Bettie Kline is an artist’s book conceived by Richard Prince and already published in a large-format hardcover edition by Gagosian Gallery in 2009. This pocket version is a gift from PURPLE magazine to our reader to celebrate Richard Prince’s work, which has been a long-standing inspiration for the magazine. Irving Klaw’s studio was on East 14th Street in New York City. 212 East 14th Street, to be exact. The same address where Franz Kline lived and worked. Klaw, along with his sister Paula, produced pin-up, nudie, and bondage photos. He worked with dozens of models; but his most famous, Bettie Page, paid the rent. The Klaws and Kline were friends, and Kline would sometimes use Irvings ‘models’ for figure studies. Head over heels can probably describe Kline’s feelings for Bettie Page. By 1952, she became his ‘only’: his subject, his sign, his muse. Working directly from life, Kline produced hundreds of pen and ink sketches of Bettie. The artist/model was secret. Although the pin-up girls of the 1950s and 1960s are a phenomenon many are aware of through pop culture, few pin-up stars gained as much fame as Bettie Page. Having graduated college with an arts degree, she traveled to New York City hoping to become an actress, but instead found bountiful work in the world of erotic photography, which at the time was restricted by the city's obscenity laws. She became famous as a bondage model working with Irving Klaw, who distributed the photos by mail. He also created a number of short films starring Page, 16mm shorts of her dancing, like a pin-up come to life. She found religion and retired in 1959, but her legacy lived on, gaining cult traction in the 1970s, and then bursting out of even cult fame in the 2000s. On this Blu-ray, "The Exotic Films of Bettie Page", Cult Epics founder Nico B is upgrading a VHS tape his label originally put out in 1991, having managed to obtain many of the original filmstrips from Klaw's wife Paula. Included here are 12 short films, plus 4 bonus shorts: "Return of the Teaser Girl", "Bettie's Clown Dance" Parts One and Two, "Flirtatious Dance By Bettie", "Peppy Graceful Dance", "Bettie Waltzing in Satin Scanties", "Tambourine Dance", "Joyful Dance By Bettie", "Bettie's Hat Dance", "Dream Dance By Bettie", "Betty's Lingerie Tease Dance" Part Two (no Part One), and four "Kamera Klub" shorts, "Bettie Page Nude", "Bettie Page in Black Lingerie", "...White Lingerie", and "...Red Lingerie."
