The insect Hashira had, though she tried to deny it to both herself and others, developed a crush on her fellow nurse. Shinobu would often catch herself staring at the woman, not realizing why. What about (name) was so distracting?
That’s what she keeps asking herself, hoping desperately that these foreign feelings would simply fade in time—which, of course, they didn’t.
(Name) had also found herself falling for the beautiful woman whom she had the good luck to work alongside…although, to her, it seemed rather unlucky, for Shinobu was so close to her, yet so out of reach.
Shinobu was also painfully unaware that her feelings were reciprocated within (Name); for someone so observant, she could be quite oblivious at times.
Ah, the challenges of love.
It had become quite apparent to anyone who had ever seen the two interact that they liked each other; in fact, they had each been asked on at least one occasion if they were together.
Both had vehemently denied such assumptions, Shinobu trying to mask her blush while (Name) fought down the growing heat in her face and butterflies in her stomach.
Later, upon reflection, (name) thought about how unwittingly cruel such accusations were, for instilling fantasies of a life together within her head. Shinobu simply kept her head up and went back to work with a smile, forcing down such thoughts in her typical fashion.
Fortunately, while fate hadn’t favored Shinobu, it finally decided to put the odds in her favor.
———————————————————————
Lately, Shinobu had become more and more certain that she had a crush on (name). Or, rather, had fallen in love with her. She was eighteen; “crush” was far too young and shallow a word to describe such feelings of attraction.
Shinobu has often found herself unable to sleep, thoughts of her and (name) living happily ever after running rampant in her head; not that she would ever complain. Such thoughts were a much more pleasant alternative to the typical thoughts that plagued her many a sleepless night, or day, depending on when her work would allow time for rest.
What was it about her that attracted Shinobu so? Her looks? Certainly not lacking, but there was a certain…aura around (Name) that she couldn’t quite place. The closest Shinobu could ever come to describing it was warm, comforting, and accepting.
Such a contrast to Shinobu’s boiling rage, hidden neatly under a mask of calm happiness.
Shinobu was not fool enough to think her affections would be returned, so she just hid them, as she did with all feelings she wished to remain secret. Mask up, smile on, happy, happy, happy.
Or was she?
———————————————————————
(Name) couldn’t stop thinking about Shinobu. She let out the sigh of someone so tired, yet not quite finished doing…what? Trying to win the affections of a woman who was probably attracted to someone else, not her? She should just move on, bury these feelings deep to sink and drown, but every time she tried, thoughts of the lovely woman kept fluttering back.
Shinobu didn’t just give (Name) butterflies; sometimes it felt as if Shinobu was the butterfly, flitting into her thoughts when she least suspected it. Small, yes, but undeniably gorgeous and graceful.
What was it about her that attracted (Name) so? Was it her calm, serene disposition? Her looks? Or was it simply….her? All these little melodies, coming together in glorious harmony, to be the woman (name) loved.
(Name) knew it: she was a coward, for not confessing her true feelings to Shinobu. What was he point in holding them in, hiding it, if she knew she’d get rejected no matter what?
The small, hopeful part of her pipes up, says that maybe Shinobu will, in time, like her in turn. Hope is far too powerful; it keeps holding (Name) down. Soon, she will have to confess or the misery of being turned away will be horrid. But still, she waits, and hopes.
After all, life can be surprising sometimes, and (Name) still has some semblance of a chance, right?
———————————————————————
Late at night, doing paperwork in her office, Shinobu made up her mind. When the opportunity presented, she would process her love for (Name). No more procrastinating; no more excuses.
———————————————————————
(Name) walked through the sprawling gardens of the Butterfly Mansion, inhaling the sweet aroma of the multicolored blooms. Butterflies flitted about, including her favorite, a purple and blue butterfly that reminded her of Shinobu.
She watched it as it dipped and glided, enraptured. The delicate beauty of butterflies never failed to entrance (Name); she had spent hours in these very gardens, fixated on the fascinating insects.
The soft crunch of gravel beneath light footsteps snapped her out of her reverie.
“Ah, hello there, (Name)!”
(Name) startled at the sudden noise. She turned to face Shinobu, a hint of pink dusting her face.
‘don’tblushdon’tblushdon’tblush!’ (Name) thought furiously, attempting to banish the growing flush in her cheeks. She quickly composed herself.
“Hello, Shinobu! Lovely….lovely day, is it not?”
Internally, (Name) cringed at the shallowness of her greeting. Outwardly, she kept her face the picture of calm and casual, smothering any thoughts with even a hint of her feelings towards Shinobu.
But…
In that moment, something changed. (Name) made up her mind; she would swallow her doubts and confess her true affections for Shinobu. If the Insect Hashira is brave enough to risk her life on every mission she went on, then (Name) is certainly brave enough to admit a crush.
“Good to see you here! I, um, actually have been wanting to talk to you about something, but if you’re busy, I can wait…” (Name) stuttered.
In her typical friendly manner, Shinobu said, “No, no, I’m free right now. What a coincidence; I wanted to talk to you as well! Do you want to speak first, or should I?”
“You can speak first, if you want, it doesn’t matter to me,” (Name) said hurriedly.
“No, no, I insist! You were the first to say that we needed to talk, so it’s only fair that—”
“I’minlovewithyou,” (Name) blurted out, the butterflies in her stomach multiplying as a bright blush rose to her cheeks.
Shinobu blinked at her, trying to squash down the goofy smile trying to make its way onto her face.
“Say that again….uh, slower this time?” Shinobu asked hopefully.
“I-I…I’m in love…with you…” (Name) said quietly, trying to force back the sting of tears in her eyes.
“I…” Shinobu smiled; a genuine, happy smile. She took a couple steps closer before wrapping her arms around (Name). She placed her lips next to (Name’s) ear and whispered, “I think I am too.”
Shinobu moved her face away from (Name’s) ear and leaned in. Her breath tickled (Name’s) face, and their noses brushed lightly against each other’s.
Shinobu leaned in and placed her lips softly on (Name’s). It was a gentle, sweet kiss, filled with love and affection. After a moment that felt both long and short, Shinobu pulled away, smiling at (Name), who also had a soft grin on her face.
“That was…late,” (Name) remarked quietly.
Shinobu let out a breathy laugh as the two woman stood within each other’s embrace, butterflies gracefully flying around them.

The Hashiras in a Relationship | Shinobu Kocho
Word Count: 3202
Setting: Shinobu Kocho x gn!reader, SFW
Content Warnings: none 🐛
Summary: general relationship head cannons for Shinobu Kocho as a partner, from dating to commitment.
To be loved by the Insect Hashira is to know travel, to experience the shift of a moment’s notice. Her love is as vast as the seas, and as deep as the underwater worlds that lurk beneath their surface. Unexplored ridges that have been lost time, ancient worlds swept to the depths, her love is abstract as the paintings that depict a history long lost to present knowledge, but the dare to grasp their comprehension. TO know their meaning, discover their purpose. Her love is following the wind, to dance upon the water, to bathe in the rain, to ride monsoons that plague the Indian Ocean, to sing the hurricanes that claim the Caribbean. To know Shinobu’s love is to accept the ever-changing winds of fancy, and trust that water will always remain regardless of the form it inhabits, just like that of her affections.
To be loved by Shionbu is accepting that you will have to be your most uncensored, authentic self. You will have to delve the depths that you never dared to share with another, to whisper secrets that you have brought you shame. To express your highest highs, and confess your lowest lows.
To share the moments in which you thought your heart would shatter, and your face is smeared with tears. To be authentic with all you have experienced, all you will know.
To learn of the world, of yourself, and of your relationship with such depths that threaten to drown the pits of your soul.
To be loved by the Insect Hashira, is to understand that she will not accept insincerity. She would much rather comfort you at your darkest point than accept a mask of a smile--- ironic isn’t it?
What she is unwilling enough to reveal of herself, is what she desires in her partner. The raw express of emotion, stripped of facades just for her. This is what she wants.
Shinobu is the type to be attracted to someone passionate and driven, someone unattached to social norms and expectations. It could be someone as simply unbothered by other people’s expectations, far too focused on their own.
It may be someone who is playful, and relishes in remaining true to their inner child. Someone whimsical, and otherworldly, or perhaps, just comfortable themselves to dodge society norms (tattoos, piercings, perhaps it’s the overly affectionate vibe that they are putting out in the world of gray, perhaps it is their unrelenting, unapologetic when it comes to compromising their beliefs.
The Insect Hashira would be the one to start a relationship on an off foot. I can imagine her accidentally upsetting you—she’s rather blunt. It’s not that she would intend to hurt your feelings, or insult you; it would be a statement that was more of an observation she should have kept to herself. She did not.
She thoughtlessly let it slip. And one way or another, egos have been bruised and blows have been traded.
But she’s interested.
Like really interested.
She needs to know more. Kocho is by nature an observant, curious individual, and this is what led her to studying you like a specimen. Witnessing the diversity of your personality, drawn in by unrequested kindness.
After butting heads, the opportunity to trade blows on the same ground as her intellectually had drawn her attention. Led her to, well snoop.
How else will she gather genuine information? While she’s studying her test subject you, this is when her curiosity grows deeper. The floods and overwhelms. The facts are coming in.
The way you tenderly fed a stray cat, the tuck of your hair behind your ear as you sniffed the wisteria, the sound of your voice, and the way it carried weight.
The strength of resolve when you stood between the Wind Hashira and a new mizunoto will to shelter the recruit from his wrath. Unflinching despite the odds clearly being out of your favor.
Your insistence to see a promise, even one as small as delivering Konpeito to the Ubuyashiki siblings, guided by your oath to bring them a rare sweet upon returning from a mission despite the obvious wounds to your body. The generosity of such a lavish gift kept as secret as your smile.
Altruistic. Warm. Charismatic, the natural influence you had over the younger mizunoto, perhaps brought you your wiliness to teach. All of these little facts had captivated her. So unlike herself…
she would even adore an unapologetic pervert if they were honest about it
Babbling ideas, unrealistic and idealic, as bright as the sun almost completely unaware of the world you live in. One where demons roam, and devour the innocent. Empathetic on your kills, pitying your targets, praying for their forgiveness… Intense as a fire’s gaze. Bright and burning.
Even in your depths of moments, how? How could you trust in a world that was corroding beneath you?
Sealed her interest.
She has to know more.
She NEEDS to know more.
The Insect Hashira loves that you’re a challenge. Loves that you offer conflicting views, a world view so unlike her own. Tell her more. Teach her.
Truthfully, information gathering was necessary for Shinobu to approach you romantically. She requires the security that you are who you claim to be.
She doesn’t have the patience for drama, or overtly emotional partners. She knows this, and rather risk discovering that a potential partner is more than she can handle and having to break it off, well, this is the reason she observes. For better, or worse.
But the good news is that aside from being studied like some specimen in a petree dish, you have made it past her first round.
You see, Shinobu does not settle. Why would she? Have you seen her? In fact, it’s her refusal to settle that has secured you’ve made it into the final selections.
It’s okay if you’re hesitant and confused, she’s patient. She will allow you all the time in the world you need to adjust to that you’re hers the new relationship. For The Insect Hashira, if she has decided that her affections for you are strong enough to warrant stepping into a relationship, she’s satisfied with you. you’re not going anywhere.
So, it’s okay, take your time.
She’s dedicated. Extremely so. She will give you all of the time in the world. If you want to take things slow, that’s perfectly fine with her. You want to delve deeper into the relationship, she’s all for it.
Really, being with Shinobu is that she will match YOUR pace. If her studying you pre-dating wasn’t a hint, she is more than willing to dedicate all of her time, efforts, and energy into the relationship, but please note, she expects the same in return.
If her strict selection process of a partner wasn’t clear, Shinobu is not afraid of commitment. She is by the very definition picky, but when you’ve caught her attention and her trust, well, you can pretty much assume that she is yours forever.
Even if she doesn’t verbalize it. She will, eventually, but not immediately.
On the positive, you’re dating!
You’re dating.
Dating?
To Shinobu, dating is as foreign as a concept as openly expressing genuine emotions that’s why she’s enthralled with you. The typical dance of dating, is not something she grasps properly.
She may act a little coy, she enjoys leaving a little mystery, but the reality is, she really does not understand why someone would play games. they haven’t done their research like she has.
Sadly, this confusion can will bleed over to your bonding. It will take her some time to figure out that you place importance on courtship.
Once she has realized it, or you’ve told her, well, she’s more than willing to adjust to the obscurity of dating. She still doesn’t get it. It’s silly-- but that’s okay. You do, and that’s all that matters.
You can expect a wide range of dates to take place. She’s testing the waters studying you and determining what it is you like to do. Not that she hasn’t figured it out already, but she will work tirelessly to ensure you enjoy your dates, and as long as there is the opportunity to experience something new, she’s happy.
Really, I imagine that Shinobu’s mind is always ticking, constantly considering new relationship routes, dates, and vacations. She’s a multitasker. She can and will think of the most abstract ideas while at work. Found a new way to concentrate the wisteria poison into her blade, ah, you would look lovely under a wisteria tree. It’s decided. You’ll take a trip to the Aichi Prefecture.
Being with Shinobu means, you will never be bored.
Now, don’t be confused. The Insect Hashira will take her time analyzing every possible outcome before coming to a conclusion. You can’t be surprised, she easily observed you for two years before making you hers. But this is also why when she makes a decision, she’s not likely to change it any time soon ever.
The Insect Hashira can be intimidating. If it is not her extreme intelligence, abilities, or ranks that have you uneasy. Her sharp tongue may be the very weapon that draws the first blood.
Remember how I mentioned that she likely made a blunt remark that inadvertently hurt your feelings? Yeah… that’s likely to happen a few times.
She doesn’t mean it, really she doesn’t. Truthfully, it’s not even that she registers her comment as a bad thing, to her, it’s just a statement. A simple observational fact. The positive is that, she’s honest. Overly honest. Painfully truthful.
Her intense words are in good company, the depths of her gazes. Stern stares that can captivate your soul, steel your blood. Whether it is the moment you have realized she is upset with your, or simply the moment you realize that you are being appraised.
It’s not typically something she does with mal intent. Rather, she’s determined to unlock every mystery that you carry. Any burden that you may wish to hide.
She will tell you exactly what’s on her mind, if there is something that she isn’t fond of about you—but to her credit, Shinobu has no desire to change you.
For that matter, do not expect Shinobu to change for you either. Take for example, if you were to adapt an alternative appearance whether it’s alternative, or non-gender conforming, she really doesn’t mind.
She’s accepting of you, and all of your hobbies. In fact, she’s more than willing to be spirited away on any shopping trip you may wish to take. Shy, don’t worry, she will compliment you until she sees that lovely blush across your face. Someone dares to say something, to threaten your joy, she will shame them out of existence.
Tongue sharp and ready, merciless as the coy smile on her lips. You will always know her guidance, her devotion, and protection. Gods help those who cross you.
Otherwise, she really won’t comment much. She’s mostly along for the ride, but if she notices something she thinks would add to your outfit that collar choker, then she will offer to buy it for you. Otherwise, she’s more than contempt to go with the pace you’ve set.
This includes all of your hobbies. You love to spend hours dedicated to painting, she’ll happily sit to the side with a book, maybe she’ll join if you invite her, or she’ll simply study the way you approach your canvas.
You’ve decided to take up gardening? She’ll pick up a book on botany and poisons and enjoy watching you pursue your joy. Hiking? Very well, she’ll select a historic nature hike, or a botanical garden with information pamphlets. She’s so cute when she reads.
She respects your preferences, and expects the same in return. While hse loves the opportunity to learn, and share with you, she’s not likely to change her own stance, interests, or preferences. She likes what she likes. Just like you like what you like.
To add to it, she’s not easily persuaded. In reality, Shinobu is unlike to change our view point on anything without a solid reasoning. In fact, there have probably only been a few situations in which she has changed her mind.
Salt to the rub, she’s actually more likely to bring up what YOU said in the conversation. Don’t count on her forgetting, she will bring it up at a moment’s notice if the situation warrants it, or if you’re attempting to reopen negotiations on something.
In fights, you’re likely to feel that you are in a one-on-one K.O with a brick wall. Left with little choice to chisel away at the structure, huffing and puffing will not move her. Your best bet is to speak objectively and rely on facts.
That being said, Shinobu isn’t prone picking fights. In reality, she isn’t fond of engaging in spats, especially with you. There’s nothing to be gained, but that doesn’t mean she won’t lose her temper from time to time.
To be honest, this is something you’ll need to keep an eye on, we wouldn’t want her to bottle anything up for too long.
When she does engage in an argument, expect her to behave irrationally. Very few things lose her composure like you do.
She will be thoughtless and biting. It’s… it’s going to hurt, and to her credit, she realizes that. Despite her stubborn nature, she will be the first to apologize if she lost her cool.
Just to be clear, she’s not changing her position, Kocho is just sorry that she behaved the way she did. She is right, she knows it She should have handled it with more grace, in fact, the next time you bridge this conversation, she will be attempting an alternative route.
She is logical, and relies heavily on facts. Come prepared.
For this reason, its important to note that Shinobu really does try to improve herself, all the time. In every way imaginable. So, you will be stunned the first time she has an emotional outburst because she doesn’t want you to see that side of her.
She wants you to view her as a wise, independent, and capable woman. Her more aggressive moments registering as cute, and sassy. Which is why she will apologize sincerely and profusely for her outburst.
Speaking of her surprisingly sassy moments, it’s important to note that Shinobu’s humor… tends to miss the mark. She’s comfortable with darker humor that may not suit all audiences, and for the most part, she does a great job of navigating social expectations, especially if she knows that social interactions are a priority for you. She’ll adapt quickly to ensure the happiness of the relationship, but occasionally, she will slip.
Your friends maybe shocked, and occasionally mortified, but she won’t be embarrassed. because she didn’t realize no one got the joke
The Insect Hashira is familiar with the fact that not everyone understands her unique sense of humor, or the abstract concepts of her thought process. If you understand, than she will be pleasantly surprised, but if for some reason, it has gone over your head, know that unlike some of the other Hashiras, she’s okay with that.
The Pillar is open to re-explaining, but really, it’s okay. You don’t have to understand her.
Just accept her.
Shinobu’s logical nature can and will cause frustrations in the relationship from time to time. She really doesn’t mean for it to be. Really, she doesn’t. Concealing emotional depths is just in her nature, and often times feels like a second language.
If you bridge an emotional debate or discussion without briefing her first, she’s at risk of shutting down. Analyze, she needs times to analyze. Should you take the time to let her know what it is you want to discuss, then she will be able to respond appropriately, attentively and supportively.
If she’s blindsided, she’s likely to flee internally, she’s uncomfortable. And feels exposed, but it won’t always be this way. As time goes on, she will become more adapt to expressing herself; she just needs a little practice.
Really, in time, she will be more than happy to open up emotionally to you, and be readily available, but until that time comes, just talk to her about anything and everything else.
Shinobu is a private, and independent person, and it’s important for you to know that she is comfortable being alone. Actually, in the beginning and even later aspects of the relationship, you may struggle with the fact that sharing burdens is not easy for her, but In fact, more often than not, she enjoys her own company, exploring complex trains of thoughts and deep worlds, so if you find yourself wanting some space, or time out with friends. She’s happy to oblige.
Have fun, she’ll be here
If you’re the type to want separate lives, coinciding as a unit, she’s one of the better options. She’s happy to follow her own path, and allow you the space to pursue your own, but don’t believe for a moment that this means she’s unfaithful.
In truth, Shinobu has such high standards and expectations, I imagine that she is one of the least likely to stray from the relationship finding a second partner is far too much work.
Regardless if you decide to intertwine your lives as much as possible, or live parallels, Shinobu is consistent, loyal, and present. While she may not show up to every little thing in your life, she will be there for what matters, good or bad. Job promotion, or the loss of a family member, you don’t have to ask for her. She’ll be there. Ready to offer support and unconditional love to the best of her abilities.
In fact to be in a relationship with the middle Kocho is to know unconditional support. You’ve secured her love, then you should know that she will be on your side. Always.
She’ll encourage you through business endeavors, through hardships, pursuing new interests, whatever it may be, Shinobu is by your side, holding your hand.
To interweave the two of our lives in matrimony, or simply long-term commitment, means accepting a few things about the Insect Pillar you may not have been otherwise introduced to.
Shinobu is meticulous, and prior you were only aware based off of her pungent for planning dates. However, this affects other aspects of her life. She has high standards, and takes pride in herself, in her work, and in her home. Expect the home to be maintained properly.
Not that she is always a perfectionist, it’s just more often than not. In the rare moments when she is comfortable with the imperfections, small little things, you will hear her little laugh.
You’ll find her in her little laboratory set up, a concoction of wisteria poison none potent to the human touch dripping all over her nose, her laugh infections and adorable. The light of the day catching the deep purples of her eyes, amused and warm.
Feel free to laugh as you delicately catch the poison from her nose.
These moments are rare, and you need to savor them when the opportunity arrises.
If you are hoping for kids in the future, you will need to discuss this. Immediately. It’s not that Shinobu doesn’t dislike kids, I just don’t see her wanting any of her own. It’s nothing personal, and not that the idea of children is more than she can bare, or a deal breaker.
I imagine that she finds children fascinating, not in a “ahhh how cute, my ovaries”, but in a genuine curiosity. Childlike herself, eager to understand the inner workings of the young mind. She enjoys the freedom of being able to explore, and follow a pursuit like a mad scientist to the field. Children may not be a great fit.
Unless you’re willing to be the primary caretaker, it may just not work.
Alongside her perfectionist tendencies, Shinobu is organized. In some ways, such as the nitpicky way she expects the shoes to align in the genkan, in otherwise, it lends itself to the strength of the relationship.
She is not one to miss an important date, and will always have her schedule readily memorizes so she can respond to you at a moments notice.
Don't expect flowers. If you receive them, Kanae had them sent for you.
It's not that Shinobu doesn't think about romantic endeavors, she does actually spend more time thinking about love than you may expect. Emotional inexperience aside, she is dedicated to a long-term, happy, healthy relationship.
She depends on her actions to communicate her devotion to you. This could be something as small as laying out your uniform for you, preparing dinner after you’ve had a long patrol, and even inquiring if you need assistance with your work.
These acts will come fairly naturally to her, and without little difficulty. She’s observant by nature, and quick to pick up on your needs—I dare say she’s a natural caretaker in this sense. If she notices that something was not received well (such as the dispute mentioned earlier), she will take great care to avoid repeating the same mistake.
Words of Affection will, for all obvious reasons, be an uphill battle. She’s willing to make the hike, and struggle against the winds, but for the first few rounds. It’s going to be hit or miss.
The positive is that as time goes on, this will be less strenuous. As I’ve said, she just needs the practice, she’s a fairly quick learner. That being said, for how blunt her nature is, I imagine that she would put little thought into declaring her love.
“I love you,” will be regularly used. Because it’s true. So why would she struggle to say it?
For all of her social and emotional early inabilities, I believe physical affection would be natural to her. In fact, I suspect that she would adore it. It’s an effective way for her to communicate her love. Why wouldn’t she utilize it? I imagine massages are in your future, and rather frequent.
hug at the end of the work day, pat on the head when you’ve accomplished a task, grazing your cheek when you’re deep in thought, yes, I suspect that for Shinobu, physical touch is an expedited way for her to express her devotion to you, and she is not shy about using it.
With her inexperience reading social cues and the atmosphere of the room, I can imagine she would unintentionally fluster you in a crowd. Ah you just looked so cute, how could she not kiss your forehead. You weren’t paying attention, how else was she supposed to get your attention.
If this is a problem for you, you’ll have to lay down the line, and take some time. She will hold your hand.
Of all the love languages, Gifting would be, frustrating. Her perfectionistic tendencies will show their fangs, and she will not pick something up if she is not satisfied with her choice. It’s not that she doesn’t want to gift you a present, it’s just… that wasn’t good enough. For it to be a gift she brings home to you, it will not be random. It will be drawn out. Thoughtful. An illicit of validity that she knows you best, and a token worthy of her affection.
you’re never getting a gift Kanae will make sure her sister sends you something.
The reality is, to know Shinobu is to know love. It’s to know devotion, regardless of the distance. Never mind the time spent apart; your hearts are one. To know that no matter where you go, you will always carry her devotion with you. To never doubt her dedication. To know the security of time apart, to know that upon your reunion regardless of the years or distance between, the relationship will continue just as you left it. To be loved by the Insect Hashira, is to know unconditional acceptance. Intense eyes that have met the baring of your soul, delighted in your tears, embraced your sorrows of joy. It is midnight conversations, raw and emotional. Thoughts you dared never utter, embraced by another without hesitation. It’s knowing she will come and go, as you will too. Separate, but always destined to return to one another. To be loved by Kocho, is to be challenged, and spirited away the next day. A romance as deep as the oceans, as turbulent as the winds, and as destined to remain as the lingers of her kisses against your collar bones.
Always intertwined.
Regardless the distance.
Hearts as one.
