I’m fortunate that I’ve found someone who has that philosophy … [Love] is the most powerful thing. When it comes to my family, friends, a relationship … it centers me. You only live once, and I want to be proud of everything that I do and just have fun. I want to be able to say that I had a really fulfilled, fun life.”
Talking about Nick, an ex:

March 30th:
Justin sits down with Complex and talks about Selena and growing up in the game:
Complex: Obviously, you and Selena are fodder for the gossip blogs everyday. How hard is it to keep your relationship private?
JB: It’s so hard, because everyone’s got a camera-phone, and now everyone wants to get their picture on the blogs. So they’ll send anything that they have to the blogs. So you don’t really get any privacy. If I want to go out to eat, if I’m in L.A., I just have to expect that there’s going to be someone there. That’s the only thing that I don’t like.
Complex: Is it tough for you guys? A lot of people like, hate it. Do you guys hate it, or is it like, “This comes with the territory, we’ve got to deal with it, it sucks?”
JB: I’m kind of both. I don’t like it, but I understand it. I’ll be covering my face or something, and the comment that pisses me off so much is, “Oh, get over it, Justin. You’re famous. People are going to take your picture. Just suck it up. You’re rich. You’re making a lot of money. Suck it up. This is one of the things that you have to do.” I’m like, “Yo I just got off an eight-hour flight. I’m tired. My eyes have bags under them. I’m not trying to take pictures.” I’m not going to come to your house, wake you up out of a deep sleep and start snapping your picture, no matter how you look right now. It doesn’t matter. When I get off a flight, I’m not trying to sit there and let them take pictures of me. I’m tired. I’m scratching my eyes. I just don’t like taking pictures in general.
Complex: There’s been high profile couples in history: Justin and Britney, Jay and Beyoncé. Jay and Beyoncé kind of kept it private. Everyone knew they were together, but they kept it quiet. Even with the kid, they kept it so under wraps. Do you learn anything from those relationships? And do you guys talk about that?
JB: Yeah. I mean, for me, it’s like, there’s no way to hide it completely, because then it would be unfair for us. Then, we’re not even able to have a relationship. It’s like, “You take this car, and I’ll take this car, and then we’ll meet up at the spot. Then, you go in this door, I’ll go in this door. We’ll end up crossing ways. You get back in this car. We’ll cross over, do a James Bond. You go through the kitchen. I’ll go through the back area. Then we’ll meet in the dressing room and see each other.” At that point, it’s like, it’s not even a relationship. You’re just hiding from everyone. That’s unfair and unhealthy, man.

Seventeen: You’ve planned some amazing dates for Selena - who taught you to be so romantic?
Justin: I’m just trying to make her happy, that’s all. I think it’s important to make all woman feel like they’re princesses because every girl is a princess, I’m serious.
Seventeen: Will.I.am said he thinks it’s important for people to experience heartbreak so they’ll have something to sing about. What do you think?
Justin: I haven’t gone through it so I don’t really know what it’s about. I don’t think anyone wants to have heartbreak. I haven’t been in that deep a place yet, but I’m still looking. I’m still learning every day.

“They were showing these little elderly couples, and it was so cute. Then all of a sudden we’re both looking up and we come on the screen and it’s like … it was so awkward. It was so weird. I mean you have to kiss, right?”
"They wrote a song together and it’s beautiful - it’s amazing - I don’t know if it will make the album, but if not I’m sure they’ll release it at some point, because it’s a really great record. It’s kind of like … it’s Taylor and Justin combined. So it’s a little bit of an upbeat song, but it’s very acoustic.”

UsWeekly: At least you get quality time with Selena. What do you love about her?
Justin: I dunno! She just carries herself in a very elegant way. And my family loves her, which is usually hard because my mom’s really picky. My mom wants, you know, a good Christian girl with good manners.
UsWeekly: Do you understand girls better now?
Justin: Well, every girl is different, so they are hard to figure out. Like, the way most men work is the same. But each woman works differently. It’s like I can’t figure them out! But I do know girls like you to tell them you love them and that they’re all beautiful all the time. So I do that a lot with any girl I’m with. I tell them that as much as possible.
UsWeekly: Most romantic gift you’ve ever given?
Justin: I’m not saying to who- but I gave a girl an expensive diamond bracelet recently. It was so pretty, I knew she’d love it!
UsWeekly: Would you and Selena ever do a duet?Yeah. I think she’s very talented.
Justin: That would be very cool. We have nothing planned- but I’m not opposed to it!

Selena and Justin were strolling an outdoor mall in Calabasas when paparazzi began harassing them as they were trying to leave. According to witnesses (and photos taken) this photographer was so aggressive that he even blocked Justin's car, and was said to be rudely harassing Selena "about the herpes (coldsore) on her lip" while trying to capture a photo of her. After they began harassing Selena, Justin got out of his car and went to smack the camera from his hands and him and the photographer both fell off the curb.
The photographer was taken away by ambulance AND filed a police report that named Justin as the culprit. The Los Angles County Sheriff's office is investigating and say they will talk to Justin.
One of the girls who supposedly was there shared this:
"long story short; the paps were blocking his car and wouldnt move, he got mad after asking them to move, justin tried to knock their camera, the pap and justin both fell off the curb, he lost his shoe and hat while fighting him, selena and justin left and came back because selena lost her phone, and the paps would not get out of her face, and then they left and now the paps are trying to get money from the whole thing"
Another girl that was allegedly there as a witness had nearly the exact same story as above, except in addition she added the paparazzi were rudely asking Selena "about the herpes on her lip," and that's when and why Justin knocked his camera.

Detectives want to interview Justin and Selena after a photographer claims he was attacked by Justin at a Calabasas shopping mall Sunday, but authorities continue to seek additional witnesses.

Law enforcement sources said Selena is among the witnesses detectives would like to talk to. Detectives are investigating claims by the photographer that Justin struck him after he snapped photographs of Selena at the Commons at Calabasas Shopping Center.
The photographer complained of pain and was taken by the Los Angeles County Fire Department to a hospital, where he was treated and released, officials said. The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing, stressed that the probe was in its early stages.

June 28th:
Justin cut short a pre-taped interview with U.S. radio show Mojo in the Morning after the host compared him to Justin Timberlake and quizzed him about a potential romance between his mother and One Direction's Harry Styles.
Thomas Carballo, the host of the show, was in the middle of a phone chat with Justin when he (rightfully so) took offence at his line of questioning - and hung up.
The 10-minute interview got off to a bad start when Carballo told Justin he thought he was Timberlake the first time he heard him.
Justin said, "That's funny because our voices sound nothing alike... Saying I sound like somebody else is definitely not a compliment."
Justin eased up when talking about his new song Maria, which was inspired by the woman who falsely claimed he was the father of her baby last year, but he lost his cool when Carballo got personal and asked if he was worried about Harry Styles falling for his mum.
The DJ said, "Do you worry about Harry around your mum, since he likes older women?"
Clearly upset, Justin then mumbled something about Carballo's mother and, as the radio presenter explained his mum was dead, Justin had already hung up the phone.
A record company representative then tried to convince the DJ that Justin's phone had cut off, explaining, "I can't get him. He's in a really s**tty area."
She later revealed Justin was "really upset" with the questions, adding, "He probably won't be calling back."

Surrender deadline nears as Ethiopia prepares Tigray attack | Ethiopia
A surrender deadline for Tigray forces is just hours away with Ethiopia's military threatening to bombard the regional capital - a city of half a million people.
Ethiopia's prime minister on Wednesday rejected growing international demands for dialogue and a halt to deadly fighting in the northern Tigray region as “interference”, saying his country will handle the conflict on its own as the 72-hour surrender ultimatum expires at 16:30 GMT .
“We respectfully urge the international community to refrain from any unwelcome and unlawful acts of interference,” a statement from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office said as government forces encircled the Tigray capital, Mekelle, with tanks.
“The international community should stand by until the government of Ethiopia submits its requests for assistance to the community of nations. We reject any interference in our internal affairs. ”

Artillery fire
A news agency in Ethiopia's Amhara region, meanwhile, reported more than 10,000 Tigrayan troops had been “destroyed” during the three-week conflict raging in the mountainous north.
The report by the regional government-run AMMA agency in Amhara, where authorities back Abiy's federal forces, could not be verified and there was no immediate response from the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).
Abiy, last year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, insists on calling the conflict a “law enforcement operation” while his ultimatum for TPLF leaders to surrender ends ahead of a final push to arrest them.
Abiy's government has warned Mekelle's residents to move away from TPLF leaders and military installations saying there will be “no mercy” - language the United Nations human rights chief and others have warned could lead to “further violations of international humanitarian law”.
Communications remain almost completely severed to the Tigray region of some six million people and it is not clear how many people in Mekelle are aware of the warnings and the threat of artillery fire.
Diplomats on Tuesday said UN Security Council members in a closed-door meeting expressed support for an African Union-led effort to deploy three high-level envoys to Ethiopia.
Three AU envoys - former Presidents Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Kgalema Motlanthe of South Africa - were due to arrive in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, two diplomatic sources told the Reuters news agency.
'Great concern'
The European Union foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said late on Tuesday the fighting is seriously destabilizing the region and hostilities should halt.
“I expressed my great concern regarding increasing ethnic-targeted violence, numerous casualties, and violations of human rights and of international humanitarian law,” said Borrell after speaking to Ethiopia's foreign minister.
Tigray's regional leader Debretsion Gebremichael could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.
The TPLF dominated Ethiopia's government for more than a quarter-century but was sidelined after Abiy took office in 2018 and sought to centralise power in a country long ruled along ethnic lines. The TPLF opted out when Abiy dissolved the ruling coalition, then infuriated the federal government by holding an election in September after a national vote was postponed by COVID-19. Each side now regards the other as illegal.
The international community has urgently called for communications to be restored to the Tigray region so warring sides' claims can be investigated, and so food and other desperately needed supplies can be sent as hunger grows.
Tumblr media

Misery continues
The United Nations says it has been unable to send supplies into Tigray since the fighting began on November 4, when Abiy accused the TPLF of attacking a military base.
Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people have been killed in three weeks of fighting. More than 40,000 refugees have fled into Sudan. Nearly 100,000 Eritrean refugees at camps in northern Tigray have come close to the line of fire.
Misery continues for the refugees in Sudan, with little food, little medicine, little shelter, little funding and little or no contact with loved ones left behind in Tigray. “We are absolutely not ready,” said Suleiman Ali Mousa, the governor of Gadarif province.
“Help us so that we don't die,” said one refugee, Terhas Adiso. “We came from war. We were scared we were going to die from the war and we came here, we don't want to die of hunger, disease. If they are going to help us they need to help us quickly. That's all I am going to say. ”
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, reports continue of alleged targeting of ethnic Tigrayans, even outside Ethiopia. Three soldiers serving with the UN peacekeeping force in South Sudan were ordered home over the weekend, the forces said in a statement
Abiy's government said it aims to protect civilians, including Tigrayans, but reports continue of arrests, discrimination, house-to-house searches and frozen bank accounts.
In Somalia, Ethiopia has disarmed several hundred Tigrayans in an AU peacekeeping force fighting al-Qaeda-linked fighters.
On Tuesday, Ethiopia's state-appointed human rights watchdog accused a Tigrayan youth group of killing about 600 civilians as federal and local forces both claimed advances in the war.
It is impossible to verify statements made by either side since phone and internet connections to Tigray are down and access to the area is strictly controlled.

Author Interview: Gloria Chao
I’ve been beyond excited for Gloria Chao’s upcoming YA book American Panda. Set at MIT, American Panda follows Mei, a Taiwanese American college freshman who’s set to follow her parents’ plan for her to become a doctor, marry the right guy, and have kids — but life, love, and her own dreams get in the way. As a Taiwanese American, I’m of course psyched for more Taiwanese representation in YA, and can’t wait to read the book when it comes out February 6th. Today, here is Gloria Chao to talk about her new book!
Just this summer, Want by Cindy Pon, a sci-fi thriller set in Taipei, was released. Now half a year later, American Panda is weeks away from joining the few and proud ranks of YA books starring a Taiwanese protagonist. Who is your intended audience for American Panda? How did you go about writing your book and its portrayal of life as a Taiwanese American for that audience?
I am so honored to join the proud ranks of YA books starring Taiwanese protagonists, and I’m so grateful to be a part of Jennifer Ung’s fabulous list, which includes Cindy Pon and Sandhya Menon. My intended audience for American Panda is anyone who is struggling with who they are and where they belong. I believe that the book’s themes of not fitting in and searching for your path is universal, but I also think it will particularly resonate with child of immigrants who grew up with parents similar to mine.
I wrote this book with the goal of capturing an honest portrayal of one Taiwanese American experience: mine. I wrote for me in the initial drafts so that I could get my story down, and then I let the industry and readers in during revisions.
Did you have a central theme or message in mind when you were writing American Panda? Can you tell us what it is?
I wrote the book I wish I had as a teen, and I wrote hoping to show teens they aren’t alone. I was too embarrassed to tell my friends in high school about my struggles with the cultural gap, and I hope this book will show those readers that their struggle is real and that it can get better.
Not many YA books are set in college. Why did you choose college, and specifically MIT, for Mei’s story?
Mei’s story needed to be set in college because she had to be out of her parents’ house to start asking herself what she thinks and what she wants. My own personal self-discovery happened in college, and I felt that setting was the right place for Mei to find herself as well.
MIT is my alma mater and I wanted to capture its unique, supportive, and zany community, where being a nerd is lauded and weekends are spent chair surfing, climbing on the dome, and yelling at the movie projector in lecture halls. Since MIT is a place where students can be themselves, it was the perfect place for Mei to learn who that was.
Aw, you got me right in the college nostalgia feels. So, the cover of American Panda is adorable, and features dumplings which is at least 40% of its charm. What’s your favorite type of dumpling?
I haven’t met a dumpling I didn’t like, but if I had to choose a favorite, I would go with the soup dumplings from Din Tai Fung. They have some fancy ones with shrimp and crab, but their plain soup dumplings are the standard-bearer.
Truth. Do you have another book or project brewing?
Yes! I’m thrilled to be working with Jen and Pulse again. My second book, Misaligned, will release fall 2019 and follows a Taiwanese teen outcast in a small, white Midwestern town. When a second Asian family (including an attractive boy her age) moves to her town, she is swept up in a forbidden romance and down a rabbit hole of dark family secrets. The book explores race, identity, and the difficulty of communicating, especially within family.
Eep! Can’t wait to learn more about Misaligned! And finally, we always ask this question at Rich in Color. What upcoming YA books by/about people of color are you excited for? Share your list with us!
I am delighted to say there are many upcoming YA books by/about people of color that I am excited for! My list includes but is not limited to (in no particular order): The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan, Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles, The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon, Summer Blue Bird by Akemi Dawn Bowman, Picture Us In The Light by Kelly Loy Gilbert, Dread Nation by Justina Ireland, A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena, The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo, and A Thousand Beginnings and Endings by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman.
That’s quite the list. *Takes notes.* Thank you so much for stopping by! For those of you reading along, be sure to grab American Panda when it comes out on February 6th!
Gloria Chao is an MIT grad turned dentist turned writer. She currently lives in Chicago with her ever-supportive husband, for whom she became a nine-hole golfer (sometimes seven). She is always up for cooperative board games, Dance Dance Revolution, or soup dumplings. She was also once a black belt in kung-fu and a competitive dancer, but that side of her was drilled and suctioned out. American Panda is her debut novel, and Misaligned is forthcoming fall 2019. Visit her tea and-book-filled world at gloriachao.wordpress.com and find her on Twitter and Instagram @gloriacchao.

The Scent Movie 2020
Allow us to lower proper to the chase...or proper to the screaming as lots of the people on this record would like! Not solely am I married to a prime house haunter, I've been a giant fan of horror films (additionally known as monster films) for years. In my expertise, as a fan of the style, listed below are my prime ten monsters of all time! The Scent Movie 2020
10. Kraken (1981)
From the 1981 Conflict of the Titans, this can be a creature that stirs the creativeness. Though the Kraken is a creature of delusion, it's the movie model that everybody remembers. Who might overlook the top scene of the unique Conflict of the Titans the place the Kraken comes for Andromeda? (What he wished her for isn't clear to me. Did he plan to eat her? Invite her to go for a swim?) At any charge, the Kraken was delivered to life by the stop-motion animation of Ray Harryhausen, a legend in horror and fantasy films. The picture of Perseus turning the Kraken to stone is basic and so is that this multi-armed monster on this author's opinion.
9. Creature From the Black Lagoon (all variations)
There have been many films about terrifying sea creatures, however Creature From the Black Lagoon continues to be the very best. (Sorry, Jaws!) Launched in 1954, it incorporates a monster-like gill-man found on an expedition within the Amazon. Like many well-known monsters of the silver display screen, the Creature spawned sequels. The unique Creature of the Black Lagoon film is being remade for a 2011 launch, in keeping with the IMDB Web page.
See Also
eight. Mummy (Boris Karloff)
Boris Karloff makes his first look on our record! The Mummy, directed by Karl Freund, is a 1932 horror movie from Common Studios. It starred Karloff as a revived historical Egyptian priest known as Imhotep. Whereas the film isn't a drop-dead scare fest, it's a basic that's within the collective reminiscence of our society. When individuals consider mummies, they invariably consider Karloff shuffling out of his sarcophagus in bandages. The Mummy was semi-remade in The Mummy's Hand (1940) but it surely was Karloff's model that started the Mummy films.
7. Michael Myers (all variations)
Michael Myers is the one who began the slasher style. He first confirmed up in 1978's Halloween as a younger boy who murders his older sister, after which returns house years later to kill once more. His fights with Jamie Lee Curtis within the first two Halloween films are excellent examples of how scary film chases ought to work. Though, I believe Michael's fights with Donald Pleasence (who performed Dr. Loomis) are the very best components of the Halloween movies. The one detrimental features to the Halloween films to me are the continuity points. As an example, Halloween III, though not a foul film, has nothing to do with the opposite installments. Additionally, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later virtually ignores established continuity from earlier films with no clarification.
6. Dracula (Bela Lugosi)
Bela Lugosi was a Hungarian actor, finest recognized for enjoying Rely Dracula within the Broadway play and basic Common Studios Dracula movies, too. The now basic Dracula that made Lugosi a star got here out in 1931. Though the film is a little bit gradual and never as thrilling as different Common classics, such because the Frankenstein movies, Lugosi made the movie work. Irrespective of what number of vampire films are made, too, that is essentially the most memorable. Ask anybody who's Dracula they usually instantly consider Bela's Dracula. His Dracula is an icon.
Tumblr media
5. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund)
Robert Englund is finest recognized for enjoying serial killer Freddy Krueger within the Nightmare on Elm Road movie sequence. Based on Wikipedia, he acquired a Saturn Award nomination for Greatest Supporting Actor for A Nightmare on Elm Road three: Dream Warriors in 1987 and A Nightmare on Elm Road four: The Dream Grasp in 1988. I'm not shocked. He was glorious as Freddy. The brand new Freddy can not maintain a candle, or dingy pink sweater, to Englund. He approached taking part in Freddy with a mix of horror and comedy. His witty banter along with his victims is the stuff of legend.
four. Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.)
"Even a person who's pure in coronary heart and says his prayers by evening, could turn out to be a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is vivid."
If you speak about werewolves, there may be none higher than Lon Chaney's Wolfman within the 1941 Common Studios film. From the long-lasting make-up to the gypsy curse, it's Chaney's Wolfman that society is aware of finest, and with good cause - it's a darn good film that stands the take a look at of time.
three. Frankenstein's Monster (Boris Karloff)
Do I actually have to write down that Boris Karloff's portrayal of the Frankenstein Monster is a basic creature of the cinema? The crash of thunder, the scorching laboratory machines, the monster's hand moving-these are the pictures all of us have embedded in our minds. No model of the Frankenstein Monster will get higher than Karloff's model from the basic 1931 horror movie.
2. Leatherface (all variations)
Leatherface is the principle killer in The Texas Chainsaw Bloodbath horror-film sequence. He wears masks product of his victims' pores and skin (which is the place the identify Leatherface comes from) and is the character from the film who usually carries a chainsaw. Not solely is Leatherface one of many first slasher-type villains however he's drop-dead scary! Whereas I believe all variations of Leatherface are scary as heck, the very best Leatherface actors have been Gunnar Hansen (from the primary Texas Chainsaw Bloodbath) and Invoice Johnson (The Texas Chainsaw Bloodbath 2). I nonetheless assume the scene in Bloodbath 2 when Leatherface runs, chainsaw roaring, out of the darkened radio station towards the lead feminine actor is horrifying.

1. Jason Voorhees (all variations)
Certain, Kane Hodder has performed Jason greater than every other actor, however I am unable to choose one Jason that's higher than one other. Every actor who performed the undead slasher Jason Voorhees introduced one thing new to the position. Jason Voorhees is the killer from the Friday the 13th sequence. He first appeared in Friday the 13th (1980); though, he was not the principle villain within the first film. Jason is a superb character due to the long-lasting hockey masks, the creepy camp setting, and since you really feel some sympathy for him. He was a deformed youngster who was mocked by friends and ignored by camp counselors. He additionally loves his mommy. (Watch the films and you will notice what I imply.) As a result of he evokes sympathy within the viewers, he's a little bit like Frankenstein's Monster however undoubtedly extra evil.
Agree with my selections? Disagree with me? Put up a remark. And bear in mind to look at over your shoulder when strolling within the woods at evening. The blokes above could also be stalking.
It might be no nice coincidence that the scariest film of all time was launched within the 1970s, a decade infamous for cult killings, hallucinatory medicine, civil unrest, stunning imagery, and a public consciousness that was nonetheless very entrenched within the wrath of God versus the duplicity of the Satan. "The Exorcist", directed as a play of insanity and hellfire by William Friedkin (and primarily based on a e-book that was supposedly primarily based on a "true story") is a superb movie that set the usual for horror--so excessive in reality, that it spawned 1,000,000 sequels, imitators and montage methods that we so simply take as a right within the CGI age. To see The Exorcist immediately continues to be a visceral delight, although it is unlikely viewing it can result in any miscarriages or seizures, prefer it did throughout its debut, little question benefiting from a little bit of group hysteria. It's a movie that has aged barely, however that also packs an emotional wallop, even with a whole technology of desensitized nihilists who grew up taking part in GTA.
Horror and Gore
The Exorcist goes for scares over gore, although there are a number of bloody homicide scenes right here and there. Friedkin rightly understood that the inexplicable and the surreal are really the scariest components of a nightmare, which is why he went all out to rework an innocuous little lady into an obscenity-spewing, spider-crawling demon crammed with nothing however contempt for mankind. Friedkin's inventive use of low-cost visible results is spectacular, and more practical than 100 computer-animated corpses. Pazuzu is really one among cinema's best villains, and maybe due to the spirit's random, indiscriminate nature. Nobody was protected from an offended spirit, and the truth that Friedkin allowed it to own a tragic little youngster (surpassing Hitchcock's in-the-shower vulnerability) was really the top of our fourth wall consolation zone.
Find out how to Watch It
The subliminal messages within the movie add to the creepiness issue. For the very best outcomes, watch it sober, at the hours of darkness, and watch it earlier than all of the tens of millions of imitators. Do not be shocked in case your honey calls for you to place the DVD outdoors the home earlier than returning to mattress!
Did You Know?
It's rumored that Ellen Burstyn solely agreed to play the position of Chris MacNeil, if she did not must say the scripted line "I imagine within the satan". After all she received her means.

Drum roll please…. in partnership with Laminex, today we share the finalists in the 2020 The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards!
From incredible Australian homes in the Residential Architecture category; to thoughtful, detailed craftsmanship in the Handcrafted category; to innovative and inspiring ideas in the Sustainable Design or Initiative category, the thing I love most about our Awards program is the broad range of projects it encompasses – big and small! It really presents such a thorough and varied snapshot of the design landscape in this country, and if this Awards program is anything to go by, there’s so much to celebrate.
We have 119 finalists (!) across 10 categories – Residential Architecture (supported by Brickworks), Interior Design (supported by DeLonghi), Landscape Design, Lighting Design, Furniture Design (supported by Jardan), Textile Design, Handcrafted, Sustainable Design or Initiative (supported by Country Road), Collaboration and Emerging Designer (supported by Phoenix Tapware).
The shortlisting process this year was not for the fainthearted! Over countless emails, Zoom calls and a couple of socially distanced meetings, we worked alongside our 25 judges to refine each shortlist. Honestly – it wasn’t easy, the calibre was so high across the board, and we’re so grateful for every single entry. THANK YOU to everyone who entered, and of course, to our expert judges for lending their time and wisdom to the process.
While each shortlisted project is listed below, the photographs here represent only a small sample of the lineup! You can see more about each finalist right now on our Awards website. We’ll be taking a closer look at all these projects over the coming months, as we get closer to our Awards Ceremony in November. (Fingers crossed on that!).

'No Fiat five hundred techno!': why electronic popular music in Stopper is putting off|Music|The Guardian
Tumblr media
"Messy in the greatest possible technique," mentions Cork developer Uncertainty of the epiphanic knowledge he invited 2015 at a storehouse go crazy in Estate Property, north London. "It was really loosened up feelings. Safety and security-- although I really did not find several-- were actually audio, and also there were massive sausages all night. I 'd never really professional just about anything like that in Ireland."
He was actually in London as a result of English developer NKC, one of the makers of the club sound understood as tough drum, then merely a Soundcloud tag. Doubt (real name Ollie McMorrow) and also nationals Tension (Dylan O'Mahony) and also Syn (Reneé Griffin) put together their own label, Flooding, a year after their challenging drum one night stand in Greater london. After finding out, trying out and dawdling along with close friends in Cork, all it took was actually NKC's rambunctious parties to liquify their aggregate obstacle.
Flooding and also an internet of other producers in their 20s coming from the small Irish south-coast city-- Numbertheory, Lighght, Ellll and Superfície-- are now bring in names on their own in International group songs circles, along with syncopated mutations of percussion-driven digital music. Although they are actually not all conveniently grouped all together, the common measure is a primal drum-laden noise where rhythms roll at breakneck velocity. The songs offers most of these youthful performers a sense of purpose and also identification-- regardless of whether most of all of them are actually leaving behind Ireland for a new beginning, amid the sanitising of young people society as developers desolated different venues, and also a raging housing problems, with increasing being homeless as well as the appearance of Dublin as being one of the globe's most expensive metropolitan areas to live in.
Stopper has broken new ground in Irish music prior to. In the 1980s, it was the extremely unlikely property to a vibrant reggae scene, the cello-brandishing post-punk ensemble Five Decrease to the Sea, and also Microdisney, the county's solution to Fleetwood Mac. Yet it was actually the nightclub Sir Henry's, established in the late 70s, that opened up several in the area to nightclub music, especially property. "Sir Henry's was ground absolutely no," points out Stopper property songs trailblazer Shane Johnson, who co-founded a night there certainly phoned Sweat that brought in global stars including Kerri Chandler, Cajmere and also Derrick May. "Certainly not merely for the club setting, but also for the neighborhood rock scene prior to it."
Structure on its legacy, Jimmy Horgan, that manages nearby report outlet Plugd along with Albert Twomey, has been a cornerstone of nonconforming popular music in Stopper, frequently holding the brand-new kind of producers upstairs in the establishment's real-time space, a site phoned the Roundy. "The man takes a genuine rate of interest in every kind of songs that's created and also played in the metropolitan area," producer James O'Connell, 25, who documents as Numbertheory, distinguishes me. "He's absolutely for the lifestyle."
Facebook Twitter Pinterest Actually coming from Dublin, Horgan is unassuming in his evaluation of the city's vivid percussive popular music setting: to him, it is actually the artists'unrelenting imagination that has created it all achievable."Most likely the first hint I got of this noise was when Superfície-- then going under the title Sexworker-- came by a few trials of his keep tracks of, perhaps back in 2013 or even 2014,"Horgan keeps in mind.
"Me as well as my coworker were actually blown away."Members of these youthful performers, normally in properties or even apartments, are where portion of this Stopper drum act were actually birthed. McMorrow, whose papa and also gramps were each drummers, points out:"Percussion has always been actually a big aspect of my lifestyle."And at 14, O'Mahony happened to love performers like Burial and labels like Warp as well as Hyperdub, as well as decided he might perform it, also, pirating manufacturing program, messing about with the functionalities, and also spending the last 2 years at college trying to make one thing"from another location decent". While participating in the same university course, O'Mahony met Griffin, who had actually been actually capturing as Syn, as well as would hang at her area after class. She presented all of them all, consisting of O'Connell, to a collection of brand new, eardrum-bursting sounds from labels including Her Records, Discolor to Mind, and Sidereal Aircraft. Superfície, a Brazilian-Irish manufacturer now located in Berlin, presented them kuduro, baile funk as well as batucada, while tensions of percussive popular music promoted through labels like Príncipe and Naafi, increased their perspectives even more. Lighght, Also Known As Eamon Ivri, simply discovered Flooding--
"a real inspiration "-- by means of Soundcloud, aimlessly as well as belatedly, prior to he ever before met all of them, despite their proximity as well as similar rate of interests. Flooding's first release, a fun nine-track collection, showed up in 2017, a year after they developed. They determined that they needed a center for "properly talking over tips as well as roaring keep tracks of as loud as feasible"and located a small, secluded storage facility area in a commercial status forgeting Cork's docklands. The duality in their music, between the all natural and also the technical, can partially be traced back to this factor. "There was a bare comparison between the industrial, grey and worn out storage facilities and the lovely scenery out on Stopper port,"mentions Doubt. Ellll, Berlin-based techno sorcerer Ellen Master, claims the internet and nearby hubs may not have actually been actually the
only reasons why Cork became a reproduction ground for unique group music." Stopper has been actually an incredibly house-focused metropolitan area, and also although I have actually never associated with that, percussive music happening out of the city in the final couple of years seems like a reaction to that perspective." Facebook Twitter Pinterest From the 1st seconds you push use a Flooding singular, or even a hypnotic Ellll release, or even a stormlike rave loosie coming from Lighght, you listen to dispute and also tumult. Percussion-wise, they draw coming from sounds from around the world. Listen to the drums as well as you could think about Latin The United States or even Africa. Sometimes local area concepts sneak in: Numbertheory featured an example of sean nós, an Irish tradition of haunting, melismatic vocal; Syn's track Coy featured a sample of the bodhrán, an Irish drum helped make along with goatskin; Lighght's great 2019 cd, Gore-Tex in the Nightclub, Balenciaga Amongst the Bushes, makes usage of the harp. Irishness exists, regardless of whether it is actually simply snooping. Cork is known lovingly as"the rebel area", the outcome of its long record of fierce protection and also obstinate frustration, primarily against British guideline. A caricature of Cork people in Irish society-- perma-vexed and also dangerously parochial, made famous abroad through firebrand footballer Roy Keane as well as popular culture phenomena including the TELEVISION series Youthful Wrongdoers-- apparently contains some honest truth." It is actually a saying, yet the entire revolutionist aesthetic that Cork has actually taken on actually molds the urban area. You observe murals of Che Guevara, recommendations to the Palestinian trigger,"says O'Connell, whose pummelling drums are typically alonged with sludgy heavy-metal themes.
Most of these musicians do not pinpoint with Cork's medical self-mythologising. "I really did not take pleasure in a lot of my young people, and invested a bunch of my opportunity as a teen in local consuming spots," mentions Syn, 25, whose mom has operated as a club DJ. "I always remember begrudging Cork coming from a young age as a result of the shortage of tasks for young people in the area past acquiring fucked up."
& Facebook
Twitter Pinterest DIY rushing was the only method onward in a tourism-oriented nation where, every number of months, an accommodation seems to change a crucial night life hub. The eventual members of Flooding tossed much of their personal events since, as they see it, commercialised locations prioritise step and also double-vodka invoices over the physical adventure. Today, Syn helps run a queer night gotten in touch with CXNT in the Roundy, where throbbing, untrendy types like hardgroove, gabber and also donk masquerade the norm. As O'Connell places it: "The significant clubs merely would like to listen to EDM and mundane, Heineken-sponsored, white-bread, Fiat 500 techno."
Even with their very own inventiveness, as well as the support of Plugd and also various other places, such as Kino and the Community Hall, producers are actually required to look elsewhere for options. The sounds being actually developed in Cork have been actually championed by performers and DJs in the financing, at Dublin Digital Broadcast-- a haven for Ireland's weirdest audios, where McMorrow still holds a month to month program phoned Hush-- as well as fantastic collectives including Nightclub Convenience.
Lots of proficient manufacturers and creatives possess, a minimum of semi-permanently, gone overseas. Certified mathematician O'Connell left just recently for Beijing, while Master and also Superfïcie have actually both relocated to Berlin. As it happens, McMorrow is actually busy prepping themself for a transfer to Glasgow when we communicate, an usual journey for Irish creatives in the last few years. Rental fees are actually lesser there, ailments for nightlife lifestyle are less suffocating, and also youngsters are, in his scenery, managed a lot better in Scotland than in his house nation.
"Unless you're intending on expending over half your standard earnings every month, you most likely won't have the capacity to find a location to stay in Cork," he regrets. "I would certainly really love nothing at all more than to become able to keep in Stopper, as well as perform what I love here, yet straight today it's only certainly not feasible."
Financial barriers have not stopped the energy of these musicians, nevertheless. "Whether it's a storehouse gathering along with 30 intoxicated people crammed into a dark, drab room paying attention to industrial remixes of Princess Superstar, or checking out the Roundy acquire become a topless sweatbox," O'Mahony points out of his long-lasting minds of the community-based micro-scene, "it is actually the important things that were created for, and through, people like our company that stand apart."

Kelly Clarkson moves to daytime talk, and her 3-year-old wants in
CLOSE
Tumblr media
Kelly Clarkson, musician and the first American Idol, dishes on the inspiration behind her new talk show and growing up watching Oprah. Harrison Hill, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES – As a recent taping of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” begins, the three-time Grammy winner emerges from behind the bank of audience seats, performing Heart’s “Alone” while walking through rows of cheering fans.
Clarkson even stops to let one join in before making her way down to the center of the airy, comfy set, closing the tune with a trademark power riff. She then calls out to a woman in the audience wearing a “Meaning of Life” shirt, the title of her eighth studio album and most recent concert tour.
The interactive musical opening plays to the first “American Idol” winner’s strength, but she embraces it more for familiarity than as a branding maneuver.
“Honestly, the singing at the beginning of every show was more for me to be comfortable. I’ve done it for a decade on tour. And I’ve been covering songs forever. Obviously, I’m from “Idol” – Hi! Sang covers the whole time. It’s what got me here, so it’s what I’m going to be doing on the way out,” she says, laughing.

“Clarkson,” focused on “humor, heart and connection,” features a guest panel that mixes celebrities and regular people with uplifting stories.
A-list movie star Dwayne Johnson headlines Monday’s premiere, which also features an Oregon woman who runs a community food pantry. Other first-week guests include Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Garner, John Legend, Jay Leno and Chance the Rapper.
Clarkson approvingly cites the unpredictable guest matchups on “The Graham Norton Show” as inspiration: “He always sets you up with just the most random characters that you would never find in one place. I think that’s really clever, and it breaks down walls when (guests) are nervous.”
To the likely disappointment of some fans, Clarkson, who has sold more than 25 million albums and is known for such hits as “Miss Independent” and “Because of You,” won’t be opening each show with her own songs.

“I think it’d be a genuinely tool thing, me singing my own music. They’re all covers. … I like doing songs people love to sing to,” says the singer, whose show band is the same one she tours with. “At Christmastime, I might sing something from my Christmas record. Or if we’re releasing a new single, I might sing something as a surprise.”
Clarkson, 37, displays an engaging, natural enthusiasm that bubbles up in conversation, as with the interjected “Hi!” or when she briefly interrupts an on-set interview to quiet her crew – “Hey, guys, I love you, but this is on camera!” – and later calls out her husband and manager, Brandon Blackstock, for playing a video on his phone at the other end of the set.

The talk show allows room for Clarkson’s digressions and improvisations, even her glitches (“Oh, my gosh. I’m an idiot,” she says during the taping, after one inconsequential error). They convey a charm that has helped her connect with fans throughout her music career and, more recently, her time as a coach on NBC’s “The Voice,” to which she returns for Season 17 on Sept. 23.
Clarkson’s engaging “Voice” presence suggested her potential as the host of her own show, which is produced by NBC and will air on many of the network’s owned stations.

“I always say she’s one of us in a way that so many celebrities aren’t, because we chose her,” says executive producer Alex Duda, referring to Clarkson’s talent-show roots. “Even though she’s a big superstar, we all feel like she’s our best friend. That’s the best combination of qualities for a daytime host.  She’s like a jazz artist. She brings all the humor, all her personality and infuses it into the basic melody we give her.”
Approachability is key to the appeal of Clarkson, who recently relocated to Los Angeles from Tennessee with Blackstock and their children: River Rose, 5, and Remington, 3. (She’s also the stepmother of Blackstock’s children, Seth and Savannah.)
“My youngest daughter has already asked me if she can be on the show,” she says.

Clarkson, who worked as a cocktail waitress in her hometown of Burleson, Texas, before becoming at star at 20, had been singing since childhood and knew music, but daytime talk is a new and dramatic shift.
She felt some reassurance after twice hosting the Billboard Music Awards to positive reviews, which were only amplified after it was revealed that she worked the 2019 show suffering from appendicitis (She had an appendectomy the next day.).
Still, it took some persuading from Blackstock before she committed to daily show duty.
“I was very nervous about taking on something I hold a high bar to, all the (hosts) I love watching. I didn’t know how it would play out, and my husband convinced me. He said, ‘Look at all the stuff you love whenever you talk about Oprah, Ellen or Rosie O’Donnell back in the day, how they were able to do so many good things,’” she says. “There’s so much negativity, so much division (now). One of the main reasons I signed on is I wanted a place that was fun, joyful, had a lot of heart.”

Going in, she knew she had at least part of the gig down pat.
“I knew I could talk. I don’t get nervous with people ever. I’m quite the extrovert. That’s not a surprise, I imagine, for anyone. I really genuinely love people. I’m a full-on tourist in that sense,” she says. “I’m very down to earth, and I think everybody’s very similar. We all just come in different packages and we all love different things. I like getting in there and finding that connection.”

To provide more opportunities for the singer to interact with the audience, “Clarkson” includes familiar elements from her concerts.  Audience members suggest cover songs, explaining their personal significance, and Clarkson leads “Kelly-oke” group singing sessions. The set design, which features guitars on the walls and wooden supports that resemble musical staffs, includes seats just feet from Clarkson and her guests, because she likes the close contact.
And while music is a signature component,  the show will explore a broad range of topics, including family and motherhood.

“I love relating to other moms. It makes me feel good, because sometimes you feel like you’re epically failing and just treading water. And we’re all doing our best and trying our best,” she says.
Clarkson says she was nervous taping the pilot, but she’s already feeling more confident. And she’s not focused on the treacherous daytime landscape, which has in recent years claimed talk shows helmed by such high-profile names as Katie Couric, Harry Connick Jr., Meredith Vieira and Anderson Cooper.
“This is what’s weird about me. Ignorance is bliss. I’m just doing my thing. I love talking to people. I love singing. I love the audience being kind of a co-host with me. My band’s here,” she says. “So, I’m just kind of doing me. It might work and it might not.”

A bouquet for Bisi Fayemi
Tumblr media
By Rt Hon Hakeem Jamiu     Bisi Fayemi who turns 56 today is the wife of Ekiti State Governor and this is her second tenure as the first lady of Ekiti State but that is not all. She is such a rare breed that needs to be celebrated at every given opportunity. She is talented with brains and beauty. She is an internationally recognised gender specialist, policy, women and child rights advocate and an intellectual of note. She recently bagged the 2018 Zik Prize for Humanitarian Leadership alongside the former Ghanaian President, John Mahama, immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who won in the political leadership category.   Also the governors of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel and his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Sanni-Bello, emerged winners in the good governance award category. Before her recent Zik award, she was on April 5, 2011, presented with the David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of philanthropy but narrowly missed the African Leadership Hunger Prize Award in 2008 when she was nominated. With the Rockefeller Award, Mrs. Fayemi joined the rank of past winners such as former South African President, Nelson Mandela, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Sheela Pattel, Fazle Hasan and Queen Rania. In 2011, she was appointed as the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) by the Federal Government.   She was listed in March 2012 as one of the 100 personalities working for the advancement of women and girls in the world. Her contribution to important national discourse was very key such that former President Goodluck Jonathan noticed her absence during a discussion about HIV/AIDS in Abuja when the former President asked: “Where is the wife of Ekiti State Governor? I enjoyed her contribution the last time she was here.” Prof Utomi described her as ‘a reputable feminist activist, Gender Specialist, Social Entrepreneur, Policy Advocate and writer, who has devoted her time, talent and resources to the promotion and defence of rights of women and the girl child’.   She has been doing this before her husband became Governor in October 2010 through her organization, the African Women Development Fund (AWDF) through which she has empowered many women groups especially widows across Africa. I have known her since January 2007, though my association with her husband who is second term governor of Ekiti State and now Chairman, Nigeria Governors’Forum (NGF), dated back to 1984 when we were both students at the University of Lagos. I later served as Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation to him during his first tenure between October 2010 and October 2014. Since I have known Erelu Bisi Fayemi, she has remained her pleasant and humble self.   During her first tenure as wife of the Governor, she made her impact felt in that administration through many life-lifting programmes such as the Multiple Birth Trust Fund to cater for the needs of couples who gave birth to twins or more children at a go; sponsored the gender based violence law and the Child Right Act in Ekiti State, established the Ekiti Development Foundation, an organisation she used to empower many Ekiti women and women organisations. She collaborated well with the Ministry of Women Affairs and her positive impact was felt on Ekiti women and children.   She embarked on a programme called Erelu mbe Oja wo ( Erelu visits markets ) where she interacted with the market women, gave them measuring bowls and wallets, bought ingredients from them and supported them financially. She gave 16 buses to the market women leaders in each of the 16 Local Government Areas. She supported many indigent women and offset the medical bills of many patients. She is behind the food bank project and soup kitchen with a Non-Governmental Organisation whereby elderly and indigent Ekiti citizens were provided with foodstuffs, both raw and cooked.   She has a pure heart and she is a cheerful giver who is kind to a fault. Bisi Fayemi was a pillar of support for many in the government of Fayemi at that time. She is a problem solver and humility personified. Like many other stakeholders in the first Fayemi government, she was devastated by the electoral loss on June 21, 2014 but she took it with equanimity and handled the post-election trauma in a matured way such that she came out stronger and played a more active role in the re-election of her husband on July 14, 2018. As she would reveal later, she was devastated not by the loss per se, but because of treachery from those she trusted and assisted during that administration.   Many of them turned their backs against her, castigated her and her husband for the electoral loss even when they knew more serious reasons for the loss ! Narrating her experience to me one evening after we were out of government, she exclaimed with disappointment in her voice, how people you trusted most could suddenly turn against you because you are no longer in position of power where you can dispense patronage. I instantly remembered the words of Bertha M. Clay in his novel, “Beyond Pardon” when he wrote, “There are many sorrows; the bitterness of death; the tortures of jealousy; the anguish of long suffering; but there is nothing that rends the heart, that destroys all hopes, that ruins a life so quickly as treachery from the one we love best”. Even though she was disappointed about betrayal from unexpected quarters, there was no bitterness in her heart. Perhaps the greatest attribute of this woman of virtue is her forgiving spirit and her large heart. She embraced and forgave many of those who betrayed her in the first tenure and moved on. In fact, she influenced the present appointment of many of them in this present dispensation. She will always say in Yoruba, ‘e woo ta baa gbagbe oro ana, a o ni ‘reni ba sere mon (Look, if we don’t let by gone be byegone, we won’t have any friends left).   This special attribute shocked and drew many to her, who had thought she would adopt the an-eye-for-an-eye approach when against all odds, Fayemi won election for his second tenure and she also automatically commenced her second tenure as the first lady. During the electioneering campaign between May and July 2018, Bisi Fayemi led other women in an elaborate road show and visited almost all farmsteads in the state to campaign for her husband just as she did in 2014 when seeking re-election. She has intimidating credentials yet, she is as gentle as a dove and humility personified.   She had received standing ovation on the floor of the General Assembly (UNO) for her efforts through the AWDF to make life better for African women. She is until recently, a UN Women Nigeria Senior Advisor, and is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Africa Leadership Centre, King’s College, London. Bisi Fayemi is the author of Loud Whispers (2017), a masterpiece which I was privileged to review and recommend for all secondary schools, Speaking for Myself (2013), and an autobiography,Speaking above a Whisper (2013). She also co-edited Voice, Power and Soul. She is a motivational speaker who has delivered many public lectures including the recent convocation lecture of the University of Medical Sciences , Ondo. Bisi Fayemi holds many traditional titles like Erelu of Isan Kingdom, Iyalode of Ilemeso, Yeye Ajiseye of Awo-Ekiti and Ochiora of Umezi Owa, Enugu State.   As we celebrate this woman of substance, we in Ekiti are proud to call her our own and we thank God for sparing her life till this day. We wish her Happy Birthday and many more prosperous years of service to humanity. Rt Hon Hakeem Jamiu is the Deputy Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly. He wrote from Ado Ekiti.
