Randomity: So, You’re Stuck With The Man Who You’re Sure Only Likes Your Brother…
[Why Shouldn't Duncan and Isadora Push Quigley to Do Something for Them?]
“Tell me why I have to do this again?” asks Quigley. He’s currently being push to the front door by Duncan and Isadora, where Widdershins is outside. The man outside has his checkered-pattern scarf wrap around his head, with a grey bucket hat on top, shading him from the sun.
“You’re the one who Widdershins remotely likes,” answers Duncan, “unlike Isadora and me. Isadora especially so. Ever since she went and harassed him about his past within V.F.D.—”
“Again, I did not harass Widdershins! That’s what the Hook-Handed Man said to get back at me for scaring him when I asked him if he ever spent time in jail!” snaps Isadora.
“Regardless if you did or didn’t harass him, Isadora, I think Widdershins would not say no to a trip to the Sunrise International Supermarket in Routin City if one of you had ask,” replies Quigley. “But if you’re worried that much of rejection, I’ll do it. The things I do for you guys…”
[In Which a Development Off-Screen Doesn't Change Anything]
“It’s a shame Quigley suddenly came down with an unexpected cold,” says Widdershins. The man is keeping his eyes on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel. “To hear him say we should go without him…how nice of him to do that! Aye! I say we make the most of this day! And get him something to cheer him up!”
“Yep,” replies Isadora, popping the ‘p’ in the word. She and Duncan are sitting in the middle row of the mini-van; she’s in the middle, while Duncan is in the right passenger seat. “It’s nice of Quigley to decide we should have a day out together. Just us three. Yip-yip, hooray.”
Isadora soon feels Duncan nudging her with his elbow. She turns her head, and sees Duncan glaring at her.
“Be polite,” whispers Duncan.
“I am.”
“Be polite without hinting any sarcasm. We have to get along, and not just for Quigley’s sake.”
Isadora says nothing. All she does is huff, and looks away.
[Isadora Makes it Clear What She Wants From This Trip]
“Is it alright for Duncan and me to wander around?” asks Isadora suddenly.
The three of them enter the Sunrise International Supermarket, which turns out to be a shopping center. The supermarket is the one main anchor, while other businesses surround it.
“You don’t want to wander around the supermarket itself? It’s rather big,” asks Widdershins, taking one the shopping carts.
“I honestly wouldn’t mind—” begin Duncan, but Isadora soon slaps his back. Hard.
“Mom and Dad gave us lots of free reign when it comes to shopping centers!” Isadora gives a smile at Widdershins. “Just as long we have a meet-up location! Safety reasons, you know.”
Widdershins curls one end of his unusual mustache. He then points to a bench, nearby a seemingly stone statue of a woman standing with interesting hand gestures. “Wait for me at the apsara, if I’m not done shopping.”
Duncan opens his mouth to speak again, but Isadora soon drags him away.
“Got it! See you later, Widdershins!”
[Duncan Decides to Drop an Important Observation]
“I think we should have shop around with Widdershins,” says Duncan, watching Isadora browse the aisles of the antiquity store they’re wandering around in. “We use to shop around with our parents for a bit, before we wander off with their permission.”
“We can do that another trip,” snaps Isadora, not looking up at him. Isadora picks up the small dancing figurine of what Widdershins said earlier is an apsara. “A trip with Quigley tagging along with us.”
“Oh. I see what’s this is truly about.” Duncan crosses his arms.
“What do you mean?” Isadora quickly turns to look at him.
Duncan couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s too obvious now. You’re still upset that Widdershins knew about Quigley’s survival before us.”
Isadora sets the apsara figurine down. “I am. With Fiona, I found myself forgiving her quite fast. She’s still a kid, after all. But with him…”
Duncan watches Isadora trailing off, and her walking away. He does nothing but sigh, and follow after her.
[There Wasn't Any 'No Loitering' Sign Around]
“For the last time, we’re not loitering around!” exclaims Duncan. “We’re with someone! We’re waiting for him because he’s shopping inside the supermarket itself!”
Isadora continues to resist the urge to make a rude, snappy comment. She and Duncan were waiting by the bench near the apsara statue. For about ten minutes the two played hand games like slaps, thumb wars, and odds and evens.
And then the woman showed up. Coming out from her small business that is an herbal shop, she began to pester them. Isadora wishes she would just leave them alone.
The woman raises an eyebrow. “I heard that plenty of times before. Why don’t two you hang out by the plaza a few blocks down? It’s more age appropriate than here.”
“Ma’am,” says Isadora at last, “We are waiting for someone. We’re waiting for—”
And Isadora sees Widdershins carrying two plastic bags in his hand.
“Our stepfather,” finishes Isadora. She raises both hands into the air. “Stepfather! We’re here!”
[Quigley is Legit Sick; He Didn't Fake It At All]
“You called Widdershins ‘Stepfather’!?”
Quigley grabs a tissue from the box Duncan is holding out, and soon blows his nose. He then wads the tissue into a small ball, and throws it into the trashcan near his bed.
“I just wanted to get the woman off our backs,” says Isadora, giving back the warm mug of tea to him. “Lucky for me that Widdershins’ philosophy of not hesitating had him going along with the bit. The woman looked so flustered when he called us his stepchildren.”
“When Widdershins told her about you, she took pity on us as well,” says Duncan.
“The tea you’re drinking came from the woman’s herbal shop, with a small discount,” adds on Isadora. “Widdershins made it himself for you.”
Quigley gently blows onto the mug, and then takes a small sip. “It’s not bad tea either. Hm, I guess my sickness got you all to get along better? Especially you, Isadora?”
Isadora playfully slaps him. “You and your high hopes!”
[Bonus: So, Your Deceased Associates’ Children Are Trying To Get On Your Good Side…]
As Widdershins continues to pull out the weeds from the backyard, he couldn’t help but sing a Sinn Sisamouth song. Not hum; sing. The song is a favorite, being one of Sinn Sisamouth faster, upbeat songs. And Widdershins can recall the song enough to feel confident in singing it.
It’s been years since he sang the full song.
“~I toil night and day/For who? For you only of course/Look here, a diamond ring~.”
“That’s an interesting song you’re singing there, Widdershins,” says a young boy’s voice.
Widdershins pulls the stubborn weed from the ground, and tosses it into the bucket with all the other pulled-out weeds. He stands up, and turns around. Behind him are Duncan and Isadora, with smiles on their faces they usually don’t give him.
Duncan has a folded-up grocery store advertisement underneath his armpit, while Isadora is holding a can of honeydew soda. Isadora pulls open the tab, and puts it in front of Widdershins. Widdershins takes the can; it’s not cold at all.
“Thank you,” says Widdershins.
“You’re welcome,” says Isadora. “Like my brother said earlier, that’s an interesting song you’re singing. Can you please tell us more about it?”
“It’s just a favorite song of mine. There’s nothing special about it,” replies Widdershins, taking a sip of the honeydew soda. It’s too warm and too sugary. But a drink is a drink.
Widdershins sees how despite their smiles, Duncan and Isadora give each other brief worrying side glances. They must have thought he would go on a tangent about the song, to delay the inevitable. He feels sorry for them. Widdershins wouldn’t want to deal with himself either.
“…Well, since we have your attention,” says Duncan, finally unfolding the advertisement, “we wanted to ask you something. The weekly mail gave us ads for the new Ordin International Supermarket that opened up a month ago.”
“And looking at the ads, we thought back to our shopping trip to the Sunrise International Supermarket,” says Isadora. “It was fun, looking back at it.”
“And let me guess,” says Widdershins. “You want me to take you two and Quigley there to wander around, while I go shopping for groceries in the supermarket itself.”
Isadora continues to smile, though she blinks rapidly. “Was it that obvious?”
“Aye,” answers Widdershins, and shakes the can of soda. “Too obvious, in fact.”
The smile on Duncan’s face quickly vanishes. He quickly turns to Isadora, and smacks her arm. “I told you giving him a warm soda isn’t the way to go. But noooo! You and your impoliteness!”
“At least I wasn’t going overboard with politeness!” Isadora’s smile turns into a frown. “You wanted to give him the soda in a glass! With ice! Ice, Duncan! That is equally suspicious!”
“Aye,” interrupts Widdershins. “Either one would have given away your hidden motives. Aye, but you know what? I still would give you the same answer.”
Duncan and Isadora’s anger at one another disappears fast. They slowly turn to look at Widdershins. The worrying look from before is back.
“What day do you three want to go to the Ordin International Supermarket?” asks Widdershins.

Summary: A lot of things keep Klaus Baudelaire up at night. These past few nights, however, a letter from specific triplets had been riddling his mind.
warnings: none?
fun bonuses: i spread the genderfluid quigley quagmire agenda + CHUUYA  (irl) SNEAK!
word count: 3626
3:06 AM. ONE.
Klaus laid on his bed as he stared at the ceiling.
It was around 3AM, at least Klaus had thought so. The second Baudelaire was caught up in a spiral of thoughts. It's been… how long? Since he's last seen Duncan– and the other Quagmire triplets. Years, obviously. He thought to himself.
.
.
.
Klaus felt alone. This makes no sense. My sisters are here with me.
The little voice in his head that sounds like him spoke once more, I’ve got company but why am I… yearning for someone else? Yearning's a big word for these feelings, if I’m being honest. I've got bigger worries anyways, the Man with a Beard but No Hair along with the Woman with Hair but No Beard are still at large... at least I think they are.
Klaus sat up to grab a neatly folded paper from his bedside table, he examined the envelope and paused. Should he really open it?
What if it was an emergency... and I ignored their pleas for help? Or what if the Quagmires were telling me and my sisters that they're finally safe...
Klaus opened the envelope, eyes closed. He paused before unfolding the paper that held the contents of the letter that had been the main topic of his midnight overthinking sessions.
He read aloud at a volume that wouldn't wake up his sisters.
Hello Baudelaires, it's Duncan Quagmire. Me and my siblings got a phone for each of us so we could all keep in contact for the meantime. Uhh here are our numbers :D
ISADORA: XXXX-XXXX-XXX
DUNCAN: XXXX-XXXX-XXX
QUIGLEY: XXXX-XXXX-XXX
Anyway! Hope you guys are safe, we… we are not doing the best right now to be honest haha. An accident happened but I'd rather not get into detail because my siblings and I don’t want you guys to worry :) We'll tell you all about it once we see each other again.
Hopefully when this letter arrives, you guys are okay and so are we! I mean I’m sure you guys are okay but… as I mentioned, the accident; not too sure about our situation over here.
I hope that you’re reading this in a time where we’re all together and safe. (Which seems unlikely but one can dream. I hope Hector’s okay too, we got separated after the accident.)
Sorry I couldn’t go into detail about what happened, it’s a lot to write and like I said earlier, I’d rather tell you all this in person.
Sincerely,
Duncan Quagmire (And Isadora and Quigley too…)
PS. If Klaus is the one reading this I'd appreciate it if he contacted me right away, for I have something to say. (I rhymed! Guess Isadora's not the only poet, huh?)
P.P.S. Isadora here! I wrote a few couplets for Violet while we were in the Self-Sustaining Hot Air Mobile Home :) Don’t open it though! (Or tell her, Klaus, or Sunny) I’d rather see her reaction face-to-face!
P.P.P.S. Quigley here. Didn’t want to feel left out :P I hope you guys are doing great! We’re not, but, who cares?! I miss you guys!!! Also found out about being genderfluid. Fucking awesome.
Klaus wore a smile that held a mix of emotions; reading the letter made him happy, yet he was sad at the fact he wasn’t with his friends. That was expected, of course.
He wouldn't admit it to Violet, the girl who gushed 24/7 about the Quagmire poet and the letters the two sapphics would exchange, but he did miss Duncan in a… weird? way.
Klaus knew he liked all of the Quagmire triplets, obviously, yet Duncan stood out from them. Klaus also knew that anyone could like who they want to like, but thinking about him and Duncan? The idea of him and Duncan together made him feel weird– weird in a good way, not the weird he felt whenever he saw Count Olaf.
The “weird” he felt about Duncan was pleasant. What’s even weirder is that Klaus had received the letter, kept it for a week and not yet mentioned it to Violet. He thought he was being selfish and guess what? The middle Baudelaire would obviously affirm his self-deprecating thoughts.
Klaus only heard from Duncan in the little post-scriptums the Quagmire triplet would add in Isadora’s letters to Violet, and Duncan would hear from Klaus in Violet’s letters.
Sometimes Klaus would even hear from Duncan in his dreams, dreams where the two are walking around town together, hand in hand and fingers intertwined; or dreams where the two are cuddling while the rain tapped on the window of their home.
“Are these feelings the same as those of people my age in romance novels having crushes..?” Klaus wondered. He matched his experiences with Jane Eyre, he wasn’t much of a romance enthusiast but he did enjoy a few novels here and there back at the Baudelaire mansion.
Klaus compared his feelings towards Duncan to Jane Eyre’s feelings toward Edward Rochester. Different from the characters in the Charlotte Bronte novel, Klaus grew to like Duncan quicker than Jane began to enjoy Mr. Rochester’s company.
There was also that moment in the novel where Mr. Rochester thanks Jane quite earnestly after saving him from a fire, then that same night makes Jane analyse her feelings towards Edward Rochester… This particular moment, Klaus put a pin on.
“It’s similar to when my sisters and I saved Duncan and Isadora from that ersatz elevator, or when we reunited the Quagmire triplets.” Klaus groaned. However, I was too busy trying to stay alive to think about my feelings.
Klaus rubbed his eyes before closing them. He held Duncan Quagmire’s letter close to his chest.
7:08 AM. ONE.
Klaus was on the floor, his arms were on the bed and his legs supported his body weight. He tried to remove the wrinkles on the letter from Duncan.
“Oh my God… I can’t believe I fell asleep without putting it back…” Klaus frowned. He couldn’t really iron paper, maybe it was an issue of skill for the second-born Baudelaire.
Klaus held the letter and sat on his bed. He jumped to the post-scriptums from each triplet. “I’d rather see her reaction face-to-face…” Klaus’s voice trailed off as he read Isadora’s post-post-scriptum for Violet.
“...I suppose it is rather selfish of me to keep this from her.”
As if on cue, Violet spoke up, “Keep what from me?”
Klaus jumped in his seat, then sighed. “Thank goodness it’s just you. Well… I received this letter from Duncan a week ago. What are you doing at this hour?”
Violet answered, “None of your business.” Then proceeded to snatch the letter from her brother's hands.
“What–? Hey! Be careful with that!”
The eldest Baudelaire sighed, “There’s no return address.”
Klaus turned to his sister, “Yeah. Have you read Isadora’s little note at the bottom?” Violet quickly read what Klaus was talking about, and turned a light shade of pink.
Violet folded the letter and neatly placed it back into the envelope. “Since we’ve both read the letter, let’s buy phones for ourselves later?”
Klaus smiled. “Sure.”
“Oh, and we’re taking Sunny and Beatrice with us, obviously. We’ll also do our grocery shopping while we’re at it.” Violet said as she walked away from her brother's bed.
“G’night, V.”
She shortly replied, “What? It’s 7AM, Klaus.”
12:03 AM. TWO.
Klaus stared at the screen of his phone, then at the Quagmires’ numbers, thinking about whether or not he should contact them. One of them, anyway.
“What if he doesn’t respond?” He asked, and of course nobody answered him; Klaus was the only one awake at the time.
“Maybe if I actually called Duncan instead of just contemplating it while staring at my phone.” Klaus sighed.
What was the point? Suppose that Duncan did pick up his call, what would Klaus say?
“Hey, I miss you a lot and it’s not like I don’t miss your siblings but I miss you in a non-platonic way. It’s like I miss hearing your voice and I miss seeing your handwriting. I miss everything about you and I wish we were together right now. Physically and… romantically.”? Yeah, that seems appropriate. Klaus scoffed at his thoughts.
Besides, it was 12 AM. Was Duncan even awake at this hour?
Klaus sighed. He had read before that sleep patterns can affect one’s mood…
.
.
.
Klaus wanted the rest, but it didn’t come to him easily.
12:03 AM. TWO.
“Why isn’t he calling?” Duncan frowned.
His sister groaned. “Duncan, it’s 12 AM. Give it a break, he’s probably asleep.”
Duncan scoffed, “Him? Asleep at 12 AM? Sure he is.” He chuckles and rolls his eyes.
“Ugh, Duncan, please go to sleep already, he’ll probably leave a voicemail or two.” Isadora closed her eyes and forced herself to sleep after that short conversation with her brother.
Duncan sighed, maybe he should sleep on it, maybe Klaus would leave a voicemail or two; but what if he doesn’t? What if the Baudelaires didn’t receive their letter? Was Duncan supposed to write a return address in the letter? If he did, would their enemies find out?
Duncan sighed, “I guess I should sleep on it, hopefully something good happens tomorrow,” and tucked himself to sleep.
8:48 AM. TWO.
Duncan woke up and the first thing he did was check his phone, “Nothing. I woke up expecting nothing.” Duncan then feigned a smile. “This is great! Everything is great.”
Everything was not great.
What Duncan thought would be the least of his worries (i.e. his crush on a certain Klaus Baudelaire, and not his and his sibling’s well-beings), was very much at the top of his list.
Quigley, having sensed that something was wrong, approached Duncan with open arms. “It’s okay, he’s probably thinking about what to say. I mean, you know him! He thinks everything through. Like, the dude’s really thorough. Or maybe he’s still asleep!”
Duncan smiled at his brother and accepted the hug. He doesn't hug his brother back, however. The two pull apart. “Thanks. I’ll go wake up Isadora, you could go prepare breakfast for us, if you want to.” Quigley hummed in response and Duncan walked over to where Isadora slept.
It’s moments like that which make Duncan thankful to the Baudelaires that he’s together with his siblings.
8:50 AM. TWO.
Klaus eagerly sat up on his bed with a smile on his face.
“You’re looking rather chipper today. Have you finally got in contact with Duncan?” Violet asked.
He turned to his sister and shook his head. “Have not... yet. But I’m about to! I’m texting him right now. And then I’m never looking at my phone again.”
The eldest Baudelaire was holding Beatrice II so she put her down, then lightly hit Klaus on the shoulder.
Klaus hissed. “What was that for?!”
Violet sighed, disgruntled. “What do you mean you’re never looking at your phone again? One: that was pricey and two: what if Duncan replied? What if he says he wants to call you?”
She crossed her arms, “You know, for an academically intelligent person, you’re incredibly stupid when it comes to stuff like this.”
“Says you.” Klaus retorted. He was too prideful to admit Violet’s right. Plus, another word from Klaus and Violet would bring up how he called her “stupid, with an S.”
.
.
.
“Unbeknownst to you, me and Isadora have been talking. Would you like to know what we’re talking about?” Klaus shook his head.
“What do you mean ‘unbeknownst to me’? I proofread some of your letters!”
Violet continued talking and ignored her brother's glaring, “And unlike you, I contacted her first! While you were asleep, I woke up early in the morning, around 2 AM, and called her. We talked for three hours, and you can’t even contact one of Isadora’s brothers!” She laughed.
“Shut up.” Klaus groaned, “I’ll text him, okay? And I’ll eagerly await his response.” He forced a smile at his sister.
Violet slyly smiled back. “You’re all talk but no bark.”
Klaus tilted his head with furrowed brows. He held his glasses to prevent it from falling. “I think it’s ‘no bite’.”
Violet then scoffed. “No? I’m pretty sure the phrase is “all talk but no bark”.”
Klaus stared at his sister, “I meant that the phrase was “all bark but no bite”. Anyway, I am going to text Duncan right now.” He proudly said.
“A sincere good luck to you, my dear brother.” Violet picked up Beatrice II, “I’ll go feed her.” Klaus nodded and started typing on his phone.
.
.
.
klaus: Hello Duncan, I hope this message finds you in good health. I received your letter a week ago but have only opened it now, my apologies. Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: hi! you actually got the letter :D
i was pretty worried it wouldn’t get to you guys. i had quigley help me mark your possible location T_T theyre a great cartographer.
but, im glad it reached you!
you don’t have to write your messages like that y’know
klaus: Dear Duncan, I apologise once again for only contacting you now. Violet, Sunny, Beatrice II, and I all went out today to buy our phones. Although I do agree with the part where you said Quigley is a great cartographer. His skills have continued to help us all, it seems. Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
Dear Duncan, I see you used ‘they’ on Quigley. I’m not sure if that was a grammatical error on your part? Quigley also mentioned something about being ‘genderfluid’ in your letter, may I ask for you to explain those to me? Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: oh yea it [genderfluid] means the way quigley presents himself ranges from feminine to masculine to androgynous. it could also be a mix of those three.
being genderfluid (i think) also means that his gender is… fluid!
the ‘they’ for quigley wasn’t an error! they told me they wanted he/him and they/them pronouns be used to refer to them. i make sure to switch it up in sentences!
klaus: Dear Duncan, So you mean Quigley is like Chevalier d'Eon? French soldier who lived openly as a man and a woman? Pardon me for bombarding you with questions. Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: you know what ? yeah.
also
you don’t have to add a “dear [name]” and “sincerely, klaus” to every message hahaha
klaus: Dear Duncan, But it’s fun. :( You also told me in your letter that you have something to say to me? Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: ah, that? nothing. just rambling.
klaus: Dear Duncan, It’s alright. I won’t press any further, I don’t want to invade your privacy. :) Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: mhmgfdkhmhm you're too kind ☹❤
klaus: Dear Duncan, What does /that/ mean? It’s like you just put random letters together. Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: yeah thats what I did! its called a keyboard smash ;P u could try it, you know!
klaus: Dear Duncan, Oh, okay! I understand. Let me try. Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
Dear Duncan, d Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: That is certainly something.
but there is something I’d like to tell you! Just not right now, sorry
klaus: Dear Duncan, That’s okay! Might I ask, is this related to the accident you mentioned in your letter? Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: it isn’t 😅 it’s personal stuff
klaus: Dear Duncan, Oh, I see. I have something to say too.. I’ll just send it and go. Uhuhhfhfmmd (I'm pretty sure I nailed this keyboard smash you speak of.) I think I’ll say it later. May I call you tonight? Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire.
duncan: youre free to call me anytime! i wouldn’t mind at all!
you did nail that keyboard smash! nice one :D
klaus: Dear Duncan, Thank you. I look forward to calling you. Sincerely, Klaus Baudelaire
10:07 PM. TWO.
Klaus stared blankly at his phone, specifically at Duncan’s contact details. Should he even call Duncan? Of course, right?
He said I’m free to call him anytime, but what if I was a bother? Klaus Baudelaire, get a grip of yourself.
Klaus sighed and put down his phone. “If I waited until I’m ready, I’d be waiting my whole life.” He told himself. He took a deep breath and called Duncan.
Thirty-three seconds.
It took Duncan Quagmire thirty-three seconds to pick up the call, but it felt like an hour to Klaus.
“Hey, it’s Duncan!”
Klaus smiled and breathed out, “Hey.”
There was silence.
.
.
.
Klaus started the conversation, “It’s… it’s been a long time since I last heard your voice.”
All Duncan could reply with was, “Haha, yeah. I could say the same about you.” Duncan rolled his eyes at Isadora, who gave him a thumbs down. “You said you were going to tell me something.”
Klaus nodded at Duncan's statement. Ah wait, he couldn’t see that. He pushed his glasses up before he spoke. “I just wanted to say that I missed you.”
Klaus couldn’t see Duncan’s reaction to his statement since they were very far away from each other but hearing that made Duncan’s heart flutter.
Both boys’ faces were red, and both of them had siblings to tease them about it.
“I missed you too.”, was all Duncan mustered. A silence fell upon the two boys’ conversation yet again, it was pleasant.
“Have I ever told you about one of my favourite authors?” Klaus asked. He had thought about telling Duncan about the weird feelings he’s been having about the Quagmire that night, but Klaus thought it could be a topic for another day.
“No, I don’t think we’ve got the chance to talk about such trivial matters.” Duncan’s voice brought Klaus out of his thoughts.
Klaus frantically looked around him. Was it really the time to ramble to Duncan about his interests? “Right. Well, um, I really like Herman Melville. He’s one of my favourite authors. I particularly enjoy the way Melville dramatises the plight of overlooked people, such as poor sailors or exploited youngsters– kind of cool of him.”
“That’s quite interesting. Perhaps you could read some of his works to me once we see each other again.” Duncan commented.
Klaus smiled to himself, “I’d love to.” He tried not to sound too enthusiastic, so Duncan wouldn’t think that reading a book to him and talking about how much he loves the said book was all Klaus thought about. “Ah, I also admire Hammurabi! I used to read Hammurabi’s Code back when… when…” Klaus’s voice trailed off into a heavy sigh.
“It’s alright. You don’t have to force yourself to talk about such personal topics.” Duncan replied, then asked Klaus about poets since “Isadora’s been writing things other than couplets”.
“Oh! Uhm…” Klaus thought about which poet to talk about. “Well, my least favourite poet is Edgar Guest. He was a writer of limited skill, I'm not one to diss on poets but Edgar wrote such awkward, tedious poetry on hopelessly sentimental topics. I mean, if I had to choose a poet, probably Nakahara Chuuya. He was influenced by Dadaism and other experimental poetry but I do enjoy his works!”
Duncan hummed and smiled. Although Klaus wouldn’t see him smile.
Klaus tightened his grip on his phone. “Sorry, if I’m talking too much. You could tell me, you know! I won’t get mad.”
Duncan replied, “You don’t talk enough, actually, we haven’t seen each other in over a year! I don’t care about how much you talk. Hearing your voice makes me feel… safe? I don’t know. There are times when I feel alone and do you want to know what I think about?”
Klaus stayed silent, eager to listen to Duncan’s words.
.
.
.
“You. I thought about you. I missed you so much, Klaus Baudelaire. It’s silly! I wish I could hug you right now and… I’m so glad I can hear you talk right now, I love listening to you talk about all the books you’ve read and the authors you admire, as well as the authors you have a distaste for.”
Klaus was biting his lower lip the whole time Duncan spoke. He let go and asked, “What are you trying to say, then?”
Duncan sighed. “I’m saying I like you, Klaus.”
“Ah.”
.
.
.
.
.
.
“Klaus? Are you there?”
Klaus pushed up his glasses and answered. “You know… I received the letter you sent almost a week ago but I didn’t think about telling Violet about it as soon as I did.” He dryly laughed at his selfishness. “I felt the need to keep this letter to myself, like a schoolgirl receiving a note from the guy she likes. I… I like you too.”
Duncan chuckled. “You like me.”
Klaus sighed, “Of course I do. I mean, why wouldn’t I? A journalist and a researcher are the perfect pair. Plus, you’re charming, intelligent, cute, talented, have neat handwriting, kind, noble, brave.” While Klaus listed those reasons for liking Duncan, he knew that no words could express just why he likes Duncan like that.
“So are you.” Duncan replied. A silence fell upon their conversation yet again.
“Well, I suppose I have to go to sleep. It is 10:24 already.” Klaus remarked. Despite that, he didn’t want to end the call. Ever.
Duncan hummed, “Yeah, me too. Good night, Baudelaire.”
Klaus slowly positioned the phone in front of his face. He looked at Duncan’s caller ID before he replied, “G’night Duncan.”
Neither of them ended the call.
Well, Duncan had to. Klaus overheard Isadora yelling at Duncan to go to sleep already.
“Good night, Klaus.”
Klaus smiled and replied. “Good night again, Duncan.”
For the first time in what felt like ages, Klaus fell asleep contentedly, thanking the world for Duncan Quagmire's presence in his life.

*st4 vol1 spoilers kinda*
I really wanna write an asoue AU that's based of stranger things, where prufrock prep is built over the upside down. Basically vecna just shows up and starts killing people- I guess count olaf wouldn't exist in this fic- and isadora is the one who gets vecnad and violet saves her ofc 💜 (and ya'll thought I was done obsessing with viodora for stranger things, I can multi-task bitch) It might be fun to try and do before September, along with the prompt I reblogged a while ago.
(For those who only follow me for ST and have no idea what I'm talking about, it's for my other fandom ASOUE)

hi can i req a quigley quagmire x fem reader fic?? maybe has something to do with him being jealous + lots of fluff <33
Jealousy Gets You Nowhere (Quigley Quagmire X Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: Quigley doesn’t like the fact that Y/n and Klaus are friends.
A/N: AU where the Baudelaires and Quagmires aren’t orphans lol
***
Quigley Quagmire, like his siblings, always tried to stay optimistic. He believed that looking for a light would prevent you from getting lost in darkness. He was very trusting, quick to make new friends.
So it surprised you when your boyfriend didn’t seem to like one of your new friends, Klaus Baudelaire, that much.
You thought they would’ve gotten along perfectly. They were both interested in learning, especially about niche subjects. They were highly intelligent. Duncan and Isadora seemed to take a liking to Klaus, and usually the Quagmire triplets made pretty similar decisions when it came to who to befriend and trust.
Luckily, Klaus didn’t seem to notice. He didn’t notice how quickly Quigley disguised his displeasure when you introduced them to each other. He didn’t mind when Quigley gave a curt nod instead of shaking Klaus’ hand that was reaching out to him. He didn’t voice his confusion when Quigley’s eyes started darting between him and you with anger and accusation.
But you did. You saw it all, but had no idea why he was acting like this. He was just fine before you opened the door for Klaus. It’s not like Klaus was rude to Quigley in any way. But you had to hold back your questions until the Baudelaire boy had left, not wanting to make him feel unwelcome by pointing out Quigley’s behavior.
“Are you okay?” You asked your boyfriend as soon as the front door closed behind Klaus. You turned to see his expression was noticeably brighter.
“Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?” He asked, acting like his entire encounter (or lack thereof) with Klaus hadn’t happened. “Come on, Mom’s making lunch.” He held his hand out for you to take. You sighed before smiling at him. Maybe Quigley was just having an off day and didn’t want to be around a new person. So you decided to let it go.
“Okay.” You took his hand and made your way to the kitchen to see what Mrs. Quagmire was making.
***
If Quigley was having an off day, then he must have been having an off month. Whenever you as much as mentioned Klaus, sourness overtook him, and you had no idea why. But you had a plan to fix it. Klaus had invited you to the library for the afternoon and, with his permission, you dragged Quigley along. You had a feeling that if he knew Klaus would be there, he would make up some excuse to keep the both of you from going. So you decided to just “forget” that little detail.
“Hey, Klaus!” You whispered excitedly to your friend when you spotted him at a table, a small pile of books on it with one open in front of him. He lifted his head to smile at you and your boyfriend.
“Y/n, Quigley! Glad you could make it.” He responded in the same hushed but delighted tone. Quigley pulled out a chair for you to sit in and sat between you and Klaus. Your boyfriend looked at you, irritated that you neglected to tell him that this wasn’t a date to the library but a group hangout with someone he couldn’t seem to stand.
“Sorry we took so long. Quigley needed some convincing to get out of the house.” You said. Klaus waved you off.
“I get that. If I’m being honest, I’m really only here because I’ve read every book in our library.” It amazed you how big of a reader Klaus was. He soaked up every piece of information like a sponge that never stopped expanding.
“Every book?” Quigley asked, arms crossed. He seemed just interested in how Klaus could manage to read so much, but you could tell that he was in disbelief that he could do such a thing. As if it was impossible and Klaus only said it to be impressive.
“It took a while, but yes, every book.” Klaus smiled at your boyfriend, before looking at you. “Speaking of books, I found that one you recommended to me. It’s very interesting so far.”
“I knew you’d like it!” You grinned, seeing that the book you had suggested to Klaus was the one he was reading now. You stood from your seat. “I’ll be right back. I’m gonna grab a book I’ve been looking for.”
“I’ll come with you.” Quigley said eagerly. He stood up and pulled you away from the table and towards the maze of bookcases, despite not knowing what book you were looking for. You started leading the way when he was about to pass the section you knew the book was in. “Why didn’t you tell me he would be here?” Your boyfriend asked with annoyance as he watched you search the shelves.
“You wouldn’t have come if I told you.” You shrugged. “What’s your problem with Klaus, Quigley? He’s been nothing but friendly to you since the start.”
“Oh, and I bet he’s been just friendly to you as well.” Although your back was turned to him, you could feel his eyes roll. You turned around.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Don’t tell me you’re blind, Y/n.” Quigley huffed. When you didn’t budge, he started to do an impression of your friend. “Look at me, I’m so smart. I’ve read every book in my library. I’m such a genius. Oh, Y/n, I love your book recommendations. I’d read every book under the sun if you suggested it because I love words!” You had to hold back a laugh. Sure, it was funny, but this was your friend that Quigley was making fun of.
“He doesn’t sound like that.” You said as you turned back around, trying to find the book you wanted.
“I don’t know. I think I was spot on.”
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were jealous.” Quigley didn’t respond. Finally spotting the book on a higher shelf, you looked around for a stool to drag over. You set one up and looked at him. “Oh my god, Quigley, you are jealous.”
“No, I’m not.” He rolled his eyes, but he moved to stand beside you when you stood up on the stool. Even though you were balanced, he put a hand on your hip, just in case.
“I think you are.”
“I’m not.” He said with finality. He glanced up to see you pull out a book. “Did he recommend that to you?” You smiled, taking his hand as you stepped down to the floor.
“Nope.” You turned the book cover to him. “You did.” He looked at the title and it was indeed the book that he was talking to you about earlier that week. He didn’t technically suggest it for you to read, but he knew that you liked trying to show an interest in the things he was interested.
“Oh…” He didn’t really know what to say now. You squeezed his hand.
“Klaus and I are just friends, Quigley. I only have eyes for you. I’m dating you, after all.”
“I’m sorry.” He said sheepishly.
“I’m not the one you should be apologizing to. Klaus has been nothing but kind, and your jealousy made you a bit of a jerk.” You started to walk back to the table, pulling him with you. “Come on. Time to say sorry.”
Quigley tugged you back before the two of you could get too far. Wrapping his arm around you, he kissed your forehead before resting his head on yours.
“I’m sorry, N/n. I just don’t like sharing you, I guess.” You smiled.
“It’s okay. You just have to get used to it.” He nodded and the two of you broke apart, hands still interlocked. “And get used to it fast, because I’m having lunch with his sisters tomorrow.” Quigley groaned behind you as you two walked towards the table.
“There’s more of them?”

I was just stalking through all of my old WIPs, and so here's a comprehensive list (that no one asked for) of all the ASOUE fanfictions I scrapped:
A character study on Quigley Quagmire, focusing on his upbringing, him being a 'problem child', him being diagnosed with ADHD and depression, etc.
A character study on Quigley experimenting with gender roles: a sort of 5 + 1 thing of them coming to terms with gender non-conformity
A Quiglet oneshot of Violet doing Quigley's makeup.
A character study/Quigley-centric fic that focused on his insomnia and how he'd already discovered the tunnel system under their house from his late-nights wandering the mansion
A dunklaus fic where Duncan was covering a story about Klaus, a reclusive artist who gifted his art rather than selling it. Duncan gets a little too involved.
A dunklaus AU fic where Duncan took a job as the Baudelaire's gardener
A dunklaus + Quiglet + Beamony AU set in WW2
A Viodora fic that was just a collection of Isadora's poetry written across the time she got to know Violet
A dunklaus au where they were both university professors
Dunklaus fake-dating AU where they pretend to date to get Violet off Klaus' back about getting over Fiona and finding love again
A Quiglet one-shot character study from Quigley's POV, him moving on from Violet
A Dunklaus AU taking inspiration from Anne of Green Gables (1800s setting, academic rivals, accidentally starting VFD)
A dumb modern Quiglet AU where they meet at a concert, Violet realises Sunny has run off, and her and Quigley have to find her. They bicker a lot because they disagree on which album is their favourite artist's best one
A Dunklaus post-canon fic where Klaus becomes a famous author under a nom de plume and Duncan stumbles across one of his books that is about him
Quiglet post-canon fic where the Baudelaires find Quigley after he failed to save his siblings
(Actually finished, just never posted it because it's rubbish) Dunklaus sorta reincarnation oneshot where Duncan works in a museum and Klaus is an immortal being who consistently is his muse in every lifetime. One of Duncan's favourite marble statues in the gallery was actually created by him, for Klaus, hundreds of years before but he doesn't remember until he sees Klaus again
Dunklaus oneshot where the whole group attended an actual boarding school. No olaf or anything. Just a wintery plot-less thing
(Also finished, also too shit to post) Modern Dunklaus one shot where Duncan runs a record store with his siblings and Klaus comes in one day. Literally just everyone teasing the two for 6k words straight. (favourite excerpt: '“So, why didn’t you ask him out?” Isadora asked, probably aiming for casual, except the way she was leaning on the wall like she was posing for an 80s boy band poster, and the way her voice was just a bit too high pitched, meant she wasn’t being very convincing.
Duncan gave her a flat look. “I have had two conversations with him,” he said, turning back to the receipt he was marking and ignoring the look she was giving him, which solidly said stop being purposefully obtuse.'
Post-canon Violet-centric Quiglet one shot. Just Violet reminiscing and moving on
Dunklaus AU where the Baudelaires are exchange students from France to Prufrock Prep. Extremely angsty and absolutely nothing happy happens. Just wanted to exercise the French Baudelaires headcanon
(Alot of this one was already written) Dunklaus AU where they're partnered up for a VFD mission
Quiglet magical AU where Quigley is a magical creature that lives in the woodland behind Monty's house where Violet and Klaus move after they're orphaned
Dunklaus and Quiglet (but not the main focus) - AU where the Baudelaires leave with Lemony after the fire at Hotel Denouement and become increasingly morally grey. When they reunite with the Quagmires a year later, they're practically unrecognisable from what fighting both against and with VFD has done to them
Violet and Klaus character study on how they deal with their grief; there was a little bit of Viodora and Duncan and some funny antics. The only WIP on this list entirely in French. Never posted it because there would be no interest and it didn't have a plot particularly
I'm pretty sure there are more that I just can't find or deleted but yeah...God there's a lot. These span over several years of being obsessed with asoue and ships in the fandom that I fell in love with that had (and still have) a painful lack of attention online, so I made my own content

Hi Gabriella! I am mostly new here, but I have read your fics and they really stole my heart 😊. Could I request a 🎉 for Klaus Baudelaire with the song Can't help falling in love by Elvis Presley?
Nela 💜
Thank you so much Nela! This means so much to me! 💖 Thank you so much for requesting this and I had fun writing it.

Can't Help Falling in Love | K.B.
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since Klaus has been in the city, considering the fact that he had been staying at an isolated island for the past few years.
They had decided to wait until Violet had come of age before returning back to the rest of the world, considering their history would give them a hard time in finding a job and the fact that they had a toddler to sustain.
After a long journey, the four of them finally reached the dock - they had yet to find out what city they’re in but at least they were on land.
Violet picked Beatrice up, not bothering to anchor the boat to the dock as they won’t be needing it anymore.
“I guess we have to stop by the bank first.” Violet mused.
“Yeah,” Klaus agreed, holding on to Sunny’s hand, “Then we can try to look for a place to stay.”
“Or something to eat.” Sunny added.
The Snicket and three Baudelaires waved their way through the traffic, stopping once they had found themselves in front of the building that had the name Sunside Banking glittering under the sunlight.
“I guess this is it.” Violet said, exchanging a look with her brother.
Pushing the glass door, they were hit with the cold air coming from the air conditioner. A nice lady immediately assisted them without question.
Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad after all.
The bell gave a small ding as Klaus pushed open the door, he saw an ad saying that the store needed an extra helper so he decided to take a chance.
Breathing in the familiar scent of books and looking around at the tall shelves, Klaus felt like it was his lucky day - something he hasn’t felt in a long time.
“How can I help you?” A voice suddenly said, pulling his attention towards the counter.
Now he knew what the poets were talking about: how he would feel that the breath had just been knocked out of his lungs, how everything else would fade away and you were the only one his brain could focus on, how he would feel his heart racing faster than the speed of light.
To put it short, it was wonderful. He never felt this way with Isadora Quagmire, his first love, or with Fiona, his first heartbreak. It was like having a crush but make it ten times better.
“Hello?” Your voice brought him out of his trance. “Are you okay?”
He chuckled, running a hand through his hair, “Yeah, I was actually planning on applying for the job opening?”
“What’s got you smiling like that?” Violet asked her brother with an amused smile.
Klaus shrugged, mind still occupied with the thought of you, “Nothing. I already told you - I got the job.”
Violet nodded, putting a blanket over a napping Beatrice, “Yeah, but your smile is telling a different story.”
“He’s in love.” Sunny walks into the room, carrying a tray of freshly baked cookies.
“Aha!” Violet exclaimed as Klaus gave no protest to Sunny’s claim, “Who is she?”
Klaus sighed in defeat, taking a cookie from the tray, “Her name is Y/N and she works at the bookstore I just got a job in.”
“That is literally your dream meet-cute.” Violet teased.
“You didn’t ask her out, didn’t you?” Sunny said.
“Of course I didn’t.” Klaus defended, “I just met her - why would I? She might think that I’m some sort of creep.
It’s been three weeks since Klaus had first met you and things have been going smoothly so far.
Violet had been egging him to tell you how he feels and he already did his research to try and ease his mind. But it’s like no one can agree on the perfect way to ask a girl out.
The two of you were busy shelving the new books that had just arrived that morning.
Truth be told, he didn’t have a hard time making conversation with you, frankly it was the opposite. He loved talking to you, he loved picking your brain at topics that he couldn’t discuss with Violet or Sunny due to their different interests.
“I just thought of a quote.” Klaus suddenly said out of the blue, picking up another stack of books from the box, “I can’t really remember where I read it but it goes ‘Wise men say only fools rush in’-”.
“‘But I can’t help falling in love with you.” You finished, looking over at him with a smile.
“Yeah.” Klaus cleared his throat, ignoring the heat rising up to his cheeks as he returned to the task at hand.
A moment of silence passed between the two of you before you spoke up.
“Was that your way of asking me out?”
“I-I. It was. Probably?” Klaus always seemed so composed, this was the first time you saw him trip over his words.
“It’s okay if you just want to stay friends, I just really wanted to-” He was once again interrupted but this time, by your lips on his.
“Wow.” Klaus breathed out afterwards, making you giggle, “Please tell me I’m not dreaming.”
“Nope. Nope at all.” You answered, fixing his glasses that had been knocked askew.

Good Things Find Their Way Back (Wicked Way Exchange Fic 2023)
Tumblr media
Story Summary: Violet Baudelaire knew better than probably anyone that some stories simply had no happy endings, and though it would be easy to believe that her own life and that of her siblings was one such story, a cloudy, quiet day at Briny Beach and an unexpected reunion has her questioning if perhaps they had a chance at a happy ending after all. Maybe, just maybe, no matter how much they had lost, good things could still find their way back to them in the end.
Fandom: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Genre: Friendship and Family Fluff, Quiglet Fluff, Tearful Reunions, and Much Deserved Warm and Fuzzies
Relationships: Baudelaire Siblings & Quagmire Siblings Friendship, The Baudelaire Siblings & Beatrice II, Quigley Quagmire/Violet Baudelaire Pairing [Quiglet]
Characters: Violet Baudelaire (POV Character), Klaus Baudelaire, Sunny Baudelaire, Beatrice Baudelaire II, Quigley Quagmire, Isadora Quagmire, and Duncan Quagmire.
Rating: G
Warnings: Very brief and generally vague mentions of the unfortunate events that had befallen the Baudelaires and Quagmires in the past. A short sequence of worry when Violet briefly loses sight of Little Bea in the fog. But really this is pretty much all fluff and happy reunions.

A/N: Hi Juno! I absolutely loved both of your prompts for the Wicked Way Exchange so I combined them into one story. I completely understand what you meant about how'd you give almost anything for a solid Baudelaires and Quagmires reunion. I absolutely feel the same way, and I really hope you will like what I've come up with for that. (I also loved your Quiglet fluff prompt so I tried to incorporate some of that into this story as well). Here's to much deserved happiness for the children! Cheers!!
Beatrice Baudelaire II giggled and laughed as Sunny chased her around the shallow waters of Briny Beach—splashing her short, sandy legs and the already damp skirt of her dress. Watching them play brought a certain, almost bittersweet ache to Violet’s chest. Sunny had rarely been given the chance to play, the chance to have these happy childhood experiences that they were determined to give Little Bea. Since returning to the City, Violet and Klaus had worked hard to give Little Bea as happy a life as they could manage, and a smile tugged at Violet’s mouth seeing her now, smiling and laughing like a normal toddler who had never experienced the kinds of misery, despair, and misfortune that had followed the Baudelaire siblings since they had learned of that terrible fire on a day quite like this one—cloudy, foggy, and overcast, spent together on an otherwise empty beach.
Klaus soon intervened in Sunny and Bea’s splash fight—his already patched-up suit getting appropriately soaked in the process. The girls laughed as Klaus sighed and wiped the dripping water off of his glasses, but a slight smile twitched in the corners of his mouth as he splashed Sunny right back and lifted a giggly Bea up on his shoulders. Violet had missed her younger brother’s smile and was glad to see he was learning to be happy again, slowly but surely. They all were, and Violet knew they had Beatrice to thank for that. Without her, as Klaus had once said, they would likely have given in to despair long ago. She saved them, and for that they wanted to give their littlest sister the world and did everything in their power to make sure she never experienced the kinds of hardships and tragedies they had.
As Klaus carried Bea over to show her some of the tide pools he had loved to watch as a young boy, a sopping Sunny came running over to excitedly to unload the picnic basket she had packed for lunch.
“Are you ready to eat?” she asked with a wide smile, and Violet shrugged.
“Whenever you are.”
Sunny laughed. “Well, I’m always up for eating.”
Nodding, Violet chuckled lightly and turned to help Sunny unpack the contents of the picnic basket—a delicious meal she had spent the morning preparing.
“Violet! Violet!” called Bea running across the beach with a somewhat weary Klaus following after her barefooted, with the damp legs of his pants rolled up over his ankles. “Klaus says you can skip rocks. Can you show me how?” Her eyes widened as she practically begged her. “Can you, please?”
Klaus sighed apologetically as Violet turned to him then back to Bea with a smile. “Alright.”
Violet reached out to take her tiny hand as she began tugging her along the beach. She turned back to her brother. “Help Sunny set up the picnic, please.” Klaus nodded and began unpacking the picnic basket.
Violet stopped on the waters’ edge with Bea and told her to start looking for smooth stones they could use for skipping rocks. Bea nodded excitedly as she began her collection—though like any young child she tended to get a bit distracted by seashells and hermit crabs.
“Ah!” she cried, and Violet startled—whipping around to face her. She sighed in relief when she discovered that she was okay. “My hat!” Bea continued before taking off and running across the beach after her tumbling sunhat which was being blown about by the wind into a thick patch of fog.
“Beatrice! Beatrice, come back!” exclaimed Violet taking off after her.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she lost sight of Little Beatrice in all the mist, but she took a few deep breaths as she heard her giggling and a kind voice asking, “Little Miss, have you lost your hat?”
Through the thick cloud of mist, Violet could see the hazy figure of a young man bending down to return Beatrice’s hat to her as she said, “Thank you” with a bit of a curtsy.
“You’re welcome. Now you should hold on to that hat while it’s so windy out.” Something about his good-natured chuckle was so familiar somehow that Violet’s legs seemed to move on their own propelling through the mist at rapid speed. The man must have seen the outline of Violet as well because he added politely, “And go back to your mother since she’s probably worried about you.”
Violet made it through a clearing of fog just as Bea laughed and explained, “That’s not my mother. That’s my big sister Violet.”
The figures of Little Beatrice and the young man suddenly began to come into focus as they both turned to look at her. Bea was giggling clutching her hat in both hands as the man rose to his full height. He was tall with dark hair and kind eyes which widened as soon as he saw her. Violet froze in her tracks unable to believe her eyes.
“Violet…” he repeated in a soft, gentle voice as she met his gaze. “That’s a beautiful name.”
Still, Violet couldn’t bring herself to believe it. It couldn’t be…
She blinked at him and at Bea in disbelief as Bea tugged on the sleeve of his sweater. “My name is Beatrice, but you can call me Bea. What’s your name?”
The young man turned back to Bea with a kind smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Bea. My name is Quigley—”
“Quagmire,” Violet interrupted unable to stop herself now that she had irrefutable evidence.
Quigley’s smile widened and there was such kindness, such tenderness in his eyes as he replied, “Hello Violet.”
Her feet began to move on their own, and she ran a few feet forward throwing her arms around Quigley’s shoulders with misty-eyes. She squeezed him tightly—afraid that if she loosened her grip for just a moment he would disappear once again in the fog.
Quigley, however, didn’t seem to mind, and she could hear the light, breathy laugh reverberating in his chest as he said, “I was beginning to think you had forgotten me.”
“Never. I just…” She pulled back to look at him. He was older now as she was, but she would recognize his thoughtful smile and gentle eyes anywhere. She sniffled. “I just can’t believe it’s you.”
Quigley nodded in agreement as he gently pressed his palm to her cheek. “I know. I’m having trouble believing the same thing.”
“I never thought I’d see you again.” Violet’s voice hitched—choking on the emotion of those words.
Quigley nodded understandingly, but his mouth twitched in the corners. “I was worried too, but I always wanted to believe that we’d find each other again.” He gently pushed a long piece of dark hair out of her face. “I like to think that good things always have a way of finding their way back to you in the end.” He paused and chuckled rubbing his hand across the back of his neck. “Though I’ll admit, I never expected to meet again on Briny Beach of all places. We’re not even supposed to be here. Hector has a cold so we were just trying to get out of the house to give him some peace and quiet, and we were mostly just driving around until Isadora suggested we stop at the beach for a while.”
Violet’s eyes widened and she gasped. “Isadora? Hector? We?” she began tripping over her words in incoherent disbelief. “You mean…?”
A bright beaming smile spread across Quigley’s face followed by a somewhat apologetic, concerned look of realization. “Oh right, um…”
Before he could finish that thought, however, another figure appeared in the mist calling, “Quigley? Quigley, where did you go?”
“Duncan,” Quigley called back excitedly. “You’ll never believe—”
It seemed Quigley did not need to finish that thought, however, as Duncan appeared in the clearing and stopped in his tracks exclaiming, “Violet?” He immediately dropped the basket he was holding and ran down the beach and hugged her tightly, calling almost immediately for his sister. “Isadora! Isadora, come quickly!”
“What’s going on? Is everything okay?” called a faraway voice as the figure of a young woman began to stumble through the mist. As soon as she reached the clearing however she practically squealed with excitement and joy as she flung her arms around Violet and her brother joining their hug.
Realizing, somewhat guiltily, that Violet herself hadn’t called for her siblings yet in the all the excitement, she turned her head to yell for Klaus and Sunny but found she didn’t have to as she watched the tiny figure of Little Beatrice dragging Klaus by the arm through the fog with Sunny in concerned pursuit.
“Come on. Come on. Violet’s acting strange…” said Bea.
Klaus chuckled lightly as he reassured her, “Okay. Okay. I’m coming.”
Duncan and Isadora Quagmire both perked up at the sound of Klaus’s voice and took off after him, calling his name. They practically collided into him and pulled him into a tight hug the minute he appeared in the clearing.
“What…? How…?” he stumbled in disbelief as his eyes began to grow misty. Even Sunny who Violet worried might not remember the Quagmires shrieked excitedly and ran up to hug Quigley.
Soon the entire group, save a rather confused Bea, was hugging and crying and laughing. After the long, painful, and arduous series of unfortunate events that had marred their lives, the Baudealires and the Quagmires could not describe their joy at having been reunited once again with their dear friends.
“What’s going on?” asked a perplexed Bea, and Klaus scooped her up in his arms with a bright smile.
“These are our friends, the Quagmires, we told you about,” he explained.
Isadora laughed. “You told her about us?”
“I hope it’s mostly good things,” quipped Quigley, and Violet’s smile widened.
“Only good things.”
They all laughed.
“Are they going to come to our picnic?” asked Bea curiously, and the Quagmire triplets looked amongst themselves.
“Well…I did kind of drop our dinner in all the excitement,” said Duncan with a sheepish chuckle as he scratched the nape of his neck. He tilted his head towards the Quagmire’s picnic basket which had been spilled on the sand and forgotten in all the excitement.
Quigley gave his brother a pat on the back. “I don’t know,” he teased good-naturedly with an affectionate smile. “I tend to like a little bit of sand with my sandwich.”
Sunny chuckled, but reassured everyone, “Don’t worry. You can join us. We have plenty of food.”
And so, I am happy to say, the reunited friends settled in for a lovely picnic together on Briny Beach. Though it felt like it had been a lifetime since they had last seen each other, they picked up as if they had never left off—talking, laughing, and catching up for hours as they ate the delicious meal Sunny had prepared for them. They shared a little about what they had been doing since they had been parted and about some of their many failed attempts to find each other again, but many questions were left unanswered. There would be a time and a place for them on a much less joyous occasion, Violet thought, or perhaps they simply didn’t matter anymore.
As the sun began to set that evening, Duncan, Klaus and Isadora finished up the sandcastle they had been building with Sunny and Little Bea, and Quigley took a seat next to Violet on the picnic blanket.
“This is a very lovely view,” he said with a smile gazing out over the water and the bright orange sun disappearing on the misty horizon.
A knowing smile twitched in Violet’s mouth.
Many things had been taken from the Baudelaire siblings: their home, their parents, many of their previous guardians, their privacy, their sense of safety and security, and their friends. But now, sitting on Briny Beach and watching the sunset through the mist with her head resting on Quigley’s shoulder, Violet Baudelaire felt for the first time in a long time that maybe Quigley was right. Maybe no matter how much they had lost, good things could still find their way back to them in the end.
“Very lovely indeed,” she replied though she wasn’t looking at the sunset.

HI ISA I HOPE UR BIRTHDAY WAS COOL anyway answer THESE if u PLEASE 🐇❄️☁️
Thank you my love!!! It’s still going whooo! 🥳🎉🎊 and I am having a great time so far, just chilling at home and doing some cross stitch as a gift to myself 🥰
Writers truth & dare game
🐇 ⇢ do you prefer writing original characters, reader inserts, or a mix of both?
Out of the two I prefer original characters, but that’s because I’ve never written reader inserts before. I might challenge myself one day to give it a try, but I personally find it a little limiting because you have to keep things as vague as possible to fit as wide an audience as possible (nothing pulls me out of reading a reader insert fic than the writer describing “you” as having a feature or personality or relationship that I do not have 😂). But yeah, could be fun to try one day!
❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?
Oooh this is tricky! Hmm…probably a long sprawling fic about Glenn dndads and my OC Rita, learning to trust each other as they journey through the Forgotten Realms together. It’s my pet plot atm. Unfortunately the person who could write it best is me, but writing long fics is haaaard 😭
☁️ ⇢ what made you choose your username?
Ooh I think I answered a similar question to this once ages and ages ago, but I think it’s a bit of a fun story! So, when I was 13 my friends and I joined the Ye Olde website Quizilla, and I chose the username Isadora99, for Isadora Quagmire from A Series of Unfortunate Events because she was my fave character at the time (no idea where the 99 came from lol). Then I started writing a fanfiction where I had a half-elf Mary Sue self-insert called Isadora, and because she was half-elf I came up with the name Greenhall because it sounded kinda majestic and awesome 😁 that character became my default OC for all my fics through my teens while also becoming my internetsona! There’s something so special about the OCs you created when you were 13 🥲❤️

@ven10 Brought up that I one time in the Quagmire-Baudelaire switch let Isadora speak swedish, and I had her say something in swedish. I did not remember this and thus looked through my old fic from 2019.
Found it. I remember now. In asoue, there is references of "finnish female pirates", and so I was like "wouldn't it be so funny if one of them randomly said something in finnish". Now, I cannot speak finnish and basically only know random words and swears... and I do not remember if I asked one of my finnish discord friends to translate or if I just google translated. Because I remember I wanted to not make it too inaccurate. Anyway, what she says is "Fuck you! Throw yourself in the river", but it is possible it's grammatically incorrect. This was 5 years from now.
Tumblr media
But yes, there's also swedish in there, because 16yo me was like "why not throw in several nordic languages in there". In swedish, she says "I'm gonna kill you all before the night is over".

Quagmires triplets number 5, 6, and 13 please
5: My favourite ship of them
Isadora/Violet as that’s what I’ve read the most fics+seen the most artwork of regarding Isadora in a romantic relationship however I like the concept of Isadora/Fiona too but would need a lil more convincing.🖤💜✒️🔧
Duncan/Klaus: it’s wholesome+they are compatible. I like the thought of them nerding out together. Also researcher/journalist? Even their interests fit! Not to mention that they would both be impossibly awkward whilst trying to flirt before getting together. :)💚💙📝📰📘
Quigley/Violet: idk man it’s just a lovely ship. (Very lovely indeed.)🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢🫨🫨🫨😌😌😌💜💜
Fr tho I think it’s something to do with those 2 characters who have had to be fiercely independent for so long learning to rely on each other. I also feel like their romantic dynamic is the most chaotic+interesting out of all of them too, like it’d by no means be a smooth relationship but it’d be a worthy one. They’d be good for each other.
6: My least favourite ship of them
Isadora/Klaus: Nah, they’re Friends. +it’s a great friendship too, I’d say their friendship is worth more than their romance would be.
Duncan/Carmelita: No. She bullied him the ENTIRE time. They have 0 chemistry. They have very little in common, i.e, nothing to bond over. Unless you imagine them getting nostalgic over how Carmelita bullied him for being an orphan which just…no…that’s about the furthest from romance there is.
Quigley/Carmelita: I’d hope Quigley would have better taste. Although, it would be hilarious if after reuniting with his siblings then they’re about to tell him all about their awful time at Prufrock when Quigley is like “Wait! First let me introduce you to my girlfriend!” Then the gf is Carmelita 😬😬😬
13: Your favourite friendship they have
Isadora+Klaus: they bond over books of literary analysis+pull faces at each other in class :)
Duncan+Sunny who he was willing to protect via kicking a fake version of her round in a circle. His heart was there even if his brain wasn’t.
Quigley+Violet. It was a tough choice between Vi and Quigley’s notebook which kept him from being lonely on his travels 😀
Thanks for the ask, I’m always happy to talk about the Quagmire triplets!!! :D

Randomity: A Sapphire Fortune Worthy Question
“Hey, Quigley! We finally got the DVD player to work! You want to watch—you’re still working on your homework?” Duncan enters their bedroom, keeping a short but still reasonable distance.
Quigley, sitting at the study desk, has his hands together in its tent-like position. “I’m thinking.”
“Thinking about what?” Isadora skips into the room, and joins Duncan’s side. She then takes notice of the math book on the study desk. “Are you thinking what’s the greater than and less than symbols? Again, the less than symbol is the left hand, and greater than is the right hand.”
“I’m not thinking about linear inequalities, but thanks for the reminder.” Quigley sighs, and drops his hands. He then spins in his chair to face them. “I’m thinking about Hector. It’s been one year since we escaped that creature. A year of us living together. I thought a year could change things, but it didn’t. Or maybe things did change, but I’m blind. Because I swear, I get the feeling Hector doesn’t like me. Or he does, but doesn’t make the attempt to know me better.”
“…And where did you get that impression?” Duncan slowly turns his head towards Isadora, who is repeating the same action. Both of them stare at each other with a puzzle expression.
Quigley gives out a hum, and twirls a lock of his hair. “This morning. We were eating breakfast, talking about my Earth-Space project of the Solar System, and then a dead silence came over us. Neither of us talk again until you two came in, asking us about which toothpaste to use.”
Duncan and Isadora turn their direction back to Quigley. “That’s funny for you to think Hector doesn’t like you,” they say in unison, “because Hector thinks you don’t like him.”
Quigley quickly narrows his eyes, and stands up. “Where did he get that impression!? How could I not like the man! He willingly decided to stay and raise us after we escaped that creature! A man we barely knew continued to stuck by us! He thought we’re worth it all! Even everything that happened in in that vile village, after what he let happened to Jacques—”
“And there it is!” Duncan sighs as he lowers his head, and runs a hand through his hair. “We said it before, and we’ll say it again. Isadora and I do agree that what happened to Jacques Snicket was wrong. He got murdered for crimes that weren’t his own, and he never got to defend himself. And while we don’t like his methods, the man took care of you. He was in a way, your guardian. We understand why you’re still mourning him, even a year later.”
“And Hector freezing up was terrible,” continues Isadora, walking her way to Quigley himself. “Terrible, yet understandable. You don’t know how vile that village truly is, Quigley. You really don’t. They didn’t know us, yet still wanted our heads off and dead the second they saw us.”
“Please, understand that Hector’s freezing up didn’t kill Jacques Snicket,” says Duncan calmly.
“Anything Hector could have said or done wouldn’t change it.” Isadora then places a hand on Quigley’s shoulder. “The subconscious grudge you have on Hector, it’s time to let it go.”
---
Quigley continues to observe Hector drying and putting the dishes away. The man is whistling a tune he never heard of, but it’s remarkably catchy. Quigley keeps his hands in his pockets, and walks further into the kitchen. He stands beside Hector quietly, and then clear his throat.
“That’s a really catchy tune you’re whistling. Great whistling, in fact,” says Quigley, moving his hands out of his pockets, and start swinging them around. “What it is exactly?”
Hector stops drying the bowl he’s currently holding. “Thank you. I’m whistling La Llorona, the weeping woman. It’s one of my favorite songs. First heard it in my childhood.”
“Oh? That’s interesting.” Quigley tilts his head to the right. “What’s La Llorona about?”
Hector soon places the bowl into the cabinet shelf, and then leans back against the counter, folding the towel into a little square. “The legend is of a young woman who marries, and upon seeing her husband with his new lover, drowns her two children in a rage.”
“…I’m sorry, she did what?”
“Drowns her two children in a rage.” Hector says it all so casually. “Depending on what variation you heard, she had reasons to fear her husband will want to take her children when they separate, and drowns them so they won’t raise by the other woman. Either way, the woman eventually drowns herself in grief due to committing murder. Instead of passing on, she is force to roam the earth until she finds her children again.”
“That’s morbid as hell.” Quigley shakes his head, and shudders from the horror he just heard.
“If this helps you feel less disturb, the song has little in common with the legend,” says Hector. “The song is about a singer who is in my opinion, misses his love terribly so. The suffering and grief are akin of the weeping woman’s own pain by her terrible lover.”
“Ah.” Quigley slowly nods his head. “Less morbid. But still, who makes a kid listen to this?”
“My papa. Whenever I didn’t go to school and got the chance to hang out with him, he would sing La Llorona.” Hector places the towel down beside himself, and sighs. “It’s a very fond memory I have of him, in fact. I suppose you have a memory of someone you miss too.”
“Yeah,” answers Quigley, smiling and sticking his hands back into his pocket. “I do. Several people, in fact. I always think of those memories when I feel their absent is greater than usual.”
Quigley soon turns on his heels and begins walking away. He stops though, when he reaches the door. “You know, I know how to whistle, but not a tune. Well, not properly at least. But my mom —and Jacques— could. Would it be alright if you could teach me, in your spare time?”
“…Yes. I would. I should warn you, I’m not good whistling a tune too. I can only do so for a few songs.” Hector soon gives out a sudden chuckle. “Someone I knew took pity on me and gave me lessons, though I think he wanted an excuse to make a whistling band of sorts.”
“Snrk…ha-ha!” Quigley couldn’t help but chuckle also, before he continues on walking.
