James had never realized how soothing combing someone's hair was. But he'd been running a comb through Regulus's hair for the past half hour, and he could do it forever.

The funny thing was, he'd combed Lily's hair before, but it wasn't nearly as enjoyable. Partially because her hair had more tangles while Regulus's was like silk, so it was much easier to comb the younger boy's. But another part of James suspected that it was more the way Regulus relaxed against him, how he felt in James's lap, the contented little hums he'd make when James massaged his scalp or ran the comb down his neck.

James ran it through again, combing behind his ear and down to his nape. Regulus let out a low hum, leaning into James’s touch.

“I love you.” Regulus sighed. James’s hand jerked, pulling the comb through a little too quickly.

“Shit— sorry, I hope that didn’t hurt, but fuck, you what?” James asked, unsure if he could believe his hopeful ears.

“I-I…” Regulus stammered, and he sounded like he really hadn’t meant to say that aloud.

“I love you…?” Regulus repeated, and while it was more like a question this time, James understood why. His hand stilled for a moment, trying to calm his whirring thoughts. He felt Regulus tense under him, likely misinterpreting his silence.

“Regulus,” James began, placing a warm hand on the younger boy’s shoulder to keep him from running.

“I love you too.” He said, resuming combing through Regulus’s hair. “So fucking much.”

Regulus let out an almost disbelieving laugh.

“You do?”

“Yes, Reggie, yes, I can’t even begin to tell you how much.”

“I love you so fucking much, too, James.” Regulus murmured, smiling as he leaned back into James.

Oh, how he loved this man.
