One thing I love Strange World is that there's no "villain" in a sense. Like Encanto, and Turning Red, it's just about families working through their problems with a little danger and spectacle thrown in as a little bonus.
Tumblr media
The thing about not wanting to be like your parents only to unknowingly turn out just like them is actually crazy and I love how they did it in the film. Showing that it isn't too late for you to be better is a really cool concept to play with.

Character designs for Strange World.

It's been noted and joked how Strange World has followed this decade's trend of having generational trauma be the real villain.
However, it's important to note that it in many aspects goes in the opposite direction of Encanto and Turning Red.
The Madrigals unquestioningly following Alama's edicts, as well as Ming upholding the tradition of repressing everything, lead to burdens that they passed down.
In contrast, Searcher from a young age rejects Jaeger's toxic obsession with exploration. However, in not really coming to terms with it, his visceral rejection becomes every bit as toxic. Which not only leads to him having the outlook that "everything related to exploration is bad", instead of "exploration isn't my cup of tea", but trying to force that on Ethan.
Which speaks to the situation where a lot to people who have left really toxic/dangerous upbringings but, because they didn't actually deconstruct things, become just as unpleasant and toxic in the new space they come to.

My whole life, I worked so hard to be the exact opposite of my dad. And, uh, looks like I ended up just like him. I just wanted so badly to build you a legacy you could be proud of. But I might’ve got a little bit caught up in it.

Just took my nephew to see Strange World and it was a great movie. After so many mommy issues driven Disney movies it was fun to see a daddy issues driven one.
There is actually so much I could say on it.
Like how one of the key messages actually felt like it was aimed at the parents rather than the kids - don't let building a legacy for your kids actually get in the way of being there for your kids in the now because they are your real legacy. Alternatively: don't lose sight of the fact that your kid is just as much an individual as you are.
And the more general theme of: seek to understand and work With your ecosystem instead of destroying it because short term gains will only meet long term destruction.
Or how the whole "I'm not you dad" plotline would have been called queer coding in any other movie except in this one on of the main characters in that plot is literally already out to his family who loves him unconditionally.
Which brings me to the one scene that prompted me to make this post. Spoilers. Duh.
There is a scene maybe halfway to two thirds of the way through the movie where Ethan (our mixed race gay child protag) is talking to his long lost grandfather Jaeger (old self absorbed white man, kinda protag).
It's a catch me up on your life tell me who you are type convo so there's a pretty rapid fire "what do you do for fun, what do you like, WHO do you like?" Flurry of questions.
Ethan has a massive crush on this guy in his friend group and so when asked about romance gets all stuttery and flustered which makes Gramps push for details.
At this point my queer ass was white knuckling my seat because sure he's comfortably put to his family that has been there but Jaeger HASN'T been there he's been cut off from civilisation for 25 years and is the bad father of the movie if anyone was gonna be the homophobe it'd be him. If this had come out when I was nephews age This is where the grandad would call it a phase or get mad or play along to retain cool status and then go get mad at the parents. This would have been a dark moment of heart break.
But then with no hesitation Ethan starts gushing about this boy and how he hasn't been able to ask him out because he's so awkward around him, and the grandad's literal only response is to give him well intentioned but fucking awful advice as to how to ask this fella out (Which Ethan appreciates but also instantly calls out as an awful idea).
I unclenched purely from shock, because it went good.
It was just another light funny scene but also and this is crucial it wasn't a shoehorned in coming out moment.
There was no formal coming out, just used he/him pronouns when talking about his crush like super casual and realistic like in a scene whose actual function was to show that while Ethan thinks adventuring stuff is cool he isn't "like his grandad" (a major fear of his father's) he is instead a smart young man who is already starting to see his own path in life doesn't look anything like his father's or grandfathers.
Anyways I fully recommend everyone go see Disney's new movie about sustainable living and daddy issues just as a massive fuck you to Disney who has been making active decisions to give it less attention than recently renewed long held licenses and the 504th Christmas short from basically every franchise they own.

Had the pleasure of seeing Strange World on Wednesday when it released.
It’s a really fun movie, guys.
The Clades are a fun, complex family. The conflict comes from Jaeger and Searcher being on opposite ends of the spectrum, Jaeger being an explorer and Searcher being a farmer. What they both have in common is they both like being outside, being their own boss, and raising their son to be like them.
If someone asked me, I would say Ethan is the heart of the movie. He is the perfect middle ground between Jaeger and Searcher, wanting to explore like Jaeger but also wanting to care for the environment like Searcher. His card game, Primal Outpost, is a big metaphor for the movie’s message itself, which is living in harmony with nature.
Meridian and Callisto have their moments too, but the story is mostly focused on the three generations of Clade men and how they clash and how they need to understand each other before they can work together to save the world.
Splat surprised me, mostly in how he came to befriend Ethan and join the family for the rest of their journey. He was also very critical for overcoming certain obstacles during the journey and pointing Ethan to the truth.
The third act is full of twists you wouldn’t believe, and when you rewatch the movie you’ll notice how everything lines up.
Go see Strange World in theaters! I highly recommend it. We need a Disney sci-fi movie to succeed.

i am watching disney's strange world movie, and i just love that disney's animators are like "we're going to animate actual people that are gay, lesbian, trans, fat, native americans (yeah latinamerican included), black, old, asian, disabled, women and men without all the toxic stereotypes, and not just white skinny characters until Disney starts being the shithole it is and we squeeze the life out of the racist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, antisemitic and just assholes that are in charge".

The one and only time Searcher yells at Ethan he immediately realizes that he's wrong. Not just for the yelling in the moment but also for trying to force Ethan into a life he doesn't want.
Searcher's whole thing is that he's actively trying not to be Jaeger. Everything he does is thought-out beforehand, he thinks about this so hard. Everything he says and does is shaded with the idea that he can't be his father, that Jaeger was a horrible father. Searcher is so afraid that he's going to continue the cycle. He's also got lingering trauma from Jaeger leaving him, and choosing to explore instead of be a parent, so he's so afraid that the other people in his life will leave him too. And this also colors all of his actions.
So yeah, I feel that it's reasonable for Searcher to immediately go: "oh, I fucked up, I am just like my father and this is not okay. I've got to listen to my son and respect who he is as a person, which my father never did for me."
And apologize. Even when his first apology was interrupted, Searcher apologized again. I think that's great.

Jaeger didn’t deserve the reward he got.
Like, he up and left his 15 year old son, Searcher, on his own over a fucking disagreement (as well as wanting Searcher to be like him), and never sincerely apologized for it, not even an “I’m sorry”.
Something that Searcher did do with Ethan for the exact same reason! (And that actually felt genuine!)
Yet Jaeger gets rewarded for it, seeing what’s on the other side of the mountains like he always wanted without having to apologize for anything…
What the hell…

Woke: Macho grandpa being accepting right off the bat.
Bespoke: Grandpa offering hilariously out-of-date and borderline-problematic dating advice after the coming out.
