Saturday Art I spent the day checking out Brandeis’ Rose Art Museum and the Armenian Museum in Watertown.  Chris Burden’s Light of Reason was commissioned for the Rose and recalls his earlier work in front of the LACMA. The Rose was terrific- great assortment of contemporary and modern art including some works by Frida Kahlo.  The Armenian Museum had an exhibit of Joan Agajanian Quinn’s collection from LA in the 60′s and 70′s. Some 300 of her artist friends made portraits of her over the years, including David Hockney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Helmut Newton, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The last two images are some of those portraits.

Sometimes people assume the accumulation is the project of an off-the-charts narcissist, and this makes Quinn laugh, because it’s really the opposite—the portraits are all capturing the same person, so each highlights the hand of its artist all the more. “It’s not about me,” she explained. “It’s about the artists. Three hundred artists are painting one bowl of fruit.”
Joan Agajanian Quinn by Duggie Fields (1980), Allen Ruppersberg (1983), Robert Mapplethorpe (1985), Jean-Michel Basquiat (1986), Andy Warhol and Rupert Jasen Smith (1988), Elsa Flores (1996), Ed Ruscha (1997), David Hockney (2013) and more
