hurt in September 2007. Drive-By Truckers' frontman, Patterson Hood, produced the album together with LaVette. The album also features one song co-written by LaVette and Patterson Hood.
In 2008, she received a Blues Music Award for “Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer”. Also in 2008, Reel Music re-issued on CD her Motown LP, Tell Me A Lie. The album contained the original cover design that was not used when the LP was released.
In December 2008 at the Kennedy Center Honors, LaVette delivered a rendition of 1973's "Love, Reign o'er Me" in tribute to Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, who were among the year's honorees. The performance was widely considered one of the event's highlights.
On January 18, 2009, she performed a duet at the We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial on Sam Cooke's 1964 song "A Change Is Gonna Come" with Jon Bon Jovi. In April 2009, she shared the stage with Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at Radio City Music Hall for the David Lynch Foundation's "Change Begins Within" benefit concert promoting teaching Transcendental Meditation to children in inner city schools. In 2009 Sundazed released on CD the album Do Your Duty, which consisted of her eleven solo tracks cut for Silver Fox and SSS International. In June 2009 a six-song EP, Change Is Gonna Come Sessions, was released as a download only.
In 2010, LaVette released Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, which included unique arrangements and performances of classic songs by artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, and Pink Floyd. Included is the complete, un-edited version of her Kennedy Center Honors performance of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me." The CD was critically acclaimed and nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. She has appeared on National Public Radio's Mountain Stage, World Cafe, All Things Considered and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!. She has appeared in a Mississippi Public Broadcasting series, Blues Divas, and is in a film of the same name, both produced by Robert Mugge. She has also appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, Conan, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Austin City Limits, The Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Artist's Den. LaVette also joined the 9th, 10th and 11th annual Independent Music Awards judging panel to assist independent musicians' careers.
LaVette contributed a cover of "Most of the Time" for the album Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International. On December 31, 2012, LaVette appeared in the UK on BBC Two's Jools Holland Annual Hootenanny. In 2013 and 2014, LaVette was nominated for a Blues Music Award in the 'Contemporary Blues Female Artist' category.
Worthy was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016 for Best Blues Album.
In 2016, LaVette won a Blues Music Award as the 'Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year'.
Personal life
LaVette is married to Kevin Kiley, a recorded music and antiques dealer who is also a singer and musician. They live in West Orange, New Jersey.

FOM BLOG: CREWE ALEXANDRA 0-1 GILLINGHAM
My Thoughts On Crewe Alexandra V Gillingham...................
This was a unconvincing win for Gillingham, A win that plenty Gillingham Supporters would call a smash and grab 1-0 win, But after losing five league matches in a row and Gillingham haven't scored in those five league defeats against MK Dons, Portsmouth, Fleetwood Town, Ipswich Town and Sunderland, then it doesn't matter how Gillingham won against Crewe Alexandra, Because these three points are three vital points, Because this result stops the winless and goal-less run that Gillingham were on and maybe Gillingham can gain some confidence and gain some momentum from this win against Crewe Alexandra, And Gillingham can take the confidence from this win into the two cup matches against Woking and Arsenal's U23's over the coming week.
As for how Gillingham Lined Up Against Crewe Alexandra, Gillingham Lined Up As Follows........ Joe Lumley, Ryan Jackson, Jack Tucker, Connor Ogilvie, Zech Medley, Robbie McKenzie, Tom O'Connor, Kyle Dempsey, Jordan Graham, Vadaine Oliver, Trae Coyle Subs: Joe Walsh (GK), Christian Maghoma, Declan Drysdale, Henry Woods, Matty Willock, John Akinde, Dominic Samuel - I was pleased to see Trae Coyle start for Gillingham, because I think Trae Coyle can provide Gillingham with some pace and trickery in the opposition's final third, Tom O'Connor starting for Gillingham was a unexpected surprise as well, Mikael Mandron also starts up-front for Crewe Alexandra and many supporters believed that The Former Gillingham Striker will get himself on the score-sheet, simply because Gillingham are on a horrific run of form at this moment in time.
FIRST HALF:
Eighteen Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra should have taken the lead, Jack Tucker kicks a long diagonal cross-field cross pass towards one of Vadaine Oliver or Tom O’Connor, But Perry Ng manages to win the initial aerial challenge and Daniel Powell manages to get on to the loose ball and pass the ball back towards Perry Ng, And Perry Ng kicks the ball long down-field towards Mikael Mandron on the halfway line, And Mikael Mandron manages to retain possession of the ball before threading a fantastic pass through to Tom Lowery on the over-lap down the right side of the pitch - Gillingham’s Left - And Tom Lowery has aches of space to run into, And Tom Lowery whips in a fantastic low cross across towards Charlie Kirk, who is unmarked inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Charlie Kirk’s first time shot towards goal goes wide of the far right post when really Charlie Kirk should have hit the target - And that was a massive let off for The Gills.
Thirty One Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra created a golden goal-scoring opportunity to try and take the lead, Daniel Powell has possession of the ball for Crewe Alexandra down the right side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Half, And Daniel Powell passes the ball back to Perry Ng, And Perry Ng takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball forwards to Mikael Mandron, who not only manages to retain possession of the ball, But Mikael Mandron manages to thread through a fantastic through-ball through to Daniel Powell, And Daniel Powell is running through on goal for the home side, And Daniel Powell see’s his low effort towards goal crash against the out-side of the near post and the ball diverts out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick - Crewe Alexandra really should have scored again, and once again, Mikael Mandron is involved in the build up.
Thirty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra again create another decent goal-scoring opportunity, Gillingham are on the offensive and looking to make the breakthrough as Gillingham are causing Crewe Alexandra problems down our right side of the pitch, as Jordan Graham passes the ball through to Ryan Jackson on the over-lap in Crewe Alexandra’s Final Third, And Ryan Jackson’s cross ricochets off Luke Offord and the ball runs through to Callum Ainley, And Callum Ainley runs forwards towards the halfway line in possession of the ball before passing the ball short to Daniel Powell, And Daniel Powell takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball square to Ryan Wintle, And Ryan Wintle passes the ball forwards to Tom Lowery, Who plays a first time layoff into Harry Pickering’s Path, And Harry Pickering manages to a thread a through-pass through to Charlie Kirk, And again, Charlie Kirk has a lot of space to run into and Charlie Kirk is through on goal for Crewe Alexandra, And Charlie Kirk see’s his shot towards goal saved by Joe Lumley, and Gillingham can consider themselves fortunate that the ball runs through to Robbie McKenzie and Crewe Alexandra are not given the opportunity to stick the ball into the back of the net from the re-bound.
Thirty Five Minutes Into The Match, And despite Crewe Alexandra creating plenty of goal-scoring opportunities in this match so far, Gillingham had the chance to take the lead, Connor Ogilvie manages to intercept the ball from Mikael Mandron on the halfway line and pass the ball out-wide to Tom O’Connor, And Tom O’Connor takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball back to Zech Medley just inside Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch, And Zech Medley takes a touch to control the ball before playing a one / two with Robbie McKenzie, and Zech Medley kicks the ball long down-field and Vadaine Oliver manages to chest the ball under control before smashing his effort towards goal first time with a dipping volley which goes wide of the far right post with Will Jaaskelainen well and truly beaten in The Crewe Alexandra Goal - Vadaine Oliver perhaps could have gone closer to goal rather then opting to shoot first time, because Luke Offord slipped at the crucial moment for Crewe Alexandra.
Thirty Seven Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra create another decent goal-scoring opportunity, Mikael Mandron plays a short pass to Daniel Powell, who passes the ball square to Callum Ainley, And Callum Ainley gets the ball under control before passing the ball out-wide to Charlie Kirk down the left side of the pitch in Gillingham’s Final Third - Gillingham’s Right - And Charlie Kirk cuts inside into a more central position on the pitch before picking out Perry Ng with a cross-field pass, And Perry Ng takes a touch to control the ball before clipping in a dangerous cross which see’s Daniel Powell completely unmarked inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Daniel Powell’s looping header thankfully goes over the crossbar - It is only going to be a matter of time before Crewe Alexandra open the scoring, Because Crewe Alexandra have created plenty of clear cut goal-scoring opportunities to take the lead.
Forty Minutes Into The Match, And Tom O’Connor’s last ditch challenge on Charlie Kirk diverts the ball out of play for A Crewe Alexandra Corner Kick, and from the resulting corner kick, Crewe Alexandra should have scored, Callum Ainley passes the ball short to Charlie Kirk, And Callum Ainley makes a quick run which allows Charlie Kirk to run through by the byline and take on Trae Coyle, And Charlie Kirk fires in a low dangerous cross across the face of goal, and Mikael Mandron’s diving header is kept out by a combination of a very good save by Joe Lumley and the ball hitting both Jack Tucker and Perry Ng and Jack Tucker manages to get the ball partially clear and away from goal, and Vadaine Oliver headers the ball towards the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Harry Pickering headers the ball back inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Jack Tucker headers the ball partially clear towards Charlie Kirk, and Charlie Kirk’s fiercely driven shot towards goal hits Tom O’Connor hard and the ball deflects out of play for A Crewe Alexandra Corner Kick.
And In The Forty Fifth Minute Of The Match, Crewe Alexandra were on the front-foot and looking to open the scoring again, Luke Offord has possession of the ball for Crewe Alexandra on the halfway line, And Luke Offord passes the ball out-wide to Ryan Wintle, And Ryan Wintle runs forward in possession of the ball down the left side of the pitch, And Ryan Wintle continue’s his run forwards before passing the ball short to Harry Pickering, And Harry Pickering gets the ball under control before cutting inside into a more central position on the pitch, And Harry Pickering passes the ball forwards towards Mikael Mandron on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Mikael Mandron plays a one touch layoff into the path of Callum Ainley, And a neat pice of skill see’s Callum Ainley go past Jack Tucker, And Callum Ainley’s shot towards goal is tipped over the crossbar by Joe Lumley who gets the faintest of touches on to the ball to prevent Crewe Alexandra from taking the lead.
HALF TIME: CREWE ALEXANDRA 0-0 GILLINGHAM
I uploaded the follow status update on to Facebook And Twitter At Half Time,,,, HALF TIME: CREWE 0-0 GILLINGHAM - Gillingham are fortunate that the score-line is still 0-0 at half time, Charlie Kirk shoots wide from Tom Lowery's low cross, Daniel Powell has seen his shot hit the post from Mandron's through-ball, Kirk has also seen his shot towards goal saved, Powell has seen his header go over the crossbar from Ng's floated cross, And Lumley has also tipped Callum Ainley's shot over the crossbar and played a pivotal roll in ensuring that Crewe did not score after a goal-mouth scramble. Gills have created chances, Jasskelainen has saved Ogilvie's Header, Oliver should really hit the target with his effort on goal, Oliver's Header is on target from O'Connor's Cross but was comfortable for Jasskelainen to deal with, I have got to say that Crewe are the better side.
Jordan Graham’s in-swinging corner kick has clipped the top of the crossbar and gone out of play for a goal-kick, Jordan Graham has also whipped in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the back-stick and Connor Ogilvie’s header towards goal is saved by Will Jasskelainen, Perry Ng has seen his shot from distance comfortably clear Gillingham’s Crossbar, And I thought there was a potential penalty decision for Gillingham when Tom O’Connor was fouled inside Crewe Alexandra’s Penalty Area, But A Corner Kick Was Awarded To Gillingham Instead.
I had to watch the vast majority of the first half on I Follow on mute, because the commentary was ahead of the play and that was a bit off-putting, and whilst that has happened in other matches this season, it hasn’t been ahead of the play for the entire first half, I was hoping that the commentary links up with the passage of play much better in the second half, And as far as any substitutions go, I was not expecting a half time substitution from Gillingham, And I think Steve Evans will send the same eleven out on to the pitch demanding for a much better performance in the second half.
SECOND HALF:
Fifty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra should have taken the lead, Vadaine Oliver cannot retain possession of the ball and Omar Beckles passes the ball back to Luke Offord, And Luke Offord passes the ball forwards to Ryan Wintle, And Ryan Wintle takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball square to Harry Pickering, And Harry Pickering passes the ball out-wide to Charlie Kirk, who plays a first time pass forwards towards Callum Ainley, And Callum Ainley manages to retain possession of the ball before passing the ball back to Ryan Wintle, And Ryan Wintle passes the ball out-wide to Harry Pickering first time, And Harry Pickering takes a touch to control the ball before whipping in a low dangerous cross inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Mikael Mandron’s first time shot towards goal hits the inside of the post and the ball ricochets very kindly into Joe Lumley’s grateful arms and Gillingham survive - BUT CREWE ALEXANDRA REALLY SHOULD HAVE OPENED THE SCORING WITH THAT GOAL-SCORING OPPORTUNITY!!!!!!! - And as soon as the ball goes out of play, Gillingham make there first substitution of the match with John Akinde coming on to replace Trae Coyle, And John Akinde and Vadaine Oliver up-front suggests straight-away that Gillingham want to get the ball forwards quickly and hoping that the physical presence of Oliver and Akinde in attack can cause Crewe Alexandra problems defensively.
Fifty Six Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham create a rare goal-scoring opportunity, Ryan Jackson goes on a driving run down the right side of the pitch in possession of the ball, And Ryan Jackson manages to retain possession of the ball, cuts back and pass the ball short to Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey gets the ball under control before creating some space for himself to get a shot off on goal which is saved by Will Jasskelainen - And this effort on goal gives Gillingham something to build on.
And something to build on is precisely what happened, Because Gillingham manage to open the scoring after Fifty Eight Minutes, Omar Beckles kicks the ball long down-field for Crewe Alexandra and Robbie McKenzie headers the ball forwards for Gillingham back into Crewe Alexandra’s half of the pitch and Ryan Wintle wins the aerial challenge up against Vadaine Oliver and Callum Ainley and Kyle Dempsey both compete for loose ball in central midfield, and Kyle Dempsey passes the ball back to Jack Tucker, who takes one touch to control the ball and another touch to pick out Jordan Graham with a diagonal cross-field cross pass, and Jordan Graham does brilliantly to get the ball under control down the left side of the pitch in Crewe Alexandra’s Final Third, And Jordan Graham takes on Perry Ng and runs towards the byline before whipping in a sensational in-swinging cross towards the far side of Crewe Alexandra’s Penalty Area and John Akinde’s Header is on target and Will Jasskelainen cannot prevent the ball from crossing the goal-line, and finally, Gillingham have scored a goal and Gillingham have taken the lead - CREWE ALEXANDRA 0-1 GILLINGHAM.
Now Will Jasskelainen should have done better to prevent John Akinde from scoring, But having gone five and a half games without scoring a goal, I don’t think anyone cares how Gillingham scored just as long as we stuck the ball into the back of the net, and that is precisely what Gillingham have done, also, It’s great to see John Akinde score his first goal of the season and finally get his name on the score-sheet having not scored for Gillingham since that 3-2 away win against Blackpool back in The 2019 / 2020 Season.
Gillingham have switched our formation to A 4-4-2 Diamond Midfield, the back five is still the same (Joe Lumley, Ryan Jackson, Jack Tucker, Connor Ogilvie, Zech Medley) But Robbie McKenzie is sitting in-front of the back four, Kyle Dempsey and Tom O’Connor are playing in central midfield, With Jordan Graham given a free role behind Vadaine Oliver and John Akinde.
Sixty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra create a very good goal-scoring opportunity to equalise just five minutes after going behind to John Akinde’s goal, Ryan Wintle runs forwards in possession of the ball up towards the halfway line, And Ryan Wintle retains possession of the ball for Crewe Alexandra and passes the ball back towards Perry Ng, who plays a first time pass inside centrally towards Callum Ainley, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before switching play to Charlie Kirk down the left side of the pitch, And Charlie Kirk goes on a driving run forwards in possession of the ball all the way down the left side of the pitch, And Charlie Kirk back-heals the ball towards Harry Pickering just outside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Harry Pickering evades the attempted challenge from Ryan Jackson and Harry Pickering manages to work his way in possession of the ball inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area and lay the ball off to Callum Ainley, And Callum Ainley’s first time shot towards goal flashes just wide of the far right post with Joe Lumley well and truly beaten - Crewe Alexandra are dominating possession of the ball, which is to be expected, but they have yet to get themselves on the score-sheet - But if Crewe Alexandra continue to create quality goal-scoring opportunities then it feels like it is only a matter of time before they do score the equaliser.
Sixty Six Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had a fantastic opportunity to extend there lead to 2-0 and give The Gills some much needed breathing space, Gillingham have a throw on in there own defensive final third down the right side of the pitch, And Ryan Jackson hurls a long throw down the line and Vadaine Oliver flicks the ball on towards Jordan Graham, who skilfully manages to take the ball past Luke Offord and run down the right flank in possession of the ball and Jordan Graham continue’s his run down the right side of the pitch, And Jordan Graham manages to retain possession of the ball despite being closely marked by Ryan Wintle, And Jordan Graham cuts back on himself and then works his way towards the byline, and Jordan Graham whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post, And Tom O’Connor’s looping header hits the roof of the net rather then the back of the net - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM TO DOUBLE THERE LEAD TO 2-0!!!!!!!!!!!
Sixty Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra make there first substitution of the game as Owen Dale comes on for Daniel Powell, And In The Seventy First Minute Of The Match, Gillingham make there second substitution of the game as Dominic Samuel comes on to replace Vadaine Oliver, And Crewe Alexandra make there second substitution of the game as Oliver Finney comes on to replace Callum Ainley, And In The Seventy Eighth Minute Of The Match, Crewe Alexandra create a very good goal-scoring opportunity to try and score the equaliser, Luke Pickering manages to whip in a low cross across the face of goal and the ball deflects back to Ryan Wintle, who fails to hit the target with a first time fiercely driven effort towards goal, and this goal-scoring opportunity came after a dominating passage of possession for Crewe Alexandra.
Eighty Three Minutes Into The Match, And John Akinde is penalised for his challenge on Tom Lowery, And the resulting free kick is taken very quickly with Perry Ng passing the ball square to Luke Offord, who passes the ball forwards to Harry Pickering, And Harry Pickering takes a touch to control the ball before passing the forwards out-wide to Charlie Kirk, And Charlie Kirk takes a touch to control the ball before waiting around for passing options and passing the ball centrally to Tom Lowery, who takes a touch to control the ball, And Tom Lowery passes the ball forwards towards Perry Ng right on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area in a right / central area of the pitch, And Perry Ng gets the ball under control before threading the ball through to Owen Dale on the over-lap, And Owen Dale fires a first time cross across the face of goal and Oliver Finney’s shot towards goal is brilliantly saved by Joe Lumley and Jack Tucker gets the faintest of touches on to the second ball to prevent Oliver Finney from scoring the re-bound and Robbie McKenzie manages to get the ball clear and out-side of Gillingham’s Penalty Area - Now if Oliver Finney hit his shot towards goal either side of Joe Lumley, then Crewe Alexandra equalise, But that is still a remarkable save from Joe Lumley to preserve Gillingham’s slender 1-0 lead.
Eighty Eight Minutes Into The Match, And Crewe Alexandra make there third and final substitution as Offrande Zanzala comes on to replace Tom Lowery, But there is still some defending for Gillingham to do from the resulting corner kick, And Joe Lumley saves a second cross from A Crewe Alexandra Player, Then Joe Lumley strikes the ball on the half-volley towards Jordan Graham with a exceptional pass down the line, Joe Lumley has been exceptional between the sticks for Gillingham against Crewe Alexandra in a match where Gillingham have needed a inspired goalkeeping performance.
Eighty Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Matty Willock comes on to replace Tom O’Connor as Gillingham look to see out the rest of this match, But just as we are reaching The Ninetieth Minus Of The Match, Oliver Finney has seen his shot towards goal flashed just wide of the far post, And Mikael Mandron was involved in the build up to this goal-scoring opportunity, and can Gillingham hang on for three valuable points ???
Four minutes of additional time were shown by The Fourth Official, But with Matty Willock’s substitution, Oliver Finney’s shot going wide and Joe Lumley taking his time over the resulting goal-kick, more time has been added on, And the final noteworthy moment of the match see’s Perry Ng’s long kick down-field headed down the line by Kyle Dempsey and John Akinde is chasing a loose ball and Perry Ng has to pass the ball back to Will Jasskelainen, And Will Jasskelainen doesn’t have any time left to kick the ball long down-field, and after a horrendous run of five league defeats in a row, and five matches where Gillingham have failed to score, finally, Gillingham end this dreadful run with a win, a clean sheet, and most importantly, three points in a match where Gillingham had to win.
FULL TIME: CREWE ALEXANDRA 0-1 GILLINGHAM
I uploaded the following comments on to Facebook and Twitter after the full time whistle,,,,,, FULL TIME: CREWE 0-1 GILLINGHAM - This was a backs against the wall display from Gillingham in a match where Gills were second best and Crewe will be wondering how or why they didn't get a point out of this match at the very least. Gills will gladly take the three points tonight, Great to see Akinde get his first goal of the season for Gillingham, hopefully, this goal can be the springboard for Akinde to get on the score-sheet on a more regular basis, the back four of Jackson, Tucker, Ogilvie and Medley were all superb, But Lumley was out-standing in goal, Switching the formation to a diamond and two strikers playing more centrally gave Gills more of a threat in the final third, O'Connor was unlucky not to header the ball into the back of the net for 2-0, How Mandron didn't score when his effort on goal hit the post, I have no idea, After the last five defeats where Gillingham have failed to stick the ball into the back of the net, It makes for a pleasant change to be celebrating a hard fought 1-0 win for Gillingham Tonight, Not the best performance, and a lot to work on, But three vital points for The Gills.
Make no mistake, this wasn’t a fantastic performance from Gillingham and had it not been for the exceptional performance from Joe Lumley in-between the sticks for Gillingham then Crewe Alexandra could have quite easily won this match 4-1 or 5-1, But what we can do as Gillingham Supporters is enjoy that winning feeling having seen Gillingham lose the last five league games against MK Dons, Portsmouth, Fleetwood Town, Ipswich Town and Sunderland, I think it is important to celebrate The 1-0 win against Crewe Alexandra, Because A 1-0 Away Win, A Clean Sheet and three points are positive talking points, even though it is also important to recognise that Gillingham were very fortunate to win 1-0 against Crewe Alexandra.
I think switching the formation to A 4-4-2 Diamond Midfield with John Akinde and Vadaine Oliver in attack worked very effectively for Gillingham, And I just wonder if Gillingham should go back to the diamond midfield which worked so successfully for The Gills Last Season ??? - especially when taking into consideration that Gillingham do not have many pacey wide players and the lack of a defensive midfielder in-front of the back four leaves Gillingham very exposed, whilst it is important to mention that Crewe Alexandra created goal-scoring opportunities after Gillingham switched formations, Gillingham were not conceding the goal-scoring opportunities we saw from Crewe Alexandra in the first half.
John Akinde scoring his first goal for Gillingham in The 2020 / 2021 Season is a huge positive, and I am hoping that goal from John Akinde is the springboard for John Akinde to score more goals for The Gills, And Gillingham can now switch there attentions to two cup matches against Woking and Arsenal’s U21’s In The FA Cup and Football League Trophy respectively, obviously The FA Cup Game is more important, But it would be great to see Gillingham win both matches against Woking and Arsenal’s U21’s, which will not only see Gillingham progress further in both cup competitions, But Gillingham can take some confidence and momentum into the league fixtures against Lincoln City, Charlton Athletic and AFC Wimbledon, which are the three league games that Gillingham have got coming up for the rest of November.
As for other player performances, Jack Tucker and Connor Ogilvie were exceptional as Gillingham’s Centre Back Pairing, Jordan Graham whipped in two quality crosses, one which John Akinde scored, and the second cross that Tom O’Connor headed over the crossbar, But The Man Of The Match Award goes to Joe Lumley, who fully earned that clean sheet for Gillingham, And Joe Lumley returns to QPR having done a exceptional job filling in for Jack Bonham, who should be back available for selection for Gillingham V Woking at the weekend.
Again, this is a unconvincing win, it is a fortuitous win for The Gills, But a win, a clean sheet and three points is something for Gillingham to build on, and sometimes you need that one lucky result to go in your favour to go on a excellent run, and let’s hope that Gillingham can build on this win against Crewe Alexandra with a win against Woking in The First Round Of The FA Cup At The Weekend - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Northampton 24-26 Bristol: Ian Madigan lands dramatic conversion when Saints end with 11 men after four players have been thrown out late

Bristol won a dramatic and controversial Gallagher Premiership clash in Northampton, which saw the home team finish the game with only 11 men on the field.
A spinning game saw tries out wings Taqele Naiyaravoro and Ahess Tuala plus full-back George Furbank and scrum-half Cobus Reinach, along with two Piers Francis conversions against attempts for closing Joe Batley, number eight Jordan Crane and Harry substitution Randell, plus two Luke Daniels conversions
Then, in the added time, Piers O'Connor went for Bristol bonus point try, with replacement Ian Madigan landing a conversion to win it 26-24, inspiring Angry from the house loyal.
Daniels came closer when he drove off the 10 meter long line of the Saints to be held shortly before a scrum, middle Siale Piutau came in a meter before Crane just managed to score. Daniels' conversion brought Bristol forward by 12-0.
Bristol's signatures with large amounts Charles Piuatau went
Naiyaravoro was a big part of that, because he was a huge thorn in Bristol's side all day long, always looking to use his strength and tempo on the left and in the middle.
But he would not be denied after the pressure of Northampton in the 22, placed Grayson Naiyaravoro just to get into it
Two touchdowns in a few minutes of Tuala, a run. -in 15 meters after the long Grayson pass, and then a bit of magic from Furbank to cut the Bristol defense, Northampton pushed 17-12 in front.
Bristol, which was the second best ever since then, they went on, found a spark when Connor rushed through a hole in the middle of the holy field and walked away his own 10-meter line before it. sending Randall from 22 meters
Daniels repented, but the lead of 19-17 lasted three minutes when Uren committed a horrible mistake when throwing an intercept pass from a line-out on Bristol 22 directly into the hands of Reinach.
And the visitors hit back.
And the visitors hit back. as they looked to win the game in the last minutes.
Amazing, Saints ended the game with 11 men as Reinach, substitutes Jamie Gibson and Alex Waller plus captain Tom Wood were in the final minutes as Bristol broke down as Bristol piled up by the pressure
Bristol came on equal height when O & # 39; Connor walked about 10 meters before the fourth attempt from his side before Madigan won the conversion for the west side of the country
