Astrology Observations: No.28
*just based on my observations, only take what resonates
Tumblr media
(Sorry it’s been a minute, I got my time back then I got sick- like same day! I’m good now, thank god, but it was absolutely insane and everything has been going on in the world, my God)
-If your moon opposes your ascendant you may be known for making the wrong impressions on people (especially first impressions) at some point in your life
-Not the first time I said this but I feel like Libra Asc tend to need to balance out aspects of their life more bc of their houses having the opposite signs over them.
-On the other hand I feel like Aries asc have a very straightforward, sometimes less complicated world view bc of their houses lining up with their traditional rulers.
-Mars in determemt and fall (Libra, cancer, 12th house) really gives you a finite amount of stamina
Tumblr media
-I feel like cancer venus/moons tend to wax the most poetically and romantically about the nostalgia they feel. Even stronger for Venus.
-Men with cancer placements be like: I didn’t know I was manipulating you into being nice to me until it was already happening (lmao oof)
-I noticed Aries and Scorpio Sun men/masc folks can get romanticized a lot, I think this is bc their identity is ruled by mars traditionally, so they tend to be assigned more masculine traits/act their traits out in a more “traditionally” (or even just comfortably) masculine way
-Aqua Sun/asc/venus usually have some features that makes their face really stand out I noticed (unique brow/nose/head shape etc) (idk why I haven’t seen this with moons as much)
-Signs in your 8th house may come off as mysterious or hard to understand
-You may find it really easy to vibe with people that have Sun conjunct your Asc
Tumblr media
-I’ve noticed that a lot of Virgo mars may eat like really spicy or punishing foods (especially if the mars is in a fire house)
-Saturn aspecting your big 3 can help you age really well- depending on how well you take care of yourself (extreme example: dick van dyke, he’s almost 100 and he’s still jumping around with so much energy)
-Pisces placements can be like incredibly intelligent and yet still come off as a bit spacey (one of my favorite YouTubers used to head extra credits and he is SO SMART, like just a seriously huge capacity for knowledge but he sounds spacey when he does his chill gameplays and pieces things together unscripted lol)
-Jupiter square/opposition Sun can make you come off as overly pessimistic, it can also make you come off as optimistic at the wrong times (laughing at serious moments, etc)
-Taurus placements are so motivated by food, it’s so real (the amount of times I’ve had a Taurus sun/moon/mars not hear a word I was saying bc they were scoping out a restaurant? Countless lol)
-I notice a lot of rappers & musicians (especially the innovative ones) have major Pisces placements
Tumblr media
-Aries moons get emotional fulfillment by winning what they chase after (Aries in big 6 tends to make you go after things in general too imo)
-I noticed sometimes Leo moon can make you a bit self centered, like in the most literal sense, you may have trouble understanding perspectives outside of your own
-Virgos and Geminis and 3rd/6th house placements have great memory but they tend to forget certain aspects. They tend to forget or mix up details. (My ex took like 3 years to remember my middle name beyond the first initial lol god; also, I always remember zodiac signs but not birthdays lol)
-I love how Joe Pera has a cancer Mercury and his comedy is like the coziest comedy I’ve ever heard, he even got his following bc his helping people fall asleep and just talking through his chill podcast (did not expect him to have like the most fire in his chart tho?? Wouldn’t have guessed lol)- Pisces Mercury and Mercury with hard aspects to Neptune probably have a cozy affect on others when they communicate with them too

A Sweet Taurus Throuple
Summary: Silver x Epel x Reader. What a polyamorous relationship looks like for NRC's hottest Aries'.
Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces Aries Gemini Cancer-coming soon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How it happens
All three of you are really playing the long game here. You and Epel can't help but fall for Silver with his beauty, grace, and strength. You and Silver can't help but fall for Epel because of his independence, strength, and how firm he is in staying true to himself. Silver and Epel can't help but fall for you because of your strength (surprise surprise), your brilliance as a "beast tamer", and just your kindness and empathy towards the both of them.
So what do you three do with this little love triangle?
Nothing.
For FIVE YEARS!!!!!
Enter Lilia and Rook.
Who could have ever predicted that you would be staying in the Valley of Thorns, and Silver would be assigned as your escort, while at the same time, Epel is shadowing Rook, as his photography apprentice, also in the Valley of Thorns?
What are the odds?
And when the three of you need a little push after rekindling your feelings for one another, in come Rook and Lilia with romantic mood music, and a heart wrenching song about unrequited requited love that would melt the hardest of hearts.
None of you stood a chance.
What these Tuarus' get up to
Silver is so scared of dating for so long because of his sleeping condition. But when he gets with you two, you and Epel make it clear that it's not a problem, and there's no way you'll let him sleep alone. One of you tries to stay with him at all times, so that you can cuddle him, and be there as a source of comfort when he wakes up. But when the three of you are together, the cuddle game is so insane. Tbh, the three of you are such snuggle bugs. And, yes, Rook and Lilia have far too many photos of the three of you sleeping and cuddled up under a blanket.
The biggest fight the three of you ever have (if it could even be called a fight, and not a passive aggressive standoff) is where you all live. Silver always imagined settling down in the Valley of Thorns, and serving under Malleus, until the day he died. Epel always imagined he would settle down in Harvestown, and take over the family orchard (also he had an image of himself chopping lumber while the two of you applauded him, or whatever). And you've always imagined ending up in your own world with your lovers, and since that is pretty much out, you'd started to formulate your own new plans. None of you is ready to change these life plans, so you'll somehow have to find a happy medium.
The three of you are living the most epic of cottage core vibes. Including, but not limited to, picnics. Silver and his animal friends know the best, coziest, most isolated spots. And Epel has perfected a myriad of apple treats and juices. The three of you, and your animal friends, all sit and chat about everything and nothing, and eat well. Then you all nap in the warm spring sun, wake up to each other's sleepy kisses, and return home to cuddle some more. (Be warned: sometimes you will return to find your home invaded by nosy dads. *Cough* Rook. *Cough* Lilia.)
You don't need words to express your love. You express your love in goodbye kisses. You express your love in gifts and baked goods. You express your love in snuggles, and hugs, and hand holding. And if that didn't get it across, the three of you start color coordinating without even thinking about it.
Your loyalty to one another is the only thing that proves to people outside of your relationship that any of you can get "overly emotional". If anyone says anything bad about either of your partners, or if someone tries to hit on one of you, there is a sudden righteous anger that takes over.
In summary, it's an unexpected trio, that  works, and is probably the sweetest one we've visited so far.

Pisces ♓ - The Fish 🐠
Element - Water 🌊
Modality - Mutable
Ruler - Jupiter/Neptune
"Feminine"
☀🌙☿♀♂
Where's Pisces in your chart?
I have an empty Pisces MC/10th House
Do the images resonate with your Pisces placement(s)?
Tumblr media
#Pisces ♓ 🐠 Imagine being so tuned into the Universe you're practically its favorite playlist. Pisces, that's you. You've got this dreamy vibe that makes people think you know life's deepest secrets... because you probably do. But you don't always know how you know.
It's like you're living in your own personal fairy tale, but with way more emotional depth than people may even realize about you.
Tumblr media
Especially if you have a Pisces Moon. You folks are like the human version of that feeling you get when you're staring at the ocean, all profound and stuff. Your emotions run REALLY deep, and you just get people without them having to say a word. It's like emotional telepathy or something.
Tumblr media
And when talking with someone who has their Mercury in Pisces, it can be like diving into a sea of ideas. You are all about those deep, meaningful convos that last until 3 AM. Your thoughts? A beautiful mess of creativity and intuition. You are the friend who'll help you decode your weirdest dreams.
Tumblr media
Falling in love with a Pisces Venus is like being wrapped in the coziest, warmest blanket made of pure affection. You love with a depth that is deep with understanding and full of compassion. You're all about romance, sometimes cheesy or corny depending on who you ask, but it's the kind that feels like it's out of a love dramedy movie.
Tumblr media
And if you ever felt like someone who doesn't really chase their dreams, but rather switch gears and flow with what feels good...then you may have a Pisces Mars. You've got this chill vibe about going after what you want, but people shouldn't be fooled...you can be as determined as they come. It's likely you're more spiritually driven, but make it action-packed by going on retreats, or escaping in some way.

Okay, I have the same questions for you! How long have you been writing and what are some of your favorite tropes/storylines to write? Also, do you have a movie/show/book you’d consider a hidden gem or under-hyped fave??
Hello there Tower! 🎶 thanks for providing me with a wonderful distraction while I work from home today ehehehe *rubs my tiny fly hands together*
How long have I been writing:
Truly, kind of all my life? I've loved books, reading, and words since childhood - I was that quirky little kid who preferred going to the library over going to the park 😅 I wrote a LOT in high school and college, but I doubted myself too much to ever do anything with any of it. I never submitted short stories to publishing houses, never posted any of my fanfics online as a result. I took a long break from writing after graduating college and only recently got back into it, about... late 2021, I want to say? I re-read some fave old Soul Eater fanfics and got inspired to take up the metaphorical pen again, and I'm so glad I did. Now it feels like all I do with my life is write and I wouldn't have it any other way tbh!
Favorite Tropes/Storylines To Write:
Boy oh boy, where to even begin? I love romance, comedy, and the wonderful intersection of the two in the form of the ROMANTIC COMEDY, which im sure is pretty obvious given the kinds of fics I tend to post. I write as a form of escape from reality and use humor to cope and process big feelings, so writing rom-coms with a lot of heart and mature themes at their core is my jam.
In terms of tropes - my faves are the following, in no particular order: Friends to Lovers, Idiots In Love, Boy Falls First, Found Family (im actually a HUGE SLUT for this one and want to write it so badly!), Second Chance Romance, Animal Companions (i utilize this one a TON in my original fiction), Cozy Fantasy and/or stories that seamlessly weave magic or supernatural elements into the "real" world... and lastly, not really a trope, but Character Driven Stories are the GOAT.
Also... I just really love writing smut. PWP one-shots are my guilty pleasure. >:3
Hidden Gems/Underhyped Faves:
I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED!
Books (though two of these are comics technically):
-SAGA by Brian K Vaughan & Fiona Staples: adult graphic novel space epic series full of memorable characters and absolutely gorgeous art that tackles a lot of tough stuff and has made me feel the full spectrum of human emotion
-The Tea Dragon Society by K. O'Neill: a wholesome, heartwarming all ages comic chocked full of pocket-sized dragons and the COZIEST fantasy vibes EVER
-The Locked Tomb series: idk if it counts as an underrated fave/hidden gem cause the book series has a pretty sizable and active fan base, but im recommending it anyway cause Harrowhark Nonagesimus is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, and if you like stories that explore both romantic and platonic partnership dynamics, you should give it a read if you haven't already!!
Shows/Anime:
-D. Gray-Man: shounen anime set in Victorian England about exorcists and featuring the most Cinnamon Roll Main Character in the Universe who I will always love with my whole heart, Allen Walker
-Re:Creators: a reverse isekai in which fictional characters are suddenly pulled from their universes into the real world and tackles the question of what fiction/art mean to us humans, one of my favorite shows of ALL TIME with excellent music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano
-Baccano!: a sort of steampunk/fantasy caper involving alchemists, immortals, outlaws, gangsters, an immortality elixir, and a murder mystery on a train, told in a non-linear format that really puzzles the brain on the first couple of watches
-Witch Hat Atelier: is technically a manga but is getting an anime soon! A series about a young girl who goes to magic school to become a witch, featuring an excellent magic system and gorgeous art
Movies:
-this answer is already soooooo long so ill just recommend my favorite movie of all time, PACIFIC RIM, which if you haven't seen you should WATCH RIGHT AWAY because it has the partners trope you love! Its a 2013 sci-fi flick directed by Guillermo del Toro about kaijus invading Earth from outer space, and the giant, dual-piloted robots that humanity devises to fight back with, and was so revolutionary in its portrayal of its main female character that it created a whole new benchmark for assessing portrayal of women characters in fiction (The Mako Mori Test).
In conclusion - thanks for giving me an excuse to ramble on and on, and I do truly hope you enjoyed all this drivel! 🙏😁

3 Seasons Review
Tumblr media
(7/10) Features: -POC Protagonist -Pronoun Options (He/They/She) TWs: N/A Average route time: About 45 minutes to an hour
Link: https://hamiltonhour.itch.io/3-seasons Three Seasons by HamiltonHour is a fun and light-hearted, albeit short, experience! Here we follow our protagonist, whom you can name and select pronouns for, as they go to supposedly be interviewed at Three Seasons Inc., only to be whisked away into the elemental realm. Stuck there for "a week", you meet our current three choices, Yuto (the Winter Spirit), Sol (the Summer Spirit), and Rye (the Fall Spirit.) Let's start with Yuto!
Going into it, I expected Yuto to be cold and closed-off, as he claimed the others described him as 'cold-hearted.' I find this a bit odd, as he doesn't ever really act that way, always acting about as kind and open as the other two, although in a much more responsible manner. His route has some cute date moments, but, like the other two, it is tragically short, and I feel as though the development from strangers to lovers happens much too quickly. As well, he comes out of his shell extremely fast. Even so, his unexpected cheekiness gave this route a certain special something that I find mediocre romantic visual novels often lack.
Sol also managed to surprise me, given that when I had selected Yuto the first time Sol had made a passing flirtatious comment, giving me the impression that he would be the flirt of the game. Upon selecting his route, however, he had much more of a himbo energy, and was monumentally oblivious to my advances. It was cute, and despite how short and fast the route was, it made much more sense for his character to fall for someone so quickly, so I didn't mind it as much. His concern after the MC is nailed in the face with a volleyball was especially wholesome and sweet. As well, his design is one of my personal favorites.
The current final route, Rye, was fairly decent. His design was the warmest and coziest, and his office was definitely the comfiest looking. What made him stand out a bit amongst the other two options is that he had an actual plot going, separate from your own "trapped-in-the-elemental-realm" thing (this plot being his art show.) His love of art and reading was very cute, and his hopeless romantic energy was extremely pleasant, giving him an overall comforting and warm vibe, much like Fall itself. I also loved his teasing, though this is something he shares in common with the other two boys as well. His ending was the most satisfying, ending with a kiss in the rain, although I still must bring up just how quickly things escalated. Speaking of which...
The Problems with 3 Seasons. Every game, no matter how good, has problems. The first, and smallest, issue is with the textboxes. There's no easy way to tell who's talking, aside from the nametag, as all the boys talk relatively similarly. I feel as though we could benefit from some flourishes on the textbox, both so it looks less 'default' and so that we can better differentiate who's talking at any given time. Different fonts could also help add more visual interest to this section of the screen. The routes also could use a little more variety in the beginning, as they’re all a bit too same-y pre-dates. One issue with the game is that, as stated multiple times before, the routes are extremely short. The game is supposed to take place over "a week" (re: five days, re: two to three days), but due to time passing much faster in the elemental realm, it feels like we barely get any time to get to know the boys, and it certainly feels like much too little time for them to fall in love with us. As Yuto said, the time we spent together is a drop in the bucket of his life. I feel like the game would be better if the time was extended, say to a month, or if time didn't pass so quickly in the elemental realm, so that we would have more time to see these characters grow, and give more reason as to why an immortal being would fall in love with you so fast. Another issue is how useless the protagonist feels. There are two minigames wherein we do our job, and whilst functional, they (the minigames) don't add anything to the experience, both being extremely short and pointless. Were these to stay in the future product, I would recommend a wider variety of them, or perhaps a more difficult and frequent version (which would also be easier to accomplish with an extended time limit!) As it stands, the protagonist does two tasks and then nothing, and whilst I understand the justification being that they don't have magic, the other boys mention how, once teleported, the protagonist is wearing a "Spring staff" uniform. Surely, not every menial task the Spring Staff does requires magic as well? Introducing some side-characters in the form of seasonal staff (such as the Spring Staff) who you could help and work alongside would help breathe life into the game and add some variety aside from the gorgeous boys we have! As well, it would help feed into the sense of progression in the game, especially if they were to note subtle changes in the boys you pursue, something you yourself probably wouldn't notice since you didn't know them beforehand. Praises for the game are still abundant, despite those issues! The character designs and backgrounds are gorgeous, and I feel as though each office fits the boys perfectly! Despite the short length, the game still manages to be quite funny and even romantic at times, with each of the boys' dates being unique and enjoyable experiences. I hardly ever felt as though they said something out of character, which attests to how pleasant the writing can be. Additionally, I absolutely love how each boy gives you a customized piece of jewelry at the end of their route, making it all the more personal and special, as well as giving closure as to how you would find or see them again. The music, also, is nice, if not repetitive. Overall, I would recommend this game to someone with around two to three hours open and who enjoys isekai-type short stories. Please excuse any clunkiness, as this is the first review I’m posting, and I’m still working out the kinks in organization! Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you again soon! <3

— random headcanons —
Tumblr media
Synopsis: random headcanons with some of my favorites <3
Warnings: cursing, and not proofread
Game/ fandom: twisted wonderland
Characters: Leona, Floyd, jade, cater, and trey
Pronouns for reader: gender neutral/ not mentioned
A/n: hello! Listen… I know there’s requests in my inbox but I’m actually really enjoying writing for twisted wonderland! I hope none of you mind, as I know it’s not really what many of you follow me for, but either way I hope you enjoy! Have a great rest of your day/ evening! :D
Tumblr media
— Leona —
Leona isn’t very accustomed to the cold weather in the fall, and winter at NRC, so he wears a sweater during that time. Coziest sweater you’ve ever seen too.
As we know he doesn’t really care if he leaves his stuff around, but will probably lecture you if you do the same. I don’t know why but I can kind of see that for him.
Leona: “mc why did you leave your wallet just laying around? It’s gonna get stolen you know.”
Mc: “Leona you did the exact same thing… like a week ago…???”
Probably one of those people who can “smell rain” or “smell when it’s gonna rain”. Like you’ll be eating lunch together outside and he’ll just furrow his brows and say “let’s go inside it smells like it’s gonna rain” and even if it was the sunniest day of the week… it’ll rain! He’s right like 95% of the time.
I think the idea that Leona will say something to someone and ruggie will be in the background like “YEAH YOU HEAR THAT YEAH YEAH” like hyping Leona up as he sits there just ಠ_ಠ
He spends a lot of time in the botanical garden, and sure, granted he spends the majority of his time sleeping in the botanical garden, but I think he can actually name, and recognize a fair amount of plants that he’s seen in there. He’s not interested in them, but what else was he gonna stare at when he’s ignoring ruggie as he’s trying to drag him to class.
Wears an uncomfortable amount of leather and animal print. Listen if no one else will say it then I will.
Has awful music taste. Like it is just… horrendous. It is either really great songs to cry to but awful to just casually listen to, or just plain awful music.
— Floyd —
Floyd my beloved <3
I get the vibes that he’s a Dick to play against in basketball. Not even because he’s tall as hell, but because he’s so… all over the place, and if he gets frustrated then it’s over for the other team. He’ll try to win the game as quickly as possible, and just be so obnoxious. (Loves if Mc watches his games though <3)
I like to think that he gets bored in class and so he doodles on his paper a lot. The teacher will receive a homework assignment with drawings of fish, being absolutely devoured by sharks, or even simple things like what he had for lunch that day.
Collects shoes. The type of guy to walk into a store and walk out with like 4 pairs of old shoes that are dirty as hell. It’s fine though cause he’ll clean them up and they’ll look good as new within a few days.
I think it’d be interesting if he knew how to do things like knit. Jade taught him because Floyd was curious about what it was, and so now Floyd just had the knowledge of knowing how to knit. Doenst mean he does it often if at all, but he just knows how to.
Probably has one of those little octopus things that when you turn them inside out have a different face on them. He uses it rather often. He only uses it cause it’s “a weird human thing” and he thinks it’s cute.
Mc: “Floyd you’ve gotta do homework, or crewel is literally going to kill you.”
Floyd: *flips octopus plush inside out to the angry side*
Mc: “Floyd…???“
I would like to make this clear, Floyd is smart. Like very smart. So, he feels he can just glide by in classes. He cannot. Please remind him that he cannot just skip potions class, even if he does know most of the things taught :’)
Picked up a lot of slang when he came to the surface. Combine that with mermaid slang and everyone around him is just like “tf did you just say???” but no one dares to correct him, nor ask him what he just said.
— jade —
Probably smiles when texting someone he’s fond of, but like… a sinister smile. Like everyone looks at him in fear when he smiles at his phone while texting when in reality he’s just texting kalim about a project they were partnered for HEVHS
Really likes food. He likes cooking food that involves mushrooms for sure, but aside from that he adores trying new food that may or may not involve mushrooms. Like you’ll eat out with him, and he’ll suggest a new place every time. JAVHAVA THEYRE ALL SO RANDOM TOO like they’re in really weird places, and with some of the weirdest names. Always have really good food though.
Talks out loud to himself a lot. It sometimes is the most random stuff too, like “could a person fit in that tire?” LIKE HUH??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN??? If you ask him about it he’ll just be like “oh no don’t mind me just thinking out loud” like mkay… just please don’t do something illegal.
Has really steady hands. It’s really random but like his hands will not shake whatsoever, unless he is like having a really really bad panic attack which is super rare for him, like once a year rare.
Mc: “wow your hands… are really straight…”
Jade: “why’re you so concerned about my hands??? Hm mc???”
— cater —
Literally holds hands with anyone he’s close with. He’s very physically affectionate even if you’re just friends, like he wants people to know… that you two are friends, or dating. Like they have to know. It’s just an instinct for him.
Has those vines in his room. The ones down below. Yeah. He has those. (I literally took this picture, these are my… wall vines. THEY LIGHT UP TOO (caters also light up))
Tumblr media
Probably collects things like shoes, stickers, phone cases, you know things that are useful, but collecting them is… unnecessary. Even gets the expensive ass stuff too. Like if a pair of shoes is like $180 but… they’re in his favorite color, and he doesn’t have that pair yet so… what the hell why not.
Scrolls through MagiCam until like 1am. I am a firm believer that his sleep schedule is so fucked, but he still is like fairly energetic and full of life throughout the day. (Probably drinks energy drinks to achieve that though) he’ll even go to the kitchen to get a midnight snack, but if you run into him he’s SO MEAN. LIKE DAMN HES SO FREAKING CRANKY TvT
Mc: “cater… what are you doing in the kitchen”
Cater: “what does it look like I’m doing I’m microwaving soup. Dumbass… I’m sorry.”
Probably hates getting flowers for some occasion. This is kinda random but he strikes me as someone who has a lot of allergies, and he’s allergic to pollen as well. And he fucking h a t e s flowers. For no reason too! Roses are whatever, he’s surrounded by them all day at the dorm, but anything else and he’s just like “wow… thanks. *tosses out flowers*”
— trey —
I feel he has a lot of habits from taking care of his siblings. Like since he’s the oldest he typically reminded his siblings to eat something, grab them something, remind them to brush their teeth, you know that kinda stuff. And now he does it with his closest friends.
Trey: “did you brush your teeth yet?”
Mc: “…no big brother tray omg so sorry I forgot ಠ_ಠ”
I typically hate and I mean, hate headcanons on what characters smell like. Like it’s just a weird ick for me. But trey smells like cinnamon and bread like all the time.
I feel like I’ve said this before but trey is blind without his glasses. Like literally cannot see in front of his own nose, he has thick ass lenses too.
Mc: “trey look at how amazing this is!”
Trey: “you stole my glasses I can’t see shit.”
Also does the thing where when he laughs but like in a way that’s like “oh my god you’re so stupid it’s funny” he has an instinct to put his hand to his face, and under his glasses. Idk man his hands are probably really hot that’s why I… I wrote this. *cough*
Has a collection of books but they’re all on like… the history of food/ cooking. He strikes me as a history nerd… but he also enjoys baking and cooking. Why not combine the two together????
His siblings paint his nails when he’s at home for break. He always has something with him to remind him of them too. They’re not particularly far away per say, but he misses those dorks very much <3

Nights With Nagito, Chiaki
Tumblr media
Request: "I really like your 'nights with' stuff, so maybe nights with Nagito and Chiaki? (Separately please!)"
Tumblr media
Nagito's nighttime routine could go one of two ways
Either he has absolutely 0% of a routine at all and just kind of crashes whenever he happens to crash
Or he has to follow a routine pretty strictly if he hopes to calm himself enough to rest
Honestly, he could even be a mix of the two, sometimes following a strict plan and sometimes just sleeping randomly
It would probably depend on your own bedtime routine
If you have a structured plan, he'd follow along
If you're more of the type to just crawl right into bed, he'll do that too
Though, Nagito does have rougher nights where he finds himself plagued with more anxiety and insomnia than usual
That's when he'd need more structure to soothe himself enough to fall asleep
Then he's willing to do pretty much any of the standard tips for falling asleep
Calming teas, stretching, reading, deep breathing
Sometimes it's because what he's doing is actually calming, and sometimes it's because it's distracting him from his worries
Nonetheless, Nagito will generally follow your lead
When he does fall asleep, Nagito becomes the world's biggest cuddly koala
He tends to keep himself from being as clingy as he really is when he's awake, but when he's asleep, he isn't conscious enough to hold back
Prepare to be absolutely smothered by this soft, marshmallow man
9 time out of 10, you wake up with him literally on top of you, with his arms wrapped around you securely
Good luck trying to get up if you wake up before him, because he's a deep sleeper and he definitely isn't about to let go of you while he's still asleep
Tumblr media
Chiaki is definitely the type to not have even the slightest bit of a nighttime routine
She's either eating, gaming, or sleeping
That's about it
Basically she plays a game until she just passes out, always ending up sleeping while the game menu cycles in the background
So similarly to Nagito, Chiaki bases her routine on yours!
She plays at her computer while you're up, grabs her switch and follows you around while you get ready for bed, and crawls into bed beside you- still playing her game
Though, being with you, she kind of develops a routine of doing just that
Once you're both in bed, you curl up against her and watch or listen to her play until you give into the sleep tugging at your eyes
Her favorite thing in the entire world is feeling you lay against her as she plays
She stays up really late while gaming, but just having you fall asleep beside her is more than enough to make her swoon
She's convinced that it makes her play even better than usual
On the rare occasion that you aren't sleeping beside her, she finds herself struggling in-game and in real life as sleep seems to evade her
Cuddling with you is the only bedtime routine she has, and she just gets anxious without it/you
When you both are asleep, Chiaki actually let's go of her handheld/controller to cling to you
It's very rare that you two don't wake up with limbs completely tangled together
Chiaki is also pretty clingy, which is only amplified when she's sleepy
Well, more sleepy than usual
Also, your shared room definitely has the most chill vibe ever
Chiaki has those LED lights on both the wall and on her consoles/pc, which softly pulse from pink to purple and cast a rosy glow on the entire room
She also plays a lot of games with awesome soundtracks, so more often than not you end up sleeping to the sounds of minecraft, animal crossing, stardew valley, Zelda, etc

Presenting, for your entertainment and amusement, a Titles Game from the TSB Discord!
Aim of the game: a title is suggested, and everyone pitches in their idea of what kind of fic they would write for that title.
“Hot Chocolate Kisses” - suggested by @rebelmeg
@lbibliophile-mcu - Tony and Bruce are undertaking a very serious series of experiments to determine the optimal ratio of hershey kisses to milk in hot chocolate. And taste-testing the results. (actually, that would be fun to do as Tony and Morgan)
@summerpipedream - Natasha/Pepper - Natasha hates hot chocolate. It's always been too sweet, too sticky and if she could drink any other winter holiday drink, she would. Figuring out how to tell her girlfriend Pepper that, the biggest chocoholic in the world (Tony literally bought her a chocolate fountain for her birthday one year), well...it was a problem.
@rebelmeg - Iron Family winter tradition that comes about the first day they get a big snow. everyone wears their coziest sweaters, fuzziest socks, and wooliest winter hats, and they all drink hot chocolate out on the porch swing as they watch snow fall
@somesortofitalianroast - Hot chocolate kisses: Bucky teaches Russian History at Appalachian State University. Steve Rogers is the new World War II teacher. It always amuses Bucky that the UNC System decided that they needed an entire 3-credit hour class on World War II, and why AppState was chosen as the university, since Fayetteville is, like, right next to Fort Bragg. Or something. At least Steve’s easy on the eyes. Even if he’s not into guys. Except he is. Into guys that is. They’ve just started dating, Steve’s coming over to Bucky’s house for the first time, and a snowstorm hits. Featuring hot chocolate, declarations of love, only one bed, and enough pining to repopulate the pine barrens.
@darthbloodorange - Captain America is meant to be the paragon of virtue, the pinnacle of perfection. Or so Tony thought until catches Steve stuffing his face full of chocolate in the middle of the night. He demands Steve share the chocolate, but he's eaten it all ready. The only way Tony's get some, it seems it, is to kiss it from Steve's hot, chocolate covered lips.
(Keep reading for more amazing ideas!)
“to love and only love” - suggested by @somesortofitalianroast
@rebelmeg - giving me tony and maria vibes for some reason. can't decide if it's angsty, about how maria loves her son more from a distance, or if it's fluffy, and she loves him more than enough to make up for the ways howard doesn't.
@summerpipedream - Tony/Bucky - "To love and only love" is what the world always said about soulmates. His mother always said that when he'd meet his soulmate, he'd know. But what did that say about him when his soulmate kept running away?
@somesortofitalianroast - To love and only love: Cap!Steve/oblivious mechanic, Tony. Snarky identity porn. (changed it because, now that i think about it, it's tony/steve, that fic. lol)
@jamesbuckystark - to love and only love - Angst - Tony falls in love way too easily and quickly. Even when the ones he loves hurt him time and time again, he cannot find it in his heart to hate them
@jacarandabanyan - To love and only love: Tony hates soulmates and destiny deciding who he’s supposed to love and all the cultural adoration around the whole concept of soulmate marks. But nothing beats how much he hates that he loves his soulmate, despite himself. Steve clearly hasn’t seen their matching marks, and even more clearly doesn’t like, let alone love Tony. Tony can’t stop himself from living Steve- another thing to add to the list of things he hates, his stupid, insuppressible love for Steve- but he can avoid letting Steve know about their matching marks. He can love Steve and do nothing about it.
@lbibliophile-mcu - The vibe I'm getting from this title is subverted love triangle. The set-up is all there for angst and jealousy, but the characters all decide to focus on the positives instead. Whether this is one character deciding that (close) friendship is enough, or some degree of poly. Just everyone deciding that the important thing is that everyone is happy and together.
@trashcanakin - I get arranged marriage, enemies to real lovers vibes from it. Winteriron of course if I wrote it xD
To love and only love: Why does Tony have to marry him of all people. It's bad enough he's being forced into marriage because it's what the "kingdom" needs, what about what he needs? Or wants for that matter. And Bucky doesn't even like him, always silently glaring at him. It will never work, they just can't pretend to love each other when it takes all their strength just to like each other. But things change with the seasons. Could one terrible accident move the tide and show the true feelings hidden below?
@darthbloodorange - To love and only love (Stony): It's been years since anyone one has come by Tony's lair, leaving the dragon alone to tinker and work with his tech hoard. That's how he likes it: no knights, no paladins, no trouble. Just him and his bots. One day a werewolf (Steve) makes his way into his lair. He does everything he can to get rid of him, but the werewolf always returns. Before long Tony realises he likes having Steve around, likes how happy Steve is when he returns to Tony. Before long any frustration Tony feels for the werewolf is worn away, and all there is left is for him to love him. But would it ever work out between a dragon and a werewolf?
“Falling off the edge of the world with you” - @summerpipedream
@rebelmeg - pepperony, tony is teaching pepper how to work the rescue armor. they've been at it long enough that she's got the hang of it, and they celebrate by taking a thrilling flight together, far enough up that there's nothing but them, the edge of the world, and the stars
@summerpipedream - Tony & Rhodey - Whenever he got angry or tired at the world, Rhodey always used to drive him to their favourite lookout. Told him to yell and scream when things got too much and the world would fade away. Through the years, this never changed.
@jamesbuckystark - falling off the edge of the world with you - Rhodey knows it's unhealthy, following Tony to the ends of the earth. He also knows that Tony would understand if he said no. But there's something about the rush he gets when he's with Tony
@lronhusbands - falling off the edge of the world with you - ironhusbands. Idk like soft and fluffy boys who are just flying in their suits just to fly and playing games with each other and like total au where Rhodey doesn’t fall like he does so like they’re total idiots who cut their jets and plummet to earth and laugh bc they think they're invincible
@somesortofitalianroast - Falling off the edge of the world with you: 70 years ago, Steve Fell. Capital “F” Fell. There’s only one term for it, anyway. He might have survived, barely, yes, but he survived. But the thing about a Fall is that you never fly again. Even if you recover. Steve had resigned himself to never see the world from the air again. Until Tony.
@lbibliophile-mcu - Something different: Extremis!Tony (technopath version). Jarvis has been helping him get used to his new skills and senses. Because as much as Tony prefers to run rather than walk, he can also feel the very real risk of losing himself in this world of information and connections. The climax has Jarvis 'standing' beside him (acting as his guide and tether) as he takes his first dive into the internet.
@darthbloodorange - Falling off the edge of the world with you (Stony): Tony thought he would be the last person Steve would turn to for flying lessons. He didn't even have real wings anymore, not since Afghanistan. He doesn't fly like he used to. He didn't even think that Steve wouldn't know how to fly. With the broad, strong wings the serum had given him, Steve should be the best flier out. But as Steve stands before him, shyly stammering out his request for help, Tony could only find in him to say "yes" Tony schedules in time every week to help teach Steve how to fly. It soon becomes their thing.
@jacarandabanyan - Falling off the edge of the world with you: Space AU- Tony has always dreamed of exploring out beyond the edge of the known universe, and Rhodey has always known that he would follow Tony anywhere, no matter where. Even if current mathematical models of the edges of the known universe indicate that the two of them are more likely to end up falling into the void of nothingness than discover another universe or whatever it is Tony thinks he’s going to find.
“My heart beets for you (Mint to be)” - @darthbloodorange
@rebelmeg - the avengers have transformed the roof of the tower into a garden. and it's going pretty well. they've all got their own spots for their own stuff, and a section they do together, it's a good team bonding activity. at least... it is until tony's mint ("it's peppermint, get it?!") starts taking over clint's beets ("they're purple!"). then it's all-out war, and the one with the greenest thumb wins (pun not intended, hulk.)
@trashcanakin - My Heart Beets For You (Mint to Be): (No powers AU) Bucky runs a little cafe in a nice quiet town. They specialize in pastries, some say that their mint pies are the best around. Then some loud, rowdy, asshole buys the lot across the street and puts in a music store. Oh, it is on! This Tony guy wants a war, he's got one. And toss in soulmate AU on top because it would be funny xD
@jamesbuckystark - My heart beets for you (Mint to be) - Bucky is a garden sprite. No one sees him, and he bestows his loving touch to those who deserve it. Tony tries to be a plant dad... but fails miserably, due to the lack of sun and his forgetting to tend to his plants. Bucky takes one look at the man and falls in love. Imagine Tony's surprise when his dead plants are now alive and blooming!
(addition by @trashcanakin ) Tony's apartment is full of plants, flowers, and greenery because every time Bucky looks at him and blushes it makes more plants grow xD
And he's like "IDK WHAT'S HAPPENING!"
@summerpipedream - My heart beets for you (Mint to be) - Tony/Sam - Maria's last instructions in her will to Tony, along with the keys to her old family manor, were "Be Happy". It didn't take long for Tony to decide to quit his job, pack up his things and move out in the middle of nowhere to turn his mother's old home into a bed and breakfast. Of course, he never expected to run into Farmer Sam, who insists on sharing his extra fresh produce with him, dropping by 'just to see him smile'.
@darthbloodorange - My heart beets for you (Mint to be) (Stony) Steve and Tony retire from saving the world after the defeat of Thanos. Steve takes up gardening, wanting somewhere calming to do his art, somewhere he can relax. He needed something sedate, something peaceful that he could manage. He starts small, only a handful of flower beds, and learns as he goes. Slowly he starts expanding his garden, growing new sorts of flowers, and food. Herbs for Bruce. Flowers for Nat. A mediation/sensory garden for Sam. Pumpkins for Clint and his kids. A coffee tree for Tony. Soon he has a huge garden at the Compound with something for all of the Avengers. With a little work he manages to convince Tony to help him out in his garden (even if it is mainly to ogle Steve).
“If You Only Knew” - @jamesbuckystark
@rebelmeg - welp. okay. angst. tony ruminating about all the ways the people he loves don't understand the way he loves them. the way he shows them, tells them with different words. all he wants is to be loved back, and he can't understand why he's so unlovable.
@trashcanakin - Bucky would do anything for Tony, anything. Tony's the reason he's free, has a roof over his head, food, has his life back... Tony and Shuri even gave him his mind back, too. But Tony thinks Bucky hates him... Of course, why wouldn't he. Bucky keeps tryin' to show Tony how much he actually cares, but things keep gettin' in the damn way! A story full of misunderstandings, hurt/comfort, and eventual romance. Ayye. Could easily turn that into humor and crack as well, 'cause it's my brand xD
@summerpipedream - If You Only Knew - Steve/Tony "Do you know how long it took me to get home?" scowled Tony, "Every werewolf I ran into on the street told me congratulations, or took him long enough. Did you have something to tell me Steve?" Werewolf Steve is a little too enthusiastic with scenting his human mate. Whoops.
@jamesbuckystark - If You Only Knew - Tony talks in his sleep... a lot. Rhodey has experienced hearing some weird-ass stuff that he's said ever since college. Now Bucky gets woken up by Tony shaking him then saying something like "I farted by a hairy man yesterday" or "who grabbed my cheese in the ocean?" before zonking back out. Tony knows he talks in his sleep and often asks what he said when he wakes up. Bucky can't tell him due to laughing so hard so he ends up wheezing out "oh if you only knew what you said."
@jacarandabanyan - If only you knew: Tony loses his memories after a magical head injury. Nothing should be more important than getting his memories back so he can get back into the field and fight the good fight with these hero-types that claim to be his teammates. But one teammate in particular keeps distracting him from this vital work. For some reason, Bucky Barnes is both eager to help him in any way he can and totally unwilling to be alone with him. If only Tony knew why.
@celtic7irish - It would be a story of one-upmanship of the craziest stunts the Avengers have ever pulled. "If Only You Knew" the TRUE story behind some of those missions. If Only You Knew what really happened in Budapest. If Only You Knew what really happened during that one summer at MIT. Lol.
@jamesbuckystark - Also, angst version. If You Only Knew: Tony Stark, the control freak. Tony Stark, who thinks he knows best and screws stuff up. Tony Stark, the creator of Ultron. All these things, Tony has heard and will agree with. Rhodey does not. The others don't know what he does to keep shady government agencies off their backs. They don't realize what Tony sees at night. He wants to tell them, but Tony won't let him
@darthbloodorange - If You Only Knew: (Stony) Steve locks himself away in his room as Tony brings back another Omega to the tower, not wanting the Alpha to see the tears it brings to his eyes. It wasn't fair, he had no right to be hurt or jealous, Tony wasn't his Alpha. Tony would never be interested in him. Tony was only interested in soft, pretty Omegas. As far as the world cared he was an Alpha. But he wasn't. He was an Omega. If only Tony knew... maybe he would pick him. ...Maybe he would love him.

chapter three
A crowd surrounded her. She was in the ring and the walls were caving in. The spotlight shone down on her; all eyes were on her. They were all expecting something from her - something she cannot give them; greatness. She felt herself getting smaller and smaller – or maybe the stage was sinking lower and lower. Most likely, both. The audience was growing bigger, overpowering her. She’s disappointed them. It was her duty to protect them - but she only hurt them, she only disappointed them.
At the announcer’s desk sat her closest friends; Doyoung, Sonan, Kilara, and Johnny. Behind them were her other friends; Lucas, Roddie, and Taeil amongst others including Sehun, Kyungsoo, and Hendery. They all were standing up, looking down at her. All of them screaming and yelling and insulting – using words against her all at different times. The words were like ammunition, shooting at her constantly. Her head hurt, her heart was wounded, her hope disappeared, her purpose never fulfilled.
They were angry. Infuriated. Full of rage.
She could see them seething between their growls and their yells, telling her she’s a failure. Telling her she never deserved to be the Avatar. Telling her she failed not only them but her purpose and humankind.
The stage got smaller and smaller; she was trapped. There were no exits as the walls were millimeters away from her. Her breath got caught in her throat, she couldn’t breathe. She looked at the ground as she soon fell to her kneels, staring at the cold cement floor beneath her. The only thing preventing her from falling to her death.
“Where is everything we taught you?” An angry voice called from in front of her, “You are right. You fail at your powers. You fail at everything.” The voice taunted, full of venom. Tari looked up, and saw Sukiara and The Osaka Prince in front of her – the Osaka Prince bending lightning whips and remaining silent. “He should’ve been the Avatar, not someone as pathetic and weak as you.” Sukiara seethed.
As The Osaka Prince whipped the lightning rope towards Tari, she saw the Avatars before her in the Avatar State. They were supposed to be helping in the Avatar State; they have the ability to protect her, to protect the Avatar. They have the ability to transfer their powers, their knowledge. The Avatar State is where she’s the most powerful, but she had never felt more weak.
They’re letting me die, Tari realized as the previous Avatars stared at her hopelessly, letting her get repeatedly whipped and attacked by the man who should be the Avatar. She could only feel the static sensation that made her shake, that made her shiver, that made her wince in pain. “I’m sorry,” Tari croaked, trying to apologize to the world around her but her voice failed her. “I’m sorry for failing you, I’m sorry, I’m sorry for messing up.” The final vision she saw was the distant image of her family; her older brother, her younger sister she’s only heard about, and her two parents ; none of them she’s seen since she’s been taken away from her parent’s custody.
With one final lash, she was greeted by darkness, but she could still hear the blaring alarms and the voice echoed throughout a megaphone. “This is a police raid! Everyone here will be arrested for supporting the Avatar and for bending!”
Tumblr media
“You okay?” She heard a soft voice chuckle, calling her out of her slumber. Wait, where am I? She wondered as she knew for sure she wasn’t in her own room. Once her vision readjusted from their sleepy haze, Tari looked around and realised she was in her living room - her head using Johnny’s thigh as a pillow on her couch. Johnny was still on his laptop - the only light illuminating the dark room as he continued to type and write his article for submission to the editors later. Continuing to look around, she noticed Doyoung had fallen asleep on one of the beanbags - his soft snores echoing throughout the room, bouncing off each wall. The sight made Tari aw - Doyoung sleeping was always the sweetest. He always looks calm, even when he’s one of the most secretly chaotic people she knows - but when he sleeps, it looks like theres nothing in the world that can hurt him. And it’s my duty to make sure nothing will, Tari’s thoughts reminded her. Everrything has been reminding her of the stupid Ava-“You were shaking and whimpering.” He commented. Despite his friendly and soft voice with a teasing edge, she could see the serious concern in his eyes.
Or it could be disappointment, she sighed, looking into his brown orbs and seeing their somewhat distressed nature. “Yeah, yeah, just a dream.” She couldn’t talk to him about it, she couldn’t. He wouldn’t be her friend anymore. She’d hate to disappoint him. Tari readjusted so she’d now be sitting up, getting off of Johnny’s lap and throwing her arms up into the air to stretch and yawn.
CRACK, Her elbows cracked, making her eyes widen and Johnny to put his hand over his mouth to prevent himself from laughing and waking up Doyoung. “How long have you been awake for?” She softly whispered, crossing her legs and turning to face Johnny. Her head fell into the palm of her hand as she looked at Johnny, waiting for his answer.
“Haven’t slept yet.” Johnny commented nonchalantly, “I want to get this article done for the online deadline for tomorrow.” At the mention of sleep, he yawned. “I shouldn’t be having any workr tomorrow so guess whose gonna turn up here at midnight because he slept the whole day?” He said in a hushed fake excited voice. “Hey, though, can you look at this?” The journalist scrolled through his document, showing Tari the beautiful photographs full of life taking over the pages and the thousands of words portraying the story. He looked excited about this article – probably the most excited Tari has seen him be in a while, and that means a lot as he was always quite excitable. He’s one of the most positive people she knows.
Tari leaned closer – her eyes still hazy with sleep – and she read the text out loud through hushed whispers, hesitant to wake up Doyoung. “’The Avatar Day festival is a celebratory day initially to remember and commemorate the heroic actions of Aang and Team Avatar. However, within the last few years, it’s become a celebration for the existence of Avatar; from Wan to Aang, no previous Avatar or their companions can be forgotten’” Tari read, before grinning. ‘This is an amazing introduction, Johnny.” Johnny gleamed with pride.
“Wait, look at this bit.” He scrolled towards the end, “Do you think it’s too strong or provocative? I want to make it umph but not too offensive, you know?” He showed a paragraph where he practically called on the Avatar to speak up against the government if they ‘refuse to do their rightful duty, the 100 year war may repeat itself but instead of the fire nation, it’s the non-bending government’.
A heavy weight seemed to fall on Tari’s heart. Could I really do something to help? She questioned herself, watching Johnny smile with pride at his article. Could I really do something to reduce the suffering of my fellow benders? Of my peers? She knew this issue was beating up Johnny, but she never saw herself as capable of influencing it. Thinking about it, she realizes all her friends talk about doing things – Johnny was the only one actually doing it.
“So,” Johnny called Tari out of her trance, “what do you think?”
Tari bit back her feelings and forced a smile, “It’s great. When does the editor read through it?” She had a feeling it was good. She knew what he was going for and if she was anyone else but the person he was targeting, she knew she would feel inspired or angry and support his cause.
“This afternoon.” He gleamed, pressing save on the document. “I have a few more details and photos to add, but otherwise – it’s done and the editor’s job to fix it.”
Tari yawned – partly fake and partly not. She was tired, but she wasn’t tired enough to leave Johnny and Doyoung yet. She just couldn’t be sitting next to someone she know she’s only disappointing every second she refuses to speak up. Her guilt was eating away at her. “I have to get to work tomorrow afternoon. I’m lucky Hendery is doing the 5am shift.” She let out an awkward chuckle, “I’m going to sleep…it’s 2 in the morning?” She said more as a question as she searched around the room for any hint of the time, eventually letting her eyes set on Johnny’s laptop clock.
“Alright,” Johnny smiled softly up at Tari as she stood from her place.
“Good night” she called as she got into her room, her head peeking out the door as she noticed Johnny about to respond.
“Goodnight, Tar.” Johnny wished, looking up from his computer and up at her. “I’ll make sure Doyoung gets into bed okay. Sweet dreams.”
Tari was about to shut the door, but made sure to quickly remind him where the blankets and pillows for the sofa bed is since Doyoung and her moved it a month ago from its usual spot to another spot in the apartment.
As she fell back onto bed, she couldn’t fall asleep. The only thought running through her head; how will I ever be good enough?
Tumblr media
One benefit of working in a café is definitely the fact that the bitter and earthy smell of coffee beans really can wake someone up. Even if that someone slept for a maximum of three hours the night prior.
The café had a cozy vibe. Either music was playing in the background or the soft hum of the TV, plants took over the walls (thanks to the owners being earth benders, these plants were low maintenance) and the floor was full of beanbags and the coziest chairs you can imagine. Today, the soft hum of the news was on – replaying videos from Avatar Day and discussions of current events.
“I know you let me off early yesterday,” Hendery stifled a chuckle as Tari rushed behind the counter to put on her apron – greeting some patrons on her way to the back, “but I don’t think that excuses you for not sleeping last night.”
Tari rolled her eyes and smiled, “Sorry I can’t be a model like you, pretty boy.” She teased, reaching behind her back to tie her apron. “But for real, is it that obvious?”
Her co-worker shrugged, “I mean, it’s mainly that we’ve worked together for how many years now?” He asked rhetorically. “And because I’m assuming you chugged that weird caffeinated tea you drink to wake you up because you’re also faster and jittery than usual. You’re usually like a turtle-sloth.” Tari dropped her jaw in fake offense, before scanning the patrons – noticing most of them already having their drinks.
Hendery and Tari work together most of the time – they’re the two main workers for Iroh and Me. It’s a small local café which is most known for its bubble tea, but it’s still a family café and not necessarily in the center of town – just a bit south of it. So, they really only need two to three workers. They work mostly together but only one of them takes up the morning shift, which is usually Tari, and then the both of them do the afternoon, and then someone – usually Hendery – closes at 11pm. Today, since Tari tapped Hendery out early yesterday, they swapped roles.
“How did you find Avatar Day then?” Tari inquired as the two of them leaned back on the counters to wait for a table to clean or a new customer to greet.
Hendery smiled at the mention – “I met with my older sisters and Yangyang and his sister,”
“Yangyang is the animal-racecar dude right?” She clarified, remembering the name from previous stories of his.
“Yeah, and we had a picnic and just did our usual festivities.” Hendery gleamed. Tari knew he was an avid celebrator of the event, but her focus on of him and his usual festivities quickly changed - what are his opinions on the Avatar? She looked at him inquisitively, making him turn to her and mimic her expression. “What?”
“What do you think of the Avatar?”
“Like the concept or the person?”
“Both, I guess.” She shrugged, biting her lip and trying to hide her anxiety for his question.
He let out a sigh, “To be completely honest, I don’t think there is a current Avatar right now.” He shrugged. The statement itself made Tari unclear about how she should react. “I kind of think it’s just a past story. Like, I have no doubt they existed – but like I feel like it’s an extinct animal or...” He snapped, finding the words to saa “kind of like the fire lord’s power.” Tari looked at him – confused. “Like, the Fire Lord – she exists and the family is very important, like Prince Jaehyun is one of the best fire benders in the world.” Obviously, he hasn’t seen the Osaka Prince, she chortled – her insecurity eating her up inside. She’s beginning to think her insecurity is manifesting into hate for the fire bender. “But they’re power isn’t as strong as it is before, their importance is less. Why do we need a protector anyway right now? It’s not like there’s a war going on.”
Tari had all the answers to that question; she was raised learning them and frankly, Sukiara reminded her of some of the answers the night prior. Hendery’s interest soon turned to her concentrated and preoccupied reaction to his response. “Why? What do you think?”
She quickly dodged the question, thanking whatever is up there that a patron stood up and left the café - leaving their table full of empty plates. “Thank you, have a great day!” She called after them in her customer-service voice before grabbing the cleaning rag and tray from the shelves in the counter. “I’ll get this one.” She winked, sneaking out from behind the counter.
On her way there, she recognized the married couple who always takes a long time to drink their beverages; Mrs Kim Tae-hee and Mr Jung Ji-hoon. She knows them quite well and know they always joke about trying ‘to finish their drinks hot’ but they never do. The two of them always spend an hour seated at the café once every few weeks and just spending time together. Tari bit her lip and did her usual thing to anyone like them; anyone who takes long to finish their drink, making it cold.
“Hey! Haven’t seen you guys in a while.” She smiled, reaching in her apron to grab spare tissues. “How are you guys? Let me give you guys some extra tissues.” One thing Tari learnt in customer service is that very rarely do people deny more napkins.
Ji-hoon smiled, taking his wife’s hand and rubbing it with his thumb from across the table. “Great, Tae-hee just got a promotion at work so this is our first time having a ton of time together in a while.” Tari smiled; she wanted a relationship like theirs. They could be sitting here for hours but just be happy with each other’s presence. Its as if the world doesn’t matter as long as they’re together. She lifted Tae-hee’s Americano and slipped a tissue to be underneath it. While holding the mug full of now-cold coffee up, she concentrated on her fire bending – only bending enough to warm up the coffee. She repeated this process with Ji-hoon’s drink as Tae-hee spoke about being named one of the best stage performers in the performance theater.
“But Ji-hoon also started his own business!” Tae-hee smiled proudly, both of them looking at each other as if the other had all the universe in their eyes. “Todays have been our first off day in months.”
Tari smiled, “Well, let me get you guys two slices of cake as a celebration. On me.” She offered, “Any flavor preferences?” While Tae-hee politely declined, saying it’s too kind – Ji-Hoon requested two flavors; red velvet and chocolate (which he clarified was for Taehee). Tari knew Tae-hee was just being shy, she was shy to order a second drink the first time the couple came in and saw a new barista. “I’ll be back in a minute, let me clean up after someone.”
As she was walking back behind the counter; the tray full of dirty cups in hand, she heard the door chime. She spotted a regular she actually befriended when the same patron spilled a cup of coffee on herself and Tari lent her one of her extra shirts,. It was Tari’s rule to always bring an extra shirt, because she knows the pain of a coffee stain. “Hey Roddie,” Tari sang, grinning at the familiar face.
“Hey Tari,” Roddie sung back, grinning as well. “I would give you a hug but your hands look full right now.” The university student turned behind her, “By the way, these are my classmates ; Chenle, Jeno, and Jaemin. Guys, this is the best barista around.” The three boys behind her waved, smiling wildly.
Her introduction caused Hendery to call out from behind the counter. “Offensive! Guess who won’t take your order today.”
“I recommend you redact that statement; I’m doing something else right now.” Tari leaned, almost like a whisper – despite being at least a meter apart. “Anyways, I know the truth.” Tari winked teasingly, before rushing behind the counter and putting the dirty dishes in the sink for her to clean once she gives the couple a piece of cake each and pay for it using her employee’s account.
Roddie smiled with her whole face and spoke in a staged manner, “BUT HENDERY IS TRULY THE BEST!”. She and her group of friends approached the counter, ready to order their drinks.
Eventually, an hour has passed and Hendery and Tari were back leaning against the counter – coming up with life stories for the few patrons they don’t know well once they ran out of current debate topics or life updates. Afterall, they do see each other every day. As they were two of the four faces that represent the café, they basically know every patron’s name – only do they know a few life stories.
“Tari!” She heard Roddie call from her seat in the back. Her hair was now in a messy bun; a few strands hanging out as she and her group mates sat on a table full of notebooks and their laptops, the three of them obviously studying together.
“What’s up?” Tari asked, rubbing her hands on the front of her apron as she approached, before she slipped her hands into the pockets. “Everything alright?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to ask you something.” The barista raised her eyebrows, indicating her to continue. “What is your opinion, as a bender, on the bending bans?”
Two friends of her’s look insulted, as if Roddie forgot to ask them. “Uhm,” She chuckled, “I mean I don’t use my powers regularly or publicly so like, it’s not a big thing for me. I just hope it doesn’t escalate. But, as long as I can bend at home, I’m good.”
“What do you bend?” One of her friends ask, leaning forward.
I can bend all four elements, and you? She said sarcastically in her head. “I can bend water.”
“Oh, no way!” The one with the vibrant blue hair exclaimed as he pointed at the taller boy with black hair, “Us too. Which tribe are you from?”
To be honest, Tari always forgets the name of her village. She was moved from there when she was 4, she has minimal memories. “Uhm, somewhere really small in the Northern Water Tribe. I think it’s referred to as Karagatan?”
The one with blue hair bit his lip, “Well, I always knew one of the most beautiful towns calls for the most beautiful ladies.” Tari got flustered but hid it behind furrowed eyebrows and hiding her laughter. So he must be a flirty person.
“Jaemin and I are from the center.” The one with black hair rolled his eyes at his friends antics, “Please excuse him, he’s always flirty.” At that, Tari laughed. “I’m Jeno by the way.”
Roddie groaned and dropped her head onto the table, “I don’t get why our politics class is making us learn about these bans and why they’re wrong rather than letting us actually protest and make a change.” She pulled her head up from the table and looked at Tari with the saddest expression she could muster.
The boy – who out of the process of elimination is Chenle seemed to be reasonable. “Noona,” So he’s younger than her, “It’s teaching us both the goods and bads.”
“Yeah, but the ban is so unreasonable!” Roddie was known for her very strong opinions. She’s locally famous for always protesting and calling out the mayor – who conveniently is her father - for his ‘biased’ and ‘unfair laws’. “When I went home the other day to visit my mom, I overheard my dad say something about increasing the ban or making it stronger. I think he’s even banning bending from Avatar Day for next year.” Roddie dropped her jaw, “Avatar Day!” She stressed, “Literally the day we celebrate bending.” Tari’s heart felt like it dropped. Yeah, sure – she doesn’t use her bending much publicly, but it’s still a part of her. She grew up with it. She’s already hiding 3/4s of herself - does she need to hide her whole self?
“Ugh, speak of the devil.” Roddie groaned once more, looking up at the TV and noticing her father is being interviewed on screen. “Can we change the channel?” Tari nodded, expressionless as she tried to figure out how she was feeling about this. Conflicted, but Johnny was right. It is only getting worse. Could she be the one to stop it from getting worse? How can she?
“You think we won’t learn about this in class?” Jaemin asked rhetorically.
“Rather hear it from Mr Nam’s mouth than a rat’s.” Roddie retorted.
Thoughts and inner debates ran through her head as she made her way to the counter where the remote was.
“Benders are proving to be increasingly dangerous to our safety,” Roddie’s father said on the TV, “They are born with something that distinguishes them as more powerful and-“ As much as she wanted to listen in, she turned it off and replaced the ambience noise with calm music. She can’t think of this. She has to ignore it.
But can she? Was Johnny right again about it being her responsibility? Or will she make it worse? Afterall, with his logic – she’s the most dangerous one of them all. She can bend with four different elements with extra powers like energy bending and the Avatar State. What good can she do if she was locked up?
Tumblr media
The café at night was much more different than during the day. The hum of the music filled the café, echoing off the walls. The café was now closed but Tari remained inside, cleaning up anything to make things easier for Hendery to take over for tomorrow. He’d be doing morning shifts until Sunday (when the café closes at 7pm) so that Tari can get her usual sleep schedule for her usual 6am call to work. She was waiting for Doyoung. The few times she would have night shift, Doyoung would always come pick her up.
His schedule at the training gym happens from 12pm to 6pm, and then he goes to dinner with his friends and co-workers, and then he goes to the temple for a few hours to volunteer or do some extra work. So, coming to the café to pick up Tari seemed to be a natural event, especially as he walks past it on his way to the train station for his way home.
Tari pulled out her phone, sitting in one of the booths and texted Johnny, knowing Doyoung was already on his way.
tari: did you see the news today?
Johnny was always quick at responding – even when on missions. At least, with her and Doyoung he is – potentially because he stays at their place a lot, potentially because they call themselves ‘gaang’, something Johnny came up with due to Katara, Sokka, and Aang being the original peas in a pod and Tari heavily refused to be called ‘Team Avatar’.
leach: I went to the press conference – so so so annoying, mayor called it last minute, i wasn’t suppoosed to be working today! glad i went tho, he’s such a dick honestly…think he’s going insane. Can I come over?
Tari chuckled; this is the first time he asked to come over. But she doesn’t know if she want’s to say yes. Whenever she thinks of Johnny now, she thinks of what he believes in.
tari: ask doyoung haha still in the café. First time you asked in a year or so, I’m surprised.
leach: firstly – I asked bc I was outside ur apartment and neither of u were here and I mightve left my copy of the keys in ur place and also bc u seemed upset w me this afternoon
leach: u usually say goodbye  you just left in a rush
leach: im waiting for ur response but im rn in the corner shop nearby. do u want me to buy a ice frostie + dimsum?
She’s upset, but she can’t tell him why. But, she’s also upset that Johnny knows her weaknesses.
tari: I WAS LATE
leach: NO U WERE NOT I KNOW UR SCHEDULE
tari: stalker
leach: *someone who cares abt u a lot
tari: *** stalker
Suddenly, as her phone dinged in her hand, she heard the door chime. She stood up, grabbing her stuff and laughing as she was about to tell a story. “Doyoung, Johnny is a-“
“Not Doyoung, guess again.” She looked up and saw Sukiara again. Sukiara’s deep blue eyes haunted her; her jet black hair with a few stray gray strands running like a waterfall down her back. “I need to talk to you and you cannot keep running away from me.” With that, Sukiara iced the doors behind her. This is the first time Sukiara ever used her bending skills against Tari – she knew Sukiara was serious.
As much as she hated Sukiara with every fibre of her being, Sukiara was also her guardian – the one who protects her and watches over her. As much as she hated Sukiara, Sukiara was practically her mom.
“What?” Tari gave up and fell back onto her chair, dropping her stuff onto the floor.
“You need to train more. Not just once a month anymore.” Sukiara sighed in defeat, falling to the chairr in front of Tari.
Tari let her head fall back. “I came to Sooman to experience a somewhat normal life. To not have the world lay on my shoulders. There’s nothing I can do right now, and even so, if I mind my own business and not call myself out - maybe the best will happen. Plus! I’m not good enough to be the Avatar, Kiara. And the people here don’t need me. If I show myself, the mayor might kill me.”
“You will never have a normal life.” Sukiara almost growled, leaning forward across the table. “You are not able to live your life for yourself. Your life isn’t yours. It isn’t your families or your friends. It’s the worlds. You are the Avatar and your purpose is to protect the world and mankind.”
Tari stood up from her seat, “From what, Kiara? From what?” She sighed, “If I show my powers, how likely is it that the mayor puts me in jail or kills me?” The realization struck her, “To be fair, if he kills me, you might get a better Avatar than me next time.” She chuckled sadly.
“Shut up.” Sukiara growled as she jumped to her feet - matching Tari in height. “Listen, there’s bigger things than the mayor. If you leave now, if you do anything dumb now, you’re just proving yourself right and showing that you weren’t good enough. Train more. Admit your identity. Admit to who you are and stop running away from it, because you’re only doing more damage.”
Before Tari could respond, Sukiara seemed to glide out of there. As her hand touched the handle and dissipated the ice into steam, Tari saw Doyoung approaching the café. Sukiara, having watched Tari occasionally, recognised her roommates face and left the door open, smirking. She could reveal me to him now, Tari thought as she interpreted the cocky look on her face as she approached her roommate, and then I’ll lose him forever.
Doyoung bowed his head gently and thanked her before coming in. Sukiara, as she was walking out, looked back and turned to look at Tari, “You know how to contact me.” She let go of the handle and disappeared into the night.
“Who’s that?” Doyoung asked, eyes furrowed in confusion.
“Nobody.” She sighed, hopeless and full of dread. Doyoung’s eyebrows furrowed more – he can read her easily, he knows she wasn’t nobdoy. Tari shook her head, faked a smile and looked up. She grabbed her stuff and stood up. “No one, just a health and safety person checking for hygiene. She thinks I didn’t do the dishes well and she’s going to tell the bosses” She lied, “Has Johnny texted you about how dumb he is?”

Mrs. Crosby Travels Partner Crate, Quarterly Membership
Travel continues to be a bit tricky these days, but the ever-resourceful Mrs. Crosby managed to charter a private jet for a visit to Berlin. While she wasn’t able to attend all of her originally scheduled stops, she took in several architectural tours with the friendliest of guides (all properly masked with the safest of precautions, of course). They introduced her to a world of inspiration in the natural tones of stone, copper, and brick, and the evening lights that glowed upon it all. Most importantly, she returned with skeins of this quarter’s yarn!
This quarter, we are featuring Mrs. Crosby’s Wanderlust, a cozy blend of 90% Superwash Merino Wool and 10% Nylon. Each 100g skein gives you 120 yds (110m) of bulky weight yarn. Sweater Sock Season!
It is now September, and that is amazing, because fall is starting, meaning we get to pull out all of the best and coziest layers! That means boots, jackets and, you guessed it, sweaters! The only thing better than layering up all of these elements is having a great pair of sweater socks to go with them, and that, dear reader, is what brings us here today.
Tumblr media
Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks styled in various ways, in dark brown, navy, and dark red
Now, "sweater sock" is not a technical term, and it could well be that everybody defines it a little differently, so I'm going to explain what makes a sweater sock in my mind. While we have a lot of "sweater patterned" socks (typically Fair Isle inspired patterns), many of them are a lighter weight than I would consider a sweater sock. Wool is also a traditional sweater material, and we have lots of wool socks, but again, many of them are too thin or too fine a gauge of knit for the sweater sock title. Boot Socks are another subgenre of sock that is known for being thick, which is a sweatery kind of attribute, and there's definitely a bit of cross-over, but sweater socks are less likely to be terry-lined, and again, the gauge of knit is a more important factor when it comes to sweater styles.
Tumblr media
Ribbed M Stockings in navy * Long Cuffable Scrunchable Socks in hunter * M45s in sweet cream
So what is a sweater sock? To me a sweater sock is warm, soft, thick, and knitted on a relatively large gauge (at least as far as socks go), often featuring thicker yarns. Pattern isn't really a defining factor, and many of the sweater socks we will talk about today are solid colors, but if the weight of the sock is right, a Fair Isle or marled pattern can really add to the sweatery "vibe" of a style.
Tumblr media
Longer Thicker Slouch Socks in charcoal * Cotton Slouch Socks in tangerine * Warm & Cozy Boot Socks in light blue
Our DreaM Stockings line is probably the most sweater sock-heavy brand we have, which shouldn't come as a huge surprise given that we designed it! With that said, though, our other house brand, Dreamer Socks, tend to be a finer gauge and thinner material than I consider "sweatery". Look at it this way: DreaM Stockings are a vintage, chunky-knit sweater, while Dreamer Socks are a beautifully fitted, fine-knit cardigan. A cardigan may technically be a sweater, but it's not really the kind of sweater we're here to gush over today.
Tumblr media
Confetti Slouch Socks in black confetti * Confetti M45s in cream confetti
The sweater styles in our DreaM Stockings collection tend to be on the longer side, from knee highs to ultra-long thigh highs. They come in solid, marled and confetti patterns, with a couple of stripey outliers (which are also marled -- we're just doubling down on the cute, okay?). These more uniform patterns make it easy to pair these styles with outfits so you don't have to put a ton of thought into what you're wearing.
Tumblr media
Marled Slouch Socks in dark red, navy and black * Marled Scrunchable Thigh High Socks in grey
Tumblr media
Marled Stripe Knee Socks in thicket * Top-Striped Marled Slouch Socks * Top-Striped Marled Scrunchable Socks in black w/ dark red
Some of our suppliers only carry one or two sweater sock styles, but even though that's not really their focus, the ones they make are definitely worth mentioning! While Foot Traffic makes a lot of fleece-lined tights, leggings, and socks these days, that's not really what we call a sweater sock, in the same way that a polar fleece pullover is kind of "jackety" and not entirely "sweatery" (these are very important technical terms that we, the sock experts, are definitely not just making up on the fly). They do, however, make two styles that we feel are totally sweatery: Cotton Rag Bootsocks and Check Dots Knee Highs.
Tumblr media
Check Dot Knee Highs in ivory * Cotton Rag Bootsocks in granite
Mitscoots also makes two sweatery styles, and frankly they're essentially different colorways of the same sock, but we're fine with that because we LOVE that sock! There is something oddly supple about these, and they stretch like crazy, but also condense down to knee highs weirdly well.... we don't really know how they managed to achieve this, but we suspect that magic is involved.
Tumblr media
Gwen Bootsocks * Whitney Bootsocks
Though our Mitscoots styles shown above are currently sold out (be sure to sign up for restock notifications on their product pages!) we still wanted to include them for the sake of comprehensiveness.  We also have a couple of similarly cozy marled styles from K. Bell and Pook, both of which are currently in stock! All of our Pook styles are on clearance, so get them while the getting's good!
Tumblr media
Pretty Tomboy Knee Socks in black * Pook Knee Socks with red stripes
The brands that only carry one sweater style have all really nailed the sweater sock concept in different ways. Ozone makes the most official sweater sock of all, the Sweater Style OTK, while Tabbisocks makes the ultimate in Japanese scrunchy socks, which comes in about a million colorways, making it a staple for those obsessed with color matching. Peony and Moss, as well as Nouvella, have perfected the texture element of sweaterness with their Marled Cable Thigh Highs and Pebble Ribbed OTKs (also available in a crew), respectively.
Tumblr media
Sweater Style OTKs in beige * Scrunchy Socks in fuchsia
Tumblr media
Marled Cable Thigh Highs in dried herb * Pebble Ribbed OTKs in charcoal
B Ella's single sweater style also happens to be a delightful wool blend, with seasonally rotating colors, meaning that there are often new options each winter. Cronert also makes a fantastic wool sock with a subtle cable pattern to the cuff (which can, indeed, be worn unfolded!), and while it doesn't come in as many colors as B Ella's Bess, they do come in two foot sizes.
Tumblr media
Bess Knee Socks in blue glass * Cronert Ribbed Wool OTK in ecru
And now that we're getting into some animal fibers, it is my duty to present you with our absolute favorite supplier of humanely sourced angora, Orkney Angora. This fiber is collected from rabbits, so it is soft as can be, with a fuzzy "halo" surrounding it that creates an insulating microclimate around your legs! While the OTKs they make are so sweatery that even somebody who has never seen an actual sweater could probably identify them as such, their thermal crews are a little more on the cusp where my definition is concerned. They're a finer gauge than what I would normally consider a sweater sock, but they are so thick and soft and fuzzy that I just can't help myself! These socks defy labels, unless you're just labeling them as "amazing."
Tumblr media
Angora OTKs in charcoal * Thick Thermal Angora Socks in fawn
And now, dear reader, we have arrived at the Fair Isle portion of our sweater socks tour....
Tumblr media
September Sun Knee Highs by Solmate
As previously mentioned, Fair Isle is a classic sweater pattern, often seen in Scottish and Scandinavian knitting, and those northerners know about cold! A lot of the Fair Isle patterned items we carry are actually printed, or else knit on a finer gauge than is appropriate to sweaters, but traditional Fair Isle colorwork involves "carrying" over the unused colors of yarn behind the stitches, which results in an extra layer of yarn, making for a thicker and warmer garment. We carry two brands that make delightfully chunky (and often colorful) Fair Isles, and that is almost exclusively what these brands make!
Tumblr media
Mars Crews * Midnight Knee Highs * Scarecrow Crews
First up is Solmate Socks, who specialize in mismatched (but totally color-coordinated) Fair Isle socks. They mostly do crews and knee highs, and you can often find your favorite colorway in both! We also carry some anklet styles of theirs for summer, as their socks are an 80% cotton blend that makes them comfortable in most climates.
Tumblr media
Dots N Dash Crews in teal * Sunrise Fairisle Knee Highs in teal * Lattice Crews in olive
Along the same sock wavelength we have QT Feet, who also specialize in cotton blend, chunky knit Fair Isles. The difference is that these styles aren't mismatched, and they tend to change up their patterns a little more than Solmate. QT Feet also seems to be a little bolder when it comes to dabbling with bright and unusual color combinations.
And like that, we have finally arrived at the conclusion of our sweatery sock journey! Your definition of what makes a sweater sock might be different from ours, but whether it's about fiber content, pattern, weight or knitting gauge (or some combination of these) we know there's one element we can all agree on: the element of cozy! We wish you all a wonderful autumn, and may your toes be ever cozy.

After The Storm
Tumblr media
Request: can you do a sad fic where the reader is trans, (ftm) and they come out with unaccepting parents, so he gets kicked out of the house and winds up on the street. Mark and ethan drive past him and pick him up from off the street and basically they bond. and give the reader a place to stay
You guys can probably tell I wanted to work with metaphors and imagery in this fic cx hopefully I wrote the perspective well, as it is my first time writing from this pov too. Also, I think this fic is more of a bittersweet fluff than sad? It just kinda turned out that way >> sorry!
Send in requests!

~~
The night was far colder than you expected it to be; it was as if their harsh words and disapproving stares hovered over you like a storm cloud that was ready to strike you back into submission and self-doubt again. Their lightning bolt words stunned your heart as the thundering yells numbed your ears, you tried to ignore it all. You tried to push through and wait until the magical day that they either accepted their ‘daughter’ was never here to begin with, but rather their son always was. And as much as you wished that would have been your reality, it wasn't. Instead, your magical day was when you finally stood up to them, showed them that you're proud to be who you are and proceeded to leave that hurricane household.
You were so happy that you finally could lead your life without them weighing judgment, so happy that you could be free.
Although, you couldn't ignore the fact that being away from your parents, also meant you were without a place to stay.
You thought about asking some of your friends, but you end up going against it, believing you'd end up becoming a burden to them- even though you knew they would tell you otherwise. For the time being, you'd be on your own, you weren't sure where you were going and nor did you really care. You earned enough money that you were confident you'd be okay food wise and if you really wanted to, possibly stay at a cheap hotel until you've decided on a plan.
Until then; however, you would walk the concrete streets of Los Angeles with your duffel bag over your shoulder. The city was an Ice Queen at night, beautiful yet cold and uninviting to those weak at heart and in spirit; while you wished you could enjoy life simply in the present you were in and with the great step you’ve taken in the right direction with it, the looming future had its hold on you, flooding your mind with all the ‘what ifs’ that were the last thing you needed right now.
A heavy sighed passed your lips and while you walked down the desolate street, your only source of light was the stars and moon above you along with the few street lamps. Your legs grew tired and you took a break on a nearby bench that seemed like a haven; somewhere you could relax and take a moment for yourself after having walked so long. Sitting down, you let out a breath you never knew you were holding in to begin with- your bag slumped off your shoulder and it allowed your body to rest, comfortably leaning into wooden panels behind you. It might not have been the coziest situation, but you were thankful nonetheless. And against better judgment, you shut your eyes, letting them rest after such a long day.
It isn't until a bright yellow light shines through your eyelids; you thought it would disappear, but instead, it lingered and soon you were able to pair a voice with this light. “Hey… You alright, kid?”
The voice was kind, refreshing to your ears after all the bitter and hate filled words it heard earlier that day. It held concern and it was sincere, truly curious and worried as to whether a complete stranger was okay or not. His voice was gentle, and without another thought, your eyes opened once again to find the owner of such a caring voice.
He sat inside of a small, silver car whose paint job reflected the light from the street lamp- which only added to the beams of light that already shined in your eyes. You found yourself falling silent as they waited for a response, unsure of what to say or do, wondering if you should even do anything at all.
After a brief silence, another voice piped in and that was when you notice the younger man beside the driver, a small smile made its way onto your lips when you noticed his bold blue hair. You couldn't hear what they were talking about, though you assumed it was about yourself because soon enough the car was put into park- your eyes widened and you could feel your heart start to race. Despite their soft and welcoming tone, you knew it'd be foolish, and possibly dangerous, if you didn't be at least a little bit cautious. You reached for your bag as you anxiously awaited their next move.
It was the blue-haired lad who spoke next, you watched as he exited the car, the ravenette soon to follow. His voice was a bit higher than the other’s, but he gave off the same friendly vibe and you knew that he could see how you were on edge about trusting them. Which was completely understandable, they were strangers after all. “The stars always look better out here, don't you think? There are not as many lights to… uh, what's the word… Oh! Pollute the sky, so you can see a lot more.” He sent you a smile and unable to stop yourself, you returned it.
They got closer, slowly but progressively, and continued to talk about random small things around the three of you. A few laughs were shared between the duo and with each passing second, the storm of anxiety, fear, and doubt began to clear in your mind. By now, you knew they had no ill will towards you, if anything, it was the opposite.
Eventually, the ravenette sat beside you on the bench- setting his elbows on his knees and giving you a lopsided grin, “One day, I would love to be able to rocket myself into space… just so I can explore, even if it's dangerous. I just really love space,” a chuckle slipped from his lips and his warm brown eyes caught your own, “Do you like space?”
For the first time that night, you decided to respond to them, relaxing into your seat and looking up into the night sky. It was serene, the calm after the storm.
“...I do… I was always curious about it, too,” It was a simple response, but from that the three of you found yourselves talking as if you were old friends. It was an energy you quickly grew fond of, one that was simply infectious. So when the conversation started to dwindle and turned to a more serious tone as you started to explain your situation. You were hesitant to at first, but they assured you there wouldn't be any judgment, that this familiarity around you all would remain; with that, you felt comfortable in telling them all that had transpired earlier in the day.
The clouds in your mind cleared as you let it all out, a therapeutic sensation followed as each word fell from your lips, a refreshing, renewing rain helped to heal your mind for that moment. It wouldn't be able to heal it all, but it was a nice start and if you would be able to continue talking to them like this in the future, you knew you would be okay somehow.
“And so… Until I have enough to rent an apartment or something, I'll probably be staying at motels or shelters. Y’know? Just save up the most I can and then I can blow this town,” You chuckled bitterly, a hand running through your locks and shutting your eyes as you dream of smokey French cafés in your future. C'est parfait, non?
The one who you had come to know as Ethan spared a glance to Mark, the ravenette, and they shared a knowing nod. A mutual agreement formed. “You know,” Mark started out, “I have a spare room at my place. If you want, you can stay until you get back on your feet again and-”
“No, no, no, no. Thank you very much for the offer but, that's too much. Really, just talking with you two has been helpful enough.”
“Think of it as a really personable and private hotel-”
“With the sweetest golden dog ever!” Ethan made sure to point out, Mark nodding along with the same enthusiasm.
You sighed and bit your cheek, you felt like you'd be imposing yet… It would be a lot better than not knowing where you would sleep each night. And who could resist an offer that involved the chance of meeting a new dog? You were still hesitant all the same and you had a few questions, but if the opportunity was possibly a timed one, you didn't want to miss it. “I… If it really is okay, then I guess it would be alright- but only until I get the money for an apartment! I can also pay rent, clean, cook, or… well, okay, I can't cook. I burn everything, but I can do the other two things!” You adamantly assured, determined to give back if you were to take their offer.
A tan hand was held out to you and a soft laugh rumbles out of the ravenette’s chest, “It's a deal then.”
You smiled and soon found a light laugh leaving your lungs too, you shook his hand and glanced between the two lads, “Yeah… It is. Thank you, really. I don't know if I can ever show how grateful I am for this but I'll try.”
Ethan placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder and his beaming smile greeted you, sending a bolt of joy through your heart as you finally felt like the last of the storm clouds had run their course and all that was left was a peaceful silence as the sun showed itself again. He gave your shoulder a gentle squeeze and brought you out of your trance with his kind words, “Don't worry about that for now, instead, just let us help you the best we can, okay?”
They say there's a certain tranquility when a storm finally ends it fit; how the calming stillness would bring comfort to those who endured its tyranny. The precious melody of the birds returning alongside the sun: a fresh start born from disaster.

Arplis - News: 15 cozy things for fall you can find at Home Depot
— Our editors review and recommend products to help you buy the stuff you need. If you make a purchase by clicking one of our links, we may earn a small share of the revenue. However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA TODAY’s newsroom and any business incentives. Fall is finally here—and that means the return of football, hearty comfort food, and, most importantly, all the seasonal decorations. But prepping your home for autumn doesn't have to mean pumpkins and scarecrows. Because while those are great, there are other more subtle—and more sophisticated—ways to turn your home into the coziest fall wonderland. To help you add some festive flair, we've rounded up 15 gorgeous pieces of decor from Home Depot's Home Decorators Collection below, from snuggly blankets to fall-inspired furniture. Happy shopping! 1. The coziest throw you can buy Credit: Home Depot A fall night in has never looked (or felt) so good. There are regular throw blankets—and then there are throw blankets like this one that have the softest, snuggliest sherpa lining imaginable. Choose between a classic plaid or a seasonal solid color to toss over your couch or pile up by the foot of your bed. Get the Oversized Plush Sherpa Throw Blanket for $22.47 2. These string lights to hang outside Credit: Home Depot You can even change the color of these LED bulbs to anything from pink to blue. For the most Pinterest-worthy patio this autumn, you'll need a strand of chunky, globe lights—like these from Home Depot which are impact-resistant so they won't shatter easily and can be used indoors or outdoors. Plus, the warm white light they give off (instead of the harsh cool light that many LEDs emit) will add a welcoming vibe to your home. Get the 12-Light 24 ft. Integrated LED String Light for $49.97 3. This overstuffed arm chair Credit: Home Depot Choose the color and fabric that complements your current decor. "This chair is too comfortable," said no one ever. And since fall is the perfect time for curling up by the fireplace, it's also the perfect time to add a plushy accent chair to your living room. This one from Home Depot comes in a variety of touchable textures, too, from velvet to linen to leather. Get the Gordon Brown Leather Arm Chair for $599 4. This organizer that's festive and functional Credit: Home Depot Made from metallic aluminum, this stand is 15 in. tall. Bring a bit of the outside in with this nature-inspired jewelry stand that will spruce up your dresser or side table. Not only does it have multiple branches to hang your necklaces and bracelets on but it also has a handcrafted nest that's made for holding rings and pins. Get the Aluminum Jewelry Tree and Nest Stand for $19.97 5. This quilt to snuggle up with Credit: Home Depot The Binghamton set comes in 4 colors: gray, ivory, steel blue, and chili. We don't know what we love most about this quilt for fall: its cozy warmth, its soft sateen fabric, or the extra texture (and farmhouse feel) it adds to your bedding in a way that a classic comforter doesn't. Another plus? It's heavy enough that you won't get cold at night yet light enough that it's not overbearing on those rare warm days in September. Get the Binghamton 3-Piece Solid Full/Queen Quilt Set for $59.48 6. This luxurious rug to keep your feet warm Credit: Home Depot The multi-colored stripes make this rug very versatile. Hardwood floors are gorgeous—but they aren't exactly foot-friendly in the fall when you wake up on a crisp morning (a.k.a they're freezing!). The solution? This super soft striped rug, which feels amazing on your feet and adds personality to the room. You can also layer multiple rugs in different prints and patterns for a trendy touch. Get the Shoreline Multi 5 ft. x 7 ft. Striped Area Rug for $109 7. This mirror in the season's hottest color Credit: Home Depot You can also get a matching vanity and cabinets in this sage green shade. There's a reason Behr named "Back to Nature" the 2020 color of the year: It's an earthy neutral that helps us reconnect to nature and inspires feelings of calm and harmony in our homes. While you can paint an entire room in the soft green color, you can also incorporate it in more subtle ways like with this framed poplar wood mirror. Get the Shaelyn Framed Wall Mirror for $111.30 8. These spa-worthy towels Credit: Home Depot Wrap yourself up in one of these plush towels when it's cold outside. While some experts argue you should only buy white towels, a neutral gray or khaki is also a timeless color that's perfect for fall. These towels come in all three colors and, because they're made from 100 percent Turkish cotton, are long-lasting, low-linting, and incredibly soft. Get the Turkish Cotton Ultra Soft Bath Towel for $14.87 9. This hook rack to hold fall coats and hats Credit: Home Depot Choose storage that looks as good as it works, like these hooks. Distressed natural wood never fails to make a room feel more homey and cheerful, especially when you're coming in from the cold. So this rack, with its pine wood and brass hooks, is a must-have addition to your entryway (that will also prevent all those coats and scarves from ending up piled on the floor!). Get the Rustic Pine and Distressed Brass Hook Rack for $31.98 10. These moody floral curtains Credit: Home Deport Bonus: These window treatments will keep your home better insulated, too. When it comes to autumn decor colors, think of the leaves outside: deep red and maroon, rust orange, golden yellow. These curtains incorporate all of those fall foliage-inspired hues. And the earth tones combined with the whimsical pattern of leaves, flowers, and vines adds a touch of country charm to even the most modern of rooms. Get the Floral Cottage Light Filtering Window Panel for $19.98 11. This bar stool with an industrial chic vibe Credit: Home Depot You can adjust the height of the stool up to 31 inches. Now that cooler temperatures are here, gone are the days of lounging outside on the deck. Instead, take the party inside—to your kitchen bar, of course—with these on-trend bar stools. The warm wood seat perfectly balances out the more masculine metal accents. Get the Industrial Mansard Adjustable Height Black Bar Stool for $149 12. This ottoman to add extra comfort Credit: Home Depot The Farrow ottoman is available in leather or linen. Is it a coffee table, a spare seat, or a footrest? The correct answer is all three. An ottoman like this tufted one from Home Depot is a great way to incorporate more comfortable seating (perfect for fall parties!) and make your space feel even cozier, especially if it's paired with an equally plush sofa or a soft throw. Get the Farrow Accent Ottoman for $355 13. These natural baskets if you want more storage Credit: Home Depot Each basket measures 10 in. by 11.5 in. Whether you're looking for a place to keep your ever-growing collection of gloves and scarves or whether you need somewhere to stash the summer gear you're no longer using, these decorative baskets will do just that. And they aren't just practical—the hand-woven seagrass adds a warm, natural element that is a must in the fall. Get the Bin Basket (Set of 3) for $68.97 14. This rustic entertainment center that every living room needs Credit: Home Depot The best part? It comes fully assembled. Reclaimed wood adds instant warmth to any space—which is more than welcome on a chilly autumn day. This weathered entertainment center is giving off serious log cabin vibes and would look even better with a few pumpkins or a plaid table runner artfully arranged on top of it. Get the Holbrook Natural Reclaimed Entertainment Center for $699 15. This modern metallic coffee table Credit: Home Depot The glass shelves lend an elegant touch to the table. Metals are very in right now, especially when they're used as an edgy accent piece. Like with this metal-rimmed coffee table from Home Depot, which comes in your choice of three different finishes (aged gold, aged silver, or antique bronze). We're already imagining a few pumpkin candles burning and a hot cup of tea sitting on the top tier... Get the Bella Coffee Table for $179 The product experts at Reviewed have all your shopping needs covered. Autumnal Book Guide: 15 Best Fall 2019 Reads
https://ift.tt/2mxEYh3
Our book section contributors list up the books we're most looking forward to this fall season — from the spooky to the cozy.

There's never a bad season of the year for reading. Whether it's winter, summer, spring, or fall, there's a reading habit that goes oh-so-well with the season. But there's something about fall—when the leaves are changing (at least in some parts of the world) and the nights are getting longer—that makes me want to curl up with the coziest of books or the most deliciously creepy short story we can find (for the latter, might we recommend "Cavity" by Theresa DeLucci?).
Join the Den of Geek Book Club!
Den of Geek's book contributors are no different! I've reached out to all of them to find out which most autumnal of books they're looking forward to reading this fall season. Here are all of our selections...

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
July 23rd, Del Rey
What happens when you release the god of the underworld? Since Casiopea Tun didn't know that's what would happen when she opened her domineering grandfather's mysterious Mayan chest, she's not prepared for a skeleton to put itself back together, become a man, and demand that she accompany him to retrieve the parts of his body stolen by his no-good brother. But Casiopea is used to dealing with bossy, entitled men, which means that Hun-Kame, ruler of Xibalba, may not realize what he's gotten himself into.

I've been waiting for a chance to get this one off my TBR pile since it came out this summer, and with Halloween (and Dia de los Muertos) on the horizon, stories about finding chests full of bones and navigating the land of the dead are the perfect type of creepy to get the season off to a good start. Even better, it's set in Jazz-Age Mexico before it descends into the Mayan underworld, and I'm enjoying every minute of delving into this unfamiliar and darkly magical world from a well-known #OwnVoices SFF writer. I think you might, too...

Echoes: The Saga Anthology of Ghost Stories
August 20th, Saga Press
I mentioned short fiction in the opening—short stories can be the perfect, low-commitment way to wind down the day or spruce up any seasonal party. (Reading aloud isn't just for kids in English class.) This anthology of 30 moder ghost stories from Saga Press was just published in August, and it includes contributions from some of the most interesting writers in speculative fiction right now, including Seanan McGuire and Paul Tremblay. Paired with more traditionally literary authors like Joyce Carol Oates and Alice Hoffman, there is something in this anthology for everyone who loves a spooky story.
The collection was edited by the always-great Ellen Datlow, who is known for her work in the genres of supernatural suspense and fantasy. It's the broad genre reach of this anthology that most intrigued me, as horror has rarely been my go-to genre. However, in addition to contributors like Tremblay, who gets the collection going with "Ice Cold Lemonade 25ȼ Haunted House Tour: 1 Per Person," The Saga Anthology of Ghost Stories features authors who are better known for their fantasy work, such as Garth Nix (who contributes "Mee-Ow," to the collection). The result means that no two stories are alike, and that there is something in here for everyone. Don't sleep on this anthology—it's perfect for the fall season.

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks
August 27th, First Second
#FallReads can be creepy, but they can be cozy, too. (Extra autumnal credit, authors, if you manage to achieve both at once!) It's definitely the cozy category that this graphic novel, from beloved YA novelist Rainbow Rowell and artist Faith Erin Hicks falls into.
Pumpkinheads is the coming-of-age story of best friends Deja and Josie, high school seniors who are finishing up their last ever night working at DeKnock's World Famous Pumpkin Patch and Autumn Jamboree, aka the best pumpkin patch in the world.
"I wanted this book to feel like one of those classic Disney live-action movies – like The Parent Trap or Freaky Friday," Rowell told us about writing Pumpkinheads. "Emotional and earnest, but also a rollicking good time." Um, mission accomplished.

This is one of the most stereotypically fall book you could read this autumn. Set in a Nebraskan pumpkin patch, more specific settings in this fall adventure include The Succotash Hut, The Pie Palace, The Pumpkin Bomb Stand, and The S'mores Pit—and that's without mentioning the corn maze.
"Nebraska has a very Classic Fall Vibe – changing leaves, cool weather, bonfires," said Rowell. "And we really leaned into that in the book. Sarah Stern, our colorist, did such a good job bringing that to life."
"The look that Rainbow wanted for Pumpkinheads was very specific," added Hicks, "and it was based on a pumpkin patch in the state where she lives in. I visited her before I started drawing the book and took lots of reference pictures, and ate lots of snacks. That visit helped a lot when I sat down to draw Pumpkinheads; being at that particular pumpkin patch and getting to experience its whimsy was important, especially as it’s something very different from fall festivals where I live in Vancouver, Canada."
You too can experience the Classic Fall Vibe of Pumpkinheads by picking up this coziest of graphic novels at your local book or comic book store.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
September 10th, Tor Books
“Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space!” is probably the year’s best elevator pitch in fiction, or at the very least in sci-fi/fantasy. And maybe you have been hearing about it all year (I got the chance to read this book back in icy February), but of course it could not be released in any season other than fall.
The turning point of the year is the perfect time to meet Gideon Nav, indentured-servant-turned-swordswoman of the Emperor’s Ninth House, and her sworn enemy/reluctant charge, aforementioned necromancer and heri Harrowhark Nonagesimus. When these unlikely representatives of the Ninth journey to the dessicated First House to prove their mettle for immortality against seven other houses’ necromancers and cavaliers, they engage in skeleton battles and spooky riddles and some fascinating scientific experiments that make for bloody good fun.

A book this delightfully gothy shouldn’t appeal to all audiences, yet is such an utter mood that it does: publishing-industry and not, SFF and not, goths and very much not. When I first heard of its existence, I was ready to write it off as simply not for me—someone who loves fall more for the hygge than the heebie-jeebies, who could not come up with another necromancer story for the life of me.
But I was drawn in by Gideon and her dirty magazines and her desperation to escape the grasp of the Ninth; then her bloody contract with Harrow; then the Clue/And Then There Were None vibe of picking off their sundry competitors. This book is a haunted castle story for people who would rather watch slideshows of people being scared at haunted houses than set foot inside themselves… but it’s also got enough heart and guts to join the canon for those discerning necromancer afficionados.

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
September 10th, Nan A. Talese
Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to dystopian speculative fiction novel The Handmaid’s Tale is finally here! The original, written in 1984’s West Berlin, has always had a spooky fall feel to me, from the New England setting (Cambridge and environs) and the modern tendency to mine the book for Halloween costumes, to the dedication to Mary Webster, Atwood’s ancestor, AKA “Half-Hanged Mary,” an actual 17th century woman who was hanged for witchcraft and lived to tell the tale.
read more: Best New Science Fiction Books
The sequel, set more than 15 years later, follows the lives of three women. One of the strengths of The Handmaid’s Tale is Offred’s claustrophobic narration – the terror of Gilead hangs over her every thought, and we feel it far more acutely as fear than the existential dread or stomach-churning disgust that Hulu’s series creates. For The Testaments, Atwood has expanded to three perspectives, the identities of which should excite book readers and show fans alike. One is a woman in power, and two are younger women who come of age in the time of Gilead.
I can’t think of many things more terrifying than Margaret Atwood’s writing at her best. Let’s just say if you’re hoping to learn more about the origins of Gilead and what happened after that mysterious ending while finding your next Halloween costume, this is the book for you.

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell
September 24th, Wednesday Books
Road-trip stories, at least to American readers, feel quintessentially summery: setting out on the open road during the most unstructured time of the year, determined to find yourself in time for whatever life change awaits in the fall. But for Simon Snow, crossing the pond to the States, it feels more like a gap year.
Having dropped out from the Watford School of Magicks and found the loophole in what should have been a fatal Chosen One destiny, Simon is at a loss for what to do now. So of course his best friends drag him off the couch and throw him into a car to go adventuring through the American West. The Supernatural vibes are strong, and that’s before I’ve even gotten into the vampires and shotgun-toting skunk-like creatures that will make for some very amusing detours.
read more: Best New Young Adult Books
Instead of attending magic college or following in Harry Potter’s footsteps and jumping into wizardly gainful employment, Simon is taking a breather. What makes Wayward Son feel especially fall-like is that we have no idea for how long, or who Simon will be at the end of this break—just that he’s making a change, not just turning over a new leaf but witnessing how the leaves themselves change and how the wind picks up across America.

The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring
September 24th, Tor Teen
It's the 1970s, and Mavi is an Argentine teen who flees Buenos Aires and the military regime that took her mother for a remote girls boarding school located on a remote cliff in Patagonia. The catch in an already complicated existence? The school is haunted. Told from the dual perspectives of Mavi and Angel, one of the "Others" who lives in the house, The Tenth Girl is a novel that will constantly keep you guessing until the very end.
read more: Giveaway! The Future of Another Timeline
This book reminded me of both Jane Eyre and The Haunting of Hill House while also feeling entirely original. It's a debut from Faring, who drew on her own Argentine heritage and her family history in the country when writing the story, and I am eager to see what else this author comes up with. At 464 pages, this is a long one, and a narrative that sometimes prioritizes prose over plot, which could be frustrating for some readers, but the descriptions of this haunted house were luscious enough to keep me interested throughout.
"I just love building Gothic atmosphere," Faring told Den of Geek in an interview. "It's one of my favorite things in anything I write: the gloomy, the spooky, the grand, the forgotten, the abandoned. I love that. So that was always sort of simmering in my brain and my imagination for years." If you like your fall reads with an extra heaping of Gothic atmosphere, then this is the book for you.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
September 24th, Harper
Ann Patchett (author of the highly decorated Bel Canto, among other beloved books) is the kind of writer whose words curl underneath your skin and make a home there. The plot rarely goes where you expect, but not in a gimmicky way. Even when the action is bombastic, the prose feels quiet, powerful, and mysterious. So when I read that her next book, The Dutch House, is going to be “a dark fairy tale” taking place over five decades, I added it to my mental “to read” list.
read more: The City in the Middle of the Night Review
Starting in the late 1940s in Philadelphia when Cyril Conroy buys the mansion for his family, Cyril’s son Danny narrates the book through comings and goings. While it sounds like the book has much of the fairytale trappings we’re used to – a missing parent, children fending for themselves, and of course, an evil stepmother – Patchett is a subtle writer who relishes character, so I’m sure it will feel more magical and strange than Disney-ified and pat.
I’m not a huge fan of typical slasher-horror style books; I like my chills to be more deep-seated and existential than jumpy or gore-y. Grounded in the quotidian familiarity of family and the ways we hurt one another, I’m looking forward to Ann Patchett guiding me on the next journey into the unknown with The Dutch House.

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher
October 1st, Saga Press
T. Kingfisher—real name Ursula Vernon—has written cute books for children and even won a Hugo Award for her graphic novel Diggers. Because she writes such a variety of fiction for vastly different audiences, it became all too necessary for the author to wield the pen name T. Kingfisher when she delved into more mature works for older readers.
In The Twisted Ones, Kingfisher teases the kind of Southern-based horror that threatens to drag you down with it. When the main character Mouse has to clean out her deceased grandmother’s house, she finds her grandfather’s journal that appears to be full of nonsense... until she meets one of the horrible he described. One of the things her grandfather’s journal warned against was a secret colony in the woods. She’s also going to be adventuring in those woods, discovering and confronting these mysterious beings alongside her trusty dog.
read more: Best New Science Fiction Books in September 2019
Add on top of the supernatural scares the ordinary horrors of uncleanliness—grandma was a hoarder, and I know the book’s description doesn’t mention that because she was a little bad at picking up after herself. Anyone who’s seen an episode or two of Hoarders should know that there’s a lot of terror involved with accumulated stuff: the germs, the forgotten memories, the unwillingness to let go of possessions, the potential hazards of piles of things toppling on unwary passersby.
Coupling the supernatural with a mean-spirited hoarder shaking off her mortal coil to leave her family dealing with her mistakes fascinates the Hell out of me, and I can’t wait to dive in (maybe with a gas mask?). The Twisted Ones holds the kind of intrigue and folksy-dread that promises to enrapture the reader. It’s a “girl and her dog” adventure hinting at a forward-thinking protagonist and I’m all about that.

Frankissstein by Jeanette Winterson
October 1st, Grove Press
Mary Shelley first dreamed up Frankenstein on an especially dreary middle-of-the-night in June 1816, during the Year Without a Summer thanks to oppressive levels of volcanic ash in the atmosphere following an eruption. To wit: despite it technically being summer when she, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and other vacationing houseguests stayed inside during their Lake Geneva trip, the vibe was eerie enough that it made perfect sense to compete for who could tell the spookiest story. Which is why Frankenstein will always feel like an autumnal tale.
read more: Frankenstein Adaptations Are Almost Never Frankenstein Adaptations
What makes Winterson’s contemporary take feel especially spooky is how it transplants so many of Shelley’s ideas from 200 years ago—the miracle of reanimation, the devastation of rejection, questions of when a creation stops owing its existence to its creator and instead owns its destiny—in modern contexts that make them as relevant as ever.
I don’t know which lens I’m more excited about: the ethics of artificial intelligence superseding puny human brains; the cryogenics facility filled with dozens of bodies almost guaranteed to be reanimated for some nefarious use; the subplot about a humble sex-doll operation that posits new questions about autonomy and consent; or the fact that our modern protagonist is trans. Actually, what I think I’m most excited for will be the portions of the book that retell Shelley’s story—because judging from the angles at which Winterson reexamines this classic, she’ll know just how to get into Shelley’s head on that fateful night.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
October 8th, Flatiron Books
Dropout Alex Stern doesn’t consider herself Yale University material, which is why it’s extra strange when she’’s offered an easy in to the elite college. Of course, there’s a catch: she’s tasked with monitoring the spooky goings-on of the school’s secret societies. It’s a fantasy novel that dovetails with the real world, digging in to what might be happening when the rich and well-connected of Yale summon up something occult.
Leigh Bardugo’s name has been on my radar because of her very popular Young Adult fiction. Her first adult offering was also her first work to really catch my eye. The appeal of every supernatural school story is to see the uncanny in a very familiar situation, and while I can’t say I’d get into Yale either, the idea of returning to college to hunt down a cult sounds like it sits right in that wheelhouse.
read more: The Ruin of Kings is Must-Read Epic Fantasy
So why is this a good book for this fall? This seems to land on the darker side of dark fantasy: Alex survived an attempted, unsolved homicide before the investigation of the occult even starts. Yale’s secret societies meet in eight windowless buildings called “tombs,” and the ninth house in the title may be a supernatural ninth tomb. Readers looking for fantastical horror around Halloween may very well find it here. It’s a back-to-school story too, so while the audience is primarily adults, the autumn is the perfect season to start walking in Alex’s shoes.
A content note: the author has stated that this book may be difficult for some people, and readers disinclined to encounter sexual trauma in their fiction may want to avoid it.)
I said this at Bookcon, but I'm going to say this here too: I take care with the way I write trauma and I am not interested in misery tourism. Alex's experiences in Ninth House draw directly from my own and this book was in many ways a work of catharsis. HOWEVER.

A Lush and Seething Hell by John Horner Jacobs
October 29th, Harper Voyager
After having recently, finally read The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft my appetite for that quiet, brooding horror has only been stoked. When I stumbled upon this soon-to-be-published piece, I figured I hit jackpot. John Hornor Jacobs is an award-winning author who collects two novellas in this volume: “The Sea Dreams It Is the Sky” and “My Heart Struck Sorrow.” This new release is promising a mix of supernatural and psychological terror, a pairing that does well to get inside one’s mind this time of the year.

“My Heart Struck Sorrow” follows a librarian who has discovered a music recording from the Deep South that might be from the Devil himself (anyone getting any “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” vibes?). Jacobs has written Southern horror that echoed that famous song’s premise before, notably his book Southern Gods, in which a blues man’s music makes some people go insane while also raising the dead.
“The Sea Drams It Is The Sky” has a little less straightforward description, though no less intriguing: This story features an exiled poet trying to decipher a difficult text, a South American dictatorship and “a young woman trying to come to grips with a country that nearly devoured itself.” Points go to the one who can guess if that devouring is literal or figurative, seeing as this author’s work could go either way.

I'm a Gay Wizard by V.S. Santoni
October 29th, Wattpad Books
If I Know What You Did Last Summer decided to hang out with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Lev Grossman's The Magicians, but added to the mix LGBTQ coming of age and romance, it might turn out something like Santoni's debut YA novel, I'm a Gay Wizard.

Originally released as a Wattpad serial, the novel hits shelves October 29, 2019. Main characters Johnny and Alison spend their summer playing at magical spells—Alison is obsessed with magic, and Johnny goes along for the ride. But when a vengeance spell against bullies tormenting them causes an earthquake, the pair are whisked away to the Marduke Institute, a clandestine school for wizards, and told they must leave their old lives behind... forever.
The Institute is more prison than school, but it's also where Johnny and Alison meet cute boys Hunter and Blake, who know a lot more about the world than the two newcomer wizards. While this isn't a creepy, Halloween-y story, it's a perfect back-to-school tale featuring underrepresented main characters (Johnny is Latinx and gay, Alison is trans) from an #OwnVoices author.

The Witches are Coming by Lindy West
November 5th, Hachette
Back in October of 2017, writer Lindy West wrote a column in The New York Times about bad men’s bad faith responses to the #MeToo movement. It was called “Yes, This Is a Witch Hunt. I’m a Witch and I’m Hunting You.” Please read it immediately if you haven’t already, and then you’ll know why I’m so excited for this book, which promises to be an expansion of the themes in her original Times piece.
Witches have been having something of a moment right now, and Lindy West’s choice to invoke imagery used to scare women into silence long before it was used to scare children while reclaiming the “witch hunt” phrase shows a glimpse of her power as a writer and thinker. I picture a powerful witch stalking steadily toward perpetrators and their defenders like the woman in "The Yellow Wallpaper" circles the room at the end of the story: purposeful, terrifying, and a bit mad.

You might know Lindy West from her time writing classics at Jezebel like her takedown of Love, Actually or from the Hulu show Shrill, which is based on her memoir/scathing cultural critique of the same name. Or perhaps you saw or participated in #ShoutYourAbortion, where folks shared their stories in an effort to destigmatize healthcare, or even from her debate with a comedian about rape jokes on W. Kamau Bell’s television show. The point is, West has been leading and shaping the cultural conversation with wit and intelligence for a long time, especially when it comes to gender, violence, and discrimination.
While it may feel like all we do is talk about gender and violence these days, we still haven’t stepped back and parsed what this means for us in the longer term, beyond each individual case, and on the list of writers I’m eager to hear from on the topic, West is damn near the top.

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado
November 5th, Graywolf Press
"Y’all, this book almost killed me dead, but I did it," Machado tweeted last November when announcing her forthcoming memoir. And if that isn’t gothic AF, then I don’t know what is. After tapping into deep-seated terrors—cruel Girl Scouts and awkward writing residencies, a gut-punch retelling of “The Green Ribbon”—in 2017’s collection Her Body and Other Parties, Machado turns that same excavating eye on her own traumas in In the Dream House. With an eerie cover that evokes a V.C. Andrews novel, Machado traces her own escape from an abusive relationship with a charismatic woman in a genre-bending account that clearly took its toll on her (another hallmark of old-school literary horror).
read more: Autonomous by Annalee Newitz Review
What’s more, the story is told in disparate pieces, with each chapter built around a narrative trope: the haunted house, the bildungsroman, erotica. It’s a keen way to compartmentalize and analyze what have to be harrowing memories, and thematically links back to Her Body and Other Parties. Yet there are moments of levity, too, as Machado’s memoir explores hidden passageways of Star Trek, Disney, and fairy tales. The most effective horror (Get Out, Signs, Hereditary) contrasts jarring moments of absurd or even laugh-out-loud comedy alongside the disturbing; I can’t wait to see how Machado holds space for both the light and the dark.
