This spectacular red gown was designed by Adrian for Joan Crawford in the 1938 film The Bride Wore Red. The gown, which supposedly weighs around 30 pounds due to the weight of all the beads. It is still in existence and in extremely good condition considering its age.

The movie The Bride Wore Red was in black and white and the full beauty of the color of the dress was not able to be fully appreciated until later. The dress made its second appearance in The Big Store in 1941 in a fashion show scene, where it was worn by an extra. Though this film is also in black and white, Groucho Marx does explain "This is a bright red dress" because "Technicolor is sooo expensive!"  In 1943 gown appeared in Du Barry Was A Lady, sans the cape on Inez Cooper as Miss December. This time the dress is seen in color. The gown appears to have been worn by Angela Lansbury for a promotional photo shoot around 1945, and the 1968 film used the dress for promotional imagery for The Legend of Lylah Clare, with Kim Novak as Lylah Clare.

by the time they're allowed to step on the field, claire's expression has already turned all shades of annoyed. she knows better than to burst at anyone - one wrong move and the press will be all over her talking about how she didn't do her job right. it takes so much patience really, to have such a responsibility and still remaining grounded enough to make sure everybody is in position and treating survivors with the care and dignity they deserve.

"gabe i can't see the whole quarantine zone from here, can you fly the drone a little higher please?" she requests through the comms, cheerful roger that! paired with the drone lifting up. "thank you." she counters as gaze drops on her tablet. a sigh pushes past lips, tired smile offered to pedro and inez walking by. and in all this claire still has no idea where the hell ark and neil are - one she can imagine, already on the field after their briefing on the way here ( though switching up comms would be appreciated ), while the other... well, she's stopped trying to understand anything neil does these days.

when head tilts up, leon is standing by the tent entrance, greeting her with his usual cool guy demeanor that makes claire's heart flutter even though she would never admit it out loud. "i sound mean because you kept making me wait," she remarks, tablet left on the table along with her notes. "you guys took forever to give us the clear." frustration in her tone is hardto miss - sure her organisation is meant to deal with the aftermath of an operation, but it sure would be nice to have some more cooperation.

"is there anything else i need to know before letting everyone in?" she knows leon would never let her walk in a dangerous situation, but then again asking again to be sure can't hurt anyone. slender fingers idly play with the zip of his leather jacket as gaze sets on his features - an implicit way to ask him if he's fine, even though if everything goes as smooth as it's supposed to, she'll swing by his hotel room in between waiting for their respective flights to depart.

"good luck you might pass on your favourite girl too, perhaps?" blue hues study her surroundings for a moment, surprised about the absolute silence in the tent. hand reaching for his and bringing it close to her lips to press a kiss on its knuckles. she notes it's all scarred, dirty and bloody - whether his or someone else's she's not sure. "i'd clean you up myself but i still need to find ark before getting in the facility." or more like what's left of it. "see you later? and please tell gina if you're coming or not next week, she needs the exact number to move onto the catering situation."

I wish you'd write a fic where all the characters from Shadow and Bone were in the Anne of Green Gables universe. I'd love to see where you would fit them all in. ♥️

Alec Morrow, commonly known as Old Elijah Morrow’s boy, had not expected to get the White Sands school, but there had been some mix-up with the Avonlea folk he couldn’t quite follow, probably because it had involved a liberal quantity of the sour raspberry cordial Mrs. Vincent Pye made every August and insisted was just as good as Marilla Cuthbert’s, which no one agreed with but didn’t bother disputing; the sun would sooner come up in the West than you could get a Pye to admit even the slightest flaw. In any case, Alec had been looking further afield for employment, resigning himself to living in a boarding house, back home at Gregory Place only during the summer when he could find enough work as a farmhand to keep his mother and sister, when the letter arrived offering him the position, seemingly a miracle. He didn’t spare a moment before penning a quick reply of acceptance, packing up his worn carpet-bag with his best suit, the heavy wool jersey Ursula had knitted him the previous winter, and the book of metaphysical poetry that he’d used his book prize money to buy, much to his mother’s displeasure.

It had been miracle enough until he’d been faced with Caspar Breakwater and Jesse Fane, wily Vaughan Corner, the three boys making enough trouble it took a week of his most stern expression and the threat of the threat of being switched to allow the littlest ones a chance to master the alphabet. He found he could count on laconic Matthew Ellery more than he’d expected and red-cheeked Nina Harte not at all, though she was kind and would always share her lunch with any student who’d arrived with only an apple or slice of bread. Zoe Lennon fancied herself queen of the senior class, quite fond of tossing her head and showing her dark curls to advantage, though it didn’t escape Alec’s notice both that she was an exceptionally gifted student of mathematics and blushed whenever Nicholas King glanced her way. It didn’t escape Inez Grafton’s notice either, but she was a quiet girl with her hair in a crown of braids, her collar and cuffs always neatly buttoned, and her recognition was contained to a twinkle in her eyes Alec as the teacher must pretend not to see. John Knight was a rough-hewn, sullen boy who came to school only when his father could spare him, but cheerful Teddy Stone took the other boy under his wing and somehow managed to make him smile, usually when their heads were bent together over Teddy’s slate; Alec knew Teddy drew caricatures of all his classmates but he’d earnestly assured Alec he’d never draw one of the teacher, much to Alec’s secret disappointment.

All in all, the White Sands school was a lot of work, but work Alec had the strength of mind and will to master. He studied alone in the evenings, determined to be granted admission to Queen’s and then Redmond, even if it was harder for someone without a partner, as he’d heard Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe had in each other, both the talk of the shore villages. Alec Morrow was a shadow in comparison to their brightness, but he didn’t mind. He couldn’t, when he couldn’t change it and couldn’t waste the energy in what his mother would call “Alec’s horrid black sulks” over the solitary nature of his existence, the loneliness of having no friend nor peer of his own.

It was that way until the day he found Alina Stark, the slight orphan Mrs. Anne Cooper, his parsimonious boardinghouse keeper, had taken on a hired girl to help in the kitchen and with any other chore she could think of, poring over his book of poetry. He’d it left open on the little table he used as a desk, a gull’s feather used as a marker. Alina’s lips moved as she read but other than that she was entirely still, the day’s waning sunshine lending its little warm color to her wan cheeks and drab pinafore, the wisps of hair coming free from her long plait. It was that way until he saw the way the startled fear in her dark eyes changed to pleading and then wonder when he started reciting the poem she’d been reading. It was that way until he’d offered her lessons of her own when she said she’d never be able to attend the school and when he’d handed her the bigger piece of shortbread he’d bought to share. And when his fingers had briefly touched her own and there had been the most tremendous flare of light between then, within them, the poem they’d been reading brought to life and something more, as the glow stayed between them, even after he’d closed the cover of the book and she’d smiled at him with something more than gratitude, an affectionate tenderness that woke an answering emotion in his own heart, a feeling he’d never known before but somehow recognized entirely.

For anyone who might be curious about my writing at all, here is some lore for a fantasy novel of mine, written from the perspective of one of my main characters and including a hint of my conlang, An-Kobold.

In order to study magic we must define it. Firstly we must clarify that magic is not peculiar to any place, although it is true magic is more fecund in certain places. In fact, it is all around us, it is in us, it runs through us. It animates life and thought, including powering the soul and making up the better part of one's life force, and governs the celestial mechanics of our world. It is best to understand it as both an energy and a sort of primitive essence of thought. Magic has its own ways. Ethereal beings speak of pure something, raw existence, vra in the Godspeak, which magic is a more specific form of, yet retains a capacity for great fluid potential.

The practice of magic, therefore, is to shape that potential and to put it to our use. 

In doing so, we draw upon both the magic within ourselves, and that around us. We use the techniques called spells to channel magic. In effect, our endeavour is to give the vra, the something, a form, so it can become more specific. Vra can be shaped into many things, from a chair to a gust of wind to a rush of vigour. Magical techniques vary considerably but all of them are a way of engaging with the vra, using a magician's mind and effort to tell it what it shall be.

Your own magical essence is your anchor and your probe in connecting with the wider world. When magic begins to drain you, when you exert yourself and feel the effort, this is because of the expense of your magic. If it is used up all at once without recuperation, you will die. Remember this. Like any undertaking, it is important to understand and remember your magical limits lest you hurt yourself. All technical spells, those academically defined to be spells, require the use of your own magic, including those that connect and commune with the outside world for effect. Common tricks without this exertion, like the practice of jumping three times over a reflective surface to confuse your trail, are not considered spells.

All spells are composed of two essential parts, traditionally called “the will” and “the way”. Will is channelled by a concentrated mental state and allows you to access your own magic and that around you. It requires focus, effort, the ability to open your mind and to conjure some imagination. If you are tired, lose focus, or doubt too much, the magic will fail. “The way” refers to what is modernly termed technique: whatever motions, items, sigils, writings, incantation or situations are needed for a spell.The technique helps to direct and channel your will towards specific tasks and to connect with specific things. This is why more powerful spells are rarely simple, and can indeed be fairly complex. Not all steps in a spell are equally necessary, some may be added for additional safety or convenience, and their addition is subject to judgement. Students should generally follow the form they are given however, as it is dangerous (or otherwise prone to failure) to experiment without the experience to judge. Students should be aware there are rules at Akhenu University against the unauthorised practise of dangerous experimental magics, so if students wish to work creatively they should cooperate with instructors to ensure their actions are safe and approved.

A practitioner of magic is generally called a magician, which is the accepted academic term and may be used for any gender, race or species. Other colloquial terms you may encounter are mage, sorcerer, sorceress, witch, wizard, warlock, shaman, druid, enchanter and necromancer. Some of these terms are more specific, for example: "druid" imputes a connotation of natural and religious magic, particularly that of older times. Regardless, we will content ourselves with the term magician. Who is and who is not termed a "magician" is a social protocol. Of course, most people practise at least some basic magical techniques as a matter of everyday convenience. However, the term "magician" generally denotes someone with more refined skill. In our academic definition, it denotes someone with formal training and study. This is not only provided by universities, but also private tutors, certain independent magic specialists, and by the gods and the teachings of their temples. We would, in contrast, term someone with sufficient skill and understanding but less formal training to be a “hedge magician”. This is most common with wild magic specialists, who might learn through a combination of intuition and communion with ethereal beings, particularly nature spirits. This form of informal wild magic is potentially dangerous, especially given wild magic’s particular reactivity to emotion. It is hedge magicians practising wild magic in dangerous ways that have led to that branch’s negative reputation in sections of polite society.

Branches of Magic-

It is fairly well-known there are three main branches of mortal magic; ritual magic, academic or craft magic, and wild magic. Sometimes they are four, with academic and craft magics separated. These are categories of style and general practice, and not necessarily strict groups through which everything is clearly assigned. There are as many possible ways to do magic as there are recipes for dinner or languages that have ever existed. And there is significant overlap among the branches. They generally hold as useful and coherent categories though. Those who draw from all three branches are referred to as polymages, although most polymages use particular kinds of each suited to them, perhaps connected by some common theme or suited to their mundane skills.

Ritual magic (iśordzoikht) is based on ceremony, metaphor and tradition. It commonly includes symbols, divine patronage, cultural artefacts, the use of Godspeak and interaction with spirits. Ritual magic is procedural but imaginative; cultural and philosophical. It is the ideal branch of focus for those wishing to interact with ethereal beings without the restrictions of academic magic or dangers of wild magic. Indeed, a number of academic spells for dealing with spirits are adapted from ritual forms. For those seeking magic with wonder, the mysticism of ritual magic may make it more appealing.

Academic (runedzoikht) or craft magic (ferlisdzoikht) are arguably two ways of understanding the same magic. As a collective, they might be called professional magic or logical magic. They are to do with knowledge, tools and physical acts. Unlike ritual magic, they evoke logic, learning and understanding, rather than tradition and imagination. Mechanical in nature, they are the most precise and least likely to go awry, but also limited by their contained nature. These are the magical forms most associated with civilised mortal society, and least reminiscent of the practise of ethereal beings. Nonetheless, like all forms of magic these practices can be used to interact with nature and are fundamentally a practice of connection with the magic of the world (as well as drawing on the magic on oneself).

Wild magic (fulhandzoikht) is the rawest form of magic. It has the least form and technique, and is somewhat dangerous, as it can be harder to control, and likely to have dramatic consequences if control is lost. It draws upon emotion, a connection to pure magic, the elements and cosmic force. Wild magic is often elemental, thought it can cover most tasks. Kobolds favour certain forms of elemental wild magic as common practice, whereas humans (in Gethermaine at least) tend to distrust wild magic.

Common Rules of Magic

Magic is the least precise of the sciences, not that it cannot be understood, but a student (and we are all students) may spend years on a single seemingly simple question. Nevertheless, across the three mortal branches of magic, and to some extent in the magic of more ethereal beings, there are common rules. Not rules of the strictest sort, but principles that hold true because they allow for magic's variety, and for that element of mystery noted to make it enticing to people who would otherwise have no interest in learning such a formal discipline.

Familiar spells are easier to do than attempting new spells, much like learning to write and memorising the form of the letters until it becomes easy.

In a similar way, it is easier to interact with an object you are familiar with, especially a possession over which you have rights.

It is easier to make more of something or change something into another thing, than it is to make something from nothing.

It is easier to interact with something closer than something further away.

The focus, energy and imagination of a practitioner is the greatest influence on the result of a spell, more so than technique, although some techniques are more fussy than others. A very tired or ill person may be unable to muster any magic at all.

Personalities affect aptitudes, and what techniques are suitable for you may be more easily divined with reference to your broader skills and interests.

The rules of magic ownership are unique, although they can become connected to mortal systems.

8.1 The most important note is that magical possession considers time altogether rather than moment at a time; it often lingers across holders and beyond death. Likewise, it may be more receptive to certain future owners, although destiny is a very tangled subject.

Likewise, the rules of magical contracts are not like mortal laws, especially beware of the use of metaphorical language. Some spirits, persons etc may attempt to use this to trick you, others may simply be heedless of your confusion.

Mindless things (see Diveda Wysboldt, "A Modern Dictionary of Magical Terminology" 1097 FA, for a good definition) are not conscious but they have a spirit which must be respected. Plants and fungi in particular have individual souls as they are living organisms.

In order to commune with mindless things you must understand their spirit, and you must make your mind open and keep your imagination bright. Hesitation and doubt over such commerce is a major obstacle. Similar to branches of magic, you may find some things more easy to deal with depending on your disposition and how that compares or accords with theirs.

Water and wind are the most changeable and variable of the basic elements, water being more transformative while wind is more frenetic.

While fire may seem the most destructive, nothing or nothingness (gae in the Godspeak, an element only known from rare aethereal descriptions) is the source of all ends.

Fire and wind work well together, because they are both energetic, but they can also impede each other and result in mutual destruction.

It is not necessary to be particularly dramatic when performing magic, but students may find this helpful to work up the spirit to tap into magic and bring forth their own energy. Hand gestures vary in utility, but it doesn't hurt to add them for the benefit of directing focus and energy, even if not required. Similarly, closing your eyes may help with your mental state. Students should find their own particular way of doing things.

Seven Classes of Spells by Effect

Transportation-

The rapid and unseen movement by magical means of entities, objects or places or magic related thereto.

Including targeted teleportation and more persistent portals, travel between planar realms, summoning, binding and related wards and enchantments.

Transmutation-

The alteration, replication or creation of entities, objects or places by magical sculpting of matter.

Including copying things, enlarging them, turning one thing into another or creating something from "nothing".

Manipulation-

The magical direction of energy. This includes the energy of movement, heat, light, vigour and life.

Including the movement of objects (what is termed telekinesis), conjuring winds, illusions of light, and spells to hearten the body.

Fascination-

To influence the thoughts and/or movement of subjects through magical means.

Contracts-

The making of magically-binding terms for exchanges or obligations.

Contracts inherently exist in magic, and occur mainly from the energy of the wider network or system with only.a small contribution of the magic of the parties involved. They include not only trades of one thing for another but also forms of employment, oaths of loyalty, binding promises, magical rules and resolutions of dispute. The only universal aspect is that they are formed from the agreement of both parties. However it is possible to agree without realising you are making a magical contract. A magical contract cannot be formed without the explicit intent of at least one party to invoke the magic, but if they propose magical terms it is possible for the other party to agree without meaning to make it magically binding, so long as they intended to agree to the terms themselves. Your greatest protection is that a contract cannot be formed without all the terms being named, and anything that is not mentioned you will not be required to abide by. However, this does not mean that all the meaning and detail will be clear. Reassuringly, a properly-trained magician should also be able to detect the workings of magic in the air to know when they are agreeing to magical terms, although you will not feel your own magic affected until you have already agreed.

Dispellation-

To remove, prevent, weaken or counteract a spell by direct magic against the spell itself.

Including disenchantments, anti-magic wards and disruptive spells.

Divination-

To enhance, focus or gain senses and insights beyond what is normally possible by magical means.

Including scrying, true sight spells that pierce illusions and glamours, certain forms of necromancy and various forms of spells to sharpen or direct the bodily senses.

2016: X-Men Mission: Fall of the Mutants: In the early hours of the morning, Logan alerts the team to a group of mutants attacking a boatload of humans and the team scrambles; arriving, the X-Men target the Morlocks, who have the upper hand, but not for long; just as the X-Men have things under control, the human “victims” start attacking both groups of mutants, who cooperate to defend each other; with the mysterious uniformed people defeated, Callisto, Sunder and Cyclops check on the hostages, only to find them dead and Callisto accepts the X-Man’s offer of help. Warren texts Bobbi after their time away. Jessica posts Lady Gaga lyrics about boys in cars.

2017: Maya posts a picture to her journal about why your argument is invalid. Doug posts a picture to his journal about an unlikely trio of freedom fighters.

The Fourth Annual Davey Awards - The Nominees!

Hello! Every year I hold the annual Davey Awards for brilliance in motion pictures that move. This is our fourth year, and it promises to be one that is a year. Let's get to the nominees. Please note that there are some big movies (The Boy and the Heron, Poor Things, The Iron Claw, Ferrari, Wonka, The Taste of Things, for example) that I haven't been able to see and won't be able to see for a while. However, The Boy and the Heron's score was released to streaming services recently and I like the little impatient so-and-so that I am listened to it, and felt compelled to include it for consideration.
