Robe
Tumblr media
The number of times that you recalled a certain half demon placing his robe over you in protections were too numerous to count. It was only when you were in dire danger or need that the precious red fabric ever left his being. It was his armor, as you’ve come to recognize from every battle you’d witnessed, proving its worth time and time again as he fought countless foes. There were a few times when its protection could only do so much for him but he always treated it with care even when it had been rendered to tatters until it could return to its former completed shape.
Your gaze rose upwards to the darkened night sky. Another new moon had come, earning the little traveling group a much needed break for camp, along with a change over a certain person who now grumbled lowly under their breath as a town appeared in the distance. The change InuYasha befell never ceases to amaze you as he huffed when the little fox demon lightly poked fun. Long pristine platinum white hair was now a black that could rival tonight’s darkness, touchable ears that would swivel or perk had disappeared, and the sharpness of his nails that was rivaled by his eyes were now softer yet still profound that told of inhuman heritage.
“What are you looking at?”
A snap of your head back towards the road shifted your gaze forward. “Wonder if there’s an place that we can stay at.”
“Tsk. Nothing wrong with camping.”
The monk intervened before you could respond, stating that for everyone’s sake it would be best to take shelter, then departed once spotting several prosperous homes. None too surprising that Sango followed him closely with Shippo and Kilala up her shoulders. That meant it was just the two of you walking along the dirt trodden path.
As if pulled by a magnet your gaze drifted back towards the seemingly normal man beside you.
“If you’ve got something to say, than say it already.” His snap was halfhearted, earning a raise of your eyebrow. When you didn’t answer he quickened his pace until blocking your path which caused you to stop. It was rare to see this expression upon his face as the nearby lantern illuminated his features for you. It was concerned, worried maybe, but most of all it was sincere. “What is it? You’ve been awfully quiet since dusk.” This was another aspect that you favored about this time of the month. Honesty was a strong suit of his, ego and bravado being used as shields when someone managed to get beneath his skin, but it was during this change that he was more open with you in particular when in regards to certain topics. Patience wasn’t his forte yet he waited for longer than you expected for an answer of some sort until he cast a brief glance over your shoulder before encouraging you to stand closer to the source of light. “You know I’d do my best to protect you, right? Don’t be scared.”
Warmth entered your cheeks at the tone he used. “Oh, I know you will, that’s not why—” Your words were forgotten as one of his hands appeared from the robe’s sleeves to press its palm against your forehead. “What are you doing?”
“Checking to see if you’re falling ill.” The hum that sounded from his throat reverberated slightly in your ears from its pitch, his expression becoming one of concentration. “You don’t have a fever so that’s good.”
“Really, I’m fine.”
At that moment a breeze blew past, tickling the bare skin of your legs and arms until the hairs stood upright with its cooler temperature, earning a shiver across your body. Your head hung as he sighed. All day you’ve been suppressing similar shivers down your spine with each breath of wind that whispered of fall’s coming frost. Guess you should’ve listened to mom’s advice about packing weather appropriate clothing. The school’s summertime uniform wasn’t going to cut it for much longer. Why couldn’t you have packed a jacket or some leggings instead of all those textbooks that threatened to break your back?
Silence filled the air between the two of you until the sound of shifting fabric caused your gaze to rise in curiosity only for it to become ensnared by a pair of warm sienna brown eyes that subtly shone with amber shards. His fingers were careful as they slipped the heavy backpack off your shoulders, easily swinging it up onto his own, then shifted so that you were nearly sandwiched between his body and the lantern. Not only was he blocking the wind but also attempting to combine his body heat with that of the lantern to help keep you warm until the others returned. And still his gaze remained locked on your own even when the subtlest of pink hues appeared within the tips of his ears. “It’s not much but better?”
A small smile lifted your lips as the chill in your skin slowly dissipated. “Much, thanks.”
It didn’t take long for Shippo to return with word that Miroku had found a place to stay for the night. After a modest dinner and sleeping arrangements had been made, you slipped off towards a quieter part of the residence where a little studying could be done. The head of the house had been kind enough to provide a few candles to offer better light for you but they did little to stem off the night’s chill as your nearly numb fingers fumbled to turn a page. Just as you were about to call it a night because it was becoming too difficult to focus from the cold, something happened that you never would have guessed or saw coming.
From behind you appeared two folds of familiar fabric that loosely enclosed you within a cocoon, a pair of legs folding neatly beneath you in place of the floor that were far more cushioned, and a firm toned surface meeting your back that had begun to protest against the slouched position you’d been in for the last hour. “Getting some studying done?” He asked softly, as if hoping not to startle you too much. A barely audible hiss slipped from between his lips as he drew you closer with a squeeze. “Damn, (Y/n), you’re freezing. How can you possibly get anything done when you’re this cold?”
Your answer was lost to the stuttering of syllables as your teeth chattered slightly, earning a chuckle from the dark haired man.
“Next time you’re this cold, just say something, ‘kay?” It was only when you nodded in agreement did his posture become more relaxed, hold loosening just enough that you could pick up the textbook again.
Now you had a completely different reason to be distracted.
Had he always been this warm or was that the robe? Either way it was so blissful that your mind slowly became a muddled mess the longer you remained within his hold. The sharp scents of Wind Scars or Backlash Waves that mostly dominated his being had given way to reveal faint traces of salty sweat reminding you of the beach, dry chalky remnants that were similar to mountains, and spicy cinnamon that tickled your nose in an alluring way.
“So what are you studyin’ this time? Is it that weird trig-no-metry thing?”
A chuckle came from your throat, shifting so that he could see the illustration of a bamboo forest. “It’s the story of a prince who wants to marry the bamboo princess but she has all these tasks for him to do before she agrees.” The tip of your finger rose when his expression became weary. “It’s similar to the Kaguya legend but this one describes the Robe of the Fire Rat to be silvery and beautiful.”
His eyebrows shot upwards as his chin fell to rest upon your shoulder, causing your cheeks to brush. “Yeah?”
“Mmhm. According to this, it was mistaken for common silk at first when an iron box had been dug up beneath a fallen temple. Only the prince of Japan at the time who had sent word to his dear friend in China asking for assistance understand what it truly once when he received it. So beautiful it was the he couldn’t wait to gift it to the princess but didn’t feel as though it would do her justice.” Your hand turned the page to reveal an illustration, eyes finding the sentence where you left off and continued to read aloud. “‘Across a bed of coals did the prince lay the robe, for it had been heard that the robe would become more beautiful to behold once kissed by flame’s lingering breath’. It said in a passage that it was as if silver had been spun finely to create the robe that could protect its wearer from any heat related harm.” From the corner of your eye you could see InuYasha’s gaze shift from the open book to his trusty coat, coaxing his eyes to return to the page courtesy of your nudge. “However, the prince made a mistake. He placed it on the coals twice more and it evaporated into silver smoke.”
The snort that sounded nearly made you smile. “Idiot. Should’ve just left it alone.”
“Well, he was trying to make sure it was in its peak condition before giving it to the bamboo princess. Nothing wrong with trying to ensure a gift is in its best condition.” You chided, noting how he rolled his eyes. “Yours was a gift from your father, right? Would you have been happy if he’d given it to you full of holes?” No sooner had the words come out of your mouth did you wish to take them back as his gaze darkened. Guilt filled your veins as his lip curled. “InuYasha, I’m sorry—”
“It was actually a gift to my mother who then passed it down to me when she died.” His tone was much softer than the expression made of stone he wore. “My old man knew he wouldn’t be enough to protect her so he’d asked the Fire Rat to make something for her. A lot of good it did her though.”
From within your heart came a twinge of sadness for him as he took a deep inhale through his nose. The book was closed with a snap, somehow not earning a reaction from him, then it was placed off to the side as you pivoted so that the two of you were facing each other. Only when the palms of your hands cupped his face did the dark haired InuYasha surface from the thoughts plaguing his mind. His gaze found your own, finding warmth and honesty, before you snuggled into his being while wrapping your arms around his torso. “I’m glad your father had it made to protect her, you could almost say it was made from his love for Lady Izayoi, and it became full of her love for you after your birth.” From this angle you couldn’t see his face there was no mistaking the rhythm of his heart quickening when you gave him a squeeze. “You could even say that its their love combined that continues to protect you even during this time when you feel weakest.”
The stiffness within his toned muscular frame ebbed at your words. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that he’d been constantly on guard all day knowing what was to come once the sun had set. Sure there was Sango, Miroku, and even Kilala to help if a battle or opponent were to present themselves. Ever so slowly, his arms enclosed around you in a returning embrace until the entirety of your form was nearly pressed against his own. Tresses of his long hair intermixed with your own as his warm breath wafted the sensitive skin of your neck.
Not another word was spoken between the two of you as one by one the candles flickered than hissed before extinguishing until darkness settled over the two of you like a heavy curtain. Neither it nor the whispering chill on the breeze could force you two apart as warmth slowly grew between your forms. The robe was large enough to comfortably fit around your combined forms, although that might have been because you were practically cradled against his form with your face protectively tucked beneath his chin, the gentle rises and falls of your chests in harmony as sleep slowly claimed you both.
It was almost too soon that you woke to find the first few rays of sunshine filtering over the horizon. Unlike the first time you’d witnessed his transformation, you watched with awe as black gave way to silvery platinum and the sharpness returned to his features as he stirred. The lids of his eyes opened just in time for the sienna brown to be overtaken by brilliant gold and pupils to become oval shaped rather than circular, those shards of amber remaining but now becoming harder to see from the irises’ ring. And yet he didn’t move or say anything that suggested you should move away. So within his hold you remained, offering a smile of greeting when his pointed dog-like ears perked in your direction.
“Morning, InuYasha.”
His gaze flitted off to the distance, a huff sounding in his nose. “Yeah…morning.”
“Did you sleep good?”
“Tsk. Would you sleep well if something heavier than a pickling pot sat in your lap?”
A twitch settled within your brow. Standing, you gathered all of the books you’d meant to study last night and shoved the materials back into your bag as the chorus of your names came from within the residence. “Sounds like the others are up so we should get going.”
“Not like we got anything here to keep us. Better to move on.”
The muscles within your jaw clenched as he nonchalantly rose then disappeared around the main house’s corner in the direction of where your companions would likely be as you hurried to follow. It was then that you noticed not only was your bag suddenly missing but the Robe of the Fire Rat was secured around your frame in a similar fashion that it had been at the Sage Tokijin’s temple. When had he done that?
“Hurry up, (Y/n), we ain’t got all day!”
Though it was so fast the others had missed, or if they had seen they didn’t comment, the pink tinge that entered his cheeks when you’d appeared alongside them.
“Why are you wearing InuYasha’s robe?” Shippo asked curiously while hoping up to balance atop of your head. “Did something happen last night that made you not come to bed?”
A teasing smile raised your lips while catching the half-demon’s gaze before taking the lead from him from beyond the gate that was entrance to the residence. “Looks better on me, wouldn’t you agree, Miroku?”
Instantly, InuYasha’s expression became one of anger as the perverted monk made to comment. “Don’t you even start!”

One of the reasons I hate the Inuyasha love triangle discourse is bc frankly it bores me to tears.
It rubs me the wrong way when I see ppl go on and on about who loved Inuyasha better, who was more deserving of said love, who failed, and who gives Inuyasha more blah blah. I'm just saying that there is plenty to talk about outside of a romantic context. Especially (imo) when it comes to Kagome.
ahem
Reason #903048301 as to why I love the character Kagome is because she's like this timeless icon of the 90s teen girl archetype. It's wild how you can write fanfiction about her and get this glimpse into what it meant to be a teen girl back in the day. But, that definition varies for everyone, and that's what makes it magical.
When you see someone writing Kagome, it's like a window into their own experiences. Everyone's take on Kagome is a bit different but there's this..all encompassing Kagome-ness that we try to tap into (her kidness? her empathy? her sense of duty? it's different for everyone!). She's this character who somehow manages to resonate even today. Or maybe she doesn't, and that's part of the charm – she's this evolving, undefined concept. If you picture Kagome in high school today, it would def be a different Kagome. And that is so much fun to explore!!!!!!!!!!!
And then there's the fact that Kagome represents us, the audience, in Inuyasha's world. Through her, we get to explore this fantastical and dangerous realm. She grows, and we grow with her. By the end, she's not the same teen girl, but a mature woman. It's like, who is this post-canon Kagome? We all get to project our ideas of womanhood onto her as she takes on the role of the legendary miko of the village. She changes, and we see ourselves in that transformation.
I'm on this journey, trying to figure out how she still fits in today's world and how others put their own spin on it. It's fascinating how characters from that era can still resonate today, even as the definition of a teenage girl's experiences and identity has evolved over the years. These characters can serve as a lens to understand the changing perspectives and experiences of teenage girls through different generations. (SHE LITERALLY VISITS HER (more repressed) SELF IN THE PAST AND AHUghhhhhh!!!!!!!! AND! IS FIGURING OUT HER IDENTITY AND HOW SHE FITS INTO THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS!!!! Her relationshi with Kikyo in that context is something I wanna talk about more)
Writing fanfiction allows you to delve into this archetype, providing insights into the character and the era while also allowing you to put your own spin on it. It's a great to see how different writers interpret and reinterpret this character in contemporary contexts. I can't get enough of Kagome.

My fair lady ❤️ Did another SessRin drawing. It’s rare for me to come up with SessRin ideas so frequently  since I’m focused on my fan fiction stuff mainly but I’m happy I can make room to come up with more SessRin ideas this much too.🥰

hi i posted a new fic. you can read that ish here.
Our Swan Song | Chapter One: This Isn’t My Idea
When the king and queen split off towards the king’s study, Inuyasha immediately dropped his arm to fold both of them over his chest. Kagome easily returned the favour, letting her arm down before holding the front of her dress with the same hand.
“You don’t need to come with me, I know where I’m going,” kagome stated after a moment or two, confident that they were out of earshot.
A small scoff left the prince then, “I’m already gettin’ an earful for not bein’ here to greet you. I’m not riskin’ anymore than that,” he explained, hearing Kagome murmur under her breath.
“How gentlemanly of you.”
Both of them fell into silence then, simply walking side by side until Kagome couldn’t contain herself any longer, “Your father wants to officially announce our merger tonight.”
The prince said nothing, simply keeping up his pace as Kagome did the same, her gaze looking to him as they did, “Did you hear me?” She asked, already knowing the answer was ‘yes’. How many times had he managed to hear her snide comments under her breath due to his enhanced hearing?
“Why do you think I went hunting this morning?” He suddenly said, his gaze glancing towards Kagome’s for a moment before he looked ahead immediately after.
“So he told you,” Kagome replied, seeing the prince give a small nod. Kagome looked ahead as well, finding herfself slightly disappointed by the fact that Inuyasha had seemed that upset by the news.
Was it truly that awful to him? To know that he would be marrying her?
Yes, it was completely hypocritical of her to think in such a way, as Kagome hadn’t really thought of it to be the best scenario to be marrying him, either. And yet, she couldn’t help but feel hurt.
When they reached the princess’ chambers, Inuyasha opened the door for her and allowed her to step inside before following in after her. Kagome peered over her shoulder before turning to face him completely, a look etched into her features that Inuyasha hadn’t ever really seen before – disappointment.
He’d known that Kagome and himself didn’t exactly get along, having always picked on one another during their childhood years. You know, the typical things children did when they didn’t know better. Inuyasha surely wasn’t the nicest to Kagome but she hadn’t exactly won any awards for keeping her temper either.
Inuyasha didn’t think it was that much of a death sentence to be married to him.

It's sad that I have to block half of the Inuyasha fandom on here cause of saying on how SessRin is a p*dophile ship where it's not true at all I get that it's a ship where most people don't understand it and don't like it but to take it such lengths to make it seem like it's a bad ship where it isn't I'm sorry but that is just wrong

i dont think a reboot of inuyasha is necessary to be honest, i think the anime added some cool stuff. like the tsubaki episodes are cooler in the anime actually, and a lot of the filler eps are fun/cute (i like episode 98 and that one mirsan filler with the guy that wants to marry her). i feel like people would still prefer the original even if a panel-by-panel adaptation of the manga was made... a remake would show the manga's flaws.
Anon,
I understand your position, but it's your opinion which I respect. I personally would like a reboot, and it wouldn't stop someone from returning to the old series and fillers. Fillers are irrelevant to the story, so for me they are indifferent. But if you like it, that's cool.
I don't understand why you don't want a reboot so badly? After all, Kikyou could get justice, and her character finally respect and her relationship with Inuyasha as it should be, I want nothing else for Kikyou but justice.
I even heard from a friend that the author of YashaHime is trying to humiliate InuKik, so please … Kikyou deserves the best and justice and respect for her character, and she has become an "enemy" in the whole fandom. Kikyou has been the most hated character for years and that will not change because the anime shows her in a really bad light and her relationship with inuyasha, and kagome and inukag show the best light.
Let it show manga flaws, is Rumiko a god? No, she's human, she makes mistakes like any normal person, there may be some things you don't like or like about her work, there are mistakes, but at least Kikyou and InuKik are portrayed so sweetly and overall Kikyou is a really DIFFERENT character than 2000s anime.
I really haven't met a manga yet that I couldn't complain about. The author makes mistakes, but he shows his vision and fantasy in the work. I really appreciate what Rumiko did in Inuyasha. Rumiko allowed Kikyou to calm down, and her relationship with Inuyasha showed that hate cannot overcome their love, and Naraku cannot stand between them no matter how much he wants to.
If we's talking about flaws…
Tumblr media
Here is an unfinished hand, and the line is really really ugly, here is an flaw. You know who worked on the first episodes of the old series?
The first drawings and episodes were drawn by Director Inuyasha, who misunderstood Kikyou literally considered her "nemesis", Kagome a woman of "light".
Animators can publish and produce such things, but a manga that has flaws like any manga can't be? cause is good for Kikyou is unnecessary because Kikyou is portrayed so much better in the manga and shows her tender soul, and her relationship with Inuyasha is really full of love.
The improvement of Kikyou's personality and her relationship with inuyasha is part of what I'd like to see, there's more.
Even the lines of characters such as Naraku have been changed to show that the InuKik never had serious feelings for each other, while the manga shows the opposite.
They managed to introduce Kikyou's original personality in "the final act", so we could do a whole remake.
i feel like people would still prefer the original even if a panel-by-panel adaptation of the manga was made…
How do you know that? If you prefer the anime, fine over the manga, and if others think like you, fine too. Everyone has their own taste and watch what they want, but I'm sure a lot of people would like a reboot.
Sure, there's a good chance it will, but do I care? I don't care about it. Even the Japanese complained that inuyasha's production director didn't understand her character, so at least Kikyou fans would be happy justice for Kikyou and her relationship with Inuyasha.
I've seen many before yashahime want a reboot with improved characters, and we got this thing called a "sequel" So a lot of people were hoping for a reboot too.
My impression from your reboot questions.
You don't think a reboot is okay, but why do I get the feeling you're trying to convince me of your point and try to argue it in a way to make me change my mind? And are you really that afraid that Kikyou might be loved more in the fandom and her relationship with Inuyasha? The hate would be less, possibly it could be, because more people will watch the anime than they will read the manga.
Kikyou is hated more than Naraku who ruined her life and others… after all… it's really sad that a villain who is responsible for so much misery is more liked than his victim. Yes, the director did a great job. he was able to make Kikyou hated and SHE IS STILL for so many years.

“I’m sure another tree would provide more…shade,” Kouga said, using every ounce of self-control to pull away from Kagome. Everything else in him wanted to stay, to linger in her small village and drink in the lines of her face and the smell of her home.
Kagome was relentless. Her grip on his arm and heart were firm, and Kouga couldn’t help but be followed wherever she was kind enough to lead him. “But this is my favorite tree. Aren’t the blooms beautiful?

Ichiruki and Pro Shipping
It is 100% okay if someone doesn’t like the Ichiruki ship, but one thing that bugs me is how the anti Ichiruki shippers claim their relationship is a pro ship. I’m genuinely confused as to why someone would say that when there are multiple popular ships that resemble theirs. For example Inuaysha and Kagome, Inuyasha is well over 50 and Kagome is 14. Kamisama Kiss: Tomoe is well over 100 (like Rukia) and Nanami is 17 (like Ichigo). There are plenty more ships like that where it includes a human and non human in a relationship, canon or not. My concern is how is something like that okay when it’s your favorite/canon ship but when it’s Ichiruki it’s a problem. Ichiruki fans may argue that Ichigo isn’t human (which technically would be true) but anti Ichiruki fans would say that it’s still a proship because Ichigo is partly human. So Ichigo isn’t human when you want to over sexualize him, but all of a sudden his race & age matters when Ichiruki is involved. I don’t understand that. The same thing could be said for the people that also over sexualize Toshiro (which personally makes me uncomfortable). So It’s okay because Toshiro is “over 100” but is he not CLEARLY a child? If he was human wouldn’t he be considered a child? It’s the same thing with Rukia to me, yes she is over 100 but is she not clearly a peer to Ichigo or am I tripping? Idk maybe the age is a thing that only applies when you need to use it as an explanation to defend yourself but hey I guess it’s not my place to assume 🤷🏽‍♀️

Why there's actually NO love triangle in Inuyasha (looking at the story from an eastern perspective)
So, this is going to be one of my long posts - bear with me!
I see a lot of debate about Kikyo vs Kagome, and I wanted to share some thoughts on the love triangle aspect of Inuaysha. Although I am white British (originally American), I was raised with an Indian religion – and despite leaving it about 20 years ago, it never fully leaves your system. And I really think you really need to look at Inuyasha from an eastern perspective to understand the Kikyo / Kagome thing.
So, let’s first look at why I personally had such a problem with Kikyo in the beginning – and then we’ll look at why we have to see her in a different way.
Tumblr media
I have two problems with Kikyo. The first is that she was a high priestess of the village, known to be so powerful that she was entrusted to purify the shikon jewel, and so forth. She dealt with demons on a daily basis. She knew better than most that they often took on dual forms and they were deceitful. And yet the instant ‘Inuyasha’ attacked her, she didn’t so much as blink at it. She accepted his betrayal without hesitation – which tells me she never truly trusted or loved him.
Exhibit B – her proposal to use the crystal on him, to make him fully human. Essentially, this would have eradicated the world of one more demon – she was slaying him under the guise of love. It was a means to de-claw him, which to me is symbolic of stripping away all his passion and strength - everything that makes him him. He would have been tamed and weakened and in her hands. It’s pretty realistic, because a lot of women fall for the ‘bad boy’ and then work hard to domesticate him until he is unrecognisable. I just don’t like it.
So, to my mind, Kikyo didn’t really love him. She didn’t accept him for what / who he was. He was fatherless, his mother died when he was young, and he had to look after himself in a cruel world of bullies and bigots. He naively fell for the first suggestion of kindness because it was the first he ever had of it – but it wasn’t sincere.
She sealed him to the Tree of Ages and the world moved on, while he remained frozen in an older time. I see this as metaphor for Inuyasha being emotionally and mentally stuck, unable to move forward from his trauma. This is why (apart from just being a demon) he doesn’t age. Kaede is an old woman and he’s still the young naïve reckless kid in desperate need of love and acceptance, unable to grow.
Tumblr media
But Kikyo never grew either. She died and sealed away the crystal in her grave, freezing the whole moment in time. She still had lessons to learn – they both did. And this is what leads us to Kagome. She is drawn back to Inuyasha because they have unfinished business from a previous lifetime.
When Kikyo is first resurrected, her soul is removed from Kagome’s body and returned to its former body, Kikyo. But this is not how it should be – that soul is ready to move forward. It’s had time to learn lessons. In fact, an interesting question would be: what was that soul doing for nearly 500 years? Because it had to have gone through other incarnations between the feudal period and modern Tokyo. In that time, Inuyasha remained stuck in one moment, unable to grow, while his lover’s soul reincarnated again and again and learned the lessons it needed to learn in order to go back and resolve this matter.
So Kagome drags her soul back into her modern body – but leaves one crucial piece behind in Kikyo’s resurrected body: her hatred / anger. Kikyo is then a walking body of rage. Symbolically, we are seeing the soul (now in Kagome) leaving the past in the past and wishing to move forward, without the anger it held onto for so long. The anger then gradually becomes purified, we could say, through the infusion of other dead souls mixed in to keep Kikyo’s body alive a while longer. She gains the experience of other souls, to heal that anger so that it no longer lingers in the world.
However, as long as Kikyo is present, Inuyasha cannot move forward. It isn't so much about her as an individual - because we have to remember she's already there as Kagome. Kikyo's presence is a symbol of the guilt and anger Inuyasha needs to let go of. He is still emotionally stuck to the tree.
Kagome has had other incarnations to teach her the wisdom of letting go of those emotions. Her special innate skill seems to be healing – as Kikyo, she was a healer, but now she is even more so. The very birds flock to her. She is also a seer. She sees not just the shikon shards but into people’s hearts. She can read the emotions in their faces. She sees their vulnerability, and their worth, underneath all their bravado and anger. Her kindness touches people. She might struggle with algebra, but she has innate wisdom from lifetimes of experience. She is an old soul. In many ways, although Inuyasha is 200 years old, she is at least 500 and therefore older, despite appearing younger. This works in a way that ‘Twilight’ never did, because of the reincarnation angle.
Tumblr media
Kagome is patient – she’s been patient for 500 years, after all – and continues to be there, waiting for Inuyasha to let go of the past, symbolised by the phantom of Kikyo.
This is not really a love triangle – Kikyo and Kagome are the same person. Kagome learns to realise this. At one point, she finds herself in Kikyo's memories of the day she was killed, and Kagome even yells at Kikyo something to the effect of, 'That's not him! He would never do that! Why can't you see it!?' This is her remembering her own past life and reflecting on how blind she once was. But not anymore - she has learned, and she is a seer.
Kikyo is not a threat. She is a figment of the past, and both Inuyasha and Kagome need to let that past go. This is symbolised when Kagome is tested and held over the cliff by a fake Kikyo, and Kagome has to let go of her hand and declares that she doesn’t need to worry about her – she is enough in herself.
Inuyasha finally comes to see that it’s time to move forward. This is him overcoming trauma, pain and anger. He doesn't simply move on with Kagome once Kikyo dies for good - this is him releasing himself from the past and moving forward with the same lover, but in her older, wiser form. This is the moment that the anger dies. All that matters about Kikyo lives on as Kagome. He isn't choosing one over the other, because there is only one woman.
By the end, when Inuyasha has faced his demons (Naraku and more), he is a whole person and finally able to embrace true love. Kagome, as well, in all these incarnations has learned to accept and love for real. She doesn’t want to de-claw him anymore. She never wants him to go full human, but also doesn’t want him to go full demon – because it is vital that we find balance between our animal and civilized sides. It’s a Buddhist notion, this treading the middle path. Inuyasha is the ‘perfect man’ (I mean that as the western magical term), in the sense that he is equal parts beast and human / instinct and intellect. Neither aspect overwhelms the other – and Kagome is the one who teaches him how to walk this path and be whole.
Kagome gives Inuyasha the acceptance he needs to love himself and therefore love her and see love in others. At the end, when he declares to the demons in the crystal that he was born to meet her and she was born to meet him, he doesn’t just mean as Kagome – he means first as Kikyo and now as Kagome. Their karma is entangled. They have been on this path for 50 years (for him) / 500 years (for her). They share a thread of fate. However, it wasn’t their time, 50 years ago. Neither of them was in the right mental place for it to work, yet. And so it was all put on pause, allowing her time to grow, learn, and come back and teach him what she learned along the way, through all those lifetimes of experience, so that they could both grow together and finally be together. I even like to think that now he might begin to age, because he is no longer emotionally stuck to that tree.
When Kagome’s mother so quickly accepts that it’s time for Kagome to leave forever, this is such an eastern viewpoint, as well. Growing up on the location of a shrine, she clearly understands that this is not really her daughter – this is an old soul who incarnated as her daughter in this particular lifetime, and it is now her time to go back and do what she was born to do. She doesn’t belong to her mother. She was on loan, so to speak.
The ending reminded me so much of a novel I’ve read a few times called 'Mipam' by a Tibetan lama named Lama Yongden. It’s quite an interesting story, again about a romantic couple and their fate throughout incarnations.
So Kikyo is bothersome – but it’s because she is the immature form of Kagome before the benefit of 500 years’ worth of lives / experience. As a soul, she learned love along the way, to the point of becoming someone who can love nearly anyone and anything. Kagome forgives so much – including Sesshomaru and Kouga, who are rather abominable, if you think about their beginnings in the story. I see Kagome as a bodhisattva (another Buddhist concept), choosing to incarnate even when she no longer has to, in order to pass on her wisdom to others and teach everyone the path of love. And in true bodhisattva fashion, she isn’t really aware of it during this lifetime – she is humility.
So there you have it – a love triangle…but between two people! Inuyasha never chose one woman over the other, because they are the same - you can’t have Kagome without Kikyo. Kikyo struggles with it because she knows that part of herself will be gone forever (the anger). Kagome struggles with it because anger is hard to release, and yet she just wants it gone already! But they are not distinct characters, if seen from an eastern philosophical perspective - which we have to do, because the foundation of the story is that Kagome is Kikyo’s reincarnation.
That perspective is essential to understanding what’s happening, who they both are, and the ending / the path everyone takes. Inuyasha has that revelation by the end and accepts that she will return to him because they have been on this path for so long, and been separated before – by death, no less – and she still came back to him.
And when Kagome dies, I can only imagine he will wait for her to return to him in some other form, or he will die too and join her somewhere - because they were not simply born for each other as Inuyasha and Kagome but as their two souls underneath those physical forms.

Evermore - a post-canon ficlet collection for @inukag-week 2022 ❤ Chapter 6/7 - Teasing: Inuyasha suffers and Kagome kisses it better. ☆ Rating: G | Tags: Fluff, The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known | Word Count: 1861 ☆ Read it on AO3 ▶ Part 1 ☆ Part 2 ☆ Part 3 ☆ Part 4 ☆ Part 5 ☆
“What’s all this about you and Kagome and babies?”
Inuyasha cracked an eye open. Lounging in the afternoon sun beckoned him, but his back had barely touched the grass before it was disturbed. Peace was never an option; not when his nose caught up with the scent of kitsune. “Good to see you, too.”
“Hi, I’m back,” Shippo announced, crossing his arms when Inuyasha sat up. “Now, what’s all this about you and Kagome and babies?”
“Who told you that?” Inuyasha asked, bewildered by the question as much as his appearance. “When did you get here?”
“Not too long ago,” Shippo answered. “Came looking for you when I heard.”
“What did you hear?”
“Lots of things,” he said as he crouched to pick a dandelion. “Wanted to hear it from you, though.”
Inuyasha glared at him while he took his time finding the perfect spot to sit on the grass. He deflated when Shippo looked up expectantly, and the weed he’d picked twirled between his fingers.
Shippo would wait it out; Inuyasha knew that. But he could wait for a long time too.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for him, Kitsune had the upper when it came to being annoying. A weight settled on Inuaysha’s leg, and his head snapped to the side, immediately met with a head of orange hair and eyes too big for the face that framed them. He tutted, but Shippo stayed unmoving, perfectly perched on his knee and staring like a statue.
“Fine.” Inuyasha caved immediately, shooing the little kitsune off his leg. He sighed when Shippo’s feet touched the grass, and he remained standing, waiting patiently for an explanation.
“We’re thinkin’ about it.”
“Thinking?”
“And talking.”
“Talking?”
“Yes, fuck!” Inuyasha yelled, stuffing his arms in his sleeves to stave off the urge to put his fist in the ground. Patience – he needed to harness that around small people. “It’s not happening anytime soon. We’re…we’re waiting.”
“Really?” Shippo leaned forward and squinted, tipping back onto his haunches when he got whatever answer he was looking for. “Hm.”
“Just – don’t make a thing about it,” Inuyasha lamented, falling back to lay on the grass. He was suddenly exhausted, and he thought to swap the lounging for a nap.
“You wouldn’t be terrible at it.”
“Thanks.” Inuyasha tucked his arms under his head and closed his eyes, but reprieve was a fool’s wish. Two feet landed soundly on his chest, and he opened them again with a sneer.
“You’re a dummy,” Shippo said, pausing until Inuyasha opened his mouth, “but I think you’d be a good dad.”
Inuyasha’s mouth remained open until he became painfully aware of that and snapped it shut. A proper response was lost on him; stuck between wanting to argue the insult and accept the compliment, he remained silent. His gaze flitted away from deep emerald to the vast blue above them, and he watched the clouds roll as time stretched.
“You think?” he asked after a while, but his answer never came as their attention cut to a cry of their names. Inuyasha sat up as Shippo hopped to the ground, and they spotted Rin running towards them with a broad smile and a handful of wildflowers.
“Hello!” she sang, hair flying around her as she halted in front of them. “You’re back! Any news?”
“Kagome and Inuyasha are going to have a baby,” Shippo stated matter-of-factly, and Inuyasha choked on air.
Rin jumped with a squeal, and the flowers she’d been holding fluttered around them as she clapped her hands excitedly. “Oh, that is wonderful news! How long until they–”
“She’s not expecting!” Inuyasha shouted as petals danced around them, and Rin’s bouncing ceased. The last thing he needed was talk that held no merit – he’d crack.
When Shippo muttered ‘yet’, he considered cracking then and there.
“Don’t say it like that!” Inuyasha seethed. “People will think–”
“Well, how should I say it?” Shippo shot back, and they were left to glare at each other as Rin collected the flowers she could salvage around them.
“You don’t. Just keep your mouth shut, okay?”
--------------------
Inuyasha walked through the village on his way home at first. That walk turned into a steady stride when he felt a few eyes following him, nothing malicious but licking at the back of his heels like a flame. That walk turned into a near-jog when he caught some of those eyes and the knowing smiles that accompanied them. And that near-jog turned into a dash to the trees when a man he barely recognised bumped into him, offering a too-familiar grin when he realised whose path he’d interrupted.
Inuyasha burst through the treeline, cutting a path through his forest untraversed. More twigs, less purchase, but it didn’t matter as he kicked up dirt and took to the branches. Speed and nerves were on his side, and his feet carried him as far away from prying eyes and toothy smiles to exactly where he needed to be – home.
He barrelled through the doorway, startling Kagome into jumping at his entrance and giving him pause. He hadn’t slowed on approach, wasn’t thinking, and he looked over his shoulder to where he came from, barely aware of the journey he’d made to get there.
“Hello,” she said, glancing to the doorway and back to him. “What’s up?”
“Nothing,” he said quickly to dispel her worry. “Nothing”, he repeated, clearing his throat as he stepped further into their home. “Shippo’s back.”
“Yeah, I saw him earlier,” she said, leaning forward to stoke the fire. Her eyes stayed on him, and Kagome watched as he fidgeted and tried to figure out what to do, where to put himself. He was acting weird and he knew it, but he couldn't get his body – or was it his stupid fucking face? – to act cool when he was anything but. “What’s got you all….” She stalled, waving a hand towards him.
He stopped altogether when he caught up with her recount. “Did you tell Shippo?”
“Tell him what?”
“That we were, ya know. Gonna have kids, maybe. Someday. Eventually,” he stammered.
“Oh.” Kagome's eyes darted to the side, returning sheepishly. “No, actually. But he did ask me. I told him he’d have to wait, though.” She perked up a bit, like her explanation would help at all.
“So, who told him?” Inuyasha pressed, and he didn’t like how she was suddenly looking everywhere but him.
“I’m not entirely sure,” she said, and while it wasn’t a lie, she told a particular truth.
He took a few steps towards her, and she fiddled with her thumbs while her face became pinched.
“People talk,” Kagome said, biting into her lip when he towered over her. “And I can’t say I’m not one of them.” She sputtered a laugh when he rolled his eyes, raising her arms to pull at his collar when he tried to turn away. “I mentioned it to Sango,” she confessed. “She probably told Miroku…and he definitely told at least three people.”
She was batting her lashes, but he could tell she was still trying to contain the laughter. His eyes narrowed while hers crinkled.
“Yeah, that makes sense,” he muttered.
He couldn't be entirely mad, though; if she were to talk to anyone about it, it would be Sango, and unfortunately for him, the rest was collateral.
“I don’t like people in my business,” he said, tugging her towards him. “Our business,” he corrected when he watched an eyebrow tip upwards.
“Hmm. Well.” She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, and he slouched those few inches to reach her better. “There’s a lot of time for talking, living here. People gossip. Sometimes we’ll be the centre of it.”
Inuyasha wanted to argue it – in theory, she was right, but he didn’t have to appreciate it. He wondered idly if hiding her away from the world would make a difference, but the smile blooming on her face quashed it; the spitfire in his arms would have none of it.
Gossip: the concept he didn’t understand and was forced to endure while living amongst humans.
“Hate that,” he grumbled, knowing he sounded petulant – probably looked it – and Kagome finally let her laughter loose.
He wished he could join – it wasn’t that funny – but the panic relented while he listened. He watched as her lip jutted out, and he wasn’t sure if that fond smile meant he was the butt of the joke or if he just wasn’t in on it. She tipped her head to the side and freed one of her hands, drawing circles into the fabric on his chest.
“What?” he asked, finally giving in when that smile didn’t wane.
“You’re just really cute sometimes.” Her finger appeared before his eyes, tapping the end of his nose.
“Cute?”
“Yes,” she giggled, going in for a second bump, but he didn’t let her get that far, snagging the end of her finger between his teeth. She shrieked, dissolving into a fit of laughter when he set her free and tugged her that bit closer. He hovered over her face, sneaking his hand up to pinch her nose when she got a little lost in their staring contest. She squeaked, and he hid his smile in her hair before she could try it again.
She was the cute one. Too fucking cute sometimes, and she could get away with so much because of it. He didn’t mind – not when she held him up and equally kept him grounded.
“I hope they look like you,” he muttered, voicing the thought as it came to him. His lips brushed her neck, and he felt her stiffen, pulling back enough to see her face.
Her eyes were wide but accompanied by a tiny smile, and he waited her out knowing he wasn’t in trouble. He supposed it was the first time he’d spoken about it – them, whoever they were going to be – without an overarching sense of dread or doubt, and as the surprise melted from her face, her smile grew affectionate. She wrapped her fingers in the silver hair spilling over his shoulder and turned them in the light, remnants of a sunset catching it just so.
“I dunno,” she teased, leaning up to peck his lips. “They could use some of your charms.”
“Charms,” he scoffed, hauling her off her feet with a little shake. She giggled when he dropped her back to the ground, and he tugged his sword from his hip to place it against the wall.
Kagome continued preparing their dinner while they chatted over the fire. His questions became bolder, his thoughts became clearer, and his hopes became a touch more tangible. She laughed until she cried when he asked how many toes he should expect, and by the time their stomachs were full, the sun was gone, but the fire remained bright as they sat against each other in comfortable silence.
“Hey,” he said, nudging her gently. She lifted her head from its place on his shoulder to look at him, and he asked her, “You really don’t mind waiting?”
She smiled, bright as anything as she answered, “Nah. We’ve still got time to make up for.”

Hi! So I just recently discovered the Inuaysha fandom here on Tumblr and wanted to ask: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to create work for this event? I've never done anything like this before but I've read so many fanfics on AO3 recently that I'm inspired and saw that this event would be coming up soon! (Along with something almost every month).
Sorry, I'm rambling.
Hello!
No need to apologize! For the event, we would recommend you post your work both on Tumblr and on AO3 (and on other platforms if you have any). That's what people usually do for the event! You can see some examples by going through our #fanfiction tag.
Depending on how inspired you are by the prompts and how much time you have, you could write a short story for each prompts that you like. Or you could plan a larger story and have each chapter correlate with the prompts of the event. It's completely up to you! Inukag week is meant to celebrate inukag, we set up the prompts to inspire people so they can create new pieces, but if you want to ignore them and just post a inukag story that's also completely fine.
If you tag us using @inukag-week in the body of your post, it will be easy for us to find it and reblog it on our blog. You can also add tags to your post here and on AO3 so that more people can find it (like #inuyasha, #inukag, #inukag week etc). Inukag week and fandom events in general are usually great for newcomers who want more visibility for their work!
I hope that answers your question and do not hesitate to message us again if you have more questions.
