Ah home sweet home
Muggy air instead of a sea breeze worsening my asthma, and quietly crying in the back of the cab from the airport because I realise that those small towns in Ireland are the final places of my childhood where family still live or visit. That small town is that last True Home for me and I miss it already. Though we've all already been offered multiple places to stay if - No when - we visit again (my sister was also randomly offered a place to stay in Glasgow by a highly entoxicated (and absolutely beautiful) friend of the groom's who we have never met before 😂)

hiii, i just saw your tags on a post about catholicism and I know you watch 911, so i was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts on how you'd like to see 911 handle the whole Eddie is a lapsed catholic and has catholic guilt and is now dating a former almost-nun. do you think eddie's going to have a moment of "oh, actually i want to do mass and confessions again because thanks to my lovely girlfriend marisol, ive found my faith again"?
ANON I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED! I'm going to put some of my own experiences under the cut at the end of this ask because I think the context is at least a little important.
I think someone like @monsterrae1 will also have a ton of insight into this as another recovering Catholic and as someone from a Latin Catholic background that's probably similar to Eddie's.
Now to my take:
When they brought in Marisol's backstory of being a novice nun I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair and then I got really excited because bringing religion into Eddie's story is, in my opinion, the most obvious path for Eddie's queer awakening and an arc where Eddie unpacks a lot of his catholic guilt and repression.
If Eddie goes back to Church, which I think he might based on Bobby's advice not because of Marisol, I don't think it's going to be a 'oh wow I missed this!' moment, I think it would be the start of a journey where Eddie realizes how impacted he is by Catholic guilt and how even if he hasn't gone to church in years, it's impacted so many aspects of his life.
Eddie saying he's a manchurian catholic and has a reservoir of catholic guilt he didn't realize was there was so funny to me because that man doesn't even realize how his catholic guilt has impacted his life. Every time he ignores his own feelings for other people. every time he tries to do what he thinks people want of him instead of what he wants. every time he shoved down his feelings to 'do what's right' that's catholic guilt, baby.
My personal feelings on it are that Eddie is going to realize that he's been repressing a lot about himself... like maybe his sexuality. He's been comphet coded for years. From the panic attack of Ana being called his wife to saying dating feels like a performance to what he said last episode about the church being a big reason he and Shannon got married. (This isn't to say he didn't love Shannon because he did, we know how much he did even after their relationship was dead in the water).
I think we'll probably get an Eddie/Marisol breakup in the next few episodes - likely triggered by Eddie realizing he's maybe not straight and maybe he needs to figure himself out. Or maybe because he still can't get it up around her because of the nun reveal. Or maybe for some other reason - like maybe Marisol is a little homophobic.
They're setting up a perfect 'queer repressed Eddie' arc. They've set it up since before the move to ABC, even if they didn't do it on purpose.
I don't think it's going to be an easy journey for Eddie though. He's probably go so much internalized homophobia inside of him. He's got so much to unlearn and so much he needs to learn to love about himself. That's one of the reasons I hope Tommy sticks around - he's someone Eddie could lean on and learn from because he came out later in like - he came from a similar background with the military - he's someone Eddie could trust with that.
Now, a little backstory on my own relationship with Catholicism before I dive in - I was raised very Catholic, church every Sunday, Catholic school (uniform and all) from kindergarten all the way to high school, I was confirmed, I was my sister's confirmation sponsor, I was an alter server, I was a lead in my high school's church choir.
But my Catholic background is also not the exact same as Eddie's. He specified he comes from Latin Catholics and that's an important distinction because different cultures have a different approach to Catholicism. I'm originally from the states and while I'm not Irish-American or Italian-American but, I was raised in a very Irish and Italian neighbourhood (lots of first and second gen immigrant folks) and have probably a more 'Irish-American/Italian-American Catholic' perspective.
I am not practicing anymore and have gone to so much therapy for what my therapist calls 'religious trauma' because Catholicism, my teachers, and some of my priests, made me hate myself for existing even before I knew why I hated myself. Catholicism and the way they speak about queer people and the way they speak about sex is extremely regressive and when you learn about it from a very young age, you internalize that.
I also experience guilt when I do basically anything for myself that isn't beneficial to other people. You're made to feel selfish for having needs. I just... don't like organized religion because of my experience with the church.
I spent like 21 years hating myself and feeling tremendous guilt about my feelings towards women and every time I would kiss a girl I would play if off as 'oh haha it's just for laughs' because Catholic. One of my best friends in university once said to me, "I'm gay, but I'm catholic so I'm straight". He's now married to a woman and has a kid and every time I see him he looks worse and sadder. He struggles with addiction, likely because he's trying to numb himself. I think any religion that makes someone feel that way is toxic.

Goddess Danu 'Tuatha Dè Danann'
Danu, Great Mother Dana, Anu, Ana, Anann, Danand, Dôn (Wales), Danuvius (Roman), Duna (Hungarian), Donau (German)
Danu is an ancient Irish triple goddess who is considered the “Great Mother” of Ireland.
She is the Mother of the Irish gods and faery people, the Tuatha Dé Danann , which literally means the “People of the Goddess Danu”.
Danu means knowledge, wisdom, wealth and abundance. However her name is also connected to water, and could mean ‘the flowing one’.
Danu is thought to have married Bilé and was the mother of the Dagda, the chief leader of the Tuatha Dé Danann. In other myths, she is known as the daughter or lover of the Dagda.
Her other children included Nuada, Dian Cécht, Ogma, Airmid, Etan, Miach, Cian/Kian, Sawan and Goibhniu.
Because of the similarities in correspondences, Danu has been associated with other goddesses, including Anu, the Universal Mother, and the Morrigan, the goddess of war.
Danu is also very similar to the Welsh goddess Dôn, who is the mother figure of the medieval tales in the Mabinogion.
Danu was also sometimes associated with Brigid, the daughter of the Dagda.
It is thought through her association with water, the River Danube was named after her.
Also, there are two round-topped hills in County Kerry, Ireland, called Da Chich Anu/Anann (the Paps of Anu), thought to represent the two breasts of Danu/Anu.
Danu has a strong connection to the land and water. She is a goddess of fertility, bounty, plenty, prosperity, wind, rivers, water, wells, wisdom, and inspiration.
Some of Danu’s symbols include holy stones, horses, seagulls, fish, amber, gold, flowing water, air, wind, earth, moon, keys and crowns.
Danu reminds us that we are capable of realizing our own dreams, empowering us to create our own destiny.

Maiden Mother Crone
Edited for accuracy:
From information in the book by JAMES MACKILLOP - DICTIONARY OF CELTIC MYTHOLOGY
The Morrigan is associated with fate and fortune and a triplicate that represents change, from maiden to mother to crone. The Morrigan embodied many forms of change such as shapeshifting into creatures, not only different age variants of a human woman.
Pages 335-336:
She can be a "beautiful young woman," a "hag," and is a mother to "Mechi."
"She is part of a trio of war goddesses called the Morrigna, with Badb and Macha."
"Nemain may sometimes be part of the three."
She is "much associated with the crow," and can change into many things, including said crow: "The Morrigan appears on his shoulder as a hooded crow," the "he" here meaning CuChulainn.
As a war goddess she is known to be brutal and bloody, "passing out handfuls of...blood to gaping bystanders," in one famous fight.
My own additional note as the artist:
Change can be illustrated many ways, one of which as the moon changing from waxing to full to waning. This may be part of why the misunderstanding that the Morrigan is a moon-goddess arose, artistic depictions like mine trying to illustrate not a moon-goddess but a change-goddess. This is why the moon's changes are depicted alongside the changes in age of a woman, change in her clothing, triple-changing. An animal changing its coat etc. could illustrate largely the same thing in a different manner. She is NOT a moon goddess in Irish history.
Because the Morrigan is associated with wars and crows, she is often associated with the colors black and red in depictions, said depictions may not be historically accurate to how Irish peoples depicted her in their time.
Some, such as wiccans, pagans, etc., use many different names for the 3 aspects of this triplicate and may associate her with the moon incorrectly. 3 of those names are Danu, Macha, and Badb, and while all three of those names do appear in Irish mythology in different contexts, they are here skewed from historical truth. The source above does say that the Morrigan can be associated with Ana (also known as Anu or Danu), but does not say they are the same individual.
The maiden archetype in many cultures is associated with loveliness, the mother archetype with nurturing, and the crone archetype with wisdom. I wished to depict these three personality traits in my art piece.
Original Post unedited, as I wish to stay accountable and another has corrected me on my vague phrasing that implied things I did not mean:
The Morrigan is a goddess of Fate and Fortune and a triplicate that represents change, from maiden to mother to crone as from waxing to full to waning moon. There is debate about how associated with the moon's phases they are, but it is certain they embodied many forms of change such as shapeshifting into many creatures, not only different age variants of a human woman. Crows are sacred to Her and she is said to wear black or red. They have many names but to some The Lovely Maiden is Danu, the Nurturing Mother is Macha, and the Wise Crone is Badb.

I loooove Cassidy ethnic hcs !! Personally I hc him as Mexican and Navajo :) him learning Irish to spite Moira is so funny tho it's the first time anyone sees Moira genuinely shocked
(Oooo!! I love your Cassidy ethnic headcannon!!!)
One of my biggest headcannons with Cassidy is that even though he isn't very educationally smart he's still really good with literature, specifically different languages and reading.
But part of that headcannon is that Cassidy has learned several languages out of spite.
The biggest three are Japanese, Irish and Italian. Japanese and Irish because Genji and Moira kept talking shit. Italian because of what happened in Retribution.
When he spoke Japanese for the first time Genji actually jumped and actively avoided Cassidy for a week. Moira actively shut down, like she couldn't comprehend that Cassidy learnt a language in a matter of a few days. It was the only time anyone in Overwatch or Talon saw this women stunned and speechless.
The only three languages he has learnt for reasons other than spite are English, Spanish and Arabic. English and Spanish were two languages he's know his entire life. Arabic was so Pharah and Ana didn't have to only speak to him in English.
I also think he picked up bits and pieces of other languages cause he's been around these people for around 17-20 years and his brain is a sponge.
The only down side is that with him being fluent in 6 languages he does that thing where you forget a word in one language and not the other ones. With his luck he's usually not around a person who speaks the language he remembers the word in.
Cassidy: Shit I forgot this word in English.
Pharah: Do you remember it in Arabic?
Cassidy: No I only remember what it is in Italian...
Pharah: ...
Pharah: When the fuck did you learn Italian?!

Upgraded: A Review
Tumblr media
It has been almost 20 years since the debut of The Devil Wears Prada, and for that reason, the timing of Upgraded’s release is interesting. This movie definitely exists in the same vein as its counterpart, and I think it’s clever that this film capitalized on the similarities it shares with TDWP to reinvigorate interest in the genre. Camila Mendes is at times, a fun actress, and was the main selling point that ultimately convinced me to watch this movie, but…
Pros:
* Camila Mendes’ performance provides the main character with a well-developed personality. Instead of the usual wide-eyed innocent or fish-out-of-water archetype, the protagonist has a biting sense of humor, she’s down-on-her-luck, irresponsible, sassy, and even a bit vengeful
* It’s refreshing to finally see art history majors, and Irish folk, represented in film
* Ana and William (the film’s love interests) share decent chemistry
* The costume design is more grounded in reality than other films like it and most of the outfits are sophisticated while still looking achievable
* Marisa Tomei in anything is always a plus
* The film’s setting is extravagant and the cinematography in this movie perfectly captures what makes England such a tourist spot
Cons:
* Ana (the main character) is presented with very few obstacles that would make it difficult to achieve success in her career. She coincidentally makes connections with people who immediately elevate her position in life and there are few instances in which the protagonist earns what she has accomplished in the working world. Ana is also set up as a career-oriented woman, but once she meets Will, (the love interest), she becomes far too easily distracted by him and her character arc gives way to an underdeveloped romance
* Ana is characterized as a liar. Despite the level of dishonesty she demonstrates to her coworkers, each of them forgive her far too easily and she suffers no consequences for her actions
* Marisa Tomei is a great actress, but as a result of bad direction, her performance is not very strong. Her character, Claire DuPont, is described as terrifying and demanding to work for, but her actions and behaviors hardly support this characterization. Claire is the movie’s central antagonist and is supposed to serve as Upgraded’s version of Miranda Priestly. Unfortunately, Tomei’s portrayal of Claire DuPont is so much more “cushy” than Miranda Priestly that she does not give the movie a sense of conflict it so badly needs. Tomei is also forced to talk with a cartoonish French accent, which… ugh
* Two rival coworkers are introduced in this movie, but if they were removed from the script, nothing would change, and neither of them pose a real threat to the main character
Verdict: Upgraded is a film that tries and fails to create an upbeat narrative about achieving one’s dreams and finding success in a cutthroat industry. This movie had so much potential to become The Devil Wears Prada for a new generation, but there are many reasons Upgraded does not work on a fundamental level. I can appreciate its attempts to pay homage to a good chick flick, but despite the film’s great setup, its execution and payoff are disappointing. I can only lie in anxious wait for the next big-budget attempt to recapture the magic of one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s.

Random fun tidbits!
A black coffee hater
Thinks Michigan is just fine, much to the dismay of Quinn, Jack and Luke
Underrated and subtle friendship alert: Brock Boeser. They got along immediately when Quinn introduced the two when Clementine still lived in California and the Canucks played in San Jose
Gets jokingly hit on by Matthew Tkachuk every single time they see each other
Learned how to knit from her mother because she was getting cold watching the boys play in rinks growing up
Known to be The Sister Figure to all
Insanely booksmart but plays it off
Can’t skate for her life
Always receives jewelry from Ellen on her birthday
Favorite movie of all time is The Edge of Seventeen
Speaks conversational Spanish; used to be fluent when she was younger
Trevor described her once as “a girl who could kick your ass to China and back but would immediately fly 1,000 miles to you if something was wrong” and that sums it up pretty well.
Despite her love for mentoring, her brothers and kids, she’s always been hesitant about having her own kids.
Favorite musical artists: Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepson, SZA, Kacey Musgraves, Sabrina Carpenter, NIKI. A pop girly for sure, but listens to a bit of everything.
