ybc musical costume in-depth analysis! 💥🎸🎱

hi! I'm jordan, the costume designer (and also an actor and co-writer) of "the young blood chronicles" musical! i posted this on instagram, but i thought it might be cool to post it here too!

my initial role in “the young blood chronicles” musical was costume design, which, as a fashion enthusiast, i was incredibly excited about. i spent about a month curating a huge pinterest board collection and creating individual moodboards. the show takes place in 2013, but i wanted to take inspiration from both pre and post-hiatus fall out boy looks! here’s an in-depth look :’)

patrick’s main inspo was his “soul punk” era, which lives distinctly in the hiatus. i wanted something that would remind us that years had passed since the last time the band had made music together; something cool and trendy, but a little too dressed up for a long day in the studio. even when not onstage, ybc patrick is performing. clothes can give you power and he knows that. the yellow sunglasses were our way of getting around patrick’s glowing yellow eyes from the music videos, but i really love how it makes it seem like he has a mask on. it makes the end of “miss missing you” even more heartbreaking.

pete’s main inspo came from both his early clandestine drops as well as his more androgynous looks (both pre & post-hiatus). pete really cares about fashion, but he still has a chill la vibe. 2013 pete could often veer more edgy, but i chose to move in a different direction in order to better distinguish pete and patrick’s styles. unless you’re a vixen or patrick, you don’t get a leather jacket! sorry pete! to me, pete’s fashion has always felt so current while still being forward-thinking. ybc pete’s outfit could be from 2006 or 2024 and that was very purposeful!

andy’s looks are mostly pulled from more recent years, but band tees never go out of style. the mesh top under the tee alludes to his tattoos, which make up the extent of his stage looks these days since he typically does shows without a shirt on. celia had this mesh top in her closet and i love the colors on her (it’s the only source of color in the heaven outfits!). andy’s outfit is maybe the simplest of the four on paper, but i think it’s sick. it’s laid back, but super specific and grounded. it makes me want to start wearing basketball shorts.

joe’s looks are pulled from both pre-hiatus and early post-hiatus looks! striped sweaters & cargo pants are things he’s worn before, so i'm lucky i had them in my closet (especially since i wasn’t originally joe!). joe, especially in recent years, really likes wearing dark colors onstage, but, similar to how i avoided leather jackets for pete, i wanted to very clearly differentiate the boys from the vixens. any black piece of clothing on any of the boys had to be broken up with a design or pattern. no all black outfits! sorry joe!

the goal with the heaven outfits was to make the exact same outfits in all white. i wanted the exact same silhouettes as before. i’d say we were pretty successful! we got really lucky when it came to finding these costume pieces.

my vixens! these costumes were a lot more nebulous throughout the process. many of the costume pieces came from the actors’ own wardrobes. it was really important to me that each vixen had her own distinct style. baylee’s vixen (whom she named blair) has a more feminine style, her main costume piece being a lacy leotard. she's sweet with an edge. ava’s vixen is second-in-command & her outfit really screams that. the lingerie top is so killer. alexa’s vixen is almost a mix of baylee’s & ava’s in terms of style. the outfit is sweet, but edgy with the ripped tights & lingerie-style top. lauren’s vixen is a little more utilitarian, actually dressed in a way that makes sense for kidnapping four people. she’s more sporty than the others, but her combat boots are incredibly threatening. hbic is all that and more. her outfit is simple, but powerful. she is terrifying.

tiffany had to feel a bit like an outsider. she’s wearing the vixen clothes, but her jacket has some color on it. it’s a little too big on her. the other vixens really live in & embody their clothes, but for tiffany, it's a bit more like a costume.

here’s how i describe the angels: 1) the hottest girls at the ren faire & 2) like that picture of the angel guiding the two kids that every latine family has in their house. they almost feel out of place; so incredibly fluid in a show that is mostly made up of harsh lines. texture and layers were really the name of the game here, but the angels still have an edge to them. to quote fob: “…angels choking on their halos, get them drunk on rose water. see how dirty i can get them, pullin' out their fragile teeth & clip their tiny wings.”

+ i made pete’s bass machete and tiffany’s/joe’s guitar axe! i don’t have much to say about them, but i loved getting to utilize my cosplay foam skills.

this was my first time ever costuming a show and it was such a dream. the entire cast was so willing to experiment with me and it was such a joy to revisit aspects of 2013 fashion, which i remember from my preteen years, but never got to truly participate in! :’)

Me adding my two cents is probably not gonna do much, but here I go, I guess:

I want to preface this with saying that Wilbur's content and Lovejoy have been incredibly important to me and I've put a lot of time, effort and money into supporting Lovejoy especially. So finding out about this, before finding out about the details, I had originally reacted with incredulous derision of twitter stans. And then erring on the side of caution about how things developed.

At this point there's almost no question that it's Wilbur, for the simple reason that Shubble would have cleared up his name if it wasn't. There's no way she would throw someone innocent under the bus, if she knew somebody else was guilty. Additionally, not a single person in Wilbur's surroundings has disputed any claims and have only narrowed it down further towards Wilbur. At this point it is incredibly unlikely she is talking about anybody else.

I do want to take a moment to comdemn those (mostly on twitter) who used this opportunity to dig into both Shubble and Wilbur's private lives, trying to construct a narrative of her abuse and in some cases going so far as doxxing Wilbur. It is entirely possible to support Shelby and condemn her abuser, without invading their privacy and endangering people's lives. Shelby's goal was to warn people and to make them more aware of the signs of abuse. As well as make it as clear as possible, who she's talking about without saying who it is directly, for a meriad of possible reasons. It was not an invitation to write abuse fanfiction about her private life.

That being said, the way I will feel about this in the long run will depend heavily on how Wilbur deals with this situation. I will definitely distance myself either way (slowly but surely), but his reaction to this will influence how I will act moving forward.

Should he stay silent or respond with insincerity/derision/defensiveness/etc., then that's it for me. Fuck him.

But should he come forward, own up to it, apologize and prove that he is working on himself, then I might be able to find it in myself to give him a second chance over time. I just don't believe that doing bad things makes you irredeemable forever and ever and ever.

We know for a fact that Wilbur has been struggling with mental health problems for most of his teen and adult life and from his solo music we are also aware that he is incredibly aware of the fact that he is the problem in his relationships. Expressing dark thoughts in music, does not automatically mean somebody is abusive. In fact, creating dark art is an excellent way to deal with harmful thoughts and impulses. I have literally never taken his lyrics to mean that.

However, his lyrics in YCGMA and MSR have always been incredibly autobiographical and do show that he is acutely aware that he's the unhealthy element in his unhealthy relationships.

We also know directly from him, that he has distanced himself from most of his social circle and sought out therapy as recently as 2 weeks ago in an effort to improve his mental health.

This does not excuse his actions whatsoever. Mentally ill people are still responsible for the harm that they cause and Shelby is unbelievably brave to tell their story. I hope they finds peace, I hope she has all the support she could ever need and I hope she has achieved her goal of making people more aware of how people end up in situations like this. She is an inspiration for standing up for herself like this.

But I also think that, should Wilbur come forward, admit to his wrongdoings and prove over time that he is working on becoming a better person, friend and partner, that he does not have to be shunned forever and ever and ever. He has a long life in front of him and I hope both for him and all his future friends and partners that he manages to find a healthy, happy way of living. This can happen, even while he never bothers Shelby, or the other people he hurt, again.

This is a best case scenario. I do think he is allowed to take some time to formulate a response. A hasty response to situations like this have never helped anyone ever, neither the victim, nor the accused. Taking his time to come to terms with the situation, which surely came as a shock, and to really think about how he wants to deal with this situation is much better than him writing a twitlonger as soon as he finds out.

Either way, I will distance myself from him and Lovejoy, slowly but surely. I won't get rid of the merch clothing I own because it was quite expensive and throwing it away is a waste of perfectly good clothing, but I won't find the joy I once felt wearing them. (I am salty about me being gone from home for a few months and having ordered Lovejoy merch, which had been waiting for me for weeks and then finding out about this literally the day I travelled back. It definitely felt weird as hell to unpack that stupid NORMAL longsleeve with his fucking face on it, while being hurt and confused and angry.)

Listening to Lovejoy's music, likewise, will never feel as euphoric as it once did, even if I go back to it. Which really sucks cuz they genuinly hit my sweet spot in music taste. YCGMA and SISV specifically, have been so, so important to me and removing them from my listening rotation i going to Hurt.

Interestingly, I don't feel quite as terrible as last time I had to suddenly cut a content creator out of my life. So I guess practice makes perfect lmao.

I don't know if me writing and posting this had any point. I guess I just wanted to get it off my chest and maybe it resonates with somebody.

Anyway, take care of yourselves. Take it easy and try to focus on other things, if this hit you hard (ideally offline). Try to meet with friends, maybe play some boardgames (or video games), go for a walk,read a book, have a coffee with a loved one. There's joy in the world, despite it all.

"Now I've had the time of my life No, I never felt like this before Yes, I swear it's the truth And I owe it all to you"

This is a very, very special drawing for me. ✨

In September of last year, I watched Dancing With The Stars' "Step Into the Movies" special again, at the end of which they recreate "The Time of My Life" scene from Dirty Dancing. And that sent me on a nostalgia trip back to my high school theater days over a decade ago now, where the drama club accepted my idea to do a "Time of Our Lives" theme, and a performance for that song à la Glee. Mind you, I was mainly the stage manager/techie sort, but I did some scenes for the showcases, and participated in this song with my then-boyfriend, along with two other couples.

And while we were hanging out in the green room backstage, a friend took some pictures of us. Including the one that directly inspired this drawing of Webby + Lena.

This started out as a memory remix of that photo, after watching the DWTS special, because I thought these two lovebirds would be really cute subjects for it.

But once I got going, it turned into a love letter, for many things.

As part of the remix aspect of it, I now picture myself in Lena's spot in the photo, getting to have the short hair I wish I had had back then, and getting to wear a suit and tie! (Yes, in the original photo, I am wearing the dress and red bow Webby's sporting here, and I have long hair. 🙈 Though I will say here that the little heart necklace she's wearing is exactly like the one I had, too! :)) Drawing this was really cathartic for my nonbinary self. 💜

And as for Webby, in this remix, she represents someone that, in retrospect, I wish I had shared this moment with from back then. In many ways, she really was the Webby to my Lena. 💜💖💝

(Literally) beyond the subjects of this though, this is indeed very much a love letter to a lot of things, to passions. The background is pretty much a replica of the drama classroom wall we were in front of for the photo, at least as far as layout goes, with a few direct recreations of things that were on the wall and on the table there. Everything else was me being a passionate (theatre) nerd.

(Details (many details) of said nerdiness and alternate versions below the cut!)

I've included un-blurred and background-only versions (and a version with drop shadow lines on the girls, because why not? it's a cool effect!) below, but I just want to point out the details, because I'm so dang proud of this.

The posters/programs for The Phantom Blot of the Opera, Featherspray, Chickago, and My Fair Dewey are obvious duck-parody references to their real-world counterparts (with the latter being the exact poster they use in DuckTales, in Dewey's dream in "Nightmare on Killmotor Hill!" So thanks, Dewey! 😂). The Featherspray one was also included because Hairspray was one of the shows we did in high school! And lemme just say, creating theater posters is really fun!!

The MJ the Musical poster and the half-shown Notre Dame de Paris "Duckbill" right behind Lena's head are particularly special to me, since they (along with Phantom) are my favorite musicals, and getting to draw those two was especially fun!

The L'Orange Theater poster in the top-right is a bunch of duck easter eggs in one - the L'Orange Theater is mentioned and seen in the very first episode of DuckTales 1987, and of course, there's Aquarioon from DT17! Looks like it toured in Duckburg a long time ago. 😉

And the sheet music is the DuckTales theme! (Or at least the left side of it :P)

The "Congrats" card, calendar (the whale for upper half was my own touch), folder, page of random backstage stuff behind Lena's head (which includes little Star Trek and Darkwing Duck references), and golden "Theatre" card (with my old director's favorite quote) are directly from the photo (or at least based on what I could see through its blurriness 😝), as is the very edge of a cast photo in the upper-right. The purple note (totally not with any secret messages whaaaaat) below that, the certificate of excellence, and the little pride heart pins everywhere are little garnishes/dedications. 😊

The stage/theater diagram below the certificate is really cool, because that's a direct recreation (+ another hidden message) of a project a friend and I did for stagecraft back in our freshman year - I was even able to copy my own handwriting for the labels! 😄😂

The "Time of Our Lives" poster is a reference to the showcase I mentioned above that inspired all this, though the real-life poster looked very different, from what I remember.

The green bag below is sorta a nod to the secret pal exchanges we used to do during shows. 😉

And finally:

The Glittering Goldie show poster is me just having an absolute blast drawing her once again and coming up with something for her Blackjack days! And bonus - I'll be posting a gradient-only version of Goldie tomorrow! Really happy with how she turned out!

And the "All the World's a Stage" poster is me combining all of my theatre nerdiness with my passion for space and a good pun! 😁

ANYWAY...

I learned a lot with this drawing, about creating and about myself.

And I just had so, so much fun with it - it was all love, all passion, all happiness for this one. 💜💖💝

Just watched Mutant Mayhem, here are my thoughts!

Overall: Yes, very good I suggest everyone watch it when they can or I will break your knees :)

I’m going to end up rambling far too much unless I split this properly, so I’m going to break it down into sections starting from what I believe is most important in a movie.

This post is still going to be a mess ngl

Story: 8/10

The story is actually very good! It was paced very well and ended in a very touching way. No character interactions or plot beats felt forced or cliché, and no forced identity politics which is always a plus.

The action scenes - of course they were amazing. Paired with the stellar animation, each action scene was brilliantly directed and choreographed. The start shows the turtles’ origin story is similar to most of the iterations with its own unique factors - in this case the ooze was created by Baxter Stockman.

The conflict of the plot was well written, the final act was great and ends with a hopeful and satisfying ending (there is a mid credit scene that teases something big for the series though!).

If it’s any consolation, it’s also very friendly to new fans of TMNT - I went with someone who has not seen any TMNT media before and they really liked it and understood it easily.

Characters: 9/10

Needless to say, all the characters were very well done. Despite its run time and large cast, each one feels grounded with their own unique personality.

For starters: the four main boys! They were done brilliantly - Mikey being hopeful and optimistic whilst naturally being empathetic, Raph channeling chaotic good energy with his iconic rage personality not being over the top, Donnie being a geek in the best way possible, and Leo trying to be a good leader and anxious, always looking out for his brothers but not a complete teachers pet. All very likeable, and I can’t wait to see them in the series!

Splinter: probably the best since 2003! Openly caring of his sons and worries a great deal about how humans will perceive them. Has his own trauma from his experience with humans so he tries to protect his sons by isolating them completely, but eventually realises that his own view of humans should not affect his son’s happiness and lets them fulfil their dream of trying to be accepted by humans even if he will never like humanity himself. Peak character development, 10/10.

Villain/s: all of them felt fleshed out and I look forward to seeing them in the series! Posed their own genuine threats with varying levels of morals. Again, all were fleshed out quite well and played a role in the story.

April: honestly, she didn’t have too much in it compared to the others but does play a key role in the final act and the ending itself. An interesting iteration of April, curious to see more of her.

Animation: 10000000/10

It was brilliant. What else can I say? Though inspired by Spider-verse it is its own style which is amazing to look at. It thrives in action scenes and landscapes. Another groundbreaking style that I hope to see influence others.

Music: 8/10

It slaps. Almost all of them I will be playing for the next week or so. The soundtracks really set the mood beautifully, especially the sombre track. Paired with the animation - ugh - chefs kiss

Overall Rating: 8/10

I am usually very very harsh with films, so for me to rate anything above a seven is basically unheard of. Probably my favourite movie of 2023, and my favourite TMNT movie. 2003 only just beats it overall but that’s mostly because I’ve known it for longer - who knows, a few more rewatches and it might overtake.

“Does it taste good?” Seokmin asks you curiously, turning his head to watch you take a bite of the ice cream.

Immediately, the sweetness of flavours melts on your tastebuds, your eyes growing wide from the sudden explosion of flavours in your mouth, probably akin to that of a burst of confetti exploding. With a satisfied grin, you give him an exciting nod and offer him a bite as well.

“Gosh, it’s so sweet,” You tell him as he takes a bite of it himself, his eyes widening just like yours.

A dramatic expression of delight spreads across his face and you can’t help but giggle at his reaction. Seokmin's eyes twinkle with amusement as he savours the taste of the ice cream, even surprised himself by how sweet it was. You watch as his lips curl into a proud grin.

He playfully nudges your shoulder. “See? I know just the right flavour combinations with just a single glance.”

You could only roll your eyes. “You’re going to trigger my sweet tooth.”

Seokmin's laughter fills the air, mingling with the surrounding joyful ambiance of the amusement park. "Well, consider me an accomplice to your sweet tooth cravings, sunshine," he muses teasingly, gently wrapping an arm around you and pulling you closer to him, taking a bite of his own ice cream cone. “How about some churros next?”

“That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard leave your mouth this entire day,” You point out, pausing for a moment𑁋maybe your sweet tooth has officially been awakened. “but... churros sound good.”

The two of you stroll hand-in-hand down the busy boardwalk of the amusement park as the sounds of excited chatter, the faint melodies of the carousel music, and even the occasional distant screaming of people riding on those thrilling rollercoasters travel around. Since the day had reached evening, with the sky dark and the air fresh, the colourful lights of the park highlighting the various attractions create a bright beacon that illuminate the skies above. The atmosphere felt enchanting, even magical, as if it came straight out of a fairytale.

As the two of you feast on your ice cream and venture deeper into the amusement park, you both take a stop in front of the large carousel, its bright golden lights radiating like the sun. The horses on the carousel had been decorated with vibrant colours and intricate designs, and they stand tall and proud while patiently waiting for their next riders.

Seokmin leads you to a nearby bench and you both settle down next to each other. From behind, the carousel begins to spin, its lighthearted music along with the excited laughter of children filling the air between the two of you. The horses rise and fall gracefully, moving harmoniously with the whimsical melody of the music. The lights from the carousel flash a kaleidoscope of colours that cast a mesmerising glow right beneath your feet.

“Sunshine?”

“Hm?” You turn to him with curious eyes.

Seokmin only giggles and leans in a bit, letting a finger caress away some ice cream that had landed at the corner of your lips. He pulls back with a proud grin, allowing his eyes admire you for a few moments.

“Pretty,” he mutters. “Have I told you how pretty you are today?”

“I think it’s the... fifth time today?” You question, chuckling to the thought. “One when we woke up in the morning, one before work, one when you picked me up, uh, one before the date, and... right now.”

Seokmin tilts his head as if in suspicion. "Only five times? Hmm, I must be slacking today,” He leans his back on the bench. “I'll have to make up for it later then."

You quirk up an eyebrow. "Is that a promise?"

He just smiles. “For you? Always.”

Once you both have finished your ice cream cones, you lean your head on Seokmin’s shoulder comfortably, sneaking your way to interlock your hand with his on top of your thigh. A comfortable silence weaves itself together as you take the moment to bask in your boyfriend’s warmth right next to you.

“Okay, so we have two more hours to spare before the park closes,” Seokmin begins, making you bring your head back up in thought. “What attractions are left?”

“Hmm.” You look around the area, knowing that you both have at least touched almost everything. “I think... There’s the ferris wheel over there, and...”

“The haunted house?” Seokmin adds in, his words making you peer helplessly in his direction. Plus, the ferris wheel was reserved for later.

You swallow nervously at the mention of it. Haunted houses... have never been your thing, especially after a bad experience with one when you were younger. You've always been easily spooked (and Seokmin too), and the idea of navigating through a dark, eerie home filled with surprises and jumpscares doesn't exactly appeal to you at all and never has.

But at the same time, you had Seokmin with you to protect you... hopefully, maybe. Though quite the scaredy cat himself, maybe going into one wasn’t that bad of idea at the moment, and there really wasn’t anywhere else in mind. Gosh, you can’t believe you were thinking this.

Seokmin notices your apprehension. “Or we can just go to the ferris𑁋”

“Wait.” You fully sit up, still not letting go of Seokmin’s hand. As you meet gazes with his, you notice the flicker of worry in his face. “We can... we can go in one.”

His eyes widen in surprise. “Really?”

“Yeah, I mean...” You let the corner of your lips curl into a smirk. “It can make up for all the rollercoaster rides you didn’t want to go on.”

“Hey!” Seokmin pouts, gasping aloud as if you’ve just told his darkest secret. “You are absolutely crazy for wanting go on those.”

“Okay, how about the ferris wheel?” You ask him, lifting a curious brow. “It still goes up in the air.”

Seokmin only continues to give you that puppy-like pout. Okay, yes, he is admittedly (very) afraid of heights and rollercoasters. But being on the ferris wheel... it was different for him. Rollercoasters run fast at high speeds, while ferris wheels don’t. And on top of all that, there was something really special he has always wanted to do with you on the ferris wheel, even if it meant facing his fear.

“How about this? We go through the haunted house, then after that, we go to the ferris wheel, and then we can buy some churros for the ride home?” he asks you.

You think for a moment, letting his words linger in the air, before tightening your grip on his hand.

“It’s a deal.”

“Seok, it’s too dark inside!”

“Here... Grab my hand. Okay, here. Don’t let go, okay?”

You give a nod. It was funny how you can also sense your boyfriend’s hesitation as well, and you almost want to bring up that this entire thing was probably a bad idea. But the next thing you know, you find your eyes squinting nearly shut as Seokmin begins to take baby steps inside the haunted house, with your hands having a death grip on each other.

As you both step into the haunted house together, the darkness quickly takes over your vision, and you feel your heart starting to race. The sound of eerie music fills the air, setting up the unsettling atmosphere and only making your anxiety grow. The flickering lights cast eerie shadows on the walls, which only made it difficult to even see what was in front of you.

You cling to Seokmin's hand tightly as you both slowly but surely travel throughout the house. Every creak, every distant whisper, sends shivers down your spine, and you can feel your heartbeat quickening with each one.

As ghostly figures pop out from hidden corners and animatronic creatures shriek and lunge towards you, each scare makes you and Seokmin flinch and squeal together, but he manages to keep a protective arm around you the entire time.

The two of you find yourselves entering into a particularly dark hallway before a sudden scream behind a door causes you to shriek and Seokmin to shriek even louder, immediately prompting him to bring you into his embrace. He wraps his arms around you and holds you close, letting you bury your face on his shoulder.

“It’s okay, sunshine.” Seokmin rubs comforting circles on your back. Even with you pressed against him, you can also feel the fast racing of his own heart from the jumpscares. “We’re almost there. I see the exit.”

You take a deep breath, opening one eye as Seokmin guides through the remaining part of the haunted house. Luckily, there were no more jumpscares nearing the end, and once you open the door and burst outside, you jump back into your boyfriend’s arms.

Seokmin lets out a sigh of relief. He holds you tightly, relinquishing the feeling of your warmth and the way your the beating of your heart starts to steady against his chest.

“I absolutely hated that,” You mumble against his chest. “I don’t ever want to do that again.”

You feel the laughter bubbling up in his chest, feeling his lips meet the top of your head reassuringly.

“No more, sunshine, don’t worry.”

“Can we go to the ferris wheel now?”

His eyes seem to brighten at your words, a mix of excitement and relief shining through his pupils. He loosens his hold on you slightly, his arms still securely wrapped around your waist, and nods eagerly.

The ferris wheel... is a bit higher than Seokmin thought.

You, on the other hand, couldn’t help the excitement as the line slowly began to dissipate, while Seokmin continuously held a blank stare upwards, watching the cabins rise and fall, along with noticing the bright smiles on the faces of children and other couples together.

As you both near the front of the line, Seokmin takes a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. You sense his uneasiness from the way his grip is especially tight in yours, so you squeeze his hand reassuringly, urging him to look in your direction.

“We’ll be okay, Seok, just hold my hand.”

Seokmin turns to you, his eyes meeting yours, and he offers a small smile. "I know," His voice is filled with a mix of nervousness and determination. "I trust you."

You return his smile, feeling a rush of warmth spread through you. The line slowly moves forward, and before you know it, it's your turn to step into one of the cabins. Seokmin takes a deep breath and cautiously follows you inside, his legs turning into a wobbly wreck, his hand never leaving yours.

He tenses up as the park worker takes their spot behind the control panel, pressing the button and making the ferris wheel do a sudden jerk, which makes Seokmin hold onto his seat for dear life.

As the ferris wheel begins to ascend, you feel a sense of calmness wash over you. The view from up above is breathtaking𑁋the entire amusement park sprawls out before your eyes, the vibrant lights illuminating the night sky as the cool breeze caresses against your skin. You feel like you were high enough to touch the clouds.

You glance at Seokmin, noticing the mixture of emotions playing on his face as he slowly leans over to take in the surroundings for himself.

Then when the ferris wheel suddenly stops, he is quick to brace himself against you.

“Why... Why did it stop? We’re not stuck, are we?” He cradles his body against your side, clinging an arm around yours.

"I think... It's just a momentary pause. Sometimes they stop the ferris wheel to let people on or off," You explain to him, running a soothing hand through his hair. "We'll be moving again soon."

Ever so slightly, his grip loosens just a tiny bit. It only takes a few more long minutes of waiting before the ferris wheel begins to move again, and you feel Seokmin's tension ease as the cabins slowly ascend higher into the night sky, and you hear a tiny mutter of wow escaping his lips.

Gradually, you notice Seokmin's grip on your arm loosening even more, his fingers intertwining with yours instead. His tense expression gives way to a sense of awe as he takes in the picturesque view of the amusement park from the ferris wheel. The anxiety that had gripped him just moments earlier seemed to disappear with each passing moment.

Once the cabin reaches the peak, the ferris wheel comes to a gentle halt, and you take the opportunity to gaze out into the vast land below.

“This is so beautiful!” You exclaim and take your phone out, snapping a few pictures of the park, before returning to your spot next to Seokmin. “Here, Seokie, let’s take a picture together.”

Seokmin adjusts himself, getting closer to you in the small cabin. You hold up your phone, making sure to capture both of your smiling faces and the stunning view behind you. Despite still being suspended in the air, Seokmin tries his best to relax, his arms wrapping around your waist as he leans in a bit closer to you, posing with his lips pressing sweetly against your cheek.

You can't help but blush to your face as you feel his soft lips against your skin, and you snap a few pictures, ensuring that the moment is captured forever. With a satisfied smile, you lower your phone to scroll through all the photos.

“We look so cute in these, don’t we?” You ask him.

As you continue to swipe through the photos, Seokmin lets his gaze travel back upwards to your face, taking note of the blooming smile at the corners of your lips, the way your eyes seem to flicker like the stars in the sky above. You just look so beautiful, so ethereal, and the thought of you never fails to make his heart flutter with adoration and pure love.

“See, this one is lockscreen material,” You show him one of the pictures you took together in front of the carousel. “Would it be weird if we had matching lock𑁋”

You suddenly feel Seokmin’s soft lips press against yours tenderly, and you feel all of your limbs grow limp in an instant as the world around you fades away. It's a sweet, gentle kiss, filled with all the love that had finally come to pour out of his heart from the entirety of the day, surrounded by the magical ambiance of the amusement park. His hands come to snake around your waist and pull you even closer to him, and you bring a hand to cling onto the sleeves of his shirt. And as cheesy as it sounds, he had been waiting for this exact moment for a torturously long time.

When you finally pull apart, your eyes meet, and you find a sparkling fuse of love, happiness, and contentment reflected in Seokmin's gaze. His hand cups your cheek, his thumb caressing lightly against your skin.

“Sunshine, how do you manage to make me fall in love with you all over again every single day?” He asks you in a way as if you already knew the answer but just wasn’t telling him.

But coming to think of it, you don’t exactly know the answer to that. It wasn’t some superpower that you had that bound him to you like a magnet𑁋it was more that over time, Seokmin had taken each step up the staircase to your heart with caution, and in that process, he fell in love with you. And each day that he gets to wake up right next to you, each minute that passes by with the two of you together, you welcome him enter into your heart every single time as he does the same for you.

“Gosh, you are even sweeter than the ice cream we ate earlier,” You mutter, feeling the blush making its way onto your face. You can barely think. “It’s affectionately sickening.”

Seokmin only chuckles. “Can’t help it love, you’re just so cute!”

You can barely utter out a response as the ferris wheel does a sudden jerk and you land directly in Seokmin’s arms, your giggles flying out into the late night air as the cabin begins to do its descend back down to the ground.

When you both exit out of the cabin together, your hands instinctively find each other as you traverse back into the heart of the amusement park. It’s become noticeably emptier as the closing time nears.

Seokmin turns towards you, and you swear his smile is brighter than any of the lights surrounding you both. “What do you say about getting those churros before we head back home?”

You could only nod, because in what world can you say no to churros and endless love from your boyfriend?

“I say that is an amazing offer.”

PURRGATORY Pt 1/3:

Just today, my submittion, elijah from purrgatory, was eliminated. Beaten by just 1% from 3.5k votes, Elh will be moving on. I shouldn't be terribly upset, as that means people have played purrgatory before and remembered it. What I hate is that nobody has ever talked about it. This was a life-changing game to me, 2nd favorite, and to see nobody singing its praises is disheartening. This post is in remembrance of purrgatory, elijah, and how it effected me.

PART ONE: purrgatory, A GAME BY NIV

music to set the mood

purrgatory is a free-to-play point & click visual novel, created by Niv. Following your death, you're sent to purrgatory, a place between Heaven and Hell, and you're able to pass time in an afterlife where nothing really matters. You can meet and talk to its seven inhabitants, kyungsoon, oliver, numa, sean, elijah, natalie & tori, listen to their stories and try to remember your own. Fur-ever's not so bad, right?

The game was originally created during the "I Can't Draw" game jam, by solo developer Niv. Niv has a tumblr, though is largely inactive. From Niv answering a question about inspiration, "The point-and-click style was definitely inspired by early Flash point-and-click games -- I have to point out Daymare Town in particular just because of how similar the art style is. The story and characters come from my love of slice-of-life character-based narratives like Night in the Woods and Undertale. I've also always had a fascination with mazes and wanted to make a game where people just sort of live and hang out in a maze." I'll be talking about the general story, characters, art, and music, while avoiding major spoilers as much as possible. Go ahead and play purrgatory before or after I'm done with this thing, all that matters is you played it. I played through both major endings while inspecting everything, and beat it after 6 hours.

The gameplay of purrgatory revolves around exploring the labyrinth of purrgatory, talking to its inhabitants, and uncovering what led both them and you here. Nearly everything is inspectable, so click everything you see, and you'll most likely be treated to something humorous. This game loves puns, as the title suggests, and you'll be the one making them whether you like it or not. Every character drawing is traced multiple times over, to create a nice wiggling effect. purrgatory is devoid of color, the residents colors the only ones you'll see.

purrgatory is giant, boasting 80 different screens, and you will have to go through each one at some point. It's easy to get lost here, but muscle memory will guide you. You will first meet charon, the River Styx receptionist. Your interaction is brief, but she'll hand you your form to fill, a one-way trip to purrgatory. After you enter your name and select custom pronouns, she'll mention you're the eighth, "over capacity." You'll be directed to enter the portal and have a chance to ask a question, from, "who am i?", "where am i?" and "who are you?" After this, your only choice is to enter the portal to purrgatory.

From here, you'll meet kyungsoon the hyena, a cat, and oliver the mouse in the library. As you explore past the starting area, you'll find numa the snail in the flower garden, sean the snake and elijah the pangolin in the writing corner, natalie the moth in the apartment, and tori the owl in the station. Each has their reason for being here, and it's up to you to help them. The personalities of these people are what make this game, as each is written realistically and sympathetically. numa is meek and has trouble controlling her emotions, sean died during his happiest days and considers most of his life wasted, and kyungsoon was slothful during her life and never exerted her efforts anywhere. These are all things they tell you as you help them with what little goals they create for themselves in purrgatory.

Despite the heavy subject matter, purrgatory is inserted with lots of funny scenes and dialogue from every character. kyungsoon will make sarcastic remarks at your expense while not showing any strong emotion, sean has a sense of humor entwined with lots of internet and ruanch, and numa has many intense scenes of frustration that got me many times. Speaking of the characters, purrgatory consists of a largely LGBT+ cast! From Niv, "Don’t worry about misinterpreting! Every story is a collaboration between creator and reader, after all, so I expect nothing less than people creating their own headcanons. That being said, in MY head, numa and kyungsoon are lesbians, sean is gay, oliver and tori are bi, natalie is aroace, and kyungsoon is of course trans..."

On music and art: purrgatory has a wonderful soundtrack and sound design! With the low-effort look of the world, the music pairs excellently to the areas and scenes, my favorites being "the warehouse" and "lights out." There are special tracks in there as well, like a rendition of "Fly Me to the Moon" done with meows and a song composed by sean (do not look this up, will spoil). Exploring purrgatory, you'll find the various characters in many activities, such as standing around, sleeping, and laying on the floor. Every character not-still conveys so much emotion, despite looking like this:

There are a few endings, but only two major ones, which I will call "ghost end" and "feline fine." ghost end is the worst ending. While you were in purrgatory, you did not get to know anyone there, and yet for some reason, you're spared. This is the first ending I got. feline fine is the good ending. You remembered your past and helped everyone, and through comradery, found color.

"purrgatory" is an amazing game, which I wholeheartedly recommend. It's free on Steam right now. Please play it. My favorite character was elijah :3

I applaud the dedication, and I very much hope that people are convinced to check the game out. I know I'm definitely going to read through this more thoroughly later and maybe check out the game.

HEARTSTEEL KAYN IN NYLON CHINA INTERVIEW 💜

"I have an alter-ego. He has his own name, Rhaast." Speaking of the other self in his body, Kayn suddenly calmed down. "I use the third person to make it easier for you to understand. In my opinion, I am him and he is me. He is completely unleashed, is the most original version of me. He led me to break away from all constraints, including my own complicated thoughts, and just immerse myself in the present and experience everything." Kayn talked about Rhaast calmly, and everyone else stopped what they were doing. K'Sante put down his tablet, and Ezreal stops himself from petting Sett's ear. "For an artist, if you can have a completely isolated space, where you can avoid all distractions and don't even have to think too much, but just exist purely, that kind of freedom can inspire the most beautiful things. Do Authentic creations. Only Rhaast can take me there. He can make me forget other people's expectations and constraints, and even forget myself. He is me, but he can make me forget "me".” Kayn needs to close himself off and create art in company of Rhaast. But not everyone can accept this creative model. What they see is Kayn's absence again and again during rehearsals, and conflicts with his old teammates that occur almost every day. So Kayn finally left the previous band, taking with him the music that came from his heart. Everyone who heard them knew how wonderful those songs were, but as punishment for the world, Kayn refused to release them to the public. "Those who cannot appreciate the existence of Rhaast cannot understand the music we created together." Until Aphelios discovered them.

▶ Other curiosities about Kayn in the interview:

The first thing Kayn does before the interview is say Hello to Akali and tell her that he is also in Nylon, while waving at the camera.

Kayn was surprised to learn that Yone wanted to live with the band.

His favorite food is macaroni and cheese, and potato chips with toppings.

He followed Aphelios' idea of putting the food in the oven at high temperature for twice as long, which caused a fire and K'Sante had to call the fire department.

Kayn, wants to try spicy food in Hunan, Jiangxi, and Sichuan.

He wants to see Pandas

HELLO SPINOFF NATION!

I'm Micheal, and I'm super excited to announce my very first OFF FANGAME: WHAT

WHAT is a small fangame about Zone Umbra, a newborn world created by a being only known as The Nameless One. You play as Judas, a young doctor, who's just trying to get back to work. Can you save your family and confront the Mad God? What kind of trials oppose your kind fellowship? Will there be cake at the Birthday Party??

It's still crazy to me that these are actual screenshots I took of an actual game that I made with my own two hands!

These teaser images are subject to change, of course, but WHAT is about 3/4ths of the way done! Hopefully soon, WHAT can put a smile on your face, or maybe some other hideous expression.

In all seriousness, WHAT is just a small project I undertook to learn the basics of RPGM2K3. Needless to say, I was hooked! I had no idea how much fun making and designing games would be.

WHAT uses preexisting original characters, and has graphics, music, and sound effects graciously loaned from the files of Sincere Deceit. In fact, the original project file for WHAT was literally just a gutted copy of Sindec I had just lying around my computer... Needless to say, without SinDec, WHAT would not exist, so I extend a huge thank you to everyone on Sincere Deceit's dev team who kindly allowed me to use their assets. It also has beautiful art and sprites made by the incredibly talented @thequirkysystem , which I am beyond thankful for. Watching their sprites bounce across my screen is endlessly inspiring.

As for content, WHAT is a simple game. I set out with the intention of making something that would cover all of the basics of RPGmaker, so I would one day be able to make an even bigger, cooler OFF fangame. I'd say for a first ever attempt, WHAT is looking pretty decent! I just hope that it doesn't smell too strongly of amateurish charm.

WHAT should be released in the relatively near future. I'd say the game is maybe a little more than halfway done, give or take some time for extra polishing (and any last minute major plot changes, haha), and I'm really looking forward to sharing my work with the community. Once WHAT has been released, I'll be posting a bit of commentary and scrapped content, so if you end up liking the game, you can look forward to that! Then, I'll be moving right along to another project!

hello my lovelies!!!

Alright, so this is something I have been planning for almost a year now. I have always loved fantasy novels and good storylines, and one of the ways I connect with GVF’s music is through the stories and images they are able to depict through music. I couldn’t help myself from creating a universe from it. They’ve said themselves it’s like LOTR! :)) With that being said, through this I am in no way claiming that this is the only message these songs give or that this comes even close, i’m only taking inspiration from these song lyrics and creating a real connected story from it. also, i don’t in any way claim this as original, these characters and storylines are heavily developed from what GVF has already written and inspired by their own personalities; full credit goes to their wonderful music :)

so, my idea is to start writing out some of it here, sharing concepts and ideas, possibly full chapters or in depth character analysis, because I’m still figuring out the story myself! I’m also looking for collaboration, because if this were to get bigger and become an actual full book on the forum, I would need some help lmao😭

Anyways, please feel welcome to leave any feedback/criticisms you may have because this is a work in progress and I want your input! i’ve enjoyed reading so many amazing stories through tumbler and other platforms like ao3, but I’m not as much of a super experienced writer myself. I’ve always enjoyed it, but I’ve never put my work on display like this before, so any help is appreciated!!

Ok so, I've decided to put in a nutshell the ideas I have for DCA (thanks for the encouragement @kazzykatt ). Here we go:

(Warning: this sounds like a pronoun letter quibble because English is not my first language and because I am using a translator)

1) The other side

Based on the musical number from the movie "The Great Showman". In this story, the DCA is one and it is part of some theater presentation, and whose sole purpose is to appear in it and when the play ceases to be famous it will be dismantled. Over the years doing the same thing over and over again the audience has slowly dwindled so it's almost time to end... while Sun wants to continue the show until it's over (because that's the purpose they were for) Moon wants to do something different and break the cycle. It is here that one night after their performance and while the play continues in the background Y/N (who was part of the audience) sneaks behind the scenes to convince them to go with him and create their own original performances and thus they will be able to continue doing what they love without fear of being dismantled one day. Sun obviously objects, taking this as a risky bet with no security, but Moon decides to take control of the situation and take a chance on Y/N in order to escape and get another chance to shine on stage.

2) Strangers like me

Yes, based on the soundtrack from the Tarzan movie. It's basically the dynamics of the relationship between AOI (one of my OC's) and Sundrop, but it can be reinterpreted by replacing my OC with another or with some Y/N that meets the characteristics. As AOI fulfills his assigned work and tries to fit in at the pizzaplex, he is also immensely curious and interested in the DCA, especially little Sundrop who has been nice to him despite the rest of them doing the opposite. Stoic, silent and expressionless AOI enjoys time in the company of someone so vibrant, while Sundrop... is fine.

3) One day out there

AN this one is based on the sundtrack from the Hunchback of Notredame. This is more of a little animation/storyboard that I'm slowly working on on my own. And it is basically the desire of DCA not only to leave the nursery, but also one day to leave the pizzaplex and see all those places that children tell them about, see with their own eyes the landscapes that appear in books and see first-hand where they come and where the people who visit them every day go.

4) Not in the same way

This is an AU focused on the relationship of Y/N and the DCA but this relationship has two sides: while the DCA is "head over heels in love with us", Y/N cares for them, but not in the same way.

DCA's point of view of the relationship is inspired by the song "Mr. Chu". They both have feelings for the human who has been working in maintenance for years. While Sundrop is more apparent, Moondrop tries to keep her feelings to herself, but they both take a genuine interest in Y/N.

On the other hand Y/N has a quiet life with a good job that pays well. He (and the entire pizzaplex except DCA himself) knows about the boys' feelings, but in the first instance he doesn't reciprocate in the same way. Despite this, he lets them be and at some point offers them "an opportunity" or to make them change their minds. His point of view is based on the song "Fumes".

[I hope to turn this into an original story one day]

5) Off the train!

This is a ghibli style based AU. In this story we have Y/N, a young opportunistic and optimistic person who has sneaked into a train disguised as a janitor to travel for free. While cleaning the last carriages, he hears someone yelling at a cage. Worried Y/N orders him to leave the place because it is "cleaning time and travelers should not be in this place". After the man leaves the scene, Y/N sees that the animatronic is sitting inside the cage and there is silence, that's when he offers them both to leave the train together and go to the city of robots. The confused boys accept and together with Y/N they embark on a journey of escape, adventure, fun and excitement together. This is an AU more focused on friendship than romance, so you get the idea. [I also wish to turn this into an original children's story one day]

6) La princesa y el dragón

Este es más bien una escena de confort basada en la canción del mismo nombre. En esta los chicos se mantienen junto a Y/N durante uno de esos momentos en los que el corazón duele y te sientes sólo, y mientras demuestran cariño también tratan de hacerte reír con sus palabras y alegorías.

7) Scars to your beautiful (mainly based on the chorus of the song)

Contrary to what you can imagine, in this AU we are the ones in charge of comforting the DCA (which here are two different robots).

After several years the Fazber Entertainment franchise has continued to grow and expand, and its main characters have been updated to meet the new standards. Unfortunately, due to their low popularity, the daycare boys have been left behind, being sold as worthless "collector's items" for the company along with other discontinued bots. Moon is calm about the situation, he knows that they could have been dismantled, so the idea of changing owners doesn't seem so bad to him, more like a change of scenery. On the other hand, Sun is devastated, because he believes that it is because of him that they are where they are, that it is because it is not as pleasant and calm as Moon or with such a beautiful design and appearance as glamrock, or with an impeccable no error history that both have been discontinued. It is here when we as Y/N are in charge of giving them a new opportunity to "live" for the boys and make them understand that although the world has changed that does not mean that they have lost their value, that they are still valuable to their way and that at least in our hearts they are the stars.

8) The artist's workshop

In the past I talked about this idea in this post.

Summary: Y/N a famous recognized artist suffers an accident in his workshop leaving him injured. His boss then forces him to accept help, but since Y/N doesn't usually interact with people much, he ends up buying a couple of animatronics. This pair of robots not only help him with the work and the safety and cleanliness of the workshop, but they also begin to show not only unique personalities, but interest in the arts and works of Y/N himself, giving us the inspiration that we had sought for years. [Yes, I would also like to turn this into an original story]

Notes: although for now everything is sketches of stories and scenes this is what has been rotating in my mind for a long time. In the future I would like to write original stories with my ideas, but if any of these ideas have inspired you, you can use them however you like, modifying or adapting them to your liking, after all, the same idea can be interpreted in different ways.

Introducing Me.

Hi! I'm Rickie the Storyteller! I like making up stories for fun.

I figured that it was probably time to have a proper intro post on here.

Here are a few facts about me:

My real name is Erica. "Rickie" is a nickname. (And I'm a girl.)

My MBTI is INFJ.

My birthday is 15/09 (so I'm a Virgo).

I'm British. And black. And kind of a nerd.

I love to read (I can't choose one favourite book lol. My favourite childhood books were the How to Train Your Dragon series, and I also loved everything by Roald Dahl).

I love movies (particularly Pixar movies. I think my favourite Pixar film is The Incredibles).

Right now, my two favourite shows are Gilmore Girls and BoJack Horseman. And The Boondocks… and I also love Phineas and Ferb (I always have. It’s my comfort show <3 )

I'm a STEM student (mainly computer science, physics and maths). I particularly like science a lot. When I was young, all I wanted was to be a doctor. I got over that once I found out how long you need to stay in school lol.

I hate swearing in real life, but I sometimes include swear words in my stories (only when I feel like the character would lol. It's about getting their personalities right, that's all).

I am a major perfectionist. And a tryhard. Because of that, I get burnt out a lot lol.

I have the most random music taste lol. I like just about everything so long as it sounds nice (my playlists range from old-school hip hop to gospel/rnb to jazz to classical to indie... right now as I'm typing this out, I'm listening to Lizzy McAlpine lol)

I've always loved writing and storytelling since I was a kid. I used to write in my notebooks whenever I could, and make up bedtime stories to entertain my younger sister when we were little kids. I enjoyed creating different worlds, scenarios, characters and personalities with my imagination. Making up stories is my passion and my escape.

I got the idea to start this blog because I type up a lot of stories and store them on my computer. Some of them are long, some of them are short. Most of them aren't finished… But I wanted to give them a space of their own. I wanted to have a platform where I can share my stories with other people who love writing and reading as much as I do. I wanted to connect with other writers and readers who can give me feedback, advice, and support. And I wanted to challenge myself to improve my writing skills and grow as a writer and storyteller.

On here, you'll find various types of stories (and poems, I guess) that I write for fun or for practice. Some of them are short stories that can be read in one sitting. Some of them are longer stories that are divided into chapters or parts. Some of them are based on prompts or requests that I get from you guys. And some of them are just random ideas that pop into my head. I'm here to share with you some of my original stories, characters, and ideas that I hope will inspire you, entertain you, and make you think.

I'm happy to be here, but it was a tough choice to start this blog for a few reasons - the main one being that it takes a lot of courage to share your stories/creations with others. You never know how they will react or what they will think of your work. And like I said before, I'm a perfectionist. I want the things I post to be good. I really hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I enjoy writing them.

I want to push myself and step out of my comfort zone. I want to experiment with different writing styles and genres: YA, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, comedy, mystery, drama, etc. Something for everyone. And if there isn't yet something that suits your taste or mood, eventually I'll try and get it there (I haven't been on here very long lol). I've never written fanfictions before, but I wouldn't mind writing for any specific tv shows/movies/video games in future. I'm open to anything! As long as we aren't talking about anything inappropriate…

I'd also love to interact with you guys more: answer your questions about writing or storytelling or anything else; give feedback on your own stories if you want; share tips and tricks on how to improve your writing skills; or just chat about anything that interests us. I don't just want to write stories that come from my own imagination (although I definitely will do that too). I also want to take your suggestions and prompts. So, if you have an idea for a story that you want to read or hear me tell, just let me know and I'll try to make it happen.

Top 10 Vocaloid Songs for 2023

Hi, im Jakob Cobb and I enjoy a good vocaloid song.

Inspired by a certain someone posting about it monthly, I've decided to compile a top 10 list of my favorite vocaloid songs of the year. There is no rhyme or reason about them and it’s 100% just decided on the fact that I love the song for one reason or another

Without much else to say, I will say that this has been an awesome year of vocaloid music and I hope next year continues to be great.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: 花隈の歌は可愛いし小春六花はマジでうるさい - Gyari Honestly just makes the list purely on the fact it makes me happy that Gyari released two vocaloid songs in the year, which is something I thought they never might do again after they dedicated themselves to vtuber creation and management (?) かまぼこかまほろかまことか - yuro mashima A song im very sad to cut out of the top ten, all due to the fact this song was released on December 30 last year. This song introduced me to yuro mashima, who has released some incredibly good songs in the year (i'm a big fan of the song about brushing your teeth) フランスパンのうた (cover) - world elec. Decided against the inclusion of this song on the top ten over the fact its A) A cover and B) Of an old song at that, regardless, it's really good to hear both OG Teto and New Teto together in a song and making both of them sound good, it also includes a MIDI kazoo solo 少女レイ (remix) - Haru-Ichiban The reason for not including this one in the top ten is due to it being a remix of an already popular vocaloid song, however I feel like it bears to mention how outstanding Haru-Ichiban’s remix is. This song just tickles my brain in the right way and uses the basis of the original to create its own feel サカサカバンバンバスピスピス - Yakomochi The first of three、 absolutely different songs that Yakomochi has become known for. I love the simple silliness this song has an continues to shine on the future works that Yakomochi has made since then 10. TEN: モミアゲヲシャカアゲヲ - Nu^16 Like one of the top comments of the video mentions (by the aptly named @mnmnmmnmmmmmm), the price Nu^16 pays for being a prodigious composer, lyricist and artist/painter is that they can only make joke-y silly songs, despite this and honestly adding to it, the fact that these songs are very funny but still legit good songs really makes it click for me 9. NINE: おどロボ - Umicha The fact that Umicha has only really made three songs in their career (the other two being also amazing), goes to show that some amazing producers have shown up in recent years and that they’ll hopefully continue to make amazing music for the years to come (and as will be shown later, Umicha isn't the only producer with three amazing songs under their belt as their first three) 8. EIGHT:

怪電話 - r-906 This song made me learn about ROSE and POPY, the bandori voice synths, and I think that alone should make this song rank highly. r-906 is a really good producer and they’ve been around for a bit but this song just hits an absolute home run for me with the way its paced and the phone samples 7. SEVEN: 機械少女と三十路OL - Ro2noki Can a song cement a ship in your brain? It can for me! Ro2noki’s awesome song rewired my brain in such a way that Rei and Teto are almost inseparable and are dating, it does help that both their twitter accounts have leaned into it heavily, along with the heaps and heaps of wonderful art of them together 6. SIX: オーバーライド - Yoshida Yasei This became a pretty popular niconico MAD song for some reason, but honestly I get it, everyone enjoys a high energy and tempo song with a really good looking but simple video. Something about this song just works for me wonderfully and it really makes the New Teto sound incredibly nice 5. FIVE:

太陽ポカポカで草 - namigroove Namigroove was a surprise to me this year, they made a bunch of really good songs and my favorite is the one song that sounds like a Vulfpeck song. They're also one of the realest producers out there, their taste in music is insane and so is their choice of voice synths 4. FOUR: 焦燥 - kinoue64 Sometimes certain songs awaken you to understanding that there is so many different things voice synths can do and this is for sure one of them. The Miku shoegaze song is a crazy good song and so is the rest of the album it comes from, if you have the chance do listen to it 3. THREE:

ホントノ - Haraguchi Sasuke It's rare that a commercial producer goes into vocaloid (at least in my experience, it's usually the reverse that happens), but Sasuke has not only knocked it out of the park with the three or so songs he’s made using vocaloid, it only looks like he’s getting started and I look forward to all new songs he’ll make 2. TWO:

ちっちゃな私 - Masarada New Teto release was bound to create new producers for her but no one could’ve anticipated that one would show up and deliver amazing and very distinct songs out of nowhere. Masarada is a producer that I believe will become a household name with some of the greatest vocaloid producers to ever do it if they manage to continue releasing the high quality and chock full of personality songs they’ve managed to release so far, with the song i'm choosing as my top two song of the year being my favorite of them 1. ONE:

KEEP YOUR HEADACHES - Ryo Iogi Teto Hyperpop!!! Not only did this song basically put me on to enjoying hyperpop more but also became one of my most listened to songs of the year period. I hope the Ryo Iogi will eventually make more hyperpop style songs using voice synths (although I will say their grungy Chis-A song is also awesome), because they clearly have a talent for making the style of music and how to blend it with the intricacies of working voice synths

Sooooo thorns!valeries (and by extension the thorns!au which is based around Danny and Val’s interesting dynamic and exploring that!) has been on my mind recently. Still working on the ref but I figured I should go into detail about it.

The idea behind the thorns!au is this:

Valerie gained her ghost hunting gear originally from vlad right? And then later on she got her gear upgraded from technus. Despite her choosing to stay a ghost Hunter, the suit choice and ghost hunting gear were never really hers. This struck me as weird because she seems like the type to do her own thing and fight in a way that fit her.

Blood blossoms got introduced and like,,, never got used again? THEYRE SO INTERESTING THATS A CRIME. In this au, Val finds out about blood blossoms sooner than anyone and incorporates it into her suit. It inspires her to take it upon herself to become a ghost Hunter.

Red Thorn Huntress. *cue music*

Danny goes out of his way to become friends with her after being abandoned by the A-listers. He feels really guilty about Cujo so he tries to make amends.

(In this AU he has his identity under wraps. Not even sam and Tucker know)

This also gives her an excuse to visit the fentons and train under them! Perhaps even to visit Danny more often wink wink-

Thorns! Val’s fighting style is much more martial arts based. She’s not afraid to get up close and personal to fight, which I feel matches her personality. She had a black belt for Pete’s sake!! Blood blossoms are a huge part of her ghost fighting gear too, relying on poisoning and wearing out the enemy over time rather than blast first, ask questions later. The thorns on her gear contain potent poison that is dangerous to ghosts. (However it only mildly affects humans. Think like a mild poison Ivy rash. So it’s not a huge deal if she scratches herself)

Thorns! Val doesn’t fly around on a board, instead on a pair of rollerblade rocket boots to get around. Fenton brand of course! Makes her much more graceful and allows her more control whilst flying at her enemies midair. She can fly as fast as Danny if she tries.

She also has her identity under wraps, at least for a bit. (She’s smart enough to not let it get out otherwise her dad would ground her for life lol)

In this au, she still breaks up with Danny, wanting to keep him safe from her ghost hunting activities. However, they still stay friends even if it’s awkward and Danny feels bummed about it. She doesn’t like,,, up and disappear?? She becomes a part of his small friend group.

as phantom, he creates multiple opportunities to regain her trust and the two actually begin to team up more often, mutually defending the town and acting as equals. Say Danny isn’t able to patrol that night, Val picks up the slack and Amity park becomes a whole lot safer.

Haven’t decided where the idea may go from there but y'know that’s where future art will come in ;)

I started writing this as a fic but a comic might be fun too! (If I can find the time to work on it, that is)

But yeah! That’s basically what I got!

ANTONYMPH (Vylet Ponystep Remix)

So I just released my remix of Antonymph, and you can read my original Tumblr post about the original song here if you want to.

There's a lot of substantial stuff going on under the surface with this remix that can be broken down into two major things:

Breaking out of burnout

Fulfilling a childhood wish

The former of these things is something that I've been dealing with since the release of CUTIEMARKS. I suppose I don't necessarily mean I've been experiencing burnout in that I haven't been working on stuff. Rather, the response to CUTIEMARKS (especially seeing the reviewbombing done over RateYourMusic) left me feeling like I wasn't quite good enough for some reason.

I think I'm good enough though, I don't think this feeling occurs because there's any merit in these thoughts. Rather, I feel oddly self conscious now about appealing to the more widespread music critic world. A lot of music in the spaces I create in (namely electronic dance music) is often looked down upon in the 'higher echelons of music enjoyment'. Paired with the fact that I do very colourful pony music, it makes me a rather big target for people to come down on.

Going into making Fish Whisperer, I specifically set out to make a project that would both criticize and appeal to the critical music consensus. I've done my part in doing that, now, and I feel more able to try and work through these feelings of self consciousness. This remix is one of the first things to aid me in doing that. It ties in very heavily with the fact that it's a style of dubstep that has been considered "uncool" and out of trend since probably 2015 or 2016. It's a really melodic, complextro-ey, Bend +/- growl type of song.

I used to try making this style of dubstep rather often. However, a quick tour through my discography revealed to me that I actually never completed and released something in this style for the near decade I've been releasing music publicly. I came to this realization only after I had actually completed the remix. This takes me to the second point I established, in that I am now fulfilling a childhood wish.

It's a huge deal to me to finally release something in this style of music. I haven't really innovated on it much and it's hardly more than the sum of its inspirations, but it also makes me super happy anyway. I was not skilled enough or had the attention span to actually accomplish a song like this when I was younger, and when I finally was able to, it was already out of style and not worth pursuing at the time.

So here I am pursuing it.

I think the whole thing of trends in the EDM community is really annoying actually. In some cases in can drive new ideas to new heights, but it can also really oversaturate other things even though there are really cool things to support it. Things like Big Room and Future Bass are considered really cheesy and silly right now, but I think that's because nobody is innovating on those things and making them fresh. I think that needs to happen, I want to see lots of genres become consistently innovated and reimagined. You see this happening widespread with a lot of genres that seem to have this trend agreed upon, like the rise of breakbeat inspired stuff in the indie electronic scene again. I think we should just consistently innovate things. Sound is kind of infinite, so it's always possible.

Anyway. The Antonymph spirit of everything is to create things for yourself and to feel as whimsical and in love with the smaller things in life as possible. I think I'm going to do a lot more music that is considered out of style and not very trendy in the EDM community. And I definitely need to regain my ability to not care what critical people think of my work. I can improve the fundamental stuff on my own time. If people really get upset at me for the styles and content matter that I write about, so be it. I'm writing for the weirdo in the corner of a school dance, not the people dancing.
