I'm pretty excited for the new RJG movie!! A couple nights ago I put Back To Bortron 7 on repeat and doodled what I believe is my first? PropulSean piece. they're so cute. they're a lil bit older here maybe 14-15 :] big chungus Sean in a UFO hoodie is so real to me specifically. (( the second slide is just to show off jet's hair since i ended up hiding most of it :/ ))

Autistic traits in some RJG characters

Jet - stims by marching with his elbows out when he walks, takes things literally, hates ice cream due to sensory issues, very impulsive, is an alien - which is a common way to explaining autism to small children, feeling like an alien from another planet

Sean - huge special interest in space, comfort object is his Neil Armstrong action figure, gets frustrated when things don’t go exactly the way he planned it or he wants it, nervous all the time, displays a lack of interest in pretend play in “Backyard Moon Base,” where he struggles to use his imagination

Sydney - her obsession with Commander Cressida, along with Greek Mythology to a lesser extent, could be read as a special interest

Mitchell - extremely socially awkward, prefers to be alone, special interest in detective work, seems to connect better with his pet dog than with people, takes things literally (in “Detective Mindy,” he thought that the kitchen counter was an actual black hole, but his dad was just using an expression), doesn’t understand jokes (“Jet’s First Halloween”), doesn’t always make eye contact (“Solar System Bake Off,” during the scene where Mitchell said he likes Mindy’s cake), sounds monotonous sometimes (“Eye in the Sky”)

Stella - likes being by herself, obsession with the Great Galacto could be read a special interest, socially awkward (the scene where she bumps into Mitchell is a good example of this), poor social skills in general, quite blunt, impulsive behaviors (when she found out that Jet was the number one Great Galacto fan, her first instinct was to go to earth to try and get rid of him), her saying “excelsior” all the time could be a vocal stim (and since the catchphrase actually came from Galacto, it’s another part of her special interest in him) in fact, she says “excelsior” in the movie way more times than Jet does

EDIT: I forgot to mention that Stella's comfort object is her spaceship thingy. She panics when she sees that it isn't in her bag.

Science Saturday

This week’s science lesson is “Jets in Action” from the 1962 edition of Exploring Science Six, the final publication in a progressive six-volume elementary science-education series by the Boston-based textbook publisher Allyn & Bacon, written by Walter A. Thurber and edited by Paul E. Smith. The chapter on jets details various jet propulsion systems and even presents a conceptual nuclear-powered aircraft. At the end, the young student is presented with six comprehension questions, some of which we could hardly answer without reading the text. Thank goodness we hold the Exploring Science series!

The illustrations shown here are by Albert and Violet Jousset, George Hardy, and Robert Candy. The Exploring Science series is part of our Historical Curriculum Collection.

In the PBS kids’ show, Ready Jet Go! Jet Propulsion (voiced by Ashleigh Ball) is the main character and an alien from Borton 7. He relocates to Earth with his parents to study its customs. Once they settle in Washington state, Jet befriends Sydney, Sean, and Mindy. Jet has red hair and wears a blue puffy coat with blue pants and grey boots. To make his boots look a little more like they do on the show, you can wrap a red boot lace around them to give them their signature pop of color. Collect all the accessories of Jet Propulsion costume from Ready Jet Go! for Halloween and cosplay.

Work:

Continued my draft soundtrack case study for my visual media composition module, of course

Took more notes for the hyperpop music poster presentation I have to do next Monday

Play/Self-Care:

Took two walks with my mum to the city and back

Went looking for shoes, even though I got them

Ate kebabs and drank a milkshake from GDK and Creams respectively

I wasn't being too productive today since my deadline for the draft soundtrack case study is in two days. I haven't made an Excel cue sheet for the visual media music module besides making two compositions in video form and one composition in audio, so fuck it. I need to go one step further and get started on the next module as soon as it is assigned. The event group meeting deadline getting past due was bad enough, but I won't go for another one this time. Looks like I'll be needing my music to take away the stress, or my breathing technique.

I want to shut off the world when I listen to music because no matter if I'm reading a book, playing an open-world video game, taking a nap, or doing a mini-study session, it helps me get rid of the drama around me on a real-life basis, dissipating the fury inside of me. It's like Hans Christian Anderson always said: "When words fail, music speaks." Only a hot-tempered moron would get stressed out over nothing to the realization they had done something silly that released their temper to start off with.

Jet and Sean in Back to Bortron 7

This special had so many Propulsean moments for no reason. There's a lot of tender and important scenes between the two of them. You could even make the argument that their relationship is the core of the movie.

First, Sean doesn't want to go to Bortron 7 at first, but Jet persuades him through the 'power of song.' A little while later, Sean has a 'dream' of sorts where he and Jet sing the most iconic song of the movie - and one of the most iconic songs of the show in general - There's No Planet Like My Planet. It's so nice, that they did a reprise of it at the end of the movie. Everything from the melody, to the lyrics, to the animation in this scene is wonderful.

The color palette in this scene just so happens to look like the bi flag. This is very obviously a deliberate choice. Bortron 7 is red/orange, not pink, and Earth is blue, not purple, but they used those colors anyway.

Also, before the song starts, the Mothership goes into Interstellar Superdrive, which is rainbow-colored. Coincidence? I think not!

And the song itself is how Earth is lovely, but Bortron 7 might be nice too, and how they're very different but also similar. This ties into the movie's overall theme about Earth. Despite it taking place on Bortron 7, Jet and the gang have to find a way to save the presentation so the Propulsions can stay on Earth. They decide to make it about how Earth is full of water. So, the song, in addition to being a great Propulsean moment, is thematically relevant.

There are some more Propulsean moments throughout the special, whether they are big, like when Jet and Sean sit alone together in the lake hologram, or small, like when Jet briefly puts his hand on Sean's back when they are visiting Bortron 7's three moons. It just goes to show how strong their relationship is.
