living as a system with aphantasia, and no inner world.
we didn't know we had it until we were 18. it isn't a huge struggle, but it's quite the shock to realize all of the things you missed out on growing up that other people had. we are honestly still in disbelief that being able to picture things in your mind is something most people can do. to us it sounds like some sort of fictitious superpower.
and the idea that it is "standard" for systems have full worlds within their minds where people have told us they can feel and see and hear and so much more? yeah- we will never be able to even begin to process that. /npa

the ability to visualize and see what’s happening in headspace is sometimes over emphasized in system spaces. so, remember:
it’s ok if you can’t visualize vividly, and can instead only see unclear shapes and colors.
it’s ok if you can’t visualize at all, due to aphantasia or other reasons.
it’s ok if you don’t have a headspace, or if your headspace is very simple and small.
it’s ok if your system has a headspace, but certain members don’t have access to it.
it’s ok if you feel like your headspace works differently than others’.
you’re a valid system with or without a vivid headspace. you don’t need a headspace or the ability to see your alters at all in order to be plural.

All the striving for material security, for beauty, for a stable life,
wanting to transform, even altering your appearance,
it would actually get in your way
of achieving a sense of safety in the world.
Too much focus on society, the other people, the community you're living in,
would strip you the joy of just being an individual, an individual with their own way of thinking, their own way of feeling things.
An imaginary barrier has been placed inside, distancing you from true intimacy with life.
A faraway ideal would push your own light into a forgotten closet.

an arrow ready to be shot.
Your life's trajectory is rising straight to the highest height.
You would feel overwhelmed,
or in the dark.
Am I the one that shot the arrow,
or just a leaf caught in their flying path ?

you might forget the simple pleasures
of being with friends and families,
of relaxing and just sit back for a while.
Too much force would break the bow string.

you are transported to this school of heart
to learn again and again.
But somehow, some lessons were always avoided.
The feeling of falling in love makes you become the character in those fairy tales,
where the main character is taken to an enchanted place,
staying there and forgetting about the mundane life,
which is the actual relationship itself,
and the work it would take to make the relationship last.

Creating a beautiful environment for others to thrive.
Always try to say nice things,
be helpful to others,
over thinking the smallest detail.
Would they agree with me ?
Would they accept me into their circle ?
How would I be without my friends,
without the people around me ?
There is a well hidden fear inside that you my not really aware of.
A fear of the unknown,
of the misty path lying ahead,
of losing control of your life.
Clinging to the small details would make you blind to the overall path you are walking on.

We don't have an inner world.
I mean, not really. Sometimes we can imagine a place really hard and see it there. The "safe space" we created with our old therapist is one such example. A cool, quiet place for us to visit to calm down and relax and enjoy ourselves when things get overwhelming.
Thing is, I don't really consider that to be my inner world.
I have to consciously think of it to bring it up. The other alters don't necessarily "chill" there. Sure, we can invite each other there as need be, but we're all more like visitors sharing the same daydream.
And we have other places like that, too. Places or scenes we imagine just to facilitate some form of communication with each other. A white room, a library, a forest, a spaceship.
But none of them are really an inner world for us.
No, honestly, any attempt an an inner world has actually made things worse for us. As in, made our dissociation actively worse, not better. For some of us, we would confuse internal experiences with reality too much. Others were basically get stuck in this daydream and experience a lot of difficulty trying to leave. Still others refused to leave; after all, the inner world was so much more pleasant than the external world.
And honestly, it's not too bad. We tried to force ourselves to have an "inner world" like all the other systems we seemed to hear about online. We were told how it could help with communication and having a safe space, or having things for other alters to do when they're not fronting. Even our old therapist originally tried to help build one with us. But honestly.... forcing one on us isn't the right thing to do.
If anything, the void nothingness is more calming and relaxing for us. Our various trains of thoughts are always running anyways, we don't need the hubbub of an "inner world" to entertain us. We don't need internal avatars to know which train of thought is talking to us right now. Just letting ourselves... be, in this chaotic swirl of thoughts and memories, instead of forcing some kind of organization on us, has been a lot better for us. Accepting that this is how we work made our communication stronger. Working with what was already there and trying to understand that made things so much better for us.
So for those of yall who don't have an inner world, who tried to make one but just couldn't: its okay. You're no more or less of a system for having one.

Developing an Inner Safe Space for Parts
Note: This post was written for people with dissociative disorders, but anyone else can use the methods here if they're helpful!

This post is all about inner safe spaces! What is an inner safe space, though? Here's what Coping with Trauma-related Dissociation says:
"Inner safe spaces are images of places where you can be safe, relaxed, and cared for. These images have been shown to be helpful to many people, not just those with dissociative disorders. This type of imaginal activity is well known to produce a feeling of relaxation and well-being in those who use it regularly. If your inner experience feels so jarring, unsafe, and frightening, as it often does in individuals with dissociative disorders, the ability to imagine these spaces becomes especially important and helpful."
Inner safe spaces can be useful for many things. You can use it to relax & alleviate anxiety. It can be a tool for soothing dissociated parts of the self, or aide in your communication with them. You or other parts can enter your inner safe space to protect yourself from feeling overwhelmed or potential triggers. Overall, creating an inner safe space can help make your mind a safer, calmer place.
So, how do you make one? All you have to do is imagine it!
Your inner safe space can be anything you want to imagine. There are no rules and it can always be changed! You can create one imaginary place for all parts of your system to share & add to. Or, each part of your system can create their own inner safe spaces to match their own needs. Some people already experience some sort of inner world, too. This can always be changed in order to make it feel safer and calmer for all parts of the system.
🌟 Ideas for inner safe spaces:
Outdoor areas like a meadow, beach, forest, mountain, etc.
Buildings like a cabin, tree house, castle, library, etc.
Vehicles like a car, pirate ship, submarine, spacecraft, etc.
Something underground, underwater, in the sky, or in space.
An entire planet or world of your own.
A fictional world that brings you comfort.
An inner safe space isn't a safe space if it doesn't make you, including all parts of you, feel safe. A good place to start is by writing down things that make you feel safe. If you don't know what makes you feel safe, try looking at what makes you feel less unsafe. It might also help to ask a loved one or therapist for help!
Invite your system to include their own needs, too. Try not to judge them even if you disagree. It's important for all parts of the system to feel safe.
🌟 Ideas for things that you can add/adjust to make your inner safe space feel more comfortable:
Add games, food, and movies that you like
Create individual rooms for each part of the system
Give yourself an inner appearance that makes you happy
Add your favorite colors, sounds, smells, & sights
Add people, characters, animals & creatures that you like
Give yourself a comfortable bed, with soft blankets & maybe even some plushies
Add pride flags!
Create a protective force field around your safe space
You or other parts may want to have a safe space that no one else can intrude upon and that's okay. It's important to respect each other's privacy. You can also adjust the inner safe space to make communication between parts easier! For example, you could add intercoms, mailboxes, telephones, or even a meeting area for aiding communication.
🌟 Having trouble visualizing, or can't visualize things at all? Try...
Drawing or painting it.
Writing about it.
Building it. You can use a video game like the Sims (get it for free!) or Minecraft.
Basing it off of a real place.
Collecting photos/videos of what you want it to be like. You can find royalty-free images on Unsplash and Pixabay. Or you create a Pinterest account!
Filling a journal, document, blog, or discord server with pictures, writing, and anything you want about your inner safe space!
Trying guided exercises for creating inner safe spaces. (IMO this is best done with a therapist's help.)
Asking your friends, therapist, or loved ones for their suggestions.
Creating a physical safe space instead of an inner one.

hey butterbean!! For you to fully live in the inner world you will have to leave the outer world alone just leave it as it is you dont have to worry about what is happening out there or what anyone is doing. Try to fully grasp this dont just read along what im about to tell you "The outer world is ONLY a reflection of the inner world" and ik you've heard this a million times but most of us refuse to fully believe it, read it again and again until it clicks. Don't be scared to fully let it go like COMPLETELY. Walk with confidence that whatever you imagine will come to pass its just how it works. Stop clinging to it just let it go for your own good and turn to your imagination, the true reality, the one that can and will give you ANYTHING you want INSTANTLY, isnt that what we all want?? well why do we refuse it when imagination gives it to us? You can literally be flying in the sky right now but you refuse the wonderful experience the imagination gives you and call it "only in my head", "just imagination","fake" well that is who men call God. "What do I have to think how do I have to act?" That is your choice, do you wanna eat a donut right now, dont refuse this little desire either, fulfill all your desires down to the little ones, act how you want to in your imagination.

Here's to systems who have different views of their headspace/innerworld between different people!
Sometimes, innerworlds can be perceived differently from headmate to headmate. So here's to:
Headmates who see their headspace more vividly than others
System members who have access to areas the others don't
People who can't access their innerworld for whatever reason
Those who don't have a headspace to begin with
Sysmates that live exclusively or primarily in their headspace
Those who have their personal areas, such as their own room, or somewhere they can do their hobbies
The ones who have fluctuating, inconsistent, or nonexistent internal appearances
Systems who have a paracosm as their headspace, or in addition to a different innerworld
Those who can only be interacted with by certain people (we have someone like that in our system!)
And anyone else I missed!
We think it's super cool that every system has their own experiences with their innerworlds, and we love hearing about them! Please drop us an ask if you're in the mood to share something about your headspace or related exomemories!

Headspaces and inner worlds can look and function incredibly different from system to system. Some systems may find that roleplaying or writing out events that have happened in their headspace can help them process, solidify, and better understand the things that have occurred. There are no grand or unusual edges to this house.
The interior is sparse.
It lacks warmth and sunlight.
Like a house in the middle of windy weather lacking regular visits from its residents.
There is no big, loud front door to invite others in.
The residents here would be quite aggressive and masculine. There could be a boy, an older man, someone of authority, but something feels old and tired.
Your inner home stores lots of hidden angers, disappointment, and wounded emotions. And they may not even yours. Some are from others living rent-free in your inner home. They would sometimes try to send you messages to let them free but not too successful.
There is a thick veil shrouding this home, creating confusion.
Some innovation is needed. Light up the house, open the windows, and let the cold and distant thoughts have a walk outside. Maybe some will walk away for good, leaving behind space for a warmer, livelier one.
2. Rose quartz

I see a big mansion or a castle ruled by a feminine figure. A queen, but there seems to be no king.
Only the soldiers and the court messengers are male.
The place is hectic, people are scurrying around, talking, gossiping. Lots of music and beauty.
Foreign messengers or traders would come and go.
There is a certain fairytale air about this place. The place would change seasonally, periodically under the influence of the current moon phase.
People here are well bahaved because they know that their ruler, even though benevolent and sometimes quite detached, is still strict.
I could see that a big feminine force has a lot of influence on your inner world, giving you structure. You may sometimes do things a certain way just because you want to please that force. This queen in your inner home may be the manifestation of an authority figure in your life or a representation of a power inside you.
3. Citrine

This place is literally the centre of yourself.
Everything that ever been born, created, and manifested comes from this place.
This is the centre of wisdom, the sanctuary for tired travellers, the convergent point for spirits, the portal of giving and receiving.
It is vibrant, solid, intimate, and mysterious. Like a temple or monastery high up on a mountain.
Here, you could recharge yourself and receive messages from the universe, from the ancestors, from distant teachers.
The residents living here are the wise ones. They have come here to give you precious lessons, so listening to them would be quite beneficial.

Interesting thing that I see a lot of system experience, but nobody says anything about it: inner world time goes differently than IRL time. Some places align with the IRL time, while in some, time either goes faster or slower depending on where it is in the inner world. According to our observations, it's also way more common in polyfragmented systems or systems that have over 20-25 alters.
