One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar Winners
Moulin Rouge / Zsa Zsa Gabor as Jane Avril
Year: 1952
Designer: Marcel Vertès
So, this is the other Moulin Rouge! This one is a Toulouse-Lautrec biopic starring Jose Ferrer, and I confess that I didn't even know it existed until I started looking up the academy awards. It's quite the visual feast! I particularly liked this recreation of a dress worn by Jane Avril in one of Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous depictions of her. The poster doesn't show a lot of details of the dress, due largely to the pose and the angle; so the designer, Marcel Vertès, did a good job of interpreting it.
Her bonnet is particularly interesting. The high crown would have been very old-fashioned for the 1890s, and the sort of wooly texture of it is very unusual (which is to say, probably a Hollywood invention). The orange and black feathers, as well as the black tie under the chin, are very true to the original art.

Jane Avril, also known as L’Étrange (the Strange One), Jane La Folle (Crazy Jane) and La Mélinite (a type of explosive), legendary Moulin Rouge dancer and muse of Toulouse-Lautrec
“She was certainly known for her unusual style, which was described as "an orchid in a frenzy". The Belgian author Frantz Jourdain described her as "this exquisite creature, nervous and neurotic, the captivating flower of artistic corruption and of sickly grace"”

"Jane Avril" by Toulouse-Lautrec is an arresting image. The stylized representation of Avril, almost serpentine in form, was a departure from the conventional portraiture of the time. It was designed as a poster to promote Avril's performances, thus contributing to her growing fame.
Avril is depicted in mid-dance, her body twisting and turning in an expression of euphoric abandon. The dance, the cancan, was a form of entertainment that was often frowned upon by the conservative segments of society. Yet, Toulouse-Lautrec elevates it into high art. In doing so, he simultaneously celebrates Avril's individuality and challenges societal norms.
The backdrop of the artwork is sparsely detailed, which helps to draw focus towards Avril. The predominant use of green, a color often associated with passion and unpredictability, serves to accentuate Avril's image as an exotic, unconventional performer.
