Went to Ike's Love and Sandwiches for the first time today. I had to try number 65... the Jim Rome. It was EPIC! I added jalapenos, banana peppers and pickles for good Jungle Karma... . . . . . #California #SantaBarbara #Goleta #Montecito #Carpinteria #SantaMaria #Orcutt #SanLuisObispo #Lompoc #Nipomo #PasoRobles #SantaYnez #PismoBeach #Ventura #Oxnard #SantaPaula #LosAngeles #IslaVista #UCSB #Gauchos #JimRome #TheJungle #food #sandwich @jimrome @ikessandwiches (at Santa Barbara, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0U5HsDFwqY/?igshid=hhqac065dv8e

I grow older and my words become soaked with meaning, stacks of references, memories, emotions building up behind each one.
When I came here, a sunflower was a firework of yellow petals; the mind’s image might as well have been clip art. Now, a sunflower is a trail beside cliffs and the space behind the ear. It’s un girasola and bushes that bloom from March to May.
Perhaps my writing becomes less relatable with the passing of time. My words migrate from the communal planet of denotation and settle themselves into my isolated connotation land. Soon I may be unable to distinguish between universal and subjective meaning.
Maybe I should write my own dictionary.
Floor (noun): the base of a room; a library; yellow cubicle desks with complaints etched into the wood.
Bike (noun): two-wheeled vehicle; Goleta pier; butterflies; fields; roundabout; tires that go flat if you ride on DP because there’s always broken glass there.
Ocean (noun): a large expanse of sea; muse; living entity that can make me cry.
Birds skittering in jerks on the black sand. Buzzing seaweed mounds. The beach dalmationed with tar. At six p.m., a pink fanning of sky. Here I experienced my life’s greatest joy and rage and longing and sorrow. I traveled to the far corners of my soul. I am leaving the mold that shaped me, a world that now lives in so many words.
