A late posting but I wanted to remember my grandmother, Lela Virginia Farnell Williams, who died this date in 1914, when my father was just 10 years old. She was born to Randel and Sallie (Jacobs) Farnell on 28 September 1876 in Live Oak, Suwannee County, Florida. Her father was a Florida Homesteader. She married my grandfather, William Gainer Williams on 12 February 1893. They moved to NYC in 1899 and then to Jersey City, NJ about 1903. My father was born there in 1904. Like her mother before her, she was a dressmaker. She died on Palm Sunday in 1914 from Polycystic kidney disease. She is buried in New York Bay Cemetery, in Jersey City. It's unseasonably warm here in New Jersey, but I can enjoy the nice weather anyway for now. Headed to the Colgate Clock in Paulus Hook this morning. In the background you can see the Central Railroad of NJ train terminal, which took immigrants from Ellis Island to destinations around the country. The original clock dates back to 1908 when it was on top of three Colgate-Palmolive factory in Jersey City. On this rainy day, a sneak peek of colorful joy! LHS is thrilled to announce that local artist @distoart has been working on a mural that will eventually cover the entire front of our building! The mural will feature the ecosystems of Jersey City- from our beautiful natural spaces to our mirrored high-rises, containing many of the wild and domestic animals who call our fields and our apartments home. @distoart has been diligently working from photos of the cats, dogs and, other animals who have come through LHS on their way to adoption or wildlife rehabilitation. And, before you ask: YES Jersey City is full of urban wildlife, and they’re so important to our ecosystem, and to preventing the encroachment of disease-spreading mice and rats.
