Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Tumblr media
Raj and Simran meet during a trip across Europe and end up getting stranded in the middle of nowhere after they miss their train. Despite their initial clashing, they fall in love. However, Simran’s traditional father has arranged her marriage elsewhere. Raj must win over Simran’s family to marry her, leading to a series of heartfelt moments, comedic misunderstandings, and ultimately, a dramatic climax where love conquers all as the couple fights for their happiness against societal norms.
Dick is so raj coded with his quips and charisma. Their chaotic banter and chemistry is off the charts. Any Indian who hasn’t watched this gets their desi card revoked immediately, I don’t make the rules. This movies fits Dick’s dramatic flair perfectly.

Despite the enmity between their families, Ram and Leela fall deeply in love, leading to a tragic and tumultuous journey filled with passion, violence, and sacrifice.
It fits Jason’s love for guns and classics. An absolute visual treat with cinematography and all the songs are absolute bangers.

In the end, they reunite, realizing they are meant to be together.
Grumpy x sunshine. The OG green flag. Epitome of ‘if he wanted to,he would’. Makes my chatterbox heart happy because of how much I relate to the FL. Favourite comfort movie of all time. ML kinda looks like Cillian Murphy’s scarecrow. “I like you a lot but that is my problem, you don’t need to worry about it.” Their fights and his little sassy comebacks and rants were so cute and fun to watch.

Jodhaa Akbar (2003)
Tumblr media
The Mughal emperor Akbar, seeking to forge political alliances, marries Jodhaa, a Rajput princess. Initially a marriage of convenience, their relationship evolves as they learn to respect and love each other. Jodhaa struggles to adapt to Mughal customs, especially with their cultural and religious differences but her courage and integrity win Akbar's admiration. Despite conspiracies and opposition, including from Akbar's own court, their love prevails. The film explores the transformation of a young ruler, initially groomed for ruthlessness by his mentor Bairam Khan, into a wise and compassionate emperor who values mercy, diplomacy, religious harmony and cultural acceptance. Akbar's realization of the importance of religious tolerance, showcased through his abolition of discriminatory policies and his respect for all faiths.
The arranged marriage tag and the ‘raised as a weapon but softens and shows more compassion out of respect and love for his empress’ tag fits demonhead!Damian so much. The way he said mashallah after he pulled off her veil in the middle of a sword fight >>>>. I love how it captures the essence of India’s rich heritage and diversity. “Why seek paradise ? It is before me now.”

Khoobsurat (2014)
Tumblr media
Milli, a free-spirited and eccentric young woman becomes the physiotherapist for a royal family. She brings her lively yet clumsy personality into the conservative royal household, shaking up their structured lives. It clashes with the formal atmosphere of the palace, especially with the stern matriarch, Nirmala Devi. Despite initial resistance, Milli's unconventional methods bring joy and laughter into the lives of the family members, including the brooding prince, Vikram. As Milli navigates the challenges of fitting into the royal household, she also finds herself falling in love with Vikram, leading to a series of comedic and heartwarming moments.
Very cliched (well it is a Disney film) and the second hand embarrassment is unreal but sometimes after a long day all you need is a feel-good cheesy rom-com. Oh to sit next to Fawad Khan in a red convertible while gazing lovingly at him. I like how she emphasises on improving the patient’s mental health to help him heal. Incase you haven’t noticed already, cold brooding™️ x silly goose is my favourite character dynamic.
Tumblr media
𝐀/𝐍 - I’ll be honest with y’all, this was to satiate my desire of writing x desi! reader cuz I don’t have enough motivation or time to do it T^T

Xiyao Hindi mix annotations
Explanations for all the songs on the Xiyao portion of the massive Hindi fanmix, including links to full translations as well as videos of the songs themselves!
These six songs were chosen with more deliberation than the others on the playlist, so I uh, may have gotten a little carried away in providing film context. Enjoy! Sorry in advance for ruining your day!
--
1.) “Dil Se Re” (from Dil Se)
If there's a heart, there will be pain If there's pain, there will be a heart The seasons keep on passing by From the heart, from the heart The heart is after all a heart It's a sweet problem My beloved
As I mentioned on the notes for the Nieyao part of the mix, Dil Se is a beautiful, complicated movie whose songs function as windows into how one character perceives another--and that perception never, ever matches reality. “Dil Se Re” and “Satrangi Re” both reflect how Amar (who sees himself as a romantic hero) sees Meghna (who is an enigma to both Amar and the viewer for the first half of the film). While “Satrangi Re” casts Meghna as a seductress, “Dil Se Re” casts her as a pastel-clad ingenue ready to run into Amar’s arms. The real Meghna is neither of these things; we eventually learn that Meghna has been radicalized by her past trauma and brought into a terrorist organization, and is using Amar’s obsession with her to orchestrate an attack.
If you just listen to “Dil Se Re,” it sounds very sweet! The visuals, however, are all about destruction; Amar and (his idealized innocent version of) Meghna gaze at each other through barbed wire and embrace as shells explode around them. In the moment I chose for the artwork, they lie together in a grave as falling leaves bury them--foreshadowing their eventual deaths together. While LXC and JGY’s relationship is certainly more mutual than Amar and Meghna’s (if you were feeling bad for Amar, don’t--he constantly violates Meghna’s boundaries in every sense), both feature a man who has no idea what’s going on in his beloved’s head, and both end in destruction.
2.) “Mehndi Laga Ki Rakhna” (from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge)
Keep looking for me on the road Keep your doors open To take you away, fair one Your beloved is coming Now don't say anything else Now don't do anything else Keep the matters of the heart Enclosed in your heart
Now for something more cheerful: the hideout song! This is the song that started this whole project, because this stanza in particular reads like Meng Yao reassuring Lan Xichen while he’s on the run.
DDLJ is one of those movies that EVERYONE has seen. Simran and Raj fall in love during a trip to Switzerland... but Simran’s extra-conservative father has already arranged a marriage for her, and disapproves of Raj as a concept so hard that he relocates their family from the UK back to India. Raj follows Simran to India, resolved to win her father’s approval so they can be together with her family’s blessing. During this song, Simran and Raj covertly flirt with and reassure each other even as they keep their distance to avoid detection by Simran’s father. For the art, I wanted to maintain the look of the veil that Simran wears, which is why LXC looks like he’s fresh out of Rivendell.
3.) “In Lamhon Ki Daaman Mein” (from Jodhaa Akbar)
What has time done? It has completely changed everything I've attained you You've attained me We have met in such a way Just like two tunes are playing softly No one is high or low In these tunes
Jodhaa-Akbar is a historical epic about the Mughal emperor Akbar the Great and his Rajput wife Jodhaa going from political marriage to friends to lovers in an excruciating slow burn. While Wangxian got the cute pining song, Xiyao get the song where Jodhaa and Akbar finally consummate their marriage after several months of in-universe time and three hours of movie runtime. I think of this scene every time the debate about Sex In Movies(TM) flares up, because while both characters are fully clothed and there’s no groping or even kissing on the lips, it is emotion-centered, sensual, and thus fully unambiguous about what is happening.
Though this song is sweetly romantic in lyrics, context, and usually in sound, the bridge is in this intense minor key that, as @rated-r-for-fear put it, “sounds like a THREAT.” GENTLE YET OMINOUS: THE ENTIRE XIYAO VIBE.
4.) “Mere Haath Mein” (from Fanaa)
When I have your hands in mine I have all of paradise with me This world is nothing when you're close I want to get destroyed in your love
If I had a nickel for every song on this mix from a movie where secondary lead is secretly a terrorist, I’d have two nickels, but it’s weird that it happened twice!
In Fanaa (which translates to DESTRUCTION, in case you had any doubts about where this was going), a Kashmiri woman named Zooni travels to Delhi and has a whirlwind romance with rakish tour guide Rehan, until he dies tragically in a terrorist attack... except not really, because Rehan is HIMSELF the terrorist and faked his death. Years later, he becomes wounded during a mission and collapses at Zooni’s house in the mountains. Some sickfic and h/c tropes ensue, and Zooni and Rehan rekindle their old romance. Unfortunately, Rehan is in fact still a terrorist who shows himself capable of murdering Zooni’s loved ones, which, you know, puts a damper on things. Zooni is forced to kill Rehan and cradles him in her arms as he dies.
This song is half stylized and imaginary, half montage of what the leads are actually up to. The stylized half has some lovely dreamy visuals... but in the IRL half, we see that Rehan lives in fear of Zooni inevitably finding out about his past (and present), and by turns bursts into tears or disengages from her. In the moment I borrowed to draw, Rehan pulls Zooni’s hand away as she reaches for his face--gently, but still, the distance is there. The tragedy of Xiyao for me lies not in its ending, but in how it must have deteriorated during those 16 years as JGY goes on his whole Macbeth trajectory and LXC either doesn’t notice or won’t notice.
5.) “Maar Dala” (from Devdas)
I hid every sorrow I faced all the problems smilingly I even hugged the thorns And was hurt by the flowers My happiness has killed me
There’s a Devdas song on the Wangxian mix (from Paro’s POV) and one from Dev.D on the Nieyao one (from Dev’s POV), so now it’s Chandramukhi’s turn! After torpedoing his relationship with his childhood sweetheart Paro, rich fuckboy Devdas takes up drinking and visits a brothel, where he meets a courtesan named Chandramukhi. While Chandramukhi inexplicably falls for Devdas, she’s also Done with his one-man pity party and calls him out on it. This song is partly Chandramukhi trolling, partly a callback to Paro’s earlier mistreatment, and partly foreshadowing for Devdas’s eventual death.
(Chandramukhi in the 2002 film also gets a great scene where she stands up to an aristocrat who insults her caste and profession by straight-up SLAPPING the guy in front of his whole upper-caste family. Meng Shi would approve.)
Though this is one of Chandramukhi’s earlier scenes, something about the tone sounds like a regretful swan song, and I chose it for its sound and lyrics rather than its context. “My happiness has killed me,” indeed. :(
6.) “Mere Dholna Sun” (from Bhool Bhulaiyya)
Listen, dear one To the beat of my love My love for you Will stay through the monsoons It will survive and live It will remain till the end
This translation was taken from a YouTube lyrics video because none of my usual lyrics sites had an English translation!  Which is a shame, because this banger of a song is far and away the best part of this film. A woman who believes herself possessed by the ghost of a Bengali court dancer relives the moment of her husband’s death through one hell of a kathak routine. Please watch the video, because Vidya Balan’s intensity is CAPTIVATING.
And as you watch, consider LXC in seclusion, unhinged and vividly hallucinating in his grief. If I have to think about this, then so do you. :D

17, 28, 36 for the yet another writers' ask please :D
17. Past or present tense? Why?
Answered here!
28. Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing?
Keep writing. And keep reading.
36. How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of?
For my Indian fandoms, my fic titles are a word in Sanskrit or Hindi (or occasionally Arabic). For all other fics, a song or poetry lyric or a memorable phrase from the fic.
My favorite title is probably Bansi, a fic for the Bollywood film Jodhaa Akbar, which means "flute" in Hindi. Flutes are associated with Lord Krishna, one of the key deities in Hinduism, and the fic, uh, is rated M...

omg I'm so sorry, I didn't realize you had answered my last ask, I had probably missed the notification!
for sure, it's such a nostalgic and refreshing feeling!
omg I definitely should check out Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, I am loving all these films coming out in Bollywood. did you watch Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga? I haven't fully watched it yet, but omg, I watched certain scenes and they caused a bunch of tears. and Regina Cassandra looks so amazing in it, she got me developing a crush on her in the movie LMAO. exactly, the drama makes it so entertaining to watch now. right, Jodhaa Akbar has such beautiful music, the visuals are beautiful, and I like how the romance isn't, like, instalove - it's actually so grounded and slowburn, which I appreciate so much in how realistic it is. I also love Aishwariya's nose rings in it omg. no, no, you're totally right - I also love Desi songs that sound more classic, like the kinds in Bajirao Mastani, and I don't think they're as common in Bollywood now, but they're so beautiful. omg that is such a sweet story, that she got asked to prom with the song! we love a prom date who has that good music taste
that is such a great memory, it's so nice because now you have such tender memories related to that film. you're making me so nostalgic to those kinds of outings with cousins, it was always so much fun when everyone as a group would go out and have fun. I need to check out the films, I also know Aishwariya in that film was an awakening for so many people, haha, she is so stunning
it is!! omg, they also nail enemies-to-lovers in that movie, and the two of them have such good chemistry. I had such a crush on him in that movie. and my teacher catching me is literally one of my most embarrassing moments LMAO
thank you so much!! and, right, it's actually so sad how so many people in South Asian families have been taught our dark body hair is something to look down on because of fucked up Eurocentric beauty standards. like, so many people in my family will urge me to wax and get rid of my body hair, and it's such a shame that we've come to become ashamed of our gorgeous hair
it’s okay love!! <3
no i haven’t watched that one yet but omg it has sonam kapoor!! i heard it was good and i really want to see it bc of the wlw representation. I love how Jodaa akbar is a slow burn kind of movie and ashwariya is so gorgeous in that film and honestly she’s always so gorgeous, all the women in bollywood are. Both Bajirao Mastani and padmaavat are movies now that have such beautiful songs and cinematography and about old time topics which is so cool to see nowadays if that makes any sense haha
mhm it is very nostalgic!! And yeah i knew her from other movies and stuff but damn the movie really made me love her even more and she was so hot in that movie.. someone who i really loved when i was younger was rani mukerji something about her was just attractive to me and i loved her movies as a kid and yeah her chemistry with shahid is so good in that movie!! have u watched any of her other older movies?? i remember seeing hum tum with her and saif ali khan at my cousins house for the first time and that was such a cute movie they’ve done a few together which i really like
yeah exactly!! I remember when i was younger and got into shaving bc i was so embarrassed of my arm hair bc i’m fairly light skinned so my hair is dark when it grows on my skin and i used to be so embarrassed and now it’s less and idk as much

Om Shanti Om
If you have no time to read any other aspect of this review/post: If you loved Moulin Rouge, you’ll love Om Shanti Om. This is a very very spoiler-lite review, but also, it’s on Netflix RIGHT NOW.
I was commissioned to stream this by @thepreciousthing, and I had seen it before, on her recommendation, actually, but I was drunk in the tub when I watched it and had missed some of the finer details. I remembered the broad strokes of the story and that it was a load of fun, but I’m glad I got to watch it again!
I like Bollywood very much, in the same way that I like Takarazuka: I recognize that it is pretty, that it is fun, and that I may need to gently place my brain in a box at the door, to be retrieved later. What I will give Om Shanti Om is it has one of the more coherent storylines of any Bollywood film I’ve watched, and also seems very cognizant of how silly and melodramatic Bollywood is, in a way that say, a movie like Jodhaa Akbar doesn’t really acknowledge. This gives it a lot of heart and grounds it in a way I haven’t found in a ton of Bollywood films.
Om Shanti Om is a three hour movie that is really two movies in one. Two movies with a vastly different tone, central conflict, and finale. You could watch them separately and almost be like, “Yeah, that was pretty enjoyable.” You would think having there be such a shift would make the movie awkward, but I don’t find it so. It’s almost as if you’re reading the novel and the sequel one after the other, but the sequel was thought of before the novel was a hit. The movie always knows where its going, and this is to its credit.
It is IMBUED with the sort of hypersaturated dramatics and musical theater that make Moulin Rouge such a fucking hit with me, and it took me FOREVER to figure out what I loved so much about this movie over and above liking Bollywood in general, and I think that’s it. It’s a got a REALLY similar feel to it to Moulin Rouge, if Moulin Rouge was slightly sillier in tone. But the level of OPERA LEVEL drama while being AWARE that it’s indulging in that, the very earnest protagonist who in any fair world would be a butch lesbian, the interweaving of love and tragedy, I think it hits that “formula” that I find weirdly, very difficult to find, but I love so much. I basically crave modern opera!!
Om Prakash himself is a delight in that he very much plays against what I would consider much of the standard Bollywood type: He is well-meaning, smitten and kind, but he is a low-hanging actor without much to his name, he’s not particularly masculine and tough, he constantly screws up and has a very winning sort of loserliness to him. He has very strong Haruka energy, I will say, in that he is very brave, and tries very hard, and sometimes cannot find his ass with both hands. Also he sings dramatic peans in white peasant shirts that are half open at one point, which I think we all know if Haruka had her druthers, is exactly where she’d be.
I also find his best friend Pappu to have strong, strong Mina energy and there is a situation that comes up in the course of the movie that DESPERATELY makes me want to rewrite this in my copious fucking free time that I obviously have why are there not two of me, one of whom who can write better than I am currently writing.
STOP READING NOW IF YOU HAVE DECIDED TO WATCH. IT’S ON NETFLIX. THINGS I CONSIDER MORE SPOILERY ARE BELOW.
The story does not go where you think it will. I almost didn’t say this, because I suppose I consider that a spoiler in itself and I have no desire to steal the “Wait, WHAT???” I experienced from anyone, because it really is a delicious HARD LEFT. But I generally am good at story beats anyhow, and Bollywood AIN’T EXACTLY FULL OF SURPRISES (in case anyone is like ‘OH AND LIKE AMERICAN ACTION MOVIES ARE’....no, no they are not) so I was genuinely shocked by where it ended up veering. Delighted! But surprised as all hell.
Om Shanti Om uses the resurrection trope in a way PEOPLE, NAMED DOC, WHO ARE ME, found satisfying. If you know anything about me you MUST understand what high fucking praise that is, because it is something I generally HATE. I was expecting them to pull an entire destined lovers thing, but they do not! More surprises from a movie that seems to both love and love to make fun of the entire Bollywood genre, while still telling a story that weaves together tragedy and revenge while still letting some things be left up in the air and not “neat.”
But honestly if you watch it for no other reason, please watch Om Shanti Om for the final song, which @thepreciousthing called, “Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 2, The Murder of Gonzago, in 7 minutes” which is the best joke about the movie that was made that entire night, I still laugh thinking about it because it’s completely right. If you do not get the reference, you’re probably cooler than the two of us, and also, don’t spoil yourself. Unless you refuse to watch this. In which case, who are you and why do you hate love and enjoyment?
OM DESCENDS ON A FUCKING CHAIR FROM THE CEILING DRESSED IN ALL WHITE. HARUKA WOULD WATCH THIS AND FUCKING ASPIRE.
Anyway, I found a version of the final song without the subtitle on it so you can technically watch this and not really be spoiled unless you speak Hindi. If nothing else convinces you to watch this movie, please let this absolute banger of a song do it for you. The drama! The tune! The passion! THE COSTUME CHANGES! I fucking love this song and I am so glad I was reminded of it.
youtube
As of right this moment, sitting here now, I would call this my favorite Bollywood movie I’ve ever seen. Sometimes when y’all recommend and commission shit I get such GLORIOUS jewels that I have no fucking idea how I missed.

10 Questions Tag
Rules: Answer ten questions, then write your own and tag ten people.
I was tagged by @illneverrecover (who by the way is one of the sweetest awesomest people I’ve ever met. I swear. I love you daddy 😉)
Tumblr media
Jackie’s Questions
1. What’s your favorite space/place when you just want to relax?
I actually really love my room, and having it cold, the fan running. I put up some string lights so at night it looks nice and twinkly ✨
2. Favorite song to play when you’re getting hyped? How about when you’re feeling sad/nostalgic?
OOO okay so BTS wise I have a couple hype songs: IDOL, ON, Baepsae, Fire
And then when I’m feeling sad/nostalgic I like Arijit Singh’s softer songs (a lot of yearning), and Louder than Bombs and like for heart wrenching I listen to Fake Love and Black Swan. I really like that feeling though (the feeling of sadness) so I listen to those quite a lot.
3. You have $100 and you have to spend it on yourself. How are you spending it?
Ermmmm, I’d buy BTS merch and maybe some nice clothes? Idk 😂
4. What’s a movie you’ve seen repeatedly but never tire of?
Devil wears Prada, Jodhaa Akbar, quite a lot of Hindi movies tbh!
5. What is your favorite dessert?
Honestly, anything that’s cold. Sorbet, froyo, tiramisu, ice cream cake (though thick thicc ice cream can get too rich for me)
6. Tell me something that has made you happy recently.
I talked to an old friend I hadn’t talked to in a while and she made me really happy.
7. What’s your astrological sign(s)? What’s one quality of your sun sign that you think you embody?
I’m an Aries sun, Capricorn moon, and Leo rising! I like to think I’m a little headstrong and stubborn in what I believe in, and I like to think I’m a natural leader! (though again, I’m not sure. I could just be bossy, who knows) 😅
8. We all have one idol/bias that we just kind of want to fist fight. Who you fighting?
LMAOOOO Probably Mark Lee. HE JUST SHOWED UP IN MY LIFE WITHOUT ANY PRIOR KNOWLEDGE GOING ALL, “Uh you think you big boy throwing three stacks…” I- DJFLBASJHFLKS
9. Do you have any pets? If so, show me (if you feel comfortable!)
I do not! Thought I would love to have a dog, Maybe when I get my own house
10. Tell me one thing that makes you feel completely badass (whether it’s a clothing item, object, skill set you have, etc) so I can hype you up.
Ermmm, I love dancing. I think I’m a good dancer! And also my writing? Idk it’s a quieter side to me (she says as she posts writing on her blog) but when I tell stories: either through dance, singing or writing I feel very powerful you know?
Tumblr media
Hehehe okay now my turn!
My Questions
1. What is the biggest life lesson you have learned so far?
2. What is the number 1 thing on your bucket list?
3. Which country (that you haven’t been to) would you like to visit?
4. What’s your favorite food to cook for yourself/others?
5. What is your happy place?

Saw the fic title meme done by @misshoneywheeler- list your last 20 fic titles and answer the questions- because I thought it was very fun to run through my AO3 listing! I’m doing the same thing that she did: including where the title came from for each one. Tagging anyone who wants to play, as usual; this really is very fun!
one burning candle, one wind-whipped flame: The Old Guard fic, a character study of Joe and then Joe and Nicky’s relationship. Title comes from the song “Fires of War” from the video-game Middle Earth: Shadows of War.
here’s to the strongest fighter, here’s to the last survivor: Silmarillion, Earwen, Nerdanel and Anaire go to Middle-Earth to save their children. Title comes from “It’s got my name on it,” by Sarah Reeves.
and i will be nimble and i will be quick; i will overcome all of this: Silmarillion, character study of Lalwen, second daughter of Finwe. Title comes from “I’m not Afraid,” by Tommee Profitt.
oh, how far you are from home: GOT/LOTR Crossover, where Sansa wakes up after her father’s head is cut off to meet Boromir. Title comes from “May it Be,” by Enya.
i imagined a dark world where the stars clamor to be inside us: Silmarillion, character study of Findis, eldest daughter of Finwe. Title comes from the poem by Richard Jackson.
dawn is coming, open your eyes: A study of Percy Weasley after the war. Title comes from Jose Gonzalez’s song, “Stay Alive.”
courage is the passport when your old world disappears: Good Omens modern, human, Leap Year AU. Title comes from the Celtic Woman song, “Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears.”
wait, wait, wait for me: Fleabag fic of the Priest and Fleabag meeting again after they grow old. Title comes from Of Monsters and Men’s song “Little Talks.”
made weak by time and fate, but strong in will: James and Lily Potter survive. Title comes from the poem “Ulysses” by Tennyson.
you are the universe in ecstatic motion: Mehrunisa character study, from Padmaavat. Title comes from Rumi’s poem.
sons of life’s longing for itself: Good Omens story of a Warlock with magical powers. Title comes from the Kahlil Gibran poem, “On Children.”
they say we’re out of control and some say we’re sinners: Aziraphale character study from Good Omens. Title comes from the Sam Smith, “Fire on Fire.”
i’ve been working my hands down to the bones: Ocean’s 8 AU of ASOIAF. Title comes from “Money Run Low.”
a tempest, a cyclone, a goddamned hurricane: Sansa can see ghosts. Title comes from the Natalie Merchant song, “Ophelia.”
fear not for the future; weep not for the past: In which Catelyn tells Jon who his mother is. Title comes from Percy Shelley.
to the overwhelming light surrounding us: King Arthur: Legend of the Sword fic, of Catia (the daughter of Vortigern) who’s brought back to life and falls in love with Arthur. Title comes from the Saturn song, “Sleeping at last.”
and we can see the future and the dreams it’s made of: Jodhaa Akbar AU of ASOIAF, with everyone racebent to be desi, JonxSansa. Title comes from the Mikky Ekko song, “Place for us.”
this is the map of my heart, the landscape after cruelty: Fusion of East of the Sun and West of the Moon and Tam Lin, JonxSansa. Title comes from Richard Siken.
dry your eyes, there’s no cause to weep; the weather is fine and the road isn’t steep: Post-canon fic of Sansa and Jon getting together, from Sansa’s POV. Title comes from Heather Dale’s song, “Each Step.”
i laugh at the concept of life as a simple result of the sun: Sansa tells Jon that he’s an incest baby, modern AU. Title comes from Heather Dale’s song “Hunter.”
1. How many are you happy with?
Most of them! Probably sixteen.
2. How many are… not great?
Four.
3. How many did you scramble for at the last minute?
...all of them.
4. How many did you know before you started writing/creating, or near the beginning?
Absolutely none.
5. How many are quotes from songs or poems?
19!!!
6. How many are other quotes?
One, which... might well be part of a poem. Idk if the Percy Shelley quote’s a poem or not, but if it is then they’re all quotes.
7. Which best reflects the plot of the story/content of the fanwork?
I feel like most of them do, but the one that I keep getting comments about is “a tempest, a cyclone, a goddamned hurricane,” which feels right? I think? Sansa’s very much a storm in human skin in the fic XDD
8. Which best reflects the theme of the story/fanwork?
“Oh, how far you are from home,” feels like a beautiful ode to Sansa in this story.
9. Which best reflects the character voice of the story/POV of the fanwork?
Again, I feel like most of them do, but the one I’m... happiest about... is the “dawn is coming, open your eyes” title. The entire song really feels so hopeful and so fierce and so desiring- and that’s the mentality that I really want Percy to have throughout/at the end of the story.
10. Which is your favorite?
The Mother Three fic (”here’s to the strongest fighter, here’s to the last survivor”) holds a very special place in my heart right now for the themes of familial love, duty, and sheer courage involved in it.

Jaipur
Tumblr media
Known in the world of tourism as the Pink City, Jaipur stuns all with its characteristic feminine hue. It is a pleasant sight to behold against the backdrop of the imposing Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts. It combines its historical allure with all the features of an Indian metropolis.
Jaipur is one corner of the famous Golden Triangle of India, the other two being Delhi and Agra. When you plan a trip to Rajasthan, Jaipur is always an essential part of your itinerary. There are so many attractions here itself that you can expect to spend at least three days in the Pink City.
Best time to Visit Jaipur
India has three main seasons, namely summer, winter and monsoon. The quality of your Indian trips is often decided by the weather. We have given here a brief description of best time to visit Jaipur in all the three seasons.
Summer: -
Summers in Jaipur start from mid-March and last till June. Rajasthan has an arid climate and technically, is best avoided during high temperatures. It is hot and dry throughout the day, and as a tourist unused to the harsh weather, you are more susceptible to dehydration and fatigue. If you are visiting Jaipur during the summer, be sure to pick air-conditioned transport. Always keep a bottle of water and snacks handy.
Monsoons: -
The Jaipur rains start from July and last till September. It is quite a pleasant time to visit if you love the rain and to be in nature. The city of Jaipur takes on a fresh green look during the monsoons. August witnesses the highest amount of rainfall in the four months of the season. A Jaipur trip will be more budget-friendly and less crowded if you visit during the monsoons. You will also get a chance to visit some local festivals such as Teej.
Winter: -
Winters are quite the opportune time to visit Rajasthan. The nights are bitterly cold, but it is manageable for the sake of basking in the winter sunshine that envelops Jaipur during the day. Precisely why the best season to visit Jaipur is winters. It lasts from October to March and is the peak tourist season. Jaipur in January is a must-visit for bookworms, because of the annual Literary Fest. Even if you are not very keen on books, there are a plethora of other activities to keep you occupied elsewhere in the city.
Here is a quick summary of all the seasonal details…
SUMMER
March to June - 34˚C to 45˚C
MONSOONS
July to September - 27˚c to 34˚C
WINTERS
October to March - 5˚C to 32˚C (can drop to 0˚C at night)
How to Reach: -
Thanks to India’s transport and travel network, most of the big cities are very well connected to each other. Jaipur, being the capital city of Rajasthan, has no dearth of travel services either. Although your Jaipur tour package would have all the information, here is what you must know prior to visiting the tourism board –
By Air: -
The Sanganer Airport in Jaipur is well connected with Indian metropolitans and the Middle East through the Air India, GoAir and Jet Airways airlines. The approximate travel time to Jaipur from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata are 2 hours and 10 minutes.
By Rail: -
Indian Railways is a vast operation to connect even the remotest parts of the country. Rajasthan, therefore, it is very well connected to the rest of India by train as well. Again, the approximate travel time varies widely and depends upon the starting point. If you are traveling from Delhi, you will need just 4 hours. However, to travel from Chennai to Jaipur by train, you may need 36-37 hours.
By Road: -
Rajasthan boasts of well-maintained National Highways out of which NH8 is the preferred one if you want to travel by road. The two most common modes of transport are usually buses or private cars while going to Jaipur. The travel time can again vary from 5 hours to 24 hours, depending on the starting point of your ride, in this case, Delhi and Mumbai respectively.
Places to Visit in Jaipur: -
Rajasthan is known as one of the best travel destinations of India. Jaipur is the capital city and thus boasts of many magnificent palaces and forts built by the Rajasthan Royals. It is a hotspot for history lovers who want to imagine the days long gone exactly as they were before. Here are some popular places which should be part of your Jaipur trip package:
City Palace: -
The City Palace is located in the heart of Jaipur and dates back to the 19th century. It is a marvelous blend of Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture. Many parts of the palace complex have been converted into art galleries and museums so that the visitors can see for themselves the royal lifestyle of the kings and queens of the city. Chandra Mahal within the City Palace complex serves as the residence for the current royal family of Jaipur.
Hawa Mahal: -
The Hawa Mahal is a palace constructed in the middle of the bustling city and is a very prominent landmark in the Pink City. It has plenty of jharokas or small windows so that the ladies of the royal family could observe the daily comings-and-goings of the city while remaining invisible to the common man. The Hawa Mahal is built of red and pink sandstone, and the structure allows complete ventilation even during peak summers. That is why it is named Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds.

Jantar Mantar: -
In stark contrast to the opulent palaces of the city, Jantar Mantar is a science observatory in Jaipur. It lauds the astronomical skills of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh at a time when the science itself was very new to the world. Different astronomical instruments made of stone and brass are fixed on the ground, and hundreds of curious tourists can observe numerous astrological positions with the naked eye. The Samrat Yantra in the observatory is the world’s largest sundial till date and deserves a special mention. It is indeed an astronomical heritage of not just Jaipur but entire India in an era when we are giving up our Indian culture.

Amer Fort: -
The Amer Fort is located in Amer town, at a distance of 11 kilometers from Jaipur. It was constructed by Raja Man Singh I and is a brilliant example of Rajput architecture. It also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and cities. Many famous Bollywood movies such as Jodhaa Akbar, Mughal-E-Azam and Veer have been shot here. It overlooks the serene Maota Lake and is visited by umpteen visitors every year.
Things to Do in Jaipur: -
Jaipur is a perfect mélange of history and modernity. Don’t fret if you’re not a history buff; we have got you covered. How would you like to gorge yourself on some delicious Rajasthani meals, or shop till you drop? Read on… We have listed the top and amazing things to do in Jaipur:
Enjoy the Sights at the Jal Mahal: -
You have to see it to believe it. The Jal Mahal is actually built in the middle of the Mansagar Lake nestled between the Nahargarh Hills. It is built with an exotic flair of both Mughal and Rajput architecture. Initially used as a summer retreat by the royal family, the Jal Mahal is now a tourist attraction. You can relax by the side of the lake to feel the cool breeze and take some really amazing photos of the palace as the sun disappears behind the hills.

Elephant Ride At Amer Fort: -
A visit to the golden Amer Fort is incomplete without an elephant ride. You can explore the huge gateways and cobbled paths of the fort while sitting upon the very animal which once graced the royal stables. Be sure to go for the ride in the mornings, as the elephants are well-rested then and you will have an enjoyable experience.
Choki Dhani: -
If you are a foodie, this is the place for you. This village resort offers you the best of Jaipur with puppet shows, folk music, acrobatics and of course, delicious Rajasthani food. Tuck into the mouthwatering dishes at the open air restaurants while you take in the electrifying ambiance of Choki Dhani. It is a perfect break from the city life with its rustic appeal and natural surroundings.

Shopping In Jaipur: -
Johri Bazaar in Jaipur is a perfect representation of the city. Most of the shops are painted pink, and you will get all the trinkets you want here. You can take your pick from dresses to jewelry and even Jaipuri quilts. Kundan jewelry is very popular in Rajasthan, and you will find a lot of it at Johri Bazaar. Believe me; a nice traditional bracelet can make all the difference in the world to your jeans-and-tee-shirt ensemble.
Festivals and Events: -
India is a land of festivals, and Rajasthan more so because of its deep connections with its past. Most of the festivals and events in Jaipur revolve around their regional beliefs and old Indian traditions. Some of the most popular festivals are described below. Joyous Jaipur’s festivals one need to be part of:
The Elephant Festival: -
Celebrated every year in the months of February and March, the Elephant festival is unique to Jaipur and is worth a watch. It is celebrated on Phalgun Poornima. Elephants are decked up beautifully and taken out in processions. The highlights of this festival are the elephant dances, elephant polo, and the tug-of-war between elephants and the people present at the festival.

Teej Festival: -
Teej is an important festival for the ladies of Jaipur. All the women dress in traditional attires and wear jewelry. Married women fast and pray for the long lives of their husbands, while unmarried girls pray to find a desirable match. People gather in temples to pray to Goddess Parvati. A number of folk dances and traditional songs are presented on this day.
The Kite Festival: -
The kite festival is held in Jaipur on the 14th of January every year. There is a myriad of colorful kites in the sky during the day. At night, tiny lamps are attached to the kites flown which then make for an alluring sight in the deepening twilight. A number of kite flying competitions are held. People also take a dip in the holy river Ganga to purify themselves.
Jaipur Literature Festival: -
The Jaipur Literature Festival was started in 2006 and is the biggest literary fest today in the Asia Pacific. It is a five day festival in January and is attended by both Indian and foreign authors who indulge in reading and discussion sessions. The audience has a chance to get autographed books. In the evenings, various musical shows are held. The literary festival is a must visit if you are a bookworm.
Food in Jaipur: -
Inhospitable Rajasthan, you will find all cuisines adapted to your liking. Rajasthan’s own food is very delicious and is definitely recommended to all tourists. The most popular food of Rajasthan is undoubtedly dal-baati-churma and lalmass (red meat) along with ghewar, a sweetmeat.
You can check out various cafes in Jaipur such as the Anokhi Café and Spice Court if you want to sample the Rajasthani fare. There are restaurants such as Jaipur Modern Kitchen and Brown Sugar if you just want to hang out and have continental snacks. Of course, you have options like the Cinnamon (Taj) and the Suvarna Mahal if you prefer a sophisticated meal setting. And if you are like most Indians, be sure to visit Fashion Street and Bapu Bazaar for street food that will tickle your taste buds.

Wangxian Bollywood Mix annotations
Companion to this mix!
As mentioned previously, with one exception, they’re all from movies where two lovers are kept apart for long periods of time thanks to some combination of external forces and their own emotional baggage. But shhh, it’s fine, most some of them turn out okay!
1. “Ajab Si” from Om Shanti Om
This song is basically just Wuji; it swells up dramatically every time the protagonist sees his love interest and then everything goes into slow motion, and it’s both tongue-in-cheek and 100% earnest. “Tongue-in-cheek yet 100% earnest” is the overall vibe of Om Shanti Om generally, as it gently pokes fun at the 1970s-era filmi tropes it invokes while also playing them totally straight so you gradually go from giggling to EMOTIONALLY INVESTED. Please love yourself and watch it--it’s on Netflix!
The protagonist and his love interest in this film are separated when they die--yes, both of them--and are reunited in the next life and get revenge on the man who killed them. On brand for Wangxian! It’s even got imagery of things floating in the breeze like the lanterns, awww.
Aankhon mein teri (In your eyes) Ajab si ajab si adayein hai (There is a special kind of grace) Dil ko banade joh patang (What makes my heart into a kite) Saansein yeh teri woh hawaein hai (Your breath is that wind)
2. “Tum Se Hi” from Jab We Met
This is one of my favorite love songs EVER, full stop.  Jab We Met single-handedly redeems happy romances as a genre for me by being character-driven rather than plot-driven. The two leads are good influences on each other and foster each other’s growth (even outside of their eventual romantic relationship!) rather than one “fixing” the other, which is something I appreciate about Wangxian as well.
Chhode na chhote kabhi (Even on separating it doesn't separate) Todhe na toote kabhi (Even on breaking it doesn't break) Joh dhaga tum se judh gaya wafaa ka (The string of faithfulness has been attached with you) Main tera sarmaya hoon (I am because of you) Joh bhi main ban paya hoon (Whatever I've become today) Tum se hi, tum se hi (Is with you only, with you only)
3. “Jashn-E-Bahara” from Jodhaa Akbar
Jodhaa Akbar is the slowest of slow burns, as the title characters spend over TWO HOURS of this three-hour film gradually developing mutual respect and affection. Akbar is smitten with Jodhaa from the start and just sort of wanders around gazing at her like she hung the moon, which is where this song comes in. Little does he know that a combination of his own bad decisions (which he answers for immediately) and political intrigues will keep the two of them apart EVEN LONGER THAN ANTICIPATED.
Karte toh hai saath safar (She travels with me) Faasle hai phir bhi magar (But still there are distances between us) Jaise milte nahi kisi dariya ke do kinare (Like the two shores of the river don't meet) Paas hai phir bhi paas nahi (We are near but still not close enough) Humko yeh gham raas nahi (This grief is not acceptable to me) Sheeshay ki ek deewar hai jaise darmiyan (As if there is a glass wall between us)
4. “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
I’ll be real with you: I haven’t seen this movie because one of the lead actors gives me hives. Luckily for me, @rated-r-for-fear has seen it and therefore knows its soundtrack enough to recommend this song. HDDCS contains a pair of lovers who are tragically separated and a pair of lovers who take forever to mutually figure out their feelings! And this song somehow manages to be melodramatic in a good way.
Tadap tadap ke is dil (The yearning and torment of this heart) Se aah nikalti rahi (Keeps sighing outward) Mujhko saza di pyar ki (You gave me a punishment in love) Aaisa kya gunaah kiya (What crime had I committed?) Toh lut gaye haan, lut gaye (I'm destroyed, yes ,I'm destroyed) Toh lut gaye hum teri mohabbat mein (I'm destroyed in your love)
5. “Silsila Yeh Chahat Ka” from Devdas
If you're watching a Bollywood movie and the subtitles mention “Romeo,” chances are that what the character actually said was “Devdas” (and I go UGHHH because the two stories have very different themes!). There are multiple film adaptations of Devdas, the best-known in the USA probably being the one from 2002. The song in question is sung by Devdas’s childhood sweetheart Paro, who’s been keeping a lamp lit for him unfailingly since he left home a decade ago. While Devdas turns out to be a total fuckboy and WWX would NEVER, this song suits LWJ’s devotion during the timeskip years.
Silsila yeh chahat ka (This connection of our love) Na maine bujhne diya (I haven't let it go out) Oh piya yeh diya (Oh my beloved, this lamp) Na bujha hai, na bujhega (Hasn't extinguished, nor will it) Meri chahat ka diya (The lamp of my love)
6. “Main Yahaan Hoon” from Veer-Zaara
Veer-Zaara is another story of lovers torn apart, this time because of the decades-long political conflict between India and Pakistan! While this song is metaphorical in Veer and Zaara’s cases when it occurs, they do eventually get to reunite after years of separation, so Wangxian can have it as a resurrection song as a treat, because... he’s here. :’)
Jaanam dekh lo mitt gayi dooriyan (Dearest, look, the distances have gone) Main yahaan hoon, yahaan hoon, yahaan hoon, yahaan (I'm here, I'm here, I’m here, here) Kaisi sarhadein, kaisi majbooriyan (Beyond borders and helplessness) Main yahaan hoon, yahaan hoon, yahaan hoon, yahaan (I'm here, I'm here, I’m here, here)
7. “Taal Se Taal” from Taal
I haven’t seen this movie either; I just like the song! In this film’s case, the lovers are initially kept apart by classism and family meddling... and musical collaboration is a big theme! Thanks to @rated-r-for-fear for reminding me of the full version of this song, too!
Jindri behaal hai (My life is chaos) Sur hai na taal hai (There is no tune nor rhythm) Aaja sanwariya (Please come, my beloved) Taal se taal mila (Harmonise your rhythm with my rhythm)
8. “Ishq Sufiyana” from The Dirty Picture
This one doesn’t quite fit the “lovers kept apart” pattern, because they’re mutually antagonistic for years and then one of them dies. I just really like this song. It’s so sweet! But also intense! And also has spiritual imagery! Also the flowing white that whirling dervishes wear remind me of Lan robes. (”Sufiyana” refers to Sufism, an ascetic/mystic practice of Islam that prioritizes oneness with God. So it’s like... “my love for you transcends this world,” kinda.) Jahan tu hai wahin sab hai (Wherever you are, everything is there for me) Tere lab mile, mere lab khile (My lips blossomed when they met your lips) Ab door kya hai jaana (Now I don't want to go far from you) Tere waaste mera ishq sufiyana (For you, my love is selfless) Mera ishq sufiyana (My love is selfless)

Characterization meme: Amy, Jodhaa, and Avantika!
i tamy’s done!
avantika: 1. that whole child soldier thing lol. there is only one goal and it is devasena’s liberation etc etc 2. this means that really everything about her personality has been honed towards her goal so any personal likes or dislikes or traits must be really strong to survive the indoctrination. i do think that, more than her fellow soldiers, she actually believes in the Cause and wants to save devasena for herself. if avantika wasn’t forced into it i think she would have chosen it anyway, and thats important to me especially when she is allowed to step away from her duties and ask herself why shes doing this3. i see her native personality as a combination of devasena and kattapa, or what i can extrapolate from kattapa outside of his status as a slave. i dont think she would be as hot headed as devasena, i think she’d be more calculating. i see her as a kind of glacier, where she takes her time to think of all angles but once shes decided shes unstoppable. kattapa always seems to be very level headed to me as an actual person. i think she and baahu and kattapa are all a little more grounded (probably because for better or worse theyve got some stable sense of self... or lack thereof with kattapa yuck) while devasena and shivu are all over the place bc they’re struggling for self definition and terrified someone else will force them into this role they arent meant for.4. i see her as someone who values non transactional kindness, which is why she globs on to shivu in my au so quickly. theres no reason for him to help her but he does and he seems to like her without expecting anything in return. this also somehow fits in with her liking pretty things. the sense of her valuing all these things that she sees as fragile and beautiful and so liable to being broken or exploited, and her wanting to protect them. 5. she could pull of a buzzcut6. she sees herself as expendable, and also hates mahishmati until she figures out that the people arent so bad. self value and mahishmati related nuance (sparked by their own internal revolutionary movement bc she shouldnt sympathize with the people who want to exterminte her) are all arc moments for her.
Jodhaa:1. the husband thing, where she cant think of him by his actual name. i also see her switching between how she perceives the man her husband, the man Emperor of Hindustan and her husband the Emperor. 2. dissatisfaction with the way she was raised. its important for the compromise to be a two way street for me, and one where together they have an equitable relationship based on love trust and mutual admiration for one another’s skills. i feel like she has to see the flaws inherent in the way she was raised. (the bartering, the poison before loss of honor)3. shes kind, intelligent, proud. both of them are looking for unconditional love, which they havent really experienced. all of their prior relationships were v transactional and based on what they did for the other party imo. depending on what point the fic is set in i think the Romance aspect is important in terms of how she interacts with everyone bc once shes got the assurance of love she can be so much more confident. 4. she actually wants to be a productive ruler who does things rather than frivolous. she could have spent all her time in the harem, but she wants love and respect, she wants to have a proper place in her new home, and eventually she wants to be Empress because she thinks she can do a good job at it. 5. she probably learns how to sing qawwalis and jalal just cries like a baby. they figure out some syncretic balance and talk for far too long into the night about religion and culture and history and how the rajputs were high on opium every battle. jalal probably has a favorite mirabai song, and picks up rajasthani. 6. oh! at some point she ends up reading his correspondence for him. (akbar is theorized to have been dyslexic so this isnt really a thing where she can teach him to read in her spare time.) the og akbar is said to have a fantastic memory so maybe he recites a bunch of stories for her amusement.
