playing through danganronpa with my boyfriend is so nice :') I haven't really touched it since I was about 17, so looking at it now as a 23 year old... is weird! and nostalgic!! it feels like a really funked up reunion, but I missed these weird characters..!

As the only member of the team old enough to not need parental permission and could “afford” to do this, Steve was elected to escort Argyle back to California. He couldn’t afford the plane ticket back or the time off work but no one believed that. Their perceptions of Steve never seemed to change, no matter how much Steve’s life shifted. He’d been supporting himself for almost two years now but was still the “rich guy”. The job thing at least temporarily solved itself since no one was in town to rent videos. He should have been hunting for another job but there wasn’t much to pick from these days. Steve wanted to help, he really did. He always did and this was something he could accomplish so he figured he’d make it work. Originally, he’d planned to call his parents and say he’d gotten stuck and needed help getting home. They’d lecture him for the rest of his life and probably put him on a bus to teach him a lesson but there were worse things out there. Like pacing hospital hallways between rooms of friends who made no changes, desperate for something to pray to in the face of everything he knew roamed his world. It was that exact helpless feeling, that path worn in sterile hospital linoleum that Nancy used against him. How helpful it’d be for Steve to have a change of scenery and try to forget about all of this for a few days. A luxury they all needed and one he was fortunate enough to have. He’d be foolish not to take it.

He had tried to ‘heal’ River, despite there being nothing that could be healed and he had exhausted himself to the very brink. He was so cold, felt so faint, like he had given his all to River. And River did feel oddly reinvigorated, despite the pain, he felt better than ever, clearer, stronger and more focused. The exertion, the feeling of drowning, the coughing, it was gone. But this was wrong. He didn’t want to feel good like this.

Putting on a pair of boxers, River grabbed the blanket and yanked it off the bed, he quickly wrapped the nude motionless body of Lucas. Lucas felt faint, and drifting, and there was only one person he knew for sure could help them. Trying to keep the young man warm, he quickly messaged Vy.

Vy was awakened by his emergency phone ringing with a message, seeing River’s number there with an SOS. Vy looked at the sleeping form of Hayden sleeping by his side and quickly jumped off the bed, managing to wake his husband. He put on a robe and quickly made it to the door, explaining to Hayden the message he got from River. Hayden looked surprised at Vy at what he told him, dragging himself out of bed as well. From what Vy told him, they might need some extra help and especially contact the people they worked with.

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).

given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)

but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:
