Other people have probably said this sooner and better, but I’m actually not done thinking about Everything Everywhere All At Once because the googly eyes represent on such a physical level the movie’s theme of radical empathy; not just in serving as the visual inverse of the Nihilism Bagel, but in that their presence literally inverts the concept of nihilism.

Does anyone else remember that Lindsey Ellis video essay from years ago where she talked about how aliens in sci fi movies are designed, and that by and large if the audience is supposed to empathise with them as characters then they’ll have big eyes with visible irises and pupils? And if they’re supposed to be unknowable and dangerous then they may not have visible eyes at all? Think E.T versus the Xenomorph or the heptapods from Arrival. Artists will do that because the eyes are the most direct way humans have of looking at a thing and understanding what it is. The more visible and mammal-like the eyes, the more familiarity we have with it, therefore the greater our empathy for it. Think of the amount of love your average person on the street will have for a random dog versus a random fly or snake or bird. Not to say that we can’t have empathy for the latter, but eyes make it easier.

In the movie, the first thing we see of the googly eyes is stuck on one of the bags of clothes Waymond stored upstairs – just in passing, he says something like “I think they’re happier up there!” while Evelyn’s shouting at him. She rips the eyes off and tells him to stop, keeps rushing around and ignoring Joy (ignoring joy, lmao). But they keep trickling back into the movie at every turn, stuck to washing machines and baseball bats, filling the world with friendly faces. Waymond, in a world that treats people like objects, treats objects like people, and he manifests it by giving them eyes. At one point he’s stuck them on a lampshade or something, shares a glance with it when he notices Evelyn’s noticed him and runs off like they’re conspiring together. When Evelyn finally comes around to his point of view, she sticks them on herself as a rock – this outermost physical form where she and Joy have un-personed themselves to the greatest extent they can manage, just rocks in an empty universe of rocks – and uses them to drag them both back into personhood.

And it works so well as a metaphor because the fundamental antagonistic force in the story is the refusal to empathise – Evelyn’s dismissal of Joy’s life choices and the partner she’s chosen, Alpha Evelyn’s literal use of Joy as an experiment, Gong Gong’s unwillingness to be proud of his daughter, Evelyn’s own refusal to be proud of herself. In the tax audit Deirdre is listing all of Evelyn’s business expense claims with reference to what they would make her as a person – ‘You’re telling me you’re a singer, a chef, a teacher, a novelist, well that can’t be right because you’re just a laundromat owner.’ The system she represents only has space for Evelyn to be one thing, denies her her complexity and humanity, so Deirdre acting as the arm of that system inevitably has to do the same (this is how her universe has to work, because it’s the one where she has a modicum of power and doesn’t have to think about driving her car through her ex’s kitchen).

And so it creates a feedback loop – Deirdre can’t acknowledge Evelyn’s humanity so Evelyn can’t acknowledge Deirdre’s. She can barely manage to love this person when her life literally depends on it. It’s only through Waymond’s approach of convincing Deirdre to confront the fact that he and Evelyn are people, the fact of what it really means for her to be coming after their livelihood like this, that a new feedback loop can be created. Deirdre can now acknowledge Evelyn’s humanity and give her a fucking break. Evelyn can acknowledge Deirdre’s and glimpse universes where they choose each other, spend their lives together.

(The cookies Waymond gives to Deirdre that initially persuade her to allow them a second chance have smiley faces on them).

The movie’s ultimate message is pretty clear – fuck nihilism, maybe nothing matters but also everything matters because I’m here and you’re here and I love you. But it doesn’t stop there. Fuck nihilism, maybe nothing matters but also everything matters because I’m here and this lampshade is here and I love it. I love this washing machine, this baseball bat, this bag of laundry. If I was a rock I would love all the other rocks with everything in my little rock soul. It’s can’t end at loving ourselves and loving each other, we’ve got to love the universe. On like, a molecular level.

DIY Sashiko Sampler Potholders

Project by Natalie Stopka:

These sweet potholders are a great way to experiment with simple stitches and dashing color combinations. Sashiko is a decorative running stitch used in Japan to reinforce fabrics while forming tessellating geometric patterns. Following that tradition we will use the oldest stitch in the book to quilt a vibrant and utilitarian collection of potholders – and the perfect hostess gifts!

A note about materials: It is imperative that only natural fibers are used for this project – synthetics will burn. That means cotton or linen fabric, cotton batting, cotton embroidery thread, and even cotton machine quilting thread to bind the edges. Traditional sashiko needles are very long (2 1/2”) with a sharp point and small eye. You can purchase genuine needles or simply substitute the longest sewing needle you’ve got. –Natalie

Materials

-low loft cotton batting -linen or cotton fabric -safety pins -sashiko thread, or embroidery floss sashiko needle, or long needle -vanishing fabric marker or chalk pencil -scissors -ruler -straight pins -cotton sewing thread -iron and board -optional: tear-away stabilizer, permanent marker, thimble, sewing machine

Steps:

Begin by finding your lovely patterns! Check out Pinterest for inspiration. Simple geometric designs can be drawn directly on the fabric with a vanishing fabric marker, or complex patterns can be traced onto tear-away stabilizer with a permanent marker. This paper- like sheet is pinned to the surface of the fabric, sewn through, and torn off when the embroidery is complete.

Pre-wash your fabric. Cut two pieces of fabric and one piece of batting to about 8” square. Lay the batting between the fabric and pin the layers in place with a few safety pins. Draw out your pattern or affix the stabilizer.

To begin the embroidery, hide your knot between the fabric and batting. Following the pattern, sew a running stitch with large and (more or less) even stitches through all three layers of fabric and batting. Put several stitches onto the long needle before pushing it through the fabric, using a thimble if necessary. Divide each line segment of the pattern into an even number of stitches to keep your spacing uniform across the pattern, and keep the tension a little loose to prevent puckering in the wash.

When the sashiko embroidery is complete, bind the edges of the potholder. Cut a few long strips of fabric about 1 3/4” wide (these do not need to be on the bias). Join two strips together if necessary to reach around the edge of the potholder. Pin the binding strip along the edge of the potholder on whichever side you deem the back, 1/8” from the edge. The raw edges will be parallel, with the binding strip laying over the embroidered pattern. Leave two tails where the ends of the binding strip will be joined.

Sew the binding strip around the edge of the potholder 1/4” from the edge, using a sewing machine if you like. At each corner there will be a triangular flap of fabric – simply sew to the corner, lift the presser foot and flip the triangle from the next edge to the sewn edge, lower the presser foot and continue. When you reach the side where the binding strip will be joined, pin the seam and join the ends before attaching the binding strip to the potholder.

To add the fabric loop: Cut a piece of fabric 1” wide by 3” long. Fold the long sides to the center and press, then fold in half lengthwise and press again (just like bias tape). Sew down the length of this and make it into a loop. Snip a few stitches at the center of one side of the potholder and slip the ends of the loop between the binding strip and the potholder, with the loop pointing towards the center of the potholder. Re-sew the seam, securing the loop in place.

Trim the edge of the potholder (and loop ends) flush with the edge of the binding strip, 1/8” from the seam. Invert the binding strip so it wraps around the edge of the potholder to the front. Press the back with a warm iron, then turn front-side up. Fold the outer edge of the binding strip to meet the edge of the potholder and press. Fold this crisp new seam onto the front of the potholder covering the edge. Press again, working your way around the sides. When you reach each corner you will create a little triangle; fold the next side over this to make the mitered corner. Sew the binding strip into place, securing the edges of the potholder.

“It’s kinda cold in here, I wonder if mom will let me turn the A/C up?” Wjian said to herself, clutching her sweatshirt closer to her small figure.

“WJIAN!” Her mother called in her valley girl accent.

“Yes?” Wjian said, poking her head out her door.

“You’re dad finally came back with the milk so we’re going out to dinner since it’s date night. Be careful and don’t forget to lock up before you go to bed okay? Okay, love you, bye bye girlie!”

Welp I’m home alone Wjian, thought to herself. She leaned back into the chair, contemplating on what she would do next.

Sitting back up she looked down into her lap to see her hair untangled from her headphones. She didn’t think much of it and grabbed her phone at the sound of the personalized text tone of her best friend, Dio Brando. Who had sent her a tiktok. She opened up the app and watched a video about a man who had railed his poor girlfriend to a truly god awful song to have sex to.

Getting (Slightly) Better Lineart from CSP’s 3D models--without CSP EX (Full tutorial below the cut because it’s a looong post.)

If you’re like me, you hate drawing the repetitive, straight lines of background scenes and have wanted to take advantage of CSP’s huge 3d asset library to get some decently detailed backgrounds--only problem is even if you have CSP EX’s lineart extraction, the result is really....gross. I have CSP EX at the moment, so I’ll demonstrate below.

This is the extracted lineart with 5px max width of line, no line texturing, no toning, 80-level line detection accuracy, and 1-level corrections. Taking a closer look, we can see the results look okay-ish from afar, but up close...

The software struggles to convert repeating shapes, like the wire basket, into nice, clean vector lines. And lighter lines struggle to produce anything but strange speckles. Ugh, ok, but how do we fix this? Well, here’s an alterative method.

First, you have to understand that this alternative method won’t give you vector lines. At the end of the day it’s just hard to convert an image--even with clean 3d lines--into nice vector lines. But we can still get nice, reletively clean pixel or raster lineart that can save you some time.

For this method, you will need some kind of photo editing software with the following features: - Contrast/Brightness - Edge Detect (this one is really important!) - Color Invert

I strongly dislike paying continuously for Adobe, so I prefer to use Affinity Photo, but honestly, most photo editors should have these fairly basic features. However--as far as I know, Photoshop and Affinity Photo are the only photo editors that have edge detect, so check you have a software that has that function.

To start, lay out your CSP scene, and be cautious about adjusting the lighting angle so that you have decent contrast with all visible edges to the CSP 3d model.

Sadly, you are not going to get every little detail in perfect relief. Some details are going to get lost because they can’t all be in contrast at the same time. Just do your best to make sure that major details, like in this case, the bench, washer doors, and vents on the roof, all have enough tonal difference to mark them apart.

Export the canvas as a .jpg, laid out exactly the way you want the scene to be, and drop it down into your photo editing software of choice. For me, this means Affinity Photo, and you can see our first edit: adjusting the contrast using Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Contrast/Brightness. Good contrast gives the photo editing software the best chance of detecting the edges, so I like to crank it up about 50%.

Now, what I’ve done here is used Affinity’s Filters>Detect>Detect Edges. There is no pop-up panel to refine this, so we’ll work on refining it later. Now, I’ll apply a quick Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Invert to the the result below, to get a black and white image.

So far, we can see that the edge detect in a photo editor tends to do much, much better than CSP EX line extract with things like subtle lines and curved shapes, like the washing machine doors. Just compare the difference with another closeup:

Now we’re going to deal with all those funky little gaps between the lines where the program drew two thin lines close together, instead of one thick line. But dealing with this is actually a bit easier in CSP, so let’s hop back over there. Export the black and white image as a .jpg, and put it into CSP. (Everything we’re doing there is totally available to Pro users, so don’t worry about having EX for this part by the way.)

Once you have your photo in CSP, go to Layer>Rasterize. Importing the photo will put it in an image layer format by default, so to make edits we’ll need it as a pixel or raster later first. Once you have a raster layer, we want to isolate the actual lineart without the white background, so go to Edit>Convert Brightness To Opacity. Now we’re really ready to polish this stuff.

First, apply a very low Gaussian blur. Keep in mind, this should be a very, very minimal effect--we want to apply it just enough to make the pixelated edges a little softer. I prefer about a level 4 Gaussian Blur. You should get something like this.

Now, depending on your preference for how it looks, use either Filter>Sharpen or Filter>Sharpen more. I like sharpen more, since it gets me closer to the level of anti-aliasing that I like without having to use sharpen multiple times, but do what you want. My final version looks like this:

Of course, if you want slightly darker lineart in some areas, like the poster board on the left wall, simply duplicate the lineart layer and erase already dark areas you don’t want darkened, and merge them together to get something like this:

Of course, with complex interiors like this laundromat, there will be limits to what you can extract. Some corrections will have to be made by hand. Overall, you’ll probably get more success with this method using something simpler, like this piano:
