Cale’s offseason has hardly started, yet his phone is already lighting up with a call from you to no doubt make summer plans before he heads back to Calgary to enjoy time with his family and to start his summer training.
It’s not unusual for his best friend to call him and the soft, giddy smile on his lips at just the sight of your name on his phone display is nothing new either, but when the call connects and words are practically spewing from your lips, he knows something must be wrong.
“Woah, woah, woah. Slow down. I can’t understand a word you’re saying.” Cale cuts you off, trying to figure out what’s going on.
“I said,” You emphasize, taking a deep breath to ensure you speak slower this time, “you got invited to Ryan’s wedding right? The one that’s in a few weeks in Montana?”
“Yeah, I did. What about it?”
“Well, uh, I kinda realized that showing up by myself would be lame right? Like this guy used to be insanely in love with me, but now he’s getting married and I’m, well, not even close to being in a relationship let alone a serious one.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that. You and Ryan are still friends so it won’t be awkward and I’ll be there so you won’t be bored at any point.” Cale replies, still confused as to what you’re getting at.
“We are still friends, but I have to prove that I’m doing just as well as he is, you know? So I have a plan. Well, more of a question before a plan.” You explain, feeling the nerves creep in as the moment about revealing what you’ve been thinking of asking Cale nears with each passing second.
“Okay…”
“What do you think about going as a fake couple? Like we’re dating but it’s obviously not real? Just to prove to Ryan that I’ve moved on and am doing better! He already knows we’re friends and I don’t think it’d be that hard for us to come up with a story and act all lovey dovey together for a few days.”
Cale is silent on the other line and you have a sick feeling in your stomach that you’ve really messed up. It was a stupid idea anyway. Why would he agree to it? He might be your best friend, but asking him to fake date you? It wasn’t that smart.
“So what’s our story?” Cale asks after a moment, trying to hide the smile growing on his lips that you can’t see anyway.
“Our story?”
“Yeah, if we’re going to make this convincing we have to be on the same page about how we met, the first time we said ‘I love you,’ some funny moments that have happened since we got together. Stuff like that.”
Before you can even begin to think about everything Cale just mentioned, your heart begins racing and a grin is on full display across your face.
“So you’re in?” The question is full of excitement and Cale can’t help but chuckle in response.
“Of course I’m in. I’d do anything for you Y/N. Plus, I think it would be fun to finally get back at Ryan for what he did to you.” Cale replies, trying desperately to ignore the butterflies erupting in his stomach. You squeal on the other end of the line and jump right into ironing out the details so there isn’t anything missed that can foil the plan.
Cale pays attention because he has to, but he knows he’s in trouble. He just agreed to be your fake boyfriend for a whole weekend. Cale’s already hiding how he really feels about you and he has a feeling getting a taste of what he wants so badly will only make him fall even harder.
Tumblr media
“Okay,” You say, clicking your seatbelt back into place as the plane begins its descent and turning your gaze to the blue eyed, rosy cheek boy next to you. “Remember our story?”
Cale playfully rolls his eyes at the question you’ve asked about a hundred times since you both boarded the short flight to Montana. “Yes, I do. We met in one of the business classes we were both taking together at the University of Denver when I was working towards finishing my degree in my free time. You had no idea I played hockey and after I asked for a pen that day in class, we started hanging out together. The rest is history.” He recites the story of how you actually met with a smile. “Our anniversary is April 29th, we’ve already met each other’s families and we couldn’t be any happier together.”
“Good job!”
“Most of our fake relationship is based off of how we really met so it isn’t that hard to remember, Y/N.” Cale teases, earning a small chuckle from you in response.
“I know and that will only make it more convincing, don’t you think? Being best friends and having history together already gives us an advantage. I just hope it works.”
“It will.” Cale murmurs, intertwining his fingers with yours and giving your hand a squeeze. You give him a sweet smile in return, before you begin talking about how excited you are about all the plans that are in place for the moment you land. He has to try and remember none of what happens between the two of you this weekend will be real, but that won’t stop him from taking it all in as if this was his real life even if just for a short amount of time.
Best friends, nothing more. Best friends, nothing more.
The words repeat in his head when the plane lands, as you both gather your luggage from baggage claim and throughout the entire cab ride to the resort where the wedding is being held. And just when Cale thinks the reminder is concrete and that nothing will sway him, he opens the door to your assigned hotel room and he stops breathing as he freezes in the threshold.
“Cale? What’s wrong?” You ask from behind him, unable to see around his broad shoulders into the luxurious room. He doesn’t say anything at first, just shuffles through the door and you’re about to tease him until you see the single king size bed in the middle of the room. “Oh.”
“Uh, there’s only one bed.” Cale states the obvious as if both of you aren’t already staring at the bed. “I swear I booked a room with two separate queens, but there must have been a mixup or something. I can check with the front desk to see if we can be moved and if not, I can just sleep on the floor. You can have the bed. That’s fine. It’ll work if-”
“Cale.” You say his name firmly, holding his wrist in an attempt to get him to look at you. He has flipped into rational thinking mode because of the issue at hand, but you know calming him down is the first step in telling him it’s all okay. “You will not be sleeping on the floor. I won’t allow it. That will kill your back and you know it.” “But-”
“No buts. We’re only here for two nights. Sleeping in the same bed won’t be the end of the world for us. How many times have we fallen asleep on the couch together? Or taken a pregame nap? This is no different. I promise.” Your words are soft and visibly make Cale relax. He knows you’re right, but a large part of him knows he won’t be able to handle being that close to you in such an intimate setting even if it’s under the guise of a fake relationship.
“You’re right.” Cale sighs, calming himself down and realizing the situation isn’t as bad as he thought it is. “We can do this.”
You offer him a sweet smile before walking further into the room and dropping your suitcase to the ground. “Do you want to explore the town today since we’re here a day early? I looked up the usual touristy things and places to eat just in case.” Cale looks at his watch and shrugs, feeling happiness surge through him at the thought of wandering through a new place with you.
“That sounds perfect. I’ve never been to Montana before so getting to spend a little time in the town would be really nice.” Cale doesn’t mention how spending all that extra time with you is really what he’s looking forward to most. He would go anywhere in the world if it meant being by your side.
“Then what are we waiting for?” You say excitedly, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the door. And if your heart races a little faster than usual when Cale chuckles and follows behind, no one has to know.
Tumblr media
Cale wasn’t kidding when he said he’s never been to Montana before, but he has to admit the little town not far from the resort is the cutest place he’s ever seen. Little storefronts line the streets and both locals and tourists take their time enjoying the cozy town. The scenery is gorgeous too, snow capped mountains extending high into the bright blue sky, but there’s nothing quite like the joy on clear display across your face at every new experience you and Cale do while exploring.
So far, you’ve stopped in various antique shops, a bookstore, two art galleries and took a tour of the local distillery. You haven’t stopped smiling at all and Cale can practically feel his heart swell every time you turn to him with nothing but excitement and adoration.
You’re walking down the busy street next to Cale, still trying to take in the entire scene when your stomach growls. The lighthearted laugh that you love so much slips past Cale’s lips and you can’t help but smile at the beautiful sound.
“Sorry,” You giggle. “I guess we should find somewhere to go for dinner, huh? I didn’t even realize how late it was.”
“Want to try that restaurant we passed before that looked good?” Cale suggests and you nod in agreement. As you both turn in the opposite direction to head back to the establishment, Cale takes a subtle leap of faith and intertwines his fingers with yours. He argues it’s just to get used to faking a relationship especially around other people, but when you smile up at him and squeeze his hand in response, he can’t help but think maybe, just maybe, you feel the same way about him.
That would be crazy though. Cale knows that.
He pushes those thoughts out of his head and focuses on dinner with you. The meal is full of laughter and recounting shared memories which fill both of your hearts to the brim. By the time you’ve both finished eating and had a few glasses of wine, the sun has fully set and the road is calmer than it was earlier.
When the waiter comes back with the check, you thank him before Cale insists on paying and you don’t object because you know he won’t budge. You try to stifle a yawn as he signs the receipt, but he somehow notices everything so it’s no surprise he asks the obvious question.
“Sleepy?” Cale chuckles, putting all his attention on you again. You feel your cheeks heating under his attentive, but soft gaze.
“A little. It’s been such a good day, just a little long.” You reply with honesty and Cale nods along in agreement.
“Well, we can’t have you falling asleep during the ceremony tomorrow so we should probably head back.”
“I guess so.” You smile at Cale before following closely behind to exit the restaurant. “Although having you there will already make the whole wedding more bearable. Thank you again for this.”
“It was an easy decision to come along with you. Plus, I can’t wait to see Ryan’s face tomorrow when he sees us together as a couple. Besides getting to spend time with you in this beautiful place, that will make the whole trip worth it.”
You giggle because the mental image is hilarious. Although the walk back to the resort isn’t long, you lean into Cale, who wraps his arm around you, and take in the serene moment. Any worries or anxieties about spending a whole day tomorrow fake dating your best friend have seemingly disappeared which you couldn’t be more grateful for. You’re determined to just enjoy the day with him and not let your feelings get tangled with whatever may happen to convince everyone at the wedding that you’re actually together.
It can’t be that hard.
But when you return back to the hotel room ready to watch a movie and call it a night, Cale seems nervous and jumpy again. It must still be the one bed situation even though you reassured him earlier that it’s fine.
“Um,” Cale starts, his voice quiet and shy. He meets your gaze for a few seconds before looking away. “Is it okay if I take the bathroom first?”
“Yeah, of course! Go ahead. I’ll just get changed real quick while you’re in there. My nighttime routine isn’t anything crazy anyway.” You chuckle, hoping to ease some of the obvious tension Cale seems to be experiencing. With a nod and a gentle smile, Cale disappears into the en suite bathroom which leaves you scourging through your suitcase for the pajamas you packed. “Where in the world are they?” You mutter to yourself before finding the set buried all the way at the bottom.
With a silent celebration, you quickly switch out your jeans for the comfy shorts and right as you’re pulling the shirt you’ve been wearing all day off, the bathroom door creaks open. Before he can catch a glimpse of anything, you face away from him and call out, “Cale! Just turn around a minute, please?”
He does as you ask, he wouldn’t ever overstep like that. But Cale’s breath was already stolen away from those brief, accidental seconds when he got to see the smooth expanse of your back, the gentle curve of your breast and your hair spilling over your shoulders.
His mind is going a million miles a minute, trying to remind him that that’s his best friend he’s thinking about this way. You’ve always been gorgeous and he’s known that since you met, but something about this moment is striking him in an entirely new way. Maybe it’s the small proximity of the hotel room. Maybe it’s that his feelings for you continue to get stronger and stronger with each passing minute.
Cale has no idea, but he’s in big trouble either way.
“Okay!” Your voice interrupts his thoughts, “I’m all good. You can turn back around.” Cale lets out a sigh when he sees your bright smile and how cozy you look in the matching blue pajama set. “All good?” You double check while trying not to make it obvious that you’re taking in just how adorable Cale looks right now.
“All good. Want me to pick the movie? And do you, uh, prefer a certain side of the bed?”
“Yes, pick the movie. Whatever you want! And nope, I’m not picky.” With that, you disappear into the bathroom for a few moments as Cale settles in. By the time you reemerge only a few minutes later, you see he picked a movie you’ve both watched a thousand times and claimed the right side of the bed. He looks so soft and cuddly which makes your heart skip a beat just at the sight of him.
Cale pats your side of the bed and gives you that sweet smile you adore so much. After slipping under the covers and plugging your phone in, he starts the movie. Despite how weird sharing a bed felt hours ago, now there’s nothing but comfort evident in this moment. You don’t know how much of the movie you actually watch before you start drifting off, head resting against Cale’s shoulder. But the last thing you remember before sleep takes over is Cale whispering a quiet “Goodnight, Y/N.”
Tumblr media
The warm sunlight shines through the hotel room curtains, pulling you out of the peaceful dream currently unfolding in your mind. You slowly blink your eyes open and get reacquainted with where you are, in Montana with Cale for the wedding, when you realize that you’re wrapped up in a strong embrace and your head is resting against your best friend’s chest.
And before you even have time to realize you’re both practically snuggled up together which somehow must’ve happened during the night, you notice Cale’s beautiful blue eyes are focused on you and there’s a lazy, but adorable smiling donning his lips. His hair is messy from sleep and his cheeks are already rosy. He looks like a dream.
A part of you thinks that you could get used to this, but that reality still seems so far away and unlikely to happen. So you might as well enjoy the moment when it’s here.
You match his grin, lean up a little to get a better view of him and start absentmindedly playing with the loose collar of the old t-shirt he’s wearing. He watches you, waiting with patience for you to say something.
“You drool in your sleep, Makar.”
“Hm, do I?” Cale laughs softly, rubbing a hand up and down your back while the other brushes some loose hair behind your ear. “Well, I guess I should make it up to you by letting you shower first, huh?”
“That would be the gentlemanly thing to do.”
“Bathroom’s all yours then. Just let me get in there at some point before we have to leave, please. I can’t show up with my hair looking like this.”
“Your bedhead is so cute though! I don’t think anyone would mind.” You tease him back, the happiest laugh escaping past your lips as you untangle yourself from the blankets to head towards the bathroom. The moment the door closes behind you and the sound of the shower running can be heard, Cale lets out a sigh while scrubbing his hands over his face.
That felt a little too real for Cale’s liking if he’s going to try and keep all his feelings under the guise of pretending. But he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy the banter and soft moment of waking up next to you.
As he listens to you sing a Taylor Swift song while getting ready, Cale goes through his usual routine before beginning to get dressed in his favorite suit. He happens to know it’s also your favorite suit of his so maybe, just maybe, he picked it for that reason too. He’s just fixing the navy blue tie you told him to wear so he’d match your dress when you step out of the bathroom and Cale has another moment where it feels like he can’t breathe.
You hadn’t told him anything about the dress minus its color prior to this very moment. The beautiful navy blue fabric hugs your body in all the right places and stops mid calf to showcase the pretty heels you picked to match. Cale also can’t help but notice the slit that shows off your left leg too. The straps are tied in bows at your shoulders and the dress is perfect, yet simple and you look absolutely stunning.
But Cale’s gaze catches on the glittering bracelet on your right arm. The one he gifted you as a graduation gift. The one you’ve told him you only wear for special occasions. It almost shocks Cale to his core that you’re wearing it now, but his heart couldn’t be happier.
“Wow. Y/N, you look gorgeous. So pretty.” Cale manages to get out, eyes still taking the sight of you. The bright smile that takes over your face rivals the sun which makes him practically melt on the spot. Cale knows then, more than ever, that he’s hopelessly in love with you.
“Thank you,” You say, voice shy and gentle. “You look really handsome yourself, Cale.” And he does. He’s wearing your favorite suit of his and looks incredible as always. Your heart swells just looking at him.
“Thanks,” He replies with a sweet smile before you close the space between the two of you to readjust his tie. That same surging emotion from last night rushes through his veins at the close proximity to you and when you pat his chest, signaling your work is done, he meets your gaze and takes a few seconds to remember every detail of this moment. “All ready to go?” Cale asks simply, trying to make sure he looks unaffected by what just happened.
“Mhm. Remember our story for when people ask because you know they will and we both know each other’s boundaries with PDA, so we’ll stick to what’s appropriate there, yeah?” Your best friend nods in response as he slips his fingers between yours again like it’s something that happens all the time.
“Sounds like a plan. We have to leave now so we aren’t late, sweetheart.” Cale ties the pet name out while guiding you towards the door and as your heart is racing, you can’t stop smiling knowing that today is going to be amazing with this incredible man by your side even if he’s only your fake boyfriend for the day.
And you aren’t wrong. The ceremony goes by without any hiccups. Cale keeps his hand in yours the whole time and presses the softest kisses to the side of your head throughout. You introduced Cale to a bunch of your friends as your boyfriend which only earned you more sweet smiles and gentle touches from the boy at your side. It felt like living in a blissful bubble where nothing could disrupt your fantasy even though you knew deep down this was all still pretend. There was no way Cale had real feelings for you.
The real test though is the reception. You can’t avoid Ryan forever and you have a feeling he’s going to make a point to come over and talk, but more importantly, ask about your date. Before the nerves can take over though, Cale puts all your worries away. As you both stand side by side in front of the seating chart in search of your names, he kisses your cheek and pulls you in closer to his side.
“How are you holding up?”
“Pretty good. There’s this awesome guy who is making the whole night a lot more fun than I thought it could’ve been.” You giggle, watching Cale’s cheeks brighten with the familiar pink color of blush.
“Really? Because I can’t get enough of the girl I’m here with either. Her smile is making it hard to breathe. And I’m glad she invited me along.” Cale responds with a smile on his lips and blue eyes full of nothing but adoration. His words pierce your heart in the most unexpected way because you know he means them. None of what he says is pretend to fit the show you’re both putting on.
But what could that possibly mean?
You don’t get a lot of time to think about it because Cale spots your names together under Table 8 and gives your hand a tiny squeeze before guiding you through the decorated ballroom. You take in all the beautiful sights and settle in next to Cale as you greet the other guests seated at your table. One of your college best friends is in the chair on your right which brings you even more comfort.
“Y/N!” She exclaims, giving you a hug while sporting a huge grin. “Last time we talked you didn’t mention that the handsome, but adorable professional hockey player who you always claimed to be your best friend is your boyfriend now!”
“Oh,” You chuckle, glancing at Cale who is in a conversation with one of the guests who are also sitting at your table. “We didn’t want to tell everyone just yet. But yeah, we’re together now and he’s the best.”
“I don’t know why you both waited all that time. It was obvious you two had feelings for each other the first time you met! I remember how you bursted into the campus coffeehouse with the happiest look on your face and I knew you met someone incredible.”
“It wasn’t that obvious to us for a while, I guess. But we’re making up for the lost time now.” You say softly, turning to look back at Cale as a million thoughts run through your head.
Since you met Cale, you’ve had feelings for him and for years, you never said anything because you couldn’t risk losing the best friendship you’ve ever had. But with your friend’s words echoing in your mind, you realize there is no time to waste. He didn’t even object when you asked him to be your fake boyfriend for the wedding. He has been noticeably more sweet and attentive the whole weekend and you’ve even noticed things he’s said or done that seem to be hinting at the fact he might want to be more than friends with you.
Ohmygod.
You’re in love with Cale and he most likely has feelings for you too.
Suddenly, nothing else matters except confessing the very thing you’ve tried to hide from him for years, but when you turn to ask Cale for a moment outside, the lights dim and the DJ’s voice booms through the speakers around the room.
“Everyone, please welcome the bride and groom!” Everyone stands and claps as the newlyweds enter the ballroom hand in hand with beaming smiles on their faces. The first dance song is introduced and even though you watch the couple dance together, you’re more focused on the boy next to you.
Cale’s arm is wrapped around you as a silent reminder he’s there because he probably thinks seeing your ex-boyfriend dance with his now wife at his wedding isn’t the greatest reminder that you’re single and here with a “fake” date. But you don’t even care about that right now. His touch grounds you and it’s what makes your mind up about telling Cale about how you feel.
Applause erupts again as the song finishes and almost drowns out the DJ’s next words. “The newlyweds would like to invite all couples to join them on the dance floor for this next dance.”
The familiar beginning notes of Taylor Swift’s “Lover” fill the air which makes you let out a little gasp in surprise. You love this song and Cale knows it. He can’t let this opportunity slip away from him, especially not with the plans he has.
“May I have this dance?” Cale asks softly, sporting an adorable smile while holding his hand out for you. A giggle slips past your lips as you nod and put your hand in his. He leads you out to an open spot on the crowded dance floor before pulling you into him. You wrap your arms around his neck as his hands settle on your hips, eliminating any space between your body and Cale’s.
For a moment, neither of you say anything. The music plays and you sing along under your breath all while never pulling your eyes away from his. How could he be so oblivious to the fact that he’s in love with you? All this time it could’ve been real, but it took a fake relationship for him to realize he can’t wait any longer to tell you how he feels even if it’s terrifying.
Little do either of you know, the same thought is going through both of your minds at the same exact time.
This is it.
“Y/N,” Cale starts when you say “Cale,” at the same time. He chuckles, trying to hide his nerves, and dips his head down before looking at you again as you both keep dancing. “You go first.”
“Okay,” You whisper, fumbling with Cale’s collar and keeping your gaze locked with his. It feels as if the rest of the ballroom falls away. There aren’t any other dancing couples or bright lights shining down. It’s just you and Cale and your favorite Taylor Swift song playing in the background. “I know this may seem like a surprise and if you don’t feel the same way, that’s okay. This is just something I can’t hide anymore.”
Cale’s breath is knocked out of his lungs at just those few sentences. Is this really happening? Is he about to get his girl after all this time?
“I love you, Cale. I love you with my whole entire heart and I’ve known since the day we met in class, but didn’t want to ruin the best friendship I’ve ever had. I realized though that it’s not your friendship that makes my life infinitely better, it’s you. And I know you came to this wedding as my fake boyfriend because I was nervous about seeing my stupid ex, which was beyond kind of you to do, but I want to leave here with you as my real boyfriend. I want to love you like I’ve dreamed of for years now.”
Time stops. Or at least Cale swears it does. He almost thinks this is all a dream except he knows it isn’t because of the tender look on your face. Nothing but love and admiration is on display across your beautiful features and he knows you’re preparing yourself for a potential reaction which is the farthest thing from the truth.
“I love you too, Y/N. Always have. Everyone around me has seen how insanely in love I am, but I couldn’t risk losing you either. You’re the most amazing person I know and it would make my heart so happy to be with you. I think we’ve proved this weekend that we can definitely make a real relationship work.” Cale replies honestly, his voice shaky. You laugh softly, your eyes filling up with tears for a moment.
This is real. He loves you too.
As you’re convincing yourself this is all real life, the bridge of the song begins and a beaming smile blossoms across Cale’s lips. He looks beautiful under the shimmery lights of the dance floor and he’s excluding pure happiness. His cheeks are rosy, blue eyes bright and you’ve never been so in love.
“Can I kiss you now?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”
Cale leans forward to close the small gap between the two of you with a gentle, but passionate kiss that says everything he’s been holding back for years. You melt into him, letting the overwhelming sensation of love wash over you. And as Cale pulls you impossibly closer to deepen the kiss, your heart feels as if it might explode.
This is all you’ve wanted for so long.
When you both slowly pull away, leaning your forehead against his, the rest of the crowd dissipates as the fast paced music picks up to get the party started. There’s nothing to do but bask in the moment and commit every detail to memory. Cale hasn’t stopped beaming yet and you don’t think you’ve ever been this happy before.
“I know everyone here already thinks we’re a couple, but just wait until the guys find out. I think they’ve been waiting for this just as long as I have been.”
“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” You chuckle, cheeks going pink from blush at the thought of Cale’s teammates hearing the news the two of you are now together. Cale is sure that he’s never seen anyone cuter in his whole entire life and now he gets to call you his.
But right now, he isn’t thinking about talking to Ryan like you’ve been dreading all day or returning home for the rest of the offseason. Cale is just focused on having the best time dancing the night away with the love of his life because he finally has you. And he won’t be letting you go anytime soon.

My entire life I’ve been forgotten. Being the closeted gay kid with only girl friends I didn’t get to go to the sleep overs and wasn’t invited to the parties cuz I was the quiet kid in the back. I had interests no one cared about when I talked to them or they would call me obsessed.
Adult life got easier. I made good friends but was still always felt like the plus one. Spending nights in country bars and other places where my friends met guys and I was their support cheering them on and protecting them but always alone after.
Guys treated me like shit when I would talk to them. Disrespectful, ghosting and putting me down to make themselves feel better.
Then I met you, and you did none of that. You listened to me, even with things you knew nothing about like when you saw my best friends had Pokémon types assigned to them in my phone and you went through all the types to pick yours out even though you knew nothing about Pokémon cuz of your religious parents.
Remember the map I made of all the meaningful places we had been to as a valentines present and I used all those bitmojis cuz that show you met me (you said my bitmoji on Snapchat was cute). Remember the home theatre we made at your apartment? Or when it snowed on campus and how pretty it was. Remember when we got our rescue do Brie?
Fixing my moms place after the contractors stole from her. Going to Del Rio and meeting your family. Your dad and mom both inviting me into their house to celebrate Christmas with them. Taking a secret Vegas vacation my sister and best friend payed for just so they could meet you. Remember when I would drive to Houston in summer with no ac just to have lunch with you during your internship? Remember all the amazing “alone” times we had? The things I could do that no one else could.
And so many more wonderful memories and moments.
You showed me love, affection, attention, and made me feel attractive for once in my life. You did so much good for me. You became my best friend and my boyfriend. And yea you messed up. A lot.
You cheated and I forgave you each time. I’d ask why and you wouldn’t give me anything but “i don’t know.” But those were a drop in the bucket compared to the good times. The laughs, the love.
I helped you through your mental illness, took you into the hospital and talked to your family when they thought I was just your roommate. Four times I did that. Never held it over your head but only wanted to help you. I moved from everyone I knew to be with you in North Carolina, to support and love you when you got into Duke. You said you wouldn’t get in but I knew you would. I never doubted.
At my sisters wedding you told my best friend you wanted to marry me. 5.5 years on my life all of the unfaltering love, dedication and sacrifice. All of it would have been more than worth it for a life time with you. That’s all I ever wanted.
A month later you told me you had cheated and didn’t think you could stop. You said it was something you needed to work on, on your own. With out me or anyone else. So we planned to break up. Maybe get back together after you grew. But we agreed I shouldn’t be in that pain anymore.
Then you got into a new relationship in less than 2 months. With a mutual friend that I was wary of your friendship with. And you spin the same story again. “I didn’t mean for it to happen. I don’t think the flirting and us texting till 4 am led to us getting together. You are just trying to make things fit in your narrative.” Even though you are supposed to be working on these issues on your own. That’s why we broke up right?
And after you guys got together and we were still trying to help me deal with the breakup the compassion and apologies changed to mean spirited comments and frustration. To the point of our friendship and all mutual friends with us had to be cut out. I lost all of them. Because you did wrong.
The worst part of this all though. You act like the last 5.5 years didn’t exist. You have no respect or compassion for what I did.
Because if you did I would get genuine apologies and answers for what you did. I wouldn’t have been forgotten about when you and your new boyfriend talked to our friends to make sure that they were ok with it and you hid it from me. You two apologized to them but not me. Neither of you are accepting or acknowledging that the flirting and shit led up to this. Or the lies you’ve told. Or possibly worse how you cared about others feelings but forgot about me.
And that’s my fault for believing that some measure of love you had for me would carry over. Or our friend and you to respect me and apologize for the months of flirting and pain you two caused me afterwards with the lies and backstabbing.
You will never understand what you did to me. To bring someone to such happiness and then utterly destroy them. To the point that I sit and wonder which parts of our relationship were real and which were fake.
I don’t know if I’ll ever stop caring and loving you. You became my best friend, and I lost both that and my boyfriend at once. And the loss of respect and care on your end… nothing I could have done would have prepared me for that.
Now I sit here every day, trying to move on. Trying to find a reason to keep going. With thoughts of ending my life bombarding me because if someone that I cared for and loved that much can so easily forget about me and erase me from his life like I was nothing. What am I doing here.
Anyway I’m going to therapy starting this week. I think it may help. I hope it does and I hope I find someone who will accept every good and bad part of me and will embrace them.
I don’t wish you ill will despite all of this. I want you to be happy and healthy.
But I know you will be haunted by us. Even if you act like you aren’t. Haunted by memories of what you threw away. For who you threw away. For the pain that you caused me.
And I hope I forget you. Because you have now tainted all the good times. I never thought that I would feel this way towards you. I know I never will forget you. But if there was an option to I would take it now.
Our relationship was to date my proudest accomplishment. But you are my greatest disappointment.

✨Previous Chapter✨
The morning of the wedding of Y/n Y/L/n and Anthony Bridgerton was bustling. The entire estate was pure chaos.
Y/n was getting her hair and makeup done while people rushed around her. She felt oddly at peace, she knew she would somehow find happiness with Anthony.
At the Bridgerton estate, Anthony and his brothers were having a private conversation. Benedict leaned back in his seat, "Anthony, are you nervous?"
Anthony had been pacing for the past hour, "What if she doesn't show up? What if she begs off at the last moment?"
Colin got up to cease his eldest brother's panic, "Brother, I have known her nearly my entire life, I know she will show up." He put his hands on Anthony's shoulders, "It will be fine."
Anthony nodded, "Of course, it'll be fine." He said it more to himself than his brothers.
Tumblr media
Anthony stood at the alter, anxiously awaiting his bride. As the guests rose from their seats, Y/n and her father walked in. Anthony decided that Y/n looked like an angel, truly the diamond of the season. Y/n's father gave her a soft smile before handing her off. Anthony took her hands in his, noticing her small smile, he smiled back, relaxing just a bit.
As soon as the priest announced that Anthony may kiss his bride, he cupped her cheek in his hand and kissed her softly. Y/n kissed back, then looked up at him, as if they were the only two people in the world.
Tumblr media
The wedding reception was breathtaking, Violet, Daphne and Y/n had worked hard to plan it perfectly.
Queen Charlotte was even in attendance, to witness her own vicarious victory, her diamond made a fine match.
After having made the rounds of greeting people and receiving congratulations, Y/n and Anthony found each other. Y/n held his hand and leaned her head on his shoulder, "What do you think?" She wanted his opinion, he was her husband and friend, after all.
Anthony glanced down at her, "It's perfect." He looked around, it was the perfect moment to slip away for a bit. He gently tugged her hand, "Viscountess Bridgerton, follow me."
Y/n giggled, "Viscount Bridgerton! Where are we going?"
Anthony wordlessly guided her to the garden, he could feel her eyes on him. He turned to his wife, "I wish for a moment alone with my wife, my friend. Is that to your liking?"
"I should like it just fine, a peaceful moment with my new husband," Y/n replied.
Anthony watched the sky, "Honestly, as glad as I am that you are my viscountess now, I was surprised you accepted my marriage proposal."
Y/n nodded, watching Anthony just be himself, "I have know you my entire life, you have always been kind, protective, charming, you are always up to verbally sparring with me. You are a good man and an even better friend. I am lucky to have that in a husband."
Anthony kissed her forehead, "Thank you, sweetheart."
Tumblr media
The carriage ride to Aubrey Hall felt longer than usual for Y/n. She had started sat across from Anthony, but he moved in next to her when he saw her shiver. Anthony had done his best to keep her warm in the cool summer evening. Perhaps he had done his job a little too well, he could hear and feel her even, calm breathing. Y/n had fallen asleep. Anthony couldn't blame her, it had been a long day, and she looked so peaceful.
Upon arrival at Aubrey Hall, Anthony swiftly carried Y/n up to their bedroom. He had different expectations of their wedding night, but it was only the first night of a month-long honeymoon.

I just want to put this out there this is a work of fiction. I in no way shape or form know how these players really act in really life. For those of you who may like Alex Kerfoot I am warning you for the sake of the series ONLY, I made Alex a jackass to fit the story line. I don't know how he really acts in person but I made him what I needed him to be for the story only. Please don't hate on me or the series if you don't agree with how he acts or talks within the series. Thank you

When you plan the perfect fairytale wedding, have the perfect ring, the perfect girl to walk down the aisle to you, you expect it to go perfectly smooth right? Well that's what Tyler Seguin thought the day he proposed to Tiffany. It had been the perfect beach proposal in Italy during the off season, they had been together for 2 years and she seemed to understand what it meant to be a hockey player's wife. Everything seemed like a fairytale… till last night when he found what he thought was the love of his life, fucking another man in their bed, in their house. Since then he had been hiding away in Jamie's basement, nursing a beer as he poured out his heart to his best friend over facetime.
"Ziggy, I know it hurts, and I'm truly sorry, but hiding in a basement till the season starts is not the answer." Arabella Kerfoot said with a dramatic sigh. Tyler took another sip of his beer and looked away from the camera. He knew she was right but his pride was too wounded to admit that.
"I don't know, Jamie's basement is pretty nice."
"It's May, Segs. Hockey starts in September. You gonna hide down there for over 4 months??" Ella gave him a hard look. Hanging his head the hockey forward sighed and shook his head. Running a hand through his black hair he looked back up and gave her the same look back.
"So what do you suggest, oh Great One?"
Bella laughed and flipped him off through the camera. "Wayne Gretzky is the Great One. But come spend the summer with me hiding away from the Media and just regroup. Take a breather." She said, taking a bite of her muffin as she leaned back into her chair. Tyler watched her closely, seeing if she was serious about it. He closed his eyes and ran his hand through his hair again before looking back up at the camera. "Come on, even Jamie thinks it's a good idea."
"You talked to Benn about it?" .
Bella smiled at the camera and took another bite of her muffin. "What else was I supposed to do?" She asked. "Of course I talked to Jamie about it and he agreed with me. You need to leave his basement. Like yesterday and get your ass up here to my place. Take the summer to shut out the world and regroup with me." She sighed and sat her muffin down, running a hand through her hair before leaning closer to the camera. "Tyler, what happened is shitty. What she did to you was something horrible, but if you stay there, if you let this haunt you, it's going to ruin you. The media will eat you alive. Plus if you went home… dude I love your family, but let's be honest, they won't let you have any peace trying to make sure you're okay after something like this."
He knew she was right. He honestly did. They both had shitty reputations with the media. They messed up one time in their careers and all the sudden they were uncontrollable wild childs that needed to be torn down. Tyler has done so much since his move to Texas to rebrand himself, make a better name and leave all the Boston shit behind him. He finished his beer and looked off into the distance of the darkened room. Ella stayed silent as he thought, as his mind went through all his thoughts. He sighed and picked at the sandwich Jamie had made him hours ago, but left untouched. He knew Ella was waiting for him to answer, but his mind was tired and his heart was too broken to give her one. He heard his best friend sigh, knowing she was trying hard to give them the space he needed but a push at the same time. There was a 6 year age gap between the two Forwards, Tyler taking on the role of big brother to a young girl he met in 2017 who had just won the Stanley Cup in her rookie year with Pittsburgh, and made a mistake in front of the media, earning her a nasty reputation, similar to the one he had when he played for Boston. Fast forward 4 years later and the two were more like siblings then their own siblings. Tyler stood by Ella in so many fights with her brother Alex, who played for Toronto, when he would fight her on what a disappointment her reputation bright to the family name. Ella also stood beside Tyler during many family events where his family would hound him on not having settled down yet and setting his new found reputation into stone. Over the past 4 years the two of them formed a bond, one that to the outside world looked more than platonic, but they could never see each as anything more than best friends and siblings.
Knowing that Ella was in his corner and would understand if he needed a moment to breathe and ponder her request to spend the summer in Pittsburgh with her, he finally answered her question. "Let me have the night, to just…. Let my mind shut down and figure out how to go about this. I'll call you in the morning and let you know what I'm going to do. Okay Bell?"
"Okay Ziggy. If I don't hear from you by 10am I'm calling Benn and making him put you on a plane though. Love you Bubs."
"Love you Bubs." Tyler said back with their signature sign off before hanging up the phone. The room was darker than he remembered from before Ella had called, so flipping on a light he sat down on one of the sofas in Jamie's basement. His phone lit up with text messages from Tiffany, ones he swiped away so he didn't have to see them. With a sigh he flipped his phone over and ignored it as it continued to buzz. Getting up he walked slowly up the staircase to the first floor into the kitchen. Jamie was there cooking some food, listening to a game from the playoffs from the TV in the corner.
"About time you showed your face. Ella finally got you to leave my dungeon of despair?" Jamie asked as he stirred the stuff in the pot. Tyler raised an eyebrow upon hearing the weird name for the basement and Jamie saw the look of confusion. Nodding his head and waving a hand in the air he answered the silent question. "That's what she called it when she called me this morning. Don't ask, it's Ella, that's enough said."
Both men have a soft chuckle at that and Jamie went back to stirring his food. Tyler walked to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water, chugging it down like his life depended on it. He hadn't drunk anything other than beer in the past 14 hours, and he didn't realize how thirsty he was till that moment. Throwing the empty water bottle in the small bin beside the sink, he leaned against the countertop and ran a hand through his thick hair.
"Ella wants me to come to Pittsburgh for the summer…. Instead of going home." He broke the silence after a bit of deep thinking. Jamie hummed in response, turning the stove off and removing his dish he had been stirring. Tyler watched him closely as he poured the stew into bowls. "You don't seem surprised." Jamie put the pot down and turned to face his best friend. He placed his arms over his chest and leaned against the table.
"Tyler, going home is only going to end in 1 of 2 ways. Your family going overboard on trying to keep you happy and giving you no time to grieve this, or being all up your ass about how shit went wrong and how this is going to look in you. They won't let you have any peace."
Tyler folded his arms and hung his head, giving a slight nod. "That's what Ella said too."
Jamie pushed off from the table and walked over to the forward and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Ella is right. And she's right in the fact you should go spend the summer with her. Lord knows that girl can't go home to her family. Not fair you two spend your summer with people that don't understand you. She's your best friend, so go and recover from this."
Tyler nodded his head and looked down at his bare feet. He knew they were right, there was nothing holding him here for the next few months. So pulling out his phone he shot a text to his one friend, asking if they could fly them on their small private plane to Pittsburgh in the morning. Then he shot a text to Ella that he knew she was probably already expecting.
*Pick me up at the airport in the morning*
∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆∆
Stepping off the private plane around 8am in Pittsburgh instead of getting ready for a bachelor party that night wasn't how Tyler saw his weekend going. But here he was getting off his friend's plane at the airport to meet up with Ella. Flipping his sunglasses up onto his hair he looked around for the tall brunette he called his best friend. Looking off to his right he saw her walking his way. Ella was one for fashion. She knew what looked good on her tall, thin but muscular frame. Clad in a white deep V neck shirt that hugged her curves, a pair of dark blue skinny jeans with black ankle boots. Orange tinted Aviators kept her eyes from the morning sun, her hair fell to her shoulder blades thick and wavy down her back.
"You definitely know how to make an entrance Ell-Bell." Tyler said as he took the last few steps off the private plane. Ella's bright laugh filled the air around them as she stopped in front of her best friend.
"Please Ziggy, you dress to impress all the time, you lady killer." She said waving her hand at his current outfit. He had on a dark green shirt that was so tight it was a second skin. Every muscle on display. Tan pants clinged to his thighs, dark brown Hey Dudes on his feet. His hair was styled in the blown away look, curls perfectly messy. Dark sunglasses now perched on top of his head. His wide, full white smile lit up the runway, reaching out he pulled his best friend into a hug. For the first time since he found his now ex-fiance with another man, he really smiled. Pulling away from the hug, Tyler grabbed his bags he had dropped at his feet and followed Ella to her car. Tossing his bags Into the back seat of her Jeep, he climbed into the passenger seat and turned to look at his best friend.
"Thank you Ella…. For helping me during this. For being my best friend."
The brunette smiled back at him and took his hand, giving it a squeeze. "You are welcome Tyler. I know this is hard, and shitty. What she did was unforgettable. You are more of a brother than my own flesh and blood and I will always stand in your corner." She let go of his hand and started up her jeep, the warm spring air floating through the windows as she pulled out of the airport parking lot. "And you know that whenever you want to talk about it, or vent, or just sit in silence and drink a beer together, you just have to ask."
Tyler watched the scenery go by out his window. Pittsburgh was a beautiful town, the people here passionate about their sports teams with flags and banners blowing in the light breeze. What had once been a small coal town was now a booming city with people from all over flocking to its doors to watch hockey and football and baseball, for jobs and major opportunities that showed up each day.
The trees were just starting to green up, the grass turning a pretty shade of green, early spring flowers blooming in the yards of the homes they drove past. Tyler was lost in thought as he watched the town go by, the wind blowing through his curls as he leaned his head back against the headrest. The sound of a phone ringing broke him from his thoughts. Looking over at his friend, he watched as she looked down at her phone, a scowl across her face as she quickly hit decline to the call.
"Is everything okay Ella?" Concern in his voice. The forward sighed as she came to a stop at a red light. She looked over at Tyler through her sunglasses and he knew right away she wasn't happy.
"Alex keeps calling." She finally spoke as she turned back to look at the road.
"What does he want?"
"It's Alex. The only reason he ever calls his baby sister is because he wants to yell at me for being the family disappointment." The light turned green and Ella started moving the Jeep again, flipping her turn signal on and going right, towards her house. "Every year my family goes on a vacation together and last year I just…. Hide away and not gone. And I don't plan on going this year and I'm sure he is calling to bitch me out for it among other things….. shit."
Tyler looked from his friend to the front windshield as he felt the jeep come to a stop. He looked up the driveway to Ella's house on the outside of town and saw a car parked right by the front door. Looking back at his friend he gave her a pissed off look.
"What is he doing here?" Tyler hissed as he looked back at the Subaru in the driveway. Ella remained quiet as she pulled up her driveway to park beside the car that was waiting for them. The Jeep hadn't even been turned off yet when Tyler was out of its doors and marching towards the man waiting. After the past weekend, the drama and pain he went through, he was now ready for a fight.
"What the hell do you want Alex?" His voice boomed as Tyler stopped in front of the tall dark haired player from Toronto. He watched as Alex Kerfoot scowled upon hearing his voice and turned to face him.
"I should have known my baby sister would have gone running the minute she found out you were no longer engaged." Alex sneered as he crossed his arms over his chest.
Ella stopped next to Tyler and matched her brother's posture. "The fuck is that supposed to mean?"
Alex laughed, shaking his head as if the answer was obvious. "With the reputation you both have among players it should be very clear what I'm saying. But I'll spell it out nevertheless." He pushed off his car and stopped inches from his sister. "You couldn't wait to have him back in your bed after you were the one that probably wrecked his engagement, Arabella. People like you two don't know how to be any different no matter how much your families try to put you on the right path."
Tyler grabbed Alex by the arm and yanked him away from Ella who had a look of horror across her face. Tyler pushed Alex up against his car and pinned him there with an arm across his chest.
"Watch your mouth Kerfoot. My engagement being called off has nothing to do with Ella. Your sister is my best friend and she offered me a place to stay while all that shit back in Texas gets worked out. Next time don't speak without the facts." He said through gritted teeth. Tyler stood a few inches taller than Alex, and he put his full height to his advantage. The two glared at each other for a moment before Ella spoke up.
"Why are you here Alex?"
Pushed against Tyler's arm, Alex broke free and fixed his jacket, giving the taller man one more glare before facing his sister. "You never come home anymore during the off season. Your place is at home, with family, keeping your rep clean during the summer instead of hiding out in Pittsburgh, giving the media more drama to feed off of. So I came to get you."
"Yeah that's not happening." Tyler chuckled sarcastically as he stepped closer to Ella for support. Alex cocked his head and waved a hand between the 3 of them to make a point. "And what place do you have here to speak Seguin?"
"Stop Alex!" Ella snapped as she pushed between the two men. She could see Tyler was holding back his anger, an anger he was famous for once having. And Alex knew how to push buttons, it's what gave him an edge on the ice. Tyler shook his head and took a step back, giving space between the three of them. He hated how Alex and her whole family treated her after one mistake. It was like watching his early years play out all over again.
"I am home Alex. Pittsburgh IS my home now. And I have house guests to care for. So I suggest you leave and let me go about my life here, with my friends and my team who are supporting me far more than my family has in the past few years." Tyler watched as Ella spoke, before she turned her back on her brother and walked back to her car to grab her purse from the back seat where she had left it. Digging out her house key she turned back to face Tyler and nodded her head towards the front door. Tyler nodded and turned back to face Alex, crossing his arms over his chest and tapped his chin up towards the Subaru behind him. He watched as Alex shook his head and grabbed the handle of the car door and yanked it open.
"I'll tell Mom that you already had plans for the summer. At least call her some though." Alex called out dryly before climbing into the car shutting the door behind him. Tyler glanced over at his friend and watched all kinds of emotions cross her face as her brother drove down her driveway and then down the road. Tyler watched her from the corner of his eye as the car disappeared down the road. He was fortunate enough to have a family that still supported him even after everything in Boston. Even after up until a year and half ago when he got serious with Tiffany he bounced around from girl to bar each weekend not caring if he got too drunk and ruin all he worked so hard to build. Even now, with everything that has happened in the past 48 hours with Tiffany, he knew his family understood to a point why he didn't come home. Why he wanted see space. Sure they would check in on him and maybe suggest coming to visit but they wouldn't show up at his door and chastise him for his choice.
"Don't bother even bringing your bags in." Ella's voice broke him from his thoughts. He turned to fully face her but Ella was already heading for her door.
"Excuse me? Care to explain??" He asked, not fully understanding that statement at all. He had a split second fear that maybe she was going to send him back to Texas after what just happened. But seeming to sense his underlying fear, she stopped at the door after she unlocked it and gave him one of her famous looks.
"We're not staying here." She said with a flip of her hair over her shoulder. "If we really want to disappear, then we are going to the cabin." Tyler had only seen her cabin once since she bought it. It was in a small fishing town at the top corner of Erie county and the lake. It sat by the water with only 2 other cabins in sight across the lake. It was remote and quiet. "The three of us need a break from the world. So to the cabin we go!" Ella singsonged as she marches through her front door, leaving Tyler to stand with a smirk on his face. He shook his head as he followed through the now open door. Only Sidney Crosby and himself knew she bought the cabin up north, as a way to really disappear when life got too much in the city.
"Wait." He stopped, replaying what she had said in his head. Three of them. Three people. So someone else was spending the summer with Ella? "Three people?" He called out but Ella had already disappeared upstairs to her room. "Ella, who else is spending the summer with us?!" He yelled up the steps as he raced up them two at a time. "I've had enough surprises in the past 48 hours to last a lifetime." He grumbled as he reached the top step. He found Ella packed 2 large suitcases of clothes, bathroom needs, shoes, and other random things. She smiled up at him and just gave him a wink. With a groan He knew he wasn't getting his answers till they reached that cabin on the lake.

more than my hometown - brendan brisson
word count: 1.0k words
note: it’s kinda short but… first thing i’ve written in a while!! yay! hoping that this gets me back into writing a bit🥲
Tumblr media
“Come with me” Brendan pleaded for the fifth time today. The past few years, you’d gotten used to Brendan moving away at the end of summer. First it was to Minnesota, then Chicago, and finally Michigan. However this year was different. He was going to Vegas, he had finally made it to the NHL and he had to move to his new home; away from California, away from the beaches, away from you.
“Brendan, you know I can’t” You sighed. Brendan had always had the same dream. He was going to grow up and play in the NHL. When he was younger, he wanted to play in Chicago, with some of his Dad’s clients. You can remember when you were kids, playing in his family’s pool, listening to your younger brothers scream at each other while Brendan talked on and on about his big dreams.
“I’m going to do it” Brendan said excitedly, flopping down onto the pool float next to you.
“I know. You’re going to go play in Chicago with Kane and Toews” You answer, licking your popsicle so that it doesn’t make a mess as it melts.
“No really, Y/n. I’m going to play in the NHL one day and you’re going to be there, front row, cheering me on” You laugh but nod along.
“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else” Brendan grinned, splashing some water up at you which made you squeal.
“Why can’t you? There’s nothing you’re doing here that you couldn’t in Vegas” His voice brings you back to the present, refocusing on his packed suitcase, still laying open on his bedroom floor.
“My family’s here” You say weakly, knowing it’s not a very strong argument.
“So is mine” He answers, as if you didn’t know that. “Jen would love a reason to come visit Vegas. Plus then both our moms can talk about ‘losing their oldest children’” Brendan rolls his eyes. Over the past few weeks, Kim had been running around getting everything ready for his move and Brendan, while grateful, had been complaining that she was being dramatic.
Your moms were best friends, they had been since they were in middle school and when they found out they were pregnant at the same time, they immediately knew their kids would be best friends as well.
“Aren’t they so cute?” Kim practically squealed, raising her eyebrows when you came down the stairs. Brendan was waiting for you at the bottom, clad in his tux that was usually for hockey games. Tonight however, it was for your prom.
When you and Brendan started dating, the summer before he left for his senior year at SSM, your parents were over the moon. Your moms were probably planning the wedding before the conversation was over.
“Come on you two, let’s get some pictures!” Your mom herded you and Brendan over near the door. Your brother and Jordan spent the entire time making fun of you both, mimicking your poses behind your moms so that they didn’t get caught.
“Look Bren, I just can’t go okay?” There hadn’t been much of a conversation between you two. Brendan had assumed that if you weren’t coming, nothing would change. That after doing long distance for years, you’d keep on doing it.
His years in Michigan were the easiest, you weren’t in school or working really so you were able to go visit him often. His friends even claimed that you were their fourth roommate because of how often you were there.
“Why? And don’t give me a dumb excuse, I want a real reason” He crosses his arms over his chest, waiting for your answer.
“I want to settle down, plant some roots and I only want that here, not anywhere else” It wasn’t that you expected Brendan to stay here, you honestly hadn’t even thought this far ahead. It seemed like him making it to the NHL was so far away, there wasn’t any point in thinking about it but it had creeped up on you and now here you were, days away from him leaving and you still hadn’t figured it all out.
“We can have that in Vegas!” Brendan exclaims and you sigh.
“I can’t leave. I don’t want to. Moving away is your thing, you’ve always wanted to get out of here and I know that, it’s just not the same for me, it never has been” Brendan’s always been on the move, never in one city for too long and he liked that.
“I thought that we would do this together” He said quietly, staring down at his suitcase and the scattered clothes surrounding it.
“It’s your big dream Bren, I don’t blame you for picking up and leaving” You step closer to him, taking one of his hands in yours. “Your dreams are finally coming true and I’m so happy for you babe”
“It’s not really my dream if you’re not there with me” You hated how sad he sounded. It was like his entire attitude towards moving to Vegas had shifted within a day.
“Brendan…” You sighed, reaching up to brush a few stray hairs away from his eyes.
“Do you not love me enough?” Brendan asks and your heart stops. “Is that it? You don’t want to move because you don’t think we’re going to last?”
“Brendan I love you more than a California sunset, more than a beer when you’re not 21 yet” You say softly, fiddling with the chain hanging around his neck. He chuckled lightly at the two things you mentioned; two things you had shared many times together. Brendan always snuck out two beers from his dad’s fridge, passing one to you and then grabbing your hand and running down to the stretch of beach behind his house. Countless nights on the beach, watching the sunset and talking about everything and anything, just enjoying each other’s company. So safe to say, it was a surprise that he would think any different. “I’m not the runaway kind, I can’t change that. I don’t want to leave this place, I don’t think I ever could”
“But you love me” His voice waivers.
“I do Bren, with all my heart” You assured him.
“Then why can’t you come with me?” He asks quietly.
“Because as much as I love you, I can’t love you more than my hometown”

Come Together
Back home in FL after a week apart--the kids and me in OH, you staying back to work--happy to be reunited.
We drove from Youngstown to Savannah on Saturday, 2 hours north of Jacksonville where our daughter had her soccer game on Sunday. You got a ride to Jacksonville from Orlando with one of her teammate's families.
I liked being together for our drive home after the game. We stopped at Waffle House for a late lunch/early dinner. The kids and I did a Mt Rushmore snake draft of the best moments of our trip, you acted as secretary. Being together in one car--the van--made it feel like we were 'home' earlier, starting our Sunday night planning. We planned our week in the front seat, updating the family Google calendar, getting ready for the stresses of a 'back to reality' week of work and school. We hit tons of traffic, but we were together.
You and I had each had a healthy week, even though we were apart physically, being together on this big picture plan of being healthy kept us honest and on track. I had previously never been this successful avoiding overeating visiting my family, you had never previously been this successful avoiding going off the rails with food when by yourself.
We have a positive vision for the future, we have events on the calendar we want to look and feel happy and healthy for. Working backwards, next year in May, we'll up be back in Youngstown for my younger niece's graduation. Next spring break, we'll be in Spain. Of course, there's the holidays at the end of the year. In November we have your friend's wedding at the Orlando resort. In October we may have a wedding in Cincinnati. This summer we need to lock in our plans to go away while the kids are at camp.
And now, the rest of March plus April and May, leading up to Memorial Day and the start of summer, the busy-ness and hecticness of school and work and soccer, this is our training and preparation for all that future fun. But we will have fun along the way, we have an interesting date night planned for this Saturday.
We are on the right track and we are happy.

Winter
I always hated winter. My mom hated winter. We get sick in the winter and are anemic so we’re always cold, and get the flu easily. And for when she was a live and what I do for a living, the amount of money you make drops in the winter. When I turned 9 my mother would go to the Philippines every winter. She was in real estate so her business was slow and she wanted to get out of the cold. She said her cough would go away as long as it was warm.
When I was little I used to always say that the only good thing about winter was skiing, and then when I turned 14 I would say the only good thing was snowboarding. There's ice skating, hot chocolate, Christmas, and snow tubing. We had a vacation home in the Poconos and utilized it for skiing trips.
Finally in 2017 I escaped winter moving to La in the thick of winter in January. Then after 3 winters in a row living in LA, I missed the seasons. I actually missed the cold, maybe a day with it. I was so tired of the day being beautiful everyday. Who would've thought, but the desert got to be too much. When I was living in LA I would hide out in "bourgeois pig", the darkest coffee shop in Hollywood. Just to escape all that light.
When I moved back to New York, I thought Oh brother winter is coming, and my first winter in New York was the Pandemic. So it was brutal. We atleast made money with the covid-relief while hospitality workers weren't able to work.
I remember in February 2020, right before the shutdown, I went to LA with sorority sisters and my ex, and I got to see everyone I had left in 2019, so my trip was exhausting. However, the amount we were working, the small apartments in Brooklyn, and just being super stuck in the city in the freezing cold.
I really wanted to leave and we organized a trip. Then when we got back, bam, the pandemic hit.
Everything in life really fell apart. It took a lot of energy to put it back together. The following winter February 2021 I went to Dominican Republic with friends. Then the following winter December 2021 I went to DR for a wedding, and it was a week long, but when I got back the winter deadness, depression, lack of money and lack of work really hit, stuck in my small apartment feeling the winter blues would happen and I just had to go to therapy.
I didn't have the money to leave the country or to flee to the west coast, but I had insurance that covered this so I talked through my winter blues. Which were actually decades and decades of blues. So I talked to her for a good 6 months and was like you know what, I never want to feel the winter blues like I did last time I'm going to leave for the whole winter.
Now, it wasn't the whole winter because that is really really difficult. I planned all summer to take this amazing trip. To LA North Hollywood --> Manila Philippines-->Siargao P.I-->Sydney Au -->layover in Hawaii--> LA ktown --> Palm Springs--> San Diego --> Home. December 24- February 15. 7 weeks. I really started buying tickets in June. It was enough time to plan a perfect trip and transition out of my old life into the new.
The best part is I stayed with people everywhere I went because I have family and close friends in these parts of the world. My acting friend who has a family, my brother, and entire mom's side of the family, plus doing adventures like surfing and swimming in Siargao, seeing a friend I knew since kindergarten in his new home in Sydney and getting to go to his amazing birthday party, and going to beaches like Manly Beach or Bondi Beach, (where when you go under water you feel like a marine biologist) and in ktown I stayed with my old roommate, where we felt like roommates again, and in Palm Springs I actually did a Bachelorette party for my friend, and saw cousins & An Aunt I haven't seen in forever which was really nice, and finally seeing my close friend who now lives in San Diego and my best friend who also lives there. So I was busy, not working!, and connecting, importantly enough I was connecting to myself and I got rid of those winter blues.
It wasn't easy, It was a reset, had to find a new job and that was a blessing, I was away from my boyfriend whom I missed terribly and he had a hard time in the winter, and I needed to travel to self-soothe because I didn't like where I was stuck in life. I wasn't happy with work, or my habits, or myself. Travel allowed me to just stop and just live, and the weeks go fast, but then you realize in 1 work day all the cool things you can accomplish.
Anyway this post isn't about my amazing winter in the Philippines. It's about the past winter that is just ending right now.
I changed my high stress, high paid, dead winter job and got a couple chill jobs. I finally moved out of Bushwick, a highly congested area with small apartments that are falling apart, even if they look modern, for our own apartment that's spacious in Queens. Dom and I think,  how did take us so long to move to Queens. This winter I quit drinking. Not the whole winter but I did it for 2 straight months and it did feel amazing. Your sugar intake does increase. I didn't like who I was and I also could not afford drinking in NYC anymore. I could not.
So I filled my time with yoga, kickboxing, aerial yoga, good dinners, shows, and learning languages. I would discover museums The Met, Picking up dog sits, like we did on Christmas. I love checking out galleries too. Another thing is this winter, this year, my boyfriend works a lot, and when he finally has days off and we finally get to spend time together; it’s quality time together. No stress, no running around, not a million people. just us and just us only.
When you're in your 30's and you have friends that are married who are starting their families. When you’re at a stage where you finally don’t have roommates, no kids, you don't even have a dog, so you get plants and a fish. Priorities shift. I like being home, I wana see my family or my boyfriend, you stop prioritizing your friends, and start prioritizing jobs you enjoy and focus on healthy hobbies like yoga. I wana read. I realized the beauty of New York in the winter is this. No lines, not many people, you can take a class on anything, try Groupon, you discover so many shows, eating out you can get in and out easy. This time I didn’t leave for 7 weeks just left for 1 week. San Diego, LA, and Phoenix. To be honest it was a great trip because I realized LA isn’t the vibe for me anymore. I really enjoyed Phoenix, Arizona. I want intimate nights at home, hiking, nature, good food, and good vibes. My 20’s are really over. My head and my heart tell me that.
I’m glad to know when you’re busy with the right stuff and in the right situation. Winter isn’t that bad. I also figured out my chronic sickness was because I hated my job. Life is way too short for that. The drinking was also from high stress. It really will come down to taking care of yourself and your needs. Then you can survive winter. You can probably survive anything.

Lists of Heartland episodes
I love lists and was thinking of creating a few different themed lists of Heartland episodes. First of all Heartland Weddings! but I can't remember them all so I was wondering if you could help me a bit. I of course remember witch episodes did Lou, Amy and Jack get married but in what episode did Lou's friend have her wedding in season 2? Or Tim and Jessica? Or Mallory season 10 for Mallory that much I remember also I know that Caleb Married Ashley in season 4 but I'm not sure of the episode.
I'm also curious to hear that what episodes of Heartland would you watch if you wanted the warm and cozy feeling I feel like almost the whole first season is good for that but what else?
Have you ever put together list of this kind for yourself?
I know that answering to a question like this can be time consuming so don't stress about this. Submitted by: Selda D. ___________________________
Sure thing! :) Here are all the wedding episodes: Season 2, Episode 12 - Divorce Horse Mackenzie and Ian's wedding Season 3, Episode 18 - In the Cards Lou and Peter's wedding Season 4, Episode 12 - Lost Song (a glimpse of their "first non-wedding-wedding" in season 3, episode 18 - In the Cards) Caleb and Ashley's wedding
Season 7, Episode 18 - Be Careful What You Wish For (wedding reception in season 8, episode 2 - The Big Red Wall) Jack and Lisa's wedding
Season 8, Episode 18 - Written in Stone Amy and Ty's wedding
Season 10, Episode 14 - Written in the Stars Mallory and Jake's wedding
Season 10, Episode 18 - Greater Expectations A glimpse of Caleb and Cassandra's wedding
Season 15, Episode 6 - Happy Ever After Tim and Jessica's wedding
/////
As for which episodes I'd watch to have a warm and cozy feeling, here's probably, let's say, five I would choose: Season 1, Episode 5 - Best Laid Plans It was the episode where I knew I definitely had fallen in love with the show, so I'd watch it partly for nostalgic purposes, but it's also pretty funny episode with the promotional video filming happening. Plus Lou's karaoke performance, Amy's teenage angst... Good stuff! Season 2, Episode 8 - Summer's End I love summer, so this is a perfect summer episode, especially during this time of the year. When I think about this episode it gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling, even though there's some angst in it as well. I think it's very nicely balanced when it comes to drama, comedy, romance. Season 7, Episode 14 - Things We Lost The plot isn't all rainbows and butterflies, but it's one of my favourite episodes, and seeing Jack and Lisa getting lost and then back together just always makes my heart glow a little, so for that reason, I'd choose this. Season 13, Episode 7 - The Art of Trust I'm surprising myself by picking this, but in a way, it is kind of a sweet episode. We have Amy and Spartan storyline, Jack and Lisa leave the house, we see Jane again... I could imagine myself watching the episode and going "that was a good one". Season 16, Episode 5 - Higher Ground Thinking back to this episode, I feel like it represents Heartland really well. It makes me feel warm to think about how the family helped the couple who stayed at the ranch. Rick's struggle when Lou is gone is also interesting to watch, Tim helping out that rancher brought out emotions in me and there's many happy endings despite the circumstances. It has a hopeful message. That's why I would choose this.
Overall, if I wanted to watch a whole season to feel all the emotions, I'd choose season 2.
/////
I've never made any kind of playlist for myself before. I tend to watch episodes in order (when they air) and then sometimes something here and there, for example, if I need to remember how something went (for fic purposes). But there's never been a clear playlist type of arrangement.
Everyone, feel free to leave "your playlists" in the comments or by submitting!

“Oh c’mon, you owe me this, Sweets!” Bucky was pleading, absolutely begging you as you continued to shovel cereal in your mouth. You had woken up just under an hour ago and Bucky was already picking your brains with this outrageous request.
“Owe you? Barnes, if anything you owe me for all the times I’ve pretended to be your girlfriend so that your terrible decision would leave our apartment in the morning.” You remind him, pointing your milky spoon at him as he rolls his eyes playfully.
“See, you’ve done it before so it won’t even be a problem!” He cheers and you can’t help but chuckle at the way he was very desperately trying to get you to agree to this plan.
“Why can’t you just ask one of the many girls in that little black book of yours?” There was a twinge of jealously in your voice, but you masked it well enough for Bucky to think you were just teasing him.
“I don’t have a little black book,” he grumbles, slumping over on the chair beside you as you move your bowl away from you to lean on your elbows.
“I’m askin’ you ‘cause I know we’ll have a good time no matter what,” he says, eyes meeting yours as you sigh.
“I don’t know, Buck, isn’t it...” you’re searching for the right word, “weird?”
He laughs, shaking his head, “we just have to pretend we’re datin’,” he clarifies and it feels like a kick to your gut because yeah, it would all just be pretend.
You shake your head, pushing away from the counter to drop your used bowl into the sink, “I don’t know, you’ll have to give me some time to think about it, okay?”
He sighs, nodding and standing up before he’s leaning down to give you a kiss on the cheek, “I understand, Sweets. Jus’ let me know, yeah?”
Bucky slips out of the apartment shortly after for work and you’re left mulling over the decision that he’s presented to you.
His best friend was getting married next and he and Bucky seemed to have made a long-running bet; Sam had bet that Bucky would still be single by the time he got married and well, Sam wasn’t wrong.
But this was a whole new territory, there’d have to be ground rules, a backstory that was air-tight, signals in-case something went wrong, and oh your anxiety was the one talking now.
You groaned when you fell back into bed, running your hands down your face as you pulled your bottom lip between your teeth as you realized that you were about to be late for work now too.
~
“I think you should totally do it!” Sage cheered in her true hopeless romantic fashion. You just laughed and playfully rolled your eyes as you finished wiping down the last table of the night.
“He’s my roommate, that’s...weird? Plus, it’s next week and I don’t have anyone to cover for me.” You shrugged as Sage shook her head, “now you do.”
Your heart flipped at her words. Sage was the personification of a bright summer day—warm, sweet, and always left you with a smile on your face.
“You really don’t have to, I’m sure there’s like a billion other girls he can ask.” You said as she hopped off the bar to grab you by your shoulders.
“And yet he asked you.” She said with raised eyebrows as you tugged your bottom lip between your teeth as you felt butterflies erupting wildly in your chest.
“I’ve seen Bucky. He’s hot to put it bluntly.” You both laughed, “and I see how you get around him, all giggly and happy.”
Her words hit you harder than you expected. You’d always known that Bucky was hot, literally anyone could admit that. But living with him let you into another part of him.
You saw him on his good days, when he got sick with a cold and acted like he was on his deathbed, drunk and then hungover, and the occasional sobbing mess as you both sang show tunes until you felt better.
“This won’t exactly help my crush, you know that? If anything it’ll make me fall deeper.” You say and Sage groans.
“He likes you!” She blurts, having to spell it out for your as you furrow your eyebrows and just shake your head, “there’s no way.”
The downside of living with Bucky meant that you also had to see the string of unbelievably and wildly attractive men and women he would bring home.
You were jealous, slightly, but also envious.
How he managed to have one night stands and then forget their names the next day was something so exceptionally Bucky that it always racked your brain.
“Listen,” she’s got you by the shoulders again, “just think about it, yeah? I’m not a matchmaker, but I’ve seen how you both look at each other and it’d be a shame if you didn’t end up at least fucking.”
You choked on your own breath at her words while she laughed.
The short walk back to your apartment was filled with nerves and questions of what if.
When you stuck your key into your rusted lock, turning it and shoving the door open, you found it empty.
Until you walked further in and heard the sound of the shower running. At least you didn’t have to talk to Bucky the second you stepped through the door.
You were jealous that he got the shower before you, though, so you opted to get changed into the baggiest pair of sweatpants and sweater you owned.
Both of which, ironically, belonged to Bucky.
They didn’t smell like him anymore, at least you didn’t think so. Maybe you were so nose-blind that you were just used to what Bucky smelled like.
You shook your thoughts of Bucky soon after, stepping into the kitchen to grab a beer out of the fridge.
“Moochin’ off of my beers now, huh?” You weren’t prepared to be met with a nearly naked Buck as you turned around and popped the tab.
You took a sip, eyes locked on his as you willed them not to wander down his naked torso. The naked torso that was still slightly wet from his shower, his metal prosthetic fusing to his broad shoulder as he swung to recalibrate it.
“It’s not mooching, it’s sharing,” you quip and he chuckles, disappearing into his room only to emerge in nothing but a pair of sweatpants that sit low on his hips.
It’s criminal, it really is, how much of an effect he has on you.
“So,” Bucky clears his throat, “did you, uhm, think ‘bout the uh, weddin’?”
You take a deep breath, letting your head fall before you’re looking back at him and even you don’t believe the words that fall from your lips.
    “Let’s do it.”
Bucky’s eyes go wide, shining brightly as he claps his hands together and jumps to wrap you in a bone crushing hug where your cheek is smushed against his right pec.
He smells clean, like bergamot, very similar to the Earl Grey tea’s you drink in the mornings mixed with something a little more oaky. You could never distinguish exactly what it was, but it always left you feeling warm.
“Are you serious?” He asks, still in disbelief as he finally loosens his arms until his hands are resting on your hips.
It never did help that Bucky was very...affectionate. Kisses to your cheeks, forehead, nose, sometimes the side of your mouth when you were both stumbling into bed.
The feeling of him against your or around you was both comforting and terrifying.
“I’m serious, but don’t make me change my mind,” you poked his chest gently as you slipped under his arm and around the counter to grab your beer and sit yourself on the couch.
Bucky mimicked your actions; grabbing a beer, popping the tab, and joining you beside the couch as it dipped beneath it’s weight.
“We need ground rules though.” You said, pulling out your phone and heading to the notes section of your applications.
Bucky nodded his head, “good idea, Sweets.”
The pet-name caused another flurry of goosebumps and butterflies that you willed down with another sip of beer—drowning the unwanted emotions.
Half an hour later and you had three short, but very important ground rules.
    1. Make it believable.
    2. PDA is necessary, but don’t go overboard
    3. It’s not real, so don’t you dare fall in love with me.
“Seems pretty fair,” Bucky smirks, finishing the last drop of his beer, “you think you’ll be able to resist falling in love with me though, Sweets?”
You snort, slightly out of nerves and slightly from the beer that’s gotten you loosened up.
“Do you think you’ll be able to stop yourself from falling in love with me?” You tease, joking around as Bucky’s tongue runs across his bottom lip as he lets out a hum.
“I’ll do my best, but,” he smirks, “no promises, Sweets.”
You groan, rolling your eyes, “you’re such a jerk.”
He shrugs his shoulders, chuckling before silence sets over the two of you again. It’s not uncomfortable, but you’re fiddling with the end of the sweater you’re wearing.
“So about rule number two,” you finally manage to break the silence, Bucky already looking at you.
“I just don’t want anything to be awkward,” you clear your throat. You aren’t really sure how to approach the topic.
“Why would it be awkward?” Bucky asks and you know he’s just egging you on. You sigh dramatically, dropping your hands into your lap.
“You know why,” you mumble, “our first kiss in front of everyone is gonna be our first kiss.”
Bucky slides closer to you, putting a warm hand on your bent knee as he cocks his head to the side, “it doesn’t have to be our first kiss.”
You’re shocked, breath hitching in your throat as you’re looking into Bucky’s eyes now. They’re warm, cool, and confident.
“We have a week of practice time, Sweets.” He purrs and you feel your heart kick against your ribs.
“You jus’ gotta lemme know what you wanna practice.” There’s a devilish smirk on his face before you’re swallowing thickly, “practice is good.”
Your voice is hoarse as Bucky chuckles, “practice is good. So wha’daya say? Should we practice?”
You don’t believe this is happening, that Bucky’s hands are now cradling your face as he’s pulling you into his lap and against his naked chest until...
His lips are slotting over yours, warm and soft and faintly tasting of beer as you relax into his touch.
First kisses are never supposed to be this good. They’re supposed to be awkward and messy; teeth and tongue clanging and clashing together.
They aren’t supposed to feel this natural, like you’ve kissed Bucky a million times before, but it does.
You can feel your body moulding against his, his hands now tightly gripping your hips and suddenly a moan slips from his mouth.
It causes a chain reaction, a domino effect where you’re tangling your fingers in his hair and tugging as he rocks your hips against his. You can feel him growing under you, the sweatpants doing little to conceal him and...
“This is so wrong,” you mumble against him, “then why does it feel so good?” Bucky retorts back breathily before you’re kissing him against with haste and need.
“This is good practice,” he mumbles, hands sliding up and down your body until they’re toying with the hem of your sweater, “and we do need all the practice we can get.” You reply and you can feel him smirk.
“Atta girl, Sweets,” he purrs, sliding his hands under your sweater finally and you’re shocked at how cold his left hand is.
“Practice does make perfect, remember?” He teases, leaning you backwards until he’s standing up with you wrapped around his body like a koala.
At this point, you don’t care about the friendship and if it’s ruined; you care about the way your panties are slick with your arousal and how Bucky seemed to tap into your praise kink incredibly quickly.
You fell onto his bed, door shutting as you were quickly engulfed in his scent. Bucky looked down on you like you were his prey, licking his lips before his eyes met yours.
“‘S’not easy watchin’ you walk ‘round in my clothes, y’know that?” He hums, taking a few steps closer as you can see the evident outline of his cock in the grey sweatpants.
You had to squeeze your legs together, but it only spurs Bucky on as he chuckles.
““S’bad enough I gotta use my hand on my cock when ‘m jerkin’ off, but hearin’ your moans as you’re usin’ that vibrator of yours.”
You moan, you actually moan at his words as he drops to his knees at the end of the bed, grabbing an ankle and tugging you down to his level.
“Knowin’ damn well I could make you cum harder and faster than it,” you let your head fall back as he rips your sweats and panties off of you, hiking your sweater up until you’re helping him rip if off your body.
He takes a moment, his cock twitching as he takes in your body, “a fuckin’ masterpiece, Sweets.”
You shudder, watching as he hikes your legs over his shoulders until his cool breath is fanning over your core. He’s barely touched you and you’re dripping, fucking soaked.
“What a pretty pussy,” he purrs, using metal fingers to spread your folds and tease you as you arch your back at the light touches. You’d always been more sensitive, a big reason as to why no one but your vibrator has ever been able to make you cum.
Something tells you that Bucky might.
“M’gonna take my sweet time devouring you, have you screamin’ all for me in my bed tonight,” he growls, nose brushing the hair that’s decorating your mound.
He says nothing further, tongue flat against you as you moan as let him eat you out like no one ever has.
His tongue lap around you, prodding at your entrance before focusing on your clit as he lets his fingers do most of the work. He starts with one, slowly teasing you until you’re begging.
“C’mon, Buck,” you whine, “add another.”
He chuckles against you, vibrations sending shocks of pleasure through you before he’s adding a second and curling them deep inside of you.
“That what my greedy girl wanted? To be stuffed full?” He taunts, a high-pitched whine running through you before you feel yourself teetering on the edge of your orgasm.
“Don’ worry, Sweets. I’ll make sure to stuff you full tonight,” he growls, but stops his fingers altogether.
You whine, thrash a little like a brat before he’s pinning your legs down.
“Don’t try to pull that with me, Sweets. You know ‘m stronger and not against punishin’ you.” You know it’s a warning, but you wish it was a promise instead.
“You’re cummin’ on my dick, waited too damn long and now I got you all to myself.” He stands up and drops his pants and you’re in awe. You always figure he was big, but he was big.
“Are you sure you’re gonna fit?” You squeak out, watching as he wraps his hand around himself to stroke him.
He reaches into his nightstand, grabbing a condom and some lube, “oh, we’ll make it fit, Sweets.”
“Now be a good girl and get on your hands and knees, yeah?” You’d never seen this side of Bucky, a dominant, rougher side as you moved into the position with no hesitations.
The condom wrapper falls to the floor, the pop of the lube makes you squirm in anticipation before the mattress is dipping under Bucky’s weight as you feel him behind you.
“Are you ready, Sweets?” He whispers in your ear, gently as he gently massages your shoulder.
You nod your head, “fuck me already, Barnes.” You egg, smirking before you’re letting out a soft gasp when you feel the head of his cock sliding thorugh your folds.
“Forgot you had a smart mouth,” he grunts, squeezing lube onto his cock, “we’ll see how well you can use it when you’re so full of me you can barely think.”
Bucky takes his time stretching you, but when he’s finally fully seated, you can safely say that you’ve never felt as full as you do with him.
“God, you’re so fuckin’ tight,” Bucky groans, “takin’ me so goddamn well too, Sweets. Look at’cha, so full with me.”
He snakes a hand around your belly, pressing on your lower abdomen, “absolutely full of me.”
You wiggle your ass, whining, “need it, Bucky.”
He chuckles deeply, “my cock feel that good already?”
His hips snap harshly before you can reply, his skin slapping against yours as he picks up his speed.
You can feel a hand wiggle between your shoulder blades, applying pressure until your face hits the soft sheets, “wan’ you to be smellin’ only me, Sweets. Gonna have you thinkin’ of all of me when I make you cum.”
His words send a shiver down your spine and your toes begin to curl at the way this angle makes it so he’s able to brush the spot deep inside of you that you can never seem to find yourself.
“That’s it, Sweets, be a good girl and cum for me,” he bends his body over yours, “‘n don’t be afraid to make a mess.”
It hits you harder than you thought, sucking the air from your lungs as you feel your legs shaking and a familiar wetness running down your thighs when you realize what’s happening.
“Holy fuck,” you hear Bucky groan, “didn’t know you could squirt, baby.”
His hips stuttering as you continue to grip him, aftershocks of your orgasm washing over you, “gonna make me cum, Sweets. God, yeah, gonna get you nice ‘n full.”
Bucky’s voice is an octave lower as his moan rumbles through his chest as he squeezes the flesh of your hips as he spills into the condom buried deep inside of you.
You’re both exhausted and fucked out entirely as Bucky falls beside you in bed, condom discarded soon after until you’re both trying to catch your breaths and recover from the best sex you’ve ever had.
“I know they say practice makes perfect,” Bucky breathes, turning his head to you, “but that was pretty damn near perfect already.”
You laugh, closing your eyes as you wipe under your eyes, mascara smudged but you don’t care.
“At least it won’t be awkward at the wedding now,” you say, chuckling nervously as Bucky smirks.
“Oh, that reminds me. There’s only one bed in the hotel room,” he winks and you playfully roll your eyes because of course there’s only one bed.
You just took a deep breath and hoped you’d be able to make it through the wedding without thinking of the many other ways Bucky could ruin you.
“For a fake boyfriend you sure gave me some real orgasms,” you quickly changed the topic as he shrugged, “I’ve lived with you for two years, I know what you like.”
“Plus, think of it as my way of sayin’ thanks for being my fake girlfriend so I don’t have to lose this bet.”
You could get on board with a fake relationship with real orgasms.

“You’re good at this, you know. Convincing me to do things that I know will end in disaster.” You gave Santi a pointed look as you took a sip of your beer. He laughed in a way that looked like it took him by surprise, which made your heart flutter. You knew this would either be the worst idea or the best idea he’d ever had.
“Oh come on, don’t be dramatic. I wouldn’t say my plans have ever ended in disaster if we’re both sitting here, alive enough to have a drink,” Santi defended, giving your arm a playful smack. You set your beer down on the sticky bar top in front of you and looked at him out of the corner of your eye.
“I guess I can concede to that,” you laughed, turning to face him fully. “So let me get this straight…” You made a face as if you were collecting all of the facts, making sure you were following what he was suggesting. “I need a date to a wedding next weekend, and your response is that we should, what, pretend to be dating for the summer?”
He shrugged. “You make it sound like some crazy scheme, but think about it. My buddy, Will, is getting married later this summer and I’ll need a date for that, plus think of all the other holidays or events people have during the summer that people bring dates to. Instead of dealing with the shit our friends and families would give us for not having our lives together, we can spend that time with someone sexy who doesn’t drive us crazy.” At that, it was your turn to laugh and you reached up to grab his forearm.
“Oh, Santi, you’re such a sweet-talker. How could I say no when you call me ‘someone sexy who doesn’t drive you crazy’?” He shot you a wink and you had to admit, it did make sense. It was likely a terrible idea that would inevitably blow up in your faces, but he did have a point and you could guarantee that he’d had worse ideas when you’d worked together in Colombia. If you were honest with yourself, you’d admit that you’d always been attracted to Santi and you got along well, even working well together in stressful situations. He really wasn’t wrong that it would be beneficial for both of you.
“Does that mean you’re in, querida?” You bit your lip and considered it some more. He eyed you expectantly as if he somehow knew you’d say yes. When you didn’t immediately respond, he added, “How about this: your cousin’s wedding can be a trial run. If it goes terribly, we call it all off and pretend it never happened. But if it goes well, which I’m sure it will, we keep up our fake relationship.”
“All right, deal.”
You managed to make it through the hour-long drive, checking in to the hotel, and the whole wedding ceremony before you started to freak out a bit. As you and the other guests mingled in the reception hall, waiting for the newlyweds to arrive, you finally saw your mother walking toward you. You’d managed to avoid her thus far, but once she’d set you in her sights, you knew you wouldn’t be getting out of a conversation.
“My mother’s on your six,” you whispered to Santi as you watched her approach over his shoulder. You clutched what was left of the brandy old-fashioned in your hand a little tighter as you tensed in preparation for whatever she was going to say. The glass was cold and you thought that maybe the condensation on the side would help keep you grounded. Your mother wasn’t exactly known for her tact and the last time you’d spoken with her, she’d made her disappointment in your decision to break up with your ex, Danny, abundantly clear.
“Breathe,” Santi whispered back, ducking his face close to your ear so you could hear him. “I’m right here, and I am not above fighting an elderly woman.” You rolled your eyes but his quip did help dissolve some of the tension – if he wasn’t nervous to meet this hurricane of a woman, you’d be fine.
“Sweetheart!” your mother called and you were shocked at how decidedly not shrill she sounded.
“Hi, Mom,” you answered. Santi turned around to face her, lightly placing his hand on your lower back. The soft, casual warmth of his touch anchored you to the moment, and you exhaled some of the tension. You tried not to think about how natural it felt to have his hand on you like that.
“You look beautiful, honey. I haven’t gotten to see you since Christmas, when you and Danny came by for dinner!” You winced and Santi pressed his fingertips into your back to remind you he was with you. At that moment, you were thankful that you’d brought someone who knew your tells. “And who is this with you?” She turned to look your date up and down, assessing him and undoubtedly comparing him to Danny in her mind.
“This is my boyfriend, Santiago,” you answered pleasantly, and to keep from getting snippy with her, you decided to simply ignore any comments you didn’t feel like addressing.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Santiago.” She reached out her hand for a handshake and he shook it gently.
“A pleasure to meet you as well. I see now where your daughter gets her good looks!” You flushed and looked over to see your mother’s reaction. When Santi took his other hand off of your lower back and clasped it over hers, she let out a surprised laugh.
“What a charmer!” she giggled, placing her other hand on his shoulder. “Where did she manage to find you?” Santi wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you into him, protectively.
“We actually worked together in Colombia a few years back, but she wouldn’t give me the time of day. Luckily, when I moved back to the States, she was single and had lowered her standards enough to be seen with me.” He laughed conspiratorially and pressed a soft kiss to your cheek as your mother grinned.
“Thank goodness for that!” she giggled, and it took everything in you not to roll your eyes. “I’m sure she knows she’s one lucky lady.”
“That I do,” you responded, leaning your head onto Santi’s shoulder. His thumb lightly rubbed at your side and you could’ve melted from the warmth radiating from his hand rested on your hip.
“Well, as much as I’d love to stay and chat with your handsome new beau, I really should find out where your father’s wandered off to.”
You gave her a smile and before you could answer, Santi replied, “It was lovely to meet you, and I’m sure we’ll see you around.” Once she turned and walked away, you sighed and looked at Santi. Damn, you were impressed. Your mother had been surprisingly pleasant with him. You weren’t sure what you had been so nervous about – he was incredibly charming when he wanted to be.
“That could’ve gone worse,” you conceded. Santi laughed and cupped your face in his hands.
“Relax, hermosa. How could she not love me?” You rolled your eyes and Santi pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead. He grabbed the empty glass from your hand and nodded toward the bar. “Let me get you another drink.” A genuine smile spread across your face as you watched him walk away and you couldn’t help as your eyes slid down to check out the way his ass looked in his dress pants. Did he have to look so damn delectable?
Later that night, you had your arms looped around Santi’s neck and his hands rested on your hips as you swayed to some cheesy romantic slow jam from the 90s. You’d had a few drinks and were feeling good – much better than when the evening began. Your mother hadn’t said another word about Danny and actually seemed to like Santi, and spending time with him like this had just felt natural. While the casual touches were a bit more than you were used to with him, they didn’t feel forced, and you were reminded why the two of you had been so close in Colombia. No matter what the situation was, you felt comfortable when he was around, allowing you to fully be yourself without worrying about any sort of judgment. Usually, when spending time with someone as downright gorgeous as Santi was, you had a tendency to overthink everything. With Santi though, that wasn’t present.
“Are you having a good time, querida?” Santi leaned in to whisper in your ear and a shiver ran down your spine at the way his breath tickled your skin.
“I am. Are you?” You reached up to let your fingernails lightly scratch the back of his head, loving the soft feel of his curls under your fingertips. His eyelids seemed to grow heavy at your touch and he swallowed roughly.
“Very much so.” His lips brushed against your cheek as he spoke and you pressed your thighs together at the arousal that it sparked.
“You can touch me, you know. Any boyfriend of mine would surely have his hands on my ass by now.” Santi turned his head so your lips were just barely touching and you could feel, rather than see, his smirk.
“I didn’t want to presume.” His smirk spread to your lips as you felt his hands dip lower to rest on your ass. He pulled you closer to him and with the way he pressed into your hip, you could feel him beginning to harden. The liquor mixed with lust in your bloodstream to send a warmth throughout your body, and your lips hovered just over his as you felt the gentle pulse of desire between your thighs.
“Come upstairs with me?” you asked against his lips and in response, he attached his mouth firmly to yours. He groaned into the kiss and your hands moved down to his biceps. Lightly pushing him away, you couldn’t help the broad smile that spread across your lips. Santi pressed his hand to your lower back and led you off of the dancefloor, and while you were thankful in that moment that you’d gotten a room in the same hotel that held the reception, you would’ve let him lead you anywhere.
You’d barely made it into the elevator before Santi was backing you into the wall behind you. He tucked a stray piece of hair behind your ear and kissed you deeply, his hands holding you tight against him. The warmth of the whiskey he’d drank flooded your senses as his tongue explored your mouth. Your hands skated over the broad expanse of his shoulders, and your cunt clenched around nothing as you felt the tension move through his muscles when his fingers kneaded the soft globes of your ass. As you ground your hips against his, his lips moved to your neck, you tightly grabbed on to his curls, and the world around you fell away.
The two of you stumbled your way to your room and as soon as you shut the door, Santi’s hands were traveling up your bare thighs under your dress.
“Santi, please,” you whined as his fingers danced over your damp cotton panties and he left desperate kisses along the column of your throat. Everywhere he touched you simultaneously felt like too much and nowhere near enough.
“Please what, querida? Tell me what you want.” His voice was so low you felt the vibration of it rumble across your skin. Every swipe of his fingers felt electric and you were desperate to feel him where you needed him the most.
“Touch me, Santi. Please. I want to feel your fingers.” He groaned and pressed you firmly into the wall behind you. He pulled your panties to the side so he could feel how wet you were for him, swiping slowly through your folds. The feeling of his finger pressing into your needy pussy had you gasping at the sudden and welcome intrusion.
“So wet already,” he purred against your neck, “Is all of this for me?” As he slipped another digit into you, he grabbed the back of your head to press his lips strongly against yours again. You moaned into the kiss as his fingers curled to prod that spot inside you that made you see stars, and he greedily swallowed your wanton noises. His tongue found its way into your mouth, and the kiss became frantic as he brought you closer to the edge. As Santi pumped his fingers into you, caressing that spot inside you each time, you began to thrust your hips into his hand. You wondered how it was possible that he knew your body so well, and you barely had time to think before he was coaxing an orgasm from you.
“Fuck, Santi,” you breathed, your body utterly pliant beneath his touch. He pulled his fingers out from under your dress and your breath caught in your throat as he slipped them past his lips to lick them clean. You grabbed him by the lapels and pulled his mouth roughly against yours. You could taste yourself on his lips and it stoked the fire of need within you. He clearly felt the same as he all but dragged you over toward the bed. As his knees hit the mattress behind him, you pushed him backwards so he was sat on the edge of the bed. He quickly shed his jacket and you began unbuttoning his shirt. Your mouth was on his and the kisses grew more desperate with each piece of clothing either of you removed. Your dress quickly joined his jacket and shirt on the floor, and you slid your panties over your hips and you dropped to your knees in front of him. Santi lifted his hips to help you slide his pants and boxers off, and you couldn’t help but lick your lips in anticipation as his cock sprang free.
“So beautiful on your knees for me.” He looked down at you with dark eyes and cupped the side of your face in his hand. As he caressed your cheek with the callused pad of his thumb, you wasted no time reaching out to wrap your hand around his shaft, stroking softly. Before he knew it, you had your mouth around his tip and he swore you felt like heaven. The warm wetness of your mouth was divine as you took in as much of him as you could. You slowly pulled back to slide your tongue over his tip before leaning forward to swallow him down again. You felt him bump against the back of your throat and you gagged a bit as your body adjusted to the intrusion. Santi was panting as you bobbed your head on him and his fingers tangled in your hair. He didn’t put any pressure on your head, simply guiding you with his hand as you moved your lips up and down him. All too quickly, however, he was tightening his grip on your hair and pulling you off of him.
“What’s wrong?” you asked, looking up at him with swollen lips and smudged mascara.
“Don’t wanna cum in your mouth, querida,” he murmured, and he scooted back on the bed to make room for you to climb up. You crawled over him, feeling the slickness of your arousal coat the inside of your thighs.
“Wanna feel you, Santi.” He looked up at you with sparkling eyes as you dragged your slick folds over his throbbing cock. He groaned as you teased him, sliding him through your wetness and rubbing your clit against his hardness. You keened in pleasure at the spark it sent through you, and Santi dug his fingertips into the soft flesh at your hips. He urged you to sink down onto him, aching to feel you from the inside. For a moment, you both just enjoyed the feeling of him enveloped in your wet heat, and then you were moving with fervor.
Santi bucked his hips up, fucking into you desperately. As you rocked your hips against him, each movement backward had your clit bumping deliciously against his pubic bone. You felt the familiar warmth blooming in your belly again and your walls squeezed the delightful intrusion. Your mouths were moving frantically against each other as you both chased your release, the two of you just a tangle of limbs as you tried to touch every inch of each other. As you moved your hips faster, your climax began to crest and you clenched tightly around him, triggering his own orgasm. You felt him thrust up into you and release, filling you with his cum as he felt the fluttering of your walls around him.
As you both tried to catch your breath, you slid off of him and curled into his side. With one arm under you and his other hand brushing your sweaty hair out of your face, you couldn’t help but grin at him. Your breathing was slowly returning back to normal and your heart rate began to calm as he grinned back at you.
“Santi, that was…” you began, but you couldn’t even find the words to describe it, so you just sighed.
Luckily, he seemed to be on the same page as he chuckled and answered, “Yeah. Yeah, it was.” The room was quiet then as you both maneuvered to get your tired and sated bodies under the covers of the bed. You laid your head on his chest, placing a gentle kiss to the patch of hair there as your eyelids grew heavy. Santi placed another kiss to the top of your head and as you fell asleep to the gentle repetition of him stroking your hair, you refused to think about the conversation that would need to happen in the morning.

Chapter 5
Author’s note: I use Grammarly to fix my mistakes, but there could still be some so sorry for that. Also, I am getting back into writing and am hoping to have a few more works out soon! Please reblog, like, or comment feedback is appreciated.
Word Count: 4,400
Warnings: None? Sirius being a d*ck? Maybe language, but I don’t think so.
Regulus wasn’t sure how much time had passed as he stroked his niece's hair. He was mad at his brother for basically throwing away the only good thing that had ever come from the Black family. Sirius was too blinded by the past to see what was right in front of him. As children, Sirius often told Regulus that he was their family's favorite and that it bothered him, but if he knew what it was like to be less loved then how can he love Harry more than Ali? He understood that Harry was Sirius's Godson, but couldn’t he love Ali and Harry equally? If Sirius made the effort maybe Ali and the other children could even be friends. His heart ached from the emotional battle that Ali was going through right now. Even if Sirius didn’t see it, he and Remus did. Ali’s light was dimmer than before and when she was lighting up again after finding out Sirius never came for her, Sirius just had to go and snuffed it out.
Carefully sliding out from under Ali and placing a pillow under her head Regulus left the room. He shut the door behind him casting a locking spell so she wouldn’t be bothered. He needed to speak with Remus first before doing anything. They needed to decide what to do about Ali. As much as Regulus wanted to spend time with her before she went back to school he didn’t want her to be this upset anymore. He walked into the study to find Remus and Nymphadora sitting near the fireplace.
“How is she?” Nymphadora blurted the question as soon as she saw her cousin. Remus had owled her after Ali had gone to her room. The older sister in her wanted to go up to Sirius and give him a piece of her mind, but she knew that it wouldn’t do any good.
“She’s asleep for now. All the fighting has exhausted her. I honestly don’t know what to do. I want her here, this is her home, but if Sirius doesn’t stop acting like the brut that he is it is going to hurt her more. Speaking of Sirius, where is he? It’s quiet.” Regulus flopped down on the chair across from Remus and Nymphadora raking a hand through his hair. His worry for Ali was causing him a headache. On one hand, he wanted to send Ali to stay at the Malfoy Manor for the remainder of summer, but on the other, he wanted to hold her close and have her stay in her home where she belonged.
“Sirius left with Harry after you went upstairs. He hasn’t been home since. The Weasleys stepped out to Diagon Alley to get the kids stuff for school.” Remus replied. He was secretly thankful that the house was mainly empty. This way at least Ali could come down if she felt like it without the chance of someone bothering her. Remus was having the same thoughts as Regulus about keeping Ali at home virus's sending her to the Manor. He just wanted his niece to be happy. The hope that he had of Sirius and Ali having the father/daughter relationship was gone. If only Remus could get Sirius to open his eyes to the pain he was causing to the girl, but Sirius was nothing if not stubborn.
“I think I am going to write to Cissa and see if she can keep Ali for the rest of summer. If that’s what it takes for her to be happy then so be it. We can see her off at the -“
“I don’t want to leave,” Ali’s voice interrupted. “I want to stay here with you. Please don’t make me leave. I can handle it, I promise.”
Ali knew that she and Regulus were going to have to talk about the fact that she called him dad, but that was a private conversation. Right now she needed to convince the adults in the room that she didn’t need to leave. She could take Sirius. Yes the words that he had said hurt her and the actions he did tonight furthered that hurt in her heart, but she was done. She didn’t owe him anything, and it was clear she knew that he didn’t want to be her father. She had meant what she said to Regulus. He was her father in all the ways that counted. He loved her unconditionally, was always there for her, and protected her.
She went and sat on the couch in between Nymphadora and Remus who wrapped an arm around her pulling her close to his chest. “It might be best if you went and stayed for the rest of the summer at the Manor, Al. This isn’t good for you mentally. We all can see how drained you are.”
“No, this is my home. I can handle it. I have you all plus the older Weasleys and Fleur. You'll protect me and if I need to get away for a little bit I’ll owl Blaise or Draco to go to Diagon Alley or something. I want to spend time with you. Times are hard right now and you never know when you are going to lose someone and I would like to have as much time with each of you just in case.”
Regulus leaned forward taking Ali’s hand in his, “Nothing, and I mean nothing is going to happen to us. I love you more than you could ever imagine and if you want to stay here you can.” Ali smiles brightly at that before Regulus cut her off, “but you have to tell me, Remus, or Severus, if anything happens. And you have to come out of your room. I am not having you locking yourself away again. Got it?”
Ali pounced on Regulus, hugging his neck tight. She was excited to spend some more time with her family. She had meant what she said about never knowing when something was going to happen. Wizards had been disappearing all over London and she was genuinely scared something was going to happen to her loved ones. She was going to make it a point to take plenty of photos and make enough memories to last a lifetime the next couple of weeks.
Regulus held his niece tight, fighting back the tears when she whispered, “Thanks, Dad,” into his ear. He had been called a lot of things in his life, but this was one title he was going to wear proudly.
Remus’s voice interrupted the moment, “wait for a second, why are you going to owl Blaise? We have an agreement, young lady, no boys till you're thirty!”
Ali’s giggle was music to those in the room with her, and for the first time that summer they all saw Ali smile at home the brightest she had since everyone arrived.
————
The rest of the day was eventful which was something that everyone was thankful for. Nymphadora left shortly after spending some time with Ali since she had something to attend to with Moody, so that left Regulus, Ali, and Remus to watch the Star Wars movies in Ali’s room. Kreacher brought them snacks while they made a fort on the floor. Ali was incredibly content laying on the mounds of pillows in between her Uncles. When she was younger they would have movie nights like this once a month until she started Hogwarts. Even then she and her friends carried on the tradition in the boy's dorm since Draco was often present at the ones hosted at home. She wished that she could have Draco over now, but knew that if she brought him here then everyone in the house would throw a fit about it, maybe it was something to bring up to Regulus later.
Molly called them all down for dinner shortly after the second film ended. Leaving the mess on the floor the trio made their way downstairs with Ali trailing behind her Uncles. She could feel her nerves spike the closer she got to the dining room. She thought about excusing herself stating she wasn’t hungry, but the loud growl in her stomach gave her hunger away. Everyone had already sat down beside Harry and Sirius when they got into the room. Regulus pulled the seat out next to him for his niece. Fleur shot her a smile when she sat down by her uncle with Charlie on her other side. At least she was sitting near someone who didn’t hate her.
Chatter and the sounds of forks on plates filled the room as everyone got their fill of Molly’s meatballs and onion sauce. Everyone broke off into separate conversations. Remus, Regulus, and Arthur talking about the Ministry, the younger Weasleys, and Hermione talking about Quidditch, Bill and Fleur about their upcoming wedding, and Charlie and Ali talking about his work in Romania. “What are you planning on doing after you leave Hogwarts?”
Ali shot a glance over at Remus who was doing a terrible job of disguising his eavesdropping on the duo. “I am thinking about becoming a professor. I like creatures obviously so I was thinking something along those lines, but I also like Herbology. So maybe that. I just know I want to teach.”
Charlie shot her a grin. “Have you thought about where? I know Hogwarts has Sprout for Herbology and Hagrid was doing Care of Magical Creatures, but you still have three more years of school so maybe they’ll need someone by the time you're done.”
Ali shrugged her shoulders. In all honesty, she wanted to leave England and travel for a bit but knew that if she brought it up now it would be a fight or something so she bit her tongue. “Maybe.”
The noise came to a halt when the door slammed open in the living room. Everyone hopped to their feet, wands at the ready. It felt like hours had passed before the intruder walked through the door. “Sirius! Harry! Merlin, you scared us all.”
“Sorry, it’s raining hard and we were in a rush to get back home.” Sirius shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal. Everyone retook their seats beside Milly who served Harry and Sirius. Ali tried her hardest to keep from looking at the latest duo that entered, not wanting to cause any more trouble or to give Sirius a reason to lash out at her.
Dinner passed rather quickly, conversations flowed in their small groups. Charlie had gone with Fleur and Bill on a scouting mission shortly after eating, while Fred and George worked on new products for their shop. Ali was in her head thinking about asking to go to meet Pansy in the coming days to look at a new book shop. Pansy wasn’t much of a reader but was always looking for an excuse to get out of her house. She was startled when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Looking up Molly was smiling softly at her while handing her a letter in a dark blue envelope. She instantly knew who the letter was from since only one person used that kind of envelope when writing her.
“This came for you, dear, when you were with your uncles. I didn't want to bother you then I almost forgot just now.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Weasley.” Ali smiled at the kind woman. Despite her feelings towards most of the Weasley children, their parents were quite nice.
Molly patted her cheek before walking off. Ali started to rip the top off when she got Regulus’s eye and he winked at her. He knew who the letter was from having met the boy a few times already. Her cheeks flushed and continued to do so while reading it.
Dear Supernova,
I hope you are surviving the dreadfulness that is upon you right now with all the people in your house. Yes, Draco told me what was going on yesterday when I finally threatened to out his crush if he didn’t explain why we hadn’t been seeing you a lot this summer. I have to say I am quite hurt that you didn’t tell me yourself. Best friends I thought. Just joking, but seriously you could have told me about him and I wouldn't have said a word to anyone.
I miss you, Supernova. We’ve only got to see each other once this summer and we both know when school starts you will have a book shoved in front of your face in the first three minutes. Could we get together sometime this week? It has been awful at home and if I have to hear Draco's voice one more time without you there to tell him off for being annoying I may throw myself off the astronomy tower.
Your uncle may not agree, but you could come to stay at mine for a night. Mother agreed to it as long as Regulus does and we have separate rooms. If you can't, maybe I can come to you? I don’t really care what the redheads have to say about me being there so don’t worry about that. We have much to catch up on; like the fact that you got Headgirl and also didn’t write and tell me. I had to find that little tidbit out from Parkinson's. Don’t worry we’ll catch up whether that's soon or on the train.
love,
Zabini
Ali felt a pang of guilt hit her square in the chest. She hadn’t meant to forget to fill Blaise in on her life but it had been so crazy recently she hadn’t got to write anyone much. In all the truth no one knew that she had gotten Headgirl. She had gotten the letter from Flitwich a few days after the Weasley’s arrived and completely forgot. Although she told her Uncles she didn’t want to go anywhere spending some time with Blaise sounded nice. Deciding to just rip the bandaid off she looked up to find Regulus and Remus looking at her with amused smiles on their faces.
“What’s you got there, Ali?” Remus asked, causing her cheeks to flame red. She wasn’t scared to say that she wanted to hang out with a boy. She did it all the time whether it was Blaise, Theo, or Draco; it was more to do with the fact that she was about to ask to spend the night at a boys' house. Even if they were going to be in separate rooms and they had fallen asleep cuddled together weeks prior at the Malfoys, something none of her Uncles knew, it was going to be a little fight to get Remus to agree as he made the ‘no dating till you’re thirty’ rule when she was five and asked for a boyfriend for Christmas.
Looking around she noticed all attention was on her even if the other adults in the room were making it seem like they weren’t listening while the children openly gawked. “Uhm,” she was cut off by Severus stepping into the room. Great, now she had to face all three Uncles. Where were Dora and Cissa when she needed them?
Severus hugged her quickly before taking a place by Regulus. “Who's the letter from Ali?” He asked her letting her know there was no getting out of it and that she was going to have to spill the beans.
“It’s from Blaise,” A look of amusement passed Regulus’s face, making her think that he knew what was in the letter already while Remus looked like he was going to snatch the letter out of her hands and read it himself if she didn’t hurry up.
“And what possibly could it say to have your cheeks looking like the inside of Gryffindor common room?” Regulus teased further.
She coughed trying to get her nerves resealed. “He was saying that we need to catch up before school starts, and invited me to come and stay with him and Mrs. Zabini for a night this week.”
Remus grunted while Regulus smiled. Ali had to hide a giggle as she noticed all the other mouths in the room had dropped to the floor. Ali knew that except for Hermione and Harry the Weasley’s never stayed or had anyone else with them.
“Can I, please? His mother said we would have separate rooms and she will be there as well as the house-elves. We only got to see one another once this summer. He said if I can’t he could come here, but honestly, I think the first option is better. Please?” She pulled out her best puppy eyes and pouty lip. She was not above begging for it but didn’t want to do so with everyone staring at her.
Regulus looked over at Remus. Ali could see the silent conversation going on between them. Regulus’s head inclined slightly toward Ali which she hoped to Merlin was a good thing. Remus looked back at his niece with a look in his eye she couldn’t read. “Rosalynn said you’ll have separate rooms?” Ali nodded her head so fast she almost gave herself whiplash. “And you’ll stay in them?” Once again she nodded, although she knew that they more than likely would be in the family room till late hours in the night. He looked back at Regulus, “you have no problems with her going?”
“No, I already knew about it. Rosalynn wrote about two days ago. If she wants to go, that's fine. You know Rosalynn will look after her as she does Blaise. And the Heavens know that boy would jump in front of the Knight Bus for Ali.” Regulus chuckled at Ali's shocked expression.
“Y-you knew? Why didn’t you say anything?” Ali struggled to get the words out.
“Rosalynn said Blaise wanted to ask you. She was just giving me a heads up, knowing how Remus is with boys and you. You know we talked quite often, Als.” Regulus winked at her.
“You may go,” Remus stated. She was shocked she didn’t have to put up more of a fight.
“WHAT?” Sirius shrieked. He knew that Regulus would let her go to the Death Eaters house, but Remus? He thought he could count on his ‘friend’ to at least say no. “You’re letting her go to the Death Eaters house? AGAIN? Who's also a boy and staying the night? Are you mad?”
Remus looked at Sirius with disdain, “No I am not. She is a good girl and Blaise has been her friend for years. Rosalynn loves her as much as we do and would never let anything happen. And for God's sake quit calling everyone a Death Eater.”
“Outrageous.”
“Sirius, you have no say in what she does. You gave that up last night. Ali is a good girl who makes good choices. Not only that but she also deserves a little something since she got Headgirl this year, don’t you think?” Regulus smirked as he saw the Granger girl's face fall.
“You got Headgirl?” Hermione whispered to Ali with disbelief lacing her voice.
“Yeah, I did. Draco got Headboy I believe, but it may be Theo. I haven’t asked yet.”
“Why do you and Draco get Head of Houses? Why not Hermione and -“ Ali cut her dear Godbrother off.
“And who? You? Ron? Why would any of you get Head of Houses with all the trouble you bring in? Sneaking out, stealing things, picking fights. We do have the highest marks in most classes as well as treat others equally unlike the likes of you.”
If looks could kill Ali would be dead three times over. In all honesty, she kinda felt bad for the younger Weasley boy seeing as all of his older brothers, bar Fred and George had been Headboy. But then she thought about the trouble he and his friends had caused her and her friends as well as others over the years. Harry preached about equality among the houses but she had witnessed many times when younger Slytherins were picked on by Gryiffndors. Hufflepuffs generally didn't have any problems with the other houses so long as everyone was being just. Ravenclaws tended to keep to themselves unless it really involved them. Whereas Slytherins preferred to stand up to those picking on other Slytherins especially the younger ones. Slytherins were always made out to be the bullies when in general if you got to know them people would notice that they are a lot more than what their parents used to be.
Ally had heard the stories of how mean James and Sirius were to those in Slytherin even if they never did anything to them. She believed in harmless fun could be had pulling pranks, but tricking someone into going to a place where a werewolf was was downright cruel. She had no doubts in her mind that James and Sirius were once good people like her Uncle Remus is now, but seeing as Sirius still acts like a child those doubts were becoming known.
“I just think that Slytherins shouldn’t be Head of House when all you will do is favor your own, and treat everyone else like dirt,” Ron stated.
“Ronald Weasley! How dare you say such a thing?!” Molly exclaimed.
“It’s alright Mrs. Weasey. I am used to hearing such things come from them and others in their house,” Ali looked Ron in the eyes, “You seem to forget that I’m a Ravenclaw, not a Slytherin. I do not favor anyone and will not when I start Head Girl duties but know this. I will give you as many detentions as you deserve if you are caught bullying, harassing, belittling, any of the other houses. You may think that Gryiffndors are the bravest of the houses and maybe you are in some ways, but you are cowardly in others. Maybe some Slytherins are as bad as you make them seem, but Harry,” she turned her head slightly to the side, “you seem to forget just which house Peter Pettigrew was in when he was the one who betrayed your parents. And Regulus was in Slytherin but seems to be more loyal to his friends and family than that rat was.”
“It seems that Alianova has given you all something to think about as you're getting ready for bed,” Molly stated looking at all the children present in the room. Her face grew red when she saw that none of them had moved a muscle. “Now.”
Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny, jumped from their seats and booked it to the stairs scared of Mrs. Weasley’s wrath. At some point, Charlie, Fluer, and Bill came back from scouting. Charlie ruffled Ali’s hair causing her to grin. “Good job, kid. You’ll make a great Head Girl.” Bill and Fleur nodded in agreement. “Nothing happened while we were out. We’ll give a full debrief tomorrow, but we will be heading to bed as well. Good night everyone.”
Molly walked to Ali and pulled her up out of her chair before placing both hands on Ali’s pale cheeks. “Don’t you worry, dear, I will be talking with all of them in the morning. You made a lot of valid points, and I for one am proud that you are Head Girl.”
She kissed her forehead before taking her husband to go to bed after waving her wand to get the kitchen clean once again. Arthur offered Ali a small smile before disappearing behind his wife. Sirius scoffed at the behavior which everyone heard but chose to ignore.
Ali turned to her three Uncles, waiting for the answer about going to her friends, and the scene that just played out in the kitchen.
“I am proud of you as well, Alianova. You have done excellent, and I know it is Remus and Regulus' decision about going to Blaises’, but I see no problem with it. I will stay in the guest room. Come get me if you need me. Good night, Ali.” He hugged her tightly, making Ali tear up slightly at the thought of Servus being proud of her. It also made her giddy at the thought of rubbing it in Draco’s face since Severus is his Godfather and never said such a thing to him.
Remus followed after Servus, wrapping his niece in a bear hug around her shoulders. The height difference amusing Regulus to no end seeing as Ali only came about midway in Remus’s chest. “You may go as long as it’s okay with Reg, and you stay in separate rooms. I am a little mad though that you didn’t tell me yourself about getting Head Girl, but I am still incredibly proud of you. No one deserves this more than you do, not even Harry.” The last part was whispered in her ear. He kissed her forehead, before heading to his room.
With the three Blacks being the only ones left in the room. “I don’t think you should go.” Sirius’s voice was venomous as he thought about his only child, his legacy, spending time with Death Eaters.
“It’s a good thing it doesn’t matter what you think isn’t it?” Regulus smirked at his older brother. He was not going to take this away from his child. “Ali, you may go so long as you stay in your separate rooms whenever the two of you decide to go to sleep because I know from having all your mates over it will be late.” He walked to Ali cradling her freckled face in his hands. “I am so proud to call you my daughter. Even after all that you have been through in your life you have still managed to form your own beliefs and thoughts as well as stand up for them. You deserve Head Girl over anyone else, and hopefully, you get to share it with one of your friends.”
Ali dove into her Uncle's chest. Tears welling up into her eyes at the thought that he really did think of her as his own even if she already knew it. It was nice to hear out loud. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. I love you, dad.” She kissed his cheek before heading to her room to write Blaise.
Sirius felt his anger sore to new heights when he heard Ali call Regulus dad. He had enough courtesy to wait till she was out of earshot before grounding out, “We need to talk, Regulus.”

The Wedding Date (Frankie Morales x F!Reader) (part 1)
Fic summary: After walking in on your boyfriend boning the neighbour, you suddenly find yourself single and without a plus one to four weddings over the summer. Wanting to avoid looks of pity and the 'still single?' comments, your best friend Olivia Miller suggests you take a friend of her brothers; Frankie Morales.
Warnings: Swearing, slut-shamey attitudes
Rating: 18+
W/C: 2k
Prologue - Next
You awoke with a raging headache.
“Fucking hell,” you muttered, sitting up and pressing the heels of your hand into your eyes until you saw spots. Deep breath, in, hold, and out. It will not be a disaster.
It was the morning of the first of four weddings you had been invited to. When you had received the invites the year before, you had been in a relationship with your ex Michael, and as such, had ticked the plus one box without a second thought. Now, you were very single and in an effort to not be an asshole at what was probably the most stressful time of someone’s life, you had agreed to go with someone who you had never met. But you trusted Olivia to not set you up with a psycho murderer, and the idea of not having people who knew about Michael look at you with pity was mighty appealing.
You washed your face in your tiny bathroom, popping a couple of Advil for the headache. It was probably dehydration-related, but you figured it couldn’t hurt to speed things along while you slowly downed a gallon of icy water from the fridge.
Walking into your kitchen, you checked on your tortoise tank, dropping a handful of chopped vegetables in for Mr. Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was the only consistent man in your life, and you appreciated the tiny Russian Tortoise immensely for that.
“I wish you could be my plus one,” you murmured, stroking his shell as he munched loudly on a piece of lettuce. But alas, tortoises were not socially acceptable wedding dates. You were also pretty sure that taking a man you had never met before was also not socially acceptable, but it seemed more acceptable than a reptile who shat wherever he liked. And no one had to know that you had never met this Frankie guy before. Hell, you knew enough about him through casual text exchanges that he wasn’t a complete stranger.
Olivia had told you to think of it as a Tinder hook-up, because in her words, if you use that beautiful brain to think in the abstract, it wasn’t any different.
Except you wouldn’t be hooking up with this man, you’d be taking him to weddings, pretending like your heart still didn’t ache every time you thought of Michael, and about how he had betrayed you, and going home. Alone.
Not that you really minded being alone. You craved it a lot of the time; the freedom it gave for you to be your truest self, but on days where people would be looking at you and wondering . . . Yeah, that wasn’t appealing.
You sat down on your fluffy white rug with a sigh, turning the TV on to a re-run of Love Island, and dragged your makeup case and mirror towards you. Frankie wasn’t picking you up for another three hours, but more often than not you had to re-do your makeup at least twice before you were fully satisfied, so the earlier you started the better.
As you listened to the almost unintelligible British voices, you hoped that Frankie Morales wasn’t a creep.
~
At that moment, Frankie Morales was thinking almost the exact thing about you. Up until that morning, he had been feeling confident about the whole thing; the promise free food had been enough for him to say yes. Now, on the morning of the first wedding, he was feeling less sure. He had made a commitment though, and he was not the type of person to easily back out of one of those.
Frankie sipped on his coffee and triple-checked the directions to your place again. Twenty minutes away in traffic, twelve without. The venue, a lakeside garden, was a further forty-five minutes. Frankie had planned everything down to the minute - he could blame that on nerves and the fact that he hated being late almost as much as he hated the cold.
He looked down at his phone, re-reading the sporadic texts between the two of you. It was mainly introductory stuff, dates he needed to be free (if he still wanted to do this after today), and the dress codes, because apparently weddings now had dress codes that extended beyond ‘your most acceptable shit’. Today was ‘casual’, something that made Frankie blink twice. Surely, he had thought, that doesn’t mean shorts and flip-flops. He had asked Benny, who didn’t have a clue, who had asked Will who shrugged and said to Google it.
Feeling like this was the best course of action, Frankie did exactly that. As it turned out, normal casual and wedding casual were two very different things.
He chose his nicest button-up for the day - pale blue and free from stains. He had borrowed a pair of chinos from Will, which fit surprisingly better than he had expected, and dug out a pair of dress shoes from the back of his closet.
He examined his reflection in the mirror, combing his hair back with gel. He didn’t exactly feel like himself without his cap, but he knew that the old oil-stained thing wasn’t proper wedding attire. Even if the dress code was ‘casual’.
His phone buzzed on the table as he tied the laces of his shoes.
Benny: have fun today playaaaa, lmk if you need a ride home. rmbr dont stress, i met her n shes cool
Frankie sent a thumbs up in response, too distracted by nerves to send anything more coherent. He shouldn’t have been this nervous. He had to think of this as a favour for a friend of a friend, nothing more.
“Get it together, Fransisco,” he muttered to himself when his alarm buzzed, warning him that it was time to leave. He wiped his sweaty palms on his chinos and climbed into his truck. He took the nice truck, his old Chevy smelt too much like oil and stale cigarettes for him to even consider taking it.
He hummed along to the Stones as he drove through the thankfully light traffic. The neighbourhood you lived in was quaint, with brightly painted houses and palm trees lining the streets. When he opened his window, he could hear the ocean in the distance.
Frankie pulled up out the front of the address you had given; a tiny bungalow with a faded yellow exterior and a mailbox made to look like a tortoise that was clearly brand new. Frankie turned the truck off, made sure his shirt was tucked in at the back and walked the path to your front door.
God what if she’s expecting me to do all the date stuff? He thought knocking on your door. He pushed that thought out of his mind with a silent reprimand. You had told him, hell, even Olivia had told him, that all you needed was someone to go with you so you could avoid all the awkward ‘still single then?’ pity glances and comments. He could understand, relate, to that. Shit, he still got them and he had been divorced for almost four years.
“I’ll be out in a second!” You called, your voice muffled by the walls between you. He heard a loud thud, and the door flew open.
Well, shit.
Photos didn’t do you justice.
You wore a dress of pale green that stopped mid-calf, and a pair of heels that almost made the two of you the same height. Your hair was pulled away from your face in soft waves, and Frankie found his eyes drawn to a small gold pendant that winked at your throat.
“Frankie,” it came out more like a statement than a question, but Frankie still found himself nodding. “I really can’t thank you enough for this, seriously you’re doing me a huge favour.” You locked the door and dropped the keys into a small glittery handbag.
“It’s not a big deal,” Frankie said, stepping aside so you could walk in front of him to his car. You shook your head.
“Trust me, it is to me. My cousin Hector offered to come with but he smells like tinned asparagus and lives in fucking Rhode Island so he’d stay with me all summer and he’d asparagus up the place.” You paused for a moment, pink lip curling up. “Plus, my tortoise hates him.”
“You have a tortoise?” Frankie asked, buckling his seatbelt and glancing at the tortoise mailbox.
“His name is Mr. Baldwin and I would die for him. Also if there was some kind of technology developed that would allow him to talk, and he asked me to kill someone, I’d do that.”
Frankie was struggling to keep up with your rapid pace, but filed away bits of information in case it came up later.
“Can I ask something?” He asked when there was a moment of silence.
“Of course,” you said, pulling out a piece of gum.
“Why aren’t you going with Olivia?” It had been a question playing on his mind for the past week but didn’t feel like it was something that could be brought up over text without the tone being misconstrued.
“She’s already going with her situationship for three of them, and the fourth, the one in Virginia, she’s going to Nevada for a work conference.”
What the fuck is a situationship, Frankie wondered, knowing he’d have to Google the word later. Things fell into a not-quite comfortable silence, the only sound was the radio playing some glam rock song from the 80s.
“So, anything I should know about the happy couple?” Frankie asked, breaking the silence.
“The bride, Mariette, tore her ACL in college and it’s her main personality trait,” you supplied. “The groom, Luke, has a vendetta against ‘Big Tech’,” you made air quotes and rolled your eyes, “so if you talk to him probably don’t mention anything to do with any type of social media.”
“They sound . . .” Frankie struggled to find the right word.
“Insufferable?”
“I wasn’t going to say that,” Frankie grimaced, although he had been thinking it.
“They are, trust me, I went to college with both of them. I only said I was going in the first place because Olivia begged me,” you shrugged. “But I don’t know - if anything, it should be interesting. Mariette and Luke never struck me as the type to have a drama-free wedding.”
Frankie smiled, hoping you were right about the interesting part.
The parking lot of the venue was already half-filled by the time Frankie pulled in, people in their best casual wear were milling about or wandering into the gardens. Out of the corner of his eye, Frankie saw you pull a face, gazing out at the gathering patrons.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah just a bunch of people I haven’t seen in years,” you said. You turned to him and bit your lip. “Look, I didn’t want to say anything, but I had a bit of a reputation of being a whore in college, and while most of it is false, there is some truth to the rumours and it’s been years, and like, I’m not ashamed of who I was, but they all still see me as-”
“You’re rambling,” Frankie said gently, reaching out to place a hand on your arm. He was startled at how soft your skin felt under his fingers. “For what it’s worth, I don’t care about rumours, and I don’t care if you had an orgy with fifty people. Who you are now is what matters, not who you were.”
You smiled, hearing the truth in his words. Frankie had experience with people focusing on the past and refusing to look beyond that. He wouldn’t hold your past against you, and he hoped you wouldn’t hold his against him if it ever came to that.
“Alright,” you took a deep breath and tucked a lock of hair behind your ear, “let’s get this shit-show on the road.”
Frankie noticed how you stood with your back straight, face an impassive mask. He had to admire you a little, how easily you were able to become someone unbothered by the words of others.

whiskey buisness - john shelby x reader (part 2 of ?)
Tumblr media
read part one here!
a/n: hey loves! i'm finishing up school rn, but i had to get this out and i'm about to start working on a tommy request immediately after i upload this. anyways, i'm so excited to post this series, it's incredible and i can't thank my bestie @stxdyblr-2k enough. she is a fucking genius :)
prompt: you can't get john out of your head. lo and behold, here he is.
warnings: fluff, mentions of smut, angsty af, soft john (ugh my heart)
Despite your best efforts, you'd been unable to stop yourself yearning for John Shelby. Your pokey flat now often lay empty; you were far too busy to mope at home due to your career as a personal assistant to a local solicitor who was allied with the Shelby's, attending rallies and lectures with Ada and the drunken nights you'd spend at various mansions, galleries and club openings with the "razor chasers" you'd become friendly with due to their refusal to leave Ada alone. Yet still, in those odd seconds of calm you seized over a cigarette, the first seconds after a bump of Tokyo, when you carefully applied your makeup, styled your hair or bathed, you'd think of him. The way the pads of his fingertips felt on your skin, how he’d muttered in your ear how pretty you looked.
But this was different to when you were dreaming about John at 15; he was no longer the allusive older brother of Ada who had a string of beautiful girls on rotation. He wasn’t a fantasy anymore. He was true flesh and blood, and for a moment he had wanted you.
It would be delicious if the whole situation hadn't left a bitter taste in your mouth. Of course you came back to Brum to only immediately fuck it up. The first night, and already you were so close to ruining everything? Looking back, now that you were so close with Ada once more, now that you knew who John had grown to be, that night was cringe inducing. Luckily, no one had seemed to catch on. Luckily, you thrived in the Small Heath rumour mill once again. All the gossip about you was mainly about your substance use, the lads you were seen curling up with outside nightclubs, your intelligence, your helpful nature, sometimes your questionable politics but that was all. John's was far darker, stories of blood, death and gasoline. Recently, the tales of his conquests had quietened, but only due to the lurid delight taken by the factory workers in talking about the recent blinding of some poor fucker who'd crossed the wrong person. Obviously, a lot of the detail had to be exaggerated for shock value and to boost the Shelby status, solidifying them as notorious throughout Birmingham city and its rural surroundings. There were murmurs everywhere about the violent John Shelby: ruthless, cocky, vengeful. It seemed impossible that the same man who cracked shit jokes just to see you smile, kissed you with so much desperation, and prioritised getting you off first could cause such harm without an ounce of guilt or shame to slow his swagger.
Whispers of war were far more constant, but then again, people would say anything for a reaction. You didn't bring it up with Ada. You refused to (openly) partake in mindless gossip on principle, yet you were hungry for information about him.
***********
You'd long forgotten whose wedding you were at. Some loyal blinder, a close friend of the Shelby's, the occasion calling for a large white marquee to be built onto one of Tommy's gardens, fully staffed with the best chef and service team money could buy (from a London restaurant at short notice; when Finn told you the extortionate figure Tommy had paid, your jaw had dropped). The cake, dress and decorations were stunning; you weren't sure exactly what the groom had done for the Shelby's but you could only assume the worst for what they'd splashed out on him.
However, thinking like that only spoilt your night: you'd realised at your fifth club takeover, now you repeated it like a mantra constantly. You'd quickly learnt every excess the Shelby's granted to those outside their circle were due to some perceived sacrifice for being associated with them. Well, that's what you chose to believe after John had sent a junior blinder to your office with a bouquet, the Monday morning after he turned you down. So, it was best to smile and take the shit, get paid, and get out as soon as possible. You were to keep your head down until then.
Yet, keeping your head down was difficult tonight. Ada had treated you to a shopping trip to London for the occasion this morning, Arthur forcing the junior blinders to tag along next to you on the train and trailing less than two metres behind you for hours. You missed the days when it was just you and Ada. It was far more simple without the stares whenever the two of you stepped out. Ada had gotten used to it, she'd devised her own methods of being completely alone; complex plans involving leaving a window open, knotting sheets into a rope and twisting her ankles. Not that she minded, she reckoned the suffocation of being a Shelby was much worse than a few bruised ankles.
You were wearing a clingy emerald green dress from some fancy French boutique you couldn't even pronounce, the diamond necklace sitting along your collarbone and the jewels dangling through your ears were on loan from Ada. You felt eyes unpicking you the moment you entered the after-party. Your arm was linked through Ada's as per usual, she looked equally stylish in a peacock blue number that set off her eyes, her delicate features perfected with makeup.
You'd quickly found your gaggle and began drinking and dancing the night away. Whispers about snow arose from your table, people disappearing to the toilets to rail a line on the bathroom counter, then to the dance floor or to the lap of the poor fucker who'd hold back their hair while they vomited in just a few hours. At least the Blinders were polite about it. Isaiah would kill them if they weren’t. You'd let your arm be tugged on various bathroom trips, treated among your group like secret missions although you weren't entirely subtle about it.
What you weren't aware of was across the marquee, you were being watched by the three men in your life who you'd never want to see you in this state: the Shelby's.
"Looks like Finn's taken your spot, John." Arthur yelled in John's ear over the loud music, gesturing to the youngest Shelby sat at the table next to you who was staring up at you in complete adoration as you chatted across him to Michael, seemingly arguing with him. By the looks of it, you were winning.
John pulled a face at Arthur. “Fuck off, old man. That'll never happen. Finn’s too young for her." He immediately regretted the words that had fallen out of his mouth, revealing far too much for his comfort.
"It's not impossible."
"He's just not right for her, yeah?"
"And you are?"
John didn't bother to bless him with a verbal response, instead flipping him off and downing the rest of his whiskey. "It's not like that."
"What's it like then? Because from where I'm sitting, it's pretty fucking clear, John." Arthur slurred, glass of whiskey sloshing onto his sleeve.
"You're too gone to even know you're chatting shit." John sneered, standing up, "I'm off for a smoke and some fresh air. Try not to fuck anything in my absence, both of you."
His brothers cursed him out as he left. John took a second to figure out his route, purposefully having to cross your path, gesturing for you to follow him subtly. He was surprised you came trailing after him, telling Michael that you weren’t done yelling at him and you’d be back. When you were both only metres from the marquee, he knew you were fucked. You were instantly bored, begging him for a cigarette, which he lit for you, shaking his head at your state.
"You're a fucking mess, love." He said, mouth sloping attractively to one side.
"Takes one to know one, John-boy. Where are we off to, then?"
"Somewhere fucking quiet, can barely hear myself think. Plus, you need to sober the fuck up, lass." He said, softly, as he walked across the dew soaked grass. You followed, heels in hand, holding your dress up as not to ruin it. He sighed, taking the shoes from your hands and wrapping his blazer around your shoulders, linking your arm through his for stability. He kept the distance respectful, but there wasn’t any denying the thick tension in the summer air between the two of you. Ahead, there was a small stone bench sat at the foot of one of Thomas' manicured gardens, and John offered his hand to help you sit. You made small talk and caught up on each other's lives, and you noted John only seemed to glow when you asked about his kids. He talked at length, the drink seemingly unhinging his jaw. There he was again, the John you knew and had admired for so many years. You could sit here forever, watching his blue eyes sparkle in the sunlight. Yet, it just wasn’t meant to be. You wished you could stop time just for a bit, give you enough moments to memorize the freckles on his skin.
"You know the night I first came home?" The alcohol and snow had loosened your lips. You were teetering on the edge of your boundaries, but you couldn't care enough to hold back.
"The night where absolutely nothing happened?" He joked, raising an eyebrow at you, cautious that you'd randomly brought it up in your state. "Sweetheart, this can wait."
He was warning you. For a second you managed to bite your tongue, but curiosity tipped you over the edge.
"But something nearly happened, right?"
"Y/N. Don't." He warned, his tone icy, suddenly distancing from you, hiding between an emotional boundary which he didn't wish to explore.
"John, it's just us. Can't we even talk about it?"
"There's nothing to talk about, though. You were off your face then, and now. That's fine. We know where we stand. It can't happen."
"I wanted to. I do want to."
"You don't. Trust me. You need a nice lad who'll marry you and look after you. Just need to keep your nose clean long enough yeah?" He teased, trying to lighten the mood, blue eyes begging you to move on.
Your head turned to face him, your face contorting in a mixture of confusion and irritation. "You don't get to tell me what I want or need. The last thing I want is to marry any lad, nice or not."
"I didn't mean it like that, right? Look, I just meant you deserve better than Shelby scum. You're going places you know? Don't settle for Small Heath." John responded with a pained sigh. He didn’t want to get into it with you; not here, not like this. He'd thought about it, naturally. You were constantly on his mind, yet only problems ever seemed to appear, never solutions. It was best for him to avoid you. Why the fuck did he drag you out here? Horrible idea.
"Your family isn't scum. Where the fuck did you get that from?" Your face was screwed up in genuine rage. "I-"
"Y/N, fuckin’ leave it."
His face had hardened completely now. He'd snapped at you. His voice hadn't raised, it was just the power he spat his order out with. You held up your hands in mock surrender, pointedly taking a cigarette from his front pocket and light it silently, not saying a word.
"Why are you so bothered, anyways?" He asked, breaking the silence like you knew he would. John always had to ask questions.
"Fuck off with that, John. I'm not in the mood."
"What do you mean?" He looked completely lost.
"We nearly had sex. Just sex, nothing else right?"
John remained silent.
"Would it be the worst thing in the world?" You asked, your voice wavering. It was hard enough to get the words out, let alone imagine the response.
"You're far too wasted to chat about this, love."
"John, I’m not-"
"I'm serious. You're fucking mashed like my brothers aren't you? Like all those other fuckers in there." He sounded genuinely angry. In the glow of the sunset he looked so much younger, so hurt and lonely. Why hadn't you noticed before?
He turned to you, eyes widened and shocked at his own outburst. "You're not the only one gone yeah? Ignore me, I'm fucked, sorry."
You reached out your hand and linked your fingers through his in silence, the warm evening wind ruffling your hair and dress, blocked from your skin by John's suit jacket which was wrapped around your shoulders. Not that anyone would notice or care. As long as Ada wasn't with you, you could disappear for hours without any alarm. There you sat in the tranquil last few moments of the day, your hand linked with John's, both beyond tipsy. You weren’t thinking properly but it felt right. You felt safe. You didn't want to have to return to the chaos of the party, to have to catch up on who your friends were currently trying to screw. None of that seemed to matter anymore.
Was it too much to ask for something to be simple? Maybe you didn't have to fuck him. Maybe just these small moments were enough. You laughed at the thought when it crossed your mind; neither you nor John were known for consistency or stability in relationships, you being admittedly rather inexperienced, only having been with a few men, and he had his fair share of escapades. But he was just so different. You wouldn't admit that he'd gotten your attention in any way than purely sexually (which surprised you to admit) and for fun, but you genuinely enjoyed his presence.
He was right though. It wasn't a good idea at all to hook up. There was far too much baggage for both of you to make it worth it.
Just once?
You glanced over at John. He rolled his eyes at you, but the edges of his lips were slightly upturned, his dimples faintly peeking through his defined cheeks.
Just once couldn't hurt.
***
The sky was streaked with shades of gold, amber and blood. John could feel the friction from your knee barely knocking against his, the pressure putting him on edge. In fairness, he had drunk heavily, and that's what happens when you let your guard down around beautiful women. He couldn't believe you had told him you wanted to have sex with him still. He'd chalked the whole situation down to a drunken mistake that would have progressed into a far more significant drunken mistake. Ada would never forgive him if he went for another of her mates. Especially Y/N. No matter if he said that Y/N could be different, that you wasn't just another conquest. But who'd believe him?
Far better to keep his mouth shut.
Far better to play safe.
As you were called back to the party by the gaggle of girls John vaguely recognised from hanging off the arms of other blinders, he realised (despite his state) that you were right. Having sex with you wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. In fact, it might be one of the best.
Just once?
He watched your figure disappear back into the marquee, waiting for you to turn back and look for him. You do. He would have done the same if it was him.
Maybe just once wouldn't hurt.
***
to be continued!
