Several months after the invasion in New York, Leo wakes up surrounded by a nightmare he thought he had escaped -- and he's not alone. Delirious, scared, and confused, the only thing he wants is to find his way home.
But things are never that simple.
aka: a (reverse?) future crossover fic that features angst, hurt/comfort, my fucked up reimagining of the apocalypse timeline, and a lot of details that might become plot-relevant later (ahahaha... dw abt it)
this fic is very much a slow-burn. i have a lot planned, so i spend a lot of time weaving in details/foreshadowing that won't pay off for a while. as it stands, we're around 50,000 words in and i'm just about to get into the main plot. so.... yeah haha (really want to get the next chapter out this sunday/monday, but we shall see haha.)

update
i've been putting off writing this, but i can't exactly not, so... i'll try and make this brief.
in short: i've had an epiphany.
(tl;dr at bottom)
i've been writing/brainstorming this fic since november/december last year, and since then, my ideas and understandings of the show and it's characters have evolved. and with them, my plans and understandings for iwf.
i want to be clear: this is not me saying i'm done with iwf, or going on some long hiatus. in fact, it's more the opposite.
having graduated, with summer in full swing, and feeling more sure than ever about where i want to take this fic (as well as remaining fully invested in this fandom), i plan to do more writing than ever before B)
that said: something needs to change.
this fic has been, and continues to be, my baby (besides my ever-growing, yet rarely spoken of, tmnt iteration) for most of the time i've been active in this fandom.
i've long struggled with motivation for big writing projects, but i am resolved to keep with this one because i have a story worth telling. will it be worth reading? who's to say!! (i hope so /gen)
but, as you might've noticed, my more recent updates (especially around the end of arc I) were... bad. maybe not bad-bad, but still bad from a 'technical writing/story' perspective. i struggled a lot with them, and i think that really shows.
i've was trying to figure out why its come to be this way while pushing forward by forcing myself to write, but that didn't work. it wasn't until this week, tuesday, when realization struck me (while watching a video essay, lol).
it made me realize a big part of what was making me unhappy was something i already knew, an issue underlying the fic (and my writing style) as a whole.
with this in mind, i can't keep going forward in the way i had planned.
i'm not gonna go back and change arc I. while the problem is there, especially in the later chapters, i'm early enough on that i can turn things around and (hopefully) root out the problem(s) without any major changes to what i've written/set up so far.
but to do this, i need time.
i know i know i just took a 2-3 week long break, but to pull this off, i need time to prepare and rewrite. i'm halfway through revisions for the arc II outline, and i'll need to heavily revise/rewrite several chapters, plus write some new stuff (since i'm axing the next couple i had planned/written out... rip.)
if all goes well, it shouldn't take longer than two weeks. best case scenario, i get it done in one. we'll see.
until then, i humbly ask for your patience.
as a note:
i could go deep into my inspirations for this fic, where i wanted to go originally, what's changed since then, and especially what brought me to my realization (plus the specifics of said realization) but i said i would try to make this brief, and here we are, [insert amount of words] later.

(tl;dr -- i am not done writing iwf. however, i had a realization that led to me reevaluating my writing and determining that i need to rewrite/revise my arc II outline, and edit/revise/completely rewrite the next several chapters.
this means i am planning to take another week or so off (i am sosososo sorry) to iron everything out and get ahead.
this whole post was me trying to explain the reasoning behind this decision, with an underlying sense of desperate patheticism to match (/j /lh).)
to conclude, i want to say thank you so much for your support, silent or otherwise, from all who have read and (hopefully) enjoyed this fic thus far. i genuinely couldn't do it without you (yes, sun, this includes you /lh.)
especially to my frequent commenters, who i promise i do see and appreciate. you guys are the real mvps <3

not me writing a rexsoka post-apocalypse au on this fine thanksgiving day
this is a modern au, sort of, in that it’s set on earth, just in the future. it’s kind of a “what if america had a clone army” au. this takes place at the tail end of the second clone war, which is ending because most of the population has been wiped out. rex has just gotten news that ahsoka has been seriously injured but honorably discharged and is ready to come home.

He’d left at dawn and arrived at dusk. The VA hospital was a relic of a different world—a cleanly paved parking lot for cars that no longer existed, windows unbroken by stones, electric light streaming out. He slid a mask on over his nose and mouth, secured goggles over his eyes, threw a hood over his head. Years ago this might have made him look suspicious, but now these things were as necessary and common as shoes.
Inside there was no one at the front counter to greet him. Someone had left a sheaf of papers on which was handwritten, PICKING UP. Below it was a list of names and beside them, room numbers. Many were crossed out already. He flipped to the Ts.
SGT. TANO, AHSOKA, 5-C.
Caution tape spanned each of the three elevators. He took the stairs. He was certain he’d been here before though he couldn’t remember why. Clones had their own medical facilities. Once he reached the fifth floor, the silence was broken by quiet groaning and crying. Some lights were out and hadn’t been replaced; some were flickering. The central cluster of desks held computers that weren’t on, or maybe even functional. He kept looking for a nurse, doctor, orderly, anyone, but the halls were empty. He reached 5-C, a small room sectioned off with curtains. He peeked behind the first and saw a pale-skinned arm. He moved to the second, near the window, and gently pushed back the curtain. There she was. Only asleep, hopefully. When his men were seriously injured he used to tell them, It’s not bad, you’re fine, just walk it off, soldier. But this, even he had to admit, was bad.
Half of her face was wrapped up in gauze. Her right arm was in a cast, nestled in a sling. He couldn’t see below that, but under the blanket he could tell there was something around her leg. A cast, or some other contraption holding it all together. She was knocked out by something, hopefully pain pills of some kind. He stepped closer, until he was at her bedside looking down at her. He was not a man of many emotions but in that moment it all washed over him—her smile greeting him every day of summer; the terror he’d held inside him from the moment she left, worse than any he’d felt on the front lines. He wished he’d fought her harder, said the exact right thing she needed to hear to convince her no, this wasn’t worth it. Stay, please stay. But back then he thought the war was over. He thought she’d be put behind a desk somewhere, or get sent out to do humanitarian relief. Natural disaster cleanup. That was the life she wanted. Then again, no one got to live the life they wanted. Most people didn’t get to live it at all.
He reached up, gently dragged his knuckles down the uninjured side of her face. Soft brown skin. Warm. He remembered when her cheeks used to be so much rounder, all smiles and a little baby fat. Now she looked thin and sallow, like she hadn’t seen a full meal in years.
Suddenly she gripped his wrist and put him in a simple but startlingly effective armlock. Her eyes shot open. They were just as blue as they’d always been, but they were angry, and afraid, and he didn’t recognize anything behind them. What had she been through? Who was she now? With his free hand he tugged down his hood. Her gaze flicked upward. Her face softened. “Rex?”

De-Anonymisierung unseres (Kauf-) Verhaltens
Ich traf die Vorbereitungen eines Mannes, der damit rechnet, zu sterben. Ich räumte meine Bankkonten ab, steckte Bargeld in eine alte stählerne Munitionskiste, damit [meine Lebensgefährtin] Lindsay es finden und die Regierung es nicht beschlagnahmen konnte.

Allein diese Entscheidung hat unserem Ehrenmitglied Edward Snowden das Leben gerettet. Hätte er seinen Flug von Hawaii nach Tokio mit Kreditkarte bezahlt, so wäre er vor 9 Jahren bereits dort festgenommen worden. Das Gleiche gilt für den Flug von Tokio nach Hongkong, wo man ihm aufgelauert hätte, um seine Veröffentlichungen zu verhindern.
Neben vielen anderen "Vorsichtsmaßnahmen" in einer überwachten Welt beschreibt Edward Snowden in dem oben zitierten Buch immer wieder, wie wichtig das Bargeld für den anonymen Zahlungsverkehr ist. Auch wenn nicht Jede/r von uns so intensiv verfolgt wird, wie Edward Snowden im Juni 2013, alle unsere Zahlungen durch Überweisungen, Kreditkarten oder Handy-Transaktionen (wie z.B. Apple Pay) gehen durch SWIFT, das System für den "weltweiten" Zahlungsverkehr. (Na ja, inzwischen nicht mehr weltweit, denn viele Zahlungen dürfen nicht mehr über SWIFT abgewickelt werden.)
Anlässlich oder besser gleichzeitig zu den Diskussionen über den Ausschluss Russlands aus SWIFT kam heraus, dass die CIA ausländische Finanzdaten durch SWIFT analysiert. Sogar Versuche des US-Kongresses diese Spionage zu begrenzen oder Forderungen der EU-Staaten, die Daten von Swift nicht in die USA zu transferieren wurden einfach umgangen.
Das Problem sind aber nicht allein die USA, aber es ist dort am sichtbarsten. Also sagen wir, nicht nur die NSA weiß, was wir einkaufen.
Wer mit Karte oder Handy einkauft, der gibt seinen Aufenthaltsort preis.
Der Einkauf gibt weitere Informationen über den Lebensrhythmus.
Wann geht er oder sie und wo einkaufen?
Ist "man" sparsam ist oder verschwenderisch?

Europäische Zentralbank arbeitet am digitalen Euro
Und damit wird dieser in den nächsten Jahren kommen, denn einige kleine Karibikinseln haben bereits eine elektronische Währung parallel zum Bargeld eingeführt. In Nigeria, dem bevölkerungsreichsten Staat Afrikas, wurde eine digitale Zentralbankwährung, der E-Naira, bereits eingeführt. Jeder Händler muss Zahlungen in der neuen E-Naira akzeptieren und dafür theoretisch auch die Technik vorhalten, um Zahlungen über das Handy abwickeln zu können.
Jede/r in Nigeria, der an dem Verfahren teilnehmen will, muss sich natürlich unter Abgabe vieler persönlicher Daten registrieren. Die NIN, eine nationale Identifikationsnummer, erhält man nur gegen Abgabe aller 10 Fingerabdrücke. (Hmm, dann können wir also annehmen, dass sich nigerianische Flüchtlinge bei der Ankunft in Deutschland wie zu Hause fühlen. Sarkasmus Ende)
Edward Snowden warnt:
"Eine digitale Zentralbankwährung ist auch keine Übernahme des Konzepts der Kryptowährung auf staatlicher Ebene – zumindest nicht der Kryptowährung, wie sie so ziemlich jeder auf der Welt, der sie verwendet, derzeit versteht. Stattdessen ist eine digitale Zentralbankwährung eher eine Perversion der Kryptowährung […] – eine kryptofaschistische Währung, […] die […] ausdrücklich dazu bestimmt ist, ihren Nutzern das grundlegende Eigentum an ihrem Geld zu verweigern und den Staat als Vermittler jeder Transaktion einzusetzen.“

Genau das formulieren - allerdings mit viel blumigeren Worten - die Chefs der großen Banken, der IWF und auch Politiker. Deutschland ist im Vergleich zu den nordischen Staaten und auch im Vergleich zu USA und Großbritannien noch ein Hort des Bargelds. Mehr als die Hälfte der Bevölkerung möchte mit Bargeld bezahlen. Es werden uns aber immer mehr Hürden in den Weg gelegt. Der letzte Versuch war zu Beginn von Corona der Hinweis, dass Kartenzahlung hygienischer wäre - es wird nicht der letzte Versuch bleiben.

EU beschließt Bargeldobergrenze
"De-Cashing" ist kein Selbstläufer
Gegen die deutsche Mentalität mit dem Sparstrumpf unter dem Kopfkissen kommt die Idee der Abschaffung des Bargelds schwer an. Im Gegensatz zu unseren nordischen Nachbarn zahlen die Deutschen immer noch gern mit Bargeld. Trotzdem ist der Internationale Währungsfonds (IWF) nach einem Papier von 2017, „The Macroeconomics of De-Cashing“, in dem aufgeschrieben wurde, wie Regierungen das Bargeld beseitigen könnten, der Meinung:
„Die Behörden vieler Länder haben bereits erste Schritte unternommen, um Bargeldtransaktionen zu begrenzen. (...) Auch der Privatsektor scheint Bargeld am liebsten loswerden zu wollen.“
Bis es zur freiwilligen Selbstaufgabe kommt, empfiehlt das Papier
die schrittweisen Abschaffung großer Banknotenstückelungen,
die Festlegung von Obergrenzen für Bargeldtransaktionen und
die Meldung von Bargeldbewegungen über die Grenzen hinweg. (durch umfassende Kontrollen? auch im Schengenraum?)
Zur Begründung für die Maßnahmen werden die (hohen) Kosten für Bargeld angegeben, ohne diese Kosten (ca. 0,3% in DE) mit den Kosten digitaler Transaktionen zu vergleichen. Real ist das wieder einmal eine Verschiebung der Kosten auf den Endkunden für seine Kreditkarte, für seinen Internetanschluss, ... Die Obergrenze für Barzahlungen in der EU ist auf jeden Fall erst einmal auf 10.000€ beschränkt.
Weitere Probleme, die digitale Zahlungen erzeugen können beschreibt unser Ehrenmitglied Edward Snowden in "Der Kampf um das Bargeld" und "Bargeldverbot oder Helikoptergeld?". So nach seiner Erkenntnis "... Eine digitale Zentralbankwährung ist auch keine Übernahme des Konzepts der Kryptowährung auf staatlicher Ebene [...] Stattdessen ist eine digitale Zentralbankwährung eher eine Perversion der Kryptowährung [...] – eine kryptofaschistische Währung, [...] die [...] ausdrücklich dazu bestimmt ist, ihren Nutzern das grundlegende Eigentum an ihrem Geld zu verweigern und den Staat als Vermittler jeder Transaktion einzusetzen.“
In verschiedenen EU Staaten gab es in letzter Zeit sogar Maßnahmen, um den Abschaffungstendenzen entgegen zu wirken. In Italien wurde die Barzahlungsobergrenze auf 2.000 Euro verdoppelt und verschiedene andere Anti-Bargeld-Maßnahmen wurden beendet. Die Slowakei hat ein (allerdings schwaches) Recht auf Barzahlung in der Verfassung verankert, Norwegen hat die Annahme von Bargeld verpflichtend gemacht.
