...so I just got to the end of Just Cause 4, and-
Look, see, the premise of the original Just Cause game was that you were an agent of "The Agency", an American intelligence agency, who was trained in destabilizing dictatorships that America wanted gone.
And over the course of the games, the Agency has been portrayed in worse and worse lights. As far as I can find they're basically portrayed as the good guys in the first game, in the second game they're just one of many foreign powers trying to take over Panau's oil fields (and Rico doesn't hand control over to them either), they enabled the dictatorship of the third game until recently (and are trying to gain influence over the nascent rebellion), and in the fourth game they are straight up the backers behind the main villain and also helped kill Rico's father before kidnapping him as a 17 year old and training him to be an agent.
Just Cause 4 ends with Rico, now knowing the Agency has been using him all his life, vowing to take down the Agency.
The thinly-veiled CIA equivalent.
Just Cause 5, if it ever happens, will be about destroying the CIA.
Will that game ever happen? Because that would be ballsy.

also i THINK i like that no matter what happens you can’t die in just cause 4? at least i haven’t died yet. the screen just gets really red and blurry and then rico gets up and regenerates his health. i thought at first maybe that was only for like, environmental whoopsies like falling from a great height or wingsuiting into a tree. but no it seems like you can’t actually die even in combat. kinda strange but also very convenient

honestly one of the motivating factors for me buying a steam deck was being able to play just cause 3 at a stable framerate and so far it's money well spent

have you ever played a game so good and beautifully put together with graphics and gameplay that you are then cursed with the knowledge and belief that you will probably never find another game that brings you the same level of joy and engagement?

New fretless bass plans...
So I had a fretless that was long scale, and I didn't get on with it as well as I liked, so I'm doing a short-scale.
I managed to nab this 2002 History KBJ short-scale J bass in candy apple red via Buyee, the site for shopping Japanese auction sites, for a very modest sum.
Tumblr media
I'm swapping out all the stock hardware and electronics, and I'll have my local luthier convert the neck to fretless, and give the fretboard edges a rolled feel at the same time.
The pickups are both neck width; I'm replacing them with Delano JC4/HE-M2 dual coil humbuckers.
The stock bridge is being swapped for a Kahler 2440, which lets me get tighter string spacing than standard.
Tuners are being replaced with Hipshot Ultralites plus a new three-string Hipshot string retainer.
Pots are going to be a blend / vol / tone setup, with a CTS 250k blend pot with center detent, and Jim Dunlop 250k Super Pots for volume and tone. Not sure what tone capacitor value I will use, but I might go for something higher rated than usual.
I'm swapping the stock chrome dome knobs for three Sadowsky-style black aluminum knobs with white line indicators.
Restringing it with GHS Balanced Nickels Short Scale - many people at TalkBass recommended these.
I also picked up this really nice Aguilar Octamizer octave pedal, which I can't wait to try out with it.

So I'm back to playing Just Cause 4, and one thing I've been enjoying in it is the talk radio show, Solis Hoy.
This takes the place of the propaganda broadcasts from Just Cause 3, though sadly lacking the entertainment value of being announced by a kidnapped David Tennant.
(Yeah, there's radio propaganda announcements every time you take over a town/military base in JC3, which are done by a kidnapped actor being forced to work for the region's dictator. It's voiced by David Tennant, who has confirmed he's just basically playing a version of himself.)
Anyway, this show is hosted by Diago and Santiago, and discusses news and the current events of the game, as well as some worldbuilding. After listening to it for a while, you see the pattern emerge: Diago is a full true-believer in the regime, parroting propaganda and fanboying over a drama series about the colonisation of Solis; while Santiago is more critical, calling out the ethics of local companies selling weapons to dictatorships overseas, talking about rumors of disappearances and secret facilities, and dismaying that the Black Hand, the Mercenary group that acts as Solis' military, now wears full-face masks to hide their identities.
What I've found most interesting is that you learn in that last discussion that Santiago is ex-Black Hand himself. While he's not yet gone so far as to declare support for the heroes' Army of Chaos, it's clear he's much more aware of the flaws of their nation, and I can't help but think it might be justified by what he says he did in the Black Hand: communications, "relaying messages from one conmander to another". Being privy to such information, in contrast to the public propaganda, is probably what makes him doubt what he's being told so much now.
I dunno, I thought it was a just a neat little subtle detail.

Carbon graphite rods
A graphite rod is produced from machine graphite or graphite compound. Graphite rod is utilized mainly for welding cast iron.  It is mostly for its excellent thermal shock resistance, heat resistance, high corrosion resistance, non-reactivity, and ability. Many types of graphite rods like Jc3, Jc4, superfine molded, and medium-grained.Coarse Grained Graphite.Higher Density. Pyrolytic Carbon Coated. Most often found as flakes or crystalline layers in metamorphic rocks such as marble, schists and gneisses. Graphite can be found in organic shale and coals. Graphite rods are used as electrodes in electrolysis because graphite's structure enables it to be an excellent conductor.

so if you don’t know anything about just cause 4 here’s the gist: it’s a third person shooter with the gimmick of using a grappling hook, parachute, and wingsuit for traversal. the grappling hook is primarily used for like, you know, grappling onto things and pulling yourself towards them. but there are also gadgets you can equip to your grappling hook, like “airlifts” which are balloons that can lift objects (and people but i’ll get back to that) in the air, and boosters, which when attached to an object propel it forward.
so last night after i unlocked the airlifts i played around with attaching them to enemies to lift them helplessly into the air (not very high but still) so i had less combatants to deal with at a time. well, i wanted to try something when i unlocked the boosters. i attached a couple airlifts to a guy and then attached a booster to him. he started flying away somewhat slowly which was funny but a little disappointing.
i got distracted for a moment fighting his buddies and when i looked up to find him to see how far he’d flown, dude was fucking GONE. like nowhere to be seen. other side of the fucking map by now probably. that shit fucking killed me
