Ivanov Seniors Graduate!
Tumblr media
Ivanov Seniors experienced a bittersweet day today, even more so than any usual High School Graduation, as over the celebrations and festivities hung a black cloud of doom.
After the conference officially announcing that the Empire was at war with Windenburg, all foreign students were immediately sent back to their respective countries and families- except for the graduating seniors, who were allowed to stay a few more weeks in order to complete their courses and celebrate this momentous milestone.

Lady Josephine Arrington celebrated her big day with her parents, Princess Natasha and Jamie Arrington, Duke and Duchess Eastmeadow, and her younger brothers, Theodore, Marquess Branmar, and Christopher, Earl Maymour. Lady Josephine will be continuing her education at Britechester University where she plans to major in Ballet Performance, and one day transfer to the Royal Ballet Academy and follow in her parents' footsteps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miss Wren Hathaway was joined by her mother, Megan Ivanov, Duchess Arnsey, her step-father, Prince Nickolai Ivanov, her step-sister, Princess Victoria Yang, and her husband, Lord Louis Yang. Miss Hathaway will be joining her friend and cousin, Lady Josephine, at Britechester University, where she will be studying pre-med, in the hopes of also following in her mother's footsteps and one day becoming a pediatrician.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prince Grant Ivanov proved his naysayers wrong when he walked across the stage with a perfect 4.0 GPA, and celebrated his accomplishment with his father and step-mother, Prince Yuri and Kacie Ivanov, Earl and Countess Thornleigh, and his little sister, Princess Alexandria Ivanov. Prince Grant has chosen to defer his enrollment to Britechester University in favor of volunteering for active military service. When he does return to college, he will be majoring in Criminal Justice Advocacy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only a few short months after she had transfered to IRA from a school in Komorebi, Miss Reyna Medieros, the ambassadress' daughter, graduated with top marks despite the chaos of changing schools mid-year. She was joined by her parents, Mr. Ignas and Ambassador Samantha Medieros, as well as her younger brother, Ricardo Medieros. Miss Medieros will be attending Foxbury Institute for her first year of college, and hopes one day to transfer to Mount Komorebi University to continue her studies in Komorebian Culture and Diplomacy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crown Princess Claude Pelletier shocked no one when she made Valedictorian- and celebrated this huge accomplishment with her mother, Queen Regent Genevieve, and little brother, King Adam Pelletier. The Queen Regent was heard telling the Dauphine that her father was "there in spirit, and so, so proud." Crown Princess Claude will be joining Lady Josephine and Miss Hathaway at Britechester University, where she plans to double major in Foreign Languages and World History.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His Lordship, Viscount Beckham Landgraab, walked across the stage in front of his parents, Princess Carolin and Soren Landgraab, Duke and Duchess Clovervale, and his older sister, Lady Brianne. The Viscount is choosing to defer his collegiate experience until after the war and instead has volunteered for the Oasis Springs Military Service. After the war, he plans to attend "whatever school Malie ends up at" but wherever he goes, he'd like to study Music Performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Princess Malie celebrated her culture by wearing a Sulani Lei as she walked across the stage, in honor of her mother, grandmother, and younger sister who could not be at her graduation. Sulani is one of the island nations in the Southern Sea currently being occupied by Windenburgian Naval Forces. But Malie did not celebrate alone. She was able to be joined by her paternal Aunt and Uncle, Queen Misha and King Cesare Colona, and grandfather, Prince Widower Alfonso Colona, all three of whom currently reside in Glimmerbrooke. Princess Malie will be continuing her education at Britechester University for the duration of the war, then plans to transfer to the Chieftain's International University in Sulani when she's able to. She hopes to double major in Sulani History and Mythology, and Sports Medicine.

— Saia da jaula ou eu vou matá-lo. — Whittaker soltou os elos e cambaleou para trás.
— Bem, olha só para isso. — Jeferson riu. — Sabe, eu acho que ele realmente se importa com ele.
— Sim, — Cooper disse a Oliver.
E continuou apertando.

Worldbuilding Masterpost
Tumblr media
Hii thank you for checking out the world-building masterpost for my story Beyond Nowhere(sometimes also called just Spokstory)! Most of this stuff is a wip and will be updated in the future ^^
The Cube
Tumblr media
Every planet in the universe is a part of The Cube System, the cubes are metaphorical obviously, just for the sake of visualization of the possible paths between the planets that in reality are scattered all across the galaxy. Each “Cube” consists of 27 planets divided into 3 levels: Alpha, Beta and Gamma;  each level has 9 positions from which the planets take their names. The planets can connect through Breaches with their neighbors(so B5 could connect with B2 but not with B1 or B3).  Everyone is aware of this system.
Breaches usually appear naturally and co-occur with an aurora borealis, they are later turned into public paths and can even have highways going through them. They mostly open when planets are old enough yet it can happen at any point. They can also be enforced by technology, but it’sss kindaa dangerous. Obviously. So there’s The Watchman who is this demi-god like being that is supposed to "watch over” and make sure that everything goes nice and smoothly and that all planets are cool with each other. Each cube has it’s own Watchman, they are basically immortal but can be weakened or temporarily destroyed. The Watchman of the main plots Cube is called Howard, a Watchman from another Cube also appears at some point, hes called just The Other. Howard lives in his own pocket Delta Dimension. Watchmen are not supposed to be worshiped, Howard for example resents it, yet still loves attention and validation of his status. Still, he's not a “god” and the word itself does not exist/function in this universe.
The place between the Breaches is commonly called Nowhere. Normally a person crossing the breach wont even notice being there or will only catch a glimpse of it as its mostly a star-less void and it only takes few milliseconds. If one was to stay for too long there they would dematerialize.
The main plots planets are all part of the Beta Level. Beta5 is connected with Beta4 and been for around 200 years, they treat each other more like different continents than planets. Beta4 has also connected with Beta7 around of 20 years ago. Every resident of any of the Beta Level Planets can be called a Human, they can also have names for themselves.
Beta8 is not connected with any other planet.
The Alpha Level Planets are a setting for my other stories!
The Gamma Level Planets are Unknown as of now.
Tumblr media
Beta5
Tumblr media
MAP TBA
Beta5 is the main planet where most of the plot takes place. It’s very Earth like when it comes to the climate and has a single moon. Its represented by a pentagon, color blue and Blue Herons, its residents also used to be called the Herons. As the middle planet of The Cube it should be a desirable place for living or business, yet the inhabitants managed to remain mostly carefree so to say. Its a quite peaceful planet, its primary field of interest is medicine, yet they lack this huge engagement in scientific fields that’s so prominent on its neighbors. It also has no army or any sort of armed forces. It’s capitol is located in West Jefferson City, near its most advanced region on the northwest. The plots main city is called MorrowCIty.
Beta4
Tumblr media
MAP TBA
Beta5′s neighbor, although never call Beta4 like this in front of a person from Beta4. They hold a silent grudge against the other for, well, many reasons. Beta4 is represented by a rhombus, color green and Skinks. They are largely focused on science and making new outer planetary connections - they were the ones to make contact with Beta5  and Beta7 just recently. The lead company in this field is The Whittaker INC.
  Beta7
Tumblr media
MAP TBA
Beta7 is represented by a heptagon, color red, and Sunset Moths, it has two moons called Un and Deu and both are colonized, moreover it has an open travel route with one of the closest planets called Orion and its residents also live on Beta7 as companions of the Moths. Beta 7 is ruled by Reine Carmen, she has a government under her and is well-respected and loved by the people.  In contrary to its neighbors like Beta4 or Beta8, people of Beta7 decided to explore the space around them and colonized both of its moons, moreover visited a near planet and discovered the local fauna to be quite friendly and intelligent. They are very advanced when it comes to space travel and exploration thanks to it. The majority of the planets surface consists of sandy plains, dense forests or really high and steep mountains. The Moths mostly live in giant city like caves under the mountains or in cities carved in the side of a mountain. Their architecture is a mix of traditional stone carvings and high-tech.
Residents of Beta 7 are Raptor-Moths and their skin and hair colors can vary but are usually quite colorful like blue, green or red, they commonly have darker markings on their faces and moth like antennae on the foreheads and large ears. Their legs are digigrade and raptor like with claws, feathers and scales which also appear on their arms. They also have feathery tails with movement ability dependable on a person.
Beta8
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beta8 is represented by an octagon, color yellow and Greyhounds, with its residents most commonly calling themselves the Greyhounds. It surrounded by a single ring and an artificial force-field that’s supposed to stop meteorites from hitting the planet as its unfortunately situated on a path of an asteroid belt/debris disk. Part of its land on the southeast has been already destroyed and sunk into the ocean of magma, the rest is constantly covered in storm clouds and destroyed by hurricanes and acid rains, only some land on the north and on the Dyne Labs Island still has vegetation, plus the former most-fertile lands on the east are kept in this state artificially. The planet already had a low sunlight time, and the Greyhounds were used to prolonged amounts of darkness and this is how they managed to survive for so long, yet their time is running out.
Greyhounds are tall, usually around 6′6ft, and with slim or fit build. They have grey skin with varying undertones, some can have vitiligo (it usually causes the lack of runes) Runes are marks appearing as straight or breaking lines, sometimes with empty dots, most commonly nowadays just on the greyhounds faces, but can spread to arms near shoulders and thighs, the designs of their clothes come from those. The runes usually appear under eyes and chin, sometimes on the forehead and sometimes connecting with each other, they also don’t have to be symmetrical and can be the same on more than one person. Runes have no social meaning, they can be artificially “tattooed”, its especially popular when one acquires a prosthetic. Greyhounds eyes vary in color, with most common being blue and green, there is no pure red, pink, purple or pure black eyes tho. Some can have bright grey/almost white eyes or heterochromia(also sectoral heterochromia). The eyes also shine and the brightness depends on emotion or emotional state of a person(for example will start fading when ones hurt or depressed), there’s also a rare possibility of one having the ability to change the brightness of their eyes at will(Oscar can do that). Greyhounds blood is  blue, therefore their mouth and tongue are also blue and they blush in blue. Their hair is usually black, grey or white, dyeing hair is not very popular(they are like high school teachers and find it unprofessional, most greyhounds will look weird at one with dyed hair), the hair texture can be any. Hair length is usually kept quite short, as longer hair is unpractical for a work in the lab(even Tims hair is too long but hes a leader can can do whatever he wants, same goes for Simmone with her dyed hair)The ears can be short - pointy(with very little movement ability) or sideways(with no movement ability), medium long(with a lot of movement ability, also at will), and long(with slightly less movement ability than medium). Greyhounds can also in a way conduct electricity, its not harmful to them in basic amounts, but they do not have electric powers themselves.Weapons are mostly electricity-based and can be made out of electricity themselves (I just call them like laser knives lol) that also gives laser weapons or energy based guns,  a very popular piece of equipment most greyhounds use are their ear-pieces that project holograms, also their weapons or things like helmets can be holostructed so they don't have to carry them all the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the present time the power over the planet is split over to the Four Labs whose Leaders form the Council with Roswell as the primary Leader. Those Labs are as follows:
Tumblr media
EOS Lab - led by Timothy Roswell and Ryland Russel. They overlook everything happening on the planet, science and non-science based; but most importantly are in charge of creating the Breach to Beta5. Moreover, they overlook yet another invisible field around the planet that stops The Watchman from entering it. Roswell mostly resides in The Tower, a city like enormous building near the mountain range on the north. EOS Lab has many facilities around the planet, the biggest ones are located in a straight line going from north to south in the middle of the main continent, each of the labs is capable of creating a Breach. [yellow]
Tumblr media
North Lab - led by Simmone MacArthur, it’s primary objectives is sustaining the Force Field around the planet and research the weather. Simmone herself was reluctant towards Roswell at the start, but now they have a good relationship. [purple]
Tumblr media
Dyne Lab - led by Ria Hale and Kim Hale, a pair of twins. Dyne is the Switzerland of the Labs, they do a lot of humanitarian work and carry out research in many fields. Ria and Kim are also Roswells and Rylands old friends from their university days and they have maintained as friends till now. [blue]
Tumblr media
Valiant Lab - led by Everest Kelley and his son Jamie Kelley . The most conservative one, Everest used to be an important figure even before Roswell took over the Council, they also really don’t like each other but have to work together. Valiant Lab is responsible for the agriculture and sustaining the planet with food. [green]
The territories in red “belong” to The Rebels - Greyhounds that were against Roswell's treatment of the Watchman. They also wanted to overthrow the previous Council and now want to overthrow Roswell too, kinda like the french ig?
You can have any profession in any lab just that each of the labs will be more focused on certain aspects : eos - physics/quantum physics/engineering, very big Main Guys Complex lmao anything that could be used for breaking the laws of space and time in general, they also have some military air forces; dyne - humanitarian work, could also be sth with plants, earth or weather; valiant - plants/agriculture but also military, north - weather mostly.

TELEVISION ACADEMY HALL OF FAME
Tumblr media
“The First Annual Television Academy Hall of Fame Awards”
March 4, 1984 ~ NBC
Directed by Dwight Hemion
Written by Buzz Kohan
This award's mission is to recognize "persons who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, sciences or management of television, based upon either cumulative contributions and achievements or a singular contribution or achievement."
Tumblr media
The honorees received glass statuettes in the form of two ballet dancers created by sculptor and painter Pascal called “Discipline of Creation.” The trophies were tall and difficult to handle so they were not presented during the course of the ceremony itself.
Tumblr media
With that in mind, since 1988, inductees have received a crystal television screen atop a cast-bronze base designed by art director Romain Johnston.
Tumblr media
Being the first such telecast, the rating were poor. The special lost not only its time slot but the entire evening with just a 16 share and a 10 rating. ABC's TV remake of A Streetcar Named Desire won the night with a 39 share and a 23.1 rating.
Tumblr media
Just as Carol Burnett introduces Lucille Ball in this first ceremony, in 1985 the roles were reversed when Lucy introduced Burnett for the honor.
Tumblr media
Of the other participants in this initial outing, Steve Allen was honored in 1986, Eric Sevareid in 1987, Barbara Walters in 1989, Jean Stapleton in 2002, Bea Arthur in 2008, and Sherman Hemsley in 2012.
Although Lucie Arnaz is announced in the opening credits, she did not appear in the telecast due to a prior obligation.

Lucille Ball, hosted by Carol Burnett
Tumblr media
The segment begins with a clip of “Lucy Goes To the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16) which starts with Lucy announcing: “Ricky. This is it!”
Tumblr media
After the clip, Desi Arnaz Jr. enters and explains how his birth coincided with the birth of Little Ricky. Desi says that his sister Lucie couldn't attend because she is appearing on stage back East in The Guardsman. The show was produced at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse also starring Lucie's husband Laurence Luckinbill. It was hoped that the show would transfer to Broadway, but this did not happen.
Tumblr media
Desi Jr. introduces Carol Burnett.
Tumblr media
A cut-away to Lucille Ball in the audience reveals that she is holding back tears at her son's tribute. Gary Morton sits beside her. Carol tells of how Lucy came to the second night of Once Upon A Mattress on Broadway.
A video tribute tracks Lucy's childhood in Jamestown to her unlikely breakthrough television series “I Love Lucy.” Clips are from “The Audition” (Lucy as The Professor), “Lucy Does a Television Commercial” (“It's so tasty, too!”), “Hollywood at Last!” (at the Brown Derby), and “Job Switching” (“Speed it up!”).
Tumblr media
Lucy: “We all know we never do anything alone.”
Lucille Ball gets a standing ovation both walking to the podium and then again back to her seat. Cuts to the audience, show stars like Ann Jillian dabbing their eyes at Lucy's tearful acceptance speech.
Lucy Connection: Lucy and Carol Burnett were each others biggest fans. They alternately appeared on each others television shows, as well as numerous specials and awards shows.

Whit: Thank you, by the way…
Wren: For what?
Whit: For coming with me to the dance.
Wren: Oh. Well, thank you… for asking me.
Tumblr media
Whit: I mean it, Wren.
Wren: I… well so do I. I meant my thanks…
Whit: No, I mean… god I can’t get these words right.
Wren: What words?
Whit: I mean… I like you, Wren. Like, really like you. And I have for a long time. Probably since freshman year.
Wren: Oh.
Whit: You’re just… so bad ass.
Tumblr media
Wren: Me? Bad ass? I’m pretty sure I’m whatever the polar opposite of bad ass is.
Whit: No you’re totally bad ass. The way you deal with Sutton and all of her creepy little followers. You never once let them win. They have tried and tried for years to beat you down and bully you into leaving the school, but you stuck with it ‘til the end, and never let them have their way. That’s pretty fucking bad ass if you ask me!
Wren: I don’t know about all that. I stayed cause I liked IRA, and I had Josie and Grant and Claude to make things easy.
Whit: I think you deserve more credit than you’re giving yourself.
Wren: …
Whit: … I didn’t mean to scare you. I just felt like… I should be honest about how I feel, how you make me feel, before the year ends and we all go our own ways, ya know? I’ve held onto my words for too long.
Wren: I’m not scared. I’m glad you said them.
Whit: You are?
Wren: I’m bad at leaving my comfort zone and taking risks, which is probably why I gravitate to Josie and Grant, they’re the risk takers for me!
Tumblr media
*both laugh*
Wren: But since we’re saying things we should’ve said- I like you too.
Whit: Wait… wait, for real?
Tumblr media
Wren: *laughs* Yes, for real. I’ve always thought you were that guy who was too cool for me to befriend on the soccer team, so I just… crushed on you from afar.
Whit: Seriously!? Oh my god, I cannot believe we both went so long without saying anything.
Wren: That’s why I meant what I said when I said thank you for asking me. This was the senior formal of my dreams.
Whit: Mine too.

Note
Have you watch Easy Virtue (it's on Netflix and it's good)? Rumbelle that! (Honestly I could see it in my head? Can I make it myself???) Neal as John, Rumple as Mr. Whittaker, Cora as Mrs. whittaker, Belle as Larita, and Jefferson as Furber!
I haven’t seen it! I’ll check to see if it’s on Netflix here. But by the looks of it this is more of a Lacey adaptation and I just can’t write that. But I’ll see the movie for sure, thanks for the rec!

Our Favorite Female Characters
This week in our book chat we discussed our favorite female characters. I noticed as I was getting ready for our discussion how many of the books I’ve read have male protagonists and I thought my reading habits were pretty diverse. It just shows you how deeply embedded norms are in our culture and reminds us how we need to be constantly aware of the need to be diverse in our reading habits.
We did get to reminisce about some great female characters and share why we were so taken with them. The following are the characters we love:
Alma Whitaker, The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert
When I first thought of this topic the first character to come to mind was Alma Whittaker. What I love about Alma is how Elizabeth Gilbert allowed her to have sexual desires. Very few female characters, especially ones set in the 19th century, are portrayed as having any sexual needs and if they are plain or homely, as Alma was, then the possibility of them being portrayed as sexual beings is reduced to zero. Alma is portrayed as a strong, intelligent, independent woman with all the needs and desires a woman has.
Cathy Ames aka Kate Trask, East of Eden by John Steinbeck
The next character that came to mind is one I love to hate, Cathy Trask. I usually like more balanced characters, being that my belief is that no one is all good or all evil but a mix of the two, but Steinbeck makes Cathy sooooo evil from day one that you just can’t forget her. She has to be the evilest woman in fiction.
Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (etal The Millinneum Trilogy) by Stieg Larsson
And of course we had to mention Lisbeth Salander, (the original Girl in the title). The things Larsson does with gender in these books is refreshing. We get to know Lisbeth slowly throughout the trilogy, and begin to see and understand how she became the woman that she is. She is definitely a more balanced and realistic character, than Cathy Ames. These books are great in having both a great plot and great character development.
Aaliya Saleh, An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine
Aaliya is a 72 year old woman living a solitary life in Beirut. Divorced at 20 years old she has spent the past 52 years living alone, just her and her books. She translates these books into Arabic for her own pleasure, revealing her hobby to no one. Aaliya is a strong independent woman who knows what she enjoys and lives her life doing it
Lillian Boxfish, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney
Lillian (Inspired by the life and work of poet and ad woman Margaret Fishback) was  "the highest paid advertising women in America" Lillian is a survivor. She persisted in the days when being a woman meant being paid less because you didn't "have families to support". She’s a smart, strong and witty woman, who at the age of eighty-five is still full of life.
Janie Mae Crawford, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston
Janie is a woman that defies gender stereotypes and insists on her independence. She shows a curiosity and confidence and maturity that guide her through the novel to becoming a strong and proud woman.
Addie Moore, Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf
Addie Moore is a 70ish widow who decides to stop caring about what other people think and live her life doing what makes her happy. A strong, independent woman.
Ruth Jefferson, Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
Ruth is a strong black woman dealing with racism in her job as a labor and delivery nurse.
The Second Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
We never do get to know the second Mrs. de Winter’s name
Scout aka Jean Loise Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
The female characters from the following books;
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Any female characters from the following authors:
Barbara Kingsolver
Isabelle Allende
Erica Jong

Problematic Movies of the ’80s | Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
By Don Hall
Recently, on a night when I simply couldn’t sleep, I turned my iPad on to Netflix and searched for something to watch. You know, something to just play until my eyes finally weighed like lead and I crashed. I landed upon the 1998 Samuel L. Jackson vehicle The Negotiator. In addition to being a fun potboiler, I was reminded how goddamned good Kevin Spacey is as an actor. I realized that in this particular case, I was not bothered by his real life sexual proclivities and simply enjoyed the movie.
I’m frequently stuck in mental overload trying to weigh the artist’s real life from his or her art. Say what you will but Altas Shrugged has it’s merits. Ayn Rand doesn’t, and if you, like me, read the book before knowing anything about her awful politics, you might’ve been able to separate the two. I still love Woody Allen’s earlier films, although Manhattan now gives me a bit of the skeeves. I also recently got sucked into a conversation about the dark toxicity in play in the (apparently) no longer funny, twisted morality tale known as Caddyshack.
Then Kavanaugh referenced some classic comedies of the ’80s in his bizarre, angry, hyper-partisan defense. He claimed his yearbook was attempting to emulate “Animal House, Caddyshack and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Again, it got me thinking: are these touchstones of my (and his) youth to be discarded on a pile of old VHS copies to be set ablaze? Are they really that problematic? And wouldn’t it be fun (and maybe a little depressing) to rewatch them as much through the lens of 2018?
I set up some rules for myself: they had to be comedies, they had to be made in the ’80s (my coming of age) and they had to be movies I could recall loving at the time.
Here we go.
First up:
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Written by Cameron Crowe; directed by Amy Heckerling Released in 1982.
I was 16 years old when this hit the theaters. What I remember of this movie was that I liked it, thought it was funny and mostly loved the character of Brad (played by a young Judge Reinhold.) The Spicoli character, played with stoner perfection by Sean Penn loomed large, and the fact that I got to see Phoebe Cates’ tits was a big plus. I saw it in the theater only once but it left a good impression upon my teenage brain. It felt authentic in many ways to my own high school experience as it was unfolding.
Upon rewatching it to see how potentially problematic the thing was, here are some takeaways:
Problematic Moments & Themes
In the first two minutes of the film, we see a high school guy tape a sign on the back of another guy that says “I Am A Homo” and later, Spicoli, in a dream sequence as he has won the big surfing competition calls his competitors “Fags.”
There are only two black characters in this thing: Charles Jefferson (Forest Whittaker) and his brother (known only in the credits as “Jefferson’s Brother”) This film is overwhelmingly white.
In the first 20 minutes, Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a 15 year old mall worker, has sex in an abandoned baseball dugout with a 26-year-old dude. She subsequently has sex with Damone in her parents’ pool room, gets pregnant, has an abortion by herself and hides it all from her parents.
Does It Hold Up?
For me, yes.
While the film contains two instances of anti-gay language, there is no malice contained in the Spicoli comment. The first (the sign) is an example of simple assholery and is in no way central to the plot of characters in the intwining stories. No question that it gives pause (if it were the n-word, the discomfort would be worse, which says more about our acceptance of gay slurs than our apathy toward them) but the reality is that the movie taken as a whole, is not in the least homophobic.
The fact that there are no black characters is troubling, but there were and are high schools with few POC students. In the ’80s my high school had exactly four black students in the entire student body. This was a result more of geography (middle of nowhere, Kansas) than anything else. The fact is that the only high schools in America with more diverse populations are urban rather than suburban. Perhaps, because I am white and I went to a mostly all-white high school, it simply didn’t seem out of the ordinary in this case. Again, no racial animus is present in the film and Jefferson’s brother (unfortunate that the character was not given a name) is a stoner friend of Spicoli’s in several scenes.
If there is a difficult theme present, it is the pursuit of sex and the fact that most conversations in the film are about it. A 15-year-old girl having sex with a 26-year-old dude is troubling until you see that, in every case, it is the women in the film who are calling the shots, who have the most agency in the interactions. Stacy make decisions to have sex without coercion in every case. The boys are all fumbling idiots when it comes to the women and, in the case of the Faux Alpha Make that is Damone, his skill at sex with Stacy is so inept and premature that he seems flummoxed at the very idea of sex. Unlike, say, Sixteen Candles and its obvious date rape themes with the Geek, these are just American kids doing what we did in the ’80s — hanging out at the mall, trying to get laid (without having any concept what that might mean) and working shitty minimum wage jobs.
I understand that the idea of young people having sex makes you uncomfortable but the facts on the ground is that young people think about and get busy constantly. This isn’t new or unusual — high school is the pit of hormones, the very circle of hell when hair sprouts and boobs suddenly appear. Get over it.
Fast Times began as a Rolling Stone story by Cameron Crowe. He spent a year secretly embedded at Clairemont High School in San Diego, California under an assumed name (and in cooperation with the school’s administration) to gather stories for a non-fiction book with the same title. It feels like it, too. Unlike the spoofs of teens in high school and despite that fact that Nicholas Cage (credited as Nicholas Coppola in his first on-screen appearance) was the youngest actor on set at age 18, Fast Times isn’t a case of a bunch of adults making fun of the high school experience. It has an authenticity lacking in so many films about high school (in the ’80s or otherwise) that feels grounded in the real.
Watching this 36 years later cemented its charm and enduring quality. Like American Graffiti was a touchstone film about (some) high school kids in the ’50s, this is a pretty accurate snapshot of (some) kids in the ’80s. Additional plusses go to a woman director, a ton of the stars of the future in relatively unseen roles and the reminder that one could once get tickets to Van Halen for $15.
Overall
Scale of 1 to 10 1 = Classic 10 = Burn all VHS copies of it
Fast Times at Ridgemont High gets a 3.
